Khan stresses the importance of participation too much, when nobody answers his question he will stare everyone down until he randomly asks someone to answer. He gives no incentive to respond to his questions as he will continue to use whomever answered as a guinea pig for the following questions, even if you didn't volunteer. I would avoid.
I think he is a decent prof. He is not too harsh and ready to help if you are struggling. Khan used all the material from the textbook, so attendance isn't that important. You can study on your own and easily get above 80. His exam questions were very similar to those discussed in class and at the end of each chapter (half of them were the same)
Khan creates a classroom environment in which if you make a noise louder than your regular breathing he will call you out. Despite this, he heavily encourages participation but because of the horrendous environment no one ever does. It is not necessary to go to every class because you could quite easily follow along in the textbook. I did not enjoy
His classes are very uncomfortable. He wants everybody to participate but will often call people out in class, and makes answering questions very acquired. Seems to dislike his students and attendance in the class was terrible
New to UBCO, he won't last long... Incredibly boring lectures. Very difficult to understand him, which isn't his fault. His lecture slides were the demos that are given by the textbook company, so he pretty much just read the slides to us. Dont plan on using any electronics, or even whispering to your neighbour cuz you will get called out.
His lecture might be boring for some people because he explains everything slowly but that's what makes the material can be easily understood since we have a lot of graphs in this course. Come to class, pay attention, do assignments, and read textbooks, then A is in your hand.
Overall he is a nice professor. He gives detailed explanations and always ready to help.
The content was interesting as it dealt with theories of development in nations. Lectures were slow-paced which was helpful. Emphasis was placed on presentations and class participation. The midterm and the final exam were fair and study guides were provided to prepare for them. The paper required a lot of research. Overall, an interesting course.
his class is very dry and boring. the final is 50% of the final grade. rip.

VERY INTERESTING COURSE
Provide very useful materials. Caring
outstanding
very helpful outside class

NICE PRESENTATION
Not good
Great
liked very much
He is the worst prof I have ever had. The lectures are of no value just read the textbook. Takes attendance but there is no incentive to actually attend. Cannot explain the simplest of concepts effectively, but gets mad when nobody shows up to his lectures. Also the final was 60 multiple choice worth 50% filled with very obscure questions.
Make the lecture understandable to all all students
care a lot for students
lots of examples help to understand the lecture. practice questions really helpful
Just a genuine person. Legitimately cares for his students and makes an effort to answer questions inside and outside his class. Quizzes are really difficult though.
he is awesome.
Really amazing prof. At first it took about a week or two to get used to his accent but once you do he explains everything really clearly and won't move on until he is sure everyone understands the material. His quizzes, midterms and final were all really easy and as long as you do the readings and online assignments its a easy high mark.
Will take other courses again
Very helpful for job market
CARE ABOUT ALL STUDENTS
Amazing. Care student progress.
I'm convinced he writes his own reviews first off. He is okay, but the material is presented very slowly and is not engaging in any matter. Chapters are easy to read up on, and there are chapter quizzes weekly/biweekly that keep you going along the semester, that are easy to catch up on what has been covered - even if you don't go to class.
I would've failed if it wasn't for the quizzes. Hardest class I've ever taken. 50% final exam was extremely stressful. I only understood the concepts I was able to teach myself on my own time.
Khan is a good prof. His tests were always fair--not too hard, but not too easy either. Weekly quizzes were identical to the online questions that accompanied the text. Marking scheme was weekly quizzes, two midterms, and a final. My only complaint is that his lecture style can be boring if you don't find the course content inherently interesting.
His voice is a bit of a drone and if you are not interested in the topic it will be difficult to stay focused. My main complaint has to do with how much time he gave us to do the quizzes, many people talked to him about it and he did not adjust the time allowed for us to take the quizzes even when we had to start doing more involved formulas.
Great prof! He is always willing to help and loves to interact with students. Econ 101 itself is a fairly straightforward course. Khan takes his time in the lectures to make sure people understand the content.
He is a nice person, but the online quiz is tough and he only gave a little time to finish it, you won't have extra time to check since for every question you only get 1.5 min to think and some of them are even calculation questions.
Lectures are 50/50 in actually preparing you for tests. One week you get an A on the midterm and next week you fail the chapter test because the amount of knowledge he expects you to have on the subject is not proportional to what he teaches you. Not very helpful when reaching out to him, and he does not give enough time on tests. Not Recommended.
Great class! had lots of fun learning from Islam! He felt like an honest man not rich or poor, just an average joe like me, working clas fella, dream on Islam!
