His notes are very organized and he does a really good job at getting you to remember bits of information just by what he says. He makes this subject more interesting.
great prof man
best bio prof. very interesting lectures
Dr. Scott is young and since being his early years of teaching, he tries is level best to give the student right and enough information. His notes are printable and very organised, he is also very helpful if you see the prof in person. Lecture are video and in the begining of each he has his Cool Critters, that really build up your interest.
Awesome prof. Really clear explanations and keeps things interesting. He makes lots of cute and nerdy bio jokes. Hes really young and pretty hot
THE best prof I've ever had. He made a HUGE effort with his students and truly seemed like he cared about their well being and how they did in his class. He was young and very clear in his lectures. He was also super good when it came to exams... He made sure that you focused on the right things when studying. 2 thumbs up.
He was a great prof - interesting to listen to, very clear notes, very helpful, and he isn't at all arrogant like some of the older profs.
He teaching is nice and clear but sometimes he covers too much (what he knows relly well).
Awesome! His lecture and notes are super claer :D Also he's exam is based on his lecture note. If you just study his note you will be fine on the exam!
Awesome prof! His lecture is really clear and his note is very organized. If you just study his lecture note, you will be doing good on your exam. Before I ask him a question I thought he's very cold guy but he's not.He tries to help you to understand. He has a passion!
good guy, straight forward on exam and very helpful
This guy was so organized and together it blew my mind. I had him for a very concentrated Biology course over the summer and he managed to present all of the material CLEARLY without seeming like he crammed it down our throats.
This guy is really good. He's kinda unformal and asks us to call him by his first name. He keeps his lectures very interesting starting out with the 'Cool Criters of the Day' and adds 'pop culture' examples. Is very friendly and willing to answer questions
he's cool and knows his stuff
He was awesome!
This professor was my favorite in University so far. He is so helpful and he is always there to answer questions. He gives study guides and methods to organize that make the course way easier and even fun:)
Insults everyone's intelligence by teaching as if it were still high school ("fill in the blanks" notes...grow up already). Highly over-rated unless you are a fool who needs to be babied all the time and are in constant search of some feel good-rhetoric and have low self-esteem. As a BIOLOGY professor: horrible. Easy A+ though.
Very interesting; enhanced lectures with the use of humour.
Great prof. I really enjoyed his teaching style. Made something I thought was going to be painful actually quite interesting. Hopefully I'll get to take courses with him in the future. Anyone who rates Dr. Scott as less than an awesome prof is clearly a crap student expecting an A+ for putting in zero effort.
Great prof. His notes were very clear and easy to understand. A good Biology prof, as well as Human Physiology.
Approachable, Helpful. Fill in the blank is nice but sometimes it robs the process of learning in a sense, because Sumner doesn't fill in blank. then people **** cause lazy. Textbook doesn't help much for this part. Do his reviews and talk to him.
Organized, organized, organized! Just the best Prof I've ever had. His notes were so useful and lectures were so interesting and easy to follow.. he does this "cool critter" video thing... it was actually rly cool... He is honestly one of the best profs you can ever have and the most organized man ever. Exams were fair!
He is a very young instructor, nice-looking and the class is launched in video, he comes to the lab as he promised. Notes are very helpful, and exam is fair. He also supervises the third year lab.
This guy is an arrogant ass. I'll admit that he is very good for helping students and his notes are clear but his exam questions are hard and often unclear. He recently took over the lab section and asks extremely detailed questions about the labs on the exam. Hes a young punk who thinks he has something to prove
Great Prof! Nice to talk to and he remembers his students!
seriously stay away, he is miserable and his purpose in life is to make your life as awful as possible! RUNNNNNNNN
He is nice and all... but doesn't know how to be a prof at allll! All he does during his video lectures is spew out information. He is smart.. too young and fresh to this area. Exams are brutal!!!!!!!! His midterm questions made nooo sense and about 6/30 question were found out to be messed up! Horrible
My favorite teacher in University so far! Very smart and helpful.
So, for those who found his exams hard, it's a biology course. You probably just don't know how to study for biology. Memorize and you'll do fine. He might not be the most animate guy, but I still stayed awake! Hot and Scott rhyme for a reason.
Great prof! He posts all his notes online so that you can listen more in class. That way you dont spend the whole class hurrying to get all the notes down. I dont understand why people claim hes just trying to prove something, his exams were fair you just have to put in the work. Also his mistakes = free marks, so dont complain!!
Took 1020/30 with him, he is my fave prof thus far. Extremely knowledgeable, will explain everything indepth when approached, super easy to talk to. His mistakes are your free marks, as someone said. He's great and exams were pretty easy if you listen and attend. some q's are about jokes he makes in class. I hate bio so thats saying a lot about him
Really nice prof. Very interactive notes and slideshow. Very clear and precise however.... He makes extremely difficult Mid-terms. Your going to have to add his notes plus textbook, because he likes to add random new stuff. The Lab portion of his exam is killer. Make sure you write EVERYTHING down in labs cuz he likes to put useless stuff on their
He has a fresh take on Biology and strives to keep the classes interesting. Also, he's easy to talk to in the labs and answers questions completely.
Mr. Scott is far from the worst professor. However, some of his explanations get tangled up like a shoelace operation gone wrong. What's also really annoying is how you're essentially forced to use the notes he provides on Angel, which have no room for good note taking. I wouldn't necessarily diss him, but I wouldn't recommend either.
He talks way to much during lectures and is very hard to keep up with. As mentioned previously, his notes leave no room to add the numerous amount of information he says during lectures. expects a lot out of students.
This guy gets an A+ for effort. You can tell that he has put great effort into preparing his lectures and notes. He's very helpful if you're having trouble and his tests are very fair! Go to class, write down everything he says, and study it. Don't read the textbook, even when he tells you to (No questions asked from there). And DON'T CRAM!
