Kia is sarcastic and fun, but sometimes he rushes through the material and it's hard to follow. Do the worksheets even though they aren't graded, and come to class even though attendance isn't mandatory...these will help you succeed. If you're struggling in the class, tell him! He's always willing to meet up and help you out!
Oh my god, this guy irritated me. He was sarcastic, he would make you feel stupid whenever you ask a question and lastly he doesn't use the book! He insteads shows you how to do a problem and then gives you one to try out which way too different from the one he just showed us! Even the LAP thought the problems were harder than they needed to be.
He is a very sarcastic guy. He will choose a student who deserves it and kind of poke fun at him/her for that day but it is all in good fun. If you cannot take a joke, pick another teacher. He assigns a lot of homework but does not collect it. however it is in your best interest to do it anyway. GREAT TEACHER WHO LOVES WHAT HE DOES! THUMBS UP
wow..to much to say about this guy, except his jokes get in the way of his teaching..half the class we are learning, and half the class kia is making jokes (often bad jokes)..i guess it makes up for all the time he spends rushing through the material. this isn't a stand up, its a class...and people pay to learn, not get made fun of.
HOLY HOMEWORK BATMAN! If you have anything outside of this class (life, spouse, kids, bills, other classes, etc) you will struggle to keep up w/ the HW. He is HILARIOUS, but you need 30+ hours per week for his class. This class made my wife and kids hate my school. GREAT GUY: I'd buy him a beer anytime, but never want to take another class w/ him.
Very FUNNY but he moves fast and gets ahead of schedule easily. Instead of reviewing for the tests, he assigns more chapters to be included on the test. 3 extra chpts this semester. Don't take him if you can't do 6 hrs a day for lect + HW. WARNING: Tests are harder than anything in the HW, so you need to sacrifice everything for this class.
Horrible professor, if you ask any question be prepared for it to be made into a joke, because the class will be laughing at you. Needs to teach more, and make fun less.
Kia is amazing! He definitely makes what can be a very boring class interesting with his sense of humor. If you can't take a joke, you should probably take another professor (it will be your loss). He is more than willing to help and wants his students to succeed, but you need to take the initiative to ask. Do the homework if you want to succeed.
I thought that Kia was a great professor who was really enthusiastic about his job. He is kind of abrasive, but he genuinly cares about his students. He is really funny and easy to talk to, but you need to work hard to get a good grade because it's college. I thoroughly enjoyed his class! Thank you for making stats fun, Kia - "No Talk"
great teacher! finally helped me understand math!
Kia is not the professor for everybody, but I'm a huge fan. Underneath the sarcastic, smart aleck and sometimes even juvenile exterior is a man who deeply cares about his students and will go out of his way to help you understand. Give him respect and he will give it back; put in the effort and he will, too. I highly recommend him. Thanks, Kia!
Kia is a really good professor with a good heart. He has a knack for giving everyone a nickname and odds are you will have one before the semester is over. You have to be able to put up with a professor that will poke and make fun of you. Kia really is big on attendance and being on time. I highly recommend Kia, he is hilarious as well.
I didn't like him. Yeah, was funny. Brighten up lectures. But as far as my class went, he seemed quite burned out and a little short of time. I went to his office hours several times and every time he was just in a hurry to get me out. Stopped assigning homework after second week. Was a problem for me cause I like structure.
He is a funny guy, but teaching wise he is not very helpful. This class is extremely hard and I math is my strong point. Tests are hard and unclear. Do not recommend this class
Actually... He is the BEST :)
Good teacher. Gives good grades at the end
Straightforward teaching. No homework assigned so it requires discipline to work outside of class. Work hard and ask questions and you should get a good grade. I got an A and I just had to really put my effort into studying. He can be sarcastic but I found it humorous.
REALLY funny, but if you cant take a joke, get out of the class. I took his class because of the all the funny stuff i read on this site, but the actual class was REALLY DIFFICULT. he gives no assignments, which means you have to get A or B on tests, and he words the questions the MOST COMPLICATED way, it felt like physics all over again. BAD CLASS
I think he's doing his own ratings on here. Seriously, 20-something ratings in one day? C'mon. Anyway, this class was really hard, I had to drop because I couldn't hang. He's funny (albeit, a little insulting) so if you can't take a joke, stay away.
Kia is a good teacher, very sarcastic, but he makes the class tolerable. He doesn't assign homework, however DO IT. It will help a lot. He explains things in class, however to get more help use his office hours, they are to your advantage. Honestly, I was blaming him for my grade, when I realized I wasn't practicing the math making my grade suffer.
Kia's Stats class is HARD, do not take if you want to pass with anything higher than a C!! He does not assign hw and gives worksheets in class that do not help you prepare for what is on the test at all! The tests questions are much harder than anything he goes over in class. Do not recommend!
He is the worst! I'm usually great with math, but this class killed me. He explains things differently to every one of his classes. Kia is too obsessed with himself to care about the students. Even though he offers his office hours, he will just end up making fun of you for not understanding the concept.
I have mixed feelings about this professor. On the positive side, he is funny, and actually makes math interesting. And he seems to care about his students even though he is often sarcastic. On the downside, during test review days he wouldn't answer questions, just referred us to the tutors. And tests were harder than stuff covered in class.
Yes, Kia is sarcastic and loves to joke at everyone's expense, including his own! That's what made this class fun! But when it comes to the material he focuses and explains it very effectively. But YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK! He won't do it for you, but he always makes himself available to his students and really wants them to succeed. Thanks Kia!!
Statistic is a difficult class no matter who is teaching it. Kia is a smart, sarcastic teacher which makes the class fun. You have to study to get a good grade.I did not use his office hours a lot, but was studying every day. Do not blame him for your grade but at the same time he could give some room for extra points or ways to improve your grade.
Kia is an awesome teacher. Don't take this class and only show up for tests and expect to pass. If you show up everyday and take notes, it will definitely pay off. He is very sarcastic but if you can roll with the punches you'll be fine. He let us drop the lowest test score at the end. Homework is assigned but not mandatory. No quizzes. 4 Exams.
He is not a bad teacher but his jokes get really old after a while. I also don't like the way he bullies some of the students. Also, he doesn't follow the book at all so it's best to focus on the worksheets he hand out. On the positive side, if you go to his office hours he will answer all your questions very thoroughly.
KIA HAS A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. I HATE MATH BUT I LOOKED FORWARD TO HIS CLASS EVERY DAY. I STRUGGLED WITH THE TESTS BUT HE WAS VERY HELPFUL AND ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS & I GOT AN A IN THE CLASS. NO MANDATORY HOMEWORK. NO QUIZZES. YOU NEED THICK SKIN & A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR TO ENJOY THIS CLASS. IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE KIA IS NOT THE TEACHER FOR YOU.
Oh my god, I wish I could get all my classes with him. I don't know who can give him less than great ! You should be lazy and out of order to not like him ! If you are in the class to study and not to sleep and play, then you will give him the best grade in the world ! I never had such a wonderful experience in the class with any professor before.
Kia is a great professor. If you dont have a self confidence then its your problem ! He is very caring, clear and great in teaching the most difficult subjects. You can understand the math which, you never did before. He is a smart professor ! He wants you to work on the problem so you learn and never forget it ! Which, is the best method.Thanknyou Kia
Kia is a unique Professor, with a power to control the class, teaches the most difficult subject in a way that can be a peice of cake for you. You have to be a serious with a clear goal to enjoy his class! If you are one of those who wants to have fun and just be just dont start, this wonderful, great and energetic, caring Professor is not yours !
Kia was the best professir I've ever had in my life. He cares about every single student.I truly enjoyed his class. His method of teaching is very unique. He is brilliant. The way he controls the class is amazing. His class is fun, motivating and at the same time challenging which, helps you to be prepare for next level. He is the best professor
Kia is the best professor, his explanations are very clear and organized, his class is not boring at all , you are expected to show up and do the work and if you do you will do really well , thanks Kia for a great class
Kia is the best! I loved being in his class. If I hadn't moved I'd take math with him every semester.
Kia cares about his students and wants everyone who tries, to succeed. He makes math fun to go to despite it being a completely boring topic. You will enjoy this professor and be glad you took his class.
He is the Best Professor Ever.No one can teach like him.clear,clear,clear. When you have this Professor you can not get any other one, so please dont get him, you get into a big trouble.you get use to the BEST so no one can satisfy you and the problem starts, so if you want trouble get him. No one can teach like him. he has his own way. The BEST.
