All I can say is good luck if you find your self in her class, save yourself and switch teachers ASAP(or don't take it if the other English classes are full.I wouldn't be writing this if it wasnt my absolute truthful opinion. I dreaded going to her class, when it was done and over with I felt as if I had just got out of a jail cell.
This professor grades harshly. I thought I was decent writer, but she made me feel like I couldn't write a high school level paper. She's very specific in what she's looking for. Go ahead and take someone else for your own sake.
I took her class online during the summer and it was dreadful to even sign on to my class because i knew i was going to get bombarded with homework. I understand summer is jam packed but a teacher should ease up a little and understand her students instead of failing them if they turn in their paper one minute late!!! ugh i cant!!!
Let me just put it like this, I had NEVER failed a paper until I took this class. I have never hated a class so much until this one. Defiantly do NOT take her course, especially during the summer! There are SO many assignments, and she is just such a harsh grader. She's not helping me improve she's making me hate writing, period.
She is a horrible professor, so very contradictory and difficult to deal with. I have never received a failing grade on a paper until I took her class, she is so knit picky yet makes grammatical errors while giving feedback. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE.
Mrs. Ruiz is a English instructor, and it is her job to help students understand their weaknesses in writing. She expects students to improve throughout the course, and grades according to required level writing. I feel people have commented negatively, because self disappointment. She does grade tough, but only to help improve writing potential.
She cares a lot about developing writing past what worked in high school. I now feel prepared for other writing assignments in college. I had never done multiple drafts of a paper, and I had never done a lot of research until this class.
She'll say a paper is not meant for an academic reader, then take points off for not writing toward an academic audience. If you want to score an A in this class, forget it, and I felt like I knew less about writing by the end of the semester. She has a ton of fun critiquing your papers, but doesn't offer any sort of help. Run.
Apparently angry about students coming out of English I unprepared, mentions it constantly. Often demonstrably wrong about the guidelines she's trying to be so rigid about. You have to guess what standards she's grading off of because they often don't follow MLAthe book. Doesn't realize there are grades between A & F and gives 0s instead of help.
She is a tough professor. Even if you do what she asks on her essays, she still find what is wrong with it. If you write an essay and you do what she asks, she will find something wrong and have you fix it, and if it is still wrong she might ask you to change it back to what you had before. i do not recommend taking her class!!
Nothing wrong with a prof. having high standards, but only if they make those standards clear and help students meet them. Feels like she's working against you, not with you. Ignored requests for clarification. People dropped out of the class like flies... only 5 or so left not even halfway through the semester. First time I ever dropped a class.
I have never had a teacher spend so much time on my drafts. I really learned a lot. I had to learn to manage my time and couldn't wait until the last minute. She always answered my email fast and encouraged me to drop by the office when I needed extra help.
I have tried to pass this class several times before and dropped out each time. This time I went every day and tirned in all assignments. I started making good grades and when she found out I had flunked before, she spent extra time encouraging and helping. I recommend her but you have to do all the work to get a good grade.
I was in the summer class some of the others are talking about here. Maybe they don't know that in summer school they have to do the same amount of work as a regular semester? Ruiz was very clear about that the class would move fast and nobody could get behind. I liked the video lectures she posted once or twice a week. I never had a teacher comment like that, but I got used to it and benefited from it. She really lets you know what she thinks about your argument and sources. I did not like the online textbook because my computer is old. Other than that, I recommend her and would take her class again.
I just finished and earned a A. I had heard that I needed to go to class every day and could not miss any work so I did that and it worked. My writing is better and I am not afraid to write for other classes now. Her lectures sometimes are funny and motivated me.
This class is definitely no walk in the park. Her class is mostly writing argumentative essays so if that's not your thing, then choose another teacher. Her criteria for each assignment is very specific and you have to dedicate a lot of time on the homework if you want an A.
I slacked in high school but was able to catch up my writing skills. Actually enjoyed the last few projects, especially the ad analysis and getting to explore my own topic in Ted Talks.
I took this class first at TAMUCC, failed and tried again at Del Mar. She helped me and I think the class is better here--still requires a lot, but she was willing to help when I got confused.
First class I have ever dropped. Easy on former failers, hard on people who normally make A's. Asks you to write an explanatory paper, and counts off because she wanted an argument. Didn't like my opinions, wanted me to write out hers. Impossible! Gives instructions that take a couple hours to read. Learned nothing new. Wouldn't recommend.
I find the directions really, really clear. When I follow them, I get A's. Also enjoyed the class structure of a main topic for the semester, but within that topic I could explore what I wanted and argue what I wanted. It makes it easy to go week after week, sort of on the same topic. Better than starting over with each paper.
Just finished summer and recommend her. An easy way to get the class done -- I had to work, but overall, it was a smooth ride.
Lots of interesting readings and group projects made it fun to go to class. Figured out how to argue well and do in deph research. first time i feel like I wrote something good and worth it.
First semester of college and had a good time in English. Scared at first and realized high school didn't do much to teach me. but was interested in the readings and improved quickkly. Group work and lots of discussion and edgy readings made it go by fast. She can be pretty funny but doesn't put up with excuses.
She can helpful with your work at times, but the workload is ridiculous!
I did not like this class. I did not think she made sense in her feedback and no matter how hard I tried I did not make better than a C on papers. Even when I did what was asked and got it reviewed like she said to, it didn't help. The workload is ridiculous. You must have the book the first day of class.
I learned a lot about college writing and also how to represent myself better at work, where people are always arguing and complaining,. I have some new communication skills now.
English was my favorite subject until I took the course with this teacher. She gives directions to her assignments, and even if you do the assignment according to her directions she still fails you. I would not recommend her to anyone because she will make you feel discouraged about furthering your education.
