Good teacher and no hw, if you take him go to tutoring he adds points
Worst teacher I ever had, jerk, failed half the students, paranoid, NO english
No Comments
He's hard but he backs that up with great lectures and great teaching. If you follow everything in class and understands what he teaches, his exams shouldn't be too hard
Horrible man! Doesn't speak english, rude, mean, egotistical, 7% passing average, failed students when he forgot to drop them.
Mean spritied egotistical man, out to fail everyone, unclear, thick accent.
be careful if he does not like u, he does not help u, especially men. if u like a challenge take his class.
Kaviana's class is not easy class, but he makes students to work hard. Once you have "A", you will be able to get involoved in business. In other world, you can apply mathmatic theory which you have learned to business concept.
He's out to prove a point-don't take him if you can help it.
this professor teaches at usc. he still thinks he is teaching usc students at smc. very hard. doesnt help at all. very egotistical. do not take him.
I hated this guy. He was so abrasive to the students. He went out of his way to embarrass one student who needed to take a test in the Disabled Students' Centre. Worst of all, he thinks all his students are Mathematics majors, doing their PhDs!
His lectures were very clear, however his tests were very difficult and are difficult to pass. Problems on the tests are very different from the one he makes you study. Better to not take him, a C the best grade you can have.
Great teacher, explains all the material till all students understand. test are fairly easy if you do hw. fair grader.
Very hard. You have to study very hard. But really hot! Unless you are a genius be prepared to get at maximum a C.The most attractive math teacher I have ever had.
goes through material as if we already know it. tests are veryy hard. one problem takes like 30 minutes to solve. bad teacher, who gives hard tests. bad combo.
his tests are nothing like the homework he assigns. he is an intelligent man w/ very poor communication skills. i passed calculus at the UC level w/ a B+. I could barely keep up with this guy's horrible english and un organized lecture.
Can;t understand **** his saying, very hard on grading and tests are hard.
Extremely hard to understand a word coming from his mouth!! Tests are so difficult. Does not involve class in discussions. Tells you on the first day of class that his math classes have a 33% passin rate! What teacher says that 66%of you will fail?
Too strong of an accent. And cannot believe someone actually thought he is hot! LOL. terrible teacher. Absolutely do not take his class!
I'd rather contract gonorrhea than take this creep again. He is ****, rude, abrupt, unclear, uninteresting, uninspiring, and he also can't teach. Steer clear of him like the plague. I am giving you the best advice you will receive in your four years of university.
worst teacher ive ever had in my life! traumatized me with calculus! he put my confidence down. i hated his class
HARD HARD HARD class. You must be a good math student to survive. You are basically on your own in his class. He even mentions that, "the majority of you will not pass my class". Good Luck. I don't recommend this teacher, if you can, get another.
make the class harder than it's..... don't take it w/him you will get F maybe D+ if you study hard.

Well I've been in th eclass for a little bit, but even though I came late, he didnt inspire me or help. He even gave me a wrong add code, and promised to email me one again, well...he forgot again! I dont recommend him, he sounds hard.VERY boring too. My honest opinion.
With the way this **** teaches, you can't follow along or teach yourself if you wanted to. He doesn't make sence and gets fustrated when students ask him questions. Horrible language barrier. Skips important stepS. Unless you are retaking a course and you know the material already, DO NOT ENROLL!
Very good professor for student wishing to understand Calculus. He is not esay but he is fair. If you need Calculus as prerequisite for other subject, take this guy. Very knowledgable and organized. I recommend him to every studnet who wants to understand Calculus.
I don't have a problem taking a hard test as long as i can prepare for it. But his tests are so much harder than the review, like he wants us to fail. All problems on tests would be something u never seen..no...not related to the HW or review. this is just one problem. ....just don;t take him.
Do the work, get the grade. Fair, clear, uncompromissing.
very clear, very understanding. it's not the easiest math class, but not the hardest. he really wants to help you and gives you a lot of tips towards exams. especially in final exam!! i recommend him if you want to take calculs
There are much better choices than this prof. So many problems too litle space. so just trust most of the ratings and don't take him.
i just read a lot of comments which is NOT right. i am taking his class right now. NO he doesn't get frustrated when you ask him questions and NO his tests are okey, not very difficult even if you understand the material in class. He's very knowledgeable. Yes, he takes attendance quite seriously and yes you have to do the work to earn the grade
He's a good teacher and enjoys teaching this class; his accent takes a little getting used to. Do the homework a couple days before the test and study. You'll do fine. You end up learning more about the business world than calc and his anecdotes make the class go faster and more enjoyable.
