Oh he is a great prof with the best job. Getting paid to sit in the back of the room while he has the Dean's of every department of engineering come in and give speech's and pitch their discipline. What i life.
He is an awosome teacher.
he fails like 30% of the reverse engineering project...power trip, plus this class is completely useless, it shouldn't be a requirement
Great professor overall. My one warning is to choose the REP and NOT the energy project, if it is offered again. I had a group of 7 working on that project and it was very difficult because we did not know what he expected. Other than that, he lets you miss 7 classes, which is like 1/4 of the total number.
A good, fun guy who will relate what he knows to you and try his best to help you out. ENGR 100 (now 1000) was really easy ? he allowed you to miss up to 6 classes, and I constantly had to fight for my attendance, but other than that, only two projects were required, and all you had to do was get a passing grade on both to pass the class (P/F).
He was alright
makes the class easy but hes terrible
Kevin is, by far, one of the most caring and attentive teachers of my life. And he has the best stories!
One of my favorite professors; he has the most interesting stories to tell and pertinent advise to share. He really cares about his students and is always willing to help if asked. Take his class seriously and you will do well academically and professionally.
He cares about the students alot, although he tries to play himself off as the hard-ass teacher, but hes pretty relaxed. The material he has to give is really boring tho, don't worry about this class at all, its just pass fail and will be your easiest class of the first semester of engineering.
He's a strict guy. I've heard he's nicer than he seems in class, but I've never really talked to him before, so I can't really attest to that. It's kind of worthless to rate him because it's not like you can pick another class instead. If you want to be an engineer from Uconn, you have to take this class with this guy. Read HF&C!!!
Prefers a more respectful approach. Tries to bring in a variety of speakers. Very nice in smaller groups, but won't put up with any nonsense. Tries to grade fairly. Sometimes hard to interpret what he wants. Pay attention to any examples, and check Husky CT often. TAKE NOTES ON THE READING BOOK!!!
Does not like freshman. I hear he is actually a decent guy if you get to know him, but he is a total jerk in our large class. He doesn't like "stupid freshman questions" (He actually said this), I don't know why he is teaching a freshman class.
Like the other people mention he HATES stupid questions so try and research and look on HuskyCT before asking him. otherwise he appreciates interest and is very helpful with questions that arent so simple. also be respectful and he will respect you back
Nice guy. Easy class (pass/fail). He doesn't even talk in the class. Its just a guest lecturer every week. Go to class and do the two projects and you pass.
He was strict during class but he is a nice guy once you get to know him. The class was easy as long as you completed the projects.
Do yourself a favor and try not to have mclaughlin. McLaughlin (put into a few words) is just that, something to laugh at. His work is mostly completed by Student workers. When you talk to him he only talks about himself and how great he is based on the accomplishments of his past students. He has no knowledge of the real world to give you. AVOID
Easy Pass/Fail class. Don't listen to the comments below. His personality doesn't matter if you're taking ENGR1000. Do the projects, go to most of the classes and you will be in good shape. He is a bit strict to a big freshmen class, but that doesn't affect your grade.
He's always around, but doesn't do much... Pretty much just lets others do the work for him. But VERY lenient and helpful. Cares about students needs if they ask for help. Easy to pass with little effort.
I really just don't like this man. I didn't go to the class often, because it was worth 1 credit pass fail. He didn't tell me what I needed to do on the projects and he basically just love like 5 of the students and hated the rest. Weird times.
Don't skip more than 5 classes and do the projects and you pass. You don't need to pay attention just be there.
Kevin is a phenomenal professor. Says like 3 words a lecture and lets the presenters do all of the work for him. That man is living the life. Love him
Honestly, no one wants to be taking the class in the first place, so he has to deal with awful freshman. The reverse engineering project wasn't too bad, but the catapult was hard. He was super nice and helpful when I went to him and he seems like an awesome guy! He also runs the SWE chapter at UCONN. He's a pretty good professor.
It is a pass or fail class and is very easy to pass. Kevin doesn't teach at all he just introduces presenters all the time. Easy class there are only 4 requirements to pass the class. You need to reverse engineer something, build a catapult, miss less than five classes, and the final is two letters to people who inspired you to be engineers.
Three words to describe him: respect, respect, respect. Kevin has no material to teach - the presentations take up all the classes. Attend the lectures with your clicker for the question of the day, or else you will have an incomplete... Really easygoing guy, you know he loves his job and knows his stuff!
