This guy definitely knows his stuff, but doesn't quite get that the students dont. Goes through 5+ chapters/lecture and just says to read. 3 tests, each of which have questions pulled randomly out of the chapter. if you want to read the WHOLE textbook, you might remember the answers
Smart guy, but not a good teacher, not prepared and doesnt really care.
Knows his stuff but horrible teacher that's all I have to say.
He is lazy lazy lazy. He just wanna show off about the things he know. He dosn't care about students and he loves making you look stuiped. School are short on staff and thats why they are keeping him around.
This guy sucks balls I went to lecture twice the entire semester and I still got a B in the class. Could have gotten an A if I had gone to class because 10% of your grade is attendance(bull crap) Tests are open book(buy old edition because he doesn't care). The only problem is that they cover like 15 chapters so finding the answers takes a while.
Grades just came out. In both classes he is teaching there was only one A. He is stuiped and lier. If you go to his office he tells you that he will reward you by giving you the full 10% on attendence when he gives that to everbdy anyway. Even the people droped or didn't show up to class got 10% on attendence. He sucks big time. Try to take Grote.
Open book test is like fools' gold, giving you a false sense of security. It's almost like you need to memorize the textbook (which is poorly written). This class is all about being able to recall obscure facts out of the 700 or so pages covered in the textbook. He couldn't care less about students' concerns regarding grading.
AVOID THIS GUY AT ALL COSTS. NOT WORTH IT> He will ask you 10 questions that he randomly picks out of like 6 chapters. Just horrible and he really does love making you feel stupid. i.e. He shows a picture of a car frame, students say "It's a car frame." He will answer, "It's the frame of a car!!" He is just an idiot so avoid him at all costs!
This class is so boring. No one learns anything from the lectures since he covers 5-6 chapters a day. I showed up about five times out of the semester and was able to pull off a B.
Just wait till you guys below have to take him for 472! Senior project design takes up a lot of time and Vu refuses to give out A's. First week of class he even said, "if you plan on getting an A please come talk to me first." Excuse me?? He is extremely cocky and arrogant. If you try to answer a question you will be wrong no matter what.
This guy has a bad accent. He can't teach anything and he changes his mind every five seconds. His test are ridiculous and impossible even with the book everything is a trick question. No HW just an AutoCAdd drawing a mid term and a final.
Everyone will get a C no matter how hard you try
His PowerPoint is straight from the book. Grade based on one midterm, one project, one final and attendance. He's not a horrible person but just a horrible professor. I don't think I've learned anything from his class.
This guy has his head so far up his ass I seriously doubt he could pull it out even if he used both hands. His class is ridiculously boring because he just reads to you from the text book. There is 1 project and 2 exams. The exams are open book but extremely hard. This man believes an A student is a C student. Don't expect to get an A!
I have the same feeling as the guy just rated. I got A in most of my math, physics and mechanics and MAE classes.I want to apply these A into Manufacturing when I decided to enroll it.But this lecturer just discouraged me without any help to improve when I did very bad in the midterm. Don't expect to get high score just by reading textbook
This guy is real piece of work. Or a workpiece as I'd like to call him. I scored in the top 6th of the class for test scores and he gave me a C. He has an obvious short-man complex and gets temperamental with his students. Not a very encouraging learning environment. If you ask a question his first response will be to try and ridicule you. Garbage!
this guy is awesome. his philosophy on america is amusing at best, and gives alot of examples from his career experience. he's really helpful if you go after class or to office hours. he makes you think your question through if asked in class. the tests are open book, so read through the material and put post it notes in your book. fun class!!!
everyone gets a C. no matter what. don't ask questions in class because he'll just make you feel stupid and embarrassed. the questions on his midterm are so specific out of the thousand page text book that there is no way you can study. the text book's index will become your best friend.. but no matte what you'll still fail the misterm and final...
This is the worst parasite dwelling in the public school system to date. Typical mis-management of public funds. He knows nothing about the subject and does not even try to hide. He is happy to have the power of abuse and very much aware that he can get away with it.
This "professor" is the rudest person on csulb campus. He is very cocky and think he knows everything. He WILL discourage you to quit being an engineer, and you cant possibly ask this man a question without him coming back at you with a stupid story and answer about how you dont pay attention and other bs.
Avoid at all cost. Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. This would be an interesting class with a competent professor but he makes it horrible. Does not curve. First test average was 50%. Does not return homework or midterms so you never know what you did wrong. Doesn't even seem to know the material very well - or at least can't teach it.