This guy is awesome. Don't listen to any other comments saying otherwise. It's university, obviously you have to work hard if you want to do good. His lectures are great but he throws little bits from the text on the exams that he didn't cover, so i'd recommend reading the text if u want an A+. But dont worry about him.. worry about the lab!!
The notes he puts up on JUMP are a good thing to have, lest you be left behind. He is funny, and knows the material, and seems to enjoy it a lot which makes it more interesting. He marks fairly, and puts review questions/study guide up online. He is easy to contact, responds to e-mails quickly, and will answer your questions. Great Prof.
So far, one of the best professors I have had for my first year. His explanations are clear, has genuine interest in his students, and always eager to help you out if you have some questions. His mid-term questions were fair (I didn't really study for it but pulled an A). I'd recommend him to anyone. Awesome and cool prof overall.
He is really good, he is young and still figuring things out. He is really helpful when you go to his office and ask for help
Class notes are clear and concise. Pay special attention to any graphs he takes the time to write out in class. Extremely helpful if you ask him questions outside of lecture. Replies to emails very promptly. Overall, one of the best profs I have had so far!
He is a really good video lecturer. Very clear, all you need are his notes and your good. No text book required at all, but you HAVE to go to class because to put the notes into a context. Other than that theres no need to add anything he say's really other than the blanks he leaves in his notes. Exam is really easy, do well in lab portion.
ok prof. talks way too fast so it is very difficult to keep up with him. textbook is needed to achieve a high mark in this class. good explanations
I had taken the evening class with Dr. Scott, and can usually not stay awake at 7 pm, however he was just so interesting and energetic that it wasn't a problem! He explains things, and is willing to answer all your question. My favourite prof by far.
Awesome teacher, he has a really good sense of humor and makes the lectures very interesting. Took the course over the summer, it was super fast, but really good. No "video lecture" take it in the summer.
Great prof. Approachable and willing to help. Video lectures are very clear too. Best bio prof I've had so far.
By far the best prof in Human Phys 2. You will have to persevere through some of the first few sections to reach the greatness that is Kevin Scott however. His exam questions were the easiest of all the profs on the final, however that is probably more to do with his awesome teaching then with the questions themselves. GREAT SCOTT!!!
Favourite bio prof I've had so far. Lectures are clear and easy to understand, which makes studying a lot easier. If you get the lectures onto your computer, watch them at 1.5x faster to save time (it also makes him sound like he's speaking at a normal pace). I found his exam fairly easy despite his section of the course being heaviest in content.
He is actually a very good professor. Enough said
Awesome prof, has some great jokes in his power points, plus cool critter of the day is just awesome! Great for the most part to hold people's attentions; at least as good as you can get when it comes to a video lecture! He makes us Kevin's look good
Not interested in children, and makes it clear throughout the class. He liked discussing bacteria a lot though. This course was taken during the summer, and was a rewarding experience.
Just a cool guy.
Horrible. He spends 10 minutes on each slide, and each slide contains a total of 5 words. Course is super easy yet somewhat confusing because of his extremely brief powerpoints, which make it hard to understand some important details. He decided to suprise the class with a revised marking scheme after the midterm with A+ > 93% and A > 86%
Excellent professor! Very down to Earth and has interesting lectures! Easy to approach and will help. Useless textbook. Class material is well prepared and organized but his notes are very basic and so attendance is required to make sense of them. Exams are easy if you study but the grading scheme isn't too fair since an A+ > 93 and A >86.
He's nice and willing to help if you don't understand. Jumps from point to point, lacks organization in his lecture material. But overall, the material itself isn't hard. He just has his own way of explaining it.
Very excellent professor, Midterm very fair as long as you study take proper notes from the video lectures. You should do great with having that said buying the practice exam booklet is also helpful in preparation for his midterm. Animal diversity section is very interesting
Lectures were interesting, especially with the "cool critter of the day" component. However, you must listen actively and really understand the material. He's a helpful proff, and cares about his students' success, so if you have trouble understanding... go see him. Overall, the exam was okay. The old exam booklets help as a study guide. Cool guy
Kevin Scott is an excellent prof! Down to Earth, knowledgeable, has a good sense of humor, makes lectures interesting. All around he is cool. His lecture slides are in point form, so attendance is required to give the notes context, unless you can just make sense of them. His exam questions are very fair as well.
Excellent professor! He has a good sense of humour, is very down to earth, very knowledgeable, and manages to keep your attention at 9:30am lectures. His lecture notes are in point form, so attendance is required to give them context. His exam questions are very fair, bordering on easy sometimes.
he was good, someties i got confused but overall very good and his exams wasnt hard at all. everything u can expect from previous exams and his lectures
Really good at his explanations, and his exams were pretty much the same as previous ones. Overall good prof!
just there to come, deliver and go. felt like he was doing everyone a favor by going there, lectures are pretty dry, very monotone. final exams were pretty heavy.
Super easy content, just a lot of stuff to know. He explains things very well, but hard to get an A because the grading scheme is A+ = 92+ and an A = 85+ . Textbook is definitely not required. One more thing: Phil from Modern Family.
Dr Scott was an amazing bio teacher. The bio 1030 material boring, though Dr Scott made it interesting. Normally I shy away from the 3 hour night class but it was a great experience, usually a smaller class and so everyone including Dr Scott really helped in understanding the material. You knew exactly what to expect on exams. Don't need textbook.
i would have proposed if i were only worthy.
bio 2390, the content was not too hard but he made it confusing, his slides were incomplete, and he talked really fast and expected you to write everything down. In addition, he tested you on what he said, and to get an A you need >85, and getting an 85 is very difficult because even if your answers are technically right he will mark it wrong.
exams include long answer and fill in the blanks. Questions are vague, yet when he marks he looks for very specific answers. the final prepare to do long division, he doesnt let you use a calculator which is ridiculous because it is an ecology class not a grade 7 math class. I had to vW, b/c midterms I got an A+ in biochem & a B+ in his class? how?
