He's really passionate and understanding, but expect to read the scriptures 30 minutes a day, and a list of scriptures to read before class. There is an attendance quiz based off those readings each class, just 1-2 questions. Micro Essays each week, 400 words on what you learned. 3 majors assignments, Midterm, project, final, just a lot of writing.
Suuuper passionate, and made me super excited for this class. There is a fair amount of writing but that's really easy to stay on top of. Take the class with Professor Whitehead if you want to feel the Spirit and really enjoy coming to class.
Professor Whitehead is an amazing teacher. He tries his best to learn everyone's names and gives clear, helpful feedback on papers. His lectures will touch your heart. He will teach you how to make the Book of Mormon apply to your life. Super awesome man!
Professor Whitehead is awesome! He is so kind and is willing to work with all of his students. His lectures are amazing and I have learned so much in his class. One of the assignments of his class is to read the Book of Mormon for 30 minutes a day and there are a few essays, but the class is not very hard.
Super engaging class. Teaches with a lot of passion. Cares a lot about his students and their faith
Professor Whitehead is an awesome professor. His class does require lots of papers and writing, but the grading criteria is clear and if you plan it right, you have more than enough time to complete them. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about the scriptures and takes time in class to make sure everyone's questions are answered. Take from him!
Really amazing and caring Professor! He was very forgiving on deadlines and switched weekly essays to every other week instead. We had two midterm papers that were around 7 double spaced pages. There is a final but is open note and open scripture!
He explains things simply and classes are cool because everyone gets a chance to discuss or participate. Some of my most spiritual experiences of the semester were in this class. You write a 400 word micro essay each week which would take me about a half hour to write. If you read your scriptures daily, this will be an easy class.
Awesome professor. Legit so spiritual and so knowledgeable, every class I was uplifted. There is some writing but it's super easy and you'll get 100% on the papers if you just follow the criteria. Super lenient about late work and will help if you're struggling at all.
Professor Whitehead is an incredible teacher who really brings the spirit every class. His love for God is very evident in his lectures. There are daily attendance quizzes, weekly reading reports, and a mini-essay every week. Kinda takes a lot of time, but the class and material is worth it.
Professor Whitehead is an amazing professor who cares about his students. His class is engaging and is a great way to learn the material. You are given attendance quizzes in class so attendance is important. This class had daily readings and weekly essays that were not too hard. This was one of my favorite classes this year!
Whitehead was my favorite & everyone should take him! He cares so deeply about the gospel & makes his lectures full of insights & questions that others have. He helped me love scripture study. You are required to read a couple verses before each class, but super easy. The midterm is a lot of writing but there is not a ton of writing required.
Professor Whitehead is one of the most caring teachers out there. The class is arranged that each class you'll cover a valuable doctrine/principle/theme taught in the Book of Mormon. There are readings for each class period and a weekly micro-essay (really pretty simple) and the midterms are longer papers you have to write. LOVED this class!
I LOVE PROFESSOR WHITEHEAD! He is one of the most caring and generous professors I've ever had. I always leave feeling the Spirit and uplifted. He is really great at facilitating discussion and helping everyone in the class to feel wanted and heard. Weekly 400 word essays aren't too bad.
I enjoyed taking his Book of Mormon class. He cares a lot about his students and the gospel. It does have a lot of reading and homework, but he's lenient and wants you to succeed.
Loved his ability to teach hard concepts and connect with the class. I have gotten more out of the Book of Mormon this year then any other.
Professor Whitehead has amazing spiritual lessons. You are expected to study the Book of Mormon 30 minutes a day and write a paper once a week. He is very understanding and if you have a good reason, he will make exceptions for late work. You do have to pay attention in class, most of the final was based on lectures so take notes. Great overall.
Not a demanding class, and Whitehead is a good teacher. The lack of slides used kind of disincentivizes paying attention in class. Additionally, as easy as the class is, the midterms can be sort of brutal, as you are expected to write lengthy, in-depth analysis. Lots of extra credit. Prepare to study the Book of Mormon a lot (30 minutes a day).