He's really sassy and sarcastic but a great teacher. He will probably tease you at some point so if you can't take a joke I wouldn't take him. Other than that he's really funny and helpful. He made class fun, I'd take him again.
Kia is a funny guy but tries harder to make jokes than to actually teach math. Homework isn't mandatory so you must do well on every test to get a good grade. Wouldn't recommend him to people who want to get a good grade in math.
Kia is one of the best math professors i have ever had! yes, he is pretty sarcastic and his humor is a bit dry and harsh, but he never means it personally! his tests are fair, no homework, but it is really important that you study on your own time! he offers extra credit on ALL of his tests!!! DONT BUY THE BOOK! other than that he's great!
Kia's a great teacher. If you are willing to put the work in. you too can get an A in Math. Kia goes over everything you will need to pass this class and understand the concepts. Homework is not mandatory, but if you want the A, you will find the motivation to do it. On top of all that, Kia is pretty darn funny. I've never laughed so much in math.
very good with providing extra help when needed.
This is my second class i have taken with kia! seriously great teacher, I have never gotten good grades in math, and I got A and B with kia! makes it easy to understand what he wants and expects of his students!
Super sarcastic, doesn't use the book at all. Lots of handouts. Teaches from a certain calculator. No homework or quizzes, just tests. Hard class but go to his office hours to succeed. Attendance is mandatory and is a big part of the grade
Kia is not a bad guy, but I wouldn't recommend him. He can be funny sometimes but his sarcasm didn't sit well with everyone. I ended up dropping the class half way through the semester because I was slipping behind so badly. The grades are all based on tests only. If you're a DSPS student, find a different professor.
He's sarcastic, and offends people on a daily basis. He doesn't use the book or provide a guideline as to which section he's lecturing from but expects you to somehow know. Handouts galore that don't reflect anything that's on the test. Worst teacher I've ever had. This will be my first ever grade below a B. I would never recommend him.
he's a cool teacher not a good teacher, big difference! You need to do your HW and teach your self most of the material. needs to work on teaching instead of his joke's.
Do not take this class unless you are familiar w stats already!! Kia told us the first day of class that he doesn't care if we flunk. He is not helpful at all, doesn't use the textbook, grammar in his questions on the exams are unclear, and questions on the exams are not like the homework handouts he gives us. It's like he is difficult on purpose
Kia is a very sarcastic teacher and tends to offend people with his remarks, if you are not on his good side this class is very difficult. He sincerely wants to help but his remarks to your questions cause you to not want to ever ask. don't take this class if you don't know how to do it already! No homework or quizzes, just tests.
Kia is such a good teacher! He really, really cares about his students and wants to help! As long as you study for tests and ask questions, you will pass the class easily. Yes he can be sarcastic, but it is never to hurt students, he is very funny, and also gets the job done. He made the class very fun, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Don't be fooled by the bad comments. Kia pulled me aside to tell me he knew I could do better after failing my first 2tests; he offered tutoring ANYTIME you needed and really wants his students to pass if you are willing to work for it. If you are sensitive to jokes DONT take him. He is very sarcastic and quotes Mean Girls a lot. GREAT TEACHER
If you feel that you are not an adequate test taker, do not take Kia's class; every single point in the class comes from tests. Kia is honestly one of the funniest/quick witted person I have ever met. Definitely not an easy A, you have to work for it. Be prepared to be given a random name for the semester; for example, Josh.
So far, in my 1 1/2 year in college, this is the best teacher that I have had. Very Funny. However, much discipline and hard work is required to pass his class.
Show up to class. This teacher will help you pass his course if you show effort and interest in becoming a productive human being even if your Math skills lack.
A class with Kia is a double-edged sword. If your quality of life has a high correlation with the amount of laughs that you have in a day, then this class will be well worth your time. On the other hand, Kia expects quality class participation, quality studying habits, and a respectful attitude.
Very hard tests. If you skip a day it will be hard to catch up. Do not recommend him as a professor. Worst personality.
Kia is very sarcastic and very often mean with his jokes. He is and rarely willing to help. During class if you ask a question, be ready for a mean joke and the entire class to laugh at you!!! He can deduct 200 hundred points for a random reason and even if you get an A on EVERY test, you can end up with an F at the end of the semester! STAY AWAY!!
If you receive disability & can record classes, be prepared to defend that right all the ways to the dean, but if you do it (which you should), he will begrudgingly comply. He tried discussing this with me in class while it was quiet so everyone could hear. Really dude? + no hw so all points in tests, which have the hardest forms of the ?s. Dropped
There's no hw, but tests are the most ridiculous tests I have ever taken. After he teaches you the material he doesn't really go back to practice it, just expects you to know it by the next time you come in. When the tests comes, he makes each Q the hardest possible version of the material he taught, with NO practice on them! **AVOID AT ALL COST**
Kia is one of a kind and that's really the only way to describe him. During lectures he can confuse some of his work and end up confusing you. His tests are difficult but passable and if you like to joke around he had a great sense of humor. He gives no extra credit or homework so al of the points are based on your test scores. Not an easy class.
I liked his personality and his sarcasm. Although, by the end of the semester it seemed like he didn't like our class anymore (the 10 or 12 left out of 40). His jokes became meaner about us. It was kind of freeing though, because he'd make fun of you regardless. All points from tests, second test was the hardest thing ever until the final.
A great teacher, super smart & knowledgeable, knows his material very well, very organized, teaches clearly step by step with lots of examples, has good handwriting & patiently uses different colors to show better. If you take notes, review them, and do the suggested HW, you will succeed.
He's very sarcastic, I found him to be very funny. Doesn't collect homework, as long as you get it done you'll be able to do well on his tests. Gives partial credit on problems where answer is wrong, but the work is correct. Gives you every opportunity to help you pass.
He taught my Math 253 class as well. Overall he tried to help students out as much as possible and tried to make class interesting with occasional sarcasm. If you need help and show that you care about the class he'll help you out.
This class is not to be taken lightly. Kia is more than willing to help you understand the content but you must be willing to put the effort into it. As for his personality, Kia is very sarcastic and enjoys bantering with the students. I personally enjoyed the class and appreciated his sense of humor. This class was difficult but worth taking.
He is a very good teacher
If you would like to try and learn from an egotistical bully who cares more about impressing the young cute girls in his class, this is the class for you. He will excessively insult you if he finds it to be appropriate. He basically sees himself as god in the classroom and has no concern for your higher education. Take Quigley if you want to learn.
Kia is AMAZING. If you participate in lectures and can understand drysarcastic humor--TAKE HIM. He is willing to help all students, as long as they care about the class. He is not an easy A, but if you do the homework (which is not collected or graded), you will pass.
This class was extremely difficult. He made the each chapter much harder that what it actually is. I took Math 7 again this semester and It was not difficult at all and understood it easily. There are NO quizzes and NO HW for points. Your chance is just the tests.
He's absolutely hilarious. Take him if you want to learn a lot of math, without any of the tedious homework attributed to it. The grades are based entirely off of tests, so they dictate your entire outcome. You don't have to come to class if you don't want to, but I recommend coming for his weird stories about milking dolphins for profit.
Kias main focus as a college professor is to be funny; I really hope you read this one kia... you are a very immature college teacher and I dont know how you got hired as a college professor, I think elementary school wouldve been a better suit for you. Keep this in mind Kia, you are a teacher not a cheesy comedian.
Ill put this straight for anyone taking professor kia. He is no doubt a very funny person and quite familiar with the subject of stats. However, kia expects a lot from his students and although he doesn't require you to do the homework, your only chance at passing the class is through exams. That being said, dont take kia if youre a bad test taker.
The class is based on 4 tests and a final. He acts like he's so funny when he's really childish, and makes fun of the kids who ask questions. Avoid this class unless you are prepared to teach yourself stats and get tutored regularly.
Kia is only "funny" if you enjoy seeing your fellow students harassed and disrespected at all turns. The worst part is that he actually gives really fantastic lectures, very clear and informative, but those lectures have little bearing on the tests (which are the entirety of your grade). Also very unclear about his expectations for students.
Kia is a great professor. He is very helpful if you reach out to him. The class is based on four exams and the final. All exams and the final are based on the lectures, homework (that is not graded), and worksheets. The book sucks, but you need to get it. If you want to really understand math take this class. He is hilarious, NOT CHEESY!