Super cute!! Not sure how anyone could make biology interesting. Take his class in the summer! It is intense but he makes it worth going to class
Poorly planned course, as we did not finish and the professor rushed through two in last weeks of class. Notes themselves consisted of a few confusing words and about a ten minute rambling lecture per powerpoint slide in which you had to capture every word he said. NOT recommended with this professor. Made me lose all interest in ecology.
I find it hilarious that others dropped the course this semester. An A+ was changed to being 86 and above. So so so easy. One of the easiest A+s I've ever recieved. If you found this course hard, good luck with any higher level courses
Powerpoints are clear and the textbook is a useful study, though there will material covered only in lecture. Course is easy with simple multiple choice questions and a right/wrong marking scheme for in class activities. Dr. Scott is responsive to feedback on occasion (ie lengthening space for long answer questions, which non specific in nature.
Dr. Scott is a nice guy but you can become frustrated with the way he lectures. He prances around the classroom with countless "uhm", "errm", "uhh". Without rushed note-taking skills, you'll be looking back at a list of random words. He can make the simplest concept into a maze for you. Thank goodness he changed the grade scheme.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! He is so clear and understandable it makes me want to change my major. Dr. Scott's lecture slides are pretty much useless to print off because all the important information he explain in class. He is always willing to answer questions even though he is so clear there aren't that many from the audience!
very amazing prof! you can tell he is knowledgeable about the lectures he is teaching. very approachable and nice prof. would love to have him in other courses again
best prof ever!
He's so nice! Great prof. I took his course in the summer so it wasnt a video. He always seems interested / excited when he teaches. Always jokes around with the class. Slightly tricky qstns sometimes coz he tests on stuff he expects u o alrdy know from previous courses (1020) but everything is fair! :)
awesome prof! he is very knowledgeable and answers questions very clearly. ive taken the video one, would have preferred the class though
GREAT PROFESSOR! His slides are really thorough and even made things interesting. His exams are based almost purely on the notes so as long as you understand what he's talking about in class you'll do great! Really good at teaching the content and even made jokes sometimes. I would definitely take a class from Professor Scott again!
Dr. Scott is one of the best, if not THE BEST prof I've had at U of M. I took this class as a mandatory science credit thinking it would be boring and hoping that I would get a good mark, but his lectures are actually great - he's really funny and makes the content pretty cool by using videos, powerpoint, and drawings. Awesome guy!
He is an amazing prof! He explains things very thoroughly and his lecture slides are easy to follow. He also likes to makes jokes here and there which makes him really funny as well. His quizzes are a little challenging but it makes you think a lot, which is good. Unfortunately, he had to leave my class for the rest of the semester :( We miss him!
he's been my favourite prof since i've been at the uofm. so helpful and approachable, i honestly wish all my other profs were like him. i feel as if he genuinely looks out for his students, just let him know you're there to learn and that you're eager to do well, and it truly feels like he roots for you. hands down, great prof.
Since his portion of the class focused on animals diversity and behaviour, he sort of outlined each phylum. Definitely refer to the textbook when studying this half of the course.
Difficult professor considering he says the textbook is not essential, when in fact it is your only hope for the exam. Considering his notes are worse then chicken scratch. Study the textbook, and teach yourself the course with it. Using Scott's notes as a guideline and you should be fine.
His portion is more interesting and challenging. Dr. Scott's notes are organized, but some of them are not clear enough. Reading the textbook helped me clarify the topics that seem challenging and unclear to me. He also usually visited my lab and assisted students when they need help. Overall, very good prof and helpful.
His lectures are interesting. He's also funny. The midterm was hard. Do as many past exams as you can because that what helped me to get an A. What I disliked about him is that he tells you to check the details in the textbook and then he tests you on some of the details. So read the textbook for his portion of the course.
Mr. Scott was one of the BEST biology profs i've ever had! He's hilarious & he knows what he's talking about!! There's 10 tests online, 2 midterms and a final. Make sure you go to class, don't skip! Also make sure you study hard, his midterms were kind of tricky & the final was harder. If you went to class, you would for sure get a good grade!
Definitely one of my fav profs! His lectures are very clear, and his material is extremely organized. Has a great sense of humor, and gives a lot of hints about exam questions. Very good with examples and explaining material. Excellent professor with great knowledge and ability to teach engagingly! Thanks Dr. Scott!
DO NOT TAKE HUMAN PHYS 1 or 2 DISTANCE. It is so much information that you have to read in the text and pick what is important and relevant. Don't have midterm so completely unprepared for final. Have assignments instead that are marked SO HARD. Kevin is nice about it when you email him though. Answered all my questions.
Best prof ever, his lectures are very interesting and straight to the point. he's very enthusiastic about his teachings and he makes you very interested in the subject matter. just go to lectures and write notes and you're sure to be getting an A .BEST DECISION I MADE WAS TAKING THE COURSE
Love Kevin - so enthusiastic. Very honest. Hot. Have gone out of my way to take courses with him. Makes class interesting. Cute sense of humour to not make Lectures dull. Lots of material but if you attend class and pay attention and participate you will do well.
Kevin Scott is wonderful. He tries his best to make everything interesting (which is impressive for plants) and uses humour. Met with him several times outside of class to go over questions and he was always happy to help. Cares enough about students he actually recognized me years later and asked me about my classes!
the final was a gong show, i had to memorize 500 pages of the textbook because he didn't specify what to focus on. i almost decided to not continue with human phys 2, but the curve from human phys 1 was friendly and he's being more specific this time around. btw, if this matters to you, he is by far the hottest prof i've ever had in my whole life
Great, funny guy! Quirky and adorably awkward! Very passionate and definitely knows his stuff!