Absolutely cares about both his students and the Book of Mormon. There's an assigned reading before each class, a micro-essay most weeks, and a required 30 minutes of daily study, but once you get in the hang of it all it isn't too hard. Plus, it's absolutely worth it. Professor Whitehead inspired me to WANT to study the BoM and to really love it.
Awesome. Love this guy so much. He has you write a lot of short essays, and don't forget to take your quizzes. He is very flexible though and will make sure you are taken care of!
I figure that God may have been guiding my hand as I picked this class, because not only has he given me such powerful inspiration on merely the FIRST CLASS, but he has also brought my attention to important parts of my life that I never thought about before. Something that has strengthened my testimony and faith a hundredfold. THANK YOU!
If you want a teacher that is unable to care about his students. Pick him.
he's a good man savannah. a good man
Way too many essays! Informing students a few days before the deadline of a 2000-word essay with tons of research? This happened several times and robbed so much of my time. At this point this class is a writing class revolving around religion. Don't take this class unless you want to suffer.
super good guy! felt very cared for. people who don't like him probably just didn't try much. it was challenging reading 30 mins of the bom every day, but it was a good challenge and i'm grateful i did it.
I absolutely LOVED his class! There are some micro-essays and more extensive essays, but he is a really easy grader- I've never had to worry about my grade. He is very focused on the journey of learning and is so willing to help you succeed. He memorized everyone's name, and I loved his spiritual insights. Definitely recommend!
This class was so unorganized! It felt more like a seminary class, and he seemed completely indifferent. The atmosphere felt rushed and lacked both inspiration and spirituality. Avoid his classes at all costs.
He really cared about what he was teaching us, but the class wasn't very enlightening or interesting for me personally (maybe that's on me idk). A nice guy nonetheless. I wasn't bothered by the several very long papers, but I was frustrated with how long the final was. It involved 15+ short answer/essay questions and took me several hours to finish
Professor Whitehead is an awesome professor to have for Book of Mormon. You will always feel the spirit in his classes! He cares so much about his students, he even took the time to learn all of our names in a big class. I would highly recommend taking a religion class from him! He's the best!
He is a really nice man and seems like he really cares but only take his class if you have the time. There is an attendance quiz every day and it really affects your grade if you miss. There are multiple very long papers. The final includes an absurd amount of essay questions. It's just a lot of busy work- none is hard but it takes a lot of time.
Professor Whitehead shares some really inspirational stories occasionally that can touch one's heart. He really shows that he is passionate in what he's doing and he cares a lot about his students. It's not hard to get a good grade if you participate regularly.
Even though some attendance quizzes can be a bit tricky, you'll enjoy spending time in his lectures. Prof. Whitehead is very caring towards his students and he is willing to listen whenever you share your thoughts to him. Getting a good grade in his class is also not difficult if you do everything right and regularly
His lectures are very entertaining and insightful. Attendance quizzes are taken every day, so you have to be sure to be in class. Weekly micro-quizzes aren't difficult, but they do take time. There are also two other major essays due over the semester. He requires 30 minutes of scripture study every day. Not hard, but the class is time consuming.
I often felt bored, and it was particularly disheartening at times to witness him struggling with difficult questions. He avoids engaging in teaching and lacks enthusiasm. I wouldn't recommend it.
Unclear expectations and not a great class. I was so confused about his rubric criteria for grading. I wouldn't take his class.
Brother Whitehead is amazing! I'm a big fan of his and he's honestly been one of my favorite religion professors at BYU. He's a very kind and caring guy that will do anything he can to help us succeed and learn more about the material. He's also incredibly down to Earth and is down to talk about most any gospel topic.
Professor Whitehead is the professor with the most energy and obvious passion for what he teaches that I have ever had. He expects your attention and attendance because he knows it will be good for you. He's great, and creates a very spiritual environment. Lots of sharing with a partner in class, lots of reading, and definitely come prepared.