Had taken him over summer and found the tests ridiculously difficult. I had answered test Q's correctly but hadn't shown the same method therefore I received 20% credit per answer. he may have some other issues that he needs to resolve before teaching another semester. I had made math my life over this summer and still received my lowest math grade
Taking Math10 with Kia is a nightmare. He does not use a book so if you need a reference point or more problems to understand a topic you are out of luck. He tells the class that the on campus tutors can't help because they don't know HIS material. He is very hard to approach and offers VERY little help. Take all your math at IVC. Stay Away.
Worst teacher. Not helpful at all. None of the information is based on the book. His tests are only a few questions but they are worth 10 points each. There is no other way to get your grade up. No homework. Don't take his class.
Honestly ive never had to study for a test in my life until I took him, he made me realize that I cant BS every one of my classes and that I NEED to challenge myself, im currently in his 253 class the test I studied hard for I got an A the test I didn't study for I got an F he doesn't mess around, know the material (aka, how math works) get an A
I took Kia because I had him for a sub one year for another math class. Man did I make a mistake, his lectures have nothing to do with his test and test are the only thing he grades. Theres no homework because theres no book that he uses. His review sheets are totally random and have absolutely nothing to do with the test. Avoid this teacher!!!
By far the worst teacher and one of the most rude people I have ever encountered. He bullies students for asking questions and makes them feel dumb. His lectures do not help at all with his tests and although stats requires a calculator, you will only get a good grade on the tests if you do them "his way". AVOID THIS CLASS.
Kia is the Greatest of all Professors I have ever had, I had him for Math 253 and will retake him for Math 10. Kia is the BEST !!!!!!!
Not an easy A class. Take him if you really want to LEARN the material as a foundation for higher level courses. Sometimes the lectures techniques are different from the book. Cannot just skip class and learn from the book. If you are motivated, put in the time to study/do homework and really want to learn the material, you will do well.
I took Math 253 and 251 three different times and both my final times were with Kia and he was the ONLY and I mean ONLY professor that I felt cared about the students. Show up, study, and actually try and you'll pass. Kia is a great professor. yes he is tough but, welcome to COLLEGE this isn't high school anymore so don't expect it to be easy.
People are way too critical of Kia. Yeah, he's not for everyone. But, his lectures were helpful, he gives tons of handouts to help you study, and if he can tell you're trying, he will help you out. STUDY. USE EMBEDDED TUTORS IN LRC. He's an awesome guy albeit occasionally ridiculous.
If you're looking to get an easy A, or even need an A on your transcript, I wouldn't recommend this class at all. This class is one the most difficult, painful, but rewarding classes you can take. Kia is a great and inspirational guy, and if you're willing to put it work he will help the most he can. Kia is an incredible guy; don't expect an A..
Stats is a challenging class to pass. Kia has a cheesy sense of humor with a heavy dose of sarcasm which makes all of his lectures entertaining. He is more than happy to help those who want to help themselves. If you show initiative and drive, he is more than willing to help you succeed. Grades very fairly and provides EC on all tests. No homework.
Professor Kia nade it super easy to understand the material. There was no need to do h.w. since lectures were so clear. He grades based on 4 tests and one final (drops lowest test score). He gives "practice test" for every one of them. He's a blunt person with his sarcastic sense of humor, dont take him if easily offended. Funniest math teacher.
I took Kia for Math 253 and Math 10. Great professor, knowledgeable and fun to be around with. Math is hard but to succeed, get good notes, print out the worksheets before the class otherwise he will kick you out and redo the worksheet over and over. He assigns homework but will not be graded, if you do them will do great in the exams.
Absolutely adored kia, I am transferring to SBCC otherwise i would definitely take him for stats 10. He was literally the best, and probably the funniest person I've ever met. Attendance is required forsure. His grading is straight forward, its based off your five test you have. If you do all the homework (thats not graded) you will pass.
The thing I like most about Kia is that he's willing to do anything (within reason) to help you succeed, as along as you're also willing to put in the effort.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is not funny at all and is one of the worst professors at Saddleback. He is rude to students who ask questions and his class structure is horrible. He does not explain chapters clearly and goes extremely fast. Do yourself a favor and do not register.
He tries too hard to be funny. Uses sarcasm during inappropriate times in lecture.
Do not take him!!! His class is based off 5 test only with no graded homework that is due. He likes to think he's funny but, he is sarcastic and rude towards the students. I would not take him ever! Only took him for one class and I decided that I wasn't going to succeed with his teaching skills!!!
He's extremely rude and hard to approach. When asking questions finds it funny to be rude or sarcastic back, he loves to belittle you or make you feel stupid. Drops you with a W if you miss 2 classes. Challenging tests, grade based on 5 tests. He's extremely intelligent but not a good professor!
Professor will judge you and also make fun of you for answering questions wrong. I learned more from a five minute YouTube tutorial than 2.5 hours of lecture. He acts high and mighty, asking students to call him lord Kia. Looks down on community college, told my class that we're technically high schoolers when I'm 21 years of age.
Kia is a funny guy but can be rude. He has zero patience for students who do not take school seriously. His tests are really hard and are way different than homework, book, work sheets, and study guides. He is quite the character to say the least and says some outrageous comments but if you have tough skin you will find it hilarious.
Funny guy but doesn't make students feel welcome to answer questions b/c he'll make fun of you regardless. He writes all his own tests with grammatical errors, which would confuse me. I'd understand the textbook but not his tests.. He even told the class everyone fails the 2nd test instantly.. if that is so, there's probably something wrong w it??
Kia expects you to work hard and to pay attention / follow directions; if you do so, you will pass with flying colors and enjoy the class. If you invest your time into him, he will pay it forward. Also, be sure to ALWAYS print out notes and worksheets ahead of time or he WILL kick you out. I highly recommend you take him only if you're dedicated!
Kia is one of the best teachers I've had by far. In the begginning he might have a really big ego, but thats just how he is. Made me take class seriously, and really cares for his students. The class is hard in general- and all the people who say he's the worst honestly couldnt suck it up to complete the semester so i wouldnt listen to them! 10/10
I can think of three different times within the semester I was trying to summon the courage to drop Kia's class. It was by far one of the most challenging classes I have taken. With that being said, it was by far the most rewarding too. Kia will challenge you but if you give him the time and the effort, you will be properly rewarded.
I'm in the third week of this class and I regret taking this guy. It's difficult to ask a question without being condescended to, or being interrogated. Although, he has a sense of humor, I'll give him that.
I went into this class motivated and knew it was going to be a challenge, but I can't tell you enough to AVOID this class at all costs. After taking Kia, I would of rather waited another semester to try and get another professor. I studied very hard with hours of tutoring under my belt, but his tests are completely different from what he teaches u.
Fast paced and will make fun of you if your question is not worthy. So, you have to have thick skin. Also, If you're trying to take math at an easy level, do not take Kia. Kia warns you in advance that his class will be your LIFE for that duration. Stick it out, you MIGHT/could pass. Ps. He's one of the funniest guys you will ever meet. Be present
I was told by a few students to drop Kia's class, however I decided to stick it out and study really hard to prove them and myself wrong. I had an outside tutor for this class and still did horrible. Currently, retaking this class with a different professor and it doesn't even feel like the same class. The class was difficult and I do not recommend
Professor Kia Share does NOT give any points for homework and determines your overall grade ONLY by test scores. If you only have a basic grasp on math, it will be impossible to get a high score on a test. And he does NOT like hearing people ask obvious to him.
I would avoid this guy at all costs. That is really all I can say.
worst teacher i have had at saddleback DO NOT TAKE!
If you're thinking of taking class with Kia, don't do it. His grading is based strictly off of the tests and half of the content on the tests was not even taught. Oh, and don't ask a question because he won't answer it.
Took stats in high school and loved it. I knew college would be a lot harder but I had gotten As. I ended with a D and have to retake this summer. He does not use a stats calculator so good luck. I was afraid to ask questions as he makes fun of dumb questions. He's very cocky and talks in the 3d person Ew. Over half the class dropped by the end.
In the first few weeks I hated the class, but it gets better as time goes on. If you stick it out, you can get through it. Towards the end now, and there are only like 10 of us left because he scares people off with his personality and tough first test. I wouldn't take him again, hut theres not a lot of good choices for math teachers
He makes a lot of jokes in class and feels good about it even if sometimes he is being very sarcastic and rude. His lectures are good and he is clear about points. He is a tough grader and exams are hard. Good luck getting an A
This is my second time taking one of Kia's classes. He is really good at teaching and explaining his material. He is utterly hilarious and if you do not find him funny.. bye bye. Math in general is hard and he will move mountains to help any students who need it. He just wants his students to care and take school seriously.