One of the best profes Ive had so far. He teaches the harder part of the course and he did a fantastic job teaching it all. At first all the info on Animal Diversity was a lot to take in but he helped synthesize the info and make it "easier" to learn. Not an easy portion I would say but defintely a great profe.
His lectures were entertaining and very well made. He had to go through a humongous amount of material and therefore he could only go "so much" in depth during class, so you will need to do most of the learning on your own. Only studying the notes he is giving you will not get you a good grade. Writing down what he says + his notes + textbook A+
You don't need the textbook, you can just google the topics that he wants you to cover. I got an A+ but I worked for it! Study everyday and keep up with the material! Don't fall behind. He is vary vague with what he expects, he could be more clear on what he wants us to know. The animal portion of the course has lots more detail than the plants
Dr. Scott is a great prof, even if it's in a video lecture. You can tell that he consistently updates his videos as new discoveries arise, and I love how he puts little puns and hilarious jokes in his notes... it makes learning much more fun! He also visited us during labs and was very kind and helpful.
Really cool and really chill (even though I had him through video lectures). Made sure to come by in the labs every once and a while to answer students questions. Found he explained things really really well and his lecture notes are awesome (he includes concept checks and definition legends sometimes).
Kevin is a real gem. Solid guy. Seriously cares about his courses, makes extra effort to engage with students. Wish more instructors were like this. Can be a little awkward one on one, but who cares. Great sense of humour.
I found this course to be very difficult and this prof did not help at all. He did not explain the material well and he made the questions on the exam extremely tricky. Would not recommend this prof to any student.
The midterm review is waisting time he did not have any plan. Unclear. In fair exam. He will not talk about the concept and make question and expect you to answer them. I am so sorry for him.
He is not clear. He can not be a teacher because he can not explained any things without making mistake. He take exam fro mm concepts which are not mentioned and explain.
Great prof, his video classes are well organized. That being said, his exams are hard! I found BIO 1020 exams much easier and much more predictable. You kinda know what to expect in 1020, not in 1030. Tricky
Brace yourself. Many things on the midterm and final have never been mentioned in the class. Make sure to go through as many old midterms and finals as possible to at least expect that
He is one of the worse. Never go through details and most of the time just say some lists of the word and exam is about deep details you should a anatomist and biologist to could pass this course with him. Really sorry for his quality !!!!!
Huge beauty, being a biology course it requires a lot of work & can't expect to do nothing and do well. Great guy highly recommend.
Average to good quality of lectures, was in a video lectured class so I didn't have much interaction with him as a person, but he seemed nice.
I took Human Physiology 1 and 2 as distance courses. If you can't priorities and read A LOT then its not for you. The online quizzes are a solid grade boost. Dr. Scott is super caring and was really understanding when I handed in an assignment a few hours late, due to a lost laptop cord. Love him as a prof.
Kevin Scott is hands down the best professor I've ever had. All of his lectures are interesting and he always makes cheesy biology jokes, he is extremely nice and very easy to talk to.
He is super charismatic and fun to listen to. His lectures are really interesting but he doesn't do a great job at connecting concepts and I felt like I was just memorizing terms. His questions on the exams are super specific and pretty tough.
I took this course via distance ed. He was a really good prof. Him and the TA were very quick to answer questions on the discussion boards. He gave great feedback on the assignments. Although there is A LOT of reading and memorizing involved in the course, the final exam was fair. The assignments help you prepare for the kind of exam questions.
Great prof. Very accessible though email and office hours. Seems to really care about his students, went to his office a few times and he knew my name and would say hi during the labs. He is very friendly which makes it easier to approach him with questions.
One of the best professors. He is very methodical and his notes are well organized.
Dr. Scott is so funny and great at explaining, however he doesn't put much info in his powerpoints, you'll need to write down what he's saying too. Animal diversity is tough but he does a good job simplifying it.
BIOL 1030: Topics are interesting and Dr. Scott explains them fairly well. Visits the lab often and is helpful. BIOL 2420 (dist): Interesting/challenging course than BIOL2410 I think. Lots of readings you need to keep up otherwise you'll fall behind in quizzes and assignments that are due very soon. The quizzes, assignments, and finals are fair.
Kevin scott is an amazing professor, his notes arent very useful so make sure you use the textbook
Very organized professor, draws clear diagrams during class and is not too fast paced.
Great lecturer, very engaging and easy to pay attention to even though they are video lectures. Super cool and nice guy. Exam portion is very straight forward. His explanations were clear enough that I didnt have to use the textbook
I really enjoyed this course despite the fact that it's online and you have to do a lot of work on your own. I was afraid of the final but it was fair. Redo the assignments, quizzes, and targeted figures, go over main topics and you will do great. Dr. Scott is friendly and approachable. No midterm, 4 assignments, weekly quizzes and a final (50%)
Dr. Scott is a great prof. If you are planning on attending every lecture and taking good notes, no textbook is needed at all. Dr. Scott is also willing to explain things twice to you and is very patient. Also the midterm and final were one of the easiest and fastest exams I have ever taken. The material is also very interesting.
By far the best first year bio prof out of the 4 that do video lectures. Super nice and approachable outside of class. Explains the material clearly and more than once. Tests fairly and doesnt try to confuse you with the questions. Also, hes hilarious in his lectures and he makes bio 1030 fun to take
Dr. Scott is great. His video lectures are engaging and he's hilarious. He provides good notes online, but you need to view the lectures so that you can add details. Really good artist when he draws diagrams, too. And his handwriting is beautiful (like seriously beautiful)
Physiology is one the harder level bio courses, but Kevin Scott makes it enjoyable. He's really approachable and helpful. His exams are also very fair.