I took this class during a spring term so the pace was really quick but didn't feel overwhelming. After class quizzes that are super easy if you actually did the prep work for the day
One of these reviews mentioned that he "struggled with difficult questions". In my experience with his class, he is exceptionally skilled at addressing challenging questions if you want to understand the scriptures on a deeper level, and learn to articulate your thoughts through the weekly Micro Essays. Take his class, you won't regret it!
I randomly chose this class but ended up LOVING it. It was so inspiring every single class. He has you do a few assignments per week and they don't take too much time. He cares so much about his students and there are always SUCH good discussions. I leave class feeling so enlightened. Seriously take this class!
Professor Whitehead is such an incredible lecturer. I always leave his class feeling uplifted, inspired, and feeling like I've gained something. After being in the church for 18 years, I feel like I don't hear a lot of new things very often, but I repeatedly leave having learned something that I didn't know. Highly recommend!
A wonderful professor who is very enthusiastic in his teaching and has passion. He makes his classes enjoyable where I feel included and a want to be in the class. I actually learned several new principles and applicable principles.
Prof Whitehead is amazing! His lectures are always inspirational and thought-provoking. He encourages participation and active learning during class. Our spring class has a lot of reading but its all scriptures and talks. He brings the spirit and truly loves and cares for his students. I would highly reccommend him!
Super interactive classes, always spiritually fueling.
Professor Whitehead is the nicest person ever, he makes class really interesting and engaging and tells lots of cool stories from his life. He has helped me to learn a lot about the Book of Mormon and find new ways to study and learn about scripture that makes it so much more interesting. He wants to help you succeed and work with you!
I seriously only have the best of things to say about Professor Whitehead. You can see how much he loves the gospel just by the way he lives it. He wants you to succeed in this class and will help you. He asks amazing questions and has made me see the gospel in a whole new light. I HIGHLY recommend to everyone to take his class! You will not regret
He is very understanding and caring, will work with you on a lot. There is a decent amount of assigned work before class, however it helps you prepare for the lectures, which are always great.
Professor Whitehead is an engaging and caring professor. He enjoys what he teaches, and it shows. His lectures often have applicable and entertaining personal stories that keep things interesting.
Professor Whitehead is honestly a king. He seeks to involve and know every student. It's required to read the Book of Mormon for 30 minutes daily and do class pre-work. There are 4 small writing assignments based off readings, and 2 research reports (including the midterm). If you do your best and meet the criteria, the class has no stress!
He loves just getting straight into the doctrine and does it in a fun way. The more you put into the class and participate, the more you will get out of it. He genuinely cares about his students, even when he has a huge class.
I loved Brother Whiteheads class. His class is very engaging, and fun. He is very organized and clear on what he expects from students. Attendance was mandatory, and He often has class more of a discussion than a lecture, which I really enjoyed.
Professor Whitehead is very personable and spiritual, and I always could tell he really cared about us and what he was teaching. He really challenges us to learn and take our gospel study seriously, so if you're looking for a do nothing religion credit you may be better somewhere else, but if you want to get closer to Christ this is the place to be
I took this class during spring term so the lectures were 2 hours long. I am blown away at his ability to keep me engaged through two hours. His lectures are just so entertaining and powerful.
Very spiritually enlarging and interesting lectures. The course could be somewhat better organized on learning suite with links to the assignments in the schedule.
This class has been very inspirational. Professor Whitehead cultivates such a strong Spirit in his classroom. Stay on top of the homework so you can participate in class discussions.
I loved taking this class from Brother Whitehead! He takes the time to get to know each of his students and wants to hear from everyone. His class is very discussion based and filled with the Spirit. Brother Whitehead treats his students like equals and like his friends. The midterm is a straightforward paper and the class readings are great!
This professor teaches in a way that is really uplifting. The is very discussion based class and I have been enjoying it.
Amazing lectures!!
