Boring. Makes you go to class by giving you a "bonus" 5% for attendance. Just get someone to sign it for you. Honestly, the 5% is not worth sitting through his boring lectures. Learned most through textbook. Found out the following term that the "bonus" actually means he took a mark out of 105 rather than 100.
The best prof I had so far at Ryerson, maybe the beginning of the lecture is boring, but he give a clear summary and example at the end of the lecture

He might be serious and hard, but he makes you a professional engineer, and at the end of the semester, he will help u (So Much), I like his style. P.S he cracks a lot of funny jokes which I find motivating and brings up interest in the course. I hope he teaches us in third year.
Great professor. Does many examples in class to help the students understand the theory he teaches. Very funny at times. Assignments are useful in helping prepare for the final. If you study you will get a good grade.
Study hard, he's a hard prof but fair.
Hard Prof. Likes to make silly jokes. Gives time consuming assignments that needs about 15 hours to solve or 4 hours to copy from a friend each week. Makes the course very hard

Half of the lecture consists of him complaining about the class with comments such as, "this is a Mickey Mouse question" and "if you don't understand this now, you might as well drop out of my class". Assignments will take an entire day to complete.. Attendance matters if you're looking for a bump in your grade at the end of the semester.

Overall a better prof than is said to be. His midterm is borderline impossible but he makes up for it with a good final. His assignments will take you a whole day to do but are harder than some of the questions on the final and midterm. Funny guy but somewhat difficult to understand.
Absolutely terrible. He's constantly giving life lectures instead of teaching! He even mocks students who do dare to answer his questions in class. His tests are ridiculous, makes no sense and no one knows whats happening. If everyone is failing, it's because you're a bad prof.

He is very strict, and by the books. If you don't attend the lectures -- you will fail (just warning you). The midterm and final were fairly difficult even when we knew what was going to be on it. He does bell-curve at the end. The tutorials are pretty helpful, make sure you practice HIS in-class examples before any other Qs.

Assignments are really long and exams are quite difficult but not that difficult. If you know your stuff, then you're good. He doesn't explain some parts clearly so self studying is a must. In the end he's a decent prof.
Get ready to work hard and put effort. He is a strict professor who wants you to do good. He is not friendly to students. His teaching style is old. Although he is extremely knowledgeable about his subject, he creates a huge teacher-student barrier. Solve his in-class Qs, assignments and lecture problems and you can do fine.

Here is everything you need to know about this poor excuse of a human being: his teaching style will only appeal to those who have studied abroad first (ie south asia - im bengali im telling you this honestly). Although intimidating at first, Dr. Hossains classes are well taught. He tells exactly what questions will be on his tests albeit they are pretty long and marked strictly. But if you put the work and attend and listen to him, it is an enjoyable class.
His teaching way is ok. He will pass mean comments in the class. He has an ego problem. I will never have him for another course.

He's test is impossible to finish.
I am enrolled in CVL420 and the material is not too hard to learn. If the effort is put in, you will understand the course material. However, with Dr. Hossain being ur prof it's nearly impossible to succeed in the course bcuz he gives exams that are really long and u will have no time to finish. He marks strictly, so your exam marks will be low.
Extremely tough midterms. The course is already hard but he makes it impossible to pass with a good grade. All the positive comments are fake by the way. He does not teach anything useful in the class. All he does is waste the class time to say stupid stories.
Dr. Hossain is really strict but has nice personality. At first, he is really intimidating but if u give him proper respect and attention then everything will go easier. He is a very caring professor he solved problems as much as possible. Even though the problem is often time long and complex he makes sure he finishes it. I highly recommend him.
I took classes with him 3 times. I had bittersweet memories with him but will always be remembered. Let me tell you one thing he cares and remembers all his old students. I found him really strict in 320, in 420 he became harsher, then in 313 things got changed: became really different person, much nicer and caring. will always be missed forever.
Wahho!!! Good professor. Ryerson doesnt have good quality professor. But he is much better than anyone. All students attend his lectures and yeah solves lot of problems. Talks a lot but once u will graduate miss him a lot. Seniors used to tell that but never believed it. But now I do agree. Respect is the only thing that he wants.
Excellent Professor
Dr. Hossain is a great prof. Although he says irrelevant stuff, gives unnecessary life (and even dietary!) advice regularly, he's awesome at what he does. 420 is a FUNDAMENTAL course. So you have to study hard and he makes you do that. So if you are not prepared to do that or you just don't enjoy Strength of Materials, you won't like him obviously!
Do not risk taking this course with him even if you need it for the next semester just dont. his midterms and exams are super difficult, you will run out of time to finish it. there is no such thing as A.
Its almost impossible to get a good grade in this class. His lecture classes are not too bad but his exams are impossible to finish and the level of difficulty is higher than the textbook challenging problems. Also for sure you will run out of time to complete all the questions on the exam. Furthermore, he disrespects students.
Taking CVL 320 and 420 with this prof gets you ready for a straight 50%-60%grade. If you want to ruin your cgpa then I really recommend this prof.

He is just the worst prof have ever taken a class with. I am a straight A student and studied way harder for this class than any other. Studied the whole book but still ended up with my first B; the tests and exams were not bad but ridiculously long to the point you can't finish even half of hem. His grade won't reflect your hard work. Avoid him.

