He was pretty hard, his test were very hard. He gave two book assignments that made the class alot harder than it needed to be. I'd say pass up on him, and take someone esle. He is a forsure B though
This teacher is very nice & fun to listen to. He shows clips of movies every class. There are 2 reading assignments which are given, but they aren't hard & the books are actually interesting. I would HIGHLY recommend that you buy & read the text book or you wont get an "A". I loved this class so much that I took HIST 1312 with him again!
Really great class. Watch a video clip every class, and have 3 book assignments. The textbook for the class was never used, so you don't need to buy it. There are two take home tests and two take home book assignments that are really easy. This class was so interesting and an easy A. I would definitely take him.
Very good professor. He is funny and keeps class pretty interesting. You have 4 take home quizzes and two book assignments which are all fairly easy. The tests are a bit challenging, but he gives you a comprehensive review. If you study for the tests, you'll do fine. I attended about half the classes and got an A
Great professor, very easy to follow. There's only two tests, and they're both pretty easy. Also take home quizzes and book assignments .
Dr.Smant is extremely helpful. Class went by smoothly, watched some videos and listened to songs related to the subject. Attendance wasn't mandatory but he gave some extra credit for it. Test weren't bad if you folloed the review. Take home quizes and book projects were not too hard either.
good Teacher! as long as you do the take-home quiz and read the book assignments you will do great!! loved this class!
took a maymester with him; he's funny, a little hard to understand at first, but you get used to it after about the first day; tests were a little difficult; quizzes were easy, books were actually interesting to read; very understanding professor
I made an A in 1311 and I expected 1312 to be just as straightforward. Not so. To pass his essay portion you have to pick up on *exactly* what he wants written, anything else (even if its relevant to the topic, correct, and even thoughtful) and you still fail. Don't expect any real help from him.
Great Prof. Makes subject very interesting and knows what he is talking about. Took for summer, work load was tough, but had enough time to read 2 diff books, reports on them, and he gave us 2 take home exams, plus final in class exam. You have to be thorough, and read, otherwise you will not pass. Oh, and take notes!!!!TXT book is optional.
Great teacher!2 book assignments, 8 take home quizzes, midterm and final. Very easy to get an A. Gives extra credit for attendance. Gives reviews for midterm and final. Take notes.
He's a pretty straightforward teacher. You come to class and take notes on his lecture. He even writes the main points he's talking about on Word with the projector. However, you cant just copy that. You have your book lists ahead to read them. *He plays a video/song every class period pertaining to that day's subject= cool
He is really fun professor. There are two book assignments and about 8 take home quizzes. There are not that hard though. Mid -term and final are multiple choice and an essay, but he tells u the the words 2 study for and essay topic before hand.
Prof. Smant is easy if you go to class, read all the books (3 novels) and do the book assignments.(if you go to class you don't need to by the textbook) Write down all the notes he puts on the board, and use them exactly on the take home test. If you talk to him, he accepts late work. Grades assignments hard, use exactly whats in books/notes.
He's great. Clearly defines expectations. He is a tough grader. 3 books with questions. 2 take home exams, and the final is in class. Just go to class, and you don't even have to buy the book. Plays videos and songs relevant to the lesson, which is great. Awesome professor, definitely recommend.
Really nice professor, enjoyable lectures, but the tests, take-home tests, and book reports were HARD. He grades harshly. If you are a history whiz, you will LOVE this class; if not, it's going to be really difficult.
Easiest professor I've had so far. If you attend his lectures, take notes, and complete the take home quizzes (which are extremely easy), you'll be fine. His take home quizzes are directly taken from his lectures and a small portion of the answers are found in the book. There are two tests in his class and 2 reading assignments as well.
Super nice. Easy take home quizzes, a few fairly simple tests, 2 easy reading assignments (the books were actually really interesting). He used videos and music in his lectures. I never really read out of the book, just skimmed over while looking for answers to the quizzes and still made an A. He takes attendance for extra credit. Take him!
Good teacher. easy quizzes and extra credit for attendance to boost grade. tests are easy just go over the notes n skim the topics taught in book. Got A from reading night before the tests. books are interesting
I wouldn't recommend this reacher what so ever
For someone who does not like history at all I sure did find myself really enjoying this class. His lectures are great, taking notes is a must. Read the book for quiz answers. Test are on notes and book so attendance is a must but if you do all that the class is easy to pass.
