This class is so awesome. The professor is pretty nuts but always keeps the class interesting with lively jokes and stories. Some stuff he says many professors would not say but he keeps it interesting with a great sense of humor. Def. recommend!
Kevin Oakes is crazy! It's more like an experience than a class. Definetly worth taking this class, because im sure you'll get a kick out of it.
This guy has too much energy...very interesting class and he makes it entertaining and enjoyable. The workload is easy but it's hard to get an A since his tests and quizes are detailed and you need a 95 for an A
Intro to world dramtic lit - GREAT CLASS! Kevin is so passionate about what he't teaching, which made it a class I actually wanted to go to. Even if it meant waking up before noon!

His nutty personality made class interesting. Quizzes contain **** questions. The midterm was easy, but the final exam was not. Read everything at least twice!!!

He is a tool
please dont take this teacher
LOVE HIM
Oakes is AWESOME. Cant wait to take the next class he gives. Come to class prepared to laugh and be entertained and to learn a hell of a lot at the same time!!!
he's a great teacher... one of the best i've had. you can actually sit through his lecture without falling asleep bc he's very entertaining. he's crazzzy... definitely take the class.
Kevin is VERY into and involved in what he does...he makes an effort to get to know his students and really cares about the material BUT...he can also be harsh and unfair at times, so be careful to a) stay on his good side and b) do your work.
He's insane, offensive at times, but in a funny way. The class is crap because he hardly ever teaches stuff from the text, even though he takes everything from the text for the midterm and final. Quizzes are tough! An okay class overall...
He's so entertaining and really knows what he's talking about. He loves the subject matter and makes you love it too. I also got a chance to be a TA in his class and he's an absolute genius.
He is the funniest, craziest man alive. The quizzes are so easy. To pass the mide term and final study from the text. He is so cool.
he loves himself more than he loves the 18-year old boys in his class... horrible professor, hopefully will be fired soon
He's an awesome professor. very amusing during class and very helpful.
Hands down, the most exciting teacher in the theatre department. He will make you actually care everytime about what you're reading, because he's that passionate about it. Oh yeah, and he's a hot redhead.
Oakes is a crazy professor. He is funny, loud, and easygoing. He can be offensive but without intent. I recommend this class. I got and A and i read the text only for midterm and the final. just make sure you read the plays and you'll be good
Great class and professor. It's very simple just do the work and you will get an A. It;s very interesting and he is nuts, in a good way. It's definitely not a class you will fall asleep in.
He is a very good professor. He makes the class fun just don't be shy. The class is even better when you participate. Read the plays out loud.
one of the best teachers I have ever had. He really cares about his students. He's sweet, bold, and rude, but in a good way. He makes each play fun and interesting to read, no matter how boring it actually is. I recommend taking his class even if you aren't a theater major.
he is the bomb! by far the coolest prof ever!! very funny. keeps you awake in class. the plays are interesting, nothing boring to read. for the midterm and final, will need to read the textbook. totally recommend!!!
do the reading! if u dont read the text and plays then it wont be an easy A an ull prob do really badly, extra credit on final and drops one quiz, oh and hes psycho....plays are short and not bad to read, if u do the minimal work ull be fine
Take this class, its amazing. But you have to do the reading and the work in order to do well. It is NOT an easy A, but As are very obtainable. The lectures are so much fun.
He is a very funny teacher. He is a bit on the offending side in terms of jokes but still very funny. He tests mostly on memorization. He knows his stuff and it shows. His passion for thea is also very apparent. His class is only ever boring when he goes over the textbook which is not too often.
This man is nuts! Take his class, you won't regret it...
Weekly quizzes on interesting plays. Midterm and final covers a lot of material. Overall, a pretty fun class where he keeps you laughing for about an hour and a half.
Kevin is an awesome teacher and his class is so fun to be in. The man is definitely on the brink of insanity, but that is what makes his class so hellerious. He only gives two exams and the final is not a cumulative but harder than teh midterm. REALLY GOOD CLASS TO TAKE!
amazing class but hard final.
Kevin was my favorite professor at Binghamton -- he's clever, hysterically witty, and completely out of his tree. Plus, he introduced me to some of my now-favorite plays of all time. Thank you!
Class was pretty fun, but if you are a sensitive person steer clear. He can be a little out there some times.
You will never meet a man more passionate about the material he teaches. It's worth taking the class just to hear him speak so eloquently about his favorite plays. You have to come to class and read the plays to do well in this class, but if you have half a brain you'll WANT to.
He made an easy class hard. Makes social comments that he knows nothing about. I'm not Jewish but he knocked them too much. He's not a professor but a genuine nut that has no place in this University.
Kevin brings great energy & playfulness to his classes, treating his students as individuals who he wants to help succeed. You won't find a more passionate artist or teacher. Classes are fun & well-structured. Very honest, direct & inspiring to study with. My deepest thanks to him.
Abysmal teaching ability and often expresses opinions on touchy subject matters like religion, sexual orientation and ethnicity. Also makes fun of students behind their backs and flirts with the prettier girls in class. Kind of creepy if you ask me.
i love k.oakes he was my favorite professor at binghamton. he is crazy but made me want to learn. take all his classes offered!
my favorite professor at binghamton! He's great! Had a great time being his TA

Not hard but you have to read the plays
The class material is very interesting, but it is run like a **** house. My advice is to be as loud and as annoying as possible, he seems to like that. Don't take this class if you want to learn in a controlled and understandable atmosphere.
TAs were useless. fun class no doubt but alot of **** reading from the text book... beware
Took class thinking it would be easy but I was wrong. You have to read a play every week and take a quiz on facts he thinks are important from the play. Midterm and Final are worth a big portion of your grade and are really challenging. TA's although hot are useless.
He's so energetic that it gets annoying at times but it also makes the class more interesting. Some of the plays are pretty good. There is a lot of information to remember for tests so study hard.