A Professor, I really like. He taught me well, explain concepts clearly, a professor who is keen to teach students not for getting cheap praise, he puts students to challenge for learning which I really liked. Fortunate to have him as a teacher and I am proud for that.
Midterms and exams are so tedious that if you are doing the course in the summer, you will not pass since it is only "meant for students repeating the course". Only 9 of the 30 students enrolled in the summer 313 course passed the midterm according to the TA

Why does all the positive comments use the same word "impartial" over and over as if written by the same person?
A lot of ppl talking crap about my guy anwar but hes rly not bad, its a difficult course and he makes you put in the effort to get a good mark. He cares about his students and pushes them hard to help them learn the material, if any course is gonna prepare you for the future its the class(es) you have with him.
If you think Dr. Anwar Hossain midterms are too difficult and unfair, then structural engineering is not for you.
Ryerson Civil Engineering has gone too soft over the years. Ryerson needs more professors like Dr. Hossain to filter out the real engineers from the ones who don't have what it takes. If you think Dr. Hossain's exams are too dificult, consider switching over to Buisness Administration.
Best Prof at Ryerson
You cannot call yourself smart or say that you have any of the required thinking or problem solving skills of an engineer if you get anything less than a B in any of Anwar Hossain classes
Ryerson civil eng students are so used to doing past exams on MEGA and getting the same questions again on their exam that whenever they do one avergely challenging exam like Prof. Anwar's, they start complaining and writing petitions to the Dean lol
Anwar is a good teacher and provides you with challenging problems comparable to what you will find on your exam. However the volume of questions coupled with the difficulty makes it near impossible to finish in the time allotted. Practice speed running questions as this prof is unavoidable if you're in CVL.
CVL 420 is not an easy course but Anwar makes it 10 times harder. His lectures are useful and you should not skip his class. Do not waste your time working on the textbook problems and study the examples he gives during his lecture.
Difficult prof but highly respectable. Only students who fully understand how structures behave and perform will excel in his courses. The ones who don't understand, keeps complaining saying it is not fair and then they switch over to transpo.
In 320 and 420 the exams are so long that you can never complete them. He grades tough. WHEN SOMEONE ASKS HIM IF HE PUT THE EXAM FAIRLY, HE SAYS YES EVEN IF EVERYONE IS FAIL. Try to pass it in winter otherwise youll stress yourself double in summer. You dont wanna waste your one year due to this course. Get 60%, def getting into structural.
His midterms are extremely hard and unfinishable in the required time. He's a really hard marker. The class average for his midterms are always in the 20s. He is also very rude to students. Unfortunately, you have to take his 420 class to complete second year.
He is very knowledgeable, but he has the worst communication skills with students! Very tough grader, he barely gives partial marks. Make sure to attend his lectures and office hours. Practice his lectures and do not waste your time practicing textbook.
CVL 320 is not a difficult course if you follow his slides and attend his lectures if you want to. The quizzes and assignments are straight from the textbook so it ain't hard. However, his final exam is long, but the questions are doable. Just keep in mind that if you get part of a question wrong, you will get 0 for the whole question...
All positive reviews are written by him or people that work for him. He is possibly one of the most miserable people you would meet in your entire life. His midterm has only TWO long questions. His own TAs can't solve any of those problems properly let alone finishing it under 2 hours. His final exam is more fair.
He's a very tough grader, you can't finish his exams! He's so harsh on students. Try to practice his lecture examples NOT the textbook, cause the textbook is useless comparing to his level of difficulty.

Dr. Hossain is amazing and has an effective teaching style different than other professor. He inspired me to learn. Today, I am in a position only for him. This is the best prof I have had in all of civil eng. Make sure to attend his lectures, understand concepts, and do many practice midterms/finals from previous years and you will do well in his class. For 420 he marks the midterms very hard but then much better on the final. He is strict but fair. His class will be tough but rewarding when done.
Anwar is a great teacher but many students give him a bad rating since they do poorly in the class. The exams are very difficult especially the midterm. Make sure to go to class and understand the problems he solves in class as they would be the level of difficulty expected on the exams.

Dr Anwar is the hardest civil engineering professor. He marks absolutely hard. His tests are hard which cannot be completed in 2 to 3 hours. His handwriting is really messy and hard to read. His mood alters from nice and friendly to angry and rude every day.

Dr. Hossain is one of the few passionate professors at Ryerson. He's excellent at explaining concepts and does good examples in class. Be prepared for the midterm and final, it isn't uncharacteristic that half the class will botch the midterm.
Dr Anwar is hands down the worst civil engineering Professor at TMU. He doesn't care about students and is very full of himself. He marks extremely hard and makes the class extremely hard to pass. He randomly starts bragging about himself in the middle of the lectures. He has no sympathy or respect for students.
Professor Anwar is demanding but engaging. The exams are challenging, but attending class and using resources like the textbook and unstuck study can really help prepare. If you put in the work, you'll learn a lot from this course.
I can't lie Anwar is overhated. Don't get me wrong he's not the best prof in the world but the other reviews made me very scared of him when he's actually not to bad if you actually do your work. Lock in during tutorials, do ur homework and practice old exams and you should be fine
Had Anwar for CVL 320/CVL 420. Terrible man. One of the worst professors in the Civil Eng. Unfair marker, extremely hard, rude comments in class, and bases marks on connection with students which is unjust. The professor has major high ego at his big age. He continuously fails students even if they do well on exams. Should be fired but tenured.
