DO NOT TAKE DR. O'NEIL if at all possible. Very hard teacher. Tries extreamly hard to make class easy but does not succeed at all! is a very nice guy but just not a good teacher
He's a very lenient professor. If you forget to do an assignment he'll let you bring it the next day. His lecture slides aren't very organized which makes it hard when you're reading the book. If you study the night before the test you'll get a C, and by the time he's done curving it you'll have an A. He's a good prof, but there are better.
I have never had a professor who goes out of his way to help you as much as Dr. O'Neil. He grades fairly, the experimental study is done throughout the course and he gives you feedback on all the writen assignments you turn in. He is extremely quick at replying to any e-mails. This class is not easy, but Dr. O'Neil is extremely helpful!!
I took him for Exp. Psych this semester. Unfortunately I cannon seem to win with this professor. I am a senior with a 3.7 GPA and am having serious trouble in this class. He is the toughest grader I have ever had. He is also unclear on how he wants papers to be formatted. BEWARE!
Not too bad. You definitely have to study for tests...review online website questions, and in class notes. You have to read the text book. Highlighting important points and reviewing helps too. Do the extra credit too. I got an A.
Experimental Psychology was a nightmare. Seriously do not take this class with him you will pass at most with a B. Grades really harsh and voice puts you to sleep. Research essay was a nightmare. Very unclear with expectations and continuously comments on everything you send in. Says something looks good but gives you a horrible grade; can't win.
He has some sort of speaking impediment that makes listening to him a pain in the ass. Other than that he's a decent teacher and throughout the group projects/presentations manages to make the class worth something. His various youtube videos introduced me to a lot of good stuff.
When reading these reviews, I was nervous to have him as a professor. I am glad I didn't listen. He's one of the better Psych teachers at FGCU and just like any class, you have to read and study. Powerpoints are helpful! People have complained about his loud voice, but after a week into the course, I got used to it. He's awesome!! Would take again.
I have nothing bad to say about this professor except that he was EXTREMELY unorganized. I never knew what I was truly getting in the class until the very end of the semester because he took FOREVER to get graded material back to us. On a positive not, he IS very flexible with assignment dates and allows for extra credit where he can.
I loved this professor. He brakes your research paper up into sections, so it is super easy to write. He makes this class as easy as possible. You will be doing lots of work. But its not that bad.
This was a very stressful class. Although he allows you to re-do most assignments for a better grade, he is very strict! This class involves a TON of work, so be prepared!!!
Hard class, but he's super helpful when you can't get it. The research project can be a nightmare. Lots of little quizzes online, but they're not that hard. Kind of a stressful class, but it's required. I'm taking him again in the summer.
This is a very hard course, but Dr. O'Neil is there 100% for all students; all you have to do is ask. He gives you many times to redo work to up your grade and to help you understand what you are learning. Amazing Professor! Again, very hard course. Pay attention and ask questions and you'll do fine. Passed with an A,but worked my butt off for it.
Very hard course, but Dr. O'Neil is there 100% of the way. All you have to do is ask for help. He allowes you to redo work to make a higher grade (not required)and to help you understand what you are doing. He explains everything very well. Even thought it is a hard course he walks you through every step. I highly recommend him. Good Luck!
Dr. O'Neil is a very nice man and a decent professor. I wouldn't say his lectures rocked my world, but they didn't put me to sleep, either. I think he presented the material very well and his tests were a breeze (if you read the book and/or took good notes). I would recommend him.
By far the BEST teacher I've ever had. The course was extremely difficult and writing the papers had me in tears at times but Professor O'Neil was there 100% and went out of his way to help when needed. He was always quick to answer emails and allows you to redo assignments to gain a better grade. Excellent teacher!!
Hard stuff but he helps you through it. Don't wait till last minute to finish things!
Although I wanted to pull my hair out at times during the semester, this course taught me A LOT and was worth it in the end. Dr. O'Neil will work with you at all costs and breaks the paper into sections. Definitely recommend him as a professor for this course!
