BORING! but a good teacher really knows and likes what he does
Great teacher
Interesting, sharp, and fair with tests.
Boring class, but was fair in his tests and homework. QMM is a hard class, but I believe he is easier than most teachers that teach it.
Hard material and boring class but he made it easy. His tests and grading system is very fair
loved the curve
Very boring, tests are very difficult
"Jane wants more coconuts so she can have more of the good things in life." This man is so boring, he might depress you so bad, your heart will just give up trying to beat and you'll die -- or at least pass out with the other 90% of the class.
Great QMM prof. Tired to take him again for ECN, but he section was full. He is kinda boring but he is a every good at explaining the ideas of the class.
Awesome curve in the class. Boring class...keeps you the whole time.
QMM250 is a harder Business Class at OU. When I had him for QMM 250, he was supposidely easier than the other professors that eached QMM250 at the time.
He is not helpful at all. I had a problem understanding the stuff and it's like he did not care even though this is a hard class to begin with. Would not recommend and would never take again.
BOOOOORRRRRIIIINNNNGGGG! I fell asleep in every class and I'm not one to do that usually! He takes off a lot of points for silly reasons on his exams and computer projects. The only good thing is that he goes into so much detail that we only had to cover 1/4 of what we were supposed to cover!
Very hard class. Didn't explain things well at all. Tests are impossible, they are very long and nothing like the homework. Lectures are boring and hard to follow.
Straight forward with material needed for the exam. The exams are long and kind of tricky. He gives you a note card for notes on each exam. Make sure you do all of the assigned homework. He randomly calls people up to the front of class to present assigned homework. He is anal on project grading.
Prof.Murphy is a great professor. This is the first time in my life I am passing all the econ exams... His exams are hard. but he go over the materials very smoothly and very clear. After all he always have a happy face. I would definitely recommend him.
Really good at lecturing and helping you understand economic concepts. However, his tests are really hard. You need to study a lot for the tests and then you'll do fine seeing as they are a large portion of the class grade. You don't need to do the reading for the class, he explains everything you need to know in class.
Great professor. Teaches the material very clearly, and prepares the class for his exams very well. Four 25-point tests, no cumulative final. He's boring, but then again, Managerial Economics is boring. He does his best to keep the class interested, but its tough. Take him.
Great professor. Excellent lectures! If you take good notes, you do not need the textbook, his tests have no tricks and if you study, you will do good. I loved his lectures, because they were clear and understandable (unlike some other econ. profs at OU). Defenitely take his class!
Good teacher. Class was tuff. Take notes lots and lots of notes. There is no test preperation. So once you figure out the first one the rest are the same. ALEKS SUCKS!!!
Very helpful Professor. Aleks contradicts exams. Take lots of notes, work all the problems that he did in class and do some out of the textbook and you'll get an A.
This prof actually writes notes as he is lecturing to highlight important points. His graphs are easy to understand. Test are exactly like his examples so work through them at home. Will answer questions and is available in his office. Take his classes! Econ is so relevant to everything in life!
Prof. is really nice and willing to help students, but it is a hard class, and requires a lot of outside studying. Grades on a curve which helps on his exams, but exams are tough!!!
Horrible prof. He drags lectures on way too long and you won't get though everything. Your textbook is online (Aplia) and so is the quizzes. He seems like a pretty lazy teacher. Exams are really hard.
Cool guy, tries to help out the students. I liked him alot, if you like econ you will like him
Kind of boring, but definitely gives you all the info you need to succeed on his tests, which are LONG and BRUTAL. 75 multiple choice questions, half of which require computation of some sort. He grades easily, and you can get a B with a 74%. Sooo....take him, but be prepared to study and work and think.
The book is online. He gives Aplia assignments, but they are not related to his test. The assignments are easy, but the tests are very hard!!!!!!! Don’t take him; you will not do well in this class.
DO NOT TAKE. Even if you attend every class, you still will not get enough info to do well on exams, which are BRUTAL. Avoid him at all costs!
Good teacher
Hard, hard, hard class. I don't think it was as much Murphy that made it hard, it is just some abstract subject matter that just seems to all run together. He did the best he could given the subject matter. His tests were hard, but fair, and he curves the heck out of them.
Horrible professor! He over-explains EVERYTHING but not even in a helpful manner. Doesn't give enough time to take exams and doesn't care whether you finish or not. There's something insanely annoying about him that will make you dread going to class, which he'll usually go over by a few minutes. Don't take unless you're naturally good at econ!
