He puts outlines on moodle that you print before class, and he fills in the blanks during class. He also DOES NOT use Master Biology, YAY! He answers questions in class and gives a lot of bonus points for showing up. Really nice guy.

Overall a good teacher. Attendance is mandatory because of the in-class assignments and he gives bonus points on random days. Tests are very consistent with the lectures and he is also very helpful outside of class.

If you go to class 9 times out of 10 there is a bonus question. He is likes the kids who go to class and has no problem helping them. Doesn't let you use a computer to take notes but hands out a fill in the blank point and study guides. Will often announce several of the test questions or say "This will be on the test" etc.

He's a helpful professor and his notes and study guides are very helpful for his tests. Some of the test questions can be confusing and the tests aren't the easiest but it's doable. He is asian so he has an accent but he writes everything he says. He gives bonus and clicker points for going to class so you have to go. No homework or quizzes.

VERY DIFFICULT TEACHER FOR THIS COURSE. Taught much more than other teachers of same subject, for instance required students to know how to draw ALL 20 amino acids - even if they had not taken organic chemistry. EXTREMELY nice and helpful, but VERY detailed. Exam questions are immensely difficult. Only take him if your are good at genetics already.

Great teacher for micro. Very interesting. Only issue is that you'll spend most of your time filling in holes in the notes and have no time to listen to him lecture. Hard to make good grades on his exams without listening too. Pair up with a group in case you miss notes. He goes at light speed. Very helpful during office hours and very nice.

Fantastic professor. He is very nice and is always willing to help if you are having trouble understanding the materials. Study his notes/practice worksheets a couple of days in advance before the exams and it should be a relatively easy class.

Really is worried about his students grades, Loves giving out extra credit, his tests are really hard for me but I didn't study for it like i needed to so most likely his tests are most likely easier but those lab tests are not the best either but thats not up to him. Prof. Nguyen was vey, very attentive to his students' needs and offered TONS of extra credit. I had him for genetics and micro and he is awesome. he is one of the few professors I've had that truly cares about his students. i missed class for a dr apt once and he filled out a notes set for me and gave it to me the next class. By far one of the the funnest and most rewarding lab for me. Tests are easy if you attend the labs and study a few days in advance. The lab reports and presentations take up a little bit of time, but they really prepare you for the exams. He is extremely nice and always very positive.

Dr. Khoa is a fresh, young professor who seems to remember the struggle of college students. He is straightforward, expects reasonable effort from his students, and is entertaining to listen too. If you keep up with his material and study daily, you will do well.

If you have to take micro or genetics, he is a very good choice for both classes. You will learn a lot in his class and he makes it very doable as long as you keep up with your studying. I'm taking cell biology and biochemistry right now and the things that I learn in his classes are very helpful for those courses.

Everyone bragged about Nguyen, so I took him for micro. For me, his test were super tricky so I never did well on them. He gives a ton of notes and expects you to know ALL the details even though test are 40 Q's. I had chance to make a B in this class but the lab final messed me up. The lab final ended up being WAY harder than lab midterm. BEWARE!

His office hours are a big help! Biology isn't my strong point so I would go to see him during office hours a lot. He was always willing to help explain the materials and often go beyond the normal office hours until you understand the materials. If you have to take BIOL 2051, he is an excellent choice for the class.

This class is divided into two portions: lab and lecture so you have to keep up with both parts in order to do well. Stay on top of your studying (especially for the lab exams) and it shouldn't be too bad. Dr. Nguyen is pretty straightforward and very willing to help out if you have questions. The material isn't very tough there's just SO MUCH of it. Start studying notes the day you get them. It'll bite you in the butt if you try to cram. I wish I would've studied more. The subject can be a little dry if you are not into micro because you have to know a lot of microbes. As a teacher, Dr. Nguyen is amazing. This is a lecture/lab combo course so it's like taking two separate classes which can be time consuming. His lectures are very informative and he is incredibly helpful during office hours. There are bonus and participating points for almost every class so make sure you attend lectures. He is also very nice and does his best to help you succeed.

Dr. Nguyen is very to the point and doesn't drag out the lectures. Tests are MC and come from his lecture notes. It's not hard but you have to know the materials pretty well as some of the questions are very detailed. He gives a lot of bonus points which definitely helps. Overall, I like the lectures a lot but the lab is absolutely terrible.