I did not know about how to make my papers organized and persuasive before this class. I learned alot aboaut the psychology of convincing people. Interesting class and fun discussions about current events. I now like to keep up with the news. She obviously cares about how well her students do in the future.
I am, and have always been a straight A student. This class definitely tested my abilities. However, Mrs. Ruiz gives excellent feedback. If you are looking for a fast easy class, this is not one of them. She challenges you to learn, to think critically, and to become a better writer. I made an A in the class, but I worked very hard.
Her class is challenging. It was the hardest class due to scheduling time to complete readings since she assigns so much. She is a great professor that really helps students write better.
She is the worst teacher out there. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to take this class. She makes you feel discouraged and does give not give you any good feedback. And her feedback is mostly negative. She is also very rude and belittles you. If she is your last choice, don't take her. She claims we have freedom of speech, but under her terms.
I had her for Summer 2 of 2016 for 1302. She did not grade any of my papers due to the amount of errors, if I fixed them by going to the Writing Center she still didn't grade my papers. Overall, she's not a good teacher for many reasons of not grading a paper even when there were no errors.
The "coaching" that she gives is usually " that's good" or "that's wrong do it again". During in class work time do not expect much in class help from her. If you are easily offended do not take her class. You must to the readings she gives before class or she will kick you out. She makes it very clear that it is her classroom.
I thought Ruiz was going to be a great teacher. I liked how strict she was but she is not a great teacher. There is no guidance. Taking her class you feel like your going no where. Once you write your paper she takes a "glimpse" and automatically says "Great Work!" She has given me the same online comment on my work as 2 of my other classmates.
I liked the way she runs the class. I chose some interesting topics to write about, what I wanted. Be ready to read and write every day. She expects you to be prepared and come to class. I think she really cares about getting me ready for my nursing degree and all the writing I have to do.
Mrs Ruiz is a very challenging professor she grades rough and you have to make sure you do the readings she assigns you if not you will be lost she also likes to talk about current events which was interesting but I advise you if your a slacker this class will be hard for you if you are willing to work hard and put in effort you can pass
If you're into hard classes, this professor is definitely for you then. She said none of her professors lower the bar for her so she will not do it for you. If your opinion is out of the norm, then you must do extensive research & prove your point to her. Lastly, like some others said, don't take her if you're easily offended.
It looks like some of these people did not work very hard. I think the class is easy as long as you follow directions and attend class. so many kids did not do that no wonder they are mad
I learned a lot and used it in other classes this semester like speech and Psychology to earn good grades on my papers. She is really caring and helpful.
One of the toughest teachers i have ever had.. She was really nice and would help if i needed it, but still tough. If you are having difficulties visiting her office hours helped!
The class has no direction and the assignments are hard to follow. Her reviews do not help when trying to understand what needs to be fixed.
Do not take this class ! I repete DO NOT TAKE professor Ruiz! I love English and this was the worst English class Iv ever taken !!
She's a very difficult Teacher and a hard grader. Do not take her class online at any costs. She will flag anything as plagiarism and will give you a zero leaving you to either fail or drop.
I took this class online and loved it. No problems. Called her a few times for extra help. I had not done any research in high s hcool so it was hard, but I did it. The Solutions paper was my favorite. I wrote about how to fix sexism in sports.
She gives you the tools and then stands back and lets you practice iwth them. I liked not having ot do the big papers until later so I could figure out how to research. I was in an online class but called her during office hours when I needed to. sshe was always so nice
She lets you decide whether to come to class, but I saw a lot of people who did not come and dropped out. I did great. Enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Surprised to see I had an A at the end. Loved writing about gaming and architecture. My favorite paper.
This was the first time I had an online class. I liked it. She was always fast to grade and respond to my email. I never had questions about the assignment directions. There seemed to be some studens in class who did not follow directions. It was hard to peer review those papers. But otherwise, a really good class.
I got Professor Ruiz by luck, bad luck. She is tough and really makes you work for it. in the what? 12 weeks of class we wrote 14-15 essays. She gives directions then when you show up in class she adds on to the directions, FOR EVERY PAPER! I ended with a B, but I worked hard for it! Wouldn't take her again.
I usually love English but Mrs. Ruiz was the worst teacher ever. I took her class online and everyone was failing and talking about there grades, seemed like she gave everyone 60's or 0's on every paper you write, even when you give her exactly what she wants. In fact many students did end up reporting her
She is the most difficult Professor I have ever had. Never positive feedback. I took her online and she is accessible out of class, but its like two different people. Not helpful at all.
Okay Y'all if you want your full experience take this class. It is hard, because of her grading style. She has a lot of papers, but in the end you will be grateful for everything she taught you. I am not very good with time management, but I still got a B in her class. My tips are talk to her and actually give effort in your papers.
Professor Ruiz is a tough grader; there is always something due. Get ready to read a lot and write even more. I took this class online. Half of the class dropped the course. This class is one of the hardest I have ever taken. She really made me work for a good grade. My writing skills improved significantly after taking this class.
Her directions are unclear & contradictory. She said to ask questions through email, but doesnt respond. I was using MLA format & referred to the textbook & went to Stone Writing Center, but was told it was still wrong. I hired a tutor who works at DelMar & they said my paper was correct. I have to file a grievance to get my grades changed.
Great English teacher. If you put the effort and keep communication with her she is there to help you from start to finish. I struggled in this class but pulled through at the end when I reached out to her. She helped me get through the class and pass it. There are several papers required and she grades very tough however shes there to help.
Shes a tough grader, but she is clear on directions, but when it comes to essays she is very particular.
Very tough grader. Gives feedback on assignments but doesnt go over the ways to fix them.