Psych and law was an awesome class. Interesting stuff and O'Neil knows what he's talking about and makes the class interesting. I would recommend it.
Great teacher and works with you! I will take every class I have a chance to with this professor. I had him last semester, this semester and will try to get him next semester.
Hard teacher, hard class. There is a ton of work for this class and he's very particular about what he wants. He puts a lot of time into his students so you feel like you're getting individual attention if you ask for help. Be prepared to work your butt off though. Exams are hard. Paper is hard.
Dr. O'Neil is an AMAZING professor, don't get me wrong, but this class is very difficult. The papers are almost impossible to get through; exams are too. Dr. O'Neil is extremely intelligent and helpful, but this class is only for those who can handle the demands. He'll help you every step of the way, but be prepared to work hard for a good grade.
This class is hard hard hard. I dont recommend taking it online, however, if you have to Dr O'Neil is helpful if you need him. If you take it online make sure you utilize his office hours. A lot of material to cover and it is hard to keep up at times. Seems like a nice guy though.
Not only is this class hard but this professor is not clear whatsoever and does not tell you what to study or go over. He does not help when you email him or even go to visit him. He seems uninterested in helping students succeed. DO NOT TAKE. Especially not online.
Very interesting course and you can tell he knows a lot about the topic. He was clear on the assignments each week. He makes you explain yourself thoroughly in discussions and tests are very picky in questions. Overall, he will help if you need him and he is clear on what he expects.
DO NOT TAKE. Extremely tough grader especially when it comes to discussion questions. Tests are very hard also. He does respond to emails in a timely manner though.
Do NOT take him for an online class. He will assign you multiple group projects which is extremely awkward for an online class and his exams are impossible. He will assign you multiple papers and tests all due on the same day and is one of those teachers that thinks his class is the only class you're taking...
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE! This class is really hard and he isn't clear on anything. Way too much homework and he is a very hard grader. Expect to do assignments 2 or 3 times.
Took this class online over the summer and it is tough, with homework and discussions every week, but the professor is awesome. He responds to emails quickly and explains things that aren't understood. Quick grader, and makes sure you understand the material. There are a lot of discussions, but they really help you understand the material
Wasn't very helpful. I took a hybrid class, so at least class wasn't help often.
The hardest professor I have ever taken! Take another professor save yourself the perpetual stress!
I am a legal studies major and took this class as AN ELECTIVE and it was the worst decision in my college career. I am about to graduate and am interested in psychology and thought it would be an easy A. He assigns 5-6 assignments a week, The tests include short responses which you always fail. Work your butt off and be lucky to receive a B. 0/10
He needs to chill w/ the workload. The class is interesting & he puts out informative stuff, but he has us do group projects (online class), 6 readings per week aside from the text chapters assigned, & his instructions are walls of text. He also needs to be more organized; the tests are long & hard, but openbook. I'm probably getting A- but JEEZ.
This teacher is knowledgable but gives quite a bit of assignments every week on top of a bunch of reading material. I wish i hadn't taken this as a hybrid and i won't do anything as a hybrid again. If you ask questions he will respond but most of the time you have to wait up till the next day for a response or 2 days.
I'm not going to say that it was a breeze. But after taking this class I'm confident in writing research papers and all the terms that go along with psychology research. Hell, scientific research in general. You can't just regurgitate definitions for this class, you have to understand the concepts. Maybe I am glutton for punishment, but I liked it!
A tough but very fair professor. Gave lots of work but was lenient with dates and gave students multiple times to improve their work. One thing that really set him apart from the rest was his feedback. He gave personal responses to every bit of work the students did, which was quite something in my opinion. If really want to learn, pick this guy.
Took this as a summer course. He assigned 7 to 8 reading for one short quiz or discussion post. Exams are impossible. He just assigns way to many readings to even remember what you learned. He does go easy on grading papers but his quizzes and exams are almost impossible, you will probably wind up with a C or lower in this class.
