he is the math god....
HE GIVES WAY TOO MUCH HOMEWORK
TONS of homework. Difficult class.
a LOT of hw but a very good teacher
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
This guy loves Math, and you better also. Lots of homework, good clear lectures, but will often not answer questions during class. A bit arrogant and often condescending. You wanna be a "Mathlete"? ...take this guy. You normal? ...Take a
THere was a ton of hw which actually saved my grade. Otherwise, I woulda bombed the class. This guy runs a math bootcamp. But he is an EXCELLENT instructor. He is pretty funny too. You'll either love him or loathe him.
if you do the work you'll do fine...it's a lot though!
This guy definetly knows his math, but he thinks we all are on the same level as him. He jumps back & forth all over, is WAY too fast and it's not very helpful. His class was confusing and I hated it. Take Dale Nauta's class instead!

He's a good lecture/story teller...dorky, nerdy stories!...a LOT of Homework and tests aren't easy!...I recommend another prof. for 030.
Very difficult, unhelpful. he is entertaining in his nerdy little way, but that doesnt make you learn. I learned nothing at all in this class and had to drop it. I took with another teacher (davis - GREAT teacher SOOO easy) and passed just shy of an A.
gives you a lot of homework, but if you do almost all of it you can't fail his class.
He gives lots of homework! His tests are hard. had a steady B, but failed the final. If you can learn on your own, take him, otherwise another teacher would be better!
He is a really good teacher. I am horrible in math, and always sturggle. I learned so much from him it's unreal. He is VERY VERY weird, however, he really gets the point across to you. I love him and will take him as long as possible.
As long as you take notes and pay attention to his lectures, you will pass the class.
I am horrible at Math and I need a teacher that gets down to business and really helps you out. This teacher does not!! I can't stand this class and he needs to learn how to slow down and stop teaching vocab terms and do ACTUAL MATH PROBLEMS
This is my first math class in over 7 years and boy did I get the wrong teacher. Moves too fast to absorb ALL the info. Too many stupid stories, not enough examples. He'd be good for a math major not someone that needs to fill requirements.
this teacher sucks. he shouldnt be teaching. i dont recommend this teacher to anyone. If u want to have a horrible semester then take him.
The Math is easy but his homework and extra credit grading system is screwed up. He doesn't help you when you need help. DO NOT PICK THIS TEACHER!!!
If you are a Math Major then MAYBE you'll enjoy this teacher. If you are trying to just get through it and fulfill requirements you'll hate it. He has the personality of a brick wall and he ignores people's questions. He teaches this class like a 4 week winter class...very fast and NOT CLEAR! Bleh
He doesn't explain things clearly and he writes very crappy. So if your planning to take his class...all I have to tell you is...Good luck!!
a nice man but not very lenient. excepts no late work NO MATTER WHAT.(even if someone close to you dies) but not boring.
everyone trashing Mr. Shannon is an idiot. If you really want to pass this course, just study. dont blame the teacher because you dont know how to add. Mr. Shannon is a very helpful teacher, he will help you. just ask him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!He teaches u abt what a circle is for an hour but never actually shows you how to do the problems.U have to do all the work on your own,the lectures are pretty much pointless.I didnt use his notes at all,b/c they sucked! He goes up 2 the last second of class. But,it is still useless.
I am not usually a good math student, but Mr. Shannon was helpful and clear about what was expected of you. I also enjoyed his enthusiasm. He can be condescending, but only if you ask stupid or obvious questions.
his test are easy if you do your home work. i took algebra in high shool and got a D but i finished shannon's class with an A. its just how hard you want to work thats all. People who are talking trash hin are slackers. if you want a good math teacher shannon is the one
not very good but energetic
He was weird and the things he did in class were not helpful at all. class practically had nothing to do with homework or test and quizzes. if you want to pass dont take his class!
i have got A's in math my whole life but i barely managed to pass his class with a C. i hate this teacher so much. he is horrible. he cant teach.
He is very enthusiastic about the course, but failed to keep me and many other students interested. He degraded me and many others.Maybe if the guy showed more respect towards all his sudents, he'd have more of a class to teach at the end of the semester.3/4 of the class dropped.Hmmm, I wonder why?
Not too good. This guy is still in the 60's and his approach did not help me and many others.
hes a nice guy. pretty good teacher. you can ask him questions if you don't get something. hes really passioniate about math! tests are super short but kind of tricky.
Let's face it, I dislike math with a passion, but Mr. Shannon makes math fun, interesting and understandable. So I can at least sit through the class without complaining.
This guy loves teaching Math, if you listen and stop fumbling with your MP3 player you will learn something. I struggled forever with Math and most other classes until I took Shannon. He keeps you motivated and instills good work ethic. I'm not sure why all the other slackers keep bagging on him.
I took this guy in 1994. I graduated college with better than a 3.7 GPA but I got a 5 unit D from this guy. He had a crazy final exam system where you could raise your grade by 2 letters. I.E. if you had an F you could raise it to a D by passing his D test and then try the C test. >50% dropped and >50% of the rest had Fs going into the final.
Professor Shannon was helpful and went out of his way to help his students and the truth is he does give tons of homework (200 hundred problems 2X/wk), but that is what you have to do to succeed in this course. He was entertaining and animated unlike some other professors! I recommend that you take this course if you are willing to put in the time!
a very cool teacher. i took his class in my first semester at occ. math was never one of my strongsuits. his patience and clarity made the class palatable. he always had a positive attitude toward helping the students.