Mrs. Ruiz was the worst English professor Ive ever had. Her online course was extremely tedious, 4-5 500 word essays due week on top of other major assignments due. Docks HEAVY for minor mistakes, or incorrect punctuation. Doesnt accept late work, but still expects it to be submitted. STAY AWAY!!!
Very difficult, takes days to respond to emails, says she doesn't accept late work but cherry picks who she will accept late work from. Will make you do 2-3 500 word essays a week. Says she's here to help but when you ask questions she tells you to go the writing center. Would never take this class again. Very discouraging for new students.
She is pretty much convinced her class is the only class out there has you turn in 3 papers pretty much EVERY WEEK!! They have to be 500 words minimum. She's very rude even though she says she "cares" about her students. She is also convinced social media is everyones problem. She seems to forget we have other classes and work going on.
Ruiz was very hostile toward political views that were opposed to her own. She gave 0ut some useful handouts and notes. She is a though grader. I would not take her class again if i had the chance. I was kind of sad too because she seems like a nice person outside her class however i did not pay to have someone preach politics. stick to english
Great class and nice that it's online--lets me work full time
I really like the way she does the first 8 or 9 weeks to let us learn how to write before taking the heavy project grades toward the end. I came in unprepared for college writing but really feel good about being ready for my nursing degree now. Some students are immature and don't realize how important this class is.
I am making a good grade in here and I'm kind of surprised because I did not write a lot in high school. My first big research paper was good because I followed directions and she helped me with the draft. I told my friends to take the class.
She has a strict attendance policy for online--cannot miss more than a few deadlines. This helped me alot. My papers are getting better and I recommend you take this class. I want to get into nursing school and I feel I am writing better now.
I said easy A but only if you turn everything in and do the reading and homework. I saw students get mad at her simply because they did not want to work very hard, but I did not have any trouble last semester. My sister is taking here class this semester and likes it.
If I could give her a lower rate I would. She is the worst Professor I have ever had. If you get her, save yourself and get your schedule changed. She is rude, very sarcastic when you ask for help, and does a great job at discouraging her students. Takes days to reply to an email, and will not respond to an email over the weekend. Don't take her.
Had an assignment due every class period, which was tough because it gets overwhelming! Shes a tough grader. Plus the essays that we had to write about were boring. I would not recommend her if its your first year back in college after being out for a while.
I like this teacher and will take her next class in the spring semester. I learned a lot that I didn't know from high school.
This class was challenging but I learned a lot. I thought I was a good writer in high school but learned how to do it the college way here. Loved the readings and discussions and peer review was super helpful. She is a great teacher.
Completely horrible class experience! When I asked her questions outside of the classroom she was not helpful at all and very rude. Only 4 people out of 30 or so didn't drop the class and completed the semester. Those who dropped could not handle her attitude, lack of help, and assignments given with a day or two to complete them.
I would not recommend this professor to any one coming into college in a while. Ruiz is a tough and sarcastic grader, she would call out students for not being smart enough for her class. she has made me discouraged from attending college. She gives essays like its christmas. no bueno.
She is the bomb.
For being a 1301 class it is very in depth. She gives amazing feedback on all of your papers though! I struggled in the beginning but as I got the hang of it and into a.m routine then it got much better! There are A LOT of papers so make time to write them! There are three major projects and a few quizzes throughout. Overall I enjoyed the class!
I would never recommend this professor to anyone. Pro-tip: if she puts a minimum number of sources you need to include for an essay do at least three more because she will give you a low grade for doing the "minimum of research required." So many headaches and endless nights crying over her class. Please beware.
The best class I have taken so far.
She does a good job. I loved fight club and the way she sits and talks with us about our drafts. She does not put up with typos and sloppy editing, though.
BEWARE! I tried taking English 1302 with her online, wrong choice. I told her weeks in advance that I would be out of the country on a Maymester course during the first week, she was unsympathetic. She DOES NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK. What kind of a person does that?
This class is a challenge. I've never had a teacher give this kind of detailed feedback. I did not like it a first. Now I love it and wish all my teachers would do this. I like the pop culture book and am writing about Game of Thrones and Netflix. I talk with my friends and family about whats in that book.
its online class and she acts like were in the class physically. when anyone asks her questions, she doesn't answer them, just says "look at your syllabus" overall a stupid class and professor for someone who isn't an English major.
She was very helpful and took her time to give us feedback. She has a great attitude that made me want to go to class. I would definitely recommend her to everyone else.
She has made it clear that she encourages her students to succeed. She has been a big hepl because I was taking 1301 at the same time as 0408. The work improved my writing. I recommend her!
I learned a lot and she seems to really care. If you want an easy class, this is not for you. I am going into nursing and now feel ready. My high school was a joke and I had to catch up. Recommend!
took this class online heavy in MLA formatting but over all pretty easy as she gives you lots of feedback most is complete or incomplete so if you understand what is wanted should be an easy A class.
fun class with zombies and raunch culture and lying ads. I enjoyed it a lot and was proud of my research papers. peer review was hit or miss but teacher always gave detailed help.
I really loved this class and will take 1302 with her. She really cared and helped me. Her talk about being successful in my mental attitudes was great, and fun to know she almost failed math because of bad attidude.
She scared me at first with the detailed assignments and amount of work and I almost quit. But as the semester went on, I figured it out and realized all the constant writing and feedback was helping. I have never had a teacher comment on my work in that much detail. It's hard but worth it.
I was scared at first because this professor demands a lot and does not put up with students who are negative or slack. I could tell that from the start. But I kept going and she really helped with comments on my draft and when I emailed, she was quick to answer. I am really proud of myself for not giving up. I wish I had taken this class sooner
I did not want to be in this class for dual credit but ended up really liking it. I wish she was teaching 1302 this semester. Recommend!
