Lectures are unclear and dull. More than half of my class were receiving lower than 70% on their exams. Would not recommend this teacher.
This class is only offered once a year and this is the only teacher. I would not take this class again. He is unclear on what to study for a quiz or a test. You have a quiz or exam every friday. Also he expects you to remember everything from chem 2A and makes you feel dumb if you don't. I even had to buy my chem 2A book again so I could review.

Dr. Orton is a very good teacher. When ever I need help he takes time out of his day to help me understand. He expects a lot out of us and drives us to study and learn.
Good professor, helpful and tries to keep his teaching techniques up to date, trying new things. Somewhat hard; the difficulty of the class picks up rather sharply about two thirds of the way through, which may catch the unprepared offguard. A bit stricter than most but a talented teacher overall.
He is not a good teacher. He is always confused and make you confused too. If I had to take chem again, I would not take him instead prefer to drive to sacramento.
Easy, Easy, Easy, Easy A+

He is a great teacher. He is very friendly and a really nice guy. You just have to stay motivated.
Grades very unfairly. Tests are hard and he doesn't change them. If you have old test you'll get an A; if not you'll get a C. Up too you.
Class does get MUCH harder suddenly. Taking notes is easy since he has power point printouts, so you can listen with minimal writing. Overall a good teacher, but it is a hard class. Quizes every Friday, and the Final can replace your old exam if you didn't do well, so that's pretty cool.

I thought Dr.Orton was a great teacher. Expects a lot and speaks with a complicated vocabulary. Keep up with the class cause it gets fast real quick. Know your stuff. Read notes and book! Tricky test. Some are very complicated. No Curve which can get tough. Very nice guy! Don't be intimidated!
Like any other subject...if you study, you will do fine. Not a hard teacher, but expects you do to your part. Loves what he does and willing to help out until you get it. I hate chemistry, but he made the semester fly by without a hitch.
Orton uses a nice mix of book and slides that keeps his students constantly needing to keep up with the reading in order to keep up in the class and with the homework. But other than that, some fun labs and lots of homework.
It's not worth taking his class. Doesn't know how to teach and make u feel dumb and he is totally unfair to people that are not genius. I would prefer taking chem on the moon rather then his class..find a different professor
People need to get a life. Dr. O is one of the best science teachers at Yuba College. No, you don't have to be a genius to understand or get a good grade. He does his part as long as you do yours. He is hard on his students so they will succeed. To those who graded him low, they must not have tried at all in his classes.
Good lectures, interesting labs but way too much homework and the labs were always longer than the allowed time which was really ridiculous if you had something right after class. shorter labs would have given more time for learning, he did make you feel stupid if you asked him questions though. tests are just like the online homework.
Dr. Orton is so far my favorite chemistry professor mostly because he is great at teaching the subject and is extremely helpful. I love the fact that he challenges students with his rigorous syllabus. If you want to succeed in a biology/biochemistry major or transfer to a 4-year university I would recommend everyone to take chemistry with Dr.O
Dr. Orton expects a lot from his scholars. Some people view this as a bad thing, because there's a lot of work involved. However, I view this as a good thing. Too many teachers resort to what is called "Grade Inflation", which gives students an easy grade. Dr. Orton actually makes you work for your grade. I believe he's a great teacher.
First of all I would just like to say Thank You, Dr. O for all the hard work you put in to ensuring your student's success. It is greatly appreciated. This series od classes is the Hardest I have ever taken, but also the most rewarding, I have learned more than I ever thought I would. Dr. O pushes you to the limits because he wants you to succeed.
Hard teacher yet knowledgeable, professional, and respectable. The class requires ALOT of time and dedication, but an exceptional grade is not unachievable. One can tell that he wants his students to succeed, but he makes them work their &#! off to get the grade they so desire.
I took Dr. Orton's class in fall 2008 and Spring 2009, and I have to say that he was one of the best professors at Yuba College. If you're a transfer student and think he's too hard or unfair, you have no idea of what's waiting outside. He actually teaches you the material. Thanks Dr. O!
This was a hard class. Dr. Orton made this class interesting and fun at times. He is very knowledgable about his subject and wants his students to be ingaged in learning. With a lot of hard work you can achieve your goals! Thank you Dr. O for your time, commitment and effort.
This is a serious class designed to make you work for your grade. If you work hard, you are proud of the grade you receive. He makes himself available as much as possible, and is also very likable and approachable. One of the best!