HES ALLRIGHT

poor style
At first, I didn't know if I could stand him because he is SO wierd but I soon realized that he is a great teacher. He is great at explaining things and cares about the students and his class very much. He puts a lot of time and effort into his class.
Very funny guy, teaches well & gives easy howework assignments! Quizzes you once a week (10 question multiple choice) and tests you based on 3 chapters. Easy to pass as long as you do all your work and do good on the tests!
The class is pretty easy but it gets kind of boring. He teaches in a way the gets your attention. You remember things from the way he teaches.
Great teacher! Weird, but cool.
He's a really passionate teacher. it's obvious that he enjoys math.
I hate math. More than anything in the world. But Mr. Shannon makes it somewhat interesting, which is an amazing feat. I like his stories about road tripping and whatnot. He kicks ass.
If you have ADD or get bored easily this is a good class because he is so animated and so quirky and seemingly obsessed with algebra. His goal in life is to teach algebra...his favorite thing in the whole world. He has an interesting sense of humor, and if you're not that type then by all means don't waste your time because this class closes quick.

hes very chill and wants you to do good...its an easy class, just do yur homework...if u fall behind you can easily catch up with the extra credit
Ok class not so bad. Give out 7 quizzes 3 test, and final exam. Assigns 25 Homework problems and 100 extra credits each night, if you want to pass this class I suggest you do all the extra credit that he gives you and all the home work that he assigns. Uh, don't take this class lightly and not do the homework or you'll be screwed.
Take my advice, do the homework, and I m telling you to freaking do it. Plan to do around 1200 homework for the semester, or you'll be touch toning the day before W. Half of the classes failed and you know why? Because half of them didn't do the freaking homework! Its hard to get an A but easy to get a B if you do all the homework he assigned.
The best math teacher I have ever had. Extremely helpful and pretty easy if you do the work. He loves math and keeps you entertained for the msot part. I HIGHLY recommend him.
Shan the man loves math and loves teaching math. funny and entertaining.. offers a TON of excd. extremely helpful. do all the homework.. allll offf itt and it will help you a lot.
Shannon is hilarious. Going to his class is like comedy hour, he is decent in explaining, and the homework is pretty fair as long as you stay consistant with it. If it were not for his humor I would consider a different prof. next semester, but he is entertaining to say the least, so I am sticking with him!
Do you homework! Or else you'll be dropping this class!Goddamn it, I don't know how to empahsize this anymore stronger, do your goddamning homework!Homework 1000 quiz 700 test 600 exam 500 attendance 100 preparation 100
Mr X is the most wonderful man I know. He inspired me to want to understand math, something I hated. He is very passionate and only wants to see you pass. Go to his office hour and do the work, you will be great. He loves his students and makes every effort for them to succeed! He is my math hero, easy on the eyes and always makes you laugh. Great!
You gotta do the homework... or you'll be dropping it.
this guy is terrible ....dont take his class
I absolutely hate math, but he actually made me want to learn it. He made every effort to help me because I was willing to put forth the effort. This is a lecture class, and you don't get a chance to ask many qusetions during class, but get his help afterward (or during his office hours) and he'll help you one-on-one. math teacher
Really cares about students and is a genuinly good guy. There is a lot of homework but he is very availible to help and prepares you well for tests and quizes. The best teacher ever!
i did all the hw and all the extra credit that he gave and still did not pass the class with doing average on the tests. i went with help with him and i still did horrible he doesnt explain the concepts that great so if you are great at math take him if not take a different professor.
test are unfaiur, no partial credit. i did all the homework and was there every day and i understood everything and i got a D. he took points away from me every day for having a ti-83 calculator and not a ti-73 calculator. when i asked why it was because i can't help my neighbor with their calculator. bs, he is a teacher you gotta jump hoops for
mr. shannon is a great teacher. he made me to like math, and math is not my forte. he cares about his students and has a great sense of humor.. although he can be weird at times. i recommend his class. just do ALL the hw and extra credit and you'll pass it!
Honors statisics course. If you want to learn math, you should complete his course and prepare to work hard. if you want to transfer, prepare to work hard. if you want to make your life interesting, prepare to work hard. every job i have landed has been because of statistics, and I owe a considerable amount to this professor.
Mr. Shannon is, without doubt, the finest teacher I have ever had for any class. His expectations were high and challenged us all out of our comfort zones. No easy A's, but just doing the work assigned really paid off. Attitude is everything in this class: put a little good attitude in, and take away a great experience from beginning to end!
test are hard...not good at review material...DONT TAKE HIM!
Prof. Shannon is great. Yes he expects alot out of you but the man is a good teacher and you come away from his class knowing you have learned something.
Shannon is very interactive. He definetly will take time to help you, before and after class. He offers alot of extra credit. If you do the homework and the extra credit, YOU WILL ACE THIS CLASS!!!!!
What a whack job. Homework every night but half of it is the examples. Role counts; be there and on time. He's never EVER taken a sick day. He's there to help you but his help isn't helpful. You have to buy this really really old calculator and bring it everyday. He's fricken annoying and thinks he's really funny. Try to avoid.
terrible teacher!! he expects you to know everything already. half the class droped it half way though. avoid!
