Extremely hard to understand. Very helpful though. Will answer every question although sometimes he answers them with questions so you have to think about it. He comes from Indiana where they said he was a tough prof. I suspect that if this wasn't a DL class it would have be extremely difficult. Dr. S. loves history and it shows.
He is a great professory I took him during the summer and all of his test were take home. Most of his test was based on the lectures he gave and he always gives u a study guide in days advanced. He is very helpful and i could understand him when he gave lectures. He's an awesome professor and i would take him again.
Dr. Smant is awesome!!! I took him online! He drops your lowest test grade & if you go to his siminars(there are only 3) you get 5 extra credit points each!!! He gives you a study guide so you know what will be on the text... I dont understand why people are saying he was hard to understand if you would listen you can comprehend what he was saying.
Dr. S takes to long to grade exams. His reviews are not helpful. Too much information giving at once for only 50 questions on an exam. He needs to be more specific and precise in teaching an ITV course.
I feel he is a great professor really cares about the subject and that the students understand it. He has trouble with some sounds such as m,b,s but he is almost always understandable. His test are take home but essay portion depend heavily on his lectures. I feel he should be more specific in what he wants on the essay. The textbook is awful.
I took him for an ITV class. He made it very easy. He gave us a list of every subject that would be on the test and then a review before evey test. I made an A on every exam. Anyone who did got a bad grade in this class didn't read the book.
I took his tv class and didnt buy the book but his seminars are VERY helpful and the test comes mostly from those and there are a few ten at the most from the videos i would recommend this teacher
Dr. Smant is the best. His love for history really shines through, and he makes it seem more interesting. His exams are fairly challenging, but just the right amount-if you pay attention, you will do well.
Very helpful instructor. Offered test reviews prior to starting assignments. He offers seminars worth extra credit. All the questions come directly from the reviews; there are NO SURPRISES!!! Just be ready to read!
Dr. Smant is an AMAZING professor! His tests are very easy, but only if you read your chapters and study the topics that he tells you to. (As with any college class, you either know it or you don't). Don't take this class expecting an A handed to you...if you put effort into reading you will walk away with one.
Gave take-home tests that were fairly easy if you read the book.
Taking this ITV course and my god this class is so EASY. I don't read the book just work the study guide. He gives you reviews before test. He will offer seminars, but if you don't go to the seminar he sends you the answer to the review later. Honestly you don't have to read the book at all. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT AN A
I took the ITV class. This class has no busy work, which I like, just tests. You get 5 extra credit points for every seminar you attend. The reviews aren't great. He'll say "know these people:" & people like George Washington are on that list. There's a lot to know about GW! I have an A in every class, but this one I have a B for that reason.
just take notes.....you can use your notes on all the test. All the test except the final are take home test!!!! and the final only covers the last chapter of the book
Took lecture class. Dr. Smant loves what he does, you can tell. His shows and music make this subject more interesting. 4 take home tests 100 points each(these are a challenge, but doable) and a final. Final is worth 200 points so make sure your study. No homework, 25 extra points if you miss less than 3 classes. Great Professor!
Allot of reading, you will read the entire textbook in a semester but you do learn allot. Be sure to stay on track reading all chapters and memorizing what he gives you to study and you will do well. Also gives extra credit for attending his seminar before each exam worth 5 points.
He is very nice
History1301 ITV/summer.There is ALOT of reading invloved, but that should be expected. You will end up reading the entire book but its worth it. You will also need the Student Course Guide book. Alot of the questions from the test comes from that. There is only 3exams; 3seminars(worth 5pts extra)DONT BUY THE DVD SETS- Its On the virtual DL site.
Seriously THE BEST history professor EVER!!! He helped when I needed it and the seminars explained so much. You have to read what your supposed to but that's a given. Wish all my professors were this good.
I took his ITV class. He gave reviews at campus and also emailed out review questions. As long as you take the time to answer the questions you will do just fine!! I would take his class again, and I dont enjoy history! :-)
Took ITV class in summer. Fast paced, Dr S gave us a lecture and I use the study guide. Use the study guide and follow up with reading to make an A. The book is helpful if you can't afford it, use the internet.
Very very smart like the book is engraved in his brain, if your class finishes at 1am, 2pm doesn't matter when its over he uses EVERY MINUTE. As long as you take notes Whether he speaks verbally or written you should write it too, with good notes this class is cake
Very helpful! The summer ITV class was indeed one of the better classes, even though I had to study quite a bit. It was just fast-paced. He made it easier though! He gives extra credit and keeps up with announcements and grading. Key for acing the class: his study guides and seminar summaries! Read and write them! That's it! :)
Took ITV for summer very easy but you must read the book and do the reviews to pass this class all exams are straight from reviews, course guides, and the book. Great teacher.