He's a bio nerd, which means he is so enthusiastic with the subject. Love him so much. And also he is such a sweet guy who cares about students but at first, he is pretty shy. So please try to approach him first and ask questions!
he made me rediscover my love of bio after a horrible bio1020 class. print out his notes and add to them, he does LOTS of drawings which are very very helpful. his section is a lot harder but he really helps to you to understand it. honestly a great guy who cares for what hes doing i really hope i get to have me again in the future
Professor Scott is a solid professor given the video lectures. He has very clear explanations of topics and questions on exams were relatively fair. His lectures are pretty engaging and certainly isn't boring to sit through unlike Zelmer. The only drawback I found was he very poorly organized the animal diversity unit and tried to fit too much info
Prof Scott was one of the best profs I had. Had him for Bio 1030 and his lectures were funny and informative (although it was only a video lecture). No textbook was needed. His half of the course is really heavy so it may pose a challenge, but as long as you understand his lectures you're good to go. Would definitely take a class with him again!
So I was the first year of biology to not be video lectures and what a blessing that was when I got this guy as my prof!! Kevin is just the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He makes lectures so engaging which can be difficult as some of the concepts are quite boring. The exams seem very fair at this point, although I haven't taken my final yet.
Kevin is actually the best prof ever. He explains concepts perfectly and is avaliable for appointments too. He also has very good examinations in two stage format and they're really fun ngl.
Kevin is such a great prof! Very good at explaining concepts and is accessible outside of class if you have any questions. The course overall was interesting and he made it that much better by incorporating examples and humour into his lectures.
Dr. Kevin Scott is an amazing prof. He clearly explains concepts, makes himself accessible and is very fair. He makes himself available outside of class hours and genuinely cares about students success. Highly recommend.
Kevin is such a great guy who wants everyone to succeed and is extremely fair. He marks you on many different things so it is easy to do well. BIO1020 has a lot of info being thrown at you so there is no way to know it ALL, but he really tries to get everyone to understand by doing iClicker and doing lots of drawings. Incorporates witty jokes also!
The first year that BIO1020 was with a professor and not just a video lecture. Material from the textbook is 80% of what will be covered in tests and exams and 20% from lectures (specific concepts that you need to know, tricky questions etc.). Overall, the best professor you can have. He is very caring and really wants students to succeed.
Kevin is an amazing prof. He has a way of teaching that makes his lectures really interesting plus he adds lots of humour to his lessons by making jokes. It's clear that he cares about his students and actually wants us to succeed in the class.
He speeds through lectures in class and releases video lectures on top to finish units regularly
he's awesome! he really puts a lot of time and energy into making the material accessible, and tries to equip everybody with tools to help them through the course. he's prompt at answering emails, and has even answered some of my dumber questions lol. he's also really funny, i enjoy going to class. thank u for being a professor!
Kevin Scott is unfair when it comes to grading assignments. You can put a lot of effort into a response and get deducted for "explaining too much". You can also lose marks for not adding enough detail that wasn't asked for. He only gives you your mark right before your next assignment is due giving you no time to digest the feedback and improve
He is a very tough grader. There is no clear rubric to base your assignments off of. He takes days to respond to e-mails. His assignment questions are not specific enough for you to get full marks. There is a ton of guesswork on your part. Distance-ed is different than real lectures with him. A lot of hardwork put in to get a bad grade.
still love this prof, took bio 1020 with him and it was good. He's very knowledgeable about his field and explains in a way to help you understand the material. Very easy to make appointments with outside of class and a very caring guy. Although there's just lots of assignments and quizzes that take up some time.
He is a smart man but teaches at too high of a level for an introduction first year course. His exams and lectures included information that other Biol-1030 professors did not even cover.
Took both human physiology 1 and 2 online and got an A for both. This class is super overwhelming as there is TONS to read and you are given no formal notes to study off of so you make your own. Although, if you study very hard for his exams you will be fine.
Even though his exams were very difficult, amazing prof. Always willing to sit with you outside of class to go through material. Makes boring information seem fun and interesting! Though you may not get the grade you want he is a great prof! Would highly recommend
I don't really understand the people complaining to this prof for hard exams, because for me who took BIO1020, BIO1030, and BIO2410 from this prof, the exams asked for BASIC concepts. If you take everything he says on the slides and review them every day, scheduling efficiently, you will get A+. Preview things as well. I got A+ for all those three.
By far one of the best profs at U of M took three courses with him. He makes Bio so much more fun and interesting his way of testing also teach you a lot about the course. Would definitely recommend.
Kevin genuinely cares about his students success and wellbeing while taking his class. Participation in class is mandatory because he uses learning catalytics, but it prepares you for exams and is an easy grade boost. He manages to make intro biology interesting and prepares you to preform well on exams even with more complex topics.
Awful prof. Half the questions on the exams are stuff that was never covered in class. Speeds through his lectures and wastes a ton of time in them doing online practice questions. Posts super long video lectures on top of regular lectures because he doesn't have time to cover everything. Literally pick any other prof.
Although there is a lot of material covered in lecture, he explains things well and is very helpful when asked questions either inside or outside of class. Class technically isnt mandatory but he uses learning Catalytics during his lecture which is worth marks.
Cares about his students and hes funny. He also tries to capture your attention in lecture by using learning catalytics to get you engaged with actually learning the material (answering questions in class). One of the best things I found was on exams he writes little motivational messages and little things to stay calm, very helpful and kind
Very captivating and does not teach in the typical lecture method. He has quizzes in class and posts highschool topics online rather than wasting class time. He also assigns homework that is helpful but easy. My only issue was that I did not have time to do all of the homework. - posts notes - Easy to understand - read textbook and attend class
He always incorporated humour into his lectures. Sometimes posted online lectures which were helpful as you could rewatch them multiple times. His exams focused on applications of concepts and a lot of information required came from attending his lectures.