Shannon has a really good approach to math, but he can become too excited about math sometimes.
i wouldnt recommend him.. he moves way to fast and mixes the chapters all over the place so its confusing.. tests are really hard and worth way to many points for only ten questions each.. it is a hard class to pass..he may seem nice but deep down inside i think he wants his students to fail.. to many pathetic guidlines for the hw
He's a nice guy to listen to for the first maybe 15 minutes of class...but like every math teacher he gets boring. he TRIES very hard to keep an audience. 1/4 of homework is examples. 1/4 is reg problems. and whatever else is extra credit which is like 100 problems. NOT VERY HELPFUL. BUT A VERY NICE MAN. LOTS OF HOMEWORK. and ATTENDANCE IS MANDATOR
DO YOUR HOMEWORK EVERYDAY, SHOW UP EVERYDAY. HES VERY CLEAR AND A VERY GOOD TEACHER. I WOULD TAKE HIM AGAIN. I DIDNT PASS CONSIDERING I FAILED EVERY QUIZ AND TEST. IF YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK, YOU'LL PASS, QUIZES EVERY OTHER 4 CHPTS. AND CHPTR. TESTS. STUDY, THE'RE ONLY 10 QUESTS. DEF. TAKE HIM
By far the best teacher at OCC. Not to be missed.
Mr. Shannon is a very easy, clear, and helpful instructor. I have no doubt he has every intention of helping each and every person in his classroom succeed and grow. He comes early and stays late, he is well-prepared, and consistently helpful. He says exactly what's needed for an A in his class and never deviates from his path. Highly recommended.
professor shannon is a great math teacher!!! its a lot of work for a class that doesnt even transfer!, but he really helps you out with study tips! and you get a craapppp load of extra credit points and homework counts! tests, quizes, and final are all 10 questions! i thought his quizes were hard at times! listen to his tips!
Good Man
Shannon is very funny, tho his jokes get old towads the end of the semester. He is a busy man so hes hard to get to when you need help. Once you got him tho, his clarity is unmistakable. if you don't like math, his class would be a good one to take. you get a bit of laughs and knowledge. Great Teacher! on a side note: lot of homework and hard tests
This teacher is hard. He gives a lot of homework and he's test are short but hard. I wouldn't recommend this teacher. Talks too much and teaches with what he knows and not what the students know. He is a funny guy though.
Quite the comedian!
Very sincere and helpful.
Not a good teacher, highest grade was a 86 in the whole class. Would not scale up so over 60% of the class got lower than a D and this is intermediate algebra. He made us turn in sets of 100 problems every week, had a test every week, attendance was mandatory and had 1000 additional problems due at end of semester. I would stay as far away.
One of the best teachers at OCC. Wants his students to do their best.Very helpful. Very demanding. The best educator I've EVER come across.
He is very sincere
you have to show up or else you'll be lost with the next lecture. he moves fast threw the text and has a special way the homework has to be done and presented. homework is easy but with the technique he wants, it will take up all of your time. if you like being kept on a schedule this class is for you.
he's a really good professor,he will help you understand it even if you're not a matha person
very tough teacher. If you don't get math, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! he's very fast!
He is very sincere
i won't lie... he is though!! but i took his math 010 class and it helped me pass math 030 with no effort what-so-ever! he taught me all i know to pass all my other classes~ take if your moving to a higher math
mr. shannon THINKS he has a sense of humor and ALWAYS makes jokes about speeding cars. the man can not teach. he is awful. do not take him.
TERRIBLE! Half of the class he is going off on these random stories and then shows a few examples. His jokes are NOT funny whatsoever they just waste time the homework is retarded i spend more time worrying about his stupid headings that NEED to be done right than i do his homework.. terrible teacher
If you want to learn. He's the professor. Teaches life long lessons along with math. He is quite meticulous, which is fabulous in laying the foundation.
I think he is an incredible professor! He wants us to learn. He does not do what he does because it is his job, he enjoys teaching! Always available after class if you need any help. It is the only class I do not fall asleep in.Talking about math for two hours can be very tiring, he makes it easy by going off topic once in a while to keep us awake.
be prepared to learn life lessons along with math. it seems a little off-track at first (perhaps because i've never had such an amazing teacher before), but it will surely turn into precious lessons your counselor can never teach you. do the work early, get help if needed. he will spend an endless amount of time with you after class.
mr. shannon is a fabulous teacher who not only cares about teaching each student about math but also about life and what to expect. he gives his time to help with any clarifications you may need and makes math fun and interesting. his quirky jokes and stories are part of his personality so please don't criticize a great professor for being himself.
DO THE HOMEWORK, IT IS NOT ONLY WORTH A LOT OF POINTS...BUT IT HELPS YOU MASTER THE MATERIAL. BRIGHT GUY, NICE SENSE OF HUMOR. HOT IN A BEARDED, VOLVO DRIVING PROFESSOR SORT OF WAY ;)
This was my best math experience! He forces you to practice good study habits..it helps. There is an assignment due everyday, tests are multiple choice( major plus)! there is a lot of oppurtunity for points, bringing your book, flash cards etc. I learned a lot, not only math but better study tips, and how to be a successful student. Do your homework
He is sincerely interested in helping the individual student. He will always help you after class. If you do the homework, you will understand the math.
I failed his class last semester, but hes kool so im gunna take him again next semester lol
hes interested in helping you and sincerely wants you to reach your potential. he's a cool guy. as long as you do the homework you'll be fine
He's an OK teacher. Not a very fair grader. In fact he's a really unfair grader! Which is why I didn't take him for Math again.
pretty funny at times... his class was fun... i liked it...
Well I took Mr.Shannon for Math 010 and now for Math 030. He does go fast (we take chapter tests weekly. He doesnt really show the material well enough as he should to me it seems more like a self paced class but he does provide many Extra Credit problems that trully brings your grade up! Overall do take him he's funny and many love him
Mr. Shannon is an amazing teacher!!! He tells you exactly how to get a good grade in his class. It's not an easy A, but he isn't a hard teacher. If you are a good student or willing to learn, you'll love his class!Always willing to help & makes class fun.Math isn't my best subject,so I took what he said seriously, tried hard, and got an A. Take Mr X!