HELARIOUS, i enjoy going to this class. He just says what ever is on his mind its great. He will make fun of everyone eventually. Very easy, if you read the plays its even easier
If you read you will get an A. Go to lecture, partially b/c you just need to reguritate your notes to do well on the midterm and partially b/c he is insane and hilarious. Not a class to be missed. If you are willing to read short plays, you will get your A gen ed and a boost to your GPA. FYI you are required to see 2 main stage shows at Bing.

Really nice guy. Tests are difficult, you must do work for this class. Very interesting course material. Kevin is hilarious
The best teacher I've ever had. He respects students who work hard and who respond thoughtfully to the plays we read. His passion & insight are an inspiration. You will never forget your classes with him!
Hes F&^^ing awesome
Tests are somewhat hard... Probably the funniest teacher ive ever had... Really cool guy and you'll never fall asleep... Never a dull moment in this class!!!
Went to the first class and thought i was going to walk out contagious with his flamboyant annoying ways. I should have known when he stood atop one of the lecture halls screaming about how it reminded him of a fabulous ship's galley. He is his own biggest fan. Dropped class immediatly.
Great guy! Class is soooo much fun. He's definitely a kidder. If you ever have problems, he's very approachable outside of class. Read the plays and participate in class. If he gets to know you, class will be so much fun. Gives a nice review before the midterm and final. Also, listen during lecture notes. That's where his test questions come from
kevin is fu#$king insane. he is the funniest person ever. if you are easily offended don't take this class. Class is easy as long as you read every play
Kevin is the funniest man that I have ever met...ever! His class is so enjoyable and the workload is very minimal. Just read the plays and you'll be fine. I agree, if you get offended easily dont take the class, he makes a lot of sexual remarks and jokes but jesus christ he is hilarious!!! id take his class again if i could
He is one of the funniest teachers I have ever had, although he often goes off on a tangent. It is your responsibility to read the required textbook readings, because he doesn't really review it in class. The tests and quizzes can be somewhat difficult, but rather manageable.
Hard at times, but worth it to take the class. Very funny professor, and makes a lot of good points.
Great teacher, tests are hard, quizes easier -- laysout exactly how he will be grading and what he will be doing in each class --- going to class is not mandatory but very helpfull, and also READ THE PLAYS
One of the best teachers at Binghamton. Go to class and take notes and you will surely get an A. People who leave right after the quizzes miss out on the Oakes experience not to mention information that will show up on midterm or final. Read everything that is assigned. The readings are not hard but you need to pay attention to details.
Kevin is hilarious. He makes lectures very enjoyable, not to mention you get out at least 15 minutes early each class. You must read the plays, but they are not bad at all. I hate reading, but these plays are not bad at all. Overall, put in some effort and it's an easy class.
go to class. so funny, and the exams are not easy, even though the quizzes are. most of the exams are from lecture notes. so go!

oaks is the man.
This is a great class. Kevin is amazingly funny and keeps you entertained. Make sure you read the plays because they do add up and go to class. Midterm and Final matter a lot, but if keep up on the reading its not that bad.
Absolutely loved every second of his class. He's funny and passionate. The class might seem easy but the midterm and final are tricky. Read the text and attend class.
Class was entertaining, I admit, but I didn't feel I learned much. He regurgitated the meaning of plays we read for us, and asked trivial details about them on quizzes. Parts of midterm and final tested ability to memorize famous people's names and theatrical associations. Can't say I came away from the class with much.
Kevin is a gifted artist and instructor. I am lucky to have learned from him.
he was pretty crude and although sometimes he was funny, the sex jokes got old pretty fast. also i feel like i didn't learn anything in the class, midterm and final were about memorizing peoples names that werent important and the quizzes only tested if you read the play.
oakes is crazy, but in a good way. Very loud and always moving around. Makes all kinds of jokes(many dirty ones), knows a lot about topics. Passionate for what he does. Will always keep you interested or laughing in some way. Dont skip reading textbook, mid term and final are tricky. Quizes on plays are fair. Overall great class.
quizzes are decent, lectures are funny but when you are taking notes its a pain in the ass since he is scattered all the time. Midterm andfinal are basically just memorizing stupid names and things he says from lecture so going to lecture is necessary. If you like to actually understand the importance of the subject you are studying donttakethis
This class was easy and a lot of fun. He makes sure you have a good time and there is constant entertainment during lecture. Tests and quizzes are easy, as well.
Without a doubt a little nutty but it's what makes Kevin Kevin. A little more difficult than I'd like for a Gened. With some effort I managed a B+. Weekly quizzes on plays you read and two huge tests (final isn't cum) Go to lecture, read the plays, take lots of notes, outline the textbook... and you'll manage. I'm sure there's easier A's...
he is a great teacher, and most of the plays are very interesting. but if you just want to fulfill the gen-ed, and expect to breeze by without putting much effort, do not take this class. remember to read the textbook and all the plays because they are very crucial for his exams.
Kevin Oakes is crazy! In a good way. He's always talking, moving, cracking (dirty) jokes, and doing unusual stuff like his own sound effects. And in his own strange way, he gets the points across pretty clear. Definitely need to read the plays AND textbook. Also, definitely attend the lectures. As long as you studied hard, the quizzes aren't bad.
Oakes is crazy! but very passionate about theater. The quizzes are easy, just make sure you read the plays. The textbook is essential. The class seems like a joke at first, but the midterm and final are KILLER. You need to study for them, and study the textbook and lecture notes very well. Hes really nice and very funny. Also curses like a sailor.
This guy is nuts. He honestly does teach a great class, but don't be fooled. If you don't go to class and read the plays, don't even think of getting above a C. He uses the textbook and what he says in class alot on the tests (especially the final which everyone fails), so don't think this class is an easy A. I thought it was and....... well yea...
At times I did find Oaks very funny, but then after a while it was like okay be quite...anyways his notes are disorganized, his quizzes are just fair, but his midterm and final does take a lot of effort to pass. This is not an easy class, please read the text book, takes notes from the lecture and study those plays!!!