I took his class over the summer and made a B. You have to study and read the whole book in this class to ace the test.I definately WOULD NOT TAKE HIM AGAIN!! He offers extra credit for attending seminars and curves tests, so thats how you know he's hard! Alos, he rewords the questions from the study guide and review, so its very confusing.
good teacher!!! shows videos to explain lectures. He teaches in a very interesting way.
I took Mr. Smant's online class, overall I really enjoyed it. We would meet sometimes at TCC to review our tests and it was very helpful. He helped us out as much as possible. The tests were pretty easy as long as you studied for them! I would recommend him!
I had no interest in Government whatsoever,& Professor Smant amazingly kept my attention with his diverse ways of teaching. He gives reviews and YOU WILL MAKE AN EASY A if you study them and take in class notes. I suggest his class 100%.
Great class. Great teacher. It is not easy class unless you study and read no going around the reading. But you hve pleanty tie given to get it down. no craming. Really nice teach and really helpful. thanks Dr. Smant!
his take home test had questions on things we didn't go over, don't need the book
I also got bored in class, yawn
Took ITV, really straightforward. He gives a study guide, so....if you do it the test is no problem. He drops the lowest test score, gives EC, and a curve. You need to buy both books, they are very inexpensive.
I took the ITV course this spring. Great class, probably one of the easiest classes I've had in awhile. As long as you study his study guides and the study guide that goes with the book you will do fine. He does test reviews on campus before the tests, does a great job of covering the material!!
I took the ITV class. Keep in mind that history is my worst subject and I made an 89. He holds seminars/test reviews that are very helpful and reward extra credit. He is also a very funny, intersting guy. I'd take him again.
This class is very easy!!! There is no way of failing this class!! He makes history very intresting and i definitely recommend to taking him! He's a great teacher! Just come to class and take notes if u miss a day u missed alot of information for the next exam!!! But overall he is the best!!
Awesome Teacher! Take good notes, record the lecture if you like. You'll need it for the tests. Use the book as back-up. Makes history interesting! I would take again!
Great teacher! class is very interesting and he supports his lectures with videos to make even more understandable. All test are from notes taken from class, so take good notes to pass plus are take home except final. Easiest A
Made history interesting..... I made an A.....and I actually learned history. I recommend Dr.Smant.
*ONLINE* Best part... before every test there is a test prep seminar at NE where you get 5 points on your exam if you show. There are 3 exams and he drops the lowest then there is a FINAL which is not inclusive. There is oncampus testing. Would take again
I just took his ITV class and it was very straight forward. You have to study thoroughly (I probably studied about 5 hours for each test) but everything is based directly off of his reviews. You can earn a total of 9 bonus points for each test, and I highly recommend going to his seminars. Ended up getting an A+ in the class
He loves history but so do I. Lectures are on video-free through BlackBoard. Videos are documentary style which made it more interesting & easier to learn material, practically through osmosis. Took in summer: 3 exams only. 5 points /reveiw attended. Recommend at least watch videos & go through study guide if don't read book. I thouroughly enjoyed!
**DL class. Easy A. I do not enjoy US history at all, and I very much enjoyed the textbook and the professor. Review sessions are helpful, and he gives an extra 5 points on the test if you go. Dr. Smant is very nice, helpful, and funny. I highly recommend the study guide because he uses those questions on the test!
Read the book or fail. Tests were all take home except the final, but you have to think critically about the answers. Not straight-forward at all! Overall good teacher, YOU WILL LEARN HISTORY if you want a good grade.
Took Online Class. He loves History and it shows. He has a good sense of humor. Uses Videos & Music in his lecture reviews. gives opportunity for 9 extra credit pts each test. Learned a lot. Need to read Text, watch videos and study the reviews. If you prioritize, you will make a good grade and learn some History! Recommend him for Hist 1301
Funny professor and interesting class. I had him for Friday classes which were 3 hrs long, but he kept the class interesting with videos and music. All tests were ONLINE, but that does not mean they were easy! Don't think you can just google the answers and get an A. You have to use all your resources. Assignments online. Timed final. Good class!
This was my second course with Dr. Smant and both times I enjoyed his class. He loves history and you can't help but like it also. He uses videos and music to keep your interest. Believe me it worked on a Friday evening. I highly recommend Dr. Smant.