Unlike many other Math instructors, he uses a interactive approach to try to get his students to realize the importance of building math skills. Uses lots of examples that relate to real-world situations. However the manner in which he takes questions was not to my liking, he doesn't take questions in class, he makes you wait until after class.
A terrible educator. I can commend him for staying after class to help and tutor students, but during class he lectures mostly about his sons, terrible jokes, his observations about society and his daily life. I highly recommend students to stay away from the professor.
I wouldn't recommend Mr. Shannon. He can be unclear in his lectures (that is, when he does lecture). He goes off tangent wayy too much and wastes A LOT of time. You have to explain each step in the homework. Its really annoying. He has really messy writing. Although he's a nice guy, his class is a waste of time.
He's a nice guy and is pretty funny, but he is simply ruthless about the homework. Prepare to sit for hours and hours trying to finish. One chapter per lecture and ALL of the problems from the ch. are due the next class. Everything needs to be done perfectly or you won't get credit. I love math but this was complete torture
worst math teacher i have ever had. he's a cool guy, but he doesnt teach. he just talks alot and does the problems on the projector but doesnt explain anything.
Unless you are able to teach yourself how to do Algebra, DO NOT TAKE HIM! He barely explains how to do something, sometimes doesn't even go over it all but instead talks about his addiction to chocolate chip cookies, and then it shows up on the test. All of the tests are worth 100 points and are only 10 questions!!!
He won teacher of the year when I started at OCC. To this day, I have no idea why. He's a nice guy, sure. He tries to make the class semi-fun at times, but in the end he just bogs down already confusing topics with "fun" and you have no idea what's going on, even if you do get math. He's one to avoid.
K yeah this class was the hardest class I have ever taken.I worked really hard to get an A.The homework are ch.tests at the end of each chapter.the catch is MATH is PRACTICE and he leaves that up to us by providing extra credit which are the problems of each section of the chapter. Ppl dont do E.X. and mess everything up on quizzes,tests&h.w.DO E.X
I'm taking his Stats class and he is the most unhelpful teacher. He doesn't teach, you learn on your own. Homework is due the following class date. He gives some examples in class but expects you to learn on your own. He is funny, but it is useless if you're struggling in the class. He is also very nitpicky with homework. Advice? Don't take him.
he spends the entire class time talking only to go home and not have any idea what you are doing on the hw which is due the next class. unless you enjoy attempting to teach yourself complicated math problems. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Shannon = Cool. People are hating are b/c they didn't put in the effort in doing the hw, or didn't bother to stay after class, b/c he does stay after 1 hour every class. His hw applies, avg of 30 per chapter which is not bad if you actually want to learn the material. I'm looking forward to taking his Honors Stats class next semester. He's great.
Great professor, slight fetish for chocolate. Probably crazy, but i can't tell.
Oh... a chocolate fetish...Now I understand...I didn't get it before, but now I do. A chocolate fetish. OK, I get it. I understand.
Mr. Shannon is easy, he gives you everything you need to know on the website. Even if you're not in class that day you can still see what we learned. He gives study hints and sometimes gives us the answers to half the homework in class. Kinda crazy but he's funny.
Mr. Shannon is a character! He was definitely the most off-the-wall math prof that I've had...it's probably the first math class I haven't fallen asleep in! That said, you do have to stay on your toes to pass this class. Attendance and regular homework are not optional and impact your grade. The tests are easy and he is super helpful! Good guy!
Really cares about his students! Posted tips and hints on Blackboard for the final around the clock...gave us 256 hints (math homework help, test questions, etc) in total. I am really impressed with this teacher. Plus he bases almost half your grade on homework &attendance/behavior.So you still can do well in the class if you're not a math whiz :)
If you are not good at math do not take this class. Mr. Shannon is an extremely intelligent man and assumes his students are too. He moves too quickly and instead of explaining answers just shows how to do it and expects you to understand. He wastes a lot of time talking about himself and his crazy additions.
I did 500 points worth of extra credit and he gave me only 250 points for it. The extra credit took me hours and hours and hours to do. The class was hard because he moves too quickly. There are better Math professors at OCC so don't take Shannon.
If you have a problem with being treated like you're 12, I suggest you don't take Mr. Shannon's class. Mr. Shannon takes off points for everything from not bringing your ruler to class to bringing in a coffee. Tardy once=1 point off, tardy twice=2 points off, and so on. Absence=10 points off. VERY particular about homework.
Does not teach anything and just expects students to know how to solve these problems with no prior explanation. He is pretty entertaining but it has nothing to do with math, it has to do with the fact that he is insane. Hw is everyday and is due the next day. Crazy about phones and absences. 10 points off for one absence! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
He's fun but he is a horrible teahcher, he never return the test and tell you the right answer on the test. So you will never known what you did wrong. I love Math since i took his class, i totally hate it.He have never answer your question or your problem when you raise your hand, only when you have yo see him after class. Don't take his class you
he's a horrible teacher. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS if you want to learn math and get grade. He will never return the test, so you don't know what you did wrong. Take his class if you want to learn how he lost his weight and his diet. He think that he's smart but he's not.
He is a great person and makes teaching fun, but their is a couple of downfalls with his class rules. But his grading scale is based on a final, midterm and HW and attendance counts for like 20 to 25% of your grade.
Spends a lot of time teaching how to study like he would and talking about himself and his teaching techniques when he should be teaching math. Bluntly: He is a condescending, narcissistic control freak who no longer connects w/students other than to remind himself how much better he is than them.
