she's easy but you still learn, picks favorites, but will get mad at you if you argue with her, stay on her good side you'll be fine, a would take her again
She sucks as a teacher! You can't understand her, never know when things are due, and she favors students.

Terrible instructor. She was habitually late, sometimes even a 1/2 hour or more! Has favorite students and brags non-stop about how smart her family members are. Gives higher score for plagerism.
Always late, but tells students not to come to class if 10 mins late.Break's way too long and tells students to refer to the packet and scribner bk and see her at off. hrs. when they have questions,yet talk with some for a while on unrelated subjects.

Cannot talk to this teacher. She is an angry feminist and doesn't tolerate others' opinions. Her assignments are very unclear and difficult. She is often late and disorganized. Don't waste your time with this class.

THE WORST teach I have ever had! She is unclear in what she wants you to do, showed up late more often than not, if she decided to show up at all. Turned her into the dean, wrote a letter complaining.

Completely awful teacher! She is very unclear, and picks her favorites. She's usually late and almost never at her office during her office hours. She does not return emails nor noicemails.
Yet another bad review… Drop the class ASAP! Obvious in her favoritism. Choice of text was unappealing and had a hidden agenda for the class, ENG 1A is about grammar and writing, not tolerance and cross-cultural development.

Prof. Kareemi's EWRT 1A class was by far the worst experience I have had at De Anza. Her style of teaching is unclear and the grades she assigns students seem to be based less on writing ability and effort put forth than the amount of ***-kissing imbued upon her. Take Prof. Smart-Slothower instead.
Good luck taking an English class from someone who barely speaks it. She grades papers randomly (smartest kids were getting C's). If you ask her to explain the grade, she just BS's an answer.
I hate this teacher...all she talks about is her stupid daughter and her family. blah blah blah blah blah...she never explains anything. she says everything is in the blue packet...and then never explains any of the dates or anything. DONT TAKE HER...shes HORRIBLE!!!

This teacher is so awesome, she will go out of her way to help you, forget the numb nuts who revieved her, the only teacher at my time at De Anza that i actually learned anything! If you read, do the essays, want the A, you will get it, it is true this class isnt for idiots, you get what you earn.
True...at times she is late to class, but she actually wants to see her students do well..and she is willing to help outside of class if your're willing to go for help. As Smail said before you get what you earn.
she is very unclear, and does not grade fairly. When asked questions, she continues to make her material out of reach. She has interesting reading assignments, but thats as far as it goes. Writting for her was very frustrating for me, when ever I asked her questions about my essays she didnt answer
I do not recommend this teacher if you want to learn how to write. Her instructions are very poor and the class discussions are really lame. Spends to much time talking about her private life. Lot's of presentations! :-/ The only good thing about her, is that she let you redo all your essays.

This lady favors student, she doesn't give clear instruction, and thinks she knows everything. She may seem nice the first few days of class but after that...FIRE THIS LADY she doesn't know how to teach.
Great and wonderful teacher knows how to teach her subject. best teacher for me and those who do well but she is not there for lazy students. study hard then you get what you deserve. helps her students out.

Awesome teacher, very good, helps everyone that needs it. Willing to go out of her way, is fair, and most imnportatnly understnading; lets you make up work if you need to, she lets you make your own grade, f you work you get it! TAKE HER!!!

Extremely unorganized, unclear, unprofessional, and rude at times. Only an easy grade if she likes you. Don't take her if you can aviod it.
I had her at San Jose State and it was the worst experience of my life.For that brief moment in time I developed an extreme distatse for the subject as a whole. When I asked her questions in front of class she claimed I was questioning her authority and got in a fight with me in front of class. Thank god UCLA has no place for teacher's like her!
I'm taking her class now, and its horrible, complete disaster. We started with at least 30 students were down to 7. Its gotten to the point where i just rather shoot myself in the foot rather continuing going to her class. DO NOT take this class if listening and essay writing is a weakness for you. Shes really nice though
she is unclear and disorganized to the point where it destroyed her class. she is incapable of giving out simple directions - it took her 3 classes to teach us how to write essays her way.. come the due date, and half of us "did it all wrong". her daughter was in the class, and i suspect there was unfair treatment. avoid her if you can
BAD professor. Very disorganize and if your lucky and she like you, she will help you with your essay. But im the unlucky one, she's full of it. I don't recommend taking her. You will waste your money on her.
First of, she was put into being our professor on the first day because we were supposed to get someone else. I thought it was inconvient, and the fact is she is a horrible teacher. Everytime I entered the class, I felt emtremely stressed to even look at her. She has her favorites, so if you're not one of them then you're absolutely out of luck.

