This guy is the best teacher in chem that i've had yet. The class isn't easy because it's organic chemistry, but this guy makes it much easier and he is really, really good at explaining everything. Also, he has fair tests and wants everyone to do well.
By far the best chem professor I have ever had, he makes the stuff really easy to learn. Exams aren't too bad, either.
Best chemistry teacher I've had here. He is awesome at explaining things, and his tests are very reassuring, and fair.

Professor Daruwala is the best teacher that I have had here. He tests are very fair and he always makes sure that information has been fully covered before testing over it. If you have the chance you should take any class with him.
awesome!!!
Best chem teacher I've had so far. His exams are pretty easy, nothing he hasn't gone over a bunch in lecture.
He's the best teacher ever, really on your side!! If you get the chance take him!
AWESOME TEACHER! His teaching methods are great, he has printouts of the notes that you can fill out along with him in class. He engages with the class a lot to keep your attention and is very good at explaining things.
He is an inspiration, and anyone that does not get to have him as a teacher is missing out. He makes chemistry fun and understandable. He drills the important information into your head. He also has interactive lecture notes that are very helpful.
The best chemistry professor I have ever had. He should teach all chem course.
Simply, he is the best professor i've had.
Great
The best chem professor I've had, I wish I could have taken all my classes with him, I'm sure I would have done much better. His handouts are very helpful and he gives really good examples in class.
GREAT PROF!!

This dude is AWSOME!! Only teacher i know who got a standing ovation when he walked into a class he wasn't even teaching.
I love this professor. He is so awesome. He just wanted everyone to learn, and love chem the way he did.

Best professor I've ever had at UW
He's the only good chemsitry teacher I've had a UW, and he was great. He cares whether you learn or not and his tests are totally fair.
Great teacher and used very helpful chapter packets. Almost made Org. chem fun.
Awesome teacher, has a lot of energy. He teaches a lot so he expects a lot out of his students. Best chem teacher in my opinion.
He's not that hard. If you do the excercise problems he made, and all the selected problems (basically the whole chapter review) you'll be fine. He doensn't make the question tricky or anything(straightforward) He expects only the amount of stuff that he actually taught in class. If you do the reading and the selected problems, it's an easy class.
his old fashioned teaching style (he preferred that the class answer in unison when he asks a question) was actually pretty effective at drilling that stuff into my head. he made his own extensive lecture notes (not powerpoint) which he followed verbatim.
He was the best chemistry professor I ever had. His notes were very detailed and clear, and he basically tells you what you have to study for the test.
He is a nice guy and pretty funny for a professor. He makes lecture notes that he follows verbatum, but the lecture notes are often unclear and he offers very few submissions on homework, and the assignments arent easy. However tests aren't bad, overall an OK prof, but not a great one.
BEST CHEM PROF YOU'LL EVER HAVE! SO HELPFUL! GIVES HANDOUTS AS NOTES, VERY HELPFUL, TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
very interesting teacher and test out of notes, so no need for textbook at all
This is quite possibly the BEST professor at UW. He is known to be one of the harder professors in chemistry, but that is because he can be because he teaches that well. His tests aren't that complicated but be prepared for his quizzes; they are quite a doozy.....but other than that, I highly recommend for anyone to take him!
Professor Daruwala is considered to be one of the best lecturers that UW has to offer. He really wants you to grasp the concepts and learn. His lecture notes are better than the book. He expects a lot from the students. The tests are pretty difficult, but I would take him again.
I found him to be annoying. He is always asking "yes or no" and "and what?" when he is writing. He gives you very little time on the quizzes. I regret taking his classes. Its hard to learn when he is so annoying
Very difficult professor. Hard to understand and lecture is confusing. He yells at you when you don't participate, but half the time everyone is lost on the material. Then he yells at you when no one does well on the exams (isn't that his fault?). However, as far as chemistry goes, he's supposeably the best lecturer for UW. YIKES!