Absolutely loved Dr. S! Gave reviews for quizzes and tests. Very helpful and answers email quickly. Highly recommend taking his class!
Not a big fan of history but you will learn it if you want a good grade. Must read the book. Very friendly, good sense of humor, and is a good teacher. Very little actual work but you WILL learn! Gives you lots of test and quiz prep. You can NOT expect any help from Google here my friends....
Awesome professor !
VERY time consuming with 7 hours of video, textbook reading, and long reviews There were 4 quizzes, 4 tests, 2 essays, and the grading system is horrible. The quizzes and tests are shortly timed with the most random and tricky multiple choice questions ever. Unless you have a photographic memory - DO NOT take this online class!
Dr. Smant is a very hard grader. He gives reviews for quiz and tests but they don't help much. You have to read every word of the text book and have an excellent memory because he LOVES trick questions. Don't take this class durring summer sessions, makes it even harder.
Asks tricky questions that are not on review and are hard to find in book. Even if you read your textbook and study. Ridiculous. Barely any time on tests.
Way too strict for a history course.
He's very funny and enjoyable to listen to. He is easy for the most part, I only had trouble on one reading assignment that I feel wasn't fairly graded and dropped my grade ten points. I am taking him again though, just because I learn a ton sitting in his lectures.
More reading for this than all my classes combined. Never responded to emails. One minute per question on the test and can't go back to check over them. Tons of review questions but the test questions were tricky, a lot of them weren't really covered in the reading, questions and required videos. Worst class I've ever taken. Had to drop.
He works with you as long as you let him know what's going on. Responds to emails in a timely matter. I have a big problem come up and he worked with to to get through it. If you do the work you will be OK. 4 test one will be dropped , 8 quizzes all count, 3 two hundred word blogs. READ THE CHAPTERS
Being a health care major, this by far is thee worst class I've ever taken! Loads of reading, countless hours of videos at 2hrs long, he doesnt give you enough time on the test and quizes! You arent allowed to go back and change your answer NOR review your questions that you got right or wrong! Review questions are endless! RUN 4 THE HILLS!!
When I signed up for this online History class it was with a different teacher, when the course already started it was with this professor. I do not recommend at all. Basically if you don't have a job then maybe it'll work out for you but if you do, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Ridiculous odd timed quizzes. Take my advice and do not take him.
Online course. Hours and hours of videos in addition to the 4-5 chapters per unit. Study questions were numerous and the tests didn't follow the material covered. Insufficient time allowed for the tests. Confusing "blog" assignment. Lectured on proper grammar and spelling, but doesn't follow his own expectations. No student interaction on the db.
Class requirements and expectations are not clear due to improper instruction. Unlike any History course I've ever taken and not in a good way. Unrealistic expectations on discussion board, reading material, and testsquizzes. Used discussion format improperly. It does not allow for a free flowing discussion. Steer clear of this class.
Unclear in what he expects on ridiculous blog assignments. Took in a regular semester and had 10 question quizzes over 4 chapters, study guides he provides and pushes you to review are NO help. Claims to be strict on grammar but his is horrible. I wouldn't take another one of his classes. I usually enjoy HIST... not this time.
I took his class online, it was super easy!
This class was unnecessarily hard. Though he tries to keep students interested with music and videos, he fails at holding attention himself. His voice is hard to get used to, and he spends too much time off topic. If you ask for help, he simply ignores your request. Worst class I've taken by far.
He was unclear in his lectures and had irrelevant tests. He never spoke about anything that was on his tests and he ignored those that asked questions about the lecture. He didn't know where the amazon is and made fun of students for absolutely nothing.
Online class: This class was unnecessarily hard for a History class. He will email you back but is rude when he does so. He gives our reviews but makes the questions so hard to follow that passing is difficult. I emailed him midway through the semester and was the only one in his class passing and with a 71!!!
His lectures have NOTHING to do with his tests. Makes you buy an additional book for quiz points thats worthless and not discussed in class. His exams force you to use google and even then you'll barely pass them. I barely passed his class with a C. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will never use the textbook either. Dont buy it.
I took his online course this semester and it was pretty tough at first. I emailed him and asked how would he study/prepare for his own assignments. He gave me great advice & I aced everything ever since. Just email him for help & say you want to succeed in his class & you will pass.
This was an online class but he is always sending reminders and cares a lot for his students.
