Knows his stuff and keeps it REAL WORLD.
Rushes through explanations of video editing. Don't ask questions otherwise he will most likely speak in a condescending manner.
Editing is really detailed oriented and students who don't pay attention have problems with him. I took this class and now I'm working thanks to Pina. That's the real proof!
I took this class and several others from Pina. At first I thought it was going to be easy but it really takes a lot of effort. You really have to follow him during lectures or its easy to fall behind. Like anyone else he has his good days and bad days. Overall, he is an excellent teacher and I'm grateful for what I learned.
When I took this course, I had no video making experience at all and I had no intention of making a career of it. Mr. Pina's passion for his field, not only made me choose video making as a field but to teach video as well. I highly recommend this course and Mr. Pina to anyone with no video experience.
Class was very helpful and prepared for my internship with Tavis Smiley.
Very fun course very time consuming, put in the effort and time in the LAB you will get that grade you deserve.
Puts a lot of effort into the content of the course but does not always vibe well in class with students. Pina is often condescending towards students who ask questions and also says "just google it" a lot instead of actually showing students. Thank god I'm done with his class!
Not an easy class if you don't follow the readings. Pina clearly puts a lot of effort and time into research and design of course materials. He shows a lot of patience with students who continually ask the same questions. He only ever said "just google it" to maintain flow of his lectures out of respect for students who actually did the reading.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Definitely a lot of work but well worth the effort. Now I can produce, direct, shoot and edit! I came in knowing nothing and now I am starting my own video production company. Thanks Mr. Pina!!!
The best writing course to take if you are serious about getting A's in your other classes! I wrote at about high school level when I started and now write killer academic papers in APA. Pina is an amazing instructor.
At first this class was overwhelming and I didn't like Mr. Pina. Then when I saw the amount of work he put into grading my essays and explaining how to improve my writing it clicked. Now I have to say he is the best and most engaged professor I've ever had at CSUEB. This class was the bomb!
Pina is to the point and great at what he does. His staff is awesome and very helpful. You will learn a lot, but be warned, it is very time consuming. This is not a class to take when you have a lot on your plate or no time do film and edit. Once you get a hang of everything it is really fun. I learned a lot and gained great skills!
It was refreshing for me to see a professor who put so much time and effort into the teaching and grading process. I really enjoyed the class, he gives a lot of constructive and detailed feedback.
Not many teachers past high school give you as much feedback as Professor Pina does. My writing has improved significantly. He takes the time which is hard to say for a lot of professors these days, and it is greatly needed! Take this class, get to know Pina so you can use him for editing resources later and for other classes! I plan to.
Just transferred and I am so glad I took Professor Pina's Writing & Design class as my first upper division course! It has set my standards high given that he teaches you all you should know about the qualities of writing. He invests a great amount of time going through your assignments/essays and he really wants to see you improve & succeed!
He's the man. If it was possible to put a 50 for helpfulness, I feel like most of his students would. Nobody at the university puts more time and effort into their job than Pina does. THE best on campus, hands down.
Mr. Pina is a very cool teacher as long as you do what you're supposed to do. Be on time and make it to class. Truth be told, it was tough at the beginning, but he intented it to be so. Hang in there, and you will be fine.
Easily one of my favorite teachers at Eastbay! The class is very intimidating at first (a lot of writing) but, if you apply yourself and DO THE WORK - he see's that you're trying and is ALWAYS willing to help. He is a HUGE stickler for proper APA formatting and having a strong thesis. TAKE HIM! Your writing will improve and you won't regret it
While Professor Pina makes you work hard, it is worth it! I took this class during my first quarter at CSUEB. Although my skills were respectable for business writing, it lacked the required structure necessary for academia; I had to learn how to reprogram my brain and Professor Pina helped me with this enormous task. I am grateful for the atten
Whoever said he was condescending is right. Pina isn't so much there to actually teach you than observe you. A student asked for a video editing software tutorial and he told us to find one on YouTube. His video workshop class is literally just having students record on-campus sports events. Don't expect any professional help from him.