He is very difficult. His quizes are hard.. and Midterms are okay.... He expects you to know more.. He is known as the best chem prof at UW but it now he teahces freshman clases so maybe he screwd up... prbly because his clases are too damn hard !!! I wouldnt take him again. His notes are helpful though..
Dr. Daruwala is a very good professor. He explains things in a manner that makes it easier to understand the material he's teaching. Also, he's pretty funny for a professor, and his lectures are definitely not boring. Take him if you get the chance; I sure did.
Good and Funny
He must think we're all idiots; the questions he asks us are so worthless. most questions have definite answers taht are sometimes written on the overhead with his finger next to it. How bout asking something that requires thought? Test averages are 60 and 50 for the midterms, but just read the book (dont even listen in lecture) and you'll ace it.
A more enthusiastic chem professor never lived. Great lecturer (both theory + humor), and he even has lecture notes, which ensure that if you pay attention, you won't miss a thing. Also, he's a very nice person outside of the classroom. I went to his office hours and he ended up teaching me all the tricks for going pre-med. Take his class!
Daruwala is REALLY enthusiastic. He cares that the class learns the material, and is very interactive. You can get by with not reading the book because Daruwala takes all of the important concepts from the book and puts them on printouts that you take notes on. I learned a lot from this class considering HS chem taught me nothing.
I really enjoyed his lectures. Not many professors offer a lot of help during office hours, but Dr. Daruwala spent 3 hours explaining a concept to me and testing me to make sure I really understood it. I would definitely take his class again if I could.
Really good prof. He really wants the class to do well and instead of reading the book, his handouts contain all the important things that you need to know for the exams. I learned a lot from him because he always "want the class to contribute"(he says that a lot)and he won't test you on things that he didn't cover in class. his test aren't very ea
He's a good lecturer, always wanting to interact with the class but his exams and quizzes are way too hard considering the amount of time we have in class to absorb the material.
GREAT professor. his notes are better than the book. hw problems are a bit difficult but really helpful. if you pay attention in lecture, he'll teach you everything you need to know. i worked really hard and went to his lectures everyday and got a 4.0
Very enthusiastic about teaching. Cares about his students and their understanding of the concepts.
AWESOME ACCENT! I LOVE IT! Knows his stuff really well and lectures well too! Notes are straight forward and easy to follow. Tests are REALLY hard, but going to office hours helps immensley!
One of the best professors i've had so far, he makes sure that concepts are understood and doesn't rush through things without explaining everything. He made 8:30 am chem lecture at least a little less painful.
A wonderful professor. He has very clear handouts that help alot. His test are somewhat hard but if you read his handouts and practice equations you should do well. He is very enthusiastic and has a genuine interest in students and wants them to learn.
He's hard to understand. He speaks english, but it's like tech support english. He teaches fast, so that combined with his accent makes it pretty hard to follow along. A typical lecture is just frantically copying notes on our handout sheets. I never learn during lectures, but the notes that I copy are very helpful.
What an amazing professor, he is SUCH a good teacher. Super helpful during office hours, tests were hard, but if you study a little you will do well. He makes chemistry not just bearable, but fun. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. HE'S THE BEST!!!! I despised chem before this class, but he totally turned that around.
His English... like 2/24 said, not great. That said, he was very awake and energetic, which he directed into short rants about student participation (in a, uh, 300 person lecture?). Roundabout explanations and picky about table-drawing. Good quizzes! Bad Handouts! Complicates simple concepts. The textbook and quizzes got me an A, not him.
Best Professor ever. Great lecturer, goes above and beyond text book explanations. Tests and quizzes reflect review problems and examples. Lecturers not boring because handouts help you stay involved and awake if you want to learn.
fun lectures but hard to understand his accent sometimes. His midterms are pretty hard. I don't like the way his midterms and finals are ALL MULTIPLE.
