Okay teacher, he will overwhelm you with those crazy powerpoint presentations, that is full of info he will tell you that you don't need to know. Lots of electronic coursepacks. The classes are easy if you have a friend to work on the test with, and can get the wrtings from

Despite the many cheaters, this professor's classes are off the hook
Best teacher I have ever had.. Kevin deserves the "red chili" CSUCI is lucky to have him
This was the most disorganized class I have ever had. He even had a TA and it was still confusing. Even though some people cheated he blamed the whole class. I spent about a week studying for the midterm and I did terrible, as well as the rest of the class. I do not recommend this class!! Red chilly pepper my ass!!!!
Was probably one fo the worst classes I have ever had. A couple people cheated and then he had it out for the whole class. I do not recommend this class!!!
THIS CLASS JUST PLAIN SUCK!!!!! I BUSTED MY ASS AND GOT A C!
This class was boring and organized. I got a B+ and I never went to class. All I have to say is that he just needs to assign a book instead of those dry reading off of the internet. Dr. Volkan is nice but I would not want to take any of his classes.

Volkan is a great teacher and really knows his stuff!
Kick ass Volkan can i say more?
I learned a lot from his class, Volkan is a great teacher, very kind and seems to have a real passion for teaching.
Volkan's Great!! I love his style of teaching. Also an amazing martial artist. Looking forward to more of his classes.
This professor is so incredibly interesting. He has experienced so much in his lifetime and is willing to share his wisdom. Inredibly educated (numerous doctorates) and humble about it. Great teacher. really understanding.
The class was okay. I think he needs to revamp the class to make it more exciting. This is obviously a subject he is really interested in and expects the rest of the class to be as well. The information given also needs to be narrowed down!

BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class rocks! Dr. Volkan is the most interesting teacher I have had here. My only wish is that this was a small class instead of the giant lecture format. You won't be disappointed with this class.
volkan is a great teacher with a ton of knowledge about asian tradition and thought. easy to listen to, encourages questions, lots of good stories about his own experiences, and really helps you look at the world from a new perspective.
Really nice professor who knows a lot about the subject, the class is pretty simple, readings and lecture notes are all online, class does get slightly dull at times due to lengthy powerpoint presentations, but otherwise good class!
Drs Volkan and Sawyer rock! They both are really cool professors but together they bring so much knowledge to our class.I really do feel like I am in graduate school when they talk. Our assignments in class and research allow the student to have the graduate school experience while still an undergraduate.Take them separately or together, but take them
Loved this class - great teachers. A real interactive experience!
awesome class with great info. check out the JDK demo!
Cool professor - opened me up to new ways of seeing things. Takes time to answer questions. Uses multiple choice tests which are easy if you do the reading and show up to class. Highly recommended!
Wonderful instructor- really takes time to answer student questions. Easy multiple choice tests. A great class though the readins can be a little dry.
Awesome instructor! Clear in his presentations and interesting to listen to.
Passing resemblance to Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips. Good teacher, too.
great class!
Amazing class, Volkan is one of the coolest teachers I know. Brilliant!
It's easy to do well in this class if you show up. Tons of reading and most of it is good to keep if you're interested in further study. He's approachable, fair and encourages students to reach as high as they can to be successful. (Oh, yeah, he doesn't like when people cheat.)
Liked this class a lot - he really doesn't like cheaters! Easy to get an A if you show up and do the reading.
He is a good and funny teacher, at least the 3 classes I went to he was. No book, all the slides are on Blackboard, doesnt take attendance, but does daily journals. Cool teacher, he also happens to be the head of the psych department, really laid back guy.
He's a great guy, helpful and enthusiastic about his subject. Definitely wants his students to pass. I've taken 2 classes from him and would recommend anything he is teaching!
no text book, just gave ALOT of readings. NO paper, NO final, NO midterm. Just weekly quizzes made up of 5 questions worth 10 points each. Ur total of that is ur grade. REAL interesting class! LOVE THIS GUY!!
Friendly, approachable, knowledgable
The class is extremely interesting. There are weekly quizzes, that ultimately become your grade in the class. The quizzes are easy as long as you are attending class. If you like to skip classes, as easy as this class is, do not take it. Great professor, nice and interesting guy.
AMAZING teacher! Highly recommend taking the classes he teaches with Buschmann. Very fair grading system and interesting classes! Nazi Germany class was great and Asian Warrior cultures too.
a good teacher, with a lot of knowledge. I don't know if this semester was wierd. Buschmann did not get very involved. All we learned about was martial arts. No Psychology. Very little history. Asain warrior cultures are more than martial arts. In class quizzes would have been better. Each class felt like a waste of my time. Very disappointing.
