Peice of Cake. An Easy A. Take for Foriegn Lang. youll pass.
He is such a great guy.He explains everything very well. he understands we are all just learning so he goes very slow. almost to slow. but it is good.it is an esay "A".
Kevin is so funny & really cares. He goes slow for us and is easy to understand. I don't think it's an easy A though because just cause he makes it easier & the tests he is helpful on doesn't mean u dont have to learn. It's still up to u to understand ASL
Listen up, it is easy to get an A, but you have to do the work to get it. There is no way around it. His fun style of teaching makes this an easy learning environment. I learned a lot.
rules simply rules

I think he is a fabulous teacher. He is so very patient and really cares about his students. It is interesting to learn about deaf culture and Mclellan provides a great learning environment. Definitely a class worth taking, even for fun
As long as you listen (NEVER fall asleep or talk) and pay attention this is an easy A. I admit, don’t get on his bad side . . . but he teaches the material very well.
This class is so easy. Yet, Kevin is either in a great mood or rotten mood. As long as you pay attention, you'll do great. No HW assigned, 3-4 EASY vocab tests, 3-5 min presentation for final. Seems a little bitter about being deaf, gets really defensive when talking about culture. Oh well...EASY A.
Nice guy but pick favorites. If he doesn't like you mine as well drop the class. Do all the work and you will pass his class. He is touchy about this culture so don't ask to many questions. Moody at times but tries to be funny too.
Interesting that many of the previous negative comments are made by students who can't spell... I like his style. Very emphatic. His signing while lecturing gives a terrific visual of language development! Great teaching role model.
He is very moody sometimes but can be funny too. I was a little dissapointed that I got a B in his class. If you know all of the vocab, but can't translate sentences quickly...then good luck. Also, if he doesn't like you...he will go off on you in front of everyone when you piss him off. He enjoys nice people but, don't suck up...it won't work.
All I have to say is....he turned out to be a way cooler guy than I thought. He suprized me at the end of the semester and really helped me out. Despite his bad moods...which everyone has on some days...he's a good person.
good guy dont piss him off he's deaf not stupid.4 tests vocab and sentence translations thats were you will lose the most points. his final is a 3-5 minute presentation a bit unfair for asl 100. all in all not a bad class i would take him again
I will agree, he it moody! But I think it's because some students try to take advantage of his disability. He is sharper than that! Nice guy and helpful though. Just do your work and show up. DO NOT USE A CELL PHONE DURING CLASS! DU... and you will get a good grade!
He is a great teacher. He tells funny stories. He will go off on you if you mess with him or do something stupid. The only problem I have with him is that he will not teach asl 205. His tests are easy, if you are there. Show up to class, just do not talk while he is teaching. It is very rude to talk while a deaf professor is trying to teach.
Very interesting. Very nice.
Definitely take him if ur interested in sign language. he is an amazing teacher! he is clear and easy to understand. in asl 100 there are 4 vocab based tests and a 3-5 min presentation for the final. pretty darn easy. easy A. trust me. super helpful. u can approach him and ask him any questions. very passionate too u cant tell he loves to teach.
His ASL 2 class is great. Easy tests, very little homework. Makes the class interesting. He can blow up at the class when he's having a bad day, but after that he's just fine. Definetly worth taking again. Too bad he doesn't teach ASL 3 or I would take him again.
This is the best teacher I've ever had. Its funny when he goes off on stupid slacker students. The dude is too much! He is also very knowledgeable about what he teaches and has a way of communicating that in an interesting and passionate style. Even though some paint him as a hothead -he was very encouraging to me and I very much appreciated it.
His class is a lot of fun. He is very nice and is a good teacher. He takes his time in class and helps you when needed. He will make u laugh every class. He has almost no hw, and test are fair.
Great teacher...always lets you out early. I love sign language after taking this class. Since he is deaf, it makes you see what the deaf community is like. Very nice and funny guy. Fair grader. Three tests plus 5 min final presentation. I wish he taught 3rd level sign language
If you want a teacher who will broaden your horizons, he is the one. I have never been so inspired by a teacher in a really long time. He made class worth going to. He was very clear on his topics and gave great examples.
He's fricking awesome...he can be a bit of a hothead about certain things but I learned so much about the culture and what is appropriate. His class made me want to become an interpreter. A warning to those who think the class is a joke...he is very serious about learning the language don't mess with him!
HE'S THE BEST PROF AT PALOMAR. HANDS DOWN. Nothing more need be said.