Offers extra credit or in class assignments every class period. Test questions can be tricky because he offers all of the above, A and B, etc type answer choices.

Wow. I've never had a professor quite like Dr. Nguyen. The amount of time he is willing to invest into helping his students is unmatched, and he is always available outside of class. In class, his lectures are engaging, and his note format makes it easy to follow along. If Dr. Nguyen's class is full, just wait a semester to take it.

Dr. Nguyen is the best professor I have had at LSU. He learns your name on the first day and continuously checks in on how you are doing in not only his class, but other classes and even future classes. He is the most caring, knowledgeable professor I have had. He genuinely loves what he does, what he teaches, and wants his students to pass.

One of the kindest, caring and most helpful teachers.. This class does take up a lot of time (especially the lab) with tough exams but the subject is very interesting. Office hours:questions&test review, but in O.H. he just repeats what he said in class, so it's not that helpful. He makes an effort to learn your name & is on the Pre-Med review committee. This class has a lab too that requires lots of outside work on top of lecture tests, which are so hard. You need to know everything bc of how the ?s are designed

I'm the type of person that can memorize and get an A on a test, but for this course it's not the way to pass and Dr. Nguyen clearly made that known. I struggled so much, but applied different study methods and went to OH and made A's on the rest of the exams. Hands down the best professor I've ever had. Not an easy A, but is doable

Dr. Nguyen is the best teacher I have had at LSU. He is caring of everyone and puts in the extra effort to see his students suceed. He goes above and beyond and I personally loved his teaching methods. His tests are multiple choice, but you have to study for it like a shorts answer test.

I have mixed feelings about the class as a whole. The lecture side is very interesting and Dr. Nguyen is an excellent teacher who is caring, helpful and very encouraging. On the other hand, the lab side is very difficult, confusing and extremely time consuming.

Textbook is not needed for the most part as the exams focus on his lecture notes. The questions can be tricky and detailed so you have to know the materials very well (e.g. what each microbe does). Just make sure you study a couple of days in advance. He is a very good teacher and keeps things interesting. I enjoy the class.

Probably the nicest professor at LSU alongside Dr. Harhad in the mathematics department and always has a cheerful attitude even when punishing students for using electronics (which I found hilarious). He seems infinitely knowledgeable with course work and can answer any lecture-related question. Lab sections are tough, but Dr. Nguyen is worth it.

Absolute king. Seemingly knows everything about micro, can and will answer any questions, and gives a tremendous amount of bonus for attendance. Don't worry about the lab too much as he'll give the class a boost at the end of the semester if the lab final challenges everyone. For pre-meds, this is a must-take class. Nguyen is hilarious and gives you all the tools you need to succeed, just put in the work. The in-class bonus is a huge deal. Don't underestimate the final exam... it's a killer, but there's a huge curve with the bonus. Introduce yourself to him. You definitely want him to remember who you are if pre-med.

Professor Nguyen is a very kind, encouraging and knowledgeable teacher. HOWEVER, he gives a lot of notes and at time, it can be overwhelming especially if you have two jobs and 19 hours of coursework like me. Still, I found the materials to be very interesting and he is super helpful if you have questions.

Micro is a fun, challenging class and Dr. Nguyen is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is invested in the success of his students. Lecture attendance is super important because the bonuses will save your grade. The tests are pretty challenging. If you aren't sure how to prepare, go to his office hours and he will help you.

Dr. Nguyen is a great professor but his class is no joke. His microbiology class is a lot harder than his genetics class, and the final is killer. Be prepared to work for your grade and to know the notes front and back, else the test is going to be really hard.

Test were hard, but it was doable. LOL to the lab portion. You are expected to write a lab report 1-2 times a week, which consisted of 500-1000 words. The TA also grades really hard.. :(. Dont let me get started with the lab midterm and final. Shidddd. Luckily, we didnt have to take the lab final because of covid 19.

It's almost a right-of-passage to take Nguyen as a pre-med. This class is not easy bc of the test format (1 of the above, 2 of the above, etc.), but he does give you all the info you need to do well. Answer questions in class or go to OH. This is a great professor to have know your name.