He's a great prof! His accent is slightly British which is quite amusing, along with his word choice. In any case, homework was way less than in 142 (14 problems per 1 1/2 weeks) quizzes were 'fair', midterms and final are a bit challenging, but he teaches you everything in these 5 chapters. Focus conceptual more than numerical, but o well
He was an amazing Chem professor! I wish I can take another class from him! His explanations were great, and if you just study his notes/course pack, then you'll be fine with the midterms and final. I ended up with a 4.0 and I didn't even bother reading the textbook!
Khush is the man. Bar none a great Chem Professor. Makes lecture fun, and a pretty funny guy when he gets going. Definitely suggest
I almost never fell asleep in lecture because he did a good job of structuring the note taking in such a way that students are kept busy for the whole lectures. However, sometimes this note taking is at too rapid of pace. Also, I believe that the best students know he's good and take his class which makes for a harder curve.
Daruwala's lecture's are set up in a way that does not require you to read the book (but its good to read for review). I agree that since he is known to be a great professor, students who are good at chemistry take his class, so it might be harder to get a good grade. I took CHEM 142 from Campbell, thought they were the same difficulty.
I took this class hearing all nice things about Daruwala before even attending lecture. I found out that his class is rather difficult to get high up on the curve but Daruwala is actually a really good teacher. I usually don't like chemistry ever but I enjoyed his class somewhat.
Good professor, his class handouts are all you need for review. Demands class participation, but it helps drill material in. Exams were multiple choice, leading to a love hate relationship. Course material starts off dry but gets better. Quizzes were of moderate difficulty. Very enthusiastic, lectures are very intense. It is a gift to get thi
He types out notes that you have to fill in during class with him. That keeps you awake and keeps you consistent in attending lectures. This way you don't have to read the dry book! Hes very enthusaistic and funny, he keeps it interesting. He has high expectations, he puts in a lot of work and expects you to do the same, which is a good thing
I love this guy. He is very engaging in his lectures. His class notes are really helpful and they keep you awake in class by having to fill in the blanks. People complain about his exams, but I think if you go over the textbook for a little bit, you can get a top score! He made calculation-based chemistry easier to understand. He is funny too!
By far the best teacher I have had so far! he cares about his students and makes chem less painful. No teacher compares
He is awesome at going through all the topics very clearly. The review questions from the textbook he recommends are helpful. He's really nice, but his tests are trickier than you'd anticipate.
I love this man. He is a great lecturer and actually wants to help students learn. Makes chemistry accessible and fun.
When I took him, Daruwala was very efficient in class. He always wanted to make the most of lectures. Perhaps the best part about him is that he cares that the students understand the material. Also, he takes time to sift through all the problems in the book and recommends extras to practice for the exams (quite helpful).
Daruwala is very enthusiastic and provides an interesting lecture. However, the notes he provides are far too easy as compared to his exams. The questions are far too hard and the calculations on the exam are much difficult as compared to the calculations in the course handouts he provides.
Good lecturer and his handouts are fairly helpful. Just don't expect his tests to be as easy as the problems he provides in his handouts. Tests are extremely hard and his expectations are way too high. When I took this class, he set the average at 2.4 when he had the option of setting it at a 2.8. -__- Take it if you want a dent in your GPA! Good l
Daruwala is fantastic - no nonsense, very clear lectures and lecture notes, extremely willing to help students at office hours. The best teacher I had in the 142-162 series. Not sure why some here think his exams are hard. I thought they were just fine, if you did your homework and paid attention in lecture. Definitely take 142 from him if you can.
Daruwala is a great professor to have for chem 142. His notes are super clear and awesome! You should understand his notes, not the textbook. His exams are hard but if you study hard, you will do good.
Lecture was pure pain - nonsense prompts to vague questions seeking specific answers that did nothing to advance the lecture. Then beratings when the class didn't answer. It's like someone told him to make class interactive and he is giving it the ol' college try and it's awful. This is not the best prof the UW has to offer! Come on!