Kia is honest and sarcastic. I liked his humor but I can see how some could hate him. Math is boring but he made it fun! If you act like a college student and care about school and take his class seriously he helps you otherwise he does not care. Do not miss a class do the worksheets and take advantage of his office hours.
Unless you're willing to challenge yourself, study, and go to every class, do not take Kia. Otherwise, he's a very good teacher who explains things very clearly. He just goes over the top sometimes with sarcasm, but if you have some tough skin, you'll learn to find it hilarious. The key to success in his class is the worksheets above all else.
I took Kia for 253 and I have to admit to pass his class you have to put in work. I was lazy and slacked off a lot but I pulled through with an all nighter (not recommended). Luckily I had Pass or No Pass and that saved me. Yes he does have a sarcastic humor and some might see it as "offensive" but he's a very caring guy, especially when u need it
If you can't take sarcastic remarks, don't take this class. There are many times where he would go over the material specifically, and students would ask him to repeat himself. Otherwise, Kia is really helpful if you pay attention and ask the right questions. His tests cover what's in discussed class. Prefers a Casio calculator over anything else.
Not a good professor. I would ask questions and he would make me feel dumb for them. Don't go to office hours he will make you feel dumb and won't answer questions. More then half the class dropped. He liked me which helped and yes he is occasionally funny. I worked my butt off to get a B very difficult class. made me hate math and I am good at it.
The hilarious thing about Kia is that he is one of the most highly reviewed professors meaning you WILL have a strong opinion about him. All reviews good and bad are true, so I won't repeat, but do read them and know they both apply. If you are already good at math, take him. If you are struggling, don't. If you are mediocre at math, don't.
Kia is a great professor and he knows what he is teaching to his students. He is funny and has the most sarcasm. He grades fairly. Show up to class every time or else it will be hard to catch up! He gives hw assignments but not for a grade, only to help you. He gives study guides. Your whole grade is entirely based on tests. He drops the lowest!
Kia is hands down my favorite professor. He cares, if you care and you must be willing to put in work if you want an A in his class. Stats with Kia was my most challenging class yet, it was the most rewarding by the end of the semester! I highly recommend taking this class, I am SO Happy(: with all I have learned. Plus, free coffee during O-HRS!
I've always enjoyed math until I took a class with Kia. He is fair in grading but makes his test impossible. His lectures are clear but don't dare to ask a question as he will insult you generously. He can be entertaining but if you are not good at math or cannot take a joke avoid Kia. If you upset him and waste his time; prepare to feel his wrath.
Kia is not for everyone. It is definitely not an easy A class and his personality is not for everyone. He makes you work hard for your grade. After the second test I put a ton of time into this class but it was rewarding!! he helps if you show him that you care. 4 tests and he drops the lowest. Do the worksheets and take advantage of office hours.
This class was the worst math class I ever took. He's very rude! He makes fun of you in front of everyone!! if you ask Questions he makes fun of you. Avoid this class because you gonna end up wasting your time and he tells you to drop!
Hands down my favorite teacher at Saddleback!! I am in trig right now and I had kia for math 253. He had us work really hard but I am glad that he did. I learned a lot and I am using what I learned now. His lectures are clear, worksheets are useful and class was never dull! 4 midterms and he drops the lowest score. Like those that participate.
KIA is not a good teacher. That's very hard for me to say because I am a teacher myself and to be forced to withdraw from his class a big deal for me. His class is very test heavy. He does not answer students' questions, is narcissistic, and doesn't give good feedback. I'm pretty disappointed in him... Not recommended.
If you want to learn math take Kia's class. Avoid if you are not willing to work hard and cannot take a joke. He makes math fun! Kia has a sassy attitude but he does care about his students. Do the worksheets and take advantage of the tutors at the LRC. I enjoyed his class and will take stats with him next semester!
He is a funny Professor that is always sarcastic, but is always willing to help if needed. He likes to make jokes a lot so if your easily butt hurt then this is not a class for you. His grading is tough but he explains everything that he is looking for so its all on you to do it. recommended if willing to learn and laugh.
Kia is sarcastic and loves to joke at everyone's expense, including his own! But when it comes to math he means business. His lecture are clear so are his expectations. I really like how he used different colors on the board. It made it easier to follow. He wants you to do the work on the problems so you can learn. He is caring and energetic!
Kia is that kind of person that will find a group of students in his class and focus on them and not in a good way. Often making many feel insecure about themselves. He doesnt take homework and the entire class is based on exams. He gives practice tests but they are nothing like the real exams. You better off taking another Professor.
Kia was the most condescending professor I've ever had. The only time I've ever walked out of a class thinking this is what a community college professor is stereotyped as. Ridicules students for reasonable concerns. Many students were given 0s for the day because of the last 5 minutes of class they hadn't printed out his lecture slides.
I took math 253 with Kia last semester. He is smart, witty, funny and brutally honest so avoid if you cannot deal with sarcasm. 4 test and he drops the lowest one. I am a returning student and I had to work really hard to pass his class but it was worth it. He will help you as long as you show him you are interested. Do all the worksheets.
Kia is awesome but a bit wacky. Im not a fan of Math, but this class was never boring. Really helpful, wants you to understand. If you are willing he is willing to help. no attendance, no homework. but should attend every class to understand the material. if you miss one day, you'll be missing a lot.
Honestly if you can't take teasing from a teacher, do NOT take his class. He tries to be funny but can end up just being mean. He lectures very quickly as well, be ready to take notes. He does however give bonus points on tests, so that's nice. Your whole grade is just tests, hw is optional.
This is the most difficult class i've ever taken. Everybody in the class admits they are in danger of failing. No H.W. Only grade is from exams - no notes. Tough grader. If you're familiar with stats it might be fine, if you don't know stats, goodluck.
Kia is definitely charismatic. Ive had him for Math 253 353 for both continuity purposes, also I find his style of teaching meshes well with my personality. He does his best to make algebra fun by cracking jokes along the way, sometimes at the expense of the student so thick skin is required. If you have a sense of humor, you will enjoy his class.
Kia was the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take this class unless you are already gifted in math and math comes easy to you. He makes you feel stupid if you ask a question about the material and completely judges you. Your grade is only based off of the exams and they are awful, he makes the questions really tricky on purpose.
The other reviews have said pretty much everything. He's an ok teacher, and covers course material well (if slightly rushed). However, he can be abrasive and focus too hard on being funny instead of communicating important details with the students, made doubly difficult by his English. Would recommend prior stats experience or another teacher.
worst teacher ever... do not even know where to start... he purposely sets up the class in a manner for which students can fail. He makes you feel dumb if you do not understand something so if you are not good at math good luck. Your grade is only based off points from tests, so if you are a bad test taker you will fail and not pass. I stopped goin
Honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had, if you could even call him that. Spends his time degrading students and inflating his ego rather than help students with questions. His class feels more like a POW camp. 80% of the class dropped by the final because of his ridiculous teaching. Gives practice tests that are NOTHING like the exams
He's a really caring guy & truly wants to & will help you but only if you put in some effort as well. If your slacking off & being disrespectful you won't like him because he'll treat you the way your treating his class. He's a really tough grader & likes things done his way but gives partial and extra credit. Took him on my 3 attempt & passed.
He lightened up the intense situation with his idea of humor, which helped make the experience more enjoyable. Overall he was a good teacher who was always willing to help. You better study and make sure you attend. He is willing to give you as much help as you need. Don't buy the book!!
I would never take another class from this professor. He is sarcastic in a very crude way. He teaches very quick and is very particular when grading.
Those complaining about his style, they might have just not vibe well with his humor but their failing grade is purely their own fault. Kia lays out explicitly how he the work and tests should be done and does like to joke around on the side. He's a good guy when you pick up on his personality and will help anyone he believes is trying.
Kia is the best professor I have ever had. most of the people having a problem with his humor, because they don't get jokes. His lecture and hand writing is amazing, . He cares a lot and makes himself available after the class if he sees you need help. His embedded tutors are so helpful and they are exactly like him but a little bit nicer!
This class is very hard. He is a good professor but a tough grader. He expects you to work for your grade in the class. You're only graded on exams but he lets you drop your lowest score. Be careful of the second exam because it is the hardest and most people will end up dropping that test score. He is willing to help you outside of class as well.
If any of you will choose his class, i'm sure that you will not learn that much, I recommend that you buy the textbook and use Mathway because it's much easy to learn. And I recommend that you change your grading option into P/NP because if you take it with a letter grade I'm pretty sure that your GPA will go down.