Professor Whitehead has so much experience and brings the Spirit to the class in a beautiful way. You will get what you put on this class. The best class I have taken so far!
Professor Whitehead is awesome! Lectures are uplifting and interesting, homework and assignments are straightforward. He is a great teacher and pretty flexible. I highly recommend taking this class!
He does very well to invite the thoughts and impressions the students feel, and follows up with very appropriate sympathy, gratitude, and insight.
He is a wonderful teacher that cares about his students! The spirit is always present when he teaches and he involves each of us. There is a lot of readings, but the readings help prepare you for class and it's always enjoyable. He is really funny too which adds to the enjoyment of the class!
By far the best religion class I've taken. Time-consuming, but I have learned so much, and my testimony has grown by studying the Book of Mormon consistently. I love that we learn HOW to study the scriptures better and more in-depth, and are graded off of this effort, but not necessarily the result. Will take more classes from him in the future!
Professor Whitehead is a very inspiring instructors. He brings the spirit into the classroom and creates an environment where everyone can participate. He teaches with clarity and passion, making even complex concepts easy to understand. He helps in developing meaningful study habits. Inviting us to try new ways to study the Book of Mormon.
Professor Whitehead is a great teacher. He has so many thoughts and has great stories. He has helped me see a different perspective of our readings that I had never seen before. He made sure to get to know us individually. He cares about his students and the gospel. If you missed anything, he is happy to help you still get some points.
I took Professor Whitehead's course during Spring 2025, and I absolutely loved it! Lectures were always engaging and intellectually enlarging. Expect to do 30 mins of scripture study every day with a 2 page essay or other project due at the end of the week. His course might look different for fall/winter, but it was the perfect spring course!
He has a deep knowledge of the gospel and his class seeks to help you understand the gospel through many different perspectives. It has changed the way that I read the Book of Mormon. He is funny and is willing to work with you. He seeks to help you understand the gospel on a deeper level which requires effort but nothing too crazy.
Lectures where sporadic at times, hard to follow/find the main concept. Overall a good class.
Professor Whitehead's teaching style allowed for quite a lot of class discussion, and he was very enthusiastic throughout each class. The workload was manageable, and if you showed up for class and did your daily scripture study, you were very likely to succeed. He cares about his students and was there to help us. Highly recommend!
Great professor, open to dialogue and loves his class.
I felt like there was a lot of readings for the class, but it was worth feeling the Spirit in every lecture. I also took it during the spring where the class was sped up, so I imagine that during a normal semester, it wouldn't be too bad. He is a great teacher and is committed to knowing and helping each student succeed.
Professor Whitehead does an amazing job of teaching a religion class to students. More important to me, he does an amazing job of teaching religion to people who are eager to learn more. He balances teaching the principles required by the course with teaching according to the needs of his students so well. He cares about what and who he teaches.
Professor Whitehead is amazing! I had the privilege of taking his class one of the first semesters he was teaching at BYU, which freaked me out I will admit, but it ended up being an amazing experience. He's so kind and understanding, and he also appreciates and acts on feedback from students. I also felt the Spirit so much in his class.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. I felt like I was in a poorly organized seminary class. I did not gain new insights or learn what one hopes to learn in a religion class at BYU. The course seemed disorganized, and the grading system lacked clear rubrics to understand the distribution of points. Do yourself a favor and find a better class.
He didn't come across as genuine, and I struggled to connect with his teaching style. I really tried to give it a chance, but the class felt disorganized and difficult to follow. There were lots of readings and assignments, but the he often lacked clarity. A lot of class time was spent on partner or group activities that didn't feel very purposeful
I found the class extremely disengaging. I never connected with his teaching style, which often felt unprepared and disorganized compared to my other religion classes. His lectures were confusing rather than inspiring, and I didn't feel uplifted by them. I would recommend choosing a different instructor. This was too much work for a religion course
The lessons are amazing. You learn a lot from this professor and he is incredible in helping you understand doctrine of the Book of Mormon.