Great lecturer, good energy, fun class
Of the ten different chem professors I've had at the UW, Daruwala is by far the best. An incredible amount of information to learn, tests are tricky, and lectures go quickly, but he's enthusiastic and explains things well. Offers lots of help outside of class and really cares about his students. Put in the time and effort and you'll do well.
I seriously have no idea why everyone is saying he is so great , I honestly regret taking his class....worst professor ever! If you plan on going to Dental or Med school...don't take this class...he tells you on the first day that everyone usually gets between a 2.4-2.6!
Yes, the material itself is challenging and there is a massive amount that you need to know. However, he is extremely enthusiastic about his lectures and material puts a RIDICULOUS amount of effort into making sure that you learn. I mean, this guy has tests graded and handed back the next lecture!? Anyway, in short..hard class but awesome teacher.
I have no idea why I continued with him in the second class of ochem. I got good grades I'm both 237 and 238 but I still say he's a nightmare. My grades were high only because I studied day and night for this, but did he make me like ochem? He actually made me hate it after loving it at the beginning before I took ochem when I taught it to myself.
The best prof I ever had. So passionate that his students learn. His class is challenging, but if you put in the effort and use him as a resource in office hours you wil be glad for the challenge. He groomed me well for succeeding on the MCAT. Also very willing to write letters of rec for students he knows.
Does not care if you understand because he MUST get through all 9 chapters in the quarter- even if it means covering a 25 page booklet in one lecture. Asks the class if they have questions but gets angry if you spend too much time on one subject. Takes off an entire exam point if you forget one negative charge. Scolds the class like we are children
Picks favorites, was very rude to classmates he was not fond of. Will call you out and embarrass you in front of the class. Literally yells at the class if someone doesn't volunteer or shout the answer. BE WARNED: You only get 55 minutes for a 6-page O-Chem TOUGH exam so get ready to speed race. Majority of the class never finishes. Average is 65%.
He is amazing! Made OChem fun and his pa jets he has created, which you fill in during class, are superb! Didn't read the book and did well. All Ochem exams at UW are one hour. People complaining must not have received that memo. He will not hold your hand and you need to work. This class isn't for babies. He makes Ochem fun and you want to learn!
Amazing teacher for ochem, he has a fast pace but this is college so get used to it. Has exam reviews prior to the tests. Homework is kinda a lot but Ochem is all about practice. Tests are very fair and is dropping lowest midterm score. Would highly recommend if you want to learn Ochem (good for taking MCAT).
OChem is a brutally hard course - get over it. If you're ready to show up to class and work your ass off Dr. Daruwala is awesome. Lectures are fast paced, but he explains things incredibly well and can be really funny. Prof tends to be short-tempered but gets over it quickly. Tests are tough and make up most of the grade. I recommend him.
Dr. Daruwala is seriously the best. His lectures are amazing and his chapter packets and worksheets are incredible. He is seriously funny, and if you work hard, he goes above and beyond to help you. He is the one of the best instructors I have ever had. Only wish I had taken him for Gen chem, would have learned and remembered a lot more!!
By far the best professor I have ever had. I was so scared of o chem and I loved it by the end of the quarter. The material and exams are hard, but in a way that is totally fair and rewards hard work. You can really tell how much he wants you to learn, he puts a lot of effort in to make sure of it
Khushroo uses old school teaching methods which require tried and true methods of learning. His exams, homework, and lecture are HARD but as he will tell you, fair.
Would recommend to anyone serious about learning organic chemistry. He's challenging but fair, and one of the best professors I've ever had. If you don't do well with competition or being pushed you won't like him, but if you can handle the heat you will leave the class with a superior understanding of chemistry.
Professor Daruwala is very old school. He only uses paper notes and projects them on the overhead. Not necessarily a bad thing for most, but lectures aren't recorded, notes aren't posted, and he gets easily distracted (talking, laptops, phones, etc). Overall, good, old-school professor, but only take if you are willing to change your study habits.