His the worst teacher that i ever have. His teaching is not good because he is not explaining it well. He expect us that we already learn it, yea i understand that, but what if some of us forget what it is already? right. He really doesnt fully explain it well and some of the problems on the test is little different from what he taught us in class.
Dont let his sense of humor fool you. Hes not a good teacher and is more invested in himself rather than teaching you the content. Doesnt give a study guide. Wants things specific for him. Limited time to see him outside of class. Often uses the phrase not my problem
Super easy stuff! If you have more than 10 brain cells you should pass. Kia is a very smart cookie, if you pay attention to the lectures the tests will go by in a breeze. TAKE TAKE THIS CLASS IT IS AN EASY A!!!!!!
If most of the class doesnt get the problem or they are noisy. He got so mad and he just write every problems in the board and he just keep writing it and then erase it again, not even explaining it to the students what the problem is
Believe me when I say YOU HAVE TO PUT IN THE WORK TO PASS! He'll say the hw is optional, but if you wanna really understand the material and pass the course, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. I was a lousy student going into his class, but after putting in the hard work, I came out with a very strong foundation in math.
Kia is a great professor. If you pay attention, go to class, do the worksheets, practice, and study you should pass. Kia will make you work for your grade but you will learn a lot from this class. Take advantage of his office hours because he is always willing to help. Go to Kia Palooza because that's when I started to do better on exams.
Kia is definitely not the best nor the worst math teacher I've had. Tests make up the ENTIRE grade (and they're tricky), so if you're bad at tests DON'T take. I've taken stats in the past, but this class was definitely not a walk in the park. No graphing calculator usage, so everything is done with formulas and regular sci. calc. (so tedious).
One of the hardest classes Ive ever taken. Tests are hard even if you know the material. You can barely even ask questions because he is isn't nice about it and doesn't seem to want to help. Lecture doesn't teach you enough for the tests. Unless you already know statistics I wouldn't take this one.
As long as you go to class and study throughout each chapter and for the tests, you should be fine. He does a good job of explaining concepts and he makes himself available outside of class to answer any questions you have. I think the only issue people have with him is he has a dark sense of humor, but overall he is a really good professor.
Be extra careful asking questions in this class. There's a good chance you'll get called stupid. All grades come from tests and test questions are often harder than worksheet questions. He's quite clear when he explains concepts but he lectures quickly with little care for your success. If you take this class, be prepared to study a lot at home.
Do not take unless you already know statistics pretty well. Your grade is based off of tests only. Hes very sarcastic so unless you have a smart response back don't even bother asking. First class I have ever had to drop.
This was the first class I ever dropped. Terrible, boring lectures. Tests that had nothing to do with the homework or lectures. Lots of printing your own notes out. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Let's preface this. I hate math. I'm good at it, but I don't like it. Kia's class is 100% test-based, so if you don't do well with self-study and motivating yourself to work, prepare to fail. His lectures are really helpful, he has great handwriting and color-coded notes, but be prepared to make a study group and CRAM before tests.
NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He doesn't care about his students success whatsoever. He refused to answer questions that people had and constantly made jokes about students not understanding the content. After the third test, he told us we should just drop the class if we didn't get a certain grade because "we already paid him when we signed up."
This class was the first class Ive failed in college, and I get good grades. He would call other students questions dumb and make you feel bad about not understanding the content. If you dont have previous experience in the subject, or math isnt your thing,Dont take Kia. I had to learn with tutors and YouTube. Extremely hard.
He won't answer questions and makes everyone feel stupid if they don't understand a topic. His exams are hard and difficult to complete in the amount of time he provides. It's hard to maintain even a C in this class. Don't waste your time with this professor.
Kia is a great professor but you will have to try in the class. He offers office hours and study sessions and if you put in the effort he will help you. He is sarcastic but in a funny way and keeps class entertaining.
All of the negative ratings on here are accurate. He's tough if you show up and act like you don't care. If you show that you are trying, he has opportunities for extra credit and hes helpful. He does have a mean sense of humor which I loved about him but some people couldn't handle it. You're in college, grow up. I got over 100% in this class.
Tests are like, once a day
Professor Kia does care about his students and their success. An example of that is that he is available after hours, he offers study sessions almost every Friday(Kiapalooza). He is a tough Professor, he expects you to work hard, make an effort and ask questions. He does make heavy/sarcastic jokes, but don't take them personal, he's a good guy.
Overall, he is a good professor and does truly care for his students but the class was extremely hard. I've never been a math person but if I tried, I could understand it. Even with trying, this class felt impossible and I was counting down till the last day. He has a very specific way of doing things so if you don't do it his way, it's wrong.
worst experience of my life
If you take his class you will fail, unless you are a super genius who spends 10 hours a day at the LRC tutoring, but even then you probably wont pass. Only grades are from tests, which are extremely difficult. Kia is very smart and treats everyone as if they already know everything so gets upset if you ask questions. Only 5 people out of 35 passed
Hardest class of my life. Had to eat, sleep and breathe stats. Very hard grader, everything needs to be perfect. 3-4 exams total. I ended up with a B because I studied my ass off and went to LRC at least once a week. You can pass a class with a hard professor. It's up to YOU to pass.
I'd never felt the need to drop a class before, or since, taking Kia Shafe's class. He acts so aloof towards his students, treating everyone with disrespect. I get it, Professors don't need to be nice, but being terrible to your students is uncalled for. Why would you become a teacher if you hate everyone?
He is a good teacher, who expects you to put work into his course. Its not an "easy class" but he is through and gives plenty of opportunity in and out of class to go over material with him. Honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Not going to say subjective things towards him. I will tell you the key points of which I take home from attending his classes so you are aware of what is to come: No graded assignments Only grades for entire semester are going to be for 3-4 Exams Must show specific work criteria on exams to receive credit No review days, new concepts daily
Kia's class was pretty great. If you don't have thick skin and if you can't laugh at yourself, then this class is NOT for you. However, if you pay attention to the lectures and put in time outside of class to study, you'll pass. The only thing I didn't like was the group project, but other than that if you ask questions and PRACTICE, you'll succeed
Kia is not a bad teacher and his grading system isn't all that different from that of other professors. His lectures are clear and if you pay attention, come to class prepared, and actually do the worksheets that he provides, you will pass this class. Don't waste money on the textbook, the worksheets are enough to get the concepts.
This professor does not give a clear explanation to questions, tests are difficult, lessons do not go in order which is confusing, if you dont do everything his way the class will be a problem, especially when you show your work. On a good note, he does drop your lowest test grade.
Hopefully the class gets better, but as of chapter 2 more than half of my class walked out because he failed to teach us the chapters.
Kia makes everything in his class more difficult than it needs to be. He demands respect from his students, but doesn't offer them the same. When a majority of the class struggles, it's obviously because no one is working hard enough. Not that perhaps something isn't working on his end. His class isn't impossibly hard, it's just not for most people
Do not recommend if you are not a math person. At first I loved his sarcasm but then it was just rude. He acts as if you should already know the answer to your question. So many people dropped his class, it was basically almost empty towards the end. Only grades on tests, textbook not needed. No homework really, but he has worksheets, not graded.
I took statistics with Professor Shafe this past Spring. The class was online, but it did require a lot of work. I spent anywhere between 8-12 hours on this class per week in order to understand and complete the material. Theres lot of homework, but its what you need to be successful. I took this class as a mom working full time. You can do it.
Took math 10 with Kia in the spring semester. He was super helpful after we had to move to the online format. Clear instructions, and quick replies to emails. Tests were fare but you have to do the homework.
Took online statistics with Prof. Shafe last semester. The class instructions were clear. Weekly homework,2 tests, 4 quizzes and he drops the lowest score. He was quick to reply back to emails. You really have to do the HW and pay attention to test reviews. My only complaint is that some weeks we had a lot of work to do and some weeks very little.
I took math 10 with professor Shafe in summer. He had clear grading system, very good with responding to emails and weekly reminders.
unless you really love math, don't take his online class just take the class at IVC my friends taking that class and it's so much easier and slower paced.