Don't listen to the other ratings. They give him a bad rating because the material is hard. That has NOTHING to do with the teacher. This guy is an awesome teacher. By awesome teacher, I mean awesome. One of the best. He would stay after class 30 minutes to help me understand the lecture. All you have to do is study the heck out of his notes.
This class is impossible.
Professor Murphy is the best! Great class, learned a lot, would definitely take him again. Clear lecture with insight and examples of real world situations. He allows for the material to be comprehended by making sure the class understands economics. Take him to understand the true applications of economics in finance and accounting.
Awesome professor. The class is wicked hard, but if you have to take it, take it with this guy. His explainations are very clear, he'll stop and clarify if anyone is lost, and his tests are very fair.
Great Professor!! Always willing to stay after class to help answer questions and always emailed me back right away with any answer I had on homework or otherwise. He is really willing to do what he needs to help, the class itself is hard, but that is the class NOT the professor!
Really nice and helpful. It was great that he gave us notes, but he made them too wordy. He used too many pointless words that just added to the already difficult material. His tests are fair...but I promise his exact 1 hour 7 minute class wlll bore you to death.
easy professor, he spoon feeds you the notes by writing them with you on the overhead and tests come exactly from the notes, boring material but if you show up to class and copy notes and read them before exams i dont see how u could get lower than a 3.5!!
Honestly, this class wasn't bad at all. I got a 4.0 in the class. My advice, attend every class and take good notes. For tests I studied his notes and made note cards for the examples at the end of the chapter that he assigned. If you practice those over and over you'll be more than ready for the exam. He uses aplia but for tests I did not study t
great teacher...really enjoyed his class. He explains everything very clear and also has fair tests. His tests are difficult, but I am still managing to do well. I recommend taking him!!
He's really helpful and clear. He writes down his notes word for word from what he says. You really can't miss a thing. Projects are easy, tests are kind of hard, but if you study for them, you'll do alright.
Best professor at OU!! If you can take him. He wants his students to succeed and has good class system. Notes are clear and no surprises on the exams.
Professor Murphy shows a great deal of interest in the topic. I took the condensed course, and his lectures make it seem simple but the exams are fairly difficult. HW isn't mandatory, so it's easy to fall behind. Overall, great professor. Just take notes and attend class. I enjoyed taking his class.
He is a good teacher, but he tends to over explain things. The book he requires is an onine access code to Aplia that comes with an e-book. His tests can be hard but he gives you a lot of practice problems. Overall its not bad as long as you put in the work and study.
He was a good teacher, but his 'notes' were straight from the book. I did better when I didn't show up because I would just read the book myself. He gave breaks for my 3 hour long class though. It just felt pointless to be there. One good thing is that he doesn't just use tests, he uses 6 online assignments also. He's very organized.
One of the best professors I've had at OU. I haven't even opened the textbook. His "down-to-earth" nature helps you pass the class with ease. He teaches you important points of the textbook chapters and writes notes along with you, so there is no surprises on exams. Stats is difficult, but not with Professor Murphy.
Professor Murphy is probably the best professor I've had at Oakland. His lectures are very boring, however he explains the material in a way that is helpful and understandable. His notes are very easy to follow and understand, and he writes them in a logical way so when looking back later you can understand them. Awesome prof!!!
He has an easy grading scale but there are ONLY 3 tests, no other assignments, quizes, or extra credit. Our class average on the tests was a 68% which is a 2.4 on his grading scale, but some people got in the 90's so there's no way he could curve if he wanted to. Lectures are god awful boring. Doesn't use moodle. Dont take him if you dont know econ
Very interesting lectures. Does a very good job of explaining topics in depth. Made class fun to go to. Study your notes and you will do great on exams. He prepares students very well
Easy to understand lectures, easy exams. People complained about the difficulty of the exams (65% average), but the problems were straight from the problem set he assigned us to look through. If you pay attention, do a little bit of studying, and engage with the class, you'll be fine. Textbook is HIGHLY optional. I used it once or twice. If that.
His lectures are never ending. I would constantly zone out! He only grades based on the 3 exams. I don't think he has ever heard of moodle because he never uses it. Hard to stay focused in his class. Taught myself everything I know about economics from the textbook, not his lectures.
This professor teaches the material clearly and makes sure that you really understand all the topics before moving on. Although there are only three exams, they cover only the material that is gone over in class. If you do the optional homework problems and reread your notes from class, which he writes with you, you'll pass the exams with A's.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER MET IN OU
Professor Murphy is probably the best guy for this course! The class is incredibly hard, but his lectures (though long) I felt perfectly prepared me for the tough exams. Plus he curves. Its a hard class, but do-able. Take notes on everything that he says!