This guy will really trick you. The plays are generally good reads and if you do a solid reading of the plays you can certainly have a 90's quiz avg. But buyer beware because when you get to the textbook questions on the final and midterm they are absolutely brutal. The details that are required to be known seem useless and make you feel belittled
Absolutey nuts!!
Kevin Oakes was the best professor. I enjoyed attending his class because he always was moving around and kept your attention with the ridiculous things he would say! His class may seem easy but the midterm/final are pretty hard so make sure you study. The plays are absolutely ridiculous!! But theyre soo gooood! Take this class if you can!!:)
he's CRAZY and has no couth. class is rarely boring and most plays r fun to read. dont take this class if u cant handle being laughed at and made fun of. he never starts on time and ends class early. quizzes are tricky. tests are easy if you study A LOT. EVERY class we learn something that will be on the tests so you should never miss a class.
This is by far the best class I have ever taken/will take. The man is almost clinically insane and there is never a dull moment. Most of the plays are interesting and all the quizzes and tests are easy as long as you READ all the plays and the textbook. You can't miss a class cause he usually gives out important test info, but why would you want
absolutely crazy but so interesting.
Very funny and interesting professor! If you are a Sorostitute, you will be picked on. As great as he is, he warns everyone about the midterm and final. You HAVE to study for these two otherwise you will get a low grade.
Very funny and interesting professor! If you are a Sorostitute, you will be picked on. As great as he is, he warns everyone about the midterm and final. You HAVE to study for these two otherwise you will get a low grade.
The things he says are ridiculous and can be offensive to some people. Makes class fun though. Attendance is not always necessary but he gives quizzes on plays that can be tough. There are a lot of plays to read. Midterm and final is not easy, takes a lot of memorization(like specific lines of characters you have to recognize). Took effort for A.
I love this teacher. He's really funny during class. his midterm and finals are a little bit hard but he discuss everything during class.
worst professor ever
Is not qualified to teach cuz he does not respect students.his play "vomit talk of ghosts"is the best play in the world cuz it really makes me vomit when I read
Crazy prof! Loves to curse and talk about sex. He's extremely entertaining and you are guaranteed to have laugh at his lectures. His tests are really hard and ask questions on very small details. The plays you read are easy but the textbook is complicated. Bottom line the teacher is great but the tests are very hard.
dont take this class, he curses and constantly makes fun of students. he jokes around all class and makes it so hard to know whats important for the final and midterm. the quizzes are easy but tests were crazy hard. i dont recommend this class to anyone unless you want to write every word he says down because anything can be on the final
He is funny at times but at others he is just extremely inappropriate. He makes fun of students and talks about nonsense all class and then expects you to do well on the final and midterm. Quizzes are really easy but the final and midterm are very difficult. A lot of reading is required. I wouldn't say it's easy A, maybe an easy B/B-
extremely inappropriate. he thinks he is trying to relate to younger students by talking about sex, but it's just plain weird. class is mediocre at best. easy quizzes, hard 120 question final and midterm because anything is game. wouldn't really recommend this class.
Very entertaining. This class is interesting and fun. Makes you actually want to attend lecture. Plays are easy and entertaining, he goes over them in class. Easy quizzes. Go to class pay attention read the text book and you'll get an A easily.
Oakes is great. Wildly inappropriate and entertaining. Likes to get to know his students, wants us all to do well, acts kinda like a tough guy and picks on people but he's actually really sweet and cares a LOT about his students. Good person & good prof!
Awesome professor. I would highly recommend this class. It's an easy A as long as you go to class, read the plays, and do minimal studying. It is fun and interesting and I loved it. Yeah, he is inappropriate at times but he's pretty clear about it so if you don't like it don't take the class.
He gets REALLY off topic in class. You have to pay close attention to find the notes in between the anecdotes. He also curses and is kind of vulgar, but if you like that sort of thing then he's really funny. Quizzes on every play you read, they're really easy if you read the play. Midterm and final are on everything he says in class so go to class!
funny, vulgar, and i actually learned! funnest class ever.
Funny, vulgar, clear, helpful, respectful, competent. Excellent teacher. Enjoyable class.
Professor makes the course too hard for a A Gen-ED.
Not only should everyone in Binghamton take a class with Kevin at some point, but everyone should take the time to get to know him. He's hilarious and inappropriate like no other, yes, but he's also incredibly intelligent and interesting. Great professor, great person.
Hilarious professor. Makes great vulgar jokes. I wasn't very interested in the topic before taking the class but really like it after. The plays he chooses to read are interesting for the most part. The quizzes are straight-forward and not very hard. Though the subject matter is easy, it's chosen well so you actually learn. I highly recommend it.
Very sarcastic and inapropriate
%90 of what he says in class is vulgar nonsense the other %10 is actual important information. Quizes are very specific so analyze each play you read! Midterm is long&Commulative, Final is impossible
Awesome Teacher and class is always entertaining you can even just mess around on your laptop. However if you take it simply for the Gen-Ed its a lot of work and time that goes into it.
Real Funny guy. Took this as a gen ed, and if it is not an easy A by any standards. A lot of reading and the listening quizzes take a ton of studying. If you can get passed all of this, he is an extremely funny guy and you can bring your computer and play games and he doesnt care. The lectures seem useless, but the answers to final are there.
Oakes is a wildly popular, funny teacher. You can tell he has a great respect and appreciation for the subject. The class requires a lot of listening and memorizing music, but he's more than willing to give you the tools to prepare for each quiz. He's friendly and will take the time to know you by name and engage you in his antics if you let him.
He is a very enthusiastic professor, funny at first but it just gets old and annoying. Tests are not what I expected, and you need to pay attention to the little details in the readings and lectures to do well on them. Music quizzes were annoying and tedious. Overall too much unclear work just to fulfill a Gen-Ed.