Teaches the most interesting classes in Psychology.
Awesome class! Awesome professor!
Interesting class with one of the best professors at CSUCI! The subjects in this class are off the hook. Great guest lectures too
awesomest class ever.
Is it wrong to be completely attracted to your professor even if they're not the sex you are attracted to? Volkan is amazing, listen to his lectures skim the book and you'll be fine. Great guy, very helpful. I try to take all the classes I can with him, not only for the amazingness of his being, but also because he's nice eye candy ;)
Dr.Volkan made History and Systems bearable and actually interesting with his side tangents. His approach is casual; also he makes us each present a chapter (at least for summer). Great teacher!
take this class. it fulfills 3 requirements for psych majors. easy class. no textbook. weekly reading reflections from in class guest speakers or from reading. offers EC. only an online midterm and final. both mult choice and only 45 q's. if you go to class and read through the powerpts you will do good on the tests
Great professor with very interesting subject matter. Classes fulfill important slots for Psych majors. All test online, open notes/book. Come to class, take your notes and get an A. You might learn something too. Highly recommend this professor.
Pretty basic class. Didnt actually learn anything I could take out of the classroom. The whole grade is based on 10 quizzes worth 10pts each (100 pts) so if you miss 1 or 2 questions on the quizzes, cant get an A. Gives a ridiculous amount of readings that may/may not be on the quiz- One week we had 15 readings, not one question was on the quiz..
Forgot to mention, MUST go to class. The quizzes are totally based on lecture material which is NOT on the powerpoint. So yes, class = MANDATORY! Syllabus isn't clear either so dont count on referring to that.. Goes on tangents frequently. Most people are just on their cell phones all of class.
473 is a class titled "Bizarre Behaviors & Culture Bound Syndromes." That being said, whoever posted that this is something they wont take out of class apparently has no desire to work with anyone not like him. Interesting topics that do hold relevance. No txtbooks specifically to save students money, rather free articles. Highly recommend!
Volkan is the most interesting professor at CI & the ONLY one with big enough balls to get up in front of a packed auditorium to demonstrate to us ancient warrior fighting methods. He's EVERYONES favorite professor bc he turns drab history into an interactive realtime experience. Classes are always exciting! (But you have to COME TO CLASS!)
He is the best professor at CSUCI. I just love him. He's smart and very helpful. Plus, all his classes are interesting.
A teacher you want to hangout with. Can tell he has had lots of experience/knows lots about psychology. Hes fair.
Volkan is an amazing professor who tells you about his real life experiences so you learn from him. Not only does he know the material, he is a great mentor. I recommend bouncing ideas off of him for graduate school! Pay attention in class and it is hard to not get an A
Awesome professor! Keeps the class interesting and informational. I thought he did an amazing job. I was always excited to go to class. He was able to present information that made it easy for you to understand. If you don't understand something he seems more then happy to answer any questions you have and discuss any opinions.
One of the 12 founding faculty of CSUCI. Is married to a lawyer who teaches in the MBA/MS Biotechnology joint degree program. Has great charisma and considerable clout, and ran a practical class for both Psychology majors and others such as myself. It was a great class because there was not too much work and there were no necessary textbooks.
I love this teacher! He's so down to earth, and amazing. Smart and loves to share the stories of his life in asian countries, and of the cultures there. Fascinating, never boring, and he invites guest speakers that do Chinese medicine presentations like yoga, cupping, acupuncture etc. Loved this class! He's an amazing professor! Take him!
Great teacher! Ten easy/short reaction papers. Two online tests. No presentations or group work :)
Three online exams, which he drops the lowest test score. One essay. No presentations. Interesting class!
So chill. So informative. Best psychology professor at CI, in my opinion.
Sat through 4.5 hours with ease. Really good speaker, makes material make sense and if not - will make a believer out of you. Got my money's worth! A huge compliment to this prof!
Volkan loves what he's teaching so it makes the students interested in it too. He's very laid back just make sure you keep up on your readings and refelction papers and the class will be easy ! The only thing that sucks is that all of his lectures are 3 hours long and only on Fridays. So, if you can endure that then go for it!
There are three tests he drops the lowest a couple points for extra credit, one final paper ''Biography'' The only thing I found difficult with this class was all the readings be prepared to read and read since he has no textbook would be better if he had a textbook....