I took her class online and it was very difficult. She expects too much from online students and expects students to check announcements every second of the day. If you mess up on something so small she will mark it as incomplete and give you a 0 instead of giving you credit for doing the work. It's either 0 or 100 except for papers.
I had failed English before but did great this time. She encouraged me and I learned a lot. Feel ready now for nursing program.
She is really great. If you keep up with the work and ask questions you get a good grade. Lazy students won't make it, though.
She is not a "teacher" to me. She really does not teach anything at all. All she does is assign loads of work, which is totally understandable, we are in college. BUT she doesn't teach anything. Her response is "read your book. She doesn't lecture, she rants about "half of you are not going to make it to the end" almost ever other week. DO NOT TAKE
Love this professor! Some did not like her because she makes you work for it and you cannot plagiarize but I learned a lot and wrote arguments about stuff I never thought I would write about.
DO NOT TAKE. ESPECIALLY ONLINE. WORST PROFESSOR. Maybe she is better in person but definitely not online. She calls out students for their mistakes, & when asking for help her response is read. HORRIBLE. She herself states she does not like teaching online. So why do it then? Horrible. Be expected to get a 0 on an assignment for a missing coma!
I am not a fan of English, but I enjoyed this class and her teaching style. I have to take the next English now and feel like I am ready.
Loved this class on pop culture. Recommend
I failed the first few assignemtns but started following her directions and ended up making As. She is fun and really seems to care, but she does not put up with students' bs
Workshop days were great because she would sit with me and help with any problems on the draft. I struggled with the works cited page and she took time to explain it really well. Great class and she really cares
I learned how to write and feel better about going into nursing now. She is not easy, but really helps and I would take her class again.
I took the class online and I'm glad I did. I was not sure how I would do, but she helps a lot and her assignment directions are super clear. The peer reviewers were helpful and she always gave me good suggestions for finishing the drafts.
I enjoyed the class and getting to choose my topics for writing. I had never done research and learned how to get good sources. It's not an easy A, but I'm glad I worked hard. I'm proud of the grade I got. I want to take her next class.
I just finished her 8 week class. I wasn't sure that would be good for me since I've been out of college for a while and since the class was online, but I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. I was taking a history class at the same time and this class really helped me know what to do in the other class.
Online class is good. She is involved and posted a lot of lectures and announcements. Easy to do well. A nice surprise.
Her 8 wk slass is easy if you follow directions and stay on top of it. I cannot believe I got that much writing done and I learned a lot. Different from high school.
Easy class if you follow directions. I had to ask for help a lot with using Canvas and she always helped. Enjoyed the pop culture topic and readings and I would take her class again!
SHE DOES NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK. College isnt easy and this professor is EXTREMELY STRICT on deadlines. Professor Ruiz is an amazing professor and she really tries to transition you into a college level writer. However, the class was extremely rigorous and I would not recommend it. The course may make you feel intimidated so avoid it if you can.
If you want to pass English I suggest you avoid this class. Very harsh grader and is not lenient. This class will make you overwhelmed and you will not feel confident that you can pass the course.
I found the class easy--you just have to follow directions. Her assignments are detailed so I printed them out and crossed off each thing to be sure I did it. Then, I got an A every time! Good class to take. Enjoyed the TED paper.
Ya, I learned about writing, but the best part was all the funky reading. I chose stuff about the boogaloo, why therapy dogs in hospitals are a bad idea, how white males are being left behind in the schools, and for my last paper how cryptocurrency is going to change everything. I think I wrote good research papers.
Prof. Ruiz is a fabulous English teacher, her feedback is great and she pushes you to do better through the semester. Her assignments are very clear on what she wants you to do. I suggest taking the time to do the papers the right way (putting time and effort) and you'll get a good grade. Also took her for ENGL1301 in SP18 and took ENGL1302 in S19.
I ended up with a B because my last project and final exam were much better. I felt like at the end I finally understood it and I was really proud. I never cited sources or even did research in high school so this was all new. Someetimes she calls it boot camp and it felt like that at first. But I made it and I'm really happy.
I had Professor Ruiz my freshman of college. I really disliked her at first. She has a very intimidating presence. However, she always gave very thorough feedback on my papers, and was extremely helpful with any concerns I had. Ultimately, I thank her for my being able to do MLA format well, and she made me a better writer with all her critiques.
good class liked online
We went online after spring break because of the virus. I liked the class. Her directions are clear and she was good about answering email if I needed help . I do't watch news much but got interested after this class. Hoping to take her literature class in the fall.
Professor Ruiz was a great professor. She lectures very well and provides clear instruction. This class is no easy A, if you want to pass just put in the effort. You learn alot in her classroom and she provides feedback on all your essays.
This is not a very good professor. It isn't a hard class, but she is extremely rude. She claims that she is accessible but that is not true. She will call you out in front of everyone, embarrassing you, if you make a minute mistake. The textbook is hardly any help. I would not recommend this professor.
Not the easiest class but she gives really good directions. She always answered my email quicly and was very patient
Professor Ruiz was one of my favorites, as time went on she helped me advance my writing. If you miss 4 days, you automatically fail her class. Never leave that little book at home, she yelled at people who forgot their books. You get to choose what to write on and have 4 papers to write. The final is cake. I liked her but many didn't. Good luck!
I have been out of school a long time and was worried about this class, but I ended up liking it and doing well. I am proud I made it through and want to take another class with her
I didn't get to finish the class because my husband got sick with corona. Mrs Ruiz was so nice and checked on me every few days while it was going on. very helpful and caring
Way too many essays to write and extremely unclear grading criteria.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Is not a good selection for those needing remedial level. Her feedback is belittling
Great class and easy enjoyed the papers assignments
I wish I had her class the first time I tried it
I prayed that every time I opened my laptop I had a virus so that I wouldn't have to read the comments Mrs. Ruiz made. Any self-confidence I had with writing disappeared in this course. She will make you redo, redo and redo your essay and then mark it late even if you turned it in on time. If you can take someone else please do it.
