He's ok, but takes his sweet time to mark assignments, like three months!

He's really enthusiastic and engaging. He digresses a lot
the best course i've ever taken + the best teacher I've ever had
An absolute visionary. Will affect your life forever, if you listen closely.
Excellent teacher. Comments on papers v. helpful. returned stuff quickly
very smart. very hot
he's a GREAT prof. He's super cute and he wears funny ties!
amazing prof, his lectures were just packed with ideas
His jumps from idea to idea during lectures! too hard to follow
A very helpful and caring professor.
Awsome... very interesting and cool material... obsessed with Buffy
Totally inspiring!
Should seriously think about switching to a career that doesn't require time management skills or care...like skull boiling.
smart, but phony and cutting. not too clear.
Great. Caring. Inspiring
his ideas are awe-inspiring. he is skillfully shuffling the academic world into a place it fears to tread.
One of my favourite profs!Lectures are all over the place, but fun.Interested in students' take on theories he presents and very helfpul in office offers. Very friendly and caring, too. And so cute!!
super duper friendly and willing to help; but the course material is really difficult to understand and lectures are a little scattered, so take this class if you want a challenge; and gabbing about buffy rocked!
One Kick Butt duder! One of the best profs I've had. It's impossible to fall asleep in class because it's lively, fresh, and thick with thought provoking content. Fun humour, intelligence, and style. The type of prof you would make a movie about.
one word: incompentency
very competent. strangely insecure and constantly making oral citations to prove competence. a young prof who is now very good who will one day be very excellent.
the best prof i ever had.
Its fun to talk about popular culture but his lectures are never coherent and you will not get assignments back for months, also keep a copy of everything you hand in to him. Nice guy, fun class, but if you want an understanding of the material, skip it.
Smart, but a bit full of himself. Not helpful at all. Very theoretical.
great dramatizations and stories, also plays funny tapes
extremely helpful, extremely nice. will lend you books from his own collection. excellent for office hours. the nicest guy EVER. (he learned polish to impress his wife's family.) fascinating, free discussion. highly recommended!
He likes to sing in class - what more can you ask for?
Totally awesome guy... too bad his lectures are so sporatic and scatterbrained... he's a little hard to follow at times
The only reason I stayed in the course. He makes the lectures fun and although he can be abstract...he is definitely a great prof!
He's friendly, & I definitely like his personality. It's the class that ruins it. Lectures = all over the place; VERY difficult to follow. Topics are abstract to the max. Most of the time, I was clueless as to what the lecture had to do with the class :(
Most profs are either smart or funny, but McNeilly somehow manages to be both. Entertaining, informative, and encourages individual interests. Very creative and open. My favorite prof.
Think of having Robin Williams as your english prof and you'll get the general idea of how his classes flow. Fun course, great prof.
He is an amazingly animated, funny man. Too bad the course is HORRIBLE. i encourage first years to STAY AWAY from 121...unless you like reading tons of material from rambling theorists that don't make sense. As for McNeilly...awesome teacher. bad course.
best prof ever. done. that's it. you will never regret taking one of his classes.
I never realised I could like Literary Theory. Having him as a prof even made me consider taking honours english (even though i hate reading..). Super super awesome prof. If you ever need to take an english course, TAKE IT WITH MCNEILLY!!!! :D
Kind, funny, sweet, smart, and engaging. He's so nice, and one of the few people at UBC who actually does cultural studies. If you're one of those people who needs to get your marked papers back within...say...2 months, you won't like him.
He certainly can be entertaining, but it's hard to call him a great prof when clarity is so absent. This is tough stuff; we need a prof who is here for US!
great lectures. funny and smart all at once. gets a bit hung up on greek and latin origins of words, and some background in basic philosophy REALLY helps. nice man, good times.
Great prof! Made English interesting, very knowledgeable, but I find he also gets too caught up in the Latin/Greek words. Talks during lecture may go by pretty fast, up to yourself to catch the main points of his lectures!
Likes the sound of his own voice rather than yours. Smart and ambitious, with little time to devote to your papers.
Am I the only one who still hasnt received my grade? Man, this is way too slow!!! 2nd term is gonna start in 4 days!!!
I came in late every day, but he didn't mind. Good prof, actually made lectures interesting, and reading included a comic book, (wrote on that on the final)Wrote final exam on first exam day, marks were released Jan 4=/ However, I'm really starting to wonder what it takes to get over 85 in English
Very funny guy, generated lots of interest in students of the material. Had a comic book as a course book, but way too long. Covered a bit too much latin words, and sometimes was unclear on what he was explaining. Overall, would be glad to be in his class again.