Found him very helpful with my media projects. He's a master editor and gives lots of tricks and shortcuts for making your final cut look great. I also learned some simple but effective lighting tricks from him. Overall I think he's a very good instructor and I'd take him again.
The most painful class I've ever taken. Coursework and readings are very insightful but the workload will send you to your grave. Beware.
Do not take this class if you think you can get by without reading the long weekly articles. This class isn't "hard" if you do your reading before each class and do all your essays. He gives great feedback before your next essay, lets you correct them, but comes off as a jerk only to those who slack off. The workload can be overwhelming at times.
Pina can be very rude, like I understand some people may not have the best of work, but he takes it to another level sometimes. He has also gotten into pointless arguments with students when he was wrong at times. I do not like going to him for help bc of how he is in class sometimes with other students.
Pina is easily one of the best instructors at CSUEB. If there were more like him, they'd be a better school. That said, Pina isn't easy. He is 100% there for you and super helpful but only if you are also putting in the effort. It's a two way street - don't expect him to be nice if you skip class and miss assignments.
Professor Pena is bluntly honest, holds you accountable, and keeps it real, he really wants his students to succeed!
Great professor. Knows his stuff when it comes to radio, TV and Internet broadcasts. Knows Adobe Software real well, I learned a lot about editing, sound levels, producing and engineering. He's also insightful as to the assignments, you get a mix of Everything, not just boring interviews.
This class was one of the most fun communications classes I took (and it started at 8AM, so you know that says a lot!) As long as you come to class prepared and ready to participate, you'll do fine. I also didn't find this to be an issue because the material covered was really interesting to me. He's a fun guy in general! Take this class with him!
Pina is awesome! Ask for help and he'll be there. Lectures are clear and relative, using many of the things I learned in his classes in my current job.
Don't take Prof Pina if you want to "slide by" - he wants to teach and you have to want to learn. But you will learn, at the end of the course you'll be better than when you came in. He has a unique sense of humor and tries hard to make the material enjoyable, just take it all with a grin. Get into the work, do it on time and you'll do well.
I gained so much real-world knowledge from Pina and will continue to maintain my relationship with him in the future. He is a great person to guide you through the multimedia communications industry, with his own extensive expertise! Definitely take a class with him if you get the chance!
Professor Pina is really one of those professors that cares about his students and their success after college. He was very knowledgable in his field and has a lot of experience with media and radio broadcasting, so get ready to learn a ton of new skills. Lots of writing and research, but you will be a much better writer by the end of his class.
Do not take him if you don't have to. Long and dry readings assigned every class. You are docked 1/3 of a grade for every class missed. You are not allowed to sign in if youre 15 mins late. His grading comments are harsh, and make you feel small. The class consists of 3 papers, a group presentation, an individual presentation, and a final paper.
Take him if you can. It's true whiners who want to skip class or think it's putting them out to show up to class on time WON'T DO WELL, what did you expect?... you're a college student. The syllabus is clear & readings resonate with what's going in the world. Great lectures & lively discussions. Most importantly, he makes you a better writer.
Amazing syllabus you can count on with tons of resources I will use forever to continue to improve my writing. Honestly have never had a professor care this much and give as much as he does to critique writing assignments. He encourages discussion in class that allows us to share our experiences and relate them back to reading assignments.
Professor Pina really wants his students to do well. He gives great feedback with the papers, try not to miss his class. He is strict about attendance, but its for a good reason. He really helps with APA formatting, your writing will improve. Only paragraphs are due for the papers, so you never have to worry about turning in an entire paper at once
Only professor I have ever had that follows their syllabus the entire class. The syllabus has endless links to help you throughout the class and no professor I have had has done that. There is a lot of reading but very interesting. With the amount of feedback, you will leave the class a better writer than when you entered.
I really loved having Pina as my professor. He was very helpful and understanding.
The WORKSHOP method he uses for group writing and reviewing student writing examples is TERRIFIC! We learn together from each other in a process guideded by Pina that really works. His passion and caring is rare encouraging our entire class to succeed. Thanks Pina!