Great professor. Gives extra points for attendance. Take good notes on lectures. He is pretty clear about what he expects and is very funny. I enjoyed his class. It isn't an easy class but if you turn in all your assignments on time and study, you will do just fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I studied for several weeks before his tests and went to the TA and I still struggled. Only a final and midterm and they're both long with hard questions. Could have several answers when he's looking for a specific one. Not all material was covered in class. Lectures are long and lots of info. Good luck!
Good professor. Covers the material. All multiple choice exams. Kind of hard.
Professor Smant is a great teacher. Though his test are fairly difficult, I learned very well from him. He actually care unlike other professors, he sends out emails of advice to help you with upcoming test. You actually have to go to class to do well, and you can't just copy paste the question on google to find them for the test.
Best for HIST 1311 & 1312. I did not like history until I had Dr. Smant for 1311. He made it fun so I decided to take him for 1312. He does online everything!(test, quiz, assignments). although he doesnt take attendance his lectures are very important to attend for answers to test and quiz questions. TAKE NOTES AND READ ASSIGNMENTS & YOU'LL GET AN A.
Great teacher lots of videos in class and keeper the class interesting
Smant is a very good professor. All assignments are online and he gives you time to finish them. It's best to always go to class because he makes the lectures interesting and the lecture notes help a lot during exams
Very hard. Do not take his class. He quizzes and the lectures. Should not be this difficult for a core class. His tests are hard, and its very difficult to decide what answer he is looking for.
I have to say that this class is way too strict for a history class. The tests are extremely tough and some questions aren't even from class! Avoid this professor at all cost! I STRONGLY recommend that for any history classes to take David M Watry, I have heard from peers that he is hands down the best history professor at UTA.
He is an awesome professor! You use 1 book besides your textbook & I recommend that you read them both. Every assignment is online; there's online quizzes, book assignments, tests, & a final exam. He teaches with YouTube videos & other online videos . This class was awesome & I learned a lot about history after 1865. :D
Dr Smant is a great professor. He incorporates videos and music clips into his lectures so they will be more interesting and less boring. Overall the assignments were pretty straightforward and somewhat easy. You have 2 book assignments, 10 quizzes, and 4 tests (one of those including the final). I would recommend him to students who need a history
At first its hard to understand him because his minor speech impairment, but you adjust. He's a nice man; lectures are extremely long and detailed but they are interesting. Unfortunately even though tests are online they're quite hard and often contain questions outside the spectrum of any lecture or textbook. I would just say go to class.
Dr. Smant is a good guy and the class started off great for me, but if you plan on skipping class I wouldn't recommend this professor. Definitely not an easy A even with online test. The online tests are unnecessarily hard and you really need to know the material if you want to get an A
This class is deceptively hard. The tests are online so you can use your notes but good luck. I'm naturally bad at history so I knew I would have to work my butt off, but even that wasn't enough. I've never been in danger of failing a class but I am absolutely in danger of failing this one. Take the best notes you possibly can.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! I thought it would be easy bc the tests are online I WAS WRONG. The tests are SO hard and they're timed. NOT TO MENTION each question is on its own page so there is NO GOING BACK AND CHECKING YOUR WORK OR CHANGING PREVIOUS ANSWERS (not like you would have time) 50min for 54 ? test is WAYY stressful. It's a literal joke
His tests are online and timed, each question is on its own page so there is no going back and checking your work or changing answers. You do not get 1hr 20 (class time) to take the test, the times vary depending on the number of questions he puts on it. Some questions are unclear and were not even covered in class or in the text! DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Punitive, Tedious, and Boring. He is the only class I know that make history feel like a trite matter. More obsessed with screwing you over in the weekly online testsminiteststests on a book because of "Google". (Yep...) Ironically he is the worst user of technology that I know. He uses Word instead of Powerpoint... Show videos, with ads...
This class was horrible! Do not take it!! Tests were harder than my Calculus tests. Tests are online but they are very tricky; If you want to get an A in this class, go to every lecture, read the book, and pray that his effin tests are not confusing like always.