Really good teacher. Sticks around after class to help if you have problems with something. Teaches you to teach yourself math.
this class suck! i have failed this class, first time in my hole life.totally wasting time on homework and flash card. the way he expaining things isn't easy to follow and it's all yours to figure it out by yourself outside of the class and dont late for the class. he will points off.
YOU CAN NOT MISS A DAY IN HIS CLASS! ATTENDANCE IS CRAZY HE TAKES OFF FOR BEING LATE, ABSENT, IF YOU FORGET YOUR CALCULATOR. QUIZES EVERY WEEK (YOU CAN PREVIEW ANSWERS AHEAD OF TIME) YOU BASICALLY HAVE TO TEACH YOURSELF MATH. IF YOU ARENT GOOD AT LEARNING BY YOURSELF OUTSIDE CLASS THEN THIS ISNT THE CLASS FOR YOU!
Professor Shannon is the kind of teacher that community colleges are designed for. If you want someone to start teaching you how to study and subsequently succeed in college, take this class. Not only does he teach you statistics, he tries to instill many concepts that will help you for the rest of your life
Strange methods and strats. in teaching his class. Kind of funny yet over board on the things he does. Fall Semester no homework, just Midterm 20 questions Final 20 Questions. If you like teaching math on your own and spending extra hours then you need then take this class i guess
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He tries to be funny the entire time class, You have to attend every single class or else you lose points. I feel like I am in elementary school, he grades on misconduct if you are seen with a cell phone, if you do not bring your book every session to class, or calculator you lose points which hurts your grade severely.
If you want to learn about his parking tickets or how much better of a person he is than you than by all means take this class. If you want to actually learn Statistics instead of getting docked points for asinine reasons find a class taught by an actual teacher.
10 online homework problems a day. Strict classroom conduct rules and attendance rules. He is INSANELY helpful! He was willing to stay after class with my every day to prepare me for the midterm! In fact the day before my final i emailed him and he our study group at corner bakery to answer questions! His class is hard, but you will learn alot.
He is an awesome teacher !he is extermly helpful if you really want to learn!take his class and follow his order about study ...you will get an A just like me!i was thinking of dropp the class but at the ebd he helped me to not only pass the class but also get the best grade!
Terrible teacher. He did have a good sense of humor but he made it mandatory to attend his class. He also made you show vocabulary words for steps on the side. Wouldn't recommend him I had to drop the class, because it had to be the way he taught it. Didn't work for me either his way or an F I chose to drop.
A good teacher, strict with attendance but very easy, all I did was read every section, did NONE of the book homework, and got 100s on all my homework and quizzes. The mideterm and final are 4 simple questions each. Just show your steps and you will do more than fine. Only take him if you can keep up with homework!!
He's extremely helpful. Attendance is important but if you email him letting him know you won't be there he's understanding. Homework is done online and is pretty easy. Only tests you take are the mid-term and final. Both 4 simple questions. Just pay attention to labeling your steps and you'll do great!
1. Don't get behind on the daily online homework, as there are only 10. 2. Come to class; he really doesn't care who died. 3. Really immerse yourself in learning how to show your steps HIS way...this will benefit you in every aspect of his class. 4. He is EXTREMELY helpful. 5. He keeps things light and has a great sense of humour.
I loved this class. It's algebra so obviously we all were all a little behind the curve when it comes to math, but he tried to get even the students who hate the subject motivated and engaged. He cares about the success of his students, and it made a difference. He helped me learn how to approach the material in a way that worked for me. Take him.
His class is horrible and drags on FOREVER. There is online hw every single night, even on weekends and an online quiz every thursday. He will email you if you even whisper, telling you to be quiet. attendence is a must. His midterm and final are only four questions and are worth 80% of your grade. GOOD LUCK.
Goes through a section every day in class. Very fast paced. Doesn't allow questions during lecture, you have to wait during the 10min break he gives you, after class, or during office hours. I believe he truly cares for his students. You just have to be committed and dedicate A LOT of time- even weekends!! Keep up with hw or you'll fail!
Mr. Shannon is a great professor. I hated math before I took his class and it was the first math class I took at OCC. Now I am a algebra major and love math, all I do is math. He is very helpful IF you have the courage to ask for help. How can he help you if you don't let him know you need help? He is awesome. Just be a hard worker. Life is not ez
Proff. Shannon is one of those professors who will only help you if you ask for the help. His grading system is awesome, he lets you choose what you want to be graded on for your grade (HW, TEST, QUIZ) He teaches you how to break down a problem and shows you how simple you can make a problem! Overall easy course, but his class DRAGS!
Shannon is an awesome professor, his class is straight forward and he gives you the test questions up to two weeks before. Recommend that you take any of his classes.
HR: Math seems difficult at 1st, but after each test, you look back and wonder why it gace you so much trouble. The more you di it, the easier it gets. Prof. will stay after, so make sure you just see him with questions. Very smart prof. Very clear in what he wants. His class: Just does math. Studying: at least 2 hours a day.
Mr. Shannon is the best math teacher I have ever had. He is helpful, funny and motivated. I have taken math 10 three times before finally taking Mr. S. Now I am going to pass with the best grade I have ever received in a math course!! Sure, you need to study and put forth effort. I Highly recommend taking his course!
One of the best math instructors at Coast. Very helpful and motivated. Always willing to go the extra mile for his students. Of course you have to put in a lot of work in order to get the results you want, but trust me, it definitely pays off at the end of the semester. Take him!