Psych 436 was a somewhat interesting class i found it hard to get into because martial arts history not my thing there 3 tests drops lowest one final paper 3points for extra credit no textbook but a ton ton of readings get ready to read if your taking his class and you have to go to lectures if you want to pass his tests they are important!
Volkan is a really good teacher. He's very clear and his powerpoints are informative and humorous. His classes are incredibly easy. Just show up, take the daily quiz (which is easy), and you got it. I was incredibly interested in Bizarre Psych, it was the coolest class I've taken yet. He talks about his Hollywood connects once in awhile. NO BOOK!!!
Dr. Volkan is the man. He's respectful, an awesome lecturer, and knows his stuff. His classes will challenge you but not to excess. I really look up to this professor and would definitely recommend him.
I really enjoyed Dr. Volkan's Bizarre Behavior class and the material I learned in his class overlapped into my other psych classes. It's definitely interesting material and not a class for close minded or prudish individuals. Class consisted of 13 quizzes, 10 questions each. He's highly intelligent and knowledgeable about psychology, take him!
Dr. Volkan is amazing!! I enrolled in the class and expected it to not be a favorite or to really enjoy it, but it's one of my top classes I've taken so far. He is engaging and has this amazing story-telling quality about it that holds your interest. Even though the lectures are Fridays 9am-12, it is worth it because he is so fascinating.
Dr. Volkan is an outstanding professor. He's not an easy "A" but it's doable if you put in time and read. The tests are tough but if you take reading notes and lecture notes you'll be fine.
Professor Volkan is one of the few good things about CSUCI. His lectures are amazing, he's incredibly helpful and genuinely a really cool, nice person.
Do not take traditional asian thought. It was horrible -- no book only lecture but he went off on tangents and forgot that we've never heard of most of the info before. Acted like we were experts just like he was and gave us no way to revisit the material. Test ?s nowhere in notes. For other classes he's great but this one was unbearable
Dr. Volkan and Dr. Buchman are great people, but as a psychology major I felt I was in more of an advanced history course. Tests are incredibly hard. Does not review prior to tests and tests have material not covered in class or in the book.
I had Dr. Volkan for T Asian Thought and his bizarre behavior I loved these classes. Lecture is a must since there really isn't a book really. Read and write well in TAT and you'll be fine. B.B. was really easy if you go to the lectures and remember what he says. Very laid back and always willing to talk more. He is incredibly smart! Ask questions!
Dr. Volkan is super laid back and chill, except when it comes to his tests. His tests are HARD and are based off of the verbal lectures he gives, some answers from powerpoints. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS to do well on his tests. 3 tests but drops the lowest and one paper your grade.
Grading is one percent per a homework assignment. Then there are 2 test worth each 45%. Yet a 65% is a C. The material is cool to listen too.
I love Professor Kevin Volkan. He is really laid back, always nice, cool and calm. The class is inspirational. It opens eyes for many in different aspects. I am very fascinated by Asian religion and philosophy so I am so glad I took the class. Thank you for being such a nice person then a great professor.
Took him because I needed a class last minute. 2 test total they are online and they are extremely difficult he is a nice guy but his test are hard. If you don't have to take him please don't.
Had Volkan for FOUR classes because he's an easy A - funny guy but I'm not into his material or style at all. He's a hardcore Freudian.
Volkan's PSY 344 class consisted of 2 tests and a whole bunch of 600 word papers. The papers are easy, but the tests are pretty much what count. He is very passionate about Asian Psy, but sometimes he gets off topic. The tests are hard... just study and read all of the readings he assigns online.
I really like his teaching style. Really interesting dude.
Dr. Volkan is very passionate about his lectures. He is understanding and fair, and only grades you on quizzes that he gives at the beginning of class. He cares more about learning then he does about busy work. He also takes the time to help students outside of class. This is by far my favorite class at Channel Islands and I highly recommend it.
Bizarre Behavior and Culture Bound Syndrome with Dr. Volkan was my favorite class this semester. His class is more like a seminar than a typical lecture, where there is a lot of student interaction that Dr. Volkan facilitates while learning about the strange and bizarre. If you get squeamish and/or unsettled easily, do not take; otherwise enjoy!
Professor Volkan's psy 317 lectures will capture your attention and make it easy to maintain a focus on class material. He is very patient even when questions are off track, but he shows genuine appreciation for well thought out questions that truly give thought to the topic. Love his teaching style. He is a great resource and easy to talk to.