Easiest class ever. If you can't pass it, then you shouldn't be a college student.
Kevin doesn't teach; he has people present for him. You learn nothing in class and are graded on attendance to a pointless class.
Understand that Kevin does not teach. Instead your have different presenters (ranging from good to unbearable) come in to talk to the class about the various kinds of engineering. It's not a class many look forward to, but for whatever reason it's a requirement for engineering majors. Luckily it's an easy class. Just show up and do the projects.
Easiest class ever, just show up and do the projects which you get plenty of time for. You can tell he's genuinely interested in all the presentations that you have to sit through and he's a cool guy.
McLaughlin is a super nice guy. ENGR 1000 is a ridiculously easy class with 2 projects and a final that consists of writing 2 thank you notes. When I had trouble with the projectile project he helped me the morning it was due and has be so nice. He's a great person to have on your side as well if you're a mechanical engineering major.
Doesn't have a problem unless you don't make the effort to pay attention or attend class. Projects are easy as long as you do them and actually put in effort. Super easygoing. Everything he does is for the students.
Kevin's probably a good guy, but he treated our class like a bunch of immature high school students. Doesn't really matter though because the lectures are just filled with presentations by other people. Really, really easy class. The projects are a pain, but you basically just have to do them to pass. Not fun but it'll be over quick.
Inspirational professor who always tries to influence students to the engineering. He knows his stuff so if you ever have a question about anything just go to his office hours. Do the two project, final thank you letters, and do not miss more than 5 lectures in order to pass the course. Very clear on what is due just look at the website.
The class overall is easy, all you have to do is show up for most classes. He allows you to skip 5 classes during the semester. Mostly guest speaker during class periods. You have two group projects also
Kevin truly seems like a great guy. The class is mostly guest lectures, but if you needed to go for him for something, I'm sure he would be willing to help you. Two projects: reverse engineering a device and building a catapult. Do the projects no matter how bad they are, show up, and do the final, and the class is cake.
Pass/Fail, University wouldn't let him convert it to a grading scale. If you miss 5 classes, you fail. Takes attendance with a clicker q at the end. Reverse engineering project (REP) and catapult: just do it. The lecturers he brings in are inspirational. I looked forward to going, it was a stress RELIEVER. Join one of his clubs, cool dude honestly.
"I'm so great - y'all are dumb freshman." - Him and every guest speaker he has come in. Boring in general, waste of time. Group projects are hard.
The class is Pass/Fail, and you're graded on three things: participation (clicker), an REP project, and a catapult project. Don't skip more than 5 classes and do both projects. Guest speakers can be enjoyable, but they can also be dry. McLaughlin is very well-respected, and he loves to talk about global warming/climate chance/pollution
ENGR1000 is honestly the biggest waste of my time in college. Kevin definitely a big reason why. He's a nice guy, but he and the content are maliciously boring.
The ENGR 1000 class for freshman was an annoying class because the lectures were pretty boring and we never really learned anything. If I didn't have friends in the class I wouldn't have gone, even though it was mandatory. There were group projects that were easy to pass if you're not lazy or dumb, and out of boring out of class presentations
This guy thinks he's the man because he teaches an entry level freshman engineering class that has nothing to do with engineering. His directions are ambiguous and then he fails people and criticizes his freshman students on a power trip. The man tries to be inspirational but is only condescending.
Kevin's a nice guy, cares a lot about the environment. 1st year this class is graded. Pretty boring class, but only 2 projects. You have to show up to class for attendance (clickers) but you have 5 free skips, so it's pretty fair. Out of class presentations were interesting if you picked the right ones. Honestly if you just try you'll do well.
ENGR 1000 is a complete waste of time. Kevin is the most condescending, self-absorbed teacher I have ever experienced. The guest presenters are terrible, and you have to sit through them to receive a participation point. The group projects will waste time that you could be spending on classes that are actually helpful.
Kevin is a decent guy the class is just kind of pointless. You're allowed to miss five lectures and still get full attendance credit so plan those out wisely. Just show up to class and don't fall asleep and it won't matter. You just listen to guest lecturers, some more interesting than others. The group projects were easy, no sweat.