Absolutely terrible, this guy harasses students, doesn't teach, is rude, and is unhelpful. All he does is read the book, tell you to read the book, and gets frustrated if you don't understand and ask for help. The college of engineering well as DSS is investigating him at the moment because of all the complaints. How is he still a teacher?
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! You DO NOT have to take him for MAE272! Find it at a different college, it's worth the commute! El Camino College offers it! Engineering Technology-16! Awesome teacher!
Despite what people say, he's not the worst teacher. He makes fun of you, but just brush it off. He's very funny if you appreciate his humor. Class is hard. Tests are open note, but you MUST read the text otherwise you will fail. Labs can be overwhelming if you can't use AutoCadd/Solidworks. He makes empty threats about grades, so ignore them.
Indeed, he isn't friendly and his tests are tricky. However, I think he is smart and knows what he is talking about. He is simply a harsh person. Skim the book to navigate efficiently during tests. Take careful notes (when he talks a lot about sth, he will test it). During lab, ask the technicians or friends(he will stress you out if you ask him).
Can't describe his awfulness in 350 characters. Had a 4.0 before his class. Tests are all trick questions. Aren't we supposed to learn the information, not "none of above"? I feel like I took two steps back being in his class.. He is insulting, rude, and just mean. AVOID! Do whatever you can to not take his class.
Certainly not an easy class. The professor may be intimidating and raises the bar quite high, but that shouldn't discourage you. Stay positive and do your best. Reading the assigned chapters is essential, though there may be many chapters covered. Pace yourself from the beginning of class and highlight important parts.
Hard as hell to please. He expects you to walk into the class already knowing most of the things that he's supposed to be teaching. Maintains high expectations and will make it a point to make an example out of you if you're wrong. Exams are open book (since his questions are pretty specific). Lab section with Mike is fun and informative though.
This is the worst teacher on campus, he doesn't tell you anything when you ask him a question, expects you to figure it out somehow. Never returns any assignments back so you don't know how your doing in the class until the end of the year when he submits grades. His test are all trick questions...CSULB needs to find another teacher.
Avoid this professor at all class. He is horrible at teaching and finds every opportunity to degrade and discourage students. The lectures consist of pictures from the book that you can "read on your own". Also there are only three grades in the class which makes it very difficult to pass. If you can take the class over summer with Yavari.
Intelligent person but not a good teacher, knows his stuff though study hard or you could fail this class.
Intelligent teacher, but hard to learn from. His accent doesn't help either. Very hard to contact outside of class. Has office hours but no office room number, not even on the syllabus. How am I suppose to find him? He says email is the best way to contact him, but either doesn't respond to emails or responds a week later. Overall, not a good prof.
Honestly I don't know what to say about this professor. The regular lectures were very boring, considering it was him talking about powerpoints from the book, which were easily found online and wasted time. Labs were fun. What killed it for me is the trick-question tests, and the grading. He has no info on grades online. Not reccomended.
This guy will intimidate you on the first day, maybe for the first few meetings. He's gonna act a little too arrogant, but he is not that bad. do not let his demeanor intimidate you. At the end of the day, he is right.
go to class, listen to his lectures, when he takes notes in his notebook write what he said down because its def. going to be on the test. get on his good side. for labs, MIKE is the homie!
Stay away!!!
This professor is very understandable and the class is easy if you go to class everyday and read your book. The chance of passing is 20% if you don't read your book and don't take online quizzes. You will have pop quiz in class so just attend class, the quiz is worth 10 points. If your grade is below 60% by the end of the 2nd exam then get out.!
Vu was honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. People said he's hard but I definitely did way better than my classmates because I went to his office hours the semester before and got to know him. Most people do terribly but they just didn't put in the effort hehaa. If you think you're a rare student who can actually change him you can!
Genuinely terrible teacher, do not take him. There's one rate on here that says that his toughness makes you better. It doesn't. He's a hard grader and is more concerned over if he likes you than if you did well in the class. If you can avoid him, do so.
The reason that there are few ratings for this teacher's class is because everyone agrees that there must be negative ratings on RMP for him and doesn't even try posting here. I'm here to tell you dear god DEAR GOD he is terrible. If there is another professor teaching this class take it but Yavari is leaving so, that's sad. Prepare to get a C.