Pina is the only teacher I have enjoyed so far. I have taken him twice and both classes were great. This last quarter, class was at 8am and I had to wake up at 6am to get there because I commute. I never once felt tired during his class. He keeps you engaged, he sticks to his syllabus, and he is very fair. Just make sure you go to class.
Pina is an intelligent loving teacher that challenges you to think critically about the world. He sticks to his syllabus, and he provides you all the resources to be a successful writer. He puts impeccable effort in your feedback, and he'll help you improve as a writer, and student. His experience, knowledge, and love is valuable to CSUEB.
Kevin Pina is one of the most genuine, respectful, and down-to-earth instructors at CSUEB. You can tell he genuinely cares about the well-being of his students. The work is rigorous, but you'll learn a lot. Pina is also very flexible with the work - he understands that most of us juggle a full time job with 12+ units. He deserves a raise.
I actually got a professor in this department who taught me something relevant to my academic career at CSUEB. Clear and immovable syllabus, good reading material and great feedback. All I ever wanted to feel my money is well spent at CSUEB and this degree might actually mean something in the future.
If you are having trouble writing, this professor will polish you up. Pina is great, very helpful during class and office hours. Go to class, read the material, do the homework and don't hesitate to ask question, you will be fine.
Great professir. Highly recommend taking Professor Pina. He follows the syllabus 100% and gives great feedback with the writing we do in class. Very inspriational and considerate of all the students. Be ready for honest opinion from him when grading your papers, but in the end it helps.
Professor Pina is an amazing professor! You seriously will learn in his class if you show up and actually pay attention to his gradings. He is a tough grader and you are required to do a lot of reading but end of the day you will walk out of the course with excellent writing skills! He truly cares for his students and their education!
Professor Pina's writing and design class was awesome! Pina teaches you the proper way to write in the APA format, and it's a tool that definitely will need when writing essays in the future! Their was quite a bit of reading but the readings you do you use for sources in your essays. I felt like I grew a ton as a writer, professor genuinely cares.
One of the best in giving lectures, harsh but understanding and fair towards your grade, doesn't hesitate to give you his honest opinion, but balances this with giving you the tools to become a better writer, also gives extra credit! Focus on your work, don't miss class, and listen to his lectures they're very vital to surviving!
Kevin Pina is a professor that I would recommend to any comm student. His readings in class are eye opening and your writing skills will improve. He cares about his students learning, and has a lot of knowledge to offer. His class is heavy with reading assignments, but doing your homework only makes writing the papers that much easier.
I took his Law & Ethics class when he first began teaching this subject, so it was a bit shaky & easy to pass because we were ALL learning it together. Aside from that, Prof Pina is a wonderful person & professor. He is open to students' inputs, is understanding of others, & is goal oriented. He values knowledge and resources. You'll learn a lot!
Professor Pina has a very fun class he does make you work hard to be better but he does it in a way that makes you want to do the work!
Absolutely loved this class! I would take it again if I could. If you care about this class, you'll learn writing skills and media knowledge that will carry into your professional life. Yes, there's lots of reading, but they are there to guide you with writing your essays. Take his advice, feedback corrections & resources to succeed.
Professor Pina is a great teacher. He is a tough grader but it is because he cares that his students do well. He is very upfront and honest and he will always tell you when you are not doing something right. He is not an easy teacher. With that being said don't be afraid to take his classes. They are definitely worth it.
One of the best professors here at CSUEB. The writing skills you hone in his class are ESSENTIAL to your academic writing both in and out of the major. Enriching class discussions and assigned readings. He always centers dialogue back to relevant topics concerning power structures and current events. Excellent class. (He even DJs occasionally too).
Kevin Pina is a teacher worth having from the beginning of the quarter until the end. The class gets more manageable if you stay ahead with the readings. He is a fair grader and gives essential feedback on assignments.
Prof. Pina knows his stuff and will impart his knowledge on you; in a good way without being pretentious. Make sure to read the articles/readings he provides (all are interesting/relevant so that helps) because it's discussion-heavy and participation counts.