Dr. Volkan is a great lecturer and has lots of interesting material to present that really makes you think. This course is great for anyone wanting to learn more about behaviors outside of the norm.
Professor Volkan set me up with an internship for this class which I eventually got hired with and still continue to work for. He is very caring and will help you not only with paper feedback but grad school and any other subjects you'd like opinions on. He is very well respected in my book.
he is an easy teacher, go to class every time and don't skip because it will bite you in the ass when its quiz time!!! class is pretty boring and easy to drift off but still worth it just take coffee and don't skip!
Warrior Cultures with Dr. Volkan and Dr. Buschmann was my favorite class this semester! His material is clear and very easy to understand, just take notes in lectures. I normally hate history classes, but this was the best I've ever taken. The four exams are online/open book, and if you complete the readings right before the exam, you'll do well.
Great Prof. Attendance not mandatory but go, lecture material will be on midterm and final. About 9, 600-word reflection papers due throughout the semester - writing them wasn't bad, rubric is provided. He provides reading material - read it, stuff from the readings will be on tests. And of course review for the tests, it helped me to pass
Excellent and exceptional lectures that are mind blowing! Dr. Volkan is truly a wonderful Professor that offers so much knowledge for those wanting to learn. His Lectures are packed with great information and I highly recommend all his classes. If psychology is your major Dr. Volkan is one of the best! All quizzes are online!
Dr. Volkan is such an amazing professor. I have had him for both traditional TAT and Nazi class and i hope to take his bizarre behavior class in the future. As long as you go to class and pay attention you will be fine. His lectures are very mind blowing . He is a very well respected and accomplished individual that CSUCI is veyr luck to have.
I've taken Dr. Volkan for PSY344 and PSY473 and I can honestly say he's one of the best professors I've ever had. His classes are lecture-heavy, but in Bizarre Behaviors especially the time flies by due to the sheer entertainment value of each class. Dr. Volkan is one of the best professors at CSUCI, don't miss the chance to take a class with him.
Attend lecture! it is how you pass. Although attendance is not graded or mandatory. Anything he lectures about is fair game on the tests. He posts PP slides to canvas if you miss but they don't replace the notes you miss in class. Although his tests are hard, if you show up and take decent notes you should pass the class no problem.
I took 370 over the summer. The worst part is that there is only 100 points in your grade. However, he does give a few opportunities for extra credit. There is a good amount of reading and videos to watch, but you can do the course at your own pace. You do a quiz each module and have an optional paper. He is very easy to contact if you need help!
This summer class is nice since you can complete it at your own pace. There are a lot of readings and lecture videos, but no more than expected. There were two exams, which were somewhat difficult but do-able. The paper is optional but you have to do it to get an A. Also, there is only 100 pts in the grade-book so you have to try hard on exams!
Took him, thought he was gonna be a fair professor. He isn't. If you don't do well on the midterm or final, you might as well take it again the next semester. Students dont have any chance to recover there grade and at least get a fair chance.
No comment. Other than, cool class if it was taught in person.
Great professor, easy class. Class was mainly on our own, at our own pace. Dr. Volkan was always there to help us with our questions and biweekly online optional meetings. 2 tests and a paper made up the entire class. He has a helpful guideline of when items should be read.
Horrible. There were 2 tests and a paper, with only 100 points in the class so if you missed even a couple points on the tests, you were stuck with an A- or B+. No live lectures and we had to teach ourselves. I expected an attempt of an in person experience & I felt that there was no effort from the professor. He was rude and unhelpful.
I learned nothing!!! You work at your own pace. He was organized but he didnt teach anything. He used power points and YouTube videos. There was 2 exams and an optional paper. No homework. Had optional meetings but they were like office hours. Exams were kind of not bad but remember to read the readings.
Prof. Volkan is a good, solid choice. I recommend taking his courses. You can tell he is very passionate about psychological thought and thinking. This course was a do it at your own pace course. Not too many assignments or quizzes. There are a few readings and papers, but nothing too extreme. The course was very organized and easy to navigate.
This class was self paced! I would recommend to stay on top of the modules and to not get behind. You have to take quizzes based off what you read/learned in the readings/lecture videos of the module. You have 8 writing assignments and they are pretty straight forward. I would Highly recommend this class.
I took this class because I have heard it was interesting. The lectures are really long and there is tons of reading, so be prepared for that. The class itself was fine but the tests were super hard for me. I am an A/B student and I barely managed a C. Good professor, hard class.