Unless youre super interested in the course, youll find his lectures extremely boring as hes pretty monotone. The questions he gives out on midterms are worded weirdly and doesnt give enough time on exams. He doesnt really teach, I had to teach myself everything. Wouldnt recommend.
I took this course as my arts elective as I thought it would be a GPA booster since many people will say that you can just read the textbook to do well, however do not be fooled. This course is quizz heavy and contains extremely hard tests. This is a memorizing course, so if you aren't good at memorizing, I don't recommend it for you.
i wasn't able to understand anything from his lectures tey were extremely boring and it was just him reading the slides. His lectures were not helpful at all. You need to teach yourself everything on your own. he is not helpful or understanding.
Dr. Khan is the most boring prof. He just reads off the slides during the lectures. He does not give enough time for quizzes and tests. His quiz, midterm, final are SO HARD. His voice is so dry and makes everything sound dreading. The time limit is just not enough for anything. They consist mainly of MC and 2 short answer. HIS QUESTIONS ARE SOO HARD!
Professor Khan was an excellent teacher, in my opinion. He explained concepts very well with examples and clear calculations. However, he was inaccessible outside class and wasn't always eager to answer questions outside office hours. He also didn't let us know what we missed on the final exam. Not very nice :/
Khan is not easily accessible to ask questions, I didnt know who my TAs were let alone that there were two profs for the course. His lectures are pretty tough to sit through especially it all being online so get ready to teach yourself the content. Make sure youre ready to put in the work to succeed in this class its not way
He is a good professor, who really cares about his students. He tries his best to accommodate the students with the best resources, but you will need to be active. Be attentive during lectures and read the textbook!
Prof Khan's video lectures are so boring he posts 4 to 5 videos per week each about 30-45 min and ONLY READS FROM THE SLIDE! Don't recommend taking this class with him at all I hated economics because of him. Be prepared to learn the material by your self
I can't tell you how absolutely lazy he was, perhaps he want to be efficient? He never taught us anything. Yes, you read it right, all he did was providing slides. In the live-session, he just literally read the question and answer of practice essay word-by-word. Never explain This is absolutely ridiculous, paying hefty fee for "google class".
Reads from slides during the lectures, and you can barely decipher what he is saying... Just read the textbook, it's way better than listening to the prof.
Prof Islam was great as far as I 'm concerned with well detailed lectures. However, be prepared to watch long pre-recorded lectures if the course is online and the weekly quizzes are pretty tough. Both mids and finals were pretty math heavy but do able
Not a crazy hard class or anything, stuff he gives for practice is generally on the test, weekly online quizzes were almost always harder than the test, lectures are so boring to watch, skip them, just read the textbook and the slides he posts.
He does not teach. He turns his three hours per week class into one forty minute "discussion period" that nobody attended. Instead you must read the chapter of the textbook and do a quiz every week. Eventually the midterm will come and you will probably be confused because he extrapolates beyond the text without teaching it.
Absolutely horrible professor. His lectures are almost 100% based off the textbooks. Questions for the midterm were confusing and grammatically incorrect and not enough essay practice questions were given. Do not take this class if you don't have to.
He is the reason why I hate econ. He basically copies info off the textbook into his slides and reads off them. Skip the lectures, just read the textbook. Also be prepared to encounter terms and concepts in assignments which doesn't appear in lectures or the textbook. If you have to take the class, pray you find another prof teaching it.
His lectures are terrible and slides are practically useless(picked straight from the textbook). Makes test and midterm questions incredibly hard to understand. Don't think he understands that a lot of people are taking his course as an elective and cannot put in the time that he expects. Be prepared to spend most your time on this course.
I have zero idea what happened in other people's semesters that they were able to give Khan a 5 star review in this class. He seems like a nice guy, but to call him a teacher at all--let alone a great teacher--is overly generous when all he does in narrate the textbook. Unhelpful lectures, midterm questions don't match midterm guide, etc... AVOID
Lectures pretty well but talks down on the students whenever they do not understand something. He seems to get frustrated when people don't understand the material. Decent assignments and the bonus tutorials are bad but a bonus is a bonus.
Not too difficult as some of the other reviews have said. But get ready to work, regularly. He gives bonus assignments and spreads out the grades with assignments, tutorials, and quizzes so everything is not test dependent. Lectures are not too great but first year econ tends to be book-heavy anyway. Attending office hours is helpful.