Great teacher- really gives you a good understanding of the culture. He's very upfront and will tell you if your question is considered insulting in the deaf society, which comes in handy. Very easy going- great sense of humor.
one of the best professors at palomar. he's fascinating, funny, and very helpful. thanks for a great class!!!
super easy class and was ALOT of fun! it was my favorite class by far! but dont expect him to get back to in an email very fast!
The Best Proffesor & Class I have taken @ Palomar. (Hot Teacher MY):0)
kevin mcclellan is wonderful. you will learn SO much in his classes. one of the best palomar has to offer. respect him and he'll respect you. :o) thank you kevin!!!
Kevin is a great professor. I had him for Deaf Culture. He is personable, approachable, sincere, and straight-forward. Ask him anything. He can also be quite funny. Just remember: if you ask him a question but you don't know Sign Language, LOOK at him: he needs to read your lips. So many students forget this. Otherwise, he's AMAZING.
Easily my favorite teacher this year. The subject matter would likely be dull as spanish without his enthusiasm. Ask him any question about any sign related or not, as long as its appropriate he gets excited that you're trying to extend yourself. Tests are easy if you study, just 3 tests and a final. Try to get him if you can. He's amazing.
I have never experienced such a teacher who strives to help every single student get an A in class. I taught at UCSD back in the 80's and I am extremely impressed with this individual's character/integrity. His life is the success of his students. Clarity on what to study for midterm/final it the best I had ever experience in my years of school.
Kevin is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet in your life. He is Deaf, but he talks so clearly you can hardly tell and lip reads very well. and you don't need to know ASL to take the class. He is so helpful and understanding. He has a great sense of humor. TAKE HIS CLASS you won't be disappointed.
He is an amazing teacher. He is one of the only teachers who allows you to speak in class. I think that value makes people want to be in his class. He is very helpful if ask him questions. He sometimes answers with a smart ass remark but your question still gets answered.
the best teacher ever. really he makes ASL so easy and fun. i recommend him to anyone that desires to learn sign language really you wont regret taking him.
At first I took ASL thinking it'd be an easy A, but I soon realized this: if you take his class, you need to respect his language/culture by taking it seriously. It bothered me that the people complaining about him were the same ones blatantly ignoring him. Kevin is SO patient, interesting, and funny! He has such an interest in sharing his culture.
Great teacher! He makes you want to learn about the language and culture. Not an easy A but if you go to class and pay attention you will do great on tests and become very comfortable with signing. Plus he is an amazing person with wonderful personality.
Great teacher and an easy A class. He does like when people show respect for the deaf culture..but overall great class and highly recommended! You do mini presentations in class but do get to interact with classmates.
I had no interest in sign language before taking this class, and now i love it! It's pure memorization and he helps makes class go by with funny stories and explanations. Great teacher and very easy to pass the class if you attend
Requires participation, which is great because it helps you learn. His approach is fun and interesting. I have much respect for him and the Deaf culture as a result of this class. He is intelligent and patient. I wish all professors were this good!
He's a really sweet man with a great sense of humor. He teaches really well and keeps you entertained throughout the class period. There's not a whole lot of homework just to know your signs but that usually comes pretty natural. I highly suggest taking him! He's great!
He helps you with any question you have. No homework other than practice. The best teacher to take ASL 1 with
Super cool teacher, very laid back. Loves to teach and makes jokes during lectures. Very helpful. Great teacher! Always had a good time in his class
He is a great teacher! He is funny and will make jokes, but about halfway through the semester he started to get mean right before the test and after that for a few classes then was back to normal. This was mainly due because of people being late or absent, which is understand able he just needs a better way of saying it. But he is a great teacher!
I absolutely loved professor Mclellan. An absolute joy to attend class. He's very funny, and really makes class fun. He allows you to take a pre-test before every single test so that you know where to study. Final is a 3-5 min presentation signing about any topic you choose. A+ for this professor!
Such a great teacher. I had him for ASL 1 and Deaf Culture Awareness and I loved it. I learned sooo much about the Deaf Culture and he made it interesting. He is a great teacher and is funny!
Mr. McLellan is an aweome teacher! He's an awesome guy too, so it's easy to approach him and ask for help. He'll do anything to help his students. If you put in some effort and he knows it, you have an big chance of getting an A. The final is fun too! It may sound a bit intimidating but everyone goes out of it satisfied :) Awesome teacher.
Professor McLellan is an asset to Palomar, and without a doubt, one of the most amazing people I have met. From day one, his students are immersed in a culture that remains foreign to most. He teaches his students that deafness isn't some kind of "social disorder." His ability to lip read and fluently converse is the mark of a truly gifted person.