This class is currently asynchronous with recorded lectures. I strongly recommend listening to all lectures and reading required readings. Dr. Volkan is very helpful during office hours, and I recommend attending and asking him questions. This class is very straightforward if you follow what is laid out in the syllabus.
This is a great class to take that meets all 3 requirements: UDGE-D: Social Sciences, Multicultural, and Psychology Elective. Watch the lecture videos, do the online readings (no textbook required), write the reflection papers, and take advantage of extra credit. That's all! You won't regret it! You'll learn about Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc.
This course structure allows you to work at your own pace and it's straightforward. Everything you need is provided by the professors so you don't need to buy textbooks. Make sure to take notes on lectures as well as the films that you have to watch. Just be sure to stay on track so that any missed work doesn't stack up later on!
This class was very interesting tbh! Only thing that I didn't was that I could write down everything said in the lecture and I still wouldn't do great in the exams. It was difficult to get good scores on them, but other than that everything else was straightforward
Really enjoyed this class from Professor Volkan, the lectures are long but really interesting. I feel Professor Volkan is very knowledgable on this subject and makes the lectures interesting, more like telling a story rather than giving a lecture.
I've taken a few of Dr. Volkan's classes and every single one was has been incredibly interesting. The only downside is that his exam questions are highly specific and sometimes not fully discussed in the lectures, but nonetheless, it is doable and you'll learn a lot! Will definitely be taking more of his classes
I highly recommend taking Prof. Volkan for 317. There were 18 quizzes total, that's all. Do the reading, watch the lectures, and do the quizzes. You'll learn a lot. 317 can be a doozy of a course, but it's not an overwhelming course. Prioritize the quizzes before they are due. (1/2 middle of semester, 1/2 end of semester) and you'll do just fine.
Dr. Volkan organized the class to help you keep up with readings and lectures. His lectures are fascinating and not heavy, and the amount of work required for the course is perfect for allowing time for studying. I enjoyed writing my first prospectus with him since he replies to emails amazingly fast. I recommend him,
Dr.Volkan is amazing I had before and he is by far one of my favorite professors here at CSUCI. He really cares about his students. Make sure you take lots of notes on lectures. He is very good at giving feedback. Definitely would take him again.
Take Volkan's classes, you will learn so much. Professor Volkan is very knowledgeable and his course consists of quizzes and short papers. If you keep up with his lectures and readings, you will do just fine (1/2 middle of semester, 1/2 end of semester). You're basically attending his lectures from home. Make sure to take notes!
For there being 2 professors and a teacher's aid in this class I was disappointed. All of the lectures were just pictures so there was never really anything to look back to after lectures. They never gave clear instructions for extra credits, and the entire class that made up your grade is 4 tests. No supplemental assignments.
Dr. Volkan's lectures are fascinating and as I watched them I found myself constantly writing things down to look further into later. There is something special about a teacher that inspires curiosity beyond the content of the class. I appreciate Dr. Volkan's online class's flexibility, format, and clear expectations.
Dr Volkan is an excellent lecturer. I never got bored with his voice, spoke nice & clear.
Class was easy. Tests are based off lectures. If you take good notes and attend the study group its an easy A.
Professor Volkan is simply the BEST!!!! His lectures are fun and interesting. He brings in life experiences that keep us all intrigued. You get multiple choice quizzes and no final. He responded right away to emails and was eager to help with any questions I had. He is one of the most caring, and dedicated professors at CSUCI. Recommend him 100%!
Interesting material in this class.
Very easy to get into contact with and offers real life applications to the concepts covered in class. Your biggest cheerleader for grad school and doctorate degrees. He gives a lot of tips and tricks on that area. Very supportive in learning. Highly recommend his classes!
Prof. Volkan's online class is flexible and engaging. The lectures are captivating, and the workload is manageable. I found Unstuck study really helpful for preparing for the quizzes and writing assignments.
Great teacher! Very knowledgeable.
The class is really organized and the lectures are prerecorded. The textbook is really affordable and the reading was interesting. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, even an optional extra credit paper. Make sure you attend the study sessions and the tests are very reasonable if you read, watch the lectures, and study.
The lectures are heavy, pre-recorded, very long. But the paper is optional and there are 4 exams.
Loved his class! One of the easiest classes out there. 4 exams including the final, offered multiple extra credit opportunities throughout the semester, & no weekly assignments. The lectures are pre-recorded but they're super interesting! Wished they offered this class in person!
The course was well-organized, grading was fair, and he was responsive when I had questions. Overall, a smooth and straightforward class experience!