Kevin McNeilly was strongarmed into the department just less than a decade ago by Bill New, an old Canadianist who used to head the department and wielded a lot of power. Kevin is now lazy, unproductive and unprepared. His ideas are poorly formed and communicated horribly. Learn to teach again.
If you require spoon-fed linear thought with little substance than you will find prof McNeilly a challenge to say the least(see previous rating). With a little creative brain power the man will teach you more than any other prof in UBC english department. Brilliant, but not for the simple minded.
lectures like a pretentious episode of the Simpsons on fast forward...jittery from point to point like he's web-surfing with his tongue...ultimately superficial and uninspiring
Ce qui fait Prof. McNeilly est l'attitude affalée trop large de son intellect.
I left each lecture questioning,"Did I learn anything?" He needs to stay focused and stay on topic. Prof.McNeilly was always available to discuss papers though.
This course is really easy and the lectures are interesting but can get kind of repetitive. Final had no surprises and consisted of exactly what he talked about in class.
Kevin McNeilly ****IN RULES WOOOOO
The class is dry, but It's not McNeilly's fault. "Think Freire, think Heany, think Ngugi." Persepolis (comic book) and Supersize Me are the only elements that held my interst in the class. He's very knowledgable, pleasant, approachable. However, I didn't learn much at all. Glad I don't have to take ENG next year.
Reading list was interesting and diverse. Prof was enthusiastic but perhaps more intent on studying things which were of interest to him than of interest to the class. Don't expect to get an A without the effort that entails.
reading list was too long and not diverse at all. 6 out of 9 books were poetry anthologies. lectures were hard to follow, terminology was spewed out with unclear definitions. no clear though process was followed. didn't get our first mark back until mid november. i don't feel like i learned anything in this class.
Pretty boring required readings, with a few interesting works. Lots of readings compared to a small amount of lectures on each. He frequently references Latin roots and authors that, if you're like me, have never heard of.
no marking guidelines provided until after the first assignment was handed back. Not sure what his overall point to the class was, but an interesting, nice guy with a diverse reading list (that was a tad bit too long)
I loved this class!! Best first year prof I had, I always looked forward to the class b/c of the interesting topics (though some were DRY DRY DRY). It's his overall presentation of the material that made it fun. Great sense of humor, always trying to keep the class engaged, extremely receptive to questions and comments.
Class was enjoyable and relaxing. Texts were not hard to read and were given sufficiently time to read them. Overall, not a hard course and he's a nice prof.
His lectures don't really relate to material. It is hard to keep up in his classes, be forewarned. Make sure to keep up with his readings. Seems rather tame, but his marking scheme is tough. He is a very entertaining lecturer. However, he never did learn any of the students' names, which was kind of odd.
should cut down on the reading list and engage a little more with each text. not an easy marker, but a nice person.
Vague and easily distracted in lectures yet extremely picky when marking. Adores jargon and trendy theory, seems to encourage in analysis a level of abstraction that equates to complete removal from the text. Lack of linear thought indeed: he is unfocused, incoherent, and arbitrary. I found him difficult in every respect.
Great prof. he's incredibly cool and allows you to think for yourself. I'll be taking him again for 409. He's into new mediums. he's a bit of a tough marker, but his class is worth it.
He picks decent texts to read, we had a bunch of short documentaries, which were quite interesting, a graphic novel (aka comic), picture biography book, a 200-page novel and a 400-page novel. He is a very happy easy going prof. I really enjoyed his class. Final was not hard.
he's not you rypical "mirror has two faces" english prof.
Entertaining lecturer. As a result of his class, I ended up with a list of interesting topics to go look up later more than an improved understanding of the immediate course material. Essays take a long time to come back (difficult to incorporate earlier corrections into your later work). However: very forgiving with deadlines.
Interesting to listen to, kind of hard to learn from, but seems like a genuinely nice guy.. if he weren't he wouldn't be able to get away with his level of disorganization (the latest marker I've had in 4 years, unbelievable)
I can't understand all the negative comments. Easily the most entertaining lecturer I've had in four years at UBC. The material is difficult but I always looked forward to class.
His lectures are scattered, but I think that's just the nature of the subject. He gives you a lot of room for creativity when writing papers, and encourages new apporaches. Overall, an affable bloke.
His class is pointless... he kept on mentioning mimesis throughout the whole term. Lots of people complain that they don't know what are they supposed to learn from that class.
Really helpful guy! He was always more than willing to meet with students outside of class hours to discuss assignments and offer suggestions for improving our writing. Also flexible with deadlines, though he certainly isn't the best at returning assignments in a timely fashion. Really enjoyed lectures too!