The way the online class was formatted is he posted notes every week and there was a voiceover to go with it, so its very self taught. All tests were open note and there were take home assignments. Overall, class was fairly easy. The Microbiology lab class you take with it has a midterm and a final that is unnecessarily hard however.

This class is needed for micro majors but it also counts as a upper level elective for biol majors. The projects are pretty neat and interesting and he always available for help if you are struggling. There are only two exams which cover a lot of stuffs but he gives you a study guide for each one.

Amazing professor but not an easy A. Tests for this semester were open notes but he will not be continuing that in his fall semester apparently. I do not make As in most classes but I have done pretty well in this one so far, exams are written so make sure you can explain mechanisms in words and he is strict but fair on what he will and wont do

Though he said won't be teaching this class again, he will be teaching others so def take him if you can. One of my favorite upper level lab. Dr. Nguyen teaches the lab itself (not the TA) which is great because he is clear on the information and explains things very well. The experiments are fun to do and the exams are fair. The only downside is that this lab fills up fast and I couldn't take it until my very last semester.

Khoa is quite literally the best instructor I've had in my 3 years at LSU, and that's by a wide margin too. He is genuinely caring, funny, incredibly supportive, a great explainer and is always in a great mood. The genetics course, while tough, was very interesting. Dr. Khoa is a super special person and anyone who takes him will agree with me!

Exceeds the hype. Best professor I've taken at LSU by tenfold. He knows just about every one of his students names, something I have not seen before. He prepares you well for his exams and you learn lots. Will definitely be taking his other classes if I can. If you miss out on this professor during your time at LSU, I feel bad for you.

I had Dr. Nguyen for both BIOL 2051 and 2153 which helps a lot because the materials overlap and he does a great job of connecting the two classes together. His final exams are kind of tough because they cover multiple chapters but his lecture notes are very thorough and he prepares you well for the exams. Definitely of the best biology teachers.

Khoa Nguyen is possibly the best STEM professor I have had at LSU. He is always helpful and nice to his students. His final when I took it was open-notes, BUT you still had to study. He gives study guides so you can know exactly what are on his tests. His class consists of labs and projects. If you put in the effort, this class is very doable.

3 projects and 3 exams. He prepares you well for the exams and is clear on what you need for the projects. Very knowledgeable in the subject and always makes sure that you understand the materials before leaving each class. One of the most caring and enthusiastic teacher I taken at LSU.

The best professor I've had at LSU! Experiments are all really cool and a lot more in-depth than the BIOL 2051 lab experiments. Dr. Nguyen is extremely caring and knows every person's name. Jokes around a lot with everyone in class. Tests are sort of hard, but study a decent amount and you'll get an A+. The tests are direct from the study guide.

Had him for micro, genetics and the advanced micro lab. His classes were a tremendous help for the MCAT preparation. He teaches very well, always in a upbeat mood and cares a lot the class learning.

BEST PROF @LSU. This is the 3rd class I've taken with him and he somehow just gets better every year. Dr. Nguyen is so passionate about what he does and he just wants to share that passion with you. Knows every student by name and creates the best learning atmosphere with lots of jokes and genuinely caring about your future. You can't go wrong.

The best professor and the best lab class I'd taken at LSU. Dr. Nguyen is a very inspiring, kind and encouraging teacher. Super helpful and always welcoming questions from the class. Exams are not difficult as long as you attend class and study his notes/study guides.

This class is a hidden gem. I didn't know about it until my last semester, but it is way more interesting than the other biol labs. On top of that, Dr.Nguyen is the one of most caring, helpful and knowledgeable professor.

One of the best professors at LSU! I took biol 2153 over the summer with him and it was one of my favorite classes. He is a very caring professor and he wants his students to succeed. He gives note packets that you complete in class and a textbook was not mandatory. Also gives multiple bonus assignments for each exam. I highly recommend.

Dr. Nguyen deserves the highest of praise. He will take up so much of his time to ensure that his students are understanding the material and truly wants all of his students to do well. He provided many bonus point assignments leading up to each exam and never made any exams that were overly difficult or off topic from the lectures. 12/10 professor

I took this class over the summer and he did both the lecture and lab which helps tremendously. His lectures are fun and interesting and he makes it easy to understand the materials. Super nice guy and the class is a great learning experience. Just make sure you keep up with the notes each day and the exams are not too hard.