The professor and the guest speakers waste lecture time by giving boring and essentially useless presentations that are drawn out to fill class time. The group projects have extremely subjective criteria that make it hard to pass. Kevin is not an effective teacher nor does he actually grade any of the projects. It makes me wonder why he has a job.
Outside of class, Kevin can be a really nice guy. I can't say he has much impact on ENGR 1000 however. The class is comprised around guest lectures (some better than others) and projects, and a good chunk of your grade is based on just showing up. The projects are fine as long as you put effort in. You'd have to really try to fail this course.
He thinks this useless class is the most important thing in the world. The whole grade is determined by 2 projects that are graded way too tough, and the rubrics are completely subjective. ENGR1000 is not mandatory, just drop it while you still can.
Kevin gets a lot of hate, and it's not really warranted. Sure, the lectures are boring, but he isn't the one giving them. He gives four free class skips if you don't want to show up, so don't then. The REP was an easy A if you just put effort into it, and the horrible catapult project only takes up 20%, the same amount as the take home final.
Kevin is a good professor that gives great advice, explaining how only the mentally tough and mature will succeed in engineering. The class itself is boring but the projects outside of class are fun and I did both of them the night before the due date. There is no final, just write two letters to people who inspired you.
kjm is so condescending and whole class is graded by projects which are graded so strictly and can be luck based. sucks to be a frosh engineer at Uconn
Kevin was very discouraging and barely taught me anything. This class is set to encourage people to continue in the engineering, but it did the opposite. This one credit class was pass or fail, but this year we recieved letter grades, and the TAs weren't clear on grading rubrics, they graded how they felt. So goodluck.
Kevin is not the most relaxed or most engaging professor, but he has to deal with literally half of all the freshman engineering students at the same time, for 4 times a week. He is very strict, and makes sure everyone comes to class. He cares about students, but ENGR1000 is inherently very useless and stupid class, that isn't helping anyone.
Very condescending, thinks that because he knows a lot more about ENGR than his students that he needs to show it. Projects are easy, lab time to work on them is very crowded and TA's aren't helpful. This class is OPTIONAL, which advisors don't want you to know, so don't take this class. Didn't learn anything and it was a waste of my time.
Highly respected professor in the engineering school, very wise, and has a passion for getting his students where they need to be in the engineering world.
Didn't have a ton of lectures, but when he did they were a bit slow. Definitely a nice guy. Material is pretty easy and also easy to get a good grade.
took it fall 2019, you needed to go to answer iclicker questions (not correctly), but some people would give their clickers to friends who would do their attendance for them. only 4 assignments (2 are with a group): reverse engineer something, make a catapult/trebuchet and write 2 letters to people. pick good group members for the projects
Disrespectful, unnecessarily rude, and can sometimes come off as with a god complex in worst cases. Wouldn't recommend unless you need to take the class. Short warnings for upcoming assignments. Only Lectures.
Unsure if Kevin has a greater purpose in the department, but from what I've seen he just likes to ramble on about the good old days and go on nonsense tangents until his assistant professor takes the microphone and corrects him or makes clear what he just said. Unannounced HW. He gave us a whole 24 hours to find groups for the Catapult project
kevin comes off as rude and self centered, but he doesn't really teach the class, instead guest presenters come in. an easy class, there's only two group projects and a take home final, and clicker questions. at the end there's also 3 out of class presentations. just show up for class and sit through the lectures, do the work, and you'll be fine.
This class is nice during the times when you don't have projects but then gets super intense very quickly. Feels like a lot more work than a 1 credit class. Two projects make up a large portion of your grade but can feel rushed.
Mandatory lectures with iClicker participation Q's. Lots of guest speakers, some you might not find as relevant. Two group projects: reverse engineering and catapult/trebuchet plus final take home: 2 letters of appreciation. Projects were high stress and competitive. Find a good group at the beginning or else these projects will become difficult!!
ENGR1000 was kind of a pointless class. You do the REP and the catapult project, which are worth half your grade. I don't think this class prepares you for engineering very much, and Kevin does not really teach. Guest speakers come in every week and speak so him and Stephany kind of do nothing. Just show up to class and do the iclicker questions.
Class was easy, just show up to do clicker questions. But the projects make you wonder how theyre getting away with only being a one credit course. The REP and cat/tre project are half your grade and while they arent difficult, a lot of hours were spent outside of class preparing.