Such an amazing man. I walked out of ASL 100 with a smile and a deep love and appreciation for the art of signing and the DEAF culture. He teaches with so much love and enthusiasm and if you stay on top of homework and study, passing is a cinch. I would recommend him to anyone. I miss that class!!
Kevin is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He doesn't really even sign ALL the time. He's pretty vocal for a deaf man. I took his ASL2 class over the summer, and while fast, he was very helpful when asked. Clarified things well and taught culture and fingerspelling as well. Super nice guy with lots to teach!
I had an amazing experience in this class. I would recommend him to those who have learning disabilities. Very supportive, understanding and helpful. Just make sure u practice.
Wonderful teacher! He has a passion for what he teaches and it's important to him that you learn as much as you can so he's very helpful. Keep him for all your ASL classes if possible.
Kevin is a great professor if you intend on coming to class. He is a no nonsense kinda guy, so don't think you can slide through his class. He is very helpful. I highly recommend him. If I were to say something I didn't like, it would be that b'cz of his past, I think he prejudges all hearing people into one category. He's very passionate re: ASL
Had him for ASL 1 and 2 (easy As). ASL 3 not so much. His test were very difficult and with an accelerated 8 week class, not enough time. He is still moody but can have good days. He expects much more than usual (when comparing him to ASL 1 and 2). I would not recommend taking a 8-week course for ASL 3.
I took the 8 wk 205. If you do the work, attend class and pay attention you can earn an A. He is a very nice man and a fair teacher. He really seems to want his students to do well and have a positive experience when learning ASL. Learning a new language isn't (& shouldn't be) an easy "A" Prof McLellan makes something that isn't easy - fun!
Overall, Kevin is a very good professor. Obviously intelligent, pretty funny, and often sarcastic. Don't take his sarcasm or any irritation at you personal; he gets over it quickly and is naturally blunt. Lenient on word definitions. Fair in-class usage of textbook. I easily passed, but I practiced and went to the ASL lab. I would take him again.
I really enjoyed the way he taught class. I loved going to class and learning from him. Yes, he can be a bit grumpy sometimes, but mostly he is in a great mood. His tests are not hard, as long as you are coming to class and learning all your signs. He is by far the funniest Professor I have ever had.
I love this professor! I took him for ASL 1 and 3. Yes, he uses his voice in class, but don't think that means you can. Especially if you want to get the grade. You need to put in the work it takes to earn the "A" grade. He's not just going to give it to you. He's very funny! I really enjoyed his stories too. You get a little peek inside his world
Kevin is a great teacher. Hilarious is an understatement. He explains things well. He makes class interesting. I actually enjoyed going to class. He's very passionate and very knowledgeable. I wish I could take him for every class. Your book is an absolute necessity. Showing up impertinent. He gives pre-tests which are very helpful.
Best ASL teacher! Easy grader, funny, helps out when you have a question. Very easy going class. I'd definitely take his class again.
Specifically waiting to take him again. Awesome teacher Super funny, laid back. 3 major tests and some presentations throughout the semester. Repeats things when you need it. Helps you out. You do NEED the textbook and to come to class. He doesn't want you to fail, or to have to drop fail you, just show up and participate, study a little youll pass
Very great teacher, you can tell he loves what he does. he is so passionate about you passing and tests were very easy, he gives practices tests that are just like the tests. Very Very good. Waiting to take ASL 101 with him.
Best language teacher ever, if you want/need to take a foreign language then take Kevin! He's not "mean", he just takes his culture seriously. His teaching methods (practice tests and going thru every sign in the book) make learning and retaining the signs like second nature. He has an awesome sense of humor and I'm on my 3rd class with him.
He wants you to read a chapter in the book every week. Every 5 weeks or around there will be a quiz and he always review with you. I would not miss the days he review for quizes, midterm and final. Super easy going teacher and you will have fun in his class. He did use interpreters .
Kevin is an easy A. just show up and participate, and if you are interested and want to learn ASL and actually show it then you will get a good grade. Usual do the work and study before the tests and you got it all covered!
Kevin is amazing, sweet and crazy funny. he was one of my favorite teachers and is very passionate but I would not take is class again only because I am in ASL3 now and after taking Kevin for ASL1 and ASL2 I am completely underprepared. but if you just need two semesters for a humanities or language requirement you couldn't pick a better guy.
Such a great teacher. He is HILARIOUS in class and is not hard on his tests. As long as you show up and practice your signs, you will pass.