Brother Whitehead is awesome! His Teachings and Doctrine of the Book of Mormon class is super inspiring. He is a great teacher and he really involves his students in the learning process. His lectures are great; I would recommend his class to all my friends.
This has been my first semester at BYU since transferring. I didn't know what religion classes would be like, since family had told me they can be really hard at times. However, this class wasn't overly challenging but instead was just very spiritually uplifting. He's great at pointing out cool parts from the BoM.
This class didn't meet my expectations. It felt surface-level, more like a casual Sunday School than a meaningful, faith-building experience I expected at BYU. The material often seemed unprepared, and personal stories didn't connect to the topic. Most class time felt like filler. I would NOT!!!! Recommend this course AT ALL!
I spent more time in this class than in my anatomy class, but it didn't feel worth the time or the money. There were no clear rubrics or guidelines, so I was often confused about grading and how the lessons connected. Overall, it lacked the uplifting and inspiring atmosphere I've experienced in other classes.
There were many projects that didn't seem to align with the lecture material, which made it hard to see the overall structure or purpose of the course. Grading criteria were unclear, and it often felt like there was no consistent standard. Overall, the teaching style felt confusing and lacked depth. Look for a different religion class and professor
Professor Whitehead is a fabulous teacher! He brings so much energy into class! We always have a lot of participation, and the Spirit is present! I loved him as a professor so much, I am taking another class of his in a different semester!! 10/10 would recommend
His class was mediocre, maybe even worse! I recommend avoiding this professor and his courses. There are many time-consuming assignments, and the course is not well organized.
By far, the absolute worst religion class you could take at BYU. It was superficial, poorly organized, and the teaching style made me cringe. The experience felt awkward and boring. I spent most of my time trying to figure out how to approach assignments. It felt choppy.
The instructor is a kind person, but the teaching style didn't suit me. The course lacked clear guidelines and meaningful content, which made it hard to stay motivated or have a fulfilling learning experience.
Prof Whitehead has well prepared lectures. He's knowledgable, & makes an effort to know each student. The spirit radiates off him, & his lessons are comprehendible. There is a lot of material to read each class, but they help prepare you thoroughly. Take his course if you are looking to strengthen your testimony & have great spiritual discussions!
This course was disappointing. The material felt unengaging and not up to college standards. Readings were dull, and the assignments were often unclear or poorly explained. Definitely the weakest religion course I've taken.
At times, the class felt like a Seminary class with a greater emphasis on spirituality rather than on learning tangible material. While testimony-building stories are great, I would've loved if we learned at a deeper level. That being said, he's a great teacher and super devoted to helping students.

I'm taking this class over the summer with Professor Whitehead and it's been a great experience! I have to miss the last two classes and finals and he's been understanding and easy to work with. His lectures are always powerful and often funny. Lots of reading but workload isn't bad besides that, so it's not a big deal. Chill guy and great class!
One of the most confusing classes I've taken. There were no clear grading criteria, no examples provided for assignments, and the lectures were neither engaging nor uplifting. Overall, the course felt disorganized and uninspiring. I recommend looking for a better-structured and more thoughtfully delivered class.
I really enjoyed my time in this class. My favorite about Brother Whitehead was how intentional and meaningful his leactures were. I alwasy left lecture a little closer to Jesus Christ than when I came in. I will say there is a lot of outside work like essays and of course readings, but for the most part he was very accomodating and understanding!
Boring class and confusing assignments. Little to none feedback and lack clear expectations. I don't recommend his classes
This was not a fun neither an uplifting class. Assignments and lectures were all over the place. Avoid him!
This class was all over the place. I was so lost the entire semester. Not my favorite teacher. He based his style on many stories. Not new information and confusing assignments .
Avoid this teacher. The class was way too confusing. Was he even prepared to teach? Honestly, I learned more from other students than from the actual lectures.
Professor Whitehead is easily the best religion professor I've had. He is so knowledgable, he is so enthusiastic, and he genuinely cares SO much about each of his students. If you actually try in this class, you will be so uplifted. He respects his students so much and would do anything to help them learn. Take a class from him!!