His examples are unorganized. He's accent is difficult to understand. He has no patience for working students (not the professor for you if you are employed). No patience for students that don't understand his way of teaching (not the professor for you if you learned anything from another class). Take Green, T. for math instead.
OMG his still teaching...? i gave 1 1 1 not only becuase i hate him but he truely deserves it. Class is hard since its calc...but he makes it worth with his accent, grading and useless boring lectures. bring a pillow and another one for ur pillow. If u need to keep a high GPA..take some one else and becareful. All smc math PRof. are HARD.
omg this man traumatized me! he made me fear calculus all throughout my life! this teacher is the far worst teacher ive ever had! hes very arrogant when he teaches and doesnt care if the student learns the material or not! i think he savors to fail students! he made me prejudice against persian teachers! i hate him that much!
i hated his class with a passion
Heis really helpful. He is themost helpful teacher I ve ever seen.He teaches well and I enjoy his class. His examples make it easier to understand.Just do what he tells you.You ll get an A
To compare with other's Math 23 teachers, he is easy. Trust me! He is polite and well knowledgeable. I do not blame him that I cannot get A so far because everybody knows Calculus is another language from out of space. Be careful of his reveiew before the exam because it is similar and then you will get better. BTW, he is an attractive guy.
you wont get an A in this class unless you are that one person. my class started wth 42 kids and there werent even enough chairs and now theres 20 left but calculus is hard period. its not supposed to be an easy class and kaviani is a really nice guy. he talks to his students about interests and its a 5 unit class, what can u expect?
Best math teacher so far..pretty straight forward, gives you sample test that r similar with the actual test, just come to class everytime, listen n take notes, practice on the sample test then you'll be fine
Even though I did well in his class, I don't think that he is a good professor and I will tell you why. 1. He has favoritism in class. 2. He is a person who believes that he does not make mistakes and if he does, it is the student's fault. 3. If you aren't going to USC, he will make you feel bad and not smart. So, he has not my respect. He is an AH
Math is hard. His test is hard. But so is life. He's very helpful, but students have to learn to ask him question if they are not understanding something. Make use of his office hours, he'll be glad to help you. You can't expect to get in his class and just cruise. You have to work hard on it. Students need to stop complaining and start studying.
OMG...WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!he doesn't know how to teach at all...doesn't help you if he doesn't like u....hard exams and very unclear notes in unreadable hand writing!DO NOT take this class unless you already knew everything in cal!WORST!!!
He is a very tough Prof, but his class is very practical. If you plan to move transfer to a UC or to USC you will need to take a class like his in order to prepare yourself for the rigid upper division courses you will face. He will have you prepared.
He is organized, very smart and knows his stuff very well. He gives very good practical examples for the use of calculus in business. How do you account for the fact that most of his students do well in the following math classes? So guys be more fair and do your share of studying before blaming such an intelligent professor for your laziness !
He is a good teacher. The material is hard. You need to pay attention and if you dont understand ask him. Use his office hours, he likes seeing his students putting work. If you dont do the HW, you lose on the test. Test are intense. If you want an easy pass dont take this class @ SMC, go to WLAC. This was my 2nd try with him and I had to drop.
Definitely a genious. He is a great teacher that will help you and put in extra time for you, especially if he see's that you are making the effort. This class is time consuming, but will improve all components of your math. Keep with it, and the results will definitely be worth it. I'm glad I didn't drop this class.
Straight forward teacher with a sense of humor. Practice makes perfect in this class
Fairly difficult class, considering it was over-enrolled in the beginning and now about 30% full. Prof has a thick persian accent that takes some getting used to. Prizes star students, shuns poor performers. But will definitely put in the time to help you if you show up to office hours. Likes basketball and anything about East Asia. Lots of HW.
The accent is thick. The homework load is pretty heavy, but it's not graded. If he assigns 100 problems and you turn in 100, you get 100% . I show up because attendance is part of the grade. The class really doesn't help me. My grades only show up when I started using the open MIT course available on I-tunes and "Calculus for Dummies."