His lectures are dry, but Exp. Psych is a dry subject. There was a lot of online work to do for quizzes/worksheets, but they're pretty easy if you give minimal effort, and you don't have to read everything he says. Attendance not mandatory, he uploads the lectures to canvas. Somewhat unclear with directions, but gives good feedback & extra credit.
One big essay that is broken up into parts and due at different times. He divides up the work to make it seem like less but every "section" of the big end of the year paper is harder than the last. He is a really tough grader and is HUGE on how well you cite your sources and whether or not they are reliable. Tough class
this class was probably the hardest class that I have ever taken so far. I got a good grade because of the amazing help of professor O'Neil. Every paper that I wrote I emailed him a copy and within a few hours he revised it for me and showed me what I did wrong so that I could change it for a better grade. FOREVER THANKFUL! Amazing Teacher!
He was a great teacher. I really struggled with this subject and I had a C the entire class. Professor O'Neil went above and beyond to help me the entire semester. I ended up with barely a B but I am extremely happy that I got it. Kevin O'Neil is one of the most caring professors that I have ever had.
Kind of disorganized, his lectures are hard to pay attention to, not very specific with instructions and rubric for assignment and papers and his assignments are very time consuming and not informative
Professor is very confusing on all his instructions he gives. Some of his due dates appear in canvas calendar and other dates are posted on the clustered pages he uses to post assignments. Grading is tough even when you follow directions precisely, still takes points off. Uses disorganized way of grading papers, moving your paragraphs around, etc
While this is a very difficult class, I have learned so much and I would not have wanted to take this class with any other professor. O'Neil provides great feedback and is very detailed in outlining assignments. He breaks the final paper up and provides thorough individual feedback and allows for revisions. Heavy workload but definitely worth it.
This class is very difficult, requires a lot of work and reading, but I really learned about psychology in the legal system. Professor O'Neil works with his students and is very detailed in his assignments. He provides a whole page of instructions for the week and while it is a lot, if you go through and do everything he says this class is not bad.
Tough course! It is almost impossible to pass the exams. The professor does give feedback on papers but still grades tough. No matter how many revisions you make he will still find a million other things wrong with your paper, which is frustrating after you thought you did well on it. I would not take this professor again. Workload is stressful.
I took the class online and it was a lot of work and very time consuming. It was hard to enjoy what I was learning because of the amount of quizzes and discussions. He was a very harsh grader and no matter how much effort I put in I often would still struggle to get a decent grade. It was very frustrating. You need to revise just about everything.
I went to every class and I found the lectures dull and full of material that I felt like I never truly understood. I didnt get to know him or his methods. I just found canvas posts and tests confusing and difficult. I would not recommend him. The textbook is enjoyable. He does his tests based off lectures and articles mainly.
Let me say this class is horrible. He doesn't give directions, wants things done but doesnt say how or where to find stuff for it. This is the WORST class I have taken. He makes something that should be easy a nightmare. You do one thing wrong and he makes you redo the whole thing. Highly recommend not taking him unless you hate yourself.
Professor O'Neil is a solid choice for research methods. Extremely smart guy. People complained about his "long instructions" for the virtual class; they are clear, thorough, and help you get the work done. Gives many comments on papers but grades fairly and offers revision opportunities. Take the class seriously and you'll pass.
O'Neil has got a bad rep at FGCU and I honestly think it is because his course is extremely challenging and difficult to grasp the research. None the less, he provides excellent in depth feedback and cares about the material. You will learn interesting information about various research. I think its a great prep for grad school.
O'Neil is definitely one of the tougher professors on campus. Lots of reading between articles he assigns and the textbooks. But he is good at giving comments on graded papers and will generally try to work with you to help you understand if you truly want it. You have to work for the grade you want!
DO NOT TAKE he makes psychology miserable and extremely difficult to do well in. Also he takes forever to put grades in so you have no idea where you stand.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. His online class is incredibly disorganized, his instructions and communication on how he wants things done is terrible. You complete a research paper throughout the semester. I didn't expect the class to be easy, but this guy really made it hard. He's willing to help you, but just not worth the stress. Hardest B I ever got...
