Really really bad. Idk if it's because of the online setting but he's so low energy and none of his explanations make sense. Do not take his classes, especially for higher-level math. I had to basically teach myself all of it.
During class, Professor Nguyen does a lot of practice problems instead of explaining actual concepts in class because he assumes you've watched the supplementary video lectures already. I like this format and I feel he does a good job at explaining the practice problems. For online learning, I'd recommend him, but for in person, I'm not so sure
MATH331 is not a hard class. Kien though unfortunately gets overshadowed by Garret Cahill who's the star of the show. If you take Kien, though, know he's a really caring guy. He gave me an extension after I completely misread the instructions. Come to class as he gives hints to written homework problems. His Viet accent may be harder to understand.
Kien is very smart but doesn't explain concepts well, moves through the content too quickly and the examples he gives in class are no help when going back to review notes. If you don't have a strong background in calc1&2, I would definitely not recommend this professor. He's a nice guy and wants to be a good teacher but just isn't :/
Understanding about the individual situations students are in. Knows his stuff, and can draw really well which is kind of necessary in multivariate calculus. If you ask questions he will answer them until you either completely hold the class up or you gain a complete understanding. Open response HWs are hard, standard for H designated math classes.
Clearly a very smart person and is an expert in his field. He is also very nice and accommodating to your needs (disability etc). However, he is THE WORST at teaching. When we were preparing for finals there were many topics which weren't covered he just crammed it into the last day. Gives poor explanations and doesn't respond to emails.
Go to class! I missed a couple of classes because I was sick and had trouble understanding the rest of the unit. If you have any questions in class make sure to ask as he always makes sure to answer them so you understand. Textbook is provided online . I thought I had no chance of getting an A but the final was take-home so I was able to clutch it.
I am surprised at bad reviews, maybe I am a minority but I thought he was a solid professor, and he was pretty responsive to emails. TLDR: it can be hard to understand him as his English isn't the best, but the man DOES care. Also, grade cutoff for an A is 90, which is extremely generous imo bc the content was very hard.
He can only read the slides. The examples showed in class are useless. The homework is super difficult. The exam questions are not shown before.
lectures were totally disorganized. i got a 30 on my first exam (i had a family death first week of school and asked him for help, he said his notes were too messy to help me) and when i told him i might withdraw because the class was too hard, he said "well you know this class takes a lot of effort. are you sure you're putting enough time in?"
His explanations often made very little sense and his class wasn't organized very well.
Kien is an alright professor. His lectures are a bit dry and he tends to teach more formally rather than intuitively. He always responds to email with a very thorough explanation for your questions.
Absolutely. Awful. Slides were not helpful at all. He gave no examples on how to approach or solve high level mathematics, just generalized formulas, and arbitrary lemmas. There was no supplementary text, which would have helped tremendously. I learned more from Google and YouTube than I did in class.
Very knowledgeable and nice, but his lectures are long and aren't helpful in the slightest. The slides he posts online do not contain the math that goes with the examples, making them useless. The weekly quizzes are completely boom or bust, and the course schedule and the broken grading system are ridiculous. Would not recommend.
He is a kind person, but that's about as far as it goes. This class is an extreme bore and it's very difficult to pay attention to the lectures. You get a cheat sheet for the exams and quizzes but that doesn't mean much if the material is difficult anyways. There are two different locations for grades and both are vastly different. DON'T TAKE STATS
Everything was so unclear. His slides made no sense, and the homework didn't line up at all. The grading system is awful, we didn't know our grades at all, and he never attempted to fix this. Never discussed any of the tests. Homework and exams are confusing, time-consuming and basically impossible. Cumulative final covers 24 units. DON'T TAKE
Don't take this class. Just don't! Yes, he's nice, but it's really hard to understand the material he's teaching. He just goes through the slides really quickly and speeds through the topics. Also, the grading is confusing and miscalculated too because he uses two platforms.
Professor Nguyen is a nice person, but Stats 111 was definitely a challenging course. To start off, the slides aren't posted, and the content in the lectures wasn't explained well at all. We were also kind of expected to know some of the stuff, even though it was an introductory course. Grading was also just confusing since there are two platforms.
He is very nice. But his class is definitely challenging. HW is pretty hard because it has topics that he never went over lol, but at least you could check your answers. Exams are only 10 multiple questions and they're all from your hw as well. But do not take his class if you don't have a good foundation to begin with.