I chose a course with no lectures dates so I was expecting a lot of independent work, however the amount of hours I had to spend everyday studying was ridiculous, the online program we used was terrible, and when I reached out for help I didn't get much. However I got an A because he gives multiple tries for tests and quizzes, and he rounds
Its a good class if you have time. I took it online and it probably takes anywhere from 3-5 hours of work. I liked how he structured it but it was very time consuming. Also you have to get an outside source which can be anywhere from 80-100 dollars
Down right disgrace of a professor. DOES NOT answer any questions posed in emails. I taught every lesson to myself as he would just post text book pages not an actual lecture explaining confusing concepts. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR OR COURSE. Ultimately, if you do take this course prepare for endless frustration and confusion.
I took math 253 with professor Shafe. He was a helpful math teacher, he sent us weekly emails to remind us of our work and was quick to reply back to emails. Class was well organized and I like how he gave us feedback on our work. Tests were fair and exam reviews were really helpful.
DO NOT TAKE KIA SHAFE! I am a straight-A student and did not pass this course. This was online but this professor had no empathy for the difficulties of online learning. Shafe didn't provide any lecture videos and expected the class to learn from animated characters. I am good ad statistics and with another professor, I would have gotten an "A"
I took statistics online with professor Shafe. I start with what I didn't like, I work more than 30 hours per week so some weeks the amount of work was insane and the amount of class participation was below average. What I liked was how he was quick to respond to emails, his statcrunch solutions were really helpful and Canvas was nicely organized.
It had been many years since I had taken a math course so I was not too sure what to expect when beginning this class, this class was a struggle for me but I am very happy I took it his class was insightful and interesting. Professor Kia was prompt in replying to emails and giving us feedback. Overall it was a lot of work but it was very organized
All the negative reviews are ACCURATE AF and the positive ones are false reviews. Kia even told the class that he gives himself good ratings on a common basis. He did not give good help to students. When students had serious questions, he would always find a cringe joke rather than going directly to the point. DO NOT TAKE HIM or you will suffer.
Professor Kia was such a good helpful professor, I could not have asked for a better math professor!! He was very supportive and encouraging. I worked very hard and it paid off.
Hands down one of the best online classes that I have ever taken!! This class was a ton of work but I am glad I did in eight weeks. Very organized schedule with clear expectations and a few opportunities for extra credit. I personally liked how professor Kia was quick to reply back to questions, and his weekly updates. Do the midterm reviews!!!
I had to drop his class due to personal issues but he is really a good teacher, organized and you can tell he cares for his students, I will be retaking it with him in the fall.
I took kias class online last year and it was honestly this most boring, unreasonable class ever. The homework was so redundant and was extremely time consuming. She was not flexible or understanding at all.
Professor Kia was great and very understanding with me if I felt like I was falling behind at all. He was encouraging and prompt with emails, a very time-consuming class yet involved the necessary repetition to truly understand the fundamental concepts of I liked the layout of the quizzes and use of statcrunch.
Im not going to lie, based on the reviews here I had mixed feelings about this class but professor Kia was amazing! I benefited from the supportive initiative to keep us determined through the course. I also loved our amazing embedded tutor!! she was a really great element in this course. Make sure to do the extra credits!
Definitely felt like this was one of the harder math classes Ive taken mostly due to the lack of a human teaching me. Grading is based on homework, 4 quizzes, three exams and a final. The exams were similar to the reviews so that gave like a familiarity to the exam. Professor Kia was very encouraging, he was fast to respond to our emails.
This class was definitely a lot to take in but once you find a schedule, it was so much more manageable. Personally, I think Kia did great with answering any questions I had during the semester. Kia and his TA were both very responsive and quick to get to the bottom of any issues that we came across.
Professor Kia was always very nice and on top of everything and I can tell he genuinely cares about his students. He was one of the most caring and encouraging professors I have had at Saddleback, I was never confident in math, but I feel I am ready to take the classes that I need to succeed as a future computer science major.
I felt super overwhelmed at the beginning of this course, however, the course is setup in a way that it is very easy to navigate around what we need to do. Kia did a great job with reminders and keeping us motivated. I feel like the most important thing in this class was having the necessary time and dedication it required.
Overall, this course was super solid and I really enjoyed the organization week to week. I also really liked when we had discussion boards that were not math related.
I took a six-week summer course, at first, I was caught off guard by the amount of weekly sections, but after spreading out the sections, it was not too bad. In my opinion this class was pretty well managed all throughout. I also appreciated Kias support and it made me want to do better in the course.
Super hyper-specific and unnecessary homework criteria. Won't give u credit if you turn in hw an hr before the deadline, because that "demonstrates poor time management." By far one of the most inconsiderate profs I've had, would not suggest taking her courses.
I cannot be as accurate as some, since I had to drop this class. But it was so unrealistic. I had to take an 8-week course this semester. Kia wanted us to dedicate 30 hours a week (completing 1/2 sections daily) to focus only on this class. If you are taking any classes more than this, work a job, or want any free time-- DO NOT take this class.
The 8-week class was challenging and heavy in workload but Kia did a great job in providing us with resources that allow us to succeed in this class. I loved the office hours every week with Karen and having multiple attempts on the quizzes and assignments was a huge relief for me.
This was my first time back at school in years and although heavy in workload Kia designed the course in a way that was very organized. Kia was very encouraging and quick at responding to worries and questions. Karen office hours were really helpful, multiple attempts on homework and quizzes were a huge plus.
I think this class was pretty straightforward, tests were alight and the reviews before tests really helped me to better understand the material. I feel like if you put the time in then you will get through the course, taking good notes is a key! Professor Kia was very encouraging and pretty quick to respond to our questions.
Got A's in all my other classes, but his. He doesn't care for his students and marked my 5 points for having my dog (who is blind) bark while I was taking the test. Also just so you know you have to show id, scan your room and desk, and show you're scrap paper before and after the test. A complete violation of privacy.
Not the best Teacher for this subject. Uses math lab for the whole course and it feels like your teaching yourself. He also has turn in times ranging from 7am and 5pm on Fridays making it very difficult to keep up with his times. I would only take this course if you are desperate and need to get this course out of the way. Great at reminding todohw
The amount of homework assigned each week was almost impossible to accomplish. Professor Kia emailed the class and said, " if you work I suggest taking a leave while in this class." I do not suggest this class if you have a job or other responsibilities every day. At least 50 hours of homework every 4 days.
nice professor but this class makes me wanna unal*ve myself at times b/c of the workload
I loved the whole online class. It saves so much time and money to take classes online. I will say this was definitely the hardest math I have taken to date, but that did not mean that I did not enjoy the class. The course was easy to navigate and well planned. Professor Shafe was truly encouraging throughout the semester.
Insane amount of work. I saw the class went from 67 students down to 34 students by 2 and half weeks in. Absolutely worst professor I have ever had. If you want a challenge take the class. If you work, sports, have a life, and want to learn at a moderate stressful pace DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Its possible to take the class and pass, but its hard.
Very encouraging and caring professor, you can tell he genuinely cares. I was very afraid of taking an online math class but the course was well organized and there were a ton of resources available on canvas. He was very responsive to emails and really good at providing feedback.
Statistics is a tough subject but I liked the self-paced environment, and the setup made it easy to navigate the course. There are Three online monitored exams straight from the reviews, multiple quizzes and opportunities for extra credit. Sends reminders and is easily accessible and really responsive to emails.
Took professor Shafe online for statistics, this class does require a lot of work but the homework, quizzes, midterm and final are all doable. You don't have to remember any formulas because you can make your own formula sheet for the midterm and final, study guides are super helpful. There are 3 extra credits and weekly discussions.
You will learn a lot but be ready to work and learn for your grade. Professor Shafe did a great job organizing the course and making it easy for us to learn and earn a good grade. Thanks Professor Shafe!
Professor Kia is really amazing because Statistics is not an easy class. I really like that she always supported us and sent feedback and motivation messages It was really encouraging. I also really appreciated the ability to have extra credits and multiple attempts on the tests!!!
I thought that this class was run very straight forward and easy to follow along, the homework assignments took a very long time, but they were very helpful in learning the material. I believe the extra credit assignments do help bring your grade up. Overall, I think this class has taught me a lot and I really enjoyed it!
Professor Shafe sent weekly reports and always encouraged students to do the work. Canvas was straightforward, and I liked the extra credits and reviews.
I took this course because I had already taken a similar course in the past so I knew I could do a large portion of it by myself. I am not the best at math so I was a bit nervous to take this class online but everything was organized so well in the modules which was really helpful.
Don't take any of Kia's classes if you are not already a math genius. His "teaching" is doing random problems on the board and doing them wrong half the time. This is the type of class where you are expected basically teach yourself. Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews, this is the worst math professor. I made an account just to warn people
Overall, Kia was probably the best professor I have had in college. He makes himself available outside of class, and is always willing to help his students. His class was challenging, but he offers multiple extra credits and is generous with partial credit on the exams. Study guides were always provided before the exams and final. Take him!