Smant is fantastic, but for his tests, you absolutely HAVE to study. Not just the study questions online, but the book, the lectures, everything.
His lectures are amazing, only one of 2 professors I have had so far that doesn't make me want to claw my eyeballs out with icepicks and everything is online. HOWEVER, he writes his own tests so don't bother thinking google will help--it won't. Go to class, don't miss evenONE LECTURE AND TAKE GREAT NOTES AND I PROMISE YOU WILL GET AN A+
in his syllabus he says all exams are based on his lectures , not so and you cant understand a thing that he s saying due to a disability in speech . the questions on the exams are well ?? unorganized required reading a novel and test on it .all exams are on line . he never ask any one if they have questions walks in lectures then walks out
Dr. Smant is a good professor. However, his lectures are the lifeline of the class. If you don't make it to class don't expect a good grade. His test are pretty easy and you can doing from home. I would say google is your best friend. However, he does assign readings from a novel and those test are all his own. show up to class and study .
Dr. Smant is an amazing teacher. All of his test and quizzes are lecture based but luckily they're online. He's a funny guy and his passionate about what he does, taking notes is key. An A isn't easy but with hard work it's achievable.
Smant is a good lecturer, I found his lectures to be fun and involving, though a lot of his lectures include long historical videos. You have to go to his class, he doesn't post lecture notes online and he almost never gets his questions from the books, they are all from his lectures.
I took him for HIST 1311 and 1312 and as a bio major who has never enjoyed history, I truly loved his class. I had him for an 8AM and actually looked forward to his class. He was incredibly entertaining and passionate about history. He does have a bit of a speech impediment but was easier to understand than most professors at uta. 10/10 great class
Awesome teacher. Tests come almost completely from lecture notes. Lectures can be boring, but he gives you everything you need. A lesson before dying was a good read also. Both the lecture and the lesson before dying tests were pretty straightforward. Easy A if you pay attention!
He's very test heavy and will have random facts on the test that weren't in the book or in his lectures.
Professor Smant is the perfect example of: don't judge a book by its cover. At first I was nervous that I would have difficulty understanding him due to a minor speech impediment. However, I was so wrong. He makes the lectures and history in general so interesting and easy to understand. Beware you must go to every class in order to pass his tests.
I absolutely love Dr. Smant. I plan on taking him again for 1302 if possible. When I first met him, to be honest, I thought he was there to fix the computer. When he opened his mouth and started lecturing I thought, "How will i ever understand this guy?!" But I was soooo wrong! He is the sweetest man and such an inspiration.
Don't take this professor. His lectures are frustrating to listen to; he assumes that you hold the most shallow, base understanding of the world. But the tests are absurdly hard/don't make sense. Once there was an answer choice that said "we were willing to help the British but unwilling to do so." I usually make As but this class was so annoying.
Dr. Smant is super nice, but I would only recommend him to history majors. As a non-history major, this class was VERY hard to keep up with, even though previously I maintained a 3.8 GPA. Go to class, read ALL the readings, take VERY DETAILED notes.
All of the grades are from tests and or a book quiz. The reviews that are provided do not help with the quizzes. The tests are based on the lecture. His lectures are all on slideshows that he makes which doesn't really keep your attention very well. He would show videos in class that weren't even on the quizzes
Test were supposedly lecture based but only the multiple answer ones were from lecture. The rest of the questions were pulled from the internet. (but the answers are hard to find) I got 70's on all the test, even though I went to every class and took notes. Really disappointing. Reviews didn't correlate with test either. Frustrating class.
His lectures are pretty funny and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. His lectures are pretty fast paced, so make sure you're ready to take notes as soon as the class starts
His class is very easy to pass as long as you show up and take lots of notes. His lecture are pretty enjoyable, he makes lots of jokes and has videos to enhance the lecture. His tests are usually straight-forward and are basically just what he says in class. There are 6 tests and 3 quizzes in the class that are ALL online, so its an easy A.
I'm going to miss having this class. I recommend taking notes on your laptop and sitting closer to the front to not miss anything. There are 5 exams, 3 book quizzes, and a final (that is not cumulative). Professor Smant is very nice, and he adds in a few good laughs. All of the topics/lectures flow together smoothly. I'm taking him next semester.