This professor is seriously the best professor I've ever had. He really wants to help his students . I haven't even gotten a grade yet, but I know I will do well knowing I have him as a teacher. I'm sad that Writing and Design is not going to be available for next semester at CSUEB, but I'm glad I got to take him for my requirements for COMM. AC
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I took him a few quarters ago and is one of the best professors here. He takes his job seriously and wants you to perfect as a student. I am always able to email him and ask him for help because I know he will help me. Pina the real homie
Pina is a great professor to take if you actually want to learn. Be prepared to do a lot of reading. BUT don't be intimidated, he's one of the nicest professors at East Bay. Best writing class I have ever taken. You work on the paper all quarter, and he will challenge you to improve your writing during every single class. It's worth it, though.
Pina is hands down the best professor Ive had in my four years of college. He cares so much about every one of his students and really takes the time to get to know everyone. He also is very passionate about journalism, you can tell in the way he teaches. so glad I had the chance to take his classes. You will not regret taking any of his classes!
If you do the work, you're solid. Pina is an interesting professor, though most of his work is through your writing, Pina will give you room to grow with your writing. Come to class with a good attitude and ready to learn and you won't fail. Also he sometimes leaves links open for a long time so that gives you time to submit stuff late.
Pina is AMAZING! I am beyond grateful that I was able to take a few of his courses before completing my college career at East Bay. Not only is he a great teacher who goes above and beyond to make sure his students are up to par with what is required of the course by the end of the semester but he is also caring and GENUINELY wants you to succeed!
Mr. P is a honest Professor and will keep it real with you. The radio class really prepares you for a job on the AIR.
Pina, I a great teacher. You learn by doing and he shows you how to it. You gotta jump in and not hesitate. Classes are fun and productive. I recommend this radio class, its super fun.
Gives the readings in the syllabus which is helpful with cost of the class. Always gave constructive feedback about our projects and brings in speakers from the field to be able to help workshop ideas about our documentaries! He makes you really nail down your idea and how you want it but it helps in the end because you come out with a great video.
Great professor to have! I always appreciated his feedback an he really wants his students to succeed in class and afterwards!
Pina is one of the greatest teachers CSU East Bay has at its disposal. While some students may find his teaching methods tough and unfiltered, the truth of the matter is that Pina is wholeheartedly preparing you for the reality of life after college. Take a moment to shut your mouth and listen, and you will learn plenty.
I wouldnt be where I am in life if it wasnt for him. A fantastic teacher, a great mentor. Pina truly pushes you to so your best and give it your all. Trust me, the work ethic I learned under Pinas guidance is something I carried into the work environment and it is highly respected by my coworkers and supervisors.
Great teacher! Class isn't too overwhelming with homework. Would definitely recommend this class if you are interested in journalism.
Pinas class is interesting, learned about National Security, whistle blowers, journalist and their sources. Pretty cool straight forward class, do the reading and you will do great. No need to buy book, and have essays for finals which we work in class. Wish he wasnt big on attendance, had a newborn and missed a few classes.
Super interesting and informative class. Pina assigned weekly readings and reading notes and two essays throughout the semester. Challenging class but not too tough, it's easier if you do the work. You can't pass if you don't do the reading! We do the essays in class and he gives lots of good feedback! There's no finals or books we have to buy.
Pina offers a great deal of first hand experience from his career as a journalist. You will definitely learn a lot from his lectures. His class is one of those where you have to put effort, so long as you you put effort he will NOT let you fail. Let me say this again, you will have to put in WORK.
Kevin Pina is a great instructor who will teach you great skills, making you relearn how to write an essay & gives great techniques making long readings easier+faster. His syllabus & class is well organized, he gives great feedback for essays (and will let you work on it during class). Can sometimes step on your toes, but he has good intentions.
Professor Pina is great!! I took him for COMM318 and COMM328 within the same semester and I passed with A for both classes. He cares about his students and accomedates so much for them. He values progress and wants to see his students improve their writing. For students who want to go into Journalism they will take away a lot!
He assigns 3 stories, 1 feature story, & Multimedia Portfolio. He goes through how to properly write a article with the first story. If you get published in The Pioneer, keep proof so he can give you extra credit and clear an absence at the end of the semester. He makes jokes a lot and plays music while students work on articles in class.