I read the chapters, and took extensive notes, as well as watched videos. The study guide was helpful, but the test questions were either tricky and based on opinion, or so specific that if you didn't have the sentence from the book quoted verbatim you would get it wrong. I love history, and I know a lot about American History, but this class sucks
I definitely worked, as I took his class in a 4-week term online. The study guide and videos are a MUST. I learned a lot. I would definitely take his class during a regular term.
Took it in a Maymester, 4 exams ( drop the lowest except final) and 2 DBs. You can use the review while taking exams but just copy and paste it on your computer. Dont watch the videos he assigned because they are not on the test
The reviews here made me scared to take this class, but it was GREAT!! Four discussion boards and four tests, you are graded on content so just hit all the assignment requirements and you get 100. I got an A and I hate history!!! I also work full time. Dont be scared off by reviews, this class was an easy 4 week credit class!!
I took this class for 4 weeks & my experience was okay. I made a B in this class, however I didnt expect to read 741 pages + DBs + lecture in such little time. BE READY TO READ! & he doesnt give enough time in my opinion for the test. If you do take the 4 week class, be considerate of hours you work & other classes you take! Good luck
I learned alot in the online class. Read almost the entire book in 4 weeks. I did great on the 3 DB I did feel like he dosenr like to give 100 when they are do always gave me 98, test are hard in my opinion even if you xan use the review. I think its was beacuae it was timed and he only gives you one question at a time and you CAN NOT SKIP &go back
I made an A, but I definitely had to work harder than in other online courses. The discussion boards are more thoughtful in their content, and he actually reads the responses. He says only use notes for tests, but there is not a way fo him to monitor that. The tests take the full time to complete and are not just multiple choice.
Dr. Smant provided the exact amount of communication needed for the course. Approx. 2 emails a week with reminders & tips for passing test. There was about 4 chapters of reading, 1 discussion post, 2 responses, and a test due every week. I'll honestly say that I did not do ALL (but most) of the reading and still passed with a B.
This class was super easy online. There was only two assignments per unit, a discussion board and the test. The discussion board did require research and thought, but they were easily completed in two hours max. The tests were a breeze, as most of the questions could either be found on Quizlet or Lumen. He gave lots of tips and reminders via email.
He's super slow to grade! I wasn't able to use his comments to improve like he asked because he would submit the grade (and comments) well after the next paper was due, and the comments he did give were often very vague. Otherwise, he was very average.
Professor Smant is a communicator. He is clear in his expectations and how much work/time is spent on an assignment. The sections are easy if you do the work. He incorporates videos and even allows for a comparison of History to now, which I found more relevant to life today. I would absolutely take this professor again.
I ABSOULUTELY LOVED HIS CLASSES, HE MAKES YOU LOOK AT HISTORY IN DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES. TOTALLY WOULD TAKE HIS CLASSES AGAIN!!!
Stay away! I am a 4.0 student and this was HARD. Tests are 100 questions, with not enough time and difficult to answer (tricky), no matter how much effort I put into the discussion boards, Dr. Smant always had negative feedback and never gave me a decent grade. I had to do ALL extra credit to barely get a B. Please take someone else, I wish I had!
Professor Smant was a super easy professor. He keeps the assignments simple so you can focus more on the quality of your work. I had him for an accelerated course and only had 4 discussion boards and 4 tests. The tests are timed but they are open notes! This class is an easy A! Use the textbook review questions to help you study! Take this class!!!
I took a 4 week online course, we had 4 DB and 4 tests. Lowest of the first 3 tests is dropped. Tough grader on the DB, wants you to be extremely specific. Provides 4-6 videos per module, about an hour long each that don't have a lot to do with whats on the tests. Not bad teacher overall, easy to get a hold of through email
Tests were 50-60 questions with only 60 minutes for the test. They are open book but not a lot of time to help find answers, you'd be better off studying. Questions on tests are trick questions, worded slightly different from book but in a way that changes what the answer would be, but doesnt change the answer choices to match
i took professor smant for a 4 week online course this November and at first i thought it was going to be hard due to all the work and the way he explained this seemed like a lot but overall it was pretty easy you just have to take your time and truly do the work. i would def take him again and you should too!
Amazing instructor! I took him for 4 weeks course. Each week you have a discussion board and a test.
I had him for an 8-week course, and he was a great teacher. The workload was very manageable — a discussion board and two replies every other week. On the weeks without discussions, there was usually a quiz with about 50–70 questions, but they were very passable and there was no lockdown browser. He gives helpful feedback that helped me improve.