Hes really funny and he puts up videos during his lectures. Hes a little difficult to understand sometimes I loved his class, he is lecture heavy on his tests so if you skip lecture you'll not do good on the tests, all the tests are online and he is not flexible on the due dates. Hes a wonderful professor, 10/10 would recommend
tests are too tough. do not skip class.
He has online exams only and are open note but every exam has a different poll of questions. It is not fair because I may know questions from other student's exam and mine were harder. Fill in the blank, hypothetical questions
He has online exams which wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that every test doesn't correlate to the chapter you're supposed to read in the assigned book; and barely follows the lecture itself. Along with the fact that his lecture is literally five words on a word document that he scrolls down every five minuets, while rambling about whist
If you are not there for class, you will not pass. So far, my tests have not followed the syllabus at all. His questions on his test are very difficult to understand. His "powerpoints" are Microsoft Word documents that he scrolls down, so it is hard to stay focused. Does show videos in class though. It is hard for a core class. Would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE! I took it online and every week there is a quiz, and total of 4 discussions. We have to read, watch lots of videos. Everything is Chicago or Turabian style. HE IS A REALLY TOUGH GRADER. VERY HARD TO PLEASE! ESSAY prompts are so confusing. He does do exams, but his essays are very difficult!
Dr. Smant is by no means an easy professor. He has weekly quizzes, lots of reading, and 2 lengthy essays. If you want an A, it's possible, but you definitely have to work for it. I barely pulled out an A after his generous extra credit quiz, which was easy and gave me just enough points for an A.
The online class is NOT easy and requires A LOT of writing!! But, all of the information is in the textbook and lecture slides. He is always available by email and responds quickly. He does go out of his way to explain assignments that may be confusing.
I took his class online, it is rather intense for such a basic level class. The only grades in the class are discussion boards and essays. The discussion boards are supposed to be formatted like a real essay so the only think you do in this class is basically write. His grading is extremely hard, if you do one thing wrong your grade drops.
So i took this class online and everything is just so extra. Literally all of your grades are essay based, theres no tests. Be ready to read. There isnt enough time in between assignments that are due, and he isnt very concerned if you have stuff out of your control. If you take him for this class be prepared to work and try to get ahead.
Main grades are based on essays. VERY extra for a basic class, he has a certain way he wants essays formatted/cited and cares a lot about detail/explaining. Pay attention to feedback, he helps you understand how to improve with his comments. Towards the end, I learned how to write but not exactly my cup of tea.
Took this online and regret it. This professor grades hard. A lot of thought has to go into each discussion and essay or you won't even get a B in the class. He grades the midterm the hardest, and his discussions have to be like mini essays with a minimum of 2-3 sources each. Take this class with caution. Unless you have tons of free time...
I took the online course and it was a LOT of writing!! He does explain what is expected and offers hints as well. Be prepared for a lot of reading as well!! This is a very time intensive class for an online class! He is a tough grader, but he also gives great feedback!! He responds quickly to emails and sends reminder emails when assignments due.
took him for summer online. Pretty easy, just video discussions and untests. video discussions are quite long but not too bad just comment A LOT (15-20). u have to make ur own (4)tests (4 mc, 2 connections, 1 ID, overall takeaway) honestly not difficult at all. it's easier than taking a real test. just read instructions carefully. good luck :)
The class gives me stress & has brought back my anxiety attacks. Compared to the 2000 & 3000 lvl classes I'm taking for my major this semester, this class has been the most difficult for me. The professor is super passionate about what he's teaching and I respect that, but I just don't get the untests. I'd much rather take a test instead.
Very harsh grader. Ive always been an A/B student but even with my best effort I seemed to fail.
Learn from my mistake and don't take this class if you don't have a lot of time or energy. A passionate guy about the material but he grades in a way that makes no sense. Doesn't give tests but he gives something that he calls "Untest" smh.
If you know what's good for you then don't take him!!! He really does the ABSOLUTE MOST for a basic level History course. There is a lot of homework, it is time consuming but doable and helps your grade. He grades the "untest" very unfairly. No matter how much effort I put into the untest's, it was never good enough for him.