Professor Oakes is hilarious, entertaining, very intelligent, and the lectures were fun and engaging. The quizzes were relatively easy, the midterm was super-easy, and the final was moderately easy. Read the plays a few times, pay attention in lecture, and you'll be fine. Great professor! Really enjoyed the class
KEVIN IS THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAD IN BINGHAMTON. A CLASS ONE MUST SURELY TAKE FOR BOTH GETTING A GOOAD GRADE AND HAVING FUN. AS LONG AS YOUR READ THE MATERIAL YOU ARE SURE TO DO GOOD!
all he talks in class is nonsense and very very little is important. this course is extremely hard. if you want to get a better grade you must memorize all the things including the textbook, plays and lectures. The exams includes around 130 questions, which will drive you crazy definitely!
He is very funny and we can say a bit inappropriate. He talks a lot in class I couldnt follow most of the time. The exams require a lot of work. You have to read the plays and know the characters cuz there are quotes of them. There are too many questions on the exams. Too many memorizing not for me.
Class is divided 50 50 w/ ppl who either obsessed w/ thea or ppl who are indifferent. No open office hours . Lecture is 60% vulgar nonsense, 30% lisening to songs(u wont remember), and 10% relevant info. Weekly listening quizes make u recognize 30+ songs and list the play, characters, lyrcist, composer,(no partial credit). 100+ question midterm/final
Such a great teacher! Take him for theater 101! His class is delightful and I don't even like theater! It is a very easy A. Just show up for the midterms, the quizzes are optional. He literally gives out A's. In the beginning of class, (before the drop deadline) he makes it seem like his class is hard, so people leave. DON'T DROP IT!! EASY A, stay!
Kevin is disgustingly vulgar and incredibly rude. I know more about his sex life and body hair than I do about the material. He's extremely offensive and probably the most obnoxious person I've ever met. Don't take if you dislike baseness.
OK professor. He is pretty straightforward with the materials and things that will be on the tests. But you have to memorize a lot of details of plays and things he says in lecture. It's definitely not an easy A as some people might tell you. Unless you can put a decent amount of effort in this class, I'd advise not taking it.
Kevin wastes a lot of time in class having personal conversations with the theater obsessed students who ride him every class. He uses a lot of sexual humor and treats this class as though everyone is majoring in it. Quizzes are bs & midterm is 120+ questions with no curve. Class not recommended unless you're in love with musical theater.
Probably the only GenEd I've enjoyed at Binghamton (and I am not a theatre major). I never felt stressed out about this class. Lectures were fun and enjoyable and extremely helpful. The exams covered a lot of material but it's just memorization so make some flash cards and study with a friend. Very clear syllabus to keep you on track!
Before taking the class, I thought I'd be bored out of my mind. I'm not interested in theater at all, and eventhough the class wasn't informative/useful, it was probably the funniest most entertaining class I've taken/will ever take. Kevin is absolutely hilarious and I looked forward to his class everyday. He is a nut, but he's great.
Oakes is a mad man but i loved it. He made lecture entertaining, just make sure you dont skip because kevin>textbook according to kevin. He is very vulgar but funny and the work is manageable. Highly recommend taking class with him.
I think a lot of people take this class thinking it will be an easy A, however if you don't like musical theatre it's not. Quizzes can be a bit difficult and the midterm and final were about 130 questions long. He's definitely an interesting guy, but can get off track very easily. Textbook isn't hard to read.
Kevin is crazily hilarious, math major but loved this theater class. If you take the class honestly (not knowing quiz questions prior), It's impossible to get an A. Always at least one question on the quiz thats a wtf question. I memorized everything on my notes for the final and got an 88. GOTOCLASS. Easy Bplus , but A ? nah, love him tho gonna ta
You might think this class is useless or that the content might be boring, but he makes the class so interesting it's actually one of my favorite class ever.
Class could be cool, but Kevin is dead-set on making the assessment uselessly hard & meaningless. The plays that he chooses really do have merit, and the work load is not demanding, but due to the disconnect between the learning and the tests/quizzes, it was tough not to stew in anger in this class. I think I'm going to get an A but I'm not proud.
This class was just bad. Kevin spends most of the class just talking to the classmates that are the teacher's pets and doesn't stay focused at all. At first, his vulgarity is funny but then it just gets really old. Monday movies were jokes and just obnoxious. If you're between this and another Gen-Ed, choose the other class
I came to Bing wanting to be pre-med. After taking this class, I no longer wanna be pre-med and I'm gonna pick up a theater minor. This is my favorite class. I have always LOVED Broadway, and this class only confirmed that my love for Broadway has real potential in my academic world. Kevin makes an hour and 25 minute lecture doable. TAKE THIS CLASS
I absolutely LOVE this class! He is a bit strange, but that just makes the class the more doable! He assigns textbook readings for each class, but he says everything that's important in each chapter, so just take notes and pay attention. There's no outside work at all and he's pretty lenient with his quiz answers. Definitely an easy A!
Amazing class! Kevin is hilarious and lectures are super interesting, but also very important to go to for info on midterm and final. Listening quizzes seem like they'll be tough, but they're not bad at all. Midtermfinal are 100+ qs, but they're not bad and are less points per q. Def take it, you won't be sorry!
Great professor, he's very entertaining. Lecture will never be boring. As long as you follow along for lecture and study for exams you will definitely get an A in the class. He doesn't make the exams complicated, very straightforward.
Kevin is a great professor who is very passionate about theater. However, do not underestimate this class. It requires tons of memorization. Your grade is based on music quizzes, story quizzes and the midtermfinal. But Kevin is very detail oriented which is not necessarily the best fit for all students. All his exam questions are from lectures.
Kevin is great during lectures, always cracking jokes and making the lectures interesting. The quizzes he gives out require a lot of studying, consisting of memorizing characteristics of musical's songs, as well as quizzing on play scripts. The TAs do all of the grading, so Id recommend to get to know your TA well. Overall good class, a lot of work
Funny but worst professor ever. His tests are obnoxiously hard.