After seeing this site and seeing everyone else agree with me on her uslessness i decided that i need not say more than read the ratings before me. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS, i just happend to have to crash my classes and hers was the only one open, gee wonder, and ive learned my lesson on signing up for classes late
It's true what most other people say. She favors people, and I've noticed she doesn't reply to my emails - but she replies to her favorite kid. She doesn't try to learn names if she doesn't get a good first impression. Get ready for a long self-taught class if you have her. Pretty nice, rambles, digresses, and is disorganized. Make your choice.
Put it this way, she do not come her office hours most of the time, she do not respond to any emails, she is late to class most of the time, and most of all her class seems to be comminication but not EWRT 1A.
At first it was very confusing to understand what she wanted in her class, however she did explain as many times we needed until we would understand her concepts. We also learn lots about her Afghan culture. She is funny and open minded. I still remain in contact with her. Very helpful even after I took her class.
It's all about personal accountability and working for your grade. It's not hard to do well in her class, you just have to apply yourself. She's pretty unclear pertaining to what she wants in essays but if you ask her after class she always does her best to help out. She cares about her students and wants you to learn
The people before are CORRECT. She DOES have favorites. Students that talk to her after class, and attempt to get to know her, are active in class, and ask questions on papers. Those are the ones that get the highest grades. She is understanding, helpful, and very caring. Who would want a prof that care about their students beyond the classroom?
Oh my God I can't believe anyone would conciously complaint about her, to be honest she is too nice for all students if anything. i would take care as many times. The final papers is probably kind of hard because the the topics, other than that the class is too easy and the professor is way to nice in my opinion.

The class is pretty much self taught because all she ever seems to talk about is her daughters or other non relevant subjects.
If you want learn and get a good grade take her. She will teach you from the scratch. The Professor is very helpful to be honest. Furthermore her class is probably one of the eeasiest english class.

This teacher is ridiculous. I have NEVER had a problem with English, Ive always done very well in all my classes. This teacher makes it nearly impossible to. She is rude, forgetful, always late to class, and utterly useless when it comes to teaching. The structure she uses is insane. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. IT WILL RUIN ENGLISH FOR YOU.
This instructor is frequently late. She focuses on her favorites, so that if you are not one of them, you will most likely be ignored. She uses a packet that is more helpful than she is, and specifically stated that she grades on structure and not content. I love English but I dislike this class.
Shes Horrible, plays favorites and tells you to do stuff thats not even written on her syllabus. Save yourself the time and quit now before you have to Withdraw from the class like i did and get a W.

This professor is the WORST professor I've ever had in my entire life as a student. She is extremely unhelpful, bias, stubborn,etc. She is even very uncomfortable to be around. DO NOT TAKE her class if you actually want to learn writing.
Honestly, you have to TRY HARD in order to do well in her class and understand what she says. She doesn't want you talking because you WILL miss important information. English was easy for me, but this class subject was hard. She helped me, and understood that I had a job to juggle with school. She's lenient and very helpful if you try.

She picks favorites, her instructions are unclear & so is the class packet. She yammers on about irrelevant topics & her beliefs for the whole class period. Class time is spent talking about touchy subjects: religion, death, divorce. She easily offends the class with her beliefs & if she's questioned she gets offended. This is a very unfair class.
i admit she is very hard and you really have to put an effort, all my weekends were spent for this class but you learn a different way of writing. even though i was happy this class ended i learned alot of info. on the diff. subjects we went through. Take this class only if you really put an effort otherwise dont take it, you will be stressing.
Yeah, it's true. She had favorites. Talk and participate during discussions and feign being excited and you can easily be one of the favorites. People obviously got offended if they weren't the favorites but there was a reason for why they weren't. Do the work, try, you'll get an A. It's actually really easy to get an A.
Kareemi was the only English 1A teacher to still have more than 20 spots left. All other classes were full. On the 1st day, only 12 people registrered. Most were previously waitlisted. She is very vague with her assignment, and I feel like class is a general waste of time. There is little substance. Register EARLY so you can get into another class.