If you are no on level for the love of god DO NOT take this professor. She is unclear in grading criteria and is not relatable at all. She gives half answers on inquiries and what she does answer you with is demeaning. If you are remedial level find another instructor like I had to the following semester.
Sucks. Do not take her. Very rude.
The transition from high school to college writing is difficult, but after a few assignments and a lot of help from the professor, I did well. My high school did not prepare me, but I learned in class that's OK because college level is different anyway. I am proud of the problem/solution and TED talk analysis papers I did and I liked choosing my
I made it through developmental reading and writing. I thought I would fail this class but I actually did great. Recommend this teacher.
Dont waste your time
Look, if you are a freshman in college like I was, do not take this professor. Im not bashing on her in any way but if you havent written any papers in a long time or arent strong in writing; do not take this class. She is very critical of everything you write. I get shes trying to have us become better writers but its not fair to everyone.
Take this class. You will learn a lot. I loved the TED project. She is fun and pretty passionate about teaching writing.
Interesting topic and her lectures are funny. I wasn't sure about taking it online. Turns out it was fun. I just did what she said and got a good grade.
She is a good teacher and you will learn what you need to. The work load is too heavy for a freshman level class. 500+ words a weeks and she expects you to know punctuation and sentence structure. If you ask questions you get smart responses without an answer. If you have a heavy class load, work, or any other obligations I would not recommend.
I learned SO much. I had no idea what I learned in high school. Her class is fun and I liked being able to write about topics that interested me. She teaches in a way that made me work instead of just giving me the answers like they did in high school. I can use the textbook and will keep it to help with other classes. Take her class!
Loved this class. Schedule was regular so I could work all week on stuff and get it in. Worked well with my job and family. She expects you to work and learn and read the book. Some students did not seem to like that, but oh well. The funniest part of the class was listening to her parrot squawk while she was trying to record lectures!
found her to be belittling and rude in her teaching style. Her prompts were annoying and she didnt give much wiggle room with it.
Rough class, If you don't understand certain concepts of writing you're in for a tough time. After visiting stones writing center on many occasions for proofreading still received lackluster grades. She'll probably find something wrong with the way I wrote this. Good luck.
I took this class excited because I enjoy writing. Ever paper came back not to her expectation. Very depressing...I decided to have two friends one whom holds a masters English read over my paper. They said the paper was near perfect. Guess what? Still received a terrible yet passing grade. Mind you Im only 15 yrs old and an early graduate.
I have always enjoyed English classes, though Professor Ruiz found ways to make that very hard. I was up late writing the MANY papers, and though she did give me chances to rewrite sometimes, she would not always acknowledge my rewrites or my original thesis. Definitely the hardest class I have taken.
Great class recommend
I wish I had this professor for 1301 too. Good class and I learned a whole lot.
I learned so much and cannot wait to transfer to College Station. I wish I had her class earlier, but I put off taking it. Recommend. she really cares about students learning to write and think.
I took Ruiz's pop culture 1302 class. So much reading, but it was all really interesting. I did not think I would read about some of those issues in a college class. Discussion with classmates was eyeopening. Amazing to see how people talk about these topics. My favorite was probably about kids going to gender neutral kindergarten.
Easy class if you keep up with it. She posts little stuff almost every day that helped me know what to do.
Good class. I feel it was worth the tuition. Will use this infor in other classes starting now. Will keep the textbook.
This professor is not good at her job. Many times have I had to deal with her for telling me that I'm not following directions, and to give an example. She'll tell you to write about the moon. So you write about the moon. Then she tells you why you're not following directions and doesn't explain further. She claims we need to be better writers...
She obviously loves what she does and maybe expects for the rest of us to love it too, but this class was not fun. I love writing and she has completely crushed me. Nothing is good enough. And heaven forbid you have a different opinion than hers, your papers a grilled for it. I chose this class last minute, my fault. Research professors first!
Great class.
She honestly messed up my grading so many times, I'm not sure she was even reading my papers. I would have to email her and correct her on multiple things she said my paper was missing and took off many points for, just for her to give me two points back. She would say that my drafts were good and then give me a really bad final grade.
Easy class for me and she is really nice.
This teacher was absolutely terrible. She did not care that I had a collapsed lung and would not relieve me of my assignments. This teacher has terrible instructions. She grades aggressively hard. Its almost impossible to pass this class. I guarantee every one in the class had red on their paper no matter how good you did she is nit picky.
Jut finished her class and wish I could take her 1302 class really good teacher and funny
She was terrible, made me feel dumb when asking for help and always redirected me to instructions, when thats why I was messaging her in the first place to get a better understanding of instructions for assignments. Very tough on grading, its almost as if you had to be perfect with everything. I guess she forgot what it was like to be a student.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is very rude and does not care about her students, she belittled me and made me feel very discouraged. She did not grade base off of the rubrics she posted, it is almost impossible to get any type of passing grade from her.
She is the worst possible person to have ever existed. She is rude, condescending, and absolutely unhelpful. She will always refer you back to your book if you have a question, instead of helping you herself. I would not recommend taking this class with her as your instructor. She does not know what she is doing!
Good teacher and textbook helpful assignments clear. Follow directions to get A. She answers email fast.
She really cares. Take this class if you are a serious student. Beware the parrot .