He thinks that everyone of his students is doing just as many drugs as he is. It was annoying to have to sit through his lectures where he would go off on random things and then the class before the exam cram all the information. There were lots of quizzes. He knows what he's talking about but really the material is useless.
Lectures are not clear and difficult to understand. Hard to tell the difference between his own notes and the textbook notes. Never utilizes PowerPoint presentation so whenever he uses foreign terminology you will never be able to get the spelling right, and if you don't get the spelling right, you won't know what he's talking about. He'snotserious
Entertaining teacher, but the class is just poorly designed. Tests are not about understanding material but instead just pure memorization. I mean conceptual stuff does matter, but if you don't memorize things like famous theater people, the theater they were affiliated with, the works they are most famous for, etc, you won't be able to do well.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. He is a great guy, but the class is insanely difficult for no absolute reason. You can study for hours and hour and not do well because his tests are the most random creations. I advise everyone to STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. SAVE YOURSELF NOW- DONT DO IT. NOT WORTH IT. NOT EASY AN A.
I thought this class was going to be an easy A but sadly no. Don't take this class especially if you have a crazy schedule.
Kevin is interesting. A lot of male students find him funny due to his crude sense of humor. I found him to be offensive and rude. You HAVE to read the plays (30% of grade?), you HAVE to attend the plays he tells you to (10% of grade) and go to lecture. A lot of exam questions come straight from Kevins mouth, not just the textbook. Not an easy A.
By far the best professor I've had at Binghamton. The people who gave terrible ratings are most likely those who have never been criticized before in their lives. He gives you a dose of reality in a hilarious way. He knows his material and his lectures are amazing. Get to know him outside of class and you won't be sorry. Must take his class.
THEA 102 WAS THE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. if you can't memorize everything that Kevin oaks says be ware you will get below a C. It is sad that with the hard courses i took this semester, theatre was my absolute lowest grade. Studied for the final for 2 weeks for hours and still did terrible. DO NOT TAKE THIS ITS BRINGS DOWN GPA AND STRESSFUL
Everyone at Binghamton should take a class with Kevin. Amazing lectures. Brilliant man. Best professor at Binghamton. If other professors were as intelligent as he is, the school would be a much better place.
I learned so much in this class. I actually enjoyed writing the final paper. He opens your mind and makes you think in a different way that isn't the typical boring by the books way of most college classes. Must take. All plays were very enjoyable and I looked forward to this class week after week. Kevin is awesome. Not too difficult.
Teaches you to listen actively (something he talks about and teaches in class in regards to theater). Knows his stuff really well. Always entertaining. Introduced me to a lot of great plays. A little tough if you're one of those people who expects not to do any work at all. Overall totally worth it. Go to class! He always makes it a lot of fun.
Always a fun class. Pretty simple and straightforward. I always looked forward to going to this class. Professor Oakes is a funny guy and knows his material well.
Oakes seems funny at first but the crude humor gets old after a while. You MUST attend class because the TA's take notes off of every single thing he says in lecture and they become test questions. You have to read the plays and go to every single lecture because he is not very clear so you need to hear it. Textbook is needed for midtermfinal.
Amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable about theater. Never a dull moment in class. You have to Read the plays but they're all really cool.
Kevin is a great professor. Very helpful and knowledgeable. I very much enjoyed this class It was totally worth taking.
Great class. A lot of fun. Expect to read plays. They're all really cool though so it's totally worth it. Cool guy I learned a lot from him.
Kevin is very helpful with getting students involved in theatre outside of class. If you express to him your interest, he will be more than happy to help you out and find the right connections.
Funny guy. Very enthusiastic about the material, makes a long class seem short.
Oakes is a great guy. Expect to read 10 plays that are mandatory for passing the class. You have a quiz on all of those plays (30% of your grade). You have to attend two plays (10% of your grade). Midterm (30%) and final (30%). You have to attend class because he says the most random things and then puts them on the midterm and final.
Great teacher, fun class. Show up to lecture, they aren't too long and he mentions nearly everything on tests and quizzes in class.
Kevin Oakes, or as I refer to him, "Lil' Kev," is a god in human form. Never before have i fallen so helplessly in love with the material of a course. I came into this class for a gen ed credit, I came out of it questioning whether biology was truly my passion. Kevin changed me and I may decide to change my path to be more like him.
Oakes has a unique teaching style where he basically stands on desks and just talks. He's funny and lecture can be interesting sometimes. There are weekly quizzes on plays but they're easy reads. His tests are strictly memorization.
Kevin Oakes was fantastic in THEA101. He's not a professor for the easily offended or light hearted, but if you are interested in musical theatre at any level, you will enjoy the class. Oakes really knows his stuff and is very personable. There is a lot of reading, but it's all interesting, light, and enjoyable in comparison to other classes.
Really fun lecturer. You are going to have to memorize musical, song title, characters, composer and lyricists for a whole lot of songs for the listening quizzes. They really aren't too bad if you study a couple days in advance. The script quizzes are a bit harder, so you do have to read and notice little things.
Intro to Musical Theater was one of my favorite classes so far. Oakes' lectures are so hilarious you will never want to miss one. If you put in the effort, you will do well in the class.
Kevin Oakes has character. His class is a constant performance, and he's usually pretty entertaining. Make sure you go to every class bc most of his tests are based off direct things he says in lecture (write down everything). Also go to all review sessions bc he gives you exactly what you need to know for the tests.
If you go to class youll probably pass. DO NOT MISS CLASS!
Honestly, I found him really annoying. Super all over the place al the time, hard to follow during class and overall just not a very fun class. Wasn't exactly hard, but because he was so annoying I really didn't enjoy it. Constant side stories and unclear knowledge of anything.
A little crude, but he is an amazing man. I had a great time taking this class. Homework includes listening to music and very basic memorization.