She picks favorites and gives them better grades. I haven't learned anything at all from this class. Pick a different prof when choosing this class. I hate her.
Avoid this instructor like the plague. Her instructions are vague, she becomes easily offended, and hates it when someone offers an opinion different from hers. She has her pets who will always earn the top marks. Get another instructor!
nice person, not very good teacher. don't buy scribner, you won't need it. do exactly what she asks for, just follow the structure she wants. if you disagree with her you'll get in trouble. gives out a big packet at the start of quarter that has everything, but packet is vauge/has typos. don't rely on email to find her. lots of in class discussions
Agree with others below, she is more conversational about her personal life from what I noticed. Did not learn a thing about English but she does expect you to figure it out. Definitely do not take if you may struggle with English writing and if you do decide to make sure you drop before it is to late like I did.She gets offended easily.
Very confusing and most all of the comments below are true, however, it is easy if you try. She picks favorites? So quit whining and BE a favorite. How? Do your work, engage in discussions, visit her office hours to clarify and most of all do not challenge her in class. It is just frowned upon in her mind. Figure her out and do what she wants=A+.
Do not join this class!! Even if its the only EWRT 1A class available. There is a reason for it. This teacher does not teach well! She assigns maximum number of essays and journals to be completed from complicated readings.She is extremely biased too. Never replies your emails, her lectures lack clarity.
she is a very nice teacher, very flexible and unfortunately some students take advantage of it. Do your assignment on time and she also let you to rewrite your papers which is a big plus for her. It is an easy and fun class, take it!
her classes are all discussions unrelated to hw and anything with class. never reminds u of hw so be aware yourself. very lenient on late work, gives alot of opportunities to turn things in. be on top of the readings, dont just sparknote it! pay attention in class when she goes over essay formats. overall boring class; lots of effort needed for A
She is a terrible teacher. She assigns a lot of different projects and does not explain them well. Very vague and confusing, but grades pretty easily.
Of my 2 years at De Anza, this is the only class I had to withdrawal from. This should speak volume. She is extremely poor in communication and helpfulness, and uses most of the class time to talk about completely irrelevant topics. I've never wanted to leave a class so early before because I felt like I was completely wasting my time being there.
You have to come to class or you will be dropped from the course (understandable), but she mostly talks about her personal life instead of ENGLISH! Biggest waste of my time. She's a very tough essay grader. If she ever gave us a test about her personal life, I would ace it. Class dropped. Retook it with a professor who actually teaches the subject.
Most of the class is based around flakey learning and her telling us about the million achievements that she has accomplished. According to her she has taught English to dozens of people, ended racial persecutions of pakis, and is a millionaire. I wish I was joking, probably the worst teacher I have ever. Save yourself and pick someone else.

Unprepared and late for class almost every single day of the week. We once has a take-home quiz which she stated that if we didn't do it, we would fail the class guaranteed, and we didn't even go over it nor turn it in after it was assigned. Easy to pass, but you will not learn a thing from her. Workshops are a requirement for the class. Avoid her!
She's really lenient about due dates because she forgets that she assigns things. Easiest way to get an A in her class is to catch onto what she likes (feminist, children, etc) and write about that. Very great professor and is very understanding. She helps and makes sure every student is on the right track. One of the best professors I have had.
Not a hard Class at all if you've come from a highschool with AP background. Yes work can come sporadically and a bit inconsistent due to her teaching style but if you do the work you get the A. Expect inconsistencies and if I could do one thing I would have just read all the short stories on time. Doing it all at the end is a pain.
Would recommend taking this Instructor for an English course.
I had her for 1A and she was great! Not only was she clear about the assignments, but she went over essay drafts with us and taught us how to do an outline and improve on essay writing. If you do the essays on time you can get an A. She also gives you a chance to rewrite your essay. She's awesome!

However, you MUST pay attention when she's showing you the proper format to write. She expects you to be precise, but grades fairly.
This is the only class for which I was compelled to write a formal letter to the administration. No point in repeating what other negative reviews have already said. From the perspective of a career professional, this class was a disgrace. Whether you care deeply about your education or not at all, stay away from this class at all costs.
I had her for EWRT 1A and I learned so much. Not only were the texts interesting but I really learned how to write an essay. She was clear with grading and gives you multiple chances to improve with peer editing. She also really cares about student success so she is accessible in her office hours. I want to take all my English classes from her!
I'm currently taking her and I love her class. I was nervous about taking English, but I actually love English after taking her class. The works we read were so interesting and the discussions were terrific. I'm expecting an A+ which I have never gotten in any class. If you do the work and show up to class, you'll do well!
Why does she have such a low rating? Her class was overall extremely easy and she's very passionate about the topics that she discusses. Her essay formats are different from what I've always learned & she's very particular about how she wants the essays. Quizzes are beyond easy, just do the readings(a lot btw). She's reasonable, I really liked her
She talks a lot and forgets about the assignments that she assigns. She is sensitive to people who interrupt her once in a while. Can't understand her writing when she grades papers and when she writes on the white board. She will eventually stop teaching class and talk about other things not related. Do not take her class.
