seems hippyish, but is really understanding and is a good communicator to all. class was easy and enjoyable.
Best English class I've ever had! Very interesting and fun. There's still work to do, but Kevin makes everything easy.
Very easy course if one does the assigned readings. Very helpful! Fun class!
This is a great class! Do the assigned readings and you'll have no problem. I would highly recommend this class!
He really teaches the material quite well. He keeps a very relaxed classroom atmosphere and makes english fun.
He's interesting, smart and funny! GREAT CLASS!
Great Class!!! Always fun and interesting! Definitely recommend him.
Awesome teacher! Definitely should take him! Makes literature fun and interesting, I want to read, yay!!!
This is probably the nicest guy in Tuscaloosa. Starts every class with "how ya'll doin?" Whatever you say, he will never tell you that you are wrong. Ex. "I think the sky is red." he would say, "Ok. Yea. I see where your coming from. The sky probably appears that way because the crimson tide won last week. Any other lexicons for the word red?"
great teacher. loved his class. definitely recommend him. the class is split into three sections: definition of "cool", food, and representation of place. class was entertaining most of the time; he really cares about his students writing and wants you to improve.
He's good
Funny. Smart. Helpful! Waltman is by far my favorite English teacher yet! He is always there to help you and explains everything in great detail. There are reading assignments, quizzes, and five essays (including the final). Take him, you'll love him!
Kevin is a great teacher for EN 103. However, he grades his students' papers pretty hard. You have to be very careful about your writing style especially. However, he is very understanding and helpful.
Professor Waltman is an amazing English composition teacher. He really seems to care about his students and made class fun. He took attendance every class period, but I never minded going to class because it was so enjoyable. He grades papers kind of tough, but if you put work into it and have him help you, an A is totally possible.
I took ENG 103 and the only thing that held me back was my procrastination. He really engages you and although he can get pretty "trippy" in his lectures about reality and "reality" he knows his stuff. Be prepared to really work hard on papers because he will nit-pick all the details of your style, but put your grade will reflect your effort.
He expects a lot out of his 103 students, and he grades papers fairly harshly. He also gives quizzes on assigned reading so read the stuff (most of it is interesting). If you put in the effort, he is willing to help and his feedback on papers is excellent.
worst teacher ever. extremely bias and is unfair. he only takes his point of view and doesnt agree with anything else. If your a greek or an athlete, STAY AWAY he hates us
fun...makes english fun and is also very easy on the eyes...
almost impossible to get an A... highest would be a B+. i wasnt in the greek system when i took his class but i definitely noticed how he treated those who were. he was much harder on them and it was unfair.
Great teacher. Gives tons of time for major papers and holds in class discussions to help iron out the wrinkles. Even has a day for peer editing. Take this class. Great man
He's a very nice guy but very opinionated and doesn't really accept anyone elses opinions. It's an easy class as long as you attend and ask for help. If you show interest, he will most likely score your essays better. The class was not an "easy 'A'" but an "easy 'B+'"
He is a really hard grader and if you don't read he will do a pop quiz. And his class isn't fun at all.
He is a GREAT teacher. I had him for ENG 101 and 102 and I didn't really like him much the first sem. but he grew on me. If you ask for help and act like you are really interested, you will do great. I think he actually graded my paper better one time because I came to him for help.
"Any questions, comments, concerns, announcements, existential dread before we begin?" You will hear that every day before class, and it's great. He's an awesome teacher. He grades very leniently. If you take good notes in class, you will do fine. Take him.
At first I thought his class was going to be hard because he was only the second male English teacher ever I had. I loved loved loved his class! I liked that he was down to earth and easy to talk to. Not to mention I was in the class with half my dorm. English is my major and whatever he teaches I'll take it.
He's a very encouraging professor. He seems like he truly wants his students to succeed. He's awesome!
Mr. Waltman's class was a bit challenging, but if you show the desire to succeed he will assist you in any way he can. Attendance isn't mandatory, but really helps you understand the material. Take notes because you can use them on the tests and they will be helpful for the 2 papers. He is very helpful on the papers, wants to see you succeed
You WANT this prof. Kevin is an awesome teacher. He's extremely helpful and makes class interesting. Two thumbs up.
Kevin is an awesome professor. He is challenging and wants to see his students succeed. He is ALWAYS willing to help you outside of class, etc. He finds ways to keep class interesting and keep the material pertinent. GO TO CLASS! It's not mandatory, but it shows a willingness to learn/the papers are impossible to write without going!
One of the best teachers on campus, not an easy course by any means but he is a nice guy and will do anything to help you do well, take this guy
His class is really boring, but u need to go because he gives quizzes. If u just look at spark notes you'll be fine on those. His tests consist of mult. choice, he'd give a passage and you'd guess the author/story/&why it's important,&essay questions. Easy paper grading. He was nice about answering questions outside of class. I would take him again
Great teacher, definitely take his class. You can email him your paper before it is due and he will give you lots of ways to make it better. He wants to help.
Class is a little boring, and hard to follow sometimes. Assigns a lot of reading, and discusses those readings in great detail. Gives quizzes at the end of each week. Overall, not a bad teacher, but you'll have to put in some work.