Dr. Daruwala is a great professor! He's nice and approachable and he's extremely honest about how he grades and what he expects from you. His tests are really clear and are similarly outlined to his packets that he provides, so if you have trouble studying from the textbook, review the packets a bunch. Overall, he's hard but I really enjoyed him.
He's unprofessional and would always make comments about me, and just weird things he would stare and notice about me. Never replied to a single email of mine, and it always was polite and professor (my emails). Once in lab I was reading a volume, and I was on my knees and he asked me if I was praying. Completely unprofessional and inappropriate.
He DEMANDS participation from the class and picks on people in lecture who stand out at all, his homeworks are time consuming and difficult, his tests are incredibly diffcult, he is horrible at answering questions clearly, and he lectures without powerpoints or writing on the board and refuses to post comprehensive notes online. AVOID IF YOU CAN!!
Professor Daruwala enjoys it when students participates. When students are not comfortable to participate or when they answer something wrong, he'll get frustrated easily. He NEEDS reassurance of students knowledge or he'll go mad, literally. Lectures are speedy so you must have some knowledge of material prior to attending lectures.
Dr. Daruwala is an amazing teacher! If you really are interested in understanding the concepts of organic chemistry, take him! I am pre med, so I was interesting in taking him specifically to learn on a conceptual level for the MCAT rather than just memorizing material to pass the class. He has packets each chapter, if you know them you'll be fine.
I think he could be a better professor if he didn't make snarky comments or demean his students. He goes over the material, but does not explain things that well. His grading is harsh and won't let you ask for points back. I don't recommend taking him if you have an option.
Horrible experience. Exams I believe did not focus on important aspects of organic chemistry, but rather other skills.
UGGGG, ive had some good experiences with him. He tries to help sometimes and I almost liked him UNTIL I realized he grades EXTREMELY harshly. If you get the answer right but put it in your own words instead of his, DOCKED way too many points. He also is short tempered. He pisses me off honestly, I heard he is good for Ochem but thats about it.
Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. He's very rude to students and will shame students for questions he thinks are dumb in front of the whole class. Inconsistent with grading and is vague when asked to clarify criteria.
I try to be patient and understanding to all my professors because I understand all of us hate this remote learning concept. HOWEVER, this professor was seriously a headache. He is rude, not clear with his instructions, picks on students, and embarrasses them in front of others. Ultimately, do you're best to stay away from this teacher.
these recent bad reviews made me worried at first but it turns out he's a rlly good! has useful handouts he gives for each chapter. everyone in 238 wishes that daruwala taught it. i have him for lab now (spring) after taking his 237 class in winter. my friend also took murali and said he preferred daruwala (bc murali just does powerpoint lectures)
He is really caring, but it won't be very obvious. I'm impressed by how concealed his lecture is. OChem is bad because it's too long and we have to cover too much in fast pace. This is where quality outwin quantity, not his fault. He's very humble and knowledgeable. You just need to work hard, be respectful. Ask him good questions and practice well
I have learned a lot, however, this professor sets you up to receive a bad grade. He picks on students and I have heard him tell students to shut up multiple times for asking questions. He will say to study for a topic for the exam and then totally different topics are on the exam. The average was so poor on the exam that most people failed.
Just no.
Whatever, you do, never take a class with this professor. He would just skim over the worksheets that we do before class, and that would be his way of teaching. He wouldn't go into detail about his solutions and concepts. He would assign these worksheets before we get taught the material and he would call it 'review'.
Daruwala runs a fast-paced class, but engaging with the material and using resources like the free textbook and Unstuck study can help. He's knowledgeable, though gets frustrated if students don't participate. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Professor Daruwala made Orgo1 simple to understand! Coming into the class I thought I was baked, but his amazing lectures and notes allow you to follow along and is very helpful for review. Fast paced but manageable w/ studying. Content is enjoyable and very accessible/helpful during office hours. Exams are very fair (5-10pts extra credit) per.