His lectures are soooo boring hes very monotone and not engaging at all. His tests are also very difficult and he doesn't give adequate time to complete quizzes/tests so you basically have no time to think you just have to guess and move on if you don't know the answers. The only good thing is that he has variety in what he grades on.
he simply read the textbook out load
awsome
The question he gives for preparing for the test is good for nothigng . This course is the last resort u should ever pick if u dont want to have a terrible grade
the final exam grade is muted and you dont know what did you do wrong on the final exam , you only see the final grade on SSC. If you still love your GPA , for god's sake, dont pick his courses
Horrible, horrible class structure. Your entire grade is off of 2 midterms and a final. All of which are fully depended on vague, poorly worded MCQs. Khan does very little to teach and just reads off his slides which are a skimmed version of a $100 book. So, just read the book instead. Did not allow us to ask questions regarding the final grade.
I had him for 101 - loved it. I am currently in his 360/345 courses. It is evident that he is very well-read when it comes to economics. The courses are challenging, require reading and preparation and that should be expected by students. He explains concepts thoroughly in his lecture videos&is available during his office hours. Awesome professor.
Don't take this class. He was super unreasonable during Zoom grading (think he asked someone to get an email from Zoom itself and the service provider when their screen flickered off a couple of times during a midterm or he would mark it as cheating). Also, his assignments and exams are poorly worded and confusing.
90% of the course's total grade falls on to one midterm and a final. Never discussed solutions to questions. Uses recorded lectures from 2019/2020.
Khan does a good job of explaining concepts thoroughly and is always willing to answer questions. His lectures aren't exactly exciting but if you do the reading and pay attention to lectures his grading is always fair. Content can sometimes be a bit dry and his lectures are not the most exciting. Overall I was happy with his course.
extremely rude and terrible lectures. Will ask you to answer questions and will interrupt you before you even speak.lost 8% on a quiz since his english was broken that even chatgpt4 interpreted it how we thought.Tells us not to come to class if we arent paying attention but takes attendance when all he does is repeat whats on the board word for word
khan is living in a fantasy world. His quizzes and tests are very time restriving, go to his office hours and he can't solve the same problems in the given timeframe His quizzes have zero flexibility for scheduling and thinks your only responability is his class. He expects you to answer the questions with 100% precision. Right from the textbook.
quizzes are hard but tests are easy
very accessible out of class, if you put in the effort you will succeed. go to office hours, he goes through the whole test with you.
Slow explanation of obvious material. Doesn't follow the newest research of the subject
You must spend at least $100, of your own money, to take this course, for a measly %10 of the grade. This class honestly is not hard but prepare to become a statistic as the sectional average since 2020 floats around %65. Please take a different elective I am begging you.
His class was not engaging, hard to understand his heavy accent, and has poor lecture structure. He spent most of the time going over the easiest of concepts looking for someone to answer, then flew over complicated ideas without any thought. Do not take this class unless your major depends on it, you will not enjoy it.
In all my years, I have never had a class as bad as this. I learned more from home reading the textbook in 20 minutes than I had learned in all of his course lectures. I find economics interesting but this teacher made it so much harder than it needed to be. I beg of you all, DO NOT take this class unless you want wasted time and poor grades.
ok so i would come on here and complain that i cant understand him but thats not fair so ill just talk about how he spends half his lecture looking for someone to answer his questions, overexplains simple concepts and blows over hard ones. MUST read the textbook to understand anything that we actually need to know.
i almost got reported to the dean for doing an iclicker at home. i joined the class late and didn't have time to read through the syllabus on my own time, so i skimmed it and i must have missed the part that said that it's an issue of academic integrity. i was sick in bed so i did the clicker from home and i almost got reported. wild.
This man has made me cry hysterically on multiple occasions. I don't understand how yelling at your students to answer questions that don't even make sense is teaching. Be prepared to hear the word “Why?” a lot… He has the audacity to brag about teaching this course for 15 plus years when he should have retired longggggg ago.
I would never recommend this Prof to anyone yelling at students when they don't understand saying things like "can you not read numbers". making us feel dumb. On top of that the Econ help is the hours of the class so theres no way to get extra help. Try to avoid this prof if you can.
He uses clickers as quizzes and they're usually a chapter behind. His assignments are also usually a chapter behind of what he's currently teaching. His handwriting is terrible and his graphs that he draws on are gibberish.
I've had Khan for 101 and 345. He clearly cares abt student success and is always available to meet outside of class time. His classes rely heavilyyy on the textbook so make sure you read them closely and complete all the review questions, and you'll be fine. Definitely a lot of work, but if you actually care abt the course content you'll enjoy
Great prof. Knows subject, knows how to teach it in different ways to different people. Very easy class, and because I had experience, it felt like he taught very slowly at times, but it helped to reinforce information. I could tell it helped students new to the subject as well.
Really heavy accent; can't understand what he's talking about. Awful handwriting as well; can't understand what he's writing.