DO NOT take this class if you are an HR major. Took Economics of HR as one of my degree electives and it was an awful choice!! Teacher constantly says "to all my econ majors out there--what does this mean.." Well I'm an HR major, so please explain to your non econ majors. 4 exams, no HW or quizzes. HARD EXAMS TOO!!!!
Material is dry and he is NOT good at teaching it. Failed this class and it killed my GPA. The entire grade is based on 3 exams which are impossible to pass. DO NOT TAKE.
No help at all. Tests were terrible, when I went to office hours and asked on how I could do better, he said, "there's nothing I can do to help you" During the lectures, he pauses to think about what he's supposed to be writing for five minutes, at least 3 times a class, then says "I guess we'll just go with this" DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE
Class is based off of 3 tests. He makes them VERY difficult. Class average was a 62%. Asked a tutor for help and even they were confused. He tries to trick you on the exams too. DO NOT TAKE. When you miss class he "doesn't share his lecture notes" either, and doesn't explain anything well.
Mr. Murphy, was a great professor. He is very open to asking questions, and although his lectures always go until the end, it's all for a reason. I suggest that you take this class MWF, or any major class for that matter. The exams shouldn't be difficult as he posts the past exams online. Read the material before class and homework after.
Avoid. This guy gives confusing and overdrawn lectures that are unnecessarily hard to understand. You have 3 exams. That is it. They are confusing, this class is a GPA killer. There is no other homework. He had one EC assignment. One. His tests are very, very difficult and its at minimum that you study every day for this class. Unreasonably hard.
DONE TAKE THIS CLASS please!!! No powerpoint, No study guide, No online research, EVERYTHING is by "hand". YES, you have to write notes by you hand at every class, the notes is a lot!!!! Every class you need to write 4-5 page notebook notes and to draw the economics graph by yourself, the graph may not be correct. pleas don't take this class.
This class was a breeze. 3 exams, 6 quizzes (your lowest 2 are dropped) and that's it. The material is all really straightforward, as long as you understand how to do things like a % change, take a derivative, and are familiar with basic algebra, you'll do fine. Show up, follow along with the notes and you'll get at least a 3.0.
Unless you absolutely NEED to take this class for your major, don't take it if you don't have to. The class average for each exam has been around a 65%.The lectures are awful and almost half the class never shows up because they are that bad. Read the book and his online sample exam questions because that will help you much more than his lectures.
Smart guy, good teacher, tough class but he's an easy grader. I've learned a lot in his class and I'm not really interested in the topic. Tests and quizzes are somewhat difficult, but if you actually study they are easy and very fair. He doesn't try to trick you. For the tests, study the quizzes as often times have very similar questions. Good guy!
He teaches with hand written notes during a lecture, they are very thorough and occasionally repetitive. The class is based off of 6 pop quizzes and 3 exams, but he is very quick with feedback. He was always available to chat with during office hours. He is willingly to work with you if you try.
Professor Murphy is a very nice man who is willing to help you learn the material, in class and outside of class. Personally, I had a hard time with this class because of the structure of it. The class is 3 60 question tests and 6 hw assignments. 85% of grade is tests and 15% hw. If you're not a good test taker don't take this Professor.
Professor Murphy has to be one of the best professors I've had at Oakland. He's clear, sharp, and explains the material well in his lectures. No surprises on the tests because he covers the material thoroughly and makes sure that the class understands what he's lecturing about before moving on. Would definitely recommend this professor.
He is very lecture heavy. Writes everything on the paper and expects students to take note word to word. Should have powerpoint presentations instead of old school notes. Only Homework and 3 Tests for this course, No Quiz or Extra Credit. Does not use university's website for homework instead uses some other website for which students have to pay.
Would definitely recommend if econ is not your strongest subject. three exams which are each 25% of your grade, and then homework which is 25%. Has a very lenient grading scale. a 2.0 is a 60%.
Professor Murphy was pretty good. Lecture heavy & a good amount of homework. I used the textbook to read over chapters & to help with homework, but I wouldn't say it is mandatory. Exams are straight from the lectures so don't skip class. Would recommend & take again.
One of the best professors in the School of Business. Very clear and thorough about the course material. Tests are straight-forward and from the lecture notes. He doesn't try to trick you.