One of the best, by far. Do the work and study. He DOES NOT tolerate rude/childish behavior. He's funny, passionate&caring! His tests are super easy, all ONE question, but you have to know the material(&the vocab). He values participation and will stay late to answer ALL questions. Amazing professor. Wish I could take him for all my math classes.
Great math teacer
Very helpful teacher, very good clarity.. basically gives you answers to test, just pay attention and a A will be no problem.
Professor Shannon genuinely cares for the success of his students. He is a great instructor who makes sure you understand the material. Ask questions if you need something explained further! He is nice about it, has a Sense of humor, Loves math, relates math to life and is brutally honest. Looved his class.
An easy A, just know exactly whats on the one question tests. A bit too easy if you really wanna be armed for MATH 30. His lectures are quite entertaining. will make a big deal-shouting and slamming stuff to get attention. Tells a lot of stories about his college experience & humble beginnings. Lots of fun!
By far the best math teacher I have ever had. He is very clear with the topics, funny, gives you breaks, he is so passionate about teaching and always is willing to help. Questions and answers for tests are given. Do your homework everyday and you will be great.
People that complain about Mr. S do so because they want to do the very min. to pass the class. He was always clear to what he wanted & it's very easy to do what he asks for unless you are rebellious & want to do things your way. He cares about his students. He wants you to succeed not only in math but in life. Excellent teacher in my opinion.
I'm the kind of guy who is SCARED of math!I haven't taken a math class in abt 10yrs prior to taking prof Shannon's math10 class in OCC.I did however spend 1wk w/a friend going over basic alg to prepare.I got a B+ in his class easy!Do what he says, ask him ?'s,HW is optional-I did none.10 exams, only 1 problem. Nice guy, funny too(in very cheesy way).
Love the testing methods. He gives only one question for each test and I believe it to be just as affective as regular tests but takes the pressure off. You have to work for your grade but he is always more than happy to help you and replies to emails faster than any teacher I've ever had. Hate math but loved the class! lectures are funny
This class made me so frustrated and overwhelmed with Math that I seriously considered just dropping this in the first week. There are too many parts of this class, the online sections, the Workbook that you have to label of the steps of each and every problem, the tests are one question and hard, and participation and attendance are required. 110
Assignments everyday and even on weekends. workbook assignments, and mymathlab. quizzes are 1 question and never what he taught in class.. in fact.. he doesn't teach anything in class. he goes on rants that make no sense. I learned nothing. you have to teach yourself
If you have a hard time with math then DO NOT take this professor. He'll go through sections 1 and 2 in class really fast, then homework online is due for sections 3,4,5 before we even go through it in class. I spent so many hours at home trying to figure math out on m own, Didn't even have time to study for my other classes. can't even ask ??s
DONT TAKE!!!! The tests are ONE QUESTION ONLY. Essay style tests you must know all the math vocabulary. Must have book, workbook and mymathlab. He was very unclear and did not have a syllabus to show or go over he didn't even have a syllabus posted! On top of that don't think about asking a question. Very unclear!! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!
I like him as a person, but I had to end up doing self-paced math. If you are single with no life, then you will get an A in his class because you will have time to do the homework. I am a single mom and between taking care of my kids and homework for my other classes, I just didn't have the time to get the amount of homework he requires done.
One of the best Math teachers at OCC. There is tons of work involved but I recommend focusing on just the practice exams since he makes those your test questions. It is important to not skip, you wont miss much but he docks a lot of point for not showing up or leaving early.
Awful teacher, pretty much 13 of the class dropped the first week. I'm a pretty good student with a competitive GPA, here is my advice so you don't fail: 1) if you are taking him for Math1030 make sure you make it a PASSFAIL course. It will save your GPA. 2) Stay after lecture for his tutor Michael, who is a much better teacher than Shannon.
His hand writing is ineligible!! One of the fundamentals of math is basic organization for success . Clearly he doesn't care about his students enough to make hard concepts readable on the overhead board. I suggest you have a background in cryptology bc you need to decipher the hieroglyphics he scribbles about.
His class was the worste class I ever took at OCC. I have never recieved an F until I took his class. I am a hard worker and a good student. He's funny and charismatic but when it comes to helpfulness he wasn't helpful at all. The homework intensity in his class is extreme. His test are one questions. and if you don't write the steps you fail.
He is one of the utmost funniest, smartest, and challenging teachers i've ever had. I recommend him for anyone hard working, in for a challenge, and ready to have a fun time. Math is my passion! I'll always respect him as a person and a mathematician.
If you have trouble with math don't take him! He has this funky policy with academic dishonesty. You put on a cover sheet how many questions you did but if you didn't do them "right" (as in show the work EXACTLY like he wants) he marks it as academic dishonesty! And that's no joke. So unless you want a meeting with the dean of students, be careful
Very difficult class. He makes you do ALOT of homework. You need to come to class, because it is 100 points for participation. Homework on MyMathLab and the workbooks are ALOT. If you take this class make sure to write all your problems down step by step. He catches your mistakes, so don't even try thinking of cheating or take it the short way.
Professor Shannon is an awesome instructor. I'm currently in his intersession intermediate algebra and about to finish his course. Please take him. He's funny, wise, and made math easy for me when it never made sense. Only lazy people will have any negative feedback. He stays after class to help those who need it and even goes out of his way to hel
He is true believer in EARNING your grade. If you want to learn, take his class. If you want the easy pass, don't. He is a kind man, if you ask for help he will give you the attention you need. Expect to learn vocab and participate regularly. I learned more in 3 weeks of his class than in 16 weeks of my previous math class. Lazy students be warned!