Mr.orton was the best teacher i have ever had. He defintily makes you work hard but its worth it. He teaches very well and is very approachable and helpful.
Smart guy, GREAT teacher, and a very hard class. You get what you give. Study hard and stay on top of things (reading, studying, homework) and you'll be okay. Test or a quiz every week. Homework online. Sometimes he can come off as condescending, but he's willing to help clarify or help with whatever you have questions on. Work hard and good luck!
Dr. Orton is by far the hardest prof Ive had to date and is probably the most passionate about his material too. Brilliant man! Ive never worked so hard for a B but I feel accomplished. He tells you in the beginning hes difficult, and wasnt lying. Do your part, and you will certainly reap the benefits and walk away knowing more then you think.
The hardest class you will take at a Junior College. Keep up with the online homework and you will stand a chance.
Difficult subject but Dr. Orton is an interesting and helpful teacher.
Dr. Orton expects a lot from students but he does it because he wants you to succeed. Very difficult subject but he really is a great and approachable instructor, I ended up with a D in the class but I feel like I didn't do my part, if I would have studied more and seeked more help I know I could have done better. I will be taking him again.
Dr. Orton - stern....but fair
Great professor. Difficult class but Dr Orton is willing to help with anything and he makes everything so clear.
I took Dr. O in Sping 2010, he is extremely hard and teaches way to advanced for an introductory course. Not a good class for people who are working full time or taking any other classes. I did not find him very helpful when I had questions. I'm currently taking this class again with a different teacher who is amazing. I do ot recommend Dr. O.
I am currently in Chemistry 1A with him and this teacher is EXTREMELY difficult. The mastering chem homework he assigns is death defying and literally takes 5 hours to complete. The tests are 8 pages long. Feels like you are sitting in a upper division chemistry course rather than Intro Chem. Only take him if you are serious and an avid student.
Honestly, this class is not that hard if you stay on top of your game!! There are not that many teachers out there that care for their students as much as he does. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He may seem intimidating at first but once you get to know him he is very helpful.
not a good professor...because they are lazy to grade hw they do mastering chem which is of no benefit..so complicated to work...if he cares so much then hand grade the assignments as well as grade them....tests are nothing close to the material he covers...tries to be tricky and is not...go to woodland or somewhere else...not worth it here
Dr. Orton knows what he is talking about; however, I ABSOLUTELY hate his mastering chemistry homework. I AM SO DISGUSTED by the homework that it makes me cry. He needs to take into consideration other challenging courses the students are taking. TESTS are extremely difficult.
Getting an A in chem 1B and already got an A in chem 1A Finals in a week. Class is easy if you stay on top of what he is teaching. If you slack off you will lose. Take the class if you ever want to use Chemistry again. Not an easy A.
Excellent professor who wants you to succeed. Easy to contact through online website and office hours. Lectures are insightful and interesting. Like any course, if you put the time into study, you will do well. If not, you won't. Orton's class is no different. Enjoyed the class and will be taking another Chemistry course with him next semester.
Not worth your time. Professor seems more interested in making the course the hardest class you will ever take rather than wanting you to succeed. Advise going to another school unless Chemistry is your major. Your life will not be easy if you take him.
Honestly, coming into the class, I was scared stiff because of all the stories I heard. He is really not that hard. Just keep up with the material and you will do great. Orton is really helpful if you have any questions, and will try to make sure you know the material well.
Overwhelming class at first, but once you get to know Dr. O teaching styles it starts to become less overwhelming and more enjoyable. VERY helpful teacher! Bends over backwards for his students. For example, i missed a day of class and he recorded his lecture for me and posted it online. I would suggest going to the tutoring sessions, very helpful.
To be successful in this class you need to put in the study time and I reccommend forming study groups in the beginning and attending tutor sessions.DONT BE LAZY. Dr. Orton can be tough but is always willing to help and was good about answering questions in class. He does a good job of relating the material to things you can actually understand.
Like many agreed, he is hard. Knowing the bare minimum would not help your get through the class. He's huge on cumulative understanding. He's a great prof however. Always willing to help. Only prof whom I ever felt bad for myself when I did bad on an exam cux I feel like he did so much to help his students.
Dr. Orton will not hold your hand in his courses. However, a lot of the flak he gets is undeserved. He is very helpful when you reach out to him and though the exams are tough, they are fair most of time. I learned a lot from Dr. Orton and so will anyone else if they give some effort.