Pina has great lecture! The reading you do for homework will be used for the two essays you do in class. You usually find five words and three quotes that relate to three words for the homework. Essays are done in class as workshops which is helpful so you can get help from him. He also has amazing stories about him being a journalist.
Mr. P is a good dude. A good teacher but honesty the guy wants students to see what's really going on in the world. Come to class and tun in the work for a fair grading scale. Don't come to class if you wanna fail. Compared to other teachers, Mr. P is the only professor I have meet that is 90% awake to the illusions of the world.
I had Pina for Reporting & Writing 1 which was actually not that bad. Get ready for a lot of writing but Pina gives you a decent amount of time to do that work. He teaches you how to write a new story, preparing for interviews, finding sources, and more. If your story gets published in The Pioneer, he gives you extra credit and 1 day off!
Pina is a great professor but Journalism Law and Ethics was honestly my least favorite class. Get ready for a lot of reading and homework... I mean A LOT. There are 2 essays and reading assignments to do. If you want to pass, show up to class, read, do the homework, and pay attention. I struggled in this class so much. Never again...
I took Pina's COMM318 Law and Ethics class. I'm grateful for the attention he gave us to become better academic writers in APA. I know this will help me get better grades in my other classes and passing the WST. It al gave me confidence I can do graduate level research and writing. Now I've decided to go for my Master's in Journalism. Thanks Pina!
Pina has been one of the most impactful teachers throughout my educational career. He is truly trying to educate students to make a difference in this world. He is funny, smart and extremely helpful. I have never felt so much support from a teacher before. The information he taught us was clear to understand and interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Kevin Pina is an inspirational professor who assists to teach real world skills in both written classes (a good breakdown on writing) as well as a good introduction to tech, radio and television casting. Pina genuinely wants you to succeed and goes the extra mile to help his students towards that end.
This is a professor who considers outreach essential. Meaning, the class communicates within itself and regularly with Professor Pina in order to cultivate group learning and quality assurance. He uses this tactic in all classes. Be prepared to learn about teamwork and be open minded to suggestion. His advice and critique allows healthy learning.
Very approachable in class, very knowledgeable in the field of journalism, very opinionated, and I look forward to working with him again.
Easy going professor that requires participation during class. Participation + Effort a good portfolio at the end of the semester.
Mr. Pina is a great teacher and leader. If you want to take a class at CSUEB that you can apply to your future goals of becoming a journalist, then this is the teacher you want. Simple as that, take him and you will learn what you need to move forward in jurnalism.
Be ready to read! But the text you do read is really interesting to discuss in class and it will help you with the papers you have to write. Pina is awesome about helping his students with their writing especially in APA format. He gives you time to get your work done and provides good feedback if you are open to having him review your writing.
Professor Pina strives to push his students to reach their full potential. He gives interesting lectures, assigns good readings, and makes his self accessible for feedback and help. You will definitely leave this class as a better writer, and a master of APA format!
Work is spread evenly throughout the semester. Plenty of time in class to get work done. Flexible with story topics. Do your research. Stay on top of interviews and don't forget to take pictures. Take the feedback! This class is great if you want more content for your ePortfolio or resume. All stories have a chance to be published in the Pioneer.
One of the best teachers out there. He might make you work a lil but wow you sre goung to learn. Def recommend his pop culture
Really great professor, and really treats students like he cares about them.
For the last 2 years at CSUEB, not once have I had a professor as real and get down into the actual grunt work to show you how it's suppose to be done except for PINA. I have learned an exceptional amount from Professor Pina. And I carry the education out of the classroom and apply it more than any other of my classes that I have taken.
Ive had Pina both in writing and in radio. Pina is a well organized professor. With a informational syllabus that Pina sticks with throughout the semester. During the covid-19 switch Pina had a solid syllabus that stood strong throughout the switch up. Very understandable and will work with you. Just do your portion as a student effort wise.
Pina is probably the most organized professor Ive had at East Bay thus far. You can find everything ok the syllabus, the links take you to the readings (less digging for me). He brings up interesting stuff. Hes super good about feedback, and wants his students to write well. He is more than happy to help out.