I found the course to be disorganized, and the expectations for assignments were often unclear. The grading felt subjective and lacked consistent guidelines, which made it hard to understand how to improve. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this professor. If possible, consider taking the course with someone else.
The lectures in this class aren't lectures, they're discussions. There's no slides to go off of. The course load isn't too heavy but I don't feel like I learned much because it was often difficult to hear the discussion going on because it's a large lecture classroom. Don't take unless you're ready to actively participate in discussions.
He's a friendly person, but not the kind of professor I expected. I often felt confused about the class direction and how the material related to tests or grades. Unfortunately, I didn't learn as much as I hoped from a BYU religion course. Look for a different, more engaging teacher who is clearer about expectations.
Professor Whitehead was in incredible professor! His class was easy to follow, instructions were clear. The final exam was not too difficult, and the essays were actually wonderful! Things were not graded harshly either.
He was so incredible! I loved his lectures. His essays and exams were not challenging either. He is always available and willing to help students as well.
He's a genuinely kind person and clearly cares about the subject, but the class itself felt dry and lacked the spiritual or inspirational depth I was hoping for. It was more focused on covering material than encouraging deeper engagement. I wouldn't personally take another class with him. Long lectures and weird assignments.
Professor Whitehead cares so much about his students! My class size was huge, but he did his best to learn the name of each student. Thirty minutes of reading The Book of Mormon each day is required, and a few assignments besides that. With some honest effort, exams and assignments aren't bad at all.
Doctor Whitehead is such a great teacher and really cares about his students. He memorized every single one of his students names. Each day you have class you are given a code in class (attendance mandatory) for a very easy assignment. Once a week you do a case study that takes no longer than 30 min. And then there are 4 biggish projects.Easy+Great
Overall, I found this class difficult to follow. Several assignments seemed unclear, and it was hard to understand what was expected. The lectures didn't engage me, and his teaching style was different from what I'm used to in religion courses. He tries, but the course felt somewhat basic compared to others I've taken, and I wouldn't recommend it.
Not my favorite class. I'm glad the semester is over, as the course felt a bit disorganized and hard to follow at times. His teaching style can be awkward at times, and assignments and due dates didn't always align. Overall, it felt a little rushed and wasn't as enlightening as I had hoped.
Professor Whitehead truly will put in extra effort to teach his students. I loved taking his Eternal Families class, and I wish every BYU student could take this class from him. Every class had spirit.
Prof Whitehead is so kind and makes an effort to get to know all his students. Tests are open-note and based on the family proclamation. He generates thought-provoking discussions in class. Three projects that require a bit of time outside of class but are not difficult. Attendance assignments take fifteen minutes at most to complete.
I couldn't say that Whitehead didn't care about his students. I have never felt so welcomed and loved than in his classroom. He learned all of our names and would just come up to us as if we had known each other well. He shared a Christ-like love that truly changed me as he taught this semester. I felt like I learned so much too, TAKE FROM HIM!
At first, I didn't like having to do a writing assignment every class day for my attendance, with one bigger one at the end of the week, but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad. There is quite a few readings each class, but you don't really need to write about them or answer questions about them often. Tests are super easy, would recommend.
This was the most unprepared religion professor I've had at BYU. Lectures felt flat and surface-level, and the assignments were often inconsistent with the expectations—when there even were clear expectations. There were no rubrics provided, which made it difficult to understand how work would be evaluated. Don't take his class.
His lectures felt like a dull, run-of-the-mill church class taught by someone without real training. Do yourself a favor and find a higher-quality professor. His grading is so inconsistent and unclear that it will drive you insane.
So many slides. I wish he would have sent the slides so that I could skip class. It wasn't my favorite class.
The environment in his class was kind of odd and confusing. He's a nice person, but I often felt unsure about what we were learning, so it wasn't my favorite religion class.