One of the biggest issues I have is the amount of time given to us to complete the projects. The REP was way too long just to take something apart and write about it. The Catapult project, however, felt very rushed. It definitely required more time and focus and my group ended up not doing well because of the time constraint with other obligations.
The grade is essentially based on two assignments with open ended prompts. Be prepared to spend more time on projects during project periods. When not doing a project though, the class is not demanding at all and we get to listen to lectures from various engineering departments.
Had to show up to lectures for clicker questions, they were very boring. Nearly all of the grade is based on 2 projects that are *not* worth the 1 credit for the amount of effort he expects you to put in.
The course is a mandatory introductory course to engineering but not really useful to a student who knows what carrier they want. There's group projects which are weird and your grade is dependent on if you're paying attention to the lectures and can remember one specific detail from them to answer an iClicker question at the end of the class.
Kevin doesn't really do much it's just other professors coming in to lecture but honestly you don't really need to go, just pull up iclicker on ur phone and answer the questions everyday and youll get an A. The whole grade is based off 2 group projects so just be very careful when you pick your groups and ur set.
Way too much work is expected for a one credit class. The entire grade is basically based off two big projects and that you show up to his lectures. He brings in other professors and have them do his lectures for him. The only upside to this class is that you can watch the lectures online and answer participation questions from home.
The worst course I have ever taken. The professor was kind, but the way they graded was so bad. It is based on their own opinion. They give the points depend on what they want, instead of on the effort you put in.
He is kind of annoying but a decent dude. As long as you do the iclicker and do good on the two projects, you're fine. He doesn't really teach and the projects are annoying and useless but easy to get good grades in. Just make sure you have good partners or can do a lot of work (I did the first project alone in two days, but I still got an A).
Very easy class and was at times quite useful. Mandatory participation and the projects were a pain but if you participate you will get an A.
You do two group projects; lord help your class grade if you fail even one of them. He gives you way too much time on one project and way too little on the other. Also, both of these projects are graded purely on their opinion. Also, iclicker bad. If you know what you want from your degree, you will gain little, if anything, from this class.
I was required to take ENGR 1000 and thought it would be a good class, but it's not... a class? All you do is sit and watch professors from all the departments give presentations and have to use iClicker to prove you were present. The two group projects are time-consuming but not that hard, just make sure you have good partners.
The lectures themselves are more or less useless, Kevin hardly does anything himself. Lecturers from the engineering department are brought in to talk about their respective subjects. The two projects are difficult if not managed correctly or if you have a bad group. Not a hard class, but certainly one of the most annoying one-credit courses.
An extremely useless class. Kevin does no actual work himself, the TA's do everything. Your overall grade consists of 2 projects, both of which are way too involved for a ONE credit course. Mandatory attendance. He acted like we knew engineering concepts, but he never taught anything useful. Acted like he was above us.
Kevin doesnt teach. Grading takes forever because its all done be the TAs. Lectures almost always go over (you cant leave even if you need to for another class bc attendance is done at the end). And overall, guidelines for projects can be confusing. Tbf, I did appreciate how Kevin would emphasize deadlines/upcoming work.
Class itself is pointless, I learned absolutely nothing about Engineering topics.TAs do most of the grading, so it takes a while to receive feedback and grades. Lectures were mandatory and paired with Iclicker, which became more of a chore than actually learning something. Projects were decently interesting, but LOTS of work for a 1 credit class.
This class was annoying. The professor only brought in other professors to lecture for him. I didn't learn anything about engineering. The class is graded based on 2 major group projects so pick your group well. There is a final writing project instead of an exam. Attendance at lectures is graded using iClicker.
This was a very easy class, but I would never take a class with Kevin again. He does not treat his students with respect and talks down on them. In the several interactions I had with them, I was met with unnecessary rudeness and disrespect.
Always had other professors lecturing, class didn't actually matter as long as you got the clicker questions at the end of class for participation points (you don't even have get it right). I rarely actually went, just played the livestream to get the clicker question. Project heavy, way too much work for 1 credit (120 slides for the 1st project).
He could have made an engr orientation class easy, informative, and enjoyable, but he went ahead and made it as painful and annoying as possible. I have no doubt that he cares for his students, but for all that 1 credit ??? Advising lies to you that you have to take the class, drop it and fill the requirement with literally anything else.
Kevin is a great lecturer.
This was not a 1-credit class difficulty. A lot harder. But he's a nice guy for sure.