Kevin is a good professor. His lectures are really good and he covers all the important material. However he spends a lot of time on LC questions and he expects you to be well prepared for the class (textbook readings and videos). He is very nice and accessible outside of class and seems to care about his students.
Dr. Scott is by far the best prof I've had yet. He runs his class in a very interactive way, with the help of Learning Catalytics (like iClicker), past year's students to help with questions, and two-staged exams to relieve some exam-stress. 1020 is a fairly heavy class, but Dr. Scott makes it bearable! One of UoM's best!
He's so great. Everybody loves him and he really knows his stuff.
Dr. Scott is an absolutely amazing professor! If you ask him one question he will explains it to you until you actually understand the material and really deeply cares about his students. His tests are pretty hard and you DO HAVE TO STUDH FOR IT at least 30 days advanced!!! The questions on the test are much MUCH MUCH harder
Do yourself a favor and take this course with someone else. Prof is nice but makes the course way more complicated than it needs to be. You've probably heard that 1030 is an easy A course - that's because whoever took it didn't take it with Scott. His exams are more conceptual than the other profs (who test memorization) and his notes unclear
He makes it easy to understand the material rather than just memorizing.
Taken a few courses with him now and I always love him. Pretty entertaining and does everything in the best interest of his students.
You have to do a decent chunk of work by yourself since he sometimes uploads video lectures that you have to watch before the next class. Nothing will prepare you for the 'multiple true/false' questions in his exam. Literally the worst. Other than his tough exams, he's super nice and is good with responding to emails and answering questions
Very nice prof. Formatted exams so you took it once alone, then a second time in a group. From what I heard his tests were more content heavy than the other sections of my year. Overall a great prof, his lectures were interesting and explained concepts really well.
The material is straightforward and requires a fair bit of memorization. His lectures can be a little hard to follow as he jumps around quite a bit and his notes are just a framework. You have to attend the lectures to understand the notes. The exam was from lectures notes and the group portion was actually very valuable in solidifying ideas.
The questions on the quizzes are so specific unless you know the material like the back of you're hand, you're probably doomed. But, once you figure out how to study for it, the class does get increasingly easier. The textbook really helps, and also the people in my class were awesome! Don't take it if you aren't willing to work your butt off.
Kevin is such a good prof and made me look forward to this class. He explains topics in depth and in a way that makes it understandable. He's also very approachable and it was easy to ask him questions and email him for help outside of class.
Scott is a great prof! He mentions at the beginning of the course that he researches how to make us learn better through iclickers etc. I think his tests are fair but also test your knowledge a lot. It's important to attend lectures because his notes are not complete when posted. Also iclickers are an easy way to get 5%.
professor Scott is the man, by far my favourite class I've taken. super caring in these covid times, wants you to succeed. Tests were hard but fair and had lots of opportunity for extra credit through i-clicker
Kevin is my favourite uni prof so far. He's hilarious and extremely engaging over zoom. Great coverage of all relevant topics and does not add any unnecessary information. Tests are easy if you go to class and read/understand the notes. If you are interested in biology, take a class with Kevin!!
Kevin is a great prof! He mentions everything you need to know for tests in the lectures, and overall cares for his students. Tests are pretty content-heavy, but the material is clear, only needs memorizing. Would definitely recommend to a friend!
I had kevin for bio 1020 and 1030 he was an awesome prof he set the course up for people to pass and as long as you pay any attention in class you should get an a if not an a+! He does everything he can to make the classes light and fun I would definitely recommend him!
honestly i'm not really sure where they got this guy from. His notes are not notes he basically plays with us a guess and check game it gets funny sometimes to be honest. He told us the midterm was gonna be from topic 1-8 and it was going to be 20 questions 6 of those were from topic 9 ya he is just a comedian like that. his dogs are always barking
He seems like a good teacher but his lectures can effectively put you to sleep. He does not tell you what mistakes you made on the quiz to waste your time. And learning catalytics are not very helpful, just good for passing time. He is constantly making mistakes on quizes and exams, it wastes time while writing assessments.
Nice guy, but makes learning from mistakes hard. Typos and mistakes on almost every quiz and doesnt give the right answers or results back on midterms and finals, while other classes are allowed to see and also get chances to gain marks back. Maybe online ED isnt his strengths
an absurd amount of reading compared to my other courses and did not understand his tests. I did great in the labs and felt that I understood the material but his tests were something else. I had the lecture in the morning but he would always make us to the quizzes (which were frequent) at like 7:00 or 8:00 pm which I always had to cancel plans for
probably the hardest bio prof for online. doesnt give back midterms or finals so u dont know what u did wrong. makes it hard to get a good mark and other profs are adding bonus questions and follow up assignments to boost ur mark on midterms meanwhile he cant even make a quiz without an error.
His quizzes and exams are wordy and over complicated. Lectures are barely helpful because his notes are messy and hes not great at explaining concepts. Hes made errors on multiple exams and quizzes. I would never recommend this prof to anyone, especially after hearing about how great other profs handle their studentss learning.
Oh, kevin. This class was a mess. If youre looking for a prof who is going to be clear: on lectures, quizzes, and exams, this is not the one for you. His notes were all over the place, with little to no coordination with the slides. I was always receiving emails from him correcting a mistake made on a testing platform from his end. Avoid.