This guy is badass Really tries to help the students but sometimes he can't go fast as his brain thinks and confuses the student and himself Dr. O. You the man and can you make the tests a little easier It is a communuty college exam not a phd exam
This class is a walk through a meadow Professor I beg you to make the class a little bit more challenging please I come from sacramento because I heard this class was hard but it is easier than chem 2A Please professor can you find it in your heart to give us test from universities so we can study an actually learn something
If you're heading to the health profession, don't expect this class to help get you there. It will hurt your GPA, and for lame reasons like not writing your lab partner's last name on labs. Not worth all the stress.
Good professor, exam questions not so easy to predict but not difficult just long. If you know how to problem solve you'll do fine. Helpful in setting up the labs and will quickly respond to questions via the blackboard email. Never bothered to read textbook in 1 or 18 series, lecture notes are sufficient (make sure to attend class) to get an A.
It was very hard at first. But I stuck w it and this turned out to be the funnest classes I have taken at Yuba College. DO your homework!! Get a tutor!! I would def take this class again. Dr. Orton was very inspiring! And he loves what he does, which makes the class a wonderful and fun environment to be in. I was 31 points away from an A!
The tests are the SAME layout all throughout the semester. Do your homework, form study groups and get a tutor and you will pass.
The final boss of Yuba College.
A lot of work
Dr.O is a really sweet guy but his class is tough. To pass this class you need to put absolutely all your efforts. I can say that simply not doing the homework, you will fail. The online homework is a great help for test and quizzes and the test are a lot of points. He failed chemistry too (twice) so he understands and he wants to help.
Hardest class he's claims I'll ever take which is probably true. Worked my butt off and studied a lot.
Despite all of the harsh comments present on this site, Dr. Orton is actually a really great professor. He goes in-depth in class discussions and rarely ever goes off tangent. I must admit that his tests were anything but easy, but you should be fine if you put in an ample amount of study time in your schedule. I'm actually excited for the 1B! :-)
Hardest class that I've taken so far. Learn from him if you want to learn chemistry. I got B's for both 1A and 1B but looking back I could have gotten an A if I had committed more time. How to get an A: practice, practice, practice. Great professor overall.
Chemistry overall is a hard subject; there's so much you need to know. Orton knows what he is talking about all the time. If you do well with orton, you can do awesome anywhere. Personally, I don't believe her deserves to be at a community college. He needs to be a professor at a great university. But he's there because he wants to help you all out
skip class and you wont pass, you need to do homework and always review the quizzes cause they will prepare you for the test; failed on my first try, got a high B on my second
Hard Class, he doesn't curve any tests. Dont take it with him. Waste of your time and money.
If you skip class, unless you have a one-on-one tutor, you won't understand the material as well. You have to ask for help, and he suggests meeting with the tutor. If you do bad on exams you can bring up your score on the final exam! WOULD TAKE AGAIN
Whats important about Orton is he knows the material well and if you pass his class then you will succeed in further chem classes. That being said he overcomplicates his labs and homework to the point where it's too frustrating to focus on really learning the basic material. I retook chem at CSUS and while it's just as dense, I'm more comfortable
His tests are hard to the point where even if you understand everything, you will not pass the tests. The averages on exams are D's. The final is a repeat of the past exams. He is a very good teacher, and he knows how to teach well, but his tests and homework make the class hard to pass. The hw is online, and txtbook is rarely used.
His class is so difficult to the point where even if you study two hours everyday, you'll still get a D or F. He teaches well, but his exams and quizzes are difficult. It's like they aren't even made for community college students or undergraduate students. Also he doesn't curve. Most exams have averages of 50% or lower, and still no curve.
Dr. Orton is an very intelligent. He cares about his students and grades everything promptly. Reading the book was required, and it helps if you read before lecture. He gave several quizzes and pushes your understanding on tests, which are challenging. There are 2 parts to the final. Part 1 was okay, but part 2 was difficult. Study extremely hard.