He has something called untests, he himself does not grade the papers he delegates this to someone else, the grading is very harsh and feedback is very poor on the untests, you can pass because of participation but the untests are from hell itself. For example my feedback was that "I had too much information" on WWII. Just stay away
I had Dr Smant this semester and last semester for history 1301 and 1302. If you really want to analysis history and have your papers dissected like an autopsy this is a great class for you! This class is not for you if you're not ready spend at least eight hours a week on his class and still barely get by!
He asks for so much for a intro history class. He asks for so much but there is barely any lectures and it's not even made by him. It's basically self taught course and unless you love history and you love analyzing everything you won't enjoy this course. I asked for extra credit and he said no as well as a bump. Takes forever to respond to emails.
this class is just untest and those online discussions like every other class but he literally grades like its a senior level class or something. He takes off points for comment on videos if theyre not insightful enough and grades untest like theyre thesis papers i passed all english courses with A+ but according to him im not any good
He grades Untests like they are senior-level thesis papers. He rarely gives 100's so if you don't want to put the work in take any other professor.
I had more essays in his class than my English class. Each "untest" is like at least 2,500 word essay but he DOES NOT make that clear. His "untest" are expected to be analyzed and not summarized material - in other words, he expects y'all to be history majors and travel back in time and write your experience. Expect at least a C on the papers.
Course and topics are easy and fun. The professor really wants a "PERFECT" paper. His grading is harsh. Untest is a very useful system for learning the subjects, but the professor makes it difficult. If you take this course from another professor, you can pass the course more easily. Pros: dropped the lowest untest and homework. No curve.
HIST 1301 with Smant is awful. I am currently a Senior taking this class because I dread history and put it off for such a long time. I have to say this class has the most busy work, the most useless homework assignments, and Smant is an incredibly hard grader on essays. The class is a complete joke for a 1000 level history class. DO NOT TAKE
His exams are "untests" AKA essays. He grades his essays extremely tough. If you do the work, you'll pass but don't expect a high grade which is really frustrating. This was an online class and he has no interaction with the students outside of grading them and giving insulting feedback. No way would I recommend this "teacher" at all.
Participation assignments in this course are not thoroughly checked for completion or accuracy, so that should not be an issue. Untests are graded strictly, but the professor provides VERY valuable feedback! Take advantage of that! He is expecting a LOT of detail and evidence in the untests. Manage your time, and don't slack off on untests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. This class had a lot of homework with a lot of reading. It felt like busy work and instead of tests we had Untests. Untests are papers and he graded them ridiculously. I took this class online, which means emails are important. He would take forever to get back to me so there was no way to reach him.
Everything was fine until the socalled untests start. The grading is completely nonsense. You can try as hard as you want he will still give you very low marks on these untests which count for 30 percent of the grade. He has been giving me half points 50's on these so if i do everything else perfectly the highest grade i can get will be 85 overall
I would say that its actually not a bad class, just do the participation things that are easy honestly. The untests or essays are easy, you just have to follow his criteria to the T! He is very strict on grading, gives good feedback though. I passed the class with a B so I guess I did alright.
Really strict grader.
Taking the course online and don't have as many assignments as in the previous comments. However, he expects you to read a lot and is a very tough grader. Posts month-long discussions where you constantly have to be active. Cool professor overall that gives good feedback, but would personally take someone else.
Our whole grade is based on 3 month long discussion posts, 14 readings and our final essay. Super harsh grader. You would get a 60 on the discussion posts if you only participate once, a 70 if you participate on two days. Each discussion post is basically writing a mini essay.
He grades really hard you would think you submitted an A level discussion board and having 20 replies is enough but it is never enough no one gets 100s average Grades would be 50s. you have to be specific when writing he is very pickyyyyyyyy!!!take his feedback seriously to get better in the course
Would not recommend this professor if you want to take the easy way out. Very TOUGH grader. There is no perfect essay or discussion in his eyes. There will be something in your essay that will be wrong and he will take a huge chunk of points off.
I don't think Dr Smant knows that a school week starts on a Monday, and not a Friday. I am taking 3 online classes in 5 weeks, and I work double shifts on weekends. I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO DO WRITING ASSIGNMENTS OVER WEEKENDS. To get an A for any of these assignments you need to complete it 1day after it is assigned and engage in discussions daily.