When taking a quiz or exam, you never knew what to expect. The questions would be all over the place and very complex compared to the lecture slides he gave us. His lectures were hard to follow and the slides were not precise at all. Very hard course for your first year as there is 0 guidance
Notes were empty might as well not even post them tbh. Would always make mistakes on every assessment and set our class up for failure in every way possible. Wasted our time a lot by not telling us what our mistakes were on our quizzes while other bio profs told their students why they messed up.
PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Made quizzes and exams unecessairly difficult and ADDED MATERIAL THAT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE QUIZ. This would waste the limited time we had to write the quiz then he would email us saying he made a mistake. Notes are garbage. Worst prof.
I don't know what these recent ratings are saying, they must be tripping out because, in my opinion, he was a good prof. Went into topics in detail, answered everyone's questions, and has you thinking in depth. All you have to do is rewatch the lectures after class if you missed things so you get a better understanding of what he is talking about.
The lectures tell you everything you need to know for quizzes and exams, but they are very detailed. If you are struggling with a topic, emailing Dr. Scott to set up a meeting is very helpful. The quizzes are difficult but prepare you well for the exams. Reading the textbook was a must for me to succeed.
if you're like me and don't really like bio, i wouldn't suggest taking it with scott. His lectures are long and VERY detailed so take note of everything. quizzes were pretty hard (VERY specific so KNOW your stuff). READ. THE. TEXTBOOK. It's a MUST if you wanna pass with a good mark. honestly, he's a kind prof and nice person outside of learning.
Dr. Scott is a very nice guy and tries to make the class fun, but his lectures barely cover subjects that will be on the quizzes and exams and tests material you only find in the textbook. His notes are not able to be understood unless you watch the lecture live or recording within 24 hours when he fills them out. Great prof but could improve notes
Professor Scott is an amazing professor. He values active learning & is very helpful and is willing to meet with students after class or by appointment for extra help. Lectures are interesting, very thorough, & cover everything that you need to know for the quizzes. If you put in effort to learn & study, you should do very well and enjoy the class!
Awesome prof! This course made me learn what my passions within biology were. I loved Dr Scott as a professor. It takes some time to get used to his testing style, but once you get it and learn how to study actively, you'll excel. He really made me value active learning and putting in the time and effort to actually know and understandthe material
Wonderful prof! I enjoyed this class so much and Professor Scott's lectures were very thorough, engaging, along with humorous, and covered everything you needed to know. It shows that Professor Scott really cares about his students and is available outside of class or after class to answer any questions!
The quizzes are not too difficult, the problem is that deciphering the notes may be the most difficult thing. He makes a lot of mistakes on all his quizzes and leaves you to figure out what mistake which wastes time. He will waste your time on assessments bc he's constantly making mistakes. USE THE TEXTBOOK.
Take Jennifer, or go to UofW avoid this one.
Dr. Scott is obviously very passionate about what he teaches. He is very considerate and open to answering questions during class time. He listens to students and pays attention to how they are doing. I have never had a professor make a question a bonus because most students got it wrong on a quiz. Overall, great class.
Dr. Scott exudes great enthusiasm for what he teaches. A lot of students complain that his notes are hard to follow but that's intentional on his part bc he wants you to come to class and fill in the blank spaces. Quizzes leaned towards the tricky side but he is very lenient and will sometimes take questions off if most students get them wrong.
Dr. Scott is a wonderful prof. You truly see his passion for teaching shine. He is a quiet and soft-spoken individual who at times became a little monotone which made it hard to stay alert and focused during his lectures (avoid 75 min lectures with him). PowerPoints are quite bland as he goes into greater detail during class t/f attend class!!
At first I was confused why he never gave answer keys for sample exams, quizzes ect.. but I later realzied I took more time to try and understand why I got a question wrong then I would go and confirm the answer with him. His quizzes are very specific so read the textbook and annotate to suceed.
His slides are full of random words and very unorganized, impossible to understand what he was trying to say when you go back to it to study for an exam. He makes tons of mistakes on the quizzes, even on the exam. You have to know the entire textbook to do somewhat good on exams - studying just the slides do nothing. I've warned you - just don't.
Kevin was amazing. I got a grade in the 80's for the first midterm but still ended up with a A+. Believe in yourself and use Kevin as your resource! Many people don't like him, but you know what, I personaly belive that a lot of people blame professors for their OWN shortcomings. Active recall is a must.
Kevin was awful... idk how he has so many good reviews. The textbook that he wrote is so difficult to find information in and his lecture slides are barely worth looking at. He cracks the odd joke in class but he talks so fast its difficult to write anything down in time. He also constantly made mistakes on his own tests and even exams
His notes are incomplete. Be prepared to write your own notes and read the ENTIRE textbook. His quizzes and exams are poorly formatted he makes a lot of trick questions. Be prepared to spend 10 hours a week studying for this course. The content is extremely heavy. Avoid Kevin Scott if possible.
Overall would not recommend. His provided notes are VERY vague and he tests from material beyond the notes (unlike the other profs for BIOL 1020). We were allowed a cheat sheet but it was not very helpful because of how specific the exam questions are. Prepare to put 10+ hours a week into studying the material if you want to do well.
good prof but his notes were only accessible in class on purpose so was hard if you had conflicts and missed class
Professor Scott was very passionate in his lectures. However, prepare to have to very detailed notes from in lecture classes and read your textbook section readings he has in his course outline before classes. Professor Scott's exam format was quite different too, multiple choice & long answer + a group portion of the exam.
One of the best professor I've met. His lecture is clear but don't worry even when you didn't get some concepts. Just make an appointment and he is wiling to go over those concept with you even though it will take over an hour. tips for his class: solve sample exam questions before midterm/final U'll see mamy same/similar questions on actual test
Kevin was okay. His notes provided for students were very bare (unlike some of the other BIOL1020 profs). He also spoke quickly in his lectures. Be prepared to read the text book a lot before lectures so that you are able to follow. Something I will say is that he really cares about his students and was always willing to help and be available.