I wish I had Professor Ruiz as my instructor when I took my first ENGL-1301. Her way of teaching is amazing. Just follow the instructions, listen to the audio she posted and take notes. If you listen to her feedback and make the recommended correction, you will be fine. For ENGL-1302 definitely I will take Professor Ruiz again.
Good students reallylove this class. Slackers do not like this teacher. I did not like it at first, but when I worked harder I did really well and ended up with an A.
I could not find a place to rate her class so I am doing it here . Great class and I learned a lot. My native language is Spanish and I feel my English is a lot clearer now. She helps a lot when I ask.
I wish I had this class earler. I am older and found this class easy and helpful once I figured out how Canvas works.
Turned out to be a good class and I actually had fun writing about Ted talks, Texas problems, saving social media after soemone dies and so on. Peer review took too much time but I decided it really helped. I got a good grade because the teacher helped but also because of classmates' comments.
Shes rude, unhelpful, and an extremely tough grader. If you as her for feedback is it extremely vague or she just doesnt respond back at all. If I ask for help on an assignment or project she either says refer to your textbook or doesnt respond back. Do NOT take her class. I do all my work and I try to improve myself but its not enough for her.
This Professor is very rude. Degrades you! Nothing is perfect for her. She does not give positive feedback. She has no emotion and thinks shes perfect yet some of her directions have misspelled words! Do NOT take her course! She will rip you to shreds!
Professor Ruiz is extremely Rude and will stick everyone with plagiarism warnings. Every person and every single paper. She does not show you herself how to fix issues. Even when helping shes very vague and snot nose about it! Do not take her class. You wont pass and she will degrade each and every assignment. Your lucky if you pass with a C!
Mrs. Ruiz is completely vague and rude. She tells us to look back in the book, but doesnt explain specifically on what we have done wrong and does not give advice on how to fix it, just always tells us to look in the book. Anytime Id ask for help go back and look in the book any former teacher I have had would actually help their students learn
Worst professor I have had. She says one thing for instructions and they she changes her mind on the draft. She ignored me on two different occasions for three days. I am about to fail because of the changes all the time. I have sent my writing to the writing center countless times and have still failed. She is not worth the money or the time.
In the beginning I made decent grades. I did take the 6 week course and so much was due in a fast pace. Would take forever to respond to emails. When asked for clarifying directions I would get refered back to the book. I would include everything she asked for in her directions yet still made under 80 on my papers. I always listened to get lectures
I couldn't stand her. She was terrible
I just left the Navy and ended up in Ruiz's class. It was well designed and I learned a lot. I enjoyed picking topics I was interested in and found her open minded but always pushing me to prove my argument with evidence. Which is good.
AVOID HER AS A PROFESSOR!!! I had asked her questions about assignments and was ignored. The one time she did answer, she belittled me and discouraged me. She would redirect me to the instructions when I had any questions. She was not helpful. She does not care about her online students.
She treats everyone as if we are stupid and her feed back doesnt help you learn. She doesnt teach 10/10 DO NOT recommend
Great class and I am glad to get it done. I did not want to go to class every day because feeling lazy during pandemic, but I did and it paid off with a A grade.
Her online class was clear and I liked the schedule because I had to work during the week. She is great helping you with drafts. The final exam seemed easy after the projects.
I do not recommend this professor at all. She grades very hard and doesn't understand that that was the first college english class a lot of us had ever taken. I was always so stressed trying to write an essay that was up to her standards but I never could. If you have a choice, do not take this professor!!!!
Online class for 1301 was easy for me and this professor really cares. I did have to work a little bit every day so it did not end up Sunday night and hurrying to turn things in. Great class!
She gave me very detailed feedback at the draft stage and even once the paper was finished. By the end of the class I really felt ready to move on. I am going to unvieversity next. Recommend to all who want to be ready for rest of college.
Great online class. I wish she was teaching 1302 next semester.
OMG, this lady is so nice and helpful. I did not know how to do any of this, and I loved her lectures and emailed her all the time. I love the textbook and will keep it for other classes. She really cares. I plan to be a teacher and she inspires me.
I liked that Ruiz is though, but she needs to realize this is a 1301 class. I felt like I did not learn because she treated the class as if we're stupid. She didn't respond to an email I gave before and gives very little feedback. I would get a bad grade and it didn't make sense as to why the grade was so low with the feedback she gave.
I took her 1301 class last year and her fairy tales class later. I thought her class was hard at first but I ended up making As in both classes. I am really glad she expected a lot because I am going to get my nursing degree and I know I can do the writing now.
Online class and her lectures help a lot. She was always checking on the class. highly recommend!
More writing like my senior, but at the college level. She takes it seriously. I learned a lot and am ready to transfer to Aggieland soon.
My brain developed in this writing class. I learned how to think thrings through. She talks a lot about brain development and I could see why. Great professor.
This professor gives great feedback and I loved this class. I have been out of school for a while.
This online class is laid out ahead of time and easy to follow. She posts a lot of lectures and little announcements about how things are going and that really helps. This is the first online class I have really enjoyed.
This is a great class online because everything was clear and she has a lot of lectures that help. I also like the textbook, short and sweet. I made a good grade and I'm not even much of a writer.
I put this class off until I was ready to graduate because I was scared. This teacher was fun and caring and organized. Her Texas drawl is funny when she gets going with the lecture. REcommend.
Lots of writing. I did not like that until I figured out it was helping. I wish she was teaching my development writing class at the same time--she was really good. You can tell she cares about students' futures and she doesn't put up with laziness.
This class was challenging, but I made an A. It was good to have something due every three or four days so I did not put it off until too late. Her comments on the draft were great. I have never had a writing teacher spend that much time on my drafts.
recommend her class
Awesome
8 week class was really good and I am glad she is professional--last teacher I had for 1301 didn't care about my writing but this one does.