Kevin is the BEST! He will help you pass the class so easily, ask him anything and he will help you! Very few test about four. Kevin made it easy to pick it ASL. Highly recommend him!
Kevin will always help you if you ask for it. He gives pretests the class before the test which is the exact same as the actual test. Rarely have homework. He is HILARIOUS , i absolutely love him. Participate in class and its an easy A. 100% recommend him!!!
He is actually deaf so he teaches it from a standpoint that helps you understand the language as well as the deaf culture. He is an amazing instructor and he is passionate about your understanding. He makes himself available to all of his students and he prepares you for every test by giving practice test. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
He's funny, and makes class fun. Few signing presentations nothing difficult, the tests are easy to pass if you review the signs after every lecture.
Fantastic teacher, funny, personable but most importantly teaches the importance of deaf culture and some of their ethics. It makes us hearing people think about things we wouldn't typically consider. I already had knowledge of some deaf culture, but he was able to shed light on the things I didn't know. He's definitely worth taking!
Probably the best professor I've ever had. He's funny, easy to learn from, and the class is actually enjoyable. I got really sick in the middle of the semester and missed a ton of class and still managed a B, but if you show up and study a decent amount you can definitely get an A. Wish I could take him next semester.
This teacher is amazing!!! I wish he thought all the asl classes!! I would take them all with him. He is deaf and talks a lot about the culture. You have 4 vocabulary tests and two short presentations. He goes through every sign and gives you others that aren't in the book. He makes class fun with all his jokes. I recommend!
The best ASL teacher! Kevin is deaf but he is so patient and is willing to help out every student! He is hilarious with his jokes. He makes learning a language so easy! I would recommend him without a doubt! His test are not that hard and only a couple presentations. He is highly respected, take his class and you will see for yourself! Amazing!
I absolutely loved this class! I was hesitant to have to learn a language over the summer thinking it would be a lot of work in a short amount of time but this professor is amazing. He is super patient and makes learning sign language so easy. He makes you feel as comfortable as you can with his stress free approach in teaching. Best teacher ever!
Kevin is one of the most amazing professors I've ever had. He is completely deaf, yet can read lips at an extraordinary rate. He is always willing to help and teach. He made me love ASL that much more, would absolutely take again! I highly recommend taking him
kevin was a GREAT professor!! he's so funny and makes class enjoyable. he made asl a comfortable language to learn. he gave super good feedback and was a patient guy. i would forsure take his class again.
Kevin is a great professor. He tried to make the class as fun as possible. He is a patient man who will always try his best to help every student. Test are not hard if you review the signs. Overall he is a great professor and I would definitely recommend taking his class
I absolutely loved this class! He made sign language fun and gives good feedback. I am a high school student and he wouldn't sign any papers until the first day but after that he was pretty cool about me taking his class. When I first met him, I thought he was a little rude, but I realized that's just his personality, so don't take it personally.
LOVED having Kevin as my ASL100 teacher. I took him for Deaf Culture as well and through both classes, learned a TON and respected him even more for his teaching style. You will have to study at home and make sure you know the signs during class and he doesn't mind pointing out the students that don't show up. Overall, loved him and the class!
He takes his time explaining how Deaf culture works. He corrects and grades appropriately and is funny. My favorite asl teacher at Palomar!
Prof. McLellan is deaf himself, however he communicates well through lip reading. He has a great amount of knowledge about the deaf community that he likes to share with others. This professor makes class fun, however he does sometimes have outbursts over random things. He got very upset over a student's final exam that overlapped his class.
Kevin is a fantastic teacher with very clear expectations. He wants everybody to pass, so he tells you exactly what to study for the class previous to book quizzes and exams. Don't be afraid to participate and ask questions!
Professor McLellen was great. He does a great job of explaining the culture, it is not just learning a new language. It is a class that you need to show up to. IF you miss class than it might be hard to learn the signs. Show up, do the assignments and you an get an A. I failed Spanish but got an A in ASL.
Best damn teacher I've ever had! He cares about each student and wants them to succeed! He has a lot of knowledge and shares that with his students. He needs to teach every level of ASL because he is that good and that well respected. I had him for ASL and Deaf Culture. I would happily repeat those classes again. I learned so much from him!
I wish I could take ASL205 with McLellan! I took ASL100 in the spring and ASL101 this summer and it couldn't have been better. He cares about students learning the language, even if that means repeating explanations. Three exams per course, plus a final presentation. I'm honestly sad that my classes over. If you can, TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!