Standard, run of the mill, professor who finds it more important to show off his knowledge than teach the class. The only problem is, even HE CAN'T SOLVE HIS OWN PROBLEMS! This guy writes sloppy, teaches way over everyone's head, and repeatedly comments on how his SMC job is "part time"...which is self evident in his lectures. DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
He is an excellent instructor, excellent math professor. He indeed pushes you to your limits in math. He is extremely fair in grading, gives partial credits on exam, attendance is mandatory, home work is fair, exams are hard (especially Exams ## 2, 3, and 5. Final is OK. I definitely recommend him, but be prepared to work hard(!!!), very hard!!!!!!

Class is hard.Gives partial credit on both tests and hw.Hw is due on every test date, stapled.Attendance is mandatory or he will drop you.Towards the end of the class he loosens up and talks more about how this math relates to real life.Lectures are straightforward and provide much harder examples than what will be seen on test.Final is easy
Got a B only because I took this class before and got a D, so was familiar with all concepts. Thick accent, fast pace, answer questions with tone to make you feel dumb. (half the time). Attendance Mandatory. Tells u what type of problems and how many before each test, so go to review class! TO pass, you need to be very familiar with concepts on own
To those taking Kaviani or considering taking him; ask yourself why you would want a B when you can get an A with the same amount of work you put in for a different professor. Take the challenge or the grade you are willing to accept from compromise.
Take this professor only if you are familiar with the materials. He is fast paced, gives out hard exams, very old school. Not to mention, he has a thick accent. Oh and when you ask questions be prepared to be ridiculed. Other than that good professor overall.
kaviani is my fav professor! yes his tests are ridiculously hard but its doable cos he gives a great review and explains exactly what the test will be like. he seems harsh at first but loosens up after only the serious students are left.
Excellent Professor but he doesn't like lazy student who doesn't do homework or study for exams. His explanation is crystal clear and always helpful. Truly passionate to teach. It was my last class before I got transferred to 4 year univ. He game me a solid foundation for business math. Don't take him if you are not serious student.
he is a very good professor and is extremely smart. he loves to teach the job he does and loves to teach students, especially at a community college, "i can change the lives of students." He does give out really hard tests, but he does teach the material that he will be testing you on. Take this professor, he will make you like math!
The worse teacher that I've ever had.I hate him.he has mental problem. You can't get even c.I am A student ,but get C hardly in his class.
Great professor, as long as you attend class and pay attention you may be alright in his class. His tests are extremely hard. He gives a lot of homework but it is fairly easy, just do it all cause it can cost useful points. HW isn't helpful for the test, just study over what he reviews
Old School Teacher. Grades hard and appreciates students who work hard. Very hard class, I would recommend other options before choosing this professor. More than half of the class failed the first few tests. I liked the class but I could have gotten a better grade elsewhere.
It is because of professors like Mr. Kaviani that I have come to respect and appreciate SMC significantly more. Great professors= Great Schools= Great students!!!
This man is a genius among average minds. It is quite amazing to watch. The tests are outrageously hard, but at the beginning of the class, he says that he prepares students for the best business schools in the country. This guy is a true example of why SMC breeds the best transfer students at the top institutions.
His lectures are fast paced and confusing. Leaves a lot of homework and offers little credit for it. 4 tests will determine your grade. Before each tests he will give you an exact replica of the test with different problems. The key to getting a good grade is to focus your energy on those test reviews. Also, expect to study on your own.
Prof. Kaviani is amazing! One of the best math prof I've had. The negative comments are probably from the students who dropped after the first test. He's extremely helpful and cares about his SERIOUS students. Three tests and a final. He averaged all our tests. If you study you should do well. I received an A and I will be taking him for Math28.
Nice guy, but his class is ridiculously hard. He teaches it at an UC level & attendance is mandatory. Blows through chapters and gets mad at you when you tell him to slow down. I would only take him if you're really solid on Precalc
He's a nice guy, but his class is ridiculously hard. He teaches at a UC level so if you're not solid on your math, especially precalc, don't even take him because he will expect you to know your math. Attendance is mandatory, tests get easier towards the end of the semester.
Professor Kaviani is an amazing person really smart and he cares a lot about students who work hard. His class is hard like any other math but his explanations are clear. Most of the students left after first exam so I guess that's where the bad reviews come from. If you work hard he will help you.