When taking his MATH10 class be prepared to have 7 assignments a week, no late work, no makeup tests, and no makeup quizzes no matter the situation. If you work full-time, play sports, or have any type of commitment outside of school I would not recommend taking this course with him or instead waiting to take it when your schedule is not as hectic.
The online program was very clear! It is very homework heavy but that's to be expected for an eight-week course. If you do the work you'll get an A, not a class you can slack off in! I have taken two of his online courses, and both were great, take him!!
His class is extremely organized and clear. He provides fast feedback and is available to help by email. Test reviews set you up for what's on the test. The grade is based mostly on homework as well as on the quizzes then the tests.
Professor Shafe is great math teacher. She is organized and gives a lot of extra credits.
When I took this class, it was all online lectures (that drone on forever) by seemingly another professor on YouTube, and a ton of discussions that were too heavily weighted and, if we're being honest, were a waste of time. The only good thing about this class is that there's so much extra credit you could probably get by with minimal effort.
studied for 2-3 hrs daily and barley got passing grades. professor and tutor are useless. would have tests/quizes from Fri-sun every week. she took those days off and woulnt respond to emails and wouldnt give extensions even if you had personal/technical issues. lec vids werent even her and everything was graded by the computor
The lectures are literally useless and are done by a high school teacher who clearly has no idea what they are doing, at least 30-40 hours a week spent on this class alone is expected of you which means you shouldnt take any other serious class along with this. Has a Q&A discussion, but for every question his response is always "get a tutor"
The teacher assigns very difficult problems to understand. I feel that the actual tests aren't based on the knowledge of statistics that we learned, but interpreting the specific wording of the same problems we get over and over and over. While an easy subject this teacher manages to make it difficult.
This teacher is just flat-out horrible. I saw these reviews but had to take pre-calc and hoped it would be ok. It turns out completely wrong and by far my least favorite and worst teacher I've ever had. My whole class flunked the first test and his response to that? "You have to take some responsibility for your life for once!" Are you serious?
I felt Professor Shafe understood how daunting and demanding a course like this can be, especially in 8 weeks. I was so impressed with how this course was set up and managed he provided resources, opportunities, and empathy for us to really do our best. StatCrunch was AMAZING at helping me learn and test reviews were a great resource.
I believe that the class as a whole was a great one, professor Shafe was so easy to communicate with which was encouraging and appreciate having multiple chances on the quizzes and tests was super helpful.
He keeps reporting all of my reviews lol, he is not a good teacher, please DO NOT TAKE HIM. He does not care about any of his students and makes the class even more difficult than it should be.
Personally, I don't like math in general therefore it's really difficult to be motivated specially when there is a huge workload and I feel the assignments could have been spaced out more. Otherwise, Professor Shafe was very helpful, encouraging, and kind.
Not difficult in terms of material but there was just SO much hw. Tried emailing abt not able to access the test and no response. Sent another email, he responded quickly saying he didn't respond the first time because I did not ask a question...Does provide lots of guides and examples on canvas though which was helpful. Takes about 16 hours a week
used PearsonMathLab. 3 exam:33%. 4 quiz:20%. HW:15%. final:24%. attendence:8%. wont answer questions;says google it.HARD exams, no study guide, wont teach all test material &show work/explain in lecture. no late hw or makeup quiz/exam. lowest quiz & 5 low hw dropped. 1-2 EC. strict attendence, miss 6hr=dropped, tardy inluded. take carillo (open note)
Gave us a study guide for the test and almost none of it was similar to the test. Hw has pretty much no impact on your grade only the tests and quizzes. Most of the kids in my class got under 50% on both tests this class is not worth it don't take.
BEWAREW! Wasted my time in KiA SHAFES precalc class. If you wonder why he has so many open seats for next semester, it's because he's BAD! Being on the waitlist for an actual GOOD teacher is better than this guy. For your sanity, pick a professor with good reviews, because all the past horrible reviews for this guy were actually true. BEWARE!
Please do not take this teacher for yourself. He doesn't care at all for his students, and when people ask him questions in class, he often gives snotty remarks or tells students to ask the lrc. I have just dropped the class, but more than half of the class is already gone and we just had a midterm. Be aware
Statistics is a very challenging class. especially since it's much different from what we are used to in high school leveled classes. Professor Shafe was very responsive to emails the amount of work was insane but the amount of extra credit is incredible compared to any other class.
I think that the class was very fair, I liked the extra credits and I feel the class was organized I felt that the quizzes and tests were fair for the most part and I liked that all of the questions were covered on the study guide that was given to us. I did not like the weekly discussions and some of the video lectures were a bit confusing.
The class was super straightforward and self explanatory, you will succeed only if you put in the effort and patience towards the class. Knowing what to expect each week was really nice. I think Kia did a great job of answering emails in a timely fashion. Being reminded every week has definitely been very helpful.
Professor Shafe was a good teacher. I withdrew due to excessive weekend homework (10+ hours weekly), straining my busy schedule. MyLab, the homework tool, was a frustrating nightmare, leading to my decision.
noticed he deleted some of my reviews. TO THOSE WHO SEE HIS "5/5" scores IGNORE THEM. IGNORE THEM! THEY ARE FOR ANOTHER KIA TEACHER!! Very bad professor can't explain anything well! NEVER TAKE HIM NEVER TAKE HIM NEVER TAKE HIM!
class was full w 40+ kids, there are 21 left now. worst prof i've had so far. mumbles while he writes on the board; doesn't teach. u gotta learn everything on your own and even then it wont suffice bc his exams are HARD and he is an extremely tough grader. take brian carillo.
Honestly, he's probably the funniest professor I've ever met. He's pretty laid back, as long as you do what you're supposed to do. My suggestion is to really pay attention and write down/remember how to do all of your problems on Statcrunch
Kia is honestly the best math teacher I have ever had. He really cares about his students and is always willing to meet with you outside of class time. I have never had a teacher who will come to school on the weekend just to help his students but Kia did just that. He was great
I came into this class with no background in pre-calc, but Kia was really willing to help. I would literally go to his office hours before every class, and he genuinely wanted me to succeed. Even if I found the class to be difficult, as long as you put in work, do the homework, and ask for help, it truly is manageable!
Don't take him for pre calc. I reapeat DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR PRE CALC. The people in my class were dropping like flies. He gives you insanity exams and he doesnt teach... During my class all he did was ARGUE with his students when they called out whenever he made a mistake, which was a frequent occurrence. He argued with students 70% of his lectures!
For all assignments notes, tests, and hw we use MyLab and for the most part it is convenient since we don't have to calculate by hand, but sometimes the textbook has wrong answers or covers stuff that he didn't learn so you have to end up teaching yourself some of it. Other than that, gives good feedback and always takes time to explain concepts.
Due to the amount of work and lack of interaction from Professor Shafe I withdrew from his class. I felt so much pressure and anxiety taking his class and the amount of time that it would take me to finish anything. Worst Professor I have ever had. I would never take his class again.
if you drop his name to the tutors at LRC or even a counselor, they will make a face bc everyone knows he's bad. class started w 40 kids, ended with 20. definitely dont take.
not great for DSPS, won't u take tests @ testing center. The room he put me in had a clock that was an hour behind which TRIPPED me out. also was so so mean to this one autistic kid in my class who kept interuptting but guy has a condition lol. not understanding at all so if you have responsibilities and problems outside of class, dont take him.
Kia was hands down the best math professor I've ever had!!! I actually enjoyed going to class!! You could tell he cared for his students, he was available even on Saturdays! Keep up the good work kia!!!
He's a funny guy. I liked him. The class format just wasn't for me. He was there if we had questions, and for lecture, but other than that we were completely on our own for the multiple daily homework assignments, various quizzes, and tests. Communication was best done in person.
I took this class years ago and I will never forget how hard this class was. He started the introduction telling us we should change it to p/np to not impact our GPA. Started with a full class and ended with 5 people. If you want to spend your time teaching yourself the material, this is probably not the class for you.
This class was the WORST 8-week accelerated class I have ever taken. Despite being advertised as a 6hrs/week course, the professor expects 20+hrs/week or more of your time to work on the course. If you have any life at all outside of school, don't take this class. Kia has no office hours. Remember to look at how many dislikes his good reviews have.