Best ALS teacher. He doesn't play favorites As my level 2 teacher does. He makes sure you understand and teaches a lot about the deaf culture. I wish I could take him again. His quizzes are not easy but if you go to class and practice you will pass.
Kevin is the best and has great teaching methods. He makes the classes fun and is very caring. As long as you show up to class and study this class will be an easy A!
McClellan is a fantastic teacher he is deaf himself; he makes the language very easy to learn and understand and teaches a lot of deaf culture. The only problem is that he has a very bad temper at times.
Probably the best professor Ive ever had! Really nice and very funny! Hes an amazing teacher and a better person. Genuinely the best professor you can have. Youll learn more than you thought possible!
This professor was great. He really cares about his students and wants them to learn ASL the correct way. There wasn't a lot of homework. Tests were fairly easy if went to class.
I just took ASL 100 with Professor McLellan (Spring 2019) and loved it more than I can say. He is so funny, I could probably listen to him lecture about anything. I think it was equal parts educational and entertaining. As some other reviewers have said, when he is in a bad mood (rare), it's a bit unpleasant. Other than that, perfection!
Prof Mclellan is the absolute best teacher in the ASL department. If you have the opportunity to take one of his classes you absolutely have to. His Awareness of Deaf Culture class was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken, but also one of the most informational and fun. He is a great professor!
Professor McLellan is hands down the best professor I ever had! Not only he is a warm welcoming person to be with, he gives amazing lectures, but we never had homework and I can take my time practicing ASL whenever I wanted to. He also gives us facts about the deaf community as well as his experience (at least it applies to the lectures)!!
Kevin is a INCREDIBLE Professor who made me absolutely love ASL. I would take his ASL 2 class if I had room in my credits! He is such a sweet person who wants his students to learn as much as possible. He gave us great facts about the deaf community and gave good feedback about my signing. Show up to class and study the lessons and its an easy A.
LOVED his class. He has a lot to share about the Deaf community & his experience being Deaf which I really appreciate. Multiple presentations in front of class, I suggest studying every day. Your grade will drop if you miss 3 classes. He has a temper & yells a lot but if you don't take it personally & can let that go, he is an amazing teacher.
He does not yell a lot. That comment is a misrepresentation. He is even tempered, caring, passionate, humorous. Some deaf people may use their voice to help make a point clear but they don't know how loud they're speaking. Can't judge on that anyway. Cool guy, great prof. I've seen him be very patient with slacker students. His ASL 110 amazing too!
He really wants his students to learn and appreciate Deaf culture. Incredibly easy class. Almost no homework. Grades really lenient. Final was a short presentation that could be done up to a week before the last school day. You didn't need to show up after the final. I just wish he used canvas.
Very kind and patient professor. He gives good feedback on what you're signing wrong. His lectures are good and the layout of his tests are good I think, especially for someone who's never been exposed to any ASL before.
Take this professor if you can! You will learn to sign, but you will also learn about deaf culture from someone who is deaf themselves. He responded quickly to emails and I never felt judged even if I made a mistake or had a question I felt silly asking. Grading is straightforward, so if you put effort into learning the material, you will get an A.
When I learned I needed to take a language and was going to take ASL i was extremely nervous. I knew I would do horrible and barely pass. Taking Kevin's class and the way he intructs and teaches is absolutely perfect. He designed his course for you to ACTUALLY learn. This is the most important part. He is lenient when missing work and can extend.
I regret taking so long to take ASL. This class was AMAZING. Very responsive to emails/messages. His lectures made me laugh on many occasions, funny guy. Teaches about the culture and speaks well so you can still understand what he is trying to convey unlike many alternate language classes. I'd DEFINITELY recommend you choose this Professor!
Professor McLellan is an amazing teacher: kind, caring, and wants the very best for students. He's an easy grader, perfectly willing to work with students as needed. As a signing class, expect to be very hands-on; pun intended. But still: please go to class. This isn't a subject you can teach yourself. Expect lots of vocab, humor, and ASL culture.
Professor McLellan is amazing and very knowledgeable in ASL! I enjoyed taking this course and learning a new language. Follow along with the textbook and watch his lectures, and you'll be good to go for the exams. There's a final project where you present any topic of your choice in ASL, but it's easy after practicing signing for a whole semester.
Professor McLellan makes learning ASL enjoyable. His lectures are engaging, with the right balance of humor and cultural insights. The class is hands-on, but staying on top of the material and using resources like Unstuck AI for study prep can go a long way. Recommended if you want to learn a new language.
Kevin was my teacher for several classes in ASL. I also did my practicum with him. He is an amazing teacher and an amazing human!