I am in awe of the effort I put towards this class. I've never worked harder. I went to two different tutors and would pretty much go to tutoring for 4 hours a week and I still struggled. He's like a dad by how he really will push you because he wants to see you succeed. Best chem teacher out of them all and you will succeed in the future bc of him
If you can't devote more than two hours of studying and homework a day, you won't pass. The people who found this class impossible likely thought attending lecture was enough to allow them to pass quizzes and tests. The class is admittedly difficult, but your worst exam scores are replaced by your grade on the final, which is a generous curve.
if you arent a pre-med or chem major go to woodland and save yourself the headache by paying for the gas
Okay this dude is no joke your gunna know your chemistry I would advise you get a syllabus and make yourself familiar with the concepts the critique I have is that his final period is to intense so try to get the week off if you work and prepp early cuz he may care that you have other classes but he's not gunna make it easier on you at all study!!
It is not an easy class, but it is doable. I felt that he should change his grading system a bit. (Either curve each test, curve final grade, or make study guides that are similar to the exam) Although he is a nice guy the tests are very challenging; for a better grade I recommend you go to Woodland.
Organic Chemistry is not english class and you should be prepared to put in the hours outside of class if you want a good grade. That being said, Professor Orton made the whole experience very enjoyable. He is very humorous (he puts cartoons and memes on the front of the exams) and you would be lucky to have him as a teacher.
This class is literally the hardest class you will ever take in your life. I have never struggled this hard in a class to get the grade I want. Literally you can spend 40+ hours studying a week and the exam will be something totally different. The homework will takes hours, the labs are horribly worded, please get previous exams if you wanna pass.
Although a very tough class, Orton was a nice person who does care about his students. He will not give you a grade for free. I had to work for my grade but it was manageable even with a full course load. Great professor, difficult class.
I took his class last Fall. Exactly half the class failed and half the class passed. He wants you to understand time management is important and that chem is hard but the thing is WE ALREADY KNOW THAT, it practically doesn't matter if you understand the concepts, you'll probably fail. He's nice and all but trust me you'll feel terrible in the end.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I have never been more miserable in my life than taking this course. I cry nearly weekly and I've called the suicide hotline twice. Hes a sincerely nice guy but he doesn't care that you have responsibilities other than his class. Save yourself and GPA take CHEM literally *anywhere* else.
was one of the hardest class ever taken!!!!!
I took 4 chem classes with Dr O (tough but caring) These took the most dedication during my time at Yuba and UC Davis To succeed you really need to put in hours of work each week but if you do you will be so well prepared for future stem classes(worth it) Very hard. But very doable if you practice often, use tutors/study groups& go to office hours!
Easily the hardest class I've ever taken. The content itself wasn't hard. The amount of homework assigned is tough. The Quizzes/Tests time limits are short so you have to know how to do the problems relatively fast. If you read the text and understand the basics then you will be fine. This class will prepare you for harder classes down the road.
Dr. Orton's exams might be one of the toughest ones you might have to take, but it is definitely worth while. In his class there is NO easy A, it will teach you how to critically think and become a better student. After taking his course other chemistry courses will be much easier. Important to go to office hours, tutoring and be dedicated.
Professor Orton is a decent guy but his class is the hardest class that I have ever taken. The amount of homework is insane. The time for exams and quizzes are way too short and too many questions for that short timeframe. Also, he likes to ask questions on exams and quizzes that we have never covered and practiced before.
Dr. Orton's Chemistry class is very difficult, but it is also very high quality. He covers everything thoroughly and is always ready to help during office hours. If you are willing to put in the work, you do not need to worry about passing the class. If you are serious about learning and preparing for transfer to university, take this class.
The impossible and the hardest class ever. I didn't learn anything the whole semester, so the college must think about student's future in education. The homework and exams were nothing related to lectures and no prep material at all. There was no tutor left to prepare for the final. I still am facing the consequences of registering with him.
I had so many problems with Mr. Orton, one of them being he accused me of cheating on an exam with no proof, and then held a grudge against after taking this problem to the Dean. No tutors for this course and bragged about 80% of the class failing. No professor should be proud of that, its just sad. Love yourself and take Chem at Woodland college.
Dr. Orton was one of the best professors I've ever had at Yuba College. Dr. O actually cares for his students and wants them to succeed in whatever field they wish to pursue, whether that is med school, engineering, or any STEM career. His test and quizzes are very difficult, however they prepare you so much.
I took professor Orton for four semesters and got one A and three Bs. I can say without a doubt that many of these reviews are simply frustrated people either lying or misunderstanding their situation. Dr. Orton is definitely difficult, but Chemistry is not an easy subject. If you truly care and try he will help you regardless of who you are.