Dr. Nguyen is an excellent professor who makes bio interesting. The in-class notes and daily assignments keep you engaged. unstuckstudy AI is a great study tool to complement the class.

Really fun and interesting lab. You get to learn a lot of useful microbiology lab techniques. Dr. Nguyen is very nice and genuinely cares a lot about our learning and success. The exams are not too tough if you study his notes a few days in advance. He also gives a study guide for each exam to prepare you.

Best professor at LSU! Exams come straight from his notes and ppts (doesn't try to trick you). He's super approachable, answers all questions, and genuinely wants you to succeed. Labs are fun/interesting, with a written assignment due before you leave. Follow his advice, study ahead (lots of material), and you'll love him. 100% taking him again!

Dr. Nguyen is hands down one of the best biology professors that I have had at my time here at LSU. He makes the class interesting and the structure is well thought out. Very concise and clear of what is expected in class and always available for help if you don't understand something. I wish I could have taken him for another class.

I never had teacher like Dr. Nguyen. He is very passionate about the subject, make the class exciting and always encourage us to do well. I've never actually taken in so many concepts of microbiology until taking this class. Hope to take him again for BIOL 4400 in a later semester.

Possibly the greatest professor I've ever had at LSU. He's approachable, informative, and always willing to help students. The expectations for this class were very clearly outlined, and I never left a lab feeling like I didn't understand what was going on. Exams can be tough, but he is a generous grader and gives partial credit. Take Dr. Nguyen!

Dr. Nguyen is a great professor. His lectures are short, clear, and never boring. It's an in-person lab and lecture combo, so having a good partner is helpful. There are in-class assignments, lab projects, a midterm, final, and a group presentation. The class is fair, enjoyable, and worth retaking if given the chance.

Took him during the summer and he made it feel easy despite it being 1 month. If all professors were as diligent/passionate as this I would never feel lost. He learns everyone name after a few days and is always enthusiastic to see us. If you can, take this class over summer as it is much better than the fall/spring semesters.

Dr. Nguyen was wonderful. I was nervous about taking micro during the summer. It was very worth it. Dr. Nguyen encouraged all students and made himself accessible in and out of class. He did not try to trick us on exams; very straightforward questions. He is worth getting up for a 7:30a class 5 days for 5 weeks. Gives numerous bonus opportunities!

This was the best class I've ever taken at LSU. I took it during summer and he taught very effectively. He gave fill in the blank notes. He is very caring. Tests were very similar to in class assignments. He is strict on attendance and no technology during class.

Best professor I've had so far at LSU! He is big on attendance, but if you go to class, you will succeed! Everything from the lectures and worksheets will be on the exam, no tricks! He is so caring and gives lots of opportunities for his students to do well. The extra credit is sweet and not too challenging! Take him for every bio class you can!

AMAZING!! Taken over the summer and his tests were open note as long as you came to class and got the paper notes every day. Wants you to be successful and learns everyones names personally. I couldn't recommend anyone anymore he's the best professor I've ever had at LSU.

This is the 2nd time I've had him. We haven't even had our first exam yet, and I'm posting this because his classes are so awesome. He gives you the notes you need to know for the exam; he makes labs fun; and he's so nice. He has everyone's best interest at heart, and if you study what he tells you to, you'll have fun and do great in this class.

Despite being a 7:30 class, Dr. Nguyen made the materials very interesting. I didn't think I would enjoy a class about evolution, but I ended up learning a lot. He is super nice and actually took the time to learn all our names. Make sure you come to class as there is a graded assignment every lecture.

Dr. Nguyen is a great teacher who wants the best for his students. He is clear on the course layout, will help if you don't understand something and is very knowledgeable on the materials. This lab is much more interesting and organized than the general micro lab. Definitely one of the better upper level biology electives.

Well-structured course and Dr. Nguyen was interested in student success in and out of class, almost to an irritating level. Techniques were relatively easy to learn/do. Assignments and presentations were fairly easy and needed understanding to realistic undergraduate levels. Tests were easy and he clearly outlines his expectations for students.

Dr. Nguyen is by far one of the best teachers at LSU. His lectures are very easy to follow, and he will hand out note packets that have all the information you will need for exams, recitation assignments, etc. The lab is informative and overall just fun!