I have to admit the workload in this class was pretty hectic, time management was one of the key factors in the success of this course. Professor Shafe was very good with emails and discussions. Tests were pretty straightforward, if you completed all of your assignments, you were in a good position for taking exams.
I haven't taken a math class in a long time, so perhaps I needed more time to study than others. However, I found the homework to be repetitive and time-consuming. On the other hand, I believe Professor Kia did an outstanding job of explaining the course from the beginning. The syllabus was also comprehensive, practice tests were pretty useful.
I liked this class, based on other math courses I have taken in the past. For the most part, I personally feel like the class was set up good but the homework was totally repetitive. Professor Kia was very quick to respond to emails which was a great thing. A good amount of opportunities for extra credit!
This class was an utter nightmare from start to finish. The content was outdated and poorly organized, the instructor seemed disinterested and incompetent, and technical issues made it impossible to follow along. Save yourself the frustration and avoid this class like the plague.
This class was a disaster. The structure was chaotic, the homework was mind-numbingly repetitive, and the so-called extra credit opportunities were a joke. Professor Kia's only redeeming quality was his prompt discussion post responses, but even that couldn't salvage this train wreck of a course. Avoid at all costs.
One of the best online classes I have ever had. There are no surprises in his course, whatever you see in the homework and test reviews will be on the tests. quizzes are open notes and you get 4 attempts. He went out of his way to help me with my questions.
I have to say, Kia's class may not be suitable for everyone, as he is quite strict and could come across as intimidating. I personally believe that his teaching style has adequately prepared me for my calculus course. He was also understanding and accommodating. we had to take 3 midterms, 4 quizzes, and complete three extra credit projects.
Personally, I feel that the class was solid. I think the homework, quizzes, and exams were all fair and the class was well structured. Professor Kia was very responsive to emails and discussions, I just wish there was a little more leniency on makeups.
Do you like spending time with your friends? Going outside and doing activities? If you said Yes to any of these then do not take the online course for this class. The amount of time you spend on homework is atrocious. When you eat, you are thinking homework, and when you are sleeping, you are thinking of how the Pearson Mylab graded you unfairly.
Professor Kia is an exceptional, knowledgeable, and organized educator. He promptly responds to emails. It is essential to review his syllabus carefully. The workload is manageable with consistent effort. You shouldn't worry since you have an opportunity to drop the 4 lowest assignment grades and 1 quiz. I enjoyed his practical class.
This has to be the worst professor I have ever had. Extremely disorganized. Gives no instruction. Content just thrown on Canvas w/no directions. Wastes your time with irrelevant weekly discussions and an unreasonable amount of homework/test questions. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
Professor Kia's MATH10 class is well-structured, with helpful lectures and clear expectations. The workload is manageable with consistent effort. unstuckstudy ai and the practice tests were great study aids. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Professor uses Pearson for homework modules; homework consistently asks questions that have not been taught yet in class.
dont take him bro, trust
had the absolute worst experience with Kia. asked him for help and he told me to sit down so i asked a neighbor for help. came up to us screaming "YOU CANT SIT HERE" literally making me cry and continued to have students stand up and point at me when asked "who ruined my day today." don't listen to the good reviews he's insane. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!
HE DELETES REVIEWS. worst prof i've had (i've taken classes at 5 diff community colleges). DO NOT TAKE. participation based on "how he feels". rude to DSPS kids. uses pearson. during exam review once he couldn't solve one of his own problems from the study guide. class of 40+ dropped down to 20 by the end. take literally anyone else.
This math class was such a great experience! I loved how much we got to work in groups. It really helped me understand the material better because sometimes. Plus, it felt amazing when we finally figured out tough problems as a team. Professor Kia was really supportive, and I actually started to enjoy math more because of it!
This math class was fantastic! The group work made learning fun and engaging. Collaborating with classmates made me comfortable asking questions and feeling less anxious. I'd highly recommend this class to anyone!
Honestly speaking, I felt motivated and engaged. I enjoyed the course, and I wish more classes had a structure like this. The homework and reviews were incredibly helpful for the exams, and we were allowed a cheat sheet to help with extra information we might have needed. 9/10!!
For an 8-week course, I genuinely appreciate how the class was structured, I learned so much in this class and enjoyed it a lot. I was very motivated by the fast-paced nature of this class and thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall great job Professor!!
The class was pretty hard and there were a lot of assignments. The professor is really nice, though. He uses Pearson, which I didn't like at first but it's okay once you get used to i. I missed an assignment in the first week, but I explained the situation to him politely and he was very understanding. Just don't take advantage of his kindness.
I think this was a good math class to get back into the groove of school. The announcements and clear expectations were enough to keep me involved and motivated during the course. The fact that they were extra credit kept me motivated to finish them even if I thought I was ready for the test, which has helped my grades tremendously.
Not a good way to start college, unrealistic amounts of homework expected to be done by a student who is possibly doing a promise program oriented schedule with three other classes going on. Rambling far too much about his distain for certain people rather than properly letting people work while he guides them through the steps. Do not take…
I was able to pass with a good grade but I promise you it's not worth your effort, you could finish a math credit without take a class with Shafe because the program he uses, Pearson, is expensive and time consuming, as the others said, look at how many dislikes his "good" reviews receive and you'll understand what you're getting yourself into!
idek how i passed this hard class but kia is a cool guy
Kia is extremely disrespectful towards his students. He has ZERO patience for everyone and also gets comfortable wayyy too fast. In my class, he made inappropriate jokes to a student and called her "Regina George". When his students ask questions, he gets frustrated very easily, like he expects his students to know everything.
Don't listen to the class description. You won't do what it says, rather this website StatCrunch which doesn't even teach you Stats. You don't even learn Stats at all, I haven't learned a single thing about Stats this whole time. The cherry on top with the normal 30-problem HW with 10 subquestions PER QUESTION! It's a waste of your time with him.
worst teacher I have ever had ,not even exaggerating. There is so much homework for so little points it's exhausting and time wasting. He also does not care about your grade he rather fail you than help you out. I would contact him various times for help and to summarize his responses it was always “figure it out your on your own” responses.
A very humorous and nice professor. The course is a bit challenging and involves quite a few quizzes and exams. But Kia is very professional and explains the key points clearly and understandably. Before each exam, he also distributes a review sheet. There are also easily obtainable extra credits. Anyway. Kia is a cool guy! Choose him!
I took an 8-week math 2 course online with him last semester. he is incredibly fair with his grading, and quite gracious with his extra credit. If you take this class, do ALL of it you can. he provides plenty of lecture materials. Exams are difficult and quite long, but well-applied. make sure you study and don't skip out on lectures. no late work.
I hate this person这个人每天给的作业非常多 我在中国是数学天才
Failed cause I suck at math. If your feelings get easily hurt don't take him. Personally me? Loved his energy. Class flew by every day because he was always teaching relevant topics and was extremely passionate. Work groups were fun, solving problems were fun. Your either going to love it or hate it and he's not going to care either way lol
One of my favorite professors at saddleback. His classes were always funny and engaging. Although it is a lot of work, he gives a lot of extra credit. He is super nice and will go in depth if you have any questions. I loved his class and would highly recommend it.
I took this class as a summer course and was pretty worried prior to taking it. The class itself was hard (maybe js for me as math is a difficult subject), but Professor Shafe himself was so kind and quick to respond! Any questions you may have, ask him!! He is there and happy to help u
Great professor. His teaching style is interactive; you work out math problems with your peers at the board, which really helped me understand the concepts. He is also hilarious, and his lectures are never boring. The class is long, but he gives a 15-minute break halfway through. He holds extra tutoring sessions after class (sometimes with pizza).
It's college so show up, do the work, and put in the time outside of class. If you are a sensitive person, to bad cupcake, the world isn't sunshine and rainbows. He explains everything well and uses color markers for the visual learners. Study groups are very helpful. HW is not graded but useful! Test Qs are usually found in notes or worksheets!
Not only is he funny he cares. If you do your work and pay attention it's an easy pass.
his class was honestly hard as you do everything on your own. during lectures he doesn't mention much about what's on the homework or teaches them so it gets really difficult and sometimes hard to understand. I had to mostly rely on google since even statcrunch can't even help you with learning how to find answers and understand material.
He is very entertaining but this class is very difficult because Kia doesn't teach what we need to be taught. You don't learn stats you learn STATCRUNCH. Some of the homework questions have 13 parts per one question. The reviews take HOURS if you don't cheat. Everyday we do notes and have homework assignments all due on Sunday night. Hard to pass.