This class was amazing. Kevin is always entertaining and no matter what we were learning, it was never dull. There is a lot of opportunity to create and get feedback on your own work. Go to office hours. He will always take the time to work with and help students grow a lot. I grew a lot as a writer in this class and learned a ton.
Interesting professor, quizzes are easy but midterms and finals are very hard
KEVIN OAKES IS THE MOST AMAZING HUMAN BEING I HAVE EVER MET. He is the only teacher who knows I even exist. He makes an effort to get to know the students which is incredible. Any time I need help he gives me his full attention and goes out of his way to tell me every single thing that I need to know. take musical theater it changed my life!
Such an awesome man! Classes never fail to be entertaining but you'll also learn a lot if you're paying attention. The quizzes aren't bad but you have to really read thoroughly-final exam and midterm are a little difficult because theres a lot of names and material to memorize.
Kevin is entertaining to say the least. He has no filter, so if you're overly sensitive this may not be the best class, but otherwise lectures are often funny and enjoyable. You have to read one play per week for weekly quizzes, which are usually easy, and you can usually read the whole play in one sitting if you really want to. Worth taking.
quizzes are easy but midterms and finals are hard so be careful.
I LOVE KEVIN! He keeps his students interested during his class by running up and down the tables and sharing funny stories. There is not a lot of work for the class, you have to read one play a week and take one quiz a week but they are easy. Midterm and final have a lot on them, but if you study hard and go to review sessions you will be fine.
You absolutely have to listen to every word he says in class or you will not pass the midterm and final. He's a nice enough guy. He's known for teaching, while standing on students desks. Some people love him, some people hate him. Just get ready to take notes, read musicals, and take listening quizzes. Interesting class, more work than I expected.
Kevin is such a good professor and all of his lectures are relevant to his tests. He is very clear and wants you to pass. You have to read 10 plays and you have a quiz on them weekly but they're easy if you read them. His tests were manageable but you have to go to all the classes to get all the information you need!
Kevin was a great and entertaining teacher. As long as you pay attention in class and take down the notes he tells you to, you will do well. Make sure you do well on the listening quizzes as they will bring up your average. Also make sure that you really read the textbook for the midterm and final or you won't pass
Kevin Oakes is the man. So entertaining. And obviously this subject seriously rocks. Who wouldn't want to listen to Rent, Hair, Hamilton etc for a class. I also hear THERE ARE SOME REALLY DOPE AND HOT TAS NEXT SEMESTER SO TAKE IT! Kevin is seriously so entertaining. If you try in this class you will get an A+ like I did! Good luck kids.
Went in to this class on the first day and saw the most outrageous, bombastic, crude, loud, flamboyant professor I have ever taken a class with. I left still thinking all those things, but I learned that he was also humorous, detailed, devoted, and most of all caring, because it's rare to have a professor that actually loves the subject so much.
Awesome professor. Show up to class, take notes, and memorize everything he says (including his jokes) and you'll do well in the class. Midterm and final are 140+ questions of memorized facts, but are not cumulative. Very understanding professor, highly recommend.
Kevin is a great professor and the class is simple. Read the plays each week, which arent even that long and youll do find on the quizzes. You have a midterm and a final which are fair but whats annoying is that some of the test is stuff he says in lecture thats not in the book making the tests kinda unfair even if you study. Dont miss class.
Difficult for a class that is supposed to be an easy gen ed. Quizzes and the plays were manageable, but the exams were pretty unfair. He used things from his lecture and textbook. His lecture was long and he went off topic too much to know what to jot down for the exam. As for his personality, I did not like him. He tried too hard
Kevin is the LOML. He lectures from on top of students desks and is just so funny. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching and does his best to break it down for his students. You must take this class if you go to BU.
This is coming from a student who has no interest of musical theater whatsoever and took this class because it fulfills my last gen ed requirement. Kevin Oakes is a great professor, but unfair when it comes to grades. If you aren't passionate or have a background in musical theater, this class will be extremely challenging. 15+hours/week easy
The quizzes are super easy but STUDY for your midterm and final. You can study for quizzes the day of or day before, but with the midterm and final (which collectively make up 60% of your grade) you should read the textbook and go over class notes. Kevin is an awesome professor and the class is fine if you try.
His quizzes are easy if you just read the plays, but the midterm and final are much harder and come from his lectures and the textbook so go to class or you definitely won't pass. I loved Kevin, he's one of the weirdest people I've ever met but that's what's great about him, he clearly loves theater and just wants his students to love it too.
Funniest professor I've ever had. I'm not a theater person but still enjoyed the class. The class was more work than I expected; the listening quizzes weren't that hard but really annoying, as sometimes there would be 30+ songs. The midterm/final second part was all on the textbook; which was useless information that I already forgot.
His lectures are very interactive and hes just a crazy guy (in a good way). I learned a lot in his class but you really have to pay attention because the entire lecture is strictly what he says (no PowerPoints or anything) and he doesnt always repeat stuff. All in all it was a rlly good class that even sparked my interest in theater.
Frequent listening quizzes on the songs from the musicals. A lot to remember (characters, composer/lyricist, etc) for the quizzes, must know lyrics and textbook info for the midterm and final! No powerpoints, just Kevin ranting. Best to write/type it all down. He's crazy (in a good way) but gotta pay attention. The TAs were helpful w/ reviews. Fun!
Write down every word this man says (especially the random stuff) and you'll be fine for midterm and final. If you don't like taking notes you should probably drop. Textbook is important but lectures are much more important. And remember to enjoy the class; you won't have many more with this same energy and passion.
I really enjoyed this class and Professor Oakes. It is graded on listening quizzes, a few short answer quizzes on musicals we read, and a midterm and final noncumulative exam. We had to pay to see 2 campus performances. I loved Kevin's somewhat provocative humor and openness. Very easy A if you read, listen to the music, and attend.