I hate math but his class is easy to get a good grade in if you just study. Tests are one question which is actually awesome. He also gives you a list of questions from the book to study and one of those are the test question. If you just do out all of those problems you are sure to do great on tests and in the class in general. Great guy!
He was the worst teacher I have ever taken at OCC. I am a good student and work for my grade. I have never gotten a bad grade until I took his class. I worked very hard in his class for bad results.
Excellent Professor. Knowledgable, engaging, funny, and truly cares about his students. But there is A LOT of homework. Online assignments every night. It was a lot of work, now I have a much better understanding of math. Don't take him for an easy A.
If you want to pass his class with minimum work, then this is not the class for you. If you are used to giving excuses as to why you can't study or do the work, then this is not the class for you. However, if you want to learn the subject and is ready to put in the work then his class will be an awesome experience.
Hands down one of the best professor's I ever had. He cares about you learning the subject. Lectures are engaging. You learn about how math applies to everyday life. If I could I would take every single math class with him because I know that I would thoughly learn any math discipline he teaches.
Hes a very Good Teacher, and Person. Dont cheat him and you will be fine. 2 things to keep on mind 1. Do HOMEWORK(all of it), 2. Memorize what he tells you , how to pass his tests.
So I started this class as my first official class in college as I was 18 and had just graduated high school. So overwhelming! He talks about his experiences with math & tells a lot of personal stories. I couldn't get my MyMathLab to work for the life of me and he didn't believe me so he just dropped me without notice 4 weeks into the course.
Horrible at explaining work material. Confusing. Not funny. Rude. Can't read his writing. I'd rather be taught by foreigners than him.
50 pages of homework. 1 question tests that you will fail if you miss one step. Jump off topic to talk about his stories (some of which are made up) and usually spends the whole class time on one problem. Assumes you know how to do the next topic. Makes you spend half of class staring at your textbook. Save your Textbook, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Almost got scared off by professor first day of class but decided to stick it out because I needed the course. No homework grade. Only grade comes from one question essay test. What? Weird I know but easier than expected. Professor Shannon was extremely helpful and willing to answer questions during break.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. He his the worst professor I've ever had. His tests are one question and if you don't do it his way you get an F on the test. The way he teaches is not how to teach a lower math. If you don't participate or show up your grade goes down a lot. Whatever you do don't take this class save yourself a failure.
Best Teacher ever I failed the class the first time decided to give it another try with him and got a B If your lazy and don't like to study or do homework don't take him if you want a teacher who cares about your grade Take him He requires a lot of homework and even though his test are one question you have to explain every step.
I thought prof Shannon was crazy when he told us that each test is one question, but this method worked for me. It forced me to study and understand what I was doing instead of 50 multiple choice questions where I'd guess half the time. Expect 150-200 math hw probs every chapter. He calls on almost every student randomly everyday so be prepared.
Mr. Shannon is probably the best math teachers you could ever have. His methods are different and that's a good thing. Don't cut corners in his class and you'll do great. He is honest, far and most importantly, he truly cares about his students succeeding. I have the deepest respect for this man. I wish I could have him for all my math classes
So, Shannon gives these test that are worth 10 points each & there are 7 of them. The test consists of one question, but he chooses that question out of top 10 list. Your final consists of 3 questions and is worth 30 points, for the course to equal out 100 points. He requires that you label your tests with formulas and definitions, to "help" you.
Lots of people don't like him because he gives quite a bit of homework, and you actually have to do work. "What, I actually have to do work in a college math course? This is so stupid." He's a great teacher, very wise, and smart.
Grading was 7 Quiz (1 Q ea10 points ea) worth 70 points, 1 Exam (3 Q10 points ea) worth 30 points. Sounded easy but its not. Cares more about the mathematical terms & the steps you take to get the answer, more than the answer. Answered right on 3 & received a 6 9 & 9 Could've passed. Go to someone else who will teach you math, not terms.
The worst teacher I've ever had. He's very arrogant for no apparent reason. He claims to care about his students but does nothing to help them if they don't understand the material. He assigns crazy homework and test are 1 question, but you 50% of your grade on the test is explaining how you got the answer. He purposely makes it more difficult.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I took him for Math 10 and obviously I need more help in math. His tests are terrible it's like all or nothing basically. You have to show all the steps. The point is to get the right answer and you could get the right answer and still fail the test. Whatever you do don't take the class save the F.
I took Mr Shannon during summer. He gives you one question per exam and you have to solve and write all the steps to that conclusion. His teaching method is very helpful. He doesn't wait for someone to blurt out the answer, he walks you through the whole process. Also beware, he talks politics in class. He's a libertarian and listens to NPR.
Awful, 1 question per exam. His lectures don't even relate to math. He goes off on rants and makes no sense at all. save the time and skip him
I took him for math10 & 30 and one thing is clear, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LAZY. I think he's a great teacher! I learned the most in his math class than all of my high school years. If you practice the questions he assigns you'll do fine. He's VERY CLEAR in explaining how to do the problems & what he expects. Take him if you want to LEARN!
If you want to stay on the safe side and NOT take math again, then DONT take this class. DONT be fooled by his smile when he walks through the door. He can be very rude, and go off topic into politics. Sad because he had accused his own class of wasting time yet he wasted it the most like running around outside DURING lecture.
I took him for math10 and one thing is clear. I thik he's a great teacher! He's very clear in explaining how to do the problems & what he expects. Take him if you want to LEARN! Good Luck!