Has his pros and cons. His notes are VERY vague and he does speak very fast. He emphasizes the conceptual side of biology rather than just straight memorizing. His quizzes are also tough. However, he has fewer questions on the exams compared to other profs that have 60-100 multiple-choice questions. He also cares about his student's opinions.
This course was much harder than it needed to be. Noteslides were pretty much empty and not useful. Be prepared to read the textbook lots and get Information from YouTube. Makes many mistakes on quizzes and tests. Kevin is accessible outside of class and is willing to sit down with students to help them out. Overall, try and avoid.
Kevin Scott was a very thoughtful and caring professor. As a first year student it was refreshing to know that I had a professor that strived for us to succeed by making sure our transition from high school to now was smooth. His lectures provided us with everything that would be on quizzes or exams, so all you have to do is pay attention in class!
Kevin was an amazing professor especially for first year students. The lecture material can get a bit confusing at times but he's always willing to explain or answer any questions after class. He's good at getting back to emails at a reasonable time. Covers almost all learning styles in lectures through drawings and small group practice questions.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ONLY READ FROM LECTURE SLIDES. HE DOES NOT MAKE THE TESTS AND EXAMS THE SAME AS WHAT HE TEACHES! when he's teaching, you'll think he can teach well, but NO! He will make the tests and quizzes harder than they have to be. Super nice guy but exams and tests are hard.
he goes into a lot of detail and it is hard to remember it all. since he wrote the textbook he make you do ALOT of reading from it, and he overcomplicates stuff. the tests and quizzes are super difficult and he designs them to be hard. the other bio profs are better and there slides are super detailed while his are super vague and hard to follow.
BRO THNIKS CUZ HE WROTE THE TEXTBOOK I WANT TO READ IT ALL. he talks so fast but talks in circles. we get so much much done but I walk out knowing less than I went in knowing. be prepared to either drop his class or fail. he is to scared to post the class average because we all do so bad on the midterms he should be embarrassed of his teaching!
While Kevin is very accessible, kind, and helpful OUT of class, you'll quickly find that it's hard to follow what he's explaining IN class as it's taught on the basis that you've done the textbook readings every single day. Beware that the quizzes and exams are quite difficult.
Kevin was a very kind and caring professor. He's very accessible outside of class, and does his best to help students understand the material. But be prepared because you HAVE to take notes in his class, the slides provided are meant to be annotated. He goes a little quickly but his explanations are clear and easy to understand, at least for me.
I am going into my 4th year of science and I know a thing or two about what makes a good prof. Kevin is one of them. Come to class- LISTEN to him. His notes are pointers that he extrapolates on and is all you need in order to do well. Active recall is a must. He is so caring for this students and honestly such a kind soul.
no complaints
Professor Kevin has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. Use resources like the textbook, study sessions, and tools like unstuckstudy AI to supplement the vague lecture slides.
Kevin is the best professor I've had. If you take detailed notes during lecture you will do well in his class. He's super nice and always willing to help students.
Kevin is really knowledgeable about the class and good at explaining concepts. I found his midterms tough, but if you take notes in class and focus on understanding concepts you will be fine in his class.
He is the best and very caring. He knows how to share knowledge and really explains everything in very good way. Would take him in every semester. also very caring and helpful.
He's good. But i don't like classes with iclickers and group stuff since it's harder for me tho. His exams were relatively fair and he adjusts them if he sees people left mistakes. I hate group exams so that kinda hurt my grade since each time I was stuck with people who didn't know answer so we went for my answer always. Great and polite guy.
nice guy and really good at explaining things. His slides don't have a lot of information so go to class (he'll explain everything in depth).
good prof.
Tests were harder - memorizing won't suffice. He is always asking questions based on your actual understanding.
Kevin has been my favourite prof I have had so far. I took both 1020 and 1030 with him and both semesters I wanted to go to his classes. He made the classes exciting, fun and you can tell he really cares about his students. I would recommend going to classes as a lot of the topics talked about he talks off the slides. But great class/prof overall
Excellent prof: super passionate with all the material and understands it exceptionally well. one of my favourite profs so far. highly recommend taking with Kevin + he did "feature Creatures" - special organisms relating to the topic - nice brain brake and exposure to the unique organisms of earth + not tested on the 2 min info interesting facts
very wonderful prof
He is a really good professor and explains things very well! I have to say that his lectures slides are not very detailed so it is highly recommended to attend lectures and take some good notes. His exam questions are not straightforward (memorization doesn't work), you have to have true understanding about the concepts!
Kevin truly teaches to understand. Slides are bare bone so you need to go to lecture to fill in the blanks. Midterms were based on the practice questions he posted on um learn. Do lots and lots of practice questions, show up to lecture and you should do just fine.
Kevin is a really wonderful prof. His lecture slides are not very detailed but trust he explains very well during lecture and he is really nice to talk and is very open and happy to answering questions
Amazing and super nice prof! His class is very lecture-heavy, and the lecture slides do not contain enough information alone to properly prepare you. His exams are tough but fair.
He always has iclickers each class and makes us do 3 concept maps which aren't worth lots of your grade but is time consuming. His tests are extremely lecture heavy so try to make EVERY SINGLE CLASS or you will be behind. One thing I would say is prepare to work with those around you during class.
Kevin Scott is definitely very knowledgeable about what he teaches and shows his passion when he does. Make sure you attend all his classes and dont rely on the notes he posts! Everything he says in class is testable! All assignments he assigns end up helping us understand the topic even more. Was a great prof but had difficult tests.
He is super nice and has great lectures, but his slides are super bare minimum so you have to go to class to understand the material, and he does iClicker every class. His tests were fair and always based on the questions he posted so if you can do those you'll be fine!