Hoang is a tough teacher, but I understand where he's coming from. As a student, think of yourself as the knife and Hoang as the sharpener; he knows you're going to not care and become dull so it's his job to try and sharpen you, regardless of whether or not you want your face set to the grindstone. Talk to him after class, he's much nicer.
Honestly he is not as terrible as I expected, but his exams are incredibly frustrating. It is like trying to find a needle in the haystack except the needle does not exist! For lab Mike is great, dont be afraid to ask for his help. Also Vu loves when students engage, he may pick on you but he will respect you more than the shy quiet students.
Tough for a lower division class. Vu wants you to be overwhelmed and stressed out, he believes he is preparing you for the future. He wants you to learn from mistakes and pay attention. He is actually hilarious but his humor can be a bit dark. Talk to him after class and ask him well thought out questions. He is much calmer and kinder one on one.
This class is not that hard. Just be ready to put in a little extra work, and befriend the professor. He's a hard ass but deep inside a nice respectable person. Tips for success: DO THE EXTRA CREDIT it's literally a free 5% of your grade. Also GET AND READ THE BOOK exam q's r VERY specific so flip through the index and chapters to find what u need.
I was heating up my lunch in the ET-16 lab just as Vu walked behind me. He told me my food looked good and I told him that it didn't look half as good as his. Boom. A+. 10/10 would take again.
He is extremely sarcastic, and will call people out for fun (as a joke). I understand how a lot of kids would find it deeply offensive, but really, just take it as a joke. He is much more respectful and helpful after class. He wants you to understand processes, tests are hard because you need to understand the processes and eliminate the choices.
2 midterms 1 final multiple choice open note and book, eliminate choices that require more info than is given like the cost of a process of the size of the piece. Do workpiece and labreport 1 mo. into class. 1st mo. is hard because he wants ppl to drop but gets easier. ask questions to clarify assign. but he wont repeat himself so pay attention
Many of the things he says can be offensive to hear, he wants you to think critically about everything, every decision. Manufacturing is torn between innovation and using what has always been done and his class reflects that. Pay attention to everything he says, write notes you'll need to refer back to them.
Calls students his prisoners and himself the warden Analogy is reflected on his disrespectful attitude he has towards us Won't help you operate the machining tools but instead judge you for "not taking good enough notes" Is vague with his expectations, which are very high btw Wants you to be resourceful, but won't answer questions about work topic
Avoid at all costs if you can, but if you can't, it would be good if you read the textbook. The tests are open book, so knowing where the information is is very helpful. That being said, he puts the most specific information on the tests, so if you can read the book, DO IT. There's just a project and the 3 tests, so make sure you actually study.
Best Professor Cal State Long Beach has to offer hands down
10/10 professor, i love this dude so much. I am a better engineer because of this guy. I would take this class again if i could!
Try not to take him because he does not teach during lecture. He doesn't repeat himself and doesn't give clear criteria. You don't know what your grade is the whole semester because he doesn't post any grades. Not to mention he is very demeaning towards students. He has unrealistically high expectations for his students when this is an intro class.
"this is a two unit class but you will be doing 6 unit class work - and half of you will fail" first thing he said in class
Genuinely feel bad for anyone who takes this guy. First day of class he tells us that he's a warden and we're his prisoners and I laughed because I thought it was just a joke. I'm not laughing now.
Do not listen to the other reviews of this guy. He was actually pretty funny. Sure he might argue with a student here and there but if you can look past the racist jokes you probably will still fail.
He is genuinely hilarious. Only piece of advice is listen closely to what he says (and take notes on anything he says in lecture), and try to think about things from an engineering perspective. You learn a lot from this class.
I don't understand why he's the only MAE 272 teacher at CSULB! His lectures arent as helpful for the test and often time the test don't make sense at all. Every point counts even if you're one point from passing you'll fail. He's very disrespectful and rude to his students that doesn't help with learning the material at all. Worse professors ever!
Vu is just a terrible professor. He really just lectures for hours and does not give extra help. He calls you stupid for not knowing things he is supposed to teach. He gives out CADing projects that have little to no instruction. Overall just sucks. He will leave you out to dry when he is supposed to teach you.
Khang Hoang-Vu is an interesting person. He had very dry humor, making his lectures difficult to sit through. Vu does not grade on time; He's yet to grade an assignment I turned in 7 weeks ago. His exams are like riddles, so even though they're open note, it's hard to do well.