Great teacher, absolutely loved his class. Meet with him about your paper and he will help you out a lot so you can potentially get an A on everything. Definitely take his class.
Super hard grader. Assigns a lot of long readings and gives pop quizzes if you forgot to read. The readings and class are extremely boring. Very strict about attendance.
Kevin is an awesome person and he's an insanely smart dude. He really challenges you to think about the texts but sometimes I think he expects too much of his students. His grading is extremely difficult. I wasn't a big fan of the class but I definitely thought Kevin did a great job.
He's a great professor, and he makes class and the texts interesting. However, his grading is way too tough for a lower level literature class. Some days the readings are excruciatingly long, while other days there are only a few short poems to read, so check ahead of time!
Took his honors Am. Lit. course and enjoyed it. Our grade was comprised of 2 term papers and a classwork/participation grade. You don't find out how you do until the end of the term. Overall, he makes class interesting and is a very intelligent and insightful professor.
don't really have to do a lot of the assigned reading but bring the book to class because he likes you to have it. he's super chill no quizzes or tests only essays and they're not that hard. fair grader. had him for both EN101 and 102 great teacher
He's very nice and makes class interesting even when the material is kind of boring. Definitely my favorite professor.
Kevin is a fairly easy teacher. You're able to mess around on your phone and computer all class basically. As long as you understand what he's asking for in the papers, you'll make an A.
Socratic lecture style, but participation is counted toward the grade. If you learn best by note-taking, this may not be the instructor for you. Waltman's lectures are inspirational, so come prepared to discuss the readings to do well on papers and the final exam. The grade is two papers (1800 and 2200 words) and a final exam, plus participation.
Kevin Waltman almost made me an English major. Considering I do not like English, this professor made me enjoy my work and be proud of what I learned. Truly an honor to say I had him.
He is so helpful and kind. He's not an extremely tough grader, but he still gives you what he thinks you deserve. There are 4 papers and one project and no final. I really recommend him!
Attendance was taken randomly so it was better if you just showed up every day. You have to do the readings otherwise the paper topics will make no sense. Only 2 papers worth 60% of the grade then the final and classwork made up the other 40%. Made the material a lot more interesting than it actually was.
This man is 10/10 if you don't take him for EN101 your crazy! Easy grader and a super chill dude.
All of my courses were online this semester because of covid, including this one. Even though I never met him, Waltman is a great guy. He makes the most boring of readings interesting, he gives great feedback on rough drafts, and cares about his students even through zoom. A really great guy. Would definitely recommend.
Had him online during the pandemic, but he's still one of my favorite professors I've had. He is a tough grader, but he gives so much feedback on the rough drafts and final papers that it is easy to correct your mistakes. Also super accessible, which is especially helpful during the pandemic. Would 100% recommend.
I had Waltman as a freshman in a pandemic where everything was crazy and he was absolutely amazing. We had to read excerpts 3 times a week and respond, but the prompts were simple, yet thought provoking. We had a few zoom calls and after each one he would always say that if we needed to talk ab anything, he was always available. Highly recommend!
If you do well on essays, take this class. There are two essays that constitute most of the grade, alongside short responses to readings due almost every class day. He is also great for facilitating discussions if they interest you.
Prof Waltman was the best English teacher I've ever had. He gave good feedback on papers, and was very helpful when I needed to figure out how to cite something for another class. The papers weren't difficult, and he always let you know how something could be better or made more clear.
Mr. Waltman is the definition of "a real gem". You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and wants us to do well. He's super easy to get into contact with and always there to help. Every time I go to class I leave with a complete understanding of the text we discussed that day. He's the best English professor/teacher I've ever had.
Kevin is a wonderful teacher, he grades nicely but also with meaning. He doesn't give out much work and on some Fridays he cancels class! Make sure to go to class thought.
Dr. Waltman is an amazing literature professor. He does not believe in quizzes, so the only grades are attendance and the two papers which are 25% and 35% of your grade. Class attendance is necessary. The textbooks are necessary. Be willing to put in the work because he expects your best effort.
Dr. Waltman is a terrific professor. Attendance/completion of readings are necessary, but the readings were of appropriate length and the lectures were interesting and I genuinely looked forward to them. He gave me great feedback on my essays and was also readily available outside of class. Put in the work and you will be fine. Highly recommend.
He was seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. One of those teachers who you can tell really care and love their job. There was reading for each class period which took up some time, but his analysis of everything was so interesting. He only has two papers a semester, which were extensive but he always gives you lots of material to use.
Dr. Waltman is a really good professor who wants to make Lit interesting for all of his students. He made me actually enjoy reading and I would definitely take a class by him again. He is also really accessible and wants to help his students.
Prof. Waltman is very enthusiastic and helpful. He gives very good feedback on drafts and doesn't get picky over grammar/syntax, he mostly just cares about the content you write. Knows the texts very well and loves to talk about them. Attendance/participation is graded but not harshly. Be prepared for lots of reading, though. Overall solid choice.