Professor Ruiz is great! You must read the syllabus carefully and follow her instructions for writing assignments. If you need help, use the Stone Writing Center. Keep it professional with her; she makes it clear she is your teacher, not your friend. She wants you to do well, but you must put in the time and work to pass her class.
DO NOT TAKE The first thing we did was an introduction to the class that she makes incomplete because of length but the length requirement was 300 words and my reply was 469 and then put out I did have to zap with an "incomplete"didn't get the work in on time, or had too many mechanical language errors to be considered beginning college writing".
Will call on you in class, will kick you out of class if you didn't do the reading, pop quizzes, three papers a week, wont grade until the next month and will claim you've learned nothing in her class after grading a month-old paper, no emails responded to, won't care if you're sick, good content to write about, but the professor is not worth it.
I liked having three topics to choose from on each project. With this class she grades fast and often gives 24 hours to fix a problem and resubmi so u have to check email. She treats everyone equally when we talked among ourselves about grading. Good teacher
She helped me so much! I was scared because I have not been good at English, but she explains and let me practice in class while she was standing there to be sure I got it. Good teacher.
Heed the warning of others about this class. I had 4.0 at Del Mar before taking her class. Here are the facts about this class: Yes, there is 1 or 2 papers each week. Yes, she grades harshly Yes, she does not post a rubric of what she wants. Yes, her instruction take hours to read and are often confusing. and Yes, you should not take this class
Take this writing teacher. I learned so much stuff. Her talks about different kinds of writing and rhetoric and examples are interesting and I shared them with family and friends. Just do what the syllabus says to do, and youll be good
I think I will have an A. I didn't like the strict attendance policy, but my grades came up and it was worth it. She really seems to care. Sometimes I think she has too much fun teaching.
Good at teaching online and always sending comments and posting lectures. Always responded to me the same day. I don't like taking classes online but this was good.
really inspiring teacher and i learned a lot she does a lot of conferencing and was always asking students to meet with her about their papers. I met with her a lot and did great. It really helped to talk about my ideas and figure out if my argument would work
I am an older student in the technologies and back to get more training. Professor was very supportive of students not doing the traditional academic stuff. I learned things about basic communication that are already helping me at work. I like the fact that immature students kind of drifted away after a few weeks so they didn't slow us down.
I took Professor Ruiz during summer 2 and was disappointed in the class experience. I had some difficulties with the class and she refused to work with me in the slightest. I had a 4.0 GPA before I took this class and was forced to drop it to save my GPA. Don't take this professor. Her instructions were confusing and unclear, very frustrating.
I took this professor during summer 2 and the very first week I already had a 19 in the class. I completed the assignments to the T and she gave me a FLAT OUT 0! She gave me no credit. She had an essay due every single week. She was also not willing to tell me what I was doing wrong plus her instructions were very confusing.
Took Ruiz for Summer 2 and she is a no-excuses professor. She can be harsh and the class is very difficult if you do not prioritize her assignments. Many opportunities to receive help, and I advise utilizing it since her directions are usually unclear. She expects you to brainstorm and analyze more complex ideas rather than write black and white.
Good online class. She was always helping me. She clearly cares.
Her online class is great. I am just out of high school. I realized fast I was not used to reading directions, articles, textbooks etc. Did not do it during the. pandemic. This made me think the class was hard but once I got used to it I actually made an A. Glad I had this teacher because I want to be a nurse. Competitive.
Save your time and do not take this class.
Terrible professor, her way is the only way, if you have another point of view other then hers it is wrong, if you miss class and have a valid reason she doesn't care because her class is supposed to be your #1 priority according to her. DO NOT TAKE!
I have extremely mixed feelings about this professor. Her feedback and lectures often had backhanded remarks or condescending comments about her students, and it seems impossible to meet her standards. The class was not horrible, but extremely mentally draining. She should be teaching English 1302 with how high her expectations are.
I do not recommend this class. Ms Ruiz leaves extremely condescending feedback if she leaves any feedback at all. She will give you incomplete for either making the smallest mistake or following her instructions that she did not proofread herself. She does not value students time and her class is extremely draining.
U can tell she spends a lot of time on the class online. Some friends didn't follow instructor's directions but I did fine and plan to take another class with her. Be ready to read and discuss. She is big on talking with you about your drafts.
This teacher is funny and cares a lot. She also wants it done right and gives extra chances to learn. Sometimes I was irritated by some of the other students who were not trying in class, like they were still in high school. Definitely recommend. Fight club topics were something to look forward to.
Prof. Ruiz was one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Throughout high school English was easy and I always passed. Prof Ruiz is such a tough grader and will deduct points for the smallest things. She can be very rude and condescending when giving feedback to you. She wants you to do it her way or no way. This class truly took the life out of me.
I learned so much about high school vs college writing and the articles we read were all interesting. Very helpful teacher.
Mrs .Ruiz is one of the very few worst instructors I have ever had in my life! She gives lil to no feed back basically says read my instructions again and figure it out for yourself. Will not instruct you in any actual way ,you will be have to decipher everything for yourself cause she is not going to tell you or help. She is a vague instructor
A really great teacher who gives really clear directions and is always willing to help with drafts. Class discussions really blew my mind and got me wanting to read news. She cares a lot and does not want anyone to give up.
I realized I was distracted and could not even read and understand articles. I did not even realize that. This class taught me to manage my time and avoid distractions. her siren song stories are funny. College writing is different and I had to learn to change some old high school habits. Would take again and recommend.
Would not recommend this professor.
Good teacher. I was lazy, LMAO, and did not want to edit and change my papers. Once I stopped being that way and revised, I was proud of my papers. It's work. But I like the teacher and she really cares. She does not put up with immature bs, I will say that.