I LOVED this guy! He always kept a good mood for the class, you could tell he had real respect for the authors we read, he loves the course material, and offered a ton of insight that came in handy for the papers we wrote. Probably in my top 5 favorite professors in 3 years of college. Take his courses if you can!! Such a cool guy!
I didn't understand what I was supposed to learn in this class. He seemed like a nice guy and was sometimes engaging but most of the time I zoned him out. Lectures were boring! The books were decent though. Persepolis was awesome. And he ALWAYS went past 50 minutes which was really annoying.
Completely pointless class. A class on Springsteen, Dylan, and music in general had me interested at first. He butchered the course with his ineffective teaching and snail-like speed of marking. Only got ONE mark (15%) back heading into the final. Does not respond to emails either and is hard to reach. How he is a legit professor baffles me.
This guy is a nut. He spends all of class discussing abstract theory. I love English Literature, but he ruined the course for me. He tries to draw connections between the past and present, but his attempts are so far-fetched...they make NO sense! He does not spend any time analysing the texts. HORRIBLE.
If you like theory, you will like McNeilly. If you hate theory, you will hate and not get McNeilly. He is a completely fair marker, and is very willing to help students out who show an interest. Go to class, you might learn something. If you don't go to class you'll start to drown (this stuff isn't easy to learn on your own).
This man is my favourite person in the world. Very dedicated, understanding, and knowledgeable. Great teacher, great guy.
Very dedicated and understanding professor. Put in the effort and it will return to you tenfold. Always encouraged me to push further in my analysis of course material; he wants his students to succeed in this course. Lectures and seminars were always interesting, always worth showing up for. A pleasure to listen to.
An awesome guy - really into pop culture (brought a buffy puppet to class and let us analyze youtube covers of 'call me maybe'). Is a bit of a late marker, but very loose with deadlines as a result. Takes a genuine interest in his students, if you go to office hours you will learn a lot! If you get the chance to be in one of his classes DO.
Really nice guy, very passionate about what he's teaching. Not a fan of most of the material, though.
Professor McNeilly is probably the nicest prof at UBC. He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes class interesting for everyone. Lots of laughs and is very expressive. He is extremely helpful and approachable, and tries his best to help you out. Class is not mandatory and you can still do well if you produce good essays.
Obviously knows his stuff and lectures are always interesting, never repetitive albeit can veer off track at times. Got a great sense of humour, witty, approachable, and understanding.
Lectures are the best. His grasp on the material and his ability to engage students in discussion was impressive. Always available for help, wants you to do well. Definitely one of the best profs I've ever had. Only drawback was that it took him ages to mark... It's been a month and I haven't gotten my final mark back yet.
I still don't know what was expected from me in this class. Classes always went over the 50 minutes and most of the books assigned to read were not fun at all, especially Findings. Took it to fulfill a Literature requirement, really glad it's over.
Horrible horrible horrible lectures. Close readings are necessary, but does content mean nothing? Couldn't get through a sentence without etymologies. Never seemed to be prepared. Often lost train of thought. lectures were useless. I honestly felt like I couldn't make it through them. I love English and hated it with him. Don't take his course.
Professor McNeilly is a caring prof and pretty great as a person. However, he is very slow to give marks back (I have only received one essay mark back, and have no idea what my final grade is yet, even though it is the end of January), he always lets class out late, and does not respond to emails very well. I did, however, enjoy the books he chose
He was one of my favourite professors at UBC till now. His way opening us to concepts that are so useful in textual as well as literary analysis is exceptional. His way of bringing things out of the box and having us analyze that, was really cool.
Kevin is very inspirational and knowledgeable, however sometimes his grading criteria is unclear and many of my friends were frustrated that he is scatterbrained and nonspecific. Personally I really enjoyed his class, however if you generally struggle in English or writing... I would stay clear of this class.
Kevin tackles the toughest of European thinkers with a round, off-kilter semi-understanding most distasteful to the old-country mind. If you are Giorgio Armani; he is a Big Steel Man sale sportcoat and khakis or Dockers. If you have great expectations-- he will lower them! If you like the island of Nova Scotia-- he will introduce you to "Old Hal."
Kevin was such a great prof! Although he did take a while to get our marked papers back to us, he genuinely cares about his students and their well-being. He's really understanding with deadlines and very approachable. Really smart guy, and was able to teach the material really well, and was obviously passionate about it!