A true crucible of writing and communication ability. I feel more confident in my essay writing skills due to Prof. Pina's consistent efforts to help his students each step of the way. He is very caring and detail-oriented, highly recommended professor.
Great professor and very organized. Although there are a lot of assignments to keep track of, he is very helpful and answers all your questions. Would take a class of his again.
Professor Pina was outstanding. Coming from someone who did not like to write, his instruction has changed my mind, I enjoy writing. I will try and take every class that is offered for my degree that Prof. Pina is instructing. Might even change my concentration to take more of his classes.
Simply he is the best! very considerate, always there when you need to ask about something or need help with an assignment/structure... very organized the syllabus was super full but very organized. He teaches thoroughly and invests in every single minute of the class.
Kevin Pina has by far been the MOST organized professor I have taken, this far while attending East Bay. His class is filled with a lot of busy work so be ready to be on your computer a lot, however; he is an easy and fair grader. I actually look forward to taking this professor again in the near future for sure!.
Mr. Pina is a great teacher with expansive knowledge in his field. He always makes time to help his students and really cares about their well being. 10/10 take Mr. Pina with confidence and get ready for a great fun semester of learning.
Pina is one of my favorite professors. He takes the time to give you feedback and an A is possible because "it ain't nothing but work!" I really enjoyed his course because I felt challenged, yet supported. Highly recommend!
I wish I could have taken Pina in person rather than online, mainly because I can tell he would have been an amazing prof in the classroom. His online class was really difficult for me, not because of his teaching style but because of all the different portals used for assignments. This online class was not for the ADD kids, but he is amazing
As a transfer student, I was definitely intimated at first. Persuasion in Media was my first class taken at CSUEB and it was a great experience. He sets you up for success for not only his class but for the rest of your academic career, specifically on how to utilize APA format. Will be taking another class with Professor Pina whenever possible!
Pina is willing to work with each and every one of his students as long as you reach out to him in class/email. He is easy to relate with, cheerful, and highly intelligible, especially when it comes to writing and research. He is in fact the only professor I've written a review on, he is a hidden gem, please take him if you have the opportunity.
My writing confidence was poor at the beginning of the course, so poor I did not like to write. However, after taken Prof. Pina class my confidence is strong and I look forward to writing. I am yet improving on the mechanics. If you have the opportunity, take his course or any other course he is instructing.
I took professor Pina for Multimedia Reporting and Writing. Please stay on top of things when taking this class. That is my advice, also if you have not yet, please familiarize yourself with Adobe products. That will come to use especially in the final projects. Awesome Professor though, I will be taking him again for future classes.
I love professor Pina's way of teaching. He is very detailed oriented when it comes to writing essays in his class which I appreciate. I have learned how to properly cite in APA thanks to him. Many other students complain about the workload in his class but I would disagree, his class isn't as hard as other COMM classes I have taken.
Pina is one of my favorite professors in the COMM Department! He sets you up for success as a writer with APA formatting skills. He was also kind enough to write me letters of recommendation for graduate school. He keeps you up to date on current events, and is super knowledgeable about the course material.
Kevin is an awesome instructor and mentor. He has a ton of knowledge and is a respected professional in his field. I would recommend his courses and if possible volunteer to gain resume skills. He is a positive and kind instructor with a huge network.
Professor Pina gives really good feedback and is reachable. He provides writing workshops and makes sure your academic writing is on point and provides a good foundation. Also, a very interesting class discussion that makes you think. It is a fun class. As long as you do your work on time, you can pass with flying colors.
This man should not be teaching with the ego he has. His narcissistic personality seeped through into every single class session we had. It is very clear that he thinks his students are below him. The way he structures essays is unlike anything I've done in any other college course. I have a million things to say, but these are a few highlights.
Give the guy a break, Pina pushed both in person and online for 2/3 of the semester until he fell off a ladder and hurt himself during a live stream of a baseball game on campus Readings were heavy but he assigned groups for discussion making it easier to use in essays. Appreciate his knowledge and offering to help us to find work after graduation.