Kevin is the man. Took intro to musical theatre with him as a gen-ed. Although I didnt have an interest in theatre, he made the class fun! The class focuses on a few musicals at a time& then u take a listening quiz for the songs& a plot quiz for some of the musicals. Easy if u watch the musicals online. Be sure to study, tho. I barely did & got a B
I never took his intro classes, but I would highly HIGHLY recommend taking THEA 306 for your H credit. He is one of the most passionate and enthusiastic professors in his discipline and really cares about what he's teaching. He is also hilarious and never fails to entertain. He always has an amusing anecdote that relates to what's being taught
Kevin is so funny and make class fly by. You're going to have to read a play every week and be graded on it with day specific questions so make sure to read. Attendance isn't mandatory but he tells you exactly what sections from the textbook will be on the midterm and final so its super beneficial.
Kevin is probably the funniest, most entertaining, and enthusiastic professor you will ever have. I have no interest in theater at all but he makes the lectures enjoyable. If you pay attention and take notes the class isn't that hard. The weekly quizzes are easy and if you study for the midterm and final you'll be fine
Kevin is a pretty crazy person but he makes the class very entertaining. Just make sure to take a ton of notes from his lectures. Midterm and final were both over 130+ questions. Quizzes every week on 1 play and you just have to watch 2 plays. Did not regret taking this class at all.
Craziest professor you'll ever have in college. You need to write down everything he says in lecture, which is usually just him spitting random facts about the material. Midterm & final had 150+ questions, but were fine if you took good notes. He went off tangent a lot so it was hard to keep track of what to write and what not. Textbook wasn't used
This class is NOT an easy A, so don't take it if that's what you're looking for. The workload was manageable (read 1 play and had 1 quiz per week in addition to textbook readings). Studying for the midterm and final was absolute hell. Tests are all MC, but we need to know very specific information from textbook AND lecture.
He is a great person but the class is tough bc the majority of your grade is the midterm and final which are each 160+ questions on direct recall from the textbook and plays you read t/o the class. In class quizzes aren't bad. You must go to class bc he asks the most random questions on the tests from lecture. Interesting professor, boring material
His tests are more than 150 multiple choice questions which is ridiculous however he is super funny and a professor that you'll always remember.
Intro to musical theatre is a great class especially to cover the gen ed "A". If you attend class and pay attention to Kevin's lively lectures you are sure to be successful. Listening quizzes are fairly easy and exams are based on what has been covered in lecture. Definitely recommend taking this class!
Kevin is a super hilarious professor. He tends to stray off topic during lecture but you still have to go because his tests are very specific. If you make sure to read the plays and the textbook thoroughly, you will be fine.
The class is good for an A credit and Kevin is a funny guy, but he sometimes spends more time ranting about his political opinions than discussing the plays (which is extremely hard to sit through).
KEVIN IS AMAZING TAKE THIS CLASS. the quizzes are super easy if you take a couple hours and read the musicals / learn the songs. midterm and final are long and there are specific questions about things he says in lecture. but if you take good notes, and go to the review sessions he holds, you can get an easy A. plus, hes absolutly hilarious
He is sooooo funny. I can't stop laughing and I don't know what he saying anymore.
Kevin is an amazing lecturer and a hilarious guy. Write down all of the information he says about theatre/plays/playwrights because it will be on the midterm and final, so you have to go to class. This is probably the best class to take for an aesthetics credit.
Loved this class! Kevin has a very lively teaching style. Write down everything he says because it's all fair game for the tests, but as long as you do this and go to the review sessions, you'll do well. Listening quizzes are easy if you prepare. Book quizzes can be challenging but after a couple you get a sense of what's likely to be asked.
Funny funny funny
Oakes is hilarious and will certainly keep you engaged but eventually his arrogance and rhetoric became intolerable. Moreover, most of your grade depends on 2 exams that are about 130 multiple choice questions on textbook and plays- SUPER HARD TO STUDY FOR. Oakes is very difficult to get a hold of for help after class. way too hard for 101...
Honestly the most entertaining class I think I've ever taken. The man is never boring, I never once dreaded going to class because his lectures always include amazing stories, and just paying attention in lecture is usually enough to get a good grade. Exceptionally vibrant and funny, and also the realest and most understanding prof I've ever had.
Kevin is by far the funniest person I have ever met. Class is easy as long as you actually show up. Write down everything he says, because he notices when people don't show up to class, so those are the days where he will lecture random facts that will definitely be on the final.
Kevin is a great professor if you're interested in theatre. Sometimes he goes on tangents but if you pay attention and take notes, you'll be fine. Quizzes are easy if you study for them.
Kevin is by far the funniest prof ever. While he tends to go on tangents and get side tracked it is important to go to class bc anything he says can be on the midterm or final. The plays you read are pretty interesting and the quizzes are easy if you read. I highly recommend you take this class if you can it's a fun experience (he loves to scream)
Take this man. He's honestly one of the professors that defines Binghamton. You hear about him from every student that goes here and he does not disappoint. Every lecture is performance art and he cares about his topic more than any other I've met. He will crush you for not doing the work, but it's fun and easy so you should just do it.
Love/hate relationship with Kevin. He can be funny, but he's very extra and can be pretty annoying. However, he makes a real effort to know all of his students and you can tell he really cares. His class is kind of hard for an intro class, make sure you write down everything he says because it's all fair game. Take this class, it's an experience.
The most enjoyable class I've taken at Binghamton so far. Kevin is very obscene and hilarious and does his best to make lectures fun and also tries to have good relationships with his students. Just make sure to write down everything he says and go to the exam reviews and study really hard for the midterm and the final and you'll be great.
Class is run like a circus which is fun for the first month but gets old real quick. You have to read 10 plays in a semester which could have been worse. The best way to do well in the class is listen to everything he says because he'll stress what will be on the final. Overall not bad but just an average professor outside of his gags.