I didnt like how the course was organized. I took ENGL 111(Approaches to non-fictional prose) with him. Im not sure if its just me, but i feel like he teaches you what the hidden meanings of the books are, but doesnt teach you how to come up with it. He also forgot to upload this topic sheet by 3 days although we were only given a week to do it
It's hard to review him because his classes are some of the best at UBC, he's such a nice guy, and his reading list is amazing. But he's also incredibly disorganized, which can make it difficult to do well despite fairly lenient marking. Overall he's a good choice if English is your strength, but if it's not I would proceed with caution.
Lectures tend to wander with many asides, but they are pretty interesting. He chooses great readings and cares a lot about students developmet and well-being. He is fairly easy to negotiate for extensions. There are 3 papers for this class, and a take home essay for final.
Professor McNeilly is super nice. That being said, it was tough following along in lecture because of a very disorganized format & lots of abstract concepts that went over our heads. He didn't return papers with enough time for us to review them, and usually only gave one kind of interpretation for each reading which made it seem pretty biased.
Many, many asides and very confusing lectures. Our TA was also really hard to understand, the class seemed catered towards a PHD English class rather than an undergraduate one. I often felt quite lost during lectures because of all the Greek words and tangents and feedback for essays, which were graded by the TA, was unclear.
Dr. McNeilly is a super understanding prof. Great for first-year classes. He can get a little off-topic in lectures, but as long as you understand the general point of the lecture then you are good to go. Most importantly make sure you do all of the readings that he has assigned. If you're decent at English then this course is definitely for you.
He ends up introducting many concepts in one class and goes off tangents often. While he is a super caring and nice professor, expect to feel dumb when he explains concepts. His lectures are a bit monotone too.
Often goes off topic in lecture. It is the last week of class and I have not received a single assignment grade or feedback.
Submitted 4 assignments and no student has received a single mark back as of yet. We were expected to write our final without a SINGLE mark or feedback. Went into every assignment completely blind, not clear at all what was expected and the class was essentially like watching a TED Talk between 3 profs.
He is fairly disorganized, gives vague rubric criteria, and tends to ramble off topic more often than he covers actual material. An ok class if you are already good at English.
Prof. McNeilly is a great guy but not a great teacher. The class mainly consisted of him rambling, extrapolating, and seemingly making stuff up. He was extremely unorganized and unclear, rarely did anything on time, and did not prioritize his own class. I can't say that I learned anything from this classlet alone understood what he was "teaching"
This was one of the most disappointing classes I've taken. McNeilly's lectures and delivery of content is extremely disorganized, he graded our papers very late, provided very loose and abstract explanations of concepts, and was generally not a very effective teacher. He seems nice and knowledgeable, but this did not translate into class at all.
Terrible experience. He posted the readings for the week the day before our seminar meetings (sometimes only 20 minutes beforehand), and I didn't receive a single grade or piece of feedback on my assignments the entire semester. He also submitted my final grade an hour after I submitted my 16-page term paper, so I don't think he even read it.
His lectures are entertaining, although they are often quite ambiguous.
Very interesting course with materials that flowed smoothly throughout the term. All female authors and combined discussion of a number of topics such as sexism, homophobia, transphobia and racism into the lectures briefly as well. Around 7 essays total in this course including the final exam.
His lectures are difficult to follow. Concepts are presented as though he is talking to himself, rather than breaking them down in a methodical, digestible manner. He is also very difficult to contact, which can be stressful in urgent cases. However, he is as kind and knowledgable as he is vapid and incoherent.
Not receiving my essays back in time for our final assignment was beyond annoying. Every class he assured us they would be done by the next evening, I would rather he just be straight with us than give false promises. He is very picky in his structure of essays but didn't even give us said guidelines until our final project.
If you want an English class for the literature requirement, this would be a good choice but be prepared to listen to this professor who does not prepare anything for lecture but rather says the most random unhelpful things. He will not hand back your assignments, and makes you question why you came to UBC. But at least its not that hard, no tests.
Dr. McNeilly is one, if not the, best professor I've had here at UBC. I highly encourage everyone to take his classes; they're an eyeopener to new media literature and general literature analysis. He also genuinely cares about his students, feel free to reach out to him! He does not have any tests usually, but mainly papers.
Kevin is really engaging in lectures and is always open to helping his students improve. His grading was fair for the level of this course, but we have only gotten one assignment (out of several we have done) by the time the final reflection essay was due, so we do not have a good estimate of our grades. He does not respond to emails.
The course was disorganized, but manageable with good time management. Lectures covered abstract concepts, but unstuckstudy's concise summaries helped clarify. Assignments were graded fairly, though feedback was delayed. Overall, a decent class for the literature requirement.