He has a lot of personal experience and stories to inform you as a student. This class in the tv studio helped me learn to video and edit a tv show. Not easy at first but I learned about how to produce video with a team. I am taking away information and experience that can only help my chances of getting a job after graduation.
Radio/Podcasting class with Pina this semester and have to say I love his style of teaching. Gives us info in his lectures to learn from his experience and the syllabus then lets us work on our own to apply it. He doesn't micromanage like other professors. You have to be mature and take care of your business to get the grade you think you deserve.
I learned a lot about the law and journalism from Pina and this class. My writing improved mostly because I had a professor who cared to take the time to show me a better way to organize my thoughts. Pina also gave several weekends on his own time to help students with their writing. Who else does that?
As a 1st GEN Latina student coming from a community college I found Prof. Pina very supportive and helpful. He was the only faculty in all my classes who was actually on campus and it made such a difference for me to see everyone and learn together. I didn't do well online so it meant a lot that he spent extra time with us after class.
I knew about the heavy work load and mandatory attendance going into Pina's class but I did not expect him to be so rude. His answers to my Q's were harsh, unusually negative, and with a lot of attitude. One time, after making only a few, small mistakes on a lengthy paper, he made very rude comments. Unbelievable. Do not take his classes.
By far the rudest professor I have ever had. The few times I emailed him with questions, I was met with the biggest attitude. His feedback on my final paper was that my writing skills "are not at a college level" and that I should consider taking some of his writing classes if I want to be successful, even though he gave me a B+ on my paper...0/10
Professor Pina assign a lot of articles to read, but once you get the hang of it, you will be able to finish the article within an hour. He do give extra credits which I think is a rather nice thing to do considering not many professors do that nowadays.
By far one of my favorite instructors at East Bay. My work schedule only allowed me to meet with him for help on the weekends and he literally spent hours working with me on my essay writing. Don't know if I could gave graduated without him and I'm truly grateful for the care and time this man gave me. Thanks Pina!
Prof Pina really cares about his students but doesn't suffer fools who blame their teachers for their own faulty work ethic, we all know the type. When he knows you're serious he's all the way there for you even post-graduation like when he helped me get a gig through his contacts. I still go to him for advice.
At first, he seemed really cool and I was excited to take his class. I was mistaken. He never actually told me what I did wrong on assignments when he docked points. The few times I followed up for feedback, he was rude, condescending, and unhelpful. Always made me feel like it was a major inconvenience to answer my questions. I do not recommend
Professor Pina is an amazing professor with a lot of passion for multimedia journalism - so if you share that same passion you should definitely take one of his courses. He remains accessible, even once you leave his courses and always has something to teach you!
I'm so happy to recommend him. I could not have graduated without his help. I read some of the negative comments and it seems like just one student who bears some kind of grudge against him. It doesn't sound like the prof. Pina I know at all. They should have better filters on thus site.
Class participation matters. You must attend every class to get a passing grade. Tons of busy work. Weekly videos, and research assignments. 2 semester long essays. Prepare to consistently working on assignments. He rarely responds to emails, he talks to you as if you are his child. Very rude at times. He does not like questions.
This guy makes majoring in comms @CSUEB awful. Wasted time in zoom while he played streaming music so he can grade papers. Spent most of class teaching ppl how to use Google Drive. No actual teaching took place. Breakout rooms where no one talks for 30+mins so he can chill. APA formatting & essay rules, unlike ANY upper-division class I've taken.
GPA killer. A lot of talk, not much teaching. Disorganized and a bit narcissistic.Seems like he's coasting through to retirement but @ the expense of your GPA. Also, note all the super happy fake reviews praising him for being the "only reason" some graduated,or how he helped ppl get jobs through his own contacts.Really? A waste of tuition $$.
Professor Pina went above and beyond in my classes with him. The syllabus is an important part of staying on course with his classes. Pina regularly offers to meet with students to make sure everything is covered, if they follow through with asking for help. Valuable real world and academic insights I would recommend to any student.
passionate and helpful. We had about 20 assignments (10 min of work each) throughout the entire semester. We did hw and projects instead of heavily examining us like most professors. 2 extra months to submit late work.Anyone who is giving bad ratings probably sat on their ass for the whole semester. This class was great. Thanks prof!