His directions for online assignments are long and unorganized and he gives the same response to all of his students. There are 5+ assignments due each week and, I know that it's an online class, but he seems to forget that his students are taking other classes along with his. I have more work in his class than all my other classes combined. NOPE
This professor honestly makes this research methods class harder than it needs to already be. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He inst thorough in his explanations whatsoever. I would have given him 0/5 but that wasnt an option.
Took his class online. I was prepared to do a lot of work but it was like he expected us to only have work in HIS class. Way to much work and way to much videos and research papers . He would post 20 a week and expect us to read it all and read 60+ pages in the text book as well as take 3 quizzes and 3 discussion posts . Do not take his class
I wouldn't recommend taking Dr. O'Neil at all, for anything. O'Neil seems to have a nat for making an already tough class, tougher. He requires three different textbooks: yes, you use all three, and he does not give clear direction AT ALL. The assignments are long unnecessarily, and he is a harsh grader. If you do not know APA, MASTER it ASAP.
Great course material but he expects a lot. Discussions are interesting but require exceptional responses to back up your work. Tests are very difficult, study the material thoroughly. Three small projects and many quizzes plus 4 exams. He is not a bad professor just don't expect to breeze by and receive an easy A work for it
Professor ONeil is a rough teacher all around, I say rough and not tough for a reason. His grading process is incredibly arbitrary and he even takes time to go back and lower grades on assignments you already turned in. He doesnt give you much direction outside read the notes or research it further . Bourgeois is much better all around!
This was a very hard class to take online. He has no lectures, expects you to read 60+ pages from the textbook, PowerPoints, and outside materials. There are about 3-4 quizzes and at least 2 discussions weekly. Material from all of these INCLUDING discussions is on the exams. Exams are hard and tests specific memorization instead of comprehension.
This class is pretty difficult but it makes sense because its 4 credits and a research class. I dreaded doing the paper but he was super helpful and made sure that we wrote parts of our paper every few weeks for him to give us feedback on. You then edit that and put it all together and BAM there's your research paper. You will need to put in effort
I had to take this class during corona so everything was switched to online and he was not helpful with it AT ALL. He gave assignments without any form of assistance and when asking for assistance, he simply told you to reread the instructions again. Personally, I was not a fan of him at all and don't recommend.
I HATED this class with this professor so much. This is not a good class to take online because I was genuinely so confused throughout the entire semester. I have this professor for this class and another class and will never ever choose him again. Both classes left me confused and feeling like I had learned nothing. Overall I am dissapointed.
This professor was actually pretty good. Idk where the bad reviews are coming from. He does give a lot of work but its mostly easy. He is very thorough with the assignment details and will explain more if you still don't understand. He is also very good with responding to emails.
Professor O'Neil makes you work for it but as long as you read the book and his notes maintaining an A isn't too difficult. He is good with emailing and provides great feedback that you will learn from. Overall, the class was interesting you just have to study.
Dr. ONeil is a good professor but he expects you to do the work. He is a fair grader and gave extra credit at the end. There are weekly discussions and he will ask for more information but it gets you a higher grade. If you email him for help he always responds. It requires work but you can definitely get an A.
If you want to grow in your writing skills & actually learn research methods, take Dr. O'Neil. He does not mess around. He's extremely serious but he is very thorough & you get your tuition's worth. You will not pass this class if you don't apply yourself. Reply on every discussion post, read his balloons when he gives feedback & APPLY suggestions!
Professor O'Neil wasn't horrible, just expected a lot. He was a pretty tough grader but if you stay connected and communication was there, you will pass! Get ready to read the required text book as well as articles.
I have legitimately never experienced a professor like this. The class is 100% virtual, which shouldnt even be allowed because Ive learned nothing. Professor ONeil posts extremely wordy and long directions that make no sense unless you read them about 15 times, then they make only a minuscule amount of sense. I would avoid if it all possible.
Heavy writing based course. I would recommend the full semester, NOT the summer. Expected discussions about more current events, not the same curriculum that's been taught 10+ years. Definitely thorough and NOT an easy A! Not the worst i've ever had but far from the best for sure. Proceed with caution if you want to take him.