He's the prison warden, we're the inmates. Gave him a 2 because he's so crazy it is sometimes really funny. Took him online during the pandemic, which, after hearing some stories, must have made this class a better experience than in person. Wants you to read the entire book, a couple projects, 3 exams. He will roast you (I speak from experience).
Didn't grade assignments on time and did not provide individual feedback for the assignments. Exams are open book. Gives extra questions on exams to help with grade but still quite difficult. You're on your own for the assignments. He doesn't really answer any questions and is rude when replying to students.
The hardest Professor that I have ever had in my Life. The On-line COVID-19 pandemic class had 4 Tests & were riddles on subject material from the whole book. He insults students in every way possible but was very nice during his office hours & gave me input of how to prepare and succeed in this class. Note-- ONLY half of the class passed...
First off, I've never taken this professor for MAE272, because luckily, I had a classmate tell me this class can be covered by taking MTT100 at Cerritos College (which I did during the summer). Boy, was it lots of fun! I believe I saved myself a lot of unnecessary stress and heartbreak. Second, that is all. Third, good luck!
Your grade is 100% test-based. Most questions do not pertain to what was taught in class if being taught in class was even possible. Very rude when responding to students and constant reminders about how we are going to be mindless Chinese factory workers if we don't read his 1500-page textbook. Good luck!
This dude straight up sucks. Never take him, he is racist, sexist, and just plain mean for no reason. He hates every student that speaks up in class, and especially hates when they are correct when answering a question. He doesn't know anything about manufacturing in the 21st century, and I hate even looking at him after now after 2 years ago.
Rudest professor I've ever had. I recommend not taking his class. Class is all exam based. I was able to pass but studying for his midterms feels pointless because he tests you on sections that have not been covered yet. Stay updated on his exam dates because he does not mention them or send out announcements.
Famous professor!
Most people in the class learned from a previous student who had taken the class already. A doc with all the material was a saving grace.
Vu represents everything wrong with CSULB. A lazy professor who manages to take an interesting course and turn it into something that feels like a chore rather than something you want to learn. Above the nonsense, stale lectures, and confusing directions, Vu is just a straight up liar. It genuinely feels like he is in his own world at times.
racist and sexist, started the semester off with 30 students, only 4 people were left by the end
Avoid
Terrible guy in general do not waist your tuition on him
DONT TAKE HIM, very bad made me hate engineering. 2 unit class but gave hw worth for a 4 unit class. its all reading. he wouldnt round up my 69 to a 70. avoid him but take mahdi during the summer, so much better and i acc learned stuff
I heard about the greatest professor CSULB has to offer and I just had to enroll. He has the greatest lectures and prepares each individual student for success on his super easy exams. His grading is clear and gives phenomenal feedback to each student.I wish I could take Vu for every class, he's the best and keeps his classes extremely entertaining
Khang is a very old school professor in his lectures and grading which based off the few exams he gives. He's a really chill dude and as long you have thick skin, then you'll be fine. His exams allow notes and he lets you write previous test questions/answers down for future. Participate in his lecture and as long as he likes you, he'll pass you.
This dude is outta pocket sometimes but bro is funny sometimes but your whole entire grade is based on like 4 tests. The questions never make sense and throws curveball questions at you.
js take this class at a cc over the summer or something. he's pretty funny tho ngl, js be cooking his students lmao
this dude should not be a professor.
Honestly not as bad as older reviews made him seem. Extremely funny and chill but doesnt do a good job at presenting material. His lectures is just him talking about slides which are only pictures with occassional side rants. His grade is only 4 mutliple choice tests made of questions rarely covered in the lecture. Passing is possible but difficult
The lectures aren't great because he glosses over most of the material. He has some parts that he presents during class, remember what they are. Remember how the block and plug are made. The class is very back heavy so you have some time to get used to the format of the test problems. Most are tricky so focus on the wording. All MC. Lots to read.
As others have said he regularly says racist comments and snide remarks. Don't trust the syllabus. Only exams count toward grade, no lab. He breezes through the sides during lectures and doesn't even post them on canvas making exams even harder. One good thing is that the whole class is worth 100pts, so you need a total of 70 from all the exams.
Take over the summer with a different prof! He is such a rude prof. As a person who isn't very comfortable asking questions in class he makes it 10x harder in doing so. He will never repeat himself, expects you to know a lot, and is intimidating. Honestly he should really retire. Need more profs to teach this course during fall/spring semester.