If you actually want to learn why you need to do things a certain way, this is the class for you. Yes, the exams are usually just one question, but you have to explain every step so it's long, but I have never understood math more than I do now. He has a good perspective on what education should be and he shows that in his approach.
I personally believe Shannon is one of the greatest professors. This semester he didnt assign homework and you have a test about every week. The tests are one question but for Math 10 he gives the students 10 possible test questions, so if you pay attention in class and actually study you will succeed. Shannon is one of the best professors Ive had
Class is set up to have 1 test each week, each test consists of just 1 problem. Easy right? Sort of. he wants to see it all in essay format, where you explain each problem step by step. Once I figured him out things started to get better, but more than half of the class dropped by the time of the final. He's engaging, but stay on top of things!
Mr Shannon is a wonderful teacher. His was the first math class I enjoyed. When we told him we were going to the library for study group, he would show up to see if we had any questions.
The math is not hard, he MADE it hard. You have to explain every steps you do in the test in order to get full grade. Be sure to be on time on the day you take the test because if you are late the maximum you can get is 5. He is really a strict teacher, no cellphones, no foods, no drinks (even water is unacceptable), and no talking.
Kevin Shannon was the best math professor I have ever had. His approach to having you understand math as opposed to memorizing and regurgitating worked really well for me. You can't apply something if you don't understand it and j definitely left that class feeling like I understood what was going on in a math class for once.
Professor Shannon's class is a perfect example of what a college course should be. It requires the work ethic and focus expected at UC or Cal State level. If you're looking to blow through the class with minimal effort and a passing grade, take a different class. If you're looking to learn A LOT and try your hardest, he's absolutely there for you.
He knows his stuff. However he can be kind of difficult, goes off on tangents talking about politics and nonsense. Can seem unapproachable and rude. His smile and every story he tells seem very calculated and not true. 4 Test and only 4 questions on each test. however just getting the question right won't get you an A you have to explain even step
Prof Shannon is a really nice guy, but not a very good teacher. He expects you to do twice the amount of work at home, and his tests are only four questions. The amount of detail required on his test is absolutely terrible. If you don't put down everything he asks for, there is no way you will get higher than a D. Stay away.
Kevin Shannon is everything I want to be when I am a teacher one day. There are no shortcuts in his class, and he requires you understand all concepts behind a particular problem. His classes are not easy. He treats his students like adults and therefore whatever work you put in, you get out the same. I would never take another professor.
horrible horrible horrible. started off with a class of 150+ in february, by mid april we were down to 42 students. dont even wanna know how many more dropped before the final was even done! sad. take dr. AP instead and save yourself unless youre REALLLLLLLY good at math.
Professor Shannon teaching method is great for the ones having difficulty with math. He required for all problems to be; identified, explained, displayed, graphed, and write every step and formula used. He does not take points off, he adds up. He did offer extra credit, and he did reviews before every test. Everything is well explained and clear.
Doesn't tolerate excuses so don't bother with them and get ready to work hard. If he says he offers extra credit, MAKE SURE you take advantage of it! If he says he'll be someplace to help out, take advantage of it. He really cares about his students and made us feel at ease about every test, but in the end, it's up to you to pass. Great teacher.
He truly cares about his students. He is structured and strict! Turn your phones off and don't show up to class late. Most students drop due to his firmness. He is the ONLY professor that helped me understand math. His exams are very cut and clear. Study word for word: Identify, Solve, Explain, Check, and Display. Key word: detailed oriented.
I was blessed to be mentored by this man. He is FAIR, and has much WISDOM to share. One must either soak up the game like a sponge or fall behind with the rest of the losers. WINNERS WIN and losers.... well...... look at all his haters.... you'll understand. I highly recommend Prof. Shannon. BEST TEACHER EVER!
I seriously LOVE Professor Shannon. He cares a ton about teaching the students and making sure they understand. The only issue I ever noticed was disrespectful kids playing on phones, eating or drinking, being late or skipping the second part of math after intermission. All you have to do is be respectful and follow the easy rules! He notices!!!
The best teacher I have ever had! He makes you work for your grade by learning the course material inside and out. He not only teaches math but life lessons and tricks to help you better yourself as student and functioning human being to society. If you put in the effort he will go above and beyond to help you day in and day out.
Alright, Mr. Shannon is a great guy and he's been through a lot recently, but I feel his grading system is horrible. 4 questions on each test. You gotta show everything. For the first test, I got all the answers right and some of my work was off and I ended up getting a D. Grading system is not very fair. and A LOT OF HW. Very odd guy lol
One of the best I've ever had, seriously. Let me just say that any negative feedback he's ever received is from students who slack, don't show up and yet expect to pass-TRUST ME. Show up, do the work and you'll pass for sure. This was my first semester back to college in 6 years and I got an A in his stats class simply bc I paid attention and did what he asked, simple as that. I met student from the other professors class who struggled so hard bc the teacher skipped lessons and expected them to know it, they were miserable and I felt so thankful. Do yourself a favor take Shannon, your welcome.
Best teacher i've ever had. Makes math fun even if it is something you struggle with. Really cares about his students and helps you out a lot as long as you ask. Take him!
I took him for Math010. Reviewing all the possible questions for the tests is CRITICAL. Does mark you down for certain things (you shouldn't be doing anyways like no attendance or eating in class (like me... lmao -_-) But that's to be expected. I'm horrible at math. But taking his class helped me- A LOT. Some1 is thumbs downing all good reviews btw
If you are a shy person (like me), be aware that he calls on students every class meeting at random for you to answer problems BUUUUT if you just put all anxiety aside you will learn so much from his class. I understood more math in one semester than all my high school years although I dreaded being called on.