Horrible instructions. Bad feedback as well, and is never clear about anything unless you email her and beg her to clarify. If you don't want to have several breakdowns sobbing over class do not take this one!! Also she never stops talking about Ai. We get it.
The professor is challenging but fair. Takes a no-nonsense approach, but really cares about student success. unstuck study ai was a game-changer for essay prep - highly recommend using it!
This woman was the worst professor I've had. She is rude and always thinks she's right…. It is okay to be wrong sometimes. She doesn't know how to assign assignments and will give you a zero if you can't access it. 0 out of 10 would never recommend this professor even to my worst enemy.
this is definitely a very difficult class so please be careful for what you're getting into. If you are a busy person I would also not recommend this class, your time isn't valued here.
I'm usually not the type to do this, but I want to warn others about this professor. I do not suggest taking this class if you're someone who likes to ask questions or needs help to achieve a certain grade. Professor Ruiz is incredibly uncaring and often speaks to students with a level of disrespect that is hard to overlook.
She posts long rambling lectures that mean absolutely nothing and wants you to pull paragraphs out of an article that has no substance. She will also fail your essay if it does not entirely fill the page. If you are looking for constructive criticisms, she will NOT give it to you, instead she will vaguely post about it in front of the entire class.
Girl. First of all her instructions are INSANELY detailed, and if you mess up even a little she will fail you. She's extremely critical and downright petty. If you make a mistake she will shade you in front of the entire class instead of trying to help you. She wants to be treated with respect yet she doesn't treat her students with any at all.
Be prepared to be a mind reader. She will ask you to write how you interpret or view an article, then tell you you're wrong. You can try your best to follow her instructions, but she will find a way to point out what you did wrong and criticize it. Dont fall for her praise of furthering your education. If this is her 1301, I can't imagine her 1302.
First of all, I don't think she realizes that we have other classes we're working on papers for, like?? She clearly does not care about your time. Secondly, she is PETTY, she constantly acts condescending & rude. Third of all she is a very very harsh grader. Mess up a single tiny detail and I guarantee she'll fail you or make you redo it entirely.
Run while you still can.
She states that her class will need 3 - 5 hour weekly like any other class but that is a lie! She expects you to spend all your time doing little assignments that make simple essay confusing and longer than needed. She states how she was up at 3am doing her school assignments but the 3am papers i am giving her are not good enough for her. RUN!
I will never recommend this professor to anyone. Will mark as incomplete or late if there is something that you did not do, even if it is not stated in the directions. Only criticizes in her feedback, never has feedback that will actually help me get better at writing. It is her way or the highway, she has made me lose motivation for this class
Extremely rude to her students, overly critical, and demanding. She does not care about your education, if she did she would actually teach instead of only criticizing and belittling you. You're truly lucky if you receive anything higher than an 80.
She's okay I'd prefer someone more willing to work with you individually, she really only does so when you start essay 3. Other than that I don't like how every other week there's an assignment due Sunday.
Based on my personal experience, I would advise incoming students to approach Professor Ruiz's class with caution. I found her to be consistently unhelpful and her demeanor often seemed quite rude. Future students might want to consider these aspects when making their course selections to ensure a more supportive learning environment.
Started off okay, but then became extremely nit picky about work. Her instructions are crazy long and very exact. If you don't follow them, she'll make you redo the entire assignment over. It's either 100 or nothing for grades. Most people get a C in this class. Save yourself and get another professor even if you have to pay for it yourself.
Definitely be very careful when doing her classwork. She leaves 0 room for error and if you mess up or aren't exactly perfect, she'll refer you back to directions or tell you to go to writing center instead of helping you herself. But it is possible to get a good grade, just be ready for a lot of work and a real challenge. Gives clear instructions
I don't think I have ever encountered a more pretentious person. She is not afraid to patronize you, speaking as though you are below her solely because this is a community college class. Her grading criteria is obnoxious, and she has even taken points off of my writing because I didn't follow directions she DIDN'T state in her endless paragraphs.
This woman managed to do the impossible; she single-handedly made me hate everything about writing.
DON'T TAKE!!
Trust the reviews, she's a tough grader. Even when she wants you to give her you're input and YOUR perspective, she'll tell you you're wrong. I don't get why she acts like she's teaching at an Ivy League school and we all have an IQ of 140+.
HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE!
DON'T TAKE! She gives too much directions; "do this, but don't do this, but do this, and make sure not to do this, but do this". She'll tell you to write about something and tell you you're wrong when she's asking for "personal experience". I don't get why her class is hard, it's literally community college and a beginner Eng class.
she's the worst professor ever!!! Will say one thing, you do it and then she'll tell you you're wrong. She says a whole lot of nothing in her lectures and then complains about everything you turn in even after doing what her long directions say.
I wish I could explain in 10-15 sentences how horrible this teacher is, but RMP sets a character limit. She's condescending, contradictory, and spends more time searching for AI in your paper than providing valuable feedback. She'll also ask for your opinion then tell you you're wrong. It's a wonder why she's no longer at Baylor. Good luck
I thought I was a pretty good writer until I took this class. Apparently every single thing I turned in was vague and when I would redo the assignment with more depth I was “writing things she wasn't even looking for”. Can't stay on topic herself when assigning work.
Instructions are confusing and all over the place. She will tell you to do one thing in an assignment and expect you to assume to do it in another even if not mentioned at all. Very picky and demanding.
Possibly the most snarky and impossible professor to work. There's no room for ONE mistake even though she "preaches" for new writers she will give you a zero for not doing what she describes in her 5 paragraph long instructions. She will give little help online and demands you schedule something in person or go to a learning lab. Fiendish class.