Prof. Kaviani is NOT an easy professor, however he will make you better at Math and prepare you for Math 28 and 29. He rewards students who work hard. Highly recommended!
Well let me just start with, stay away from this professor! Hard class, no book use, test review no help. Nice guy, who cares as a teacher not good at all. If you put effort in this class lucky if you get B or C. Not everyone has all the time in the world to study to be class pet like review s below... Take other teacher will get A with same effort
It's been 10 years since I took Math 23, now Math 28 and he still haunts me. I took up to Math 29 and got straight A's for math but had to repeat Math 23 (28) when I took it with Kaviani. I have my BS in Accounting and to this day would still never take his class again. He tears you down and only talks about his 4.0 GPA in Iran.
Guys this is math 28. It is a hard class. Do not expect he will baby sit you for the lectures. Do your homework and go to his office hour if you have questions. Study hard ! He is a fair grader. He provides an example test a lecture before the exam. COPY DOWN EVERY QUESTION HE GOES THROUGH ! His class is university-level.
i recommend taking his class if you are willing to work HARD. I first too hated this guy because i got D on my first test, and when i went up to him to get help, he was so rude and arrogant. However i kept asking help from him during office hours and he changed and started to help me immensely. I got A in this class. Take him but try your best!
practice each problem on his notes more than 3 times. he has a review session before each test and final he tells you whats gonna be on the test,so make sure to attend one class before test and final exam. class time is unfortunately very short, therefore practice makes you fast and you can manage time easily. 5 to 10 points extra credit on tests.
WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN! DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF!
i know math class is hard especially this level (math 28). but he helped all his student and his lectures are very clear. i got bad score on one of my tests but he helped me so i can get an A. he's really helpful. go to his office hour for help and you will pass this class
Take this guy if you love math, if not you will hate your life and probably fail. Makes test reviews seem so easy and then when you take the exam it is 20x harder. Doesn't respond to emails. Really tough class, I would stay away from this guy.
The homework in the book is ten times easier than his test. His tests are literally impossible. Almost whole class failed his first test and one third passed his second test. The questions are very difficult and long to complete. Huge mistake to take his class. Don't take this professor!
Kaviani is fair. Yes, he assigns a mountain of homework, but the way you succeed is through time management - you have to start as soon as he assigns it (he gives you a month) and calculate how much you complete each day. He doesn't deal with BS. He is a professional and enjoys teaching math, and is respectful of students. He made math fun for me.
Getting an A or B is not hard to get in his class. You must practice his lecture notes a lot. He has exam review session before each exam and final. Make sure to be in his review session. He counts HW for how many problmes you did not for how many correct answer you have. Its not an easy A but getting an A is not impossible.
there is a lot of information to go over, but he does a really good job lecturing. It is a 2.5 hour class so you have to do the homework and pay attention. He will review every question on the test the class before, and the later tests have extra credit. The final is definitely challenging and it's so hard to get an A. But you learn a lot.
He didn't grade 1 part of the extra credit for my test and when I asked him about it, he refused to grade it because it was "extra credit". My efforts were in vain. He is difficult to understand sometimes, has a strong accent, messy handwriting, and teaches too fast. His tests were SO difficult! The textbook was a lot easier. HE HAS NO SYMPATHY!!!!
Dr. Kaviani is very intelligent and knows his stuff. If you want to learn from the best, take his class. It's a lot of work and the material is not easy, but it is realistic to get an A. Personally, I was never good with math and graduated from high school over 10 years ago, and still got an A. If I could do it, so can you.
Professor Kaviani gives a lot of homework despite it being a very minor fraction of your grade. He also gives out 5 tests which pretty much make up your entire grade. So you better make sure you study. I studied and it paid off for me so don't go blaming the teacher for your own failures. Just grind and study hard. It will pay off in the end.
Youll dislike him at first. But as long as you do the hw, study class examples, and ask questions during office hrs or email, youll be fine. YOUTUBE also helped me a lot. And FIND a study group!! Youll thank me later! I passed with a C, but looking back, if I had done all these tips from day 1, I wouldve done better. Trust me! Good luck!
Makes mistakes from his own problem often, test is very hard compared to lecture and homework bad pronounciation and handwriting, I dont see any passion or willing to teach from him.