I normally hate English but Professor Waltman is by far the best English teacher I have ever had. I enjoyed coming to class everyday because he really wanted to engage with his students. He took boring texts and transformed them into something really interesting and you can tell he cares. He also really helps you on your papers if you seek out help
Professor Waltman always came into class with a great energy. You can tell he really enjoys all of the assigned texts! As far as grading, the papers are weighted heavily on whether or not you understand the material correctly (and include context). There is also a class participation grade. He definitely likes to see his students succeed.
Dr. Waltman is a gem!!! Not only is he passionate and knowledgeable about the material, he cares about his students and wants to see them do well/improve. Take him during your years at UA if you can!!!!
The general structure of the class is set up wonderfully! The step-by-step instructions for all papers were amazingly useful to me, it took a lot of pressure off the final assignment because I could be confident in the process as we went along. This course helped me by spurring my interest to English, which was slim to none beforehand.
I struggled in hs with my English classes, because they all felt boring and repetitive. Not this class. Lectures are set up in a Socratic seminar/discussion format. He also trusts us to read the material so we arent bogged down by any pop quizzes. You have plenty of time to get quality feedback on essays which make up the majority of your grade
Waltman can be a bit of a hard grader sometimes, but overall he is pretty simple. There was only 4 essays and he gives us a lot of asynchronous Fridays where we just have homework due by 5. He uses the book, but you honestly do not need the psychically copy, just get the online one.
Kevin is truly one of the best English Professors I have ever had.
He was awesome and it was clear that he wanted his students to succeed. He was so funny! He can be a bit of a tough grader on papers but is always willing to help before they are due. Write all of your paper for the rough draft and he will give you so much help that will make you succeed on the final submission!
AMAZING professor. I have never enjoyed english classes, but he has made this class more than tolerable. His lectures are entertaining, he explains things so well, and when we have assignments he gives amazing feedback. If I ever have to take an english class again, I hope to have him as my professor.
love this man hes the best. i hope he reads the good reviews on here because he deserves some recognition.
AMAZING
Class consist of 2 papers that make up 70% of your grade and he is a very tough grader. There are assignments everyday so get ready to read the night away. Lectures are boring and if you don't read every text you will fall behind.
Professor Waltman is one of the best professors I've had at UA. There are only 4 essays, you can tell he cares about his students, He gives great feedback on all of the drafts! Lectures will help with the essays and he's funny so it made class fun. If you have to take anyone for English take Professor Waltman!!
Professor Waltman was a very good professor and gave really helpful feedback for all essays. He graded fairly and responded to emails quickly. He is very involved in the writing process for each essay so as long as you're willing to listen to his feedback and improve, an A in the class should be very achievable.
Professor Waltman was a very good teacher through and through, he truly cares about each student, and wants them to succeed in the progression of their writing skills. Gives attendance grades, very open outside of class via email. 4 papers throughout the entire semester gives lots of time to complete. Great Professor highly recommend his class!
Kevin Waltman was a good professor. He taught well and was always kind. However, his expectations were very high for the papers and graded them slightly unreasonably. The final grade is made of almost entirely 3 papers. Two are throughout the course and one as a final. He pushed my limits as a writer, but was overall a nice professor.
Professor Waltman is incredible, and it irks me that he isn't tenured. While some may believe his course to be difficult, keep in mind that he teaches an honors level course and will push you to improve your writing even if it comes with critiques. His lectures are incredible and he loves to have conversations with students. Please take his class.
The class was amazing and he was super funny! His lectures bring century old readings into the modern times in a way that makes you truly understand them. There were three big papers (two 1800 word counts and one 2500 word count) but if you're not that much of a writer, Waltman is always willing to meet to discuss ideas/questions in office hours!
Kevin is a super great professor. You can definitely see his passion for the subject and his love of teaching and class discussion. His grading is 100% dependent on writing and connecting the textbook with the themes we've discussed in class.
Good class especially for my first class i took at bama, super chill guy sometime he'll call on you if he knows you're not paying attention. Theres like 3 reading and no more than 4 essays so its pretty easy
Professor Waltman is an extremely biased professor. The spin he puts on the texts he assigns are bizarre and wildly opinionated. There is a ludicrous amount of reading assigned, but little other work beside essays. Make sure you write each essay from the opinion HE has on the text or you will be penalized. Absolutely no subjectivity allowed.
The absolute GOAT. Wrote 2 papers for most of my grade this semester and he gave us the Final prompt the week before. You have to pay attention and mingle with the material and show an understanding, but its not hard with him. 10/10, if you need an English credit, take this man.
He is an okay professor, class was easy but ur rly only graded on papers. He was extremely annoying, he would constantly pick on me whenever I wasn't smiling or didn't feel like answering questions. And when I did answer questions, if I was wrong, he made sure to make fun of me in front of the whole class. He did this to literally everyone btw.
Mandatory attendance is 20% of your grade and 3 papers. I despised going to class because he makes you feel small if you do not know the answer. Uses a random number generator to call on students in discussions. Good luck if you sign up for his class. Papers are not graded fairly and if you do not agree with his opinion you are wrong.
This man is ragebait in human form. Genuinely the ban of my existence for the entire semester. Literally take anyone else.