This class is a bunch of propaganda. You dont even need to be in his lectures to pass the class/ do good. All he does is waste your time and doesnt teach for anything. Can barely understand him and he expects all of us just to know. Doesnt know how to communicate let alone respond to emails. Doesnt use canvas properly. Doesnt know how to use canvas
It's hard to understand him, he is a ok teacher but you kinda just have to teach yourself most of the material through the textbook. But he post great midterm outlines and the textbook has practice quiz's which is helpful. But overall it's just a test heavy course, and a lot of readings.
Professor Khan Islam assigns an overwhelming amount of reading, much of which doesn't connect to exams. He often complains that students don't like economics instead of teaching clearly. The workload feels like three classes in one, and the textbook is full of unnecessary commentary.
Khan knows what he teaches and he is happy to help you in his office hours and cares about his students. Great Econ prof.
To keep it real his lectures are very boring, the textbook is awful but its required for weekly quizzes, and the midterms are worded differently then anything else in the course. But... our lord and savior Khan is a very reasonable and respectful prof. He re-weighted our midterms to save us and he is very helpful and understanding in office hours.
Dr. Khan Islam tells you exactly what to study for every midterm and answers every question until it's clear. If you pay attention, look things up, and put in basic effort, you'll do well. He wants you to succeed. Most low reviews come from students who talk through class, ignore his guidance, skip the work, then blame him instead of themselves.
Midterms are so much harder than the materials. Quizzes are literally weekly and so much different from lectures. If I was a quitter I would've quit.
Professor Islam gets a lot more hate than necessary, his intro ECON class is all based on the text given on Pearson so its a guaranteed pass if you read it. Yes, there is a weekly Iclicker quiz, which i get can be annoying to go to class for, but the whole point of school is to go to class and learn so I do not see it as much of an issue.
A lot of the reviews on Professor Khan are negative and from people who don't pay attention in class for the most part. This professor is caring, and gives clear expectations for tests, quizzes and finals. READ THE TEXTBOOK, go to office hours, and dedicate some time. It is not a difficult course if you pay attention. He is a good prof.
Good prof, his lectures are very followable and clear. He cares about his students and gives really helpful feedback!
A great professor. He likes to explain concepts with examples, and genuinely cares about student's grades. He also encourages participation in class, even though it is not graded.
Bad at pretty much everything. Just reads off his slides has no compassion and always angry . He has a thick accent too so it makes it just that little bit harder to understand. I mean... he can't teach anyways so there's not much to be understand. Studying on your own is easier. Unfortunately econ majors will see him a lot.
Great professor. His lectures were slow in pace so that it is easy to digest. if you will take his class, reading the textbook is very important, which is something that he also recommends.I do not understand people who do not like his class. If you just do the readings (not long btw), you will do fine.
Please take literally anyone else, he wears open toed sandals with no socks and wiggles his toes while lecturing, its very weird. He thinks he's really funny but he's not and if it seems like no one is paying attention he will cold call, look engaged or it will be you next. He did change the weight of our midterms which was nice of him, for once.
Not bad. Course gets tough; explanations are decent, but read the textbook. Practice and MyLab are similar to exams, which are fair. Clicker is 10%—my biggest regret as I scored low. Clicker and MyLab require keeping up, which can be hard. Only take if required or very committed. He's friendly in office hours and explains well in class/OH.
Goat. Provides lots of practice problems before tests. Very nice if you go to office hours, only negative is his tests are pretty hard.
Doesn't explain well, very unclear. Test questions are phrased weird and got very difficult. Gets mad a lot if no one knows answer and points out people when no one knows the answer. Just overall hard to understand and would not take again
It is difficult to understand sometimes with all respect. Also no one wants to be there and he yells at everyone also iclicker
harsh grader
340, not 345. He was clearly passionate about teaching it, the content is from textbook so easy to follow. Shifted weightage of midterms so best midterm is weighted higher. patiently answers in OH. Midterms were doable and similar to practice given , mostly MCQ's. attendance mandatory for iclicker, final hard content wise but fair, so study hard.
I think a lot of the people giving him bad reviews are either mad about their grade or just racist. I didn't find him hard to understand. He provides practice problems that are similar to what's on the test. He goes over the long answer questions in the review classes and they're nearly identical. He genuinely cares about students doing well.
Unlike other reviews, I didn't find him hard to understand. He genuinely seemed to want to see the whole class do well, and he ended up changing the weighting of the midterms to benefit everyone's overall grade in the course. The textbook platform has all the resources you need to succeed in the course if you attend all lectures and pay attention.