Kevin Oakes is a very funny guy. I enjoyed some of the lectures because I really liked his character. The quizzes were an easy A as long as you read the plays. The tests, on the other hand, are VERY annoying. Again, the questions on the plays aren't too bad. When it gets to the textbook, make sure you pretty much memorize everything.
Kevin is one of the best/craziest lecturers at Binghamton. If you can take a class with this man, I suggest doing so. Need to read the plays, and attend class to get the notes (the TAs take notes during class and thats what your tested on). If you write down what he says and read the plays its an easy A.
Kevin is a super interesting guy and makes lecture really enjoyable. Theatre 101 and 102 are easy to do well in but hard to get A's in. You need a 94% or above for an A which is doable but requires a lot of studying. Otherwise, just attend every lecture and study a little before the tests and you'll do fine. Forget the textbook just attend lecture
It's an easy class and Kevin is a great professor. Make sure you take good notes and listen to everything he says in class, since that's what he puts on exams. There's 2 exams (midterm + final) made up of 100+ questions. In class quizzes on plays we read and identifying songs from musicals. A really easy class if you love musical theatre!
This professor is one hell of a guy. His lectures are informative with jokes of varying levels of obscenity sprinkled in to keep you awake and interested. There is a lot of listening and reading that needs to get done in order to pass. The textbook is helpful, but as long as you take decent notes, you shouldn't really need it all that much.
Kevin is all over the place. Has no structure at all. Yells random facts at you that you'll be tested on. but if you listen during the review and just memorize what he says, you'll be fine. I did minimal work, studied for quizzes right before and only read online summaries, never full books and I got an A. this class is more annoying than hard.
Not an easy A. He is lecture heavy. The midterm & final was hell to study for because it's based off of everything he says in class, quizzes, & textbook. He talks a lot & fast. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! They go over specifics from the textbook. Read the plays because his quizzes are detailed, and study ahead of time for exams, it's a lot of info.
Certainly not the easy A I expected. Kevin talks freely without curriculum and that shows on the test, they are mostly uncharted territory. Get ready for Patti Lupone as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes to serenade you in your dreams about giggilos . The listening quizzes drill the songs into your head so much that you will hear them in your dreams.
Favorite teacher ever!! The class is very doable with minimal studying because he gives you all the information you need to know
Kevin is literally the best. He's super opinionated so either you'll like him a lot or you wont. Attending lecture is pretty essential because you have to write down EVERYTHING he says cause its likely itll be on the final! Highly suggest taking his class!!
Kevin's lectures are a must at Bing, you will not receive a more entertaining class. He is hilarious and is super passionate about theater. It is easy to get an A in the class if you study and listen to the material. Those who got bad grades didn't study or go to lecture. Great and funny guy!
This class was honestly pretty easy. One quiz a week based on the play you had to read. If you went to class he would tell you what to study for the midterm and final. He could be petty if you didnt go to class, for example he told us about how he bought the notes people sell and doesnt put any material on the midterm and final. Go to review!!
Kevin is an amazing human, always makes me laugh. Anything mentioned once could be on the midterm/final (60% of your grade). Detailed notes & memorization are your key to success. Take the quizzes seriously. I failed the midterm, did well on the quizzes, and did decently on the final. The class itself is really fun, even if you don't love theatre.
An experience every Binghamton student has to have.
Great prof, highly recommend
never should've taken his class. midterms were like 135 questions which is ridiculous. don't take it unless you actually enjoy reading plays and LOVE theater where you would study HOURS and HOURS for it.
If you mind being randomly called out in a lecture hall of 250 people often, then this is not the class for you. He walks on the desks and calls out people for the weirdest things. You really have to work to get an A. There is a lot of information to know and your grade is basically just 2 tests.
Seriously, if you take this class and don't have someone who will send you the notes, you cannot skip class. Every little detail that he says during lecture is mentioned on his midterm and final. Quizzes aren't bad but you really have to read the plays, which can be kind of annoying, and GO TO TEST REVIEWS!!! they basically give you all the answers
Quizzes are 10 easy questions as long as you read the play each week. Quizlets helps if you want to study. Oakes is a funny professor but some lectures are boring. Just go to the review sessions and they'll help you know what to study and you should be fine. It isn't a bad class, easy class you just sit and not have much work beside midterm/final
Terrible teacher. Has a lecture of 300+ kids and constantly rambles about things that arent even about the class. Midterm is 135 VERY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS which is absurd. By far the hardest class Ive taken in college. Thanks Oakes! Do NOT take this guys class.
If you're not truly interested in theatre don't do it!! Kevin is a funny professor and I took the class because I thought I'll be an easy A but it wasn't. It doesn't matter if he likes u in class he's not grading ur work, TA's are. I never knew my overall grade and there are tons of quizzes (weekly) & the midterm and final determine ur grade. NO!!!
This class is literally so hard to follow cuz all he does is ramble on and on about things that don't even matter. Half the time he talks about his personal life and you're not sure when to take notes. The quizzes are a lot to read each week and the tests are extremely specific. Do not recommend for a "A" credit
As a lecturer, Oakes is okay. Hell make you laugh in his lectures. But if you take THEA102, beware: youre going to have to read, and youre going to have to remember all the small details about what your read. If you dont, youll get bit by your grade. Would have been an easy A if I wasnt gaming while I was supposed to be reading.
Too much reading, studying, and note taking. I had to quit my job to go to the study sessions.
Take anything but this class. Even if you like musical theater. 130 questions for midterm and final. Quizzes were stupidly hard.
Overrated class and professor, theres easier easy As than this one, theres A LOT of stuff to remember bc some of the test questions are ridiculously specific, like something he said ONCE in class weeks ago that might not even be in the textbook. I didnt find him funny either, his humor is just sarcasm and throwing profanities.
His sense of humor is different, but it makes the class really interesting. There are a couple quizzes, but if you read the play-scripts, which are pretty interesting, they are really easy. Lectures were eventful but not mandatory. Although doing the readings sucks, they are actually fun to read and are very easy to read