My last semester, had a lot of classes and enjoyed taking popular culture. Also appreciate your teaching style, you were my only teacher that ever checked in on their students and made us feel heard. Juggled 7 classes but your writing technique taught me a new way for tother classes and will help in my master's program in fall!
Made learning theories easy because he always used real world examples to explain them. Sometimes would DJ during writing sessions which was cool cause I loved his play list. Really sharp guy who kept it real. Take his class and you'll learn a lot.
What is there to say, read the syllabus, listened, followed instructions, turned in my assignments with the corrections he asked for and I got an "A". Clear syllabus, clear grading criteria, engaging lectures and group discussions about Visual Communication theories with real examples from today's media. Was a good writer and left a better writer.
Don't do it.We didn't learn anything- it was mostly time-wasting, listening to his music & watching him tutor ppl on basic computer tasks like creating a doc in Google. We did very little learning about persuasion in media. A waste of time to show up to zoom @ 8am.This class would have been so much better asynch. Essay formatting rules were a mess.
You helped me when no one else would you walked me to a health counselor when things seemed bleak. Thank you Mr. Pina I will never forget you. I learned a lot from your class but you are so much more than just a teacher. Always remember that.
I thought we would learn more about pop culture & communication. We sat on Zoom without real lectures,it was mostly just the prof chatting with students & giving tech support. The essay format was bizarre. The grades seemed to be based on opinion, not quality of work. The course was a waste of time. Not all slackers, some of us have high standards.
We had a lot group and class discussions of readings which many students clearly didn't even bother to keep up with then complained the course had no content. I really appreciated the writing work shops during class where the professor gave so much constructive feedback on language and APA format by really pouring his heart into it. I enjoyed it.
What I took away was new ways Pina taught us to use Acrobat for highlighting and note taking. I also liked learning to write and format essays entirely on your Google drive in DOCs. His method for quick article research and building a thesis paragraph was awesome. It helped me understand the readings and write a better essay. Overall solid course.
Very organized course with interesting group projects and activities. You have to get used to his folder system but then it's a breeze. At first the writing sessions seemed a bit much but once we finished the first essay everyone in class agreed it made a huge difference.
I really liked his appeal from employers who told him that teaching students to research and write well without AI gives them an advantage for managing AI workflows. This made his emphasis on academic research and APA writing even more relevant for us. Good way to connect theory and real world skills for after graduation.
Professor Pina has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, the course is worthwhile. The writing workshops are super helpful, and using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really boost your prep. Overall, a solid class.
Photo journalism course where we were taught newsworthyness and beyond basic shooting with a Canon 80D. Gave lectures on history of photo journalism and in class examples that helped us to add real work to our graduation portfolios. Get ready to work hard and learn a lot towards after you graduate.
Podcasting and Radio course where we produced 5 live radio shows and over 20 podcasts episodes. I don't think anyone ever complained and we were stoked for the experience. Made lots of new friends I'll keep after I leave and graduate from East Bay. EASTBAYLIVE in da house!
Pina is a true gem that fosters your career. I highly recommend this wonderful professor. You will become an efficient writer through his courses. I surely had a pleasure in take all his courses and I've learned so much from him.
Pina has been one of my favorite professors here at CSU East Bay. He offered real-life experience, inspiration, and work that can be proudly displayed in real work portfolios. Through his support and course work I have been able to secure various internships in journalism and communication fields. Would take his classes again.
Learned more because he took the pressure off and cut us a lot of slack. I know I stepped up when Pina made it clear we had to want to learn and be proactive for our own reasons not just for a grade. The alumni who worked with us were amazing and a great example for all of us preparing for jobs after graduation. Only Pina does that.
I think he is a very amazing but misunderstood professor. He had us do stand up recordings of our speeches in a tv studio in the basement of the library which most of us didn't know existed. Our speeches were recorded with professional lighting and audio that we then took to analyze and give feedback. It was spectacular.