Mr. Murphy is very good at explaining, gives great examples, and is very nice. Be ready for a lecture from the beginning of class to the end, all of his notes are hand written and he talk a lot! His tests are difficult and can be confusing so I recommend showing up to class and taking notes. Skipping one time will be skipping about 3 pages of notes
Dr. Murphy is wonderful, I took him twice a week and have skipped a few times. The course is a bit too slow paced for me but for people without an interest or understanding of Economics this is good. I recommend not skipping and writing down everything he does, it isn't much work and well worth it. Use the book to help with understanding graphs.
He is a fantastic choice for any economics course. Show up to all the lectures, focus and take good notes, and really study those notes since that's all you'll have to study for the exams. Put in the effort and you will do well. He's a great guy
Dr. Murphy is definitely a solid choice. He's very clear about the subject matter and covers a lot in his class so attendance is essential to getting a good grade. Almost all of the test questions come from the lectures so pay attention and take good notes.
Professor Murphy is not bad at all. Don't buy the book, I ordered it the first day of class because he made it seem like you need it, you don't. Don't waste your money. Class had 3 exams just like the ICE examples from lecture and takes 4 out of 6 quizzes towards final grade. Plus he grades on a curve. TAKE HIM you wont be sorry, just pay attention
His class is super hard and tests are set up to make you do poorly. He doesn't really teach too well. The notes you copy down are handwritten on the spot, which I really didn't mind but others seemed to. I will have to be retaking micro, but I'll make sure it's not with him!
Professor Murphy is awesome. Hand-written notes and he gives great examples to help students better understand. His tests are hard, but if you're putting the effort into the class then they will be easy. Dont need to buy the physical textbook, just use online. I hate online textbooks, but this one is great!
Professor Murphy starts at the beginning of class and always goes over-board. The tests are hard and he has not curved them once. He seems to enjoy economics but his monotone voice makes it boring to sit through his lectures. Avoid him and get a better professor.
Its takes some time to get used to his teaching style but he is a great Professor. His guidelines are clear and he generally wants you to do well. I failed the first test and he told me what to do and I did a lot better in the second one. He will take it into consideration if you are improving, his notes are very important for the tests. Great Man.
boring lectures, pretty hard exams. all sapling is on chegg. class was okay
Professor Murphy really knows his stuff, and he teaches economics as if it's our first time ever even hearing the word, which is what I needed. The tests aren't easy by any means but his practice exams that he posts are very similar to what's on the tests.
Tests are 75% of your grade, study well the recommended problems and you'll do just fine. Little dull in lectures but he's a good guy.
Murphy is a very good professor. The classes are all lectures & at times can get stale, but it's normal. He teaches the material very thoroughly. The class is straightforward: it's made up of 3 tests & 6 online open note problem sets (like quizzes; very easy w/ unlimited attempts). Tests can be tricky, so study & they're easy. I recommend
He is a super nice professor. He answers any and all questions and helps out when needed. You should go to class and take notes, its the only way you can understand Econ unless you teach yourself/know already. His homework is straightforward and is on Chegg.
Such a helpful professor! His lectures are easy to follow and most homework is optimal. Has a very clear curved grade scale. Tests are straightforward. If you listen to lectures and study you will pass. His office hours are helpful and he makes it clear he wants to help you.
I chose Professor Murphy based on the ratings on this site. I am disappointed. The man seems nice, sure, but he is bad at stats. His lectures are nearly worthless so you have to use the online textbook to learn. I thought I was doing well when I 100%'ed the graded assignments. Then the tests came and low-and-behold, they are different entirely.
Nice guy but I am an A student and was scared I was going to fail this class. The grade is based on 4 exams only. Exams are very tough. He does have a curved grading scale which is the only reason I passed. Old school hand written notes.
Whoever takes this class w professor Murphy has to be the dumbest person on earth!! He is honestly the worst teacher ive ever taken at OU. When you email him he gives you one worded responses and doesnt even try to help. Does not give out extra credit and not to mention his workload is IMPOSSIBLE. also one of the hardest graders ever. AVOID!!!!
I thought attending the lectures would be helpful, but the first graded assignment taught me his lectures have no substance. You have to learn the course material through the book and homework assignments. Oh, but for some reason the exams are based on irrelevant stats definitions. His teaching is irrelevant to the course material; exams too hard.
Prof. Murphy was one of the sweetest professors. His Stats class was super easy because the homework assignments were worth more than the exams, and were parrallel to what he taught in class. As long as you pay attention when he is doing examples, you should have no problem understanding this class.