I respect Professor ONeil as a person however, do not take this class if you are not prepared to be overwhelmed with work. There is a paper due nearly every week along with discussions and weekly quizzes. There is also a final paper and a final exam. His descriptions are lengthy and extremely confusing to read and interpret.
If I can go back in time and tell myself to not take this course I would have. His test are close to impossible and he's the hardest man to please in the world with discussions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH O'NEIL I'm telling you you will thank me
well intentioned, but acts as if his class is the one aspect in a college student's life.I truly enjoy the readings/articles,but assigns TOO MUCH on a weekly basis. The content is interesting, but he takes the fun out of the class by binge-writing an essay of instructions for every week. Can do everyone a favor by cutting back on the workload,
HORRIBLE! He acts as if you're in a graduate level writing class and nothing you ever do will be enough for him. He will find something wrong with it. He's by far the worst professor I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
worse professor ever!!
Prof. O'Neil usually gives about 5-6 assignments per week minimum, including quizzes. Ridiculous requirements and mandates for each assignment & instructions r unnecessarily long/confusing. He's not understanding, will give you zeros if he doesn't like your writing topic, and make you redo the work. Not worth taking
Highly Recommend staying away at all costs!! Horrible grader even when you do exactly what he wants. He doesn't read all the material he is assigning. I think he is a new instructor that is homework heavy trying to prove something and inflating his ego. That happens with new, ego ridden instructors. Wait until the instructor grows up to take!
I didn't and never did enjoy this professor. Too much information that was never useful. Bout 200$ textbook and never used it (everything was online) if the class was in person it was 3 hours long and always dreded it. Never could understand him.Nice guy and all, expects too much from college kids.Expects us to be professionals when we are in school
Although the class is a 4000-level class which means it's mainly seniors and juniors, it's very information-heavy and the assignments take a lot of time, especially regarding discussion posts or tests.
Dr O'Neil is a VERY harsh grader, but he gives you opportunities to redo papers, but is a lot of work when you already did so much for the paper. If you are interested in research, he teaches and grades like a graduate research class, so maybe consider taking him. If you are taking it just for the pre-req, I'd find another professor.
I have never encountered a professor quite like this. Be prepared to prioritize this class above all else in your life, as he expects students to be constantly monitoring discussion posts to respond him, regardless of if you have any type of outside life. Instructions are lengthy and incredibly hard to decipher. Do not recommend whatsoever.
This class was very heavy. The work load was extremely overwhelming and time consuming. No less than 6 research papers a week and discussions that were pretty much mini papers as well. His instructions were insanely wordy and indecipherable. If you don't want to spend all your time writing paper after paper, I would not recommend this class.
I took this class as a prereq but this guy acts like I'm going to research as a career.I haven't learned anything because he doesn't give clear instructions, often with incomplete sentences and will contradict himself within the same paragraph.I don't have time for anything because he assigns too much but doesn't grade it till a month later. BEWARE
Although his teaching style isn't always perfectly aligned with my preferences, I still think Professor O'Neil is a good professor. However, I feel he often over-explains things, which leads to lengthy instructions, but perhaps I might just be struggling to balance this with my heavy work schedule outside of school.
I would pick a different professor. Extremely hard and overwhelming.
He's a great professor who truly prepares you for Grad School. If you want to succeed in his class be prepared for regular reading and discussion posts. You should also attend as much as possible in order to fully understand the material and do well in this course.
If you were to ask me whether I would take this professor again or army crawl for a mile, along a road covered in shards of glass. I would confidently pick the road every single time. He is an extremely tough grader and it will feel as if nothing will be good enough for him. Assignment instructions are very wordy and don't make sense. BE CAUTIOUS!!
I really liked Dr. O'Neil, i had him online i zoomed with him once he was very helpful. He responds to canvas emails in an adequate amount of time. Lots and LOTS of writing in this class you have to work hard to get the grade you want but his feedback was very helpful, he gives some grace period with submission, i would recommend him to anyone!