I don't even know where to start about this guy and his class. Chemistry is already a 5 unit and overwhelming class. But trust when I say he will make you regret taking his class. He is an extremely tough grader with no sympathy. He replied to my email an entire 2 days after the work already started and never even showed to zoom. Save your soul.
If you read this just don't do it, go to woodland or change schools I took all of his chem classes by the end of it I was broken if your trying to get into a degree and not a fight for your very survival don't do it just take the semester off and apply to a different community college take your chem there pay the gas.. Beware of this chem progrom
Worst professor at Yuba College. If you care about your GPA/sanity, I recommend taking organic chemistry anywhere else. Learned nothing in his class, and he gave way too much homework. Exams were insane, and he told the class he pulls questions from Stanford/Harvard O-Chem exams. Only one person received an A, a few Bs/Cs, and the rest failed.
Professor grades really hard and the class is impossible to pass. I BEG YOU TO TAKE THIS CLASS AT WOODLAND.
I would NOOOOOTTT recommend him. He is very difficult and test-heavy.
Do not take this class at yuba college with this professor it is impossible to pass.
Dr. Orton's mastery of chemistry, combined with a genuine dedication to student success, makes his classes engaging and informative. He is always available for help and provides clear and organized materials. His passion for teaching has significantly enriched my academic journey. He views us as humans and not just a number. Take his class!
If you take Dr. Orton's classes expecting to be handed an easy A without any effort you will be mistaken. If you actually put the time and effort in to learn the material you will succeed! Dr. O is very generous and provides many opportunities for his students to succeed. So if you just want to waste your time learning nothing then go to Woodland!
Extremely challenging class, Dr. Orton cares deeply about chemistry and about educating his students. I can confidently say this course will prepare you for any chemistry you may take in the future. If you are ready for a challenge that will benefit you I recommend this course heavily!
Difficult class, and a tough grader. 4 exams throughout the semester and a final that is 4 exams with 2 taken at a time. Requires all lectures to be watched from beginning to end or you lose points. A lot of information so be prepared to study. You must stay involved as the material builds off itself. If you get behind you will struggle.
Lots of work in this class. Have to work to earn your grade. Does not email back as quick as others. Online course, with about 5 assignments weekly. We used an online lab platform and chapter problems on another. I went through about 5 lab notebooks as there was a lot of writing and exams. 4 exams, weekly quiz, and 4 part final
Dr. O is a fantastic teacher. As someone wanting to be a chemistry teacher myself, I am inspired by his love for the subject matter and I am definitely taking notes. Do NOT expect an easy experience, but no matter the grade, I promise you will come out a better student. Put in the work, show up, and you will not be disappointed.
CHEM 18A/18B at Yuba are 10 units but often only transfer as ochem BRIEF LECTURE(4 units) at Sac State. not full O-chem I & II. Grad schools may not accept it. dont take him if u didn't take him for genchem 1 and 2, doesnt review, and class is very hard. Check with your transfer school first or you might waste a year.
I have taken all of general chemistry and organic chemistry (A's & B's) with Dr. O and throughout it all he has been nothing but supportive, as he genuinely wants you to succeed. The classes are difficult and take a lot of dedication, so be prepared to put in the time and effort, but if you really care then this is the professor you want to have.
so hard. take it at woodland
save yourself, take this class somewhere else.
Dr. O cares about his students and will prep you well for a career in STEM! However, he's not an easy teacher. You'll need to put in the hours, go to tutoring, and really absorb the material to receive a decent grade. It is better to have him multiple semesters in a row, and make sure you are retaining the information in order to do well.
Dr. O was an amazing professor! Yes, the other reviews are correct about how hard this class is, but you will learn a tremendous amount in this class. This was the hardest class I've taken as a STEM major so far, but if you read the textbook, get tutoring, and actually apply yourself, you'll be alright. Dr. O always is willing to answer Q's too.
Chem 1A with Dr. O is a very hard class and very test heavy. However, you can tell he really likes the subject and is willing to answer any questions you might have you just have to be willing to reach out to him. He doesn't do study guides for exams which means you really just have to study everything that you guys went over. Hard class but doable
Gives a lot of work, and teaches very well. May be Stockholm syndrome, but I've learned so much that the hard work is worth it. Have fun and DO THE WORK. Do not get behind no matter what; it is a death sentence especially if you have other classes. C in Chem 1A, B in Chem 1B. Nobody in my class got an A. Take this class to learn, not get good grade