One thing I have noticed is that Smant doesn't give A's for papers ever. Even if you go by the rubric, he'll make up criteria on the spot, and when you do exactly what he asks for he'll give you a B. When he gives you a second attempt to get an A, he grades it as late and gives you a lower grade. I now see why people call him an unfair grader.
SMANT is the most unfair grader ever. For our signature essay I used 3 of the primary sources HE TOLD ME TO USE. On his feedback notes he even confirmed which sources I should use for the essay. He then graded me a 66 for using those sources. 0 Explanation when I asked why. This professor tells you how to succeed, and then fails you for doing it!!
I usually never leave negative reviews, Smant is the exception. Smant is just one of those glass half empty people, looking for reasons to tell you why your essays aren't good. In his feedback he tells you where to find primary sources in the textbook. He will purposely give you bad grades for using those sources. Homework is unbearable
Dr. Smant expects you to have an advanced historian mindset, although this is an entry-level History course. No tests, but tons of papers. Even a simple discussion board is workload-heavy as it requires a full 3-point paragraph referring to multiple sources and engagement daily, asking others questions, and answering other in-depth questions.
I consider myself a very lazy person but this class actually got me out of my habits because I was forced to participate. I would encourage people to take this class because it motivated me to do better even though it was tough. At the beginning, I contemplated on dropping the course but im glad I didnt because I ended up getting an A.
I felt like I needed to bring this up because Dr Smant is extremely unfair when grading. I emailed him back and forth about a paper because he said I lack originality, and when I used HIS feedback to finish it he told me I overcomplicated the assignment. Then for a different paper he accused me of using ChatGPT because my ideas were "too original".
If I was able to speak on this professor and the issues he has in his grading, assignments, and communication, I would be here all day. This class requires so much effort to the point of near burnout and I would highly recommend not taking him. By far the worst professor I have ever taken and took the fun of learning history out of me.
dont take him. this is more of a english class than a history class.
he literally makes you write essays in a history class. you will end up learning more about writing than history and to make matters worse you cant use any resoucres to help you everything you write has to be from the readings he sends. he wants everything to be exactly how he says. if you did it correct but not how he wants he will give you a 0.
I usually don't write reviews for professors, but this one I will. The workload was not that bad, but the criteria was not it. Because wdym I have to go back to a discussion board every day to get an A for it. Mind you this was the introducing yourself discussion board assignment. Please if you love yourself DON'T TAKE THIS MAN CLASS.
By all means when I say DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS with this man actually DO NOT. I had to withdraw at the beginning of the semester because the amount of work that this professor had me doing for simple discussion boards was too much that I could not focus on my other classes as a Biochemistry major. I recommend taking this class at TCC!!
If you think you did something right, think again because no matter what you do in this class IT WILL BE WRONG!!! He wants you to use the primary sources that is provided yet HE STILL SAYS ITS WRONG!! I WAS USING THE PRIMARY SOURCES HE TOLD ME TO USE. I ended up getting a 52 on my final essay because of this. Awful grader!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! This is the worst class I have ever taken. You have to put a lot of work for just a simple history class. Plus his grading is the worst. You will not get good grades even if you follow his comments and instructions, he will find a way to cut points.
I've NEVER left a review on any professor, but avoid this man. His rubrics and grading criteria don't mean ANYTHING. Not only does he not follow his own rubrics he also isn't very clear in them either. when the average grade for most writing assignments in is in the 60s in a HISTORY class, there's clearly a teaching issue here. HARSH grading.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, AT ALL. Any other professor is better then him. I woke up every day dreading dealing with this professor. He made us go back to our discussion posts daily just to earn an A, yet he never followed his own rubric. I followed every requirement exactly, but he still said it was wrong and nothing I did was ever enough.
Gives lots of homework and grading criteria is very bad. Wants you to talk in discussion posts for a whole week everyday in order to get full credit but there only three posts each day except for the last two. You can do every assignment well and still barely scratch a B and his grading on the final paper is so strict, how is the average a 50?
i didn't enjoy this class due to specific tactics of the professor. he grades harshly but gives feedback (sometimes helpful sometimes just restating the rubric?) i 10000% recommend taking another teacher if possible! 3/10 for this