Prof Nguyen is a kind person but not a good teacher. Syllabus was very unclear. Lectures were extremely boring and unappealing. Had to purchase access to an online textbook and homework. Tests are online which have very few questions (& bad class averages). Nguyen was unreachable outside of class & didn't help if you had questions in/after class.
I'm sure that Professor Nguyen is a really nice guy, but he was a HORRIBLE professor. He is really hard to understand in lectures, and the slides he teaches from are inconsistent and don't make any sense at all, so there really isn't any good way to learn the material. He also provides no study guides/materials beyond homework.
If you are not a math person and need to get both your R1 and R2 requrements done then take this class. He is hard to understand, but he posts lecture slides before class so it is easy to follow. Attendance is not manditory and if you just copy the slides into your notes you dont really have to go. 4 exams and drops lowest grade and weekly quizzes
Prof Nguyen is a nice guy and very understanding, but his lectures kinda suck. I like stats, but he makes it really boring and difficult to understand. If I hadn't already learned a bit of stats before taking his class, I would've struggled hard.
His slides are confusing and he doesn't elaborate on hoe to do things, only reads the slides. The discussion portion helped a lot, lectures not necessary to go to since he doesn't teach much. The work is not that much but can be very confusing because of the way he teaches. He also can be hard to understand.
He seems like a very nice guy but the way he teaches is somewhat confusing. He just reads off slides without offering any more explanation. Without the discussion sections I would be completely lost, but even with them it is an incredibly challenging class. Wouldn't recommend as a beginner.
This is one of the most interesting classes I've taken, and Professor Nguyen clearly enjoys teaching it. The homework assignments can be quite long and difficult, and also the exams are hard. Nguyen is very understanding and accommodating to extenuating circumstances.
very bad at explaining the content literally just reads whats on his slides so attending the lectures isnt important if you read and take notes on the slides. Discussion sections are your only change to actually learn. Overall as an introductory class it was awful. Without having prior stats knowledge this would be nearly impossible to pass.
This is just another hoop you have to jump through and this class is beyond annoying/boring. I would rather read the same magazine everyday for a year than go to this class. You don't need to attend class as it is a waste of time. Just read the material or skim it and do the online HW, go to the discussion groups and take the exams.
Lectures were him reading off of slides, which were posted on Canvas. Slides were often confusing and contained extra stuff that was not necessary. Just go to the discussion section and do the weekly homework assignments to prepare for the quizzes/exams.
Im barely into this course, and the professor is confusing. His lectures make no sense, he reads straight from the slides, and his examples are unclear. He sends late emails with crucial information, assigns homework over the weekend, and doesn't post slides before class, making it hard to keep up. Honestly, I wouldnt recommend this course with him
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. He reads straight from slides, has confusing examples, and assigns homework that is beyond confusing because he doesn't explain how to complete it in class. Quizzes every week in discussion sections over material that hasn't been explained well.
Professor lectures mindlessly 2x a week while the only chance to actually learn comes in the weekly breakout sessions with his TA. All homework is completed through Cengage/Webassign, which needs paid access. I've left many comments on confusing homework questions to get zero reply. Also, good luck trying to understand a single word the guy says.
The worst professor I have ever had. He reads straight off the slides and I can barely understand what he is saying .The discussion portions are okay but don't go over all the material and there's a quiz each week. I recommend taking this course if you took stats in high school otherwise you are going to be confused. Just don't show up - self study
DO NOT take this class unless you did well in STATS in high school. He reads through the slides, goes through more than a unit in a class sometimes. I would not recommend it unless you're willing to grind super hard in the library. It's nearly impossible to succeed in this class if you do not make it your full priority which is dumb as it's intro
HES SO NICE BUT SO BAD AT TEACHING I GET MORE CONFUSED WHEN I LISTEN TO WHAT HES SAYING. HE DOES NOT TEACH!!! EVER!!! PLZ STOP READING OFF OF THE SLIDES THANK YOU
I'm in the class now and it's not good. Professor does not do anything but read off the slides and does not answer questions asked. I don't even go to the lectures anymore and just teach myself at this point. My TA is my only saving grace.
Listen to the other comments. His lectures are monotonous and unhelpful. Quiet voice that just reads off the slides. His examples are not helpful. My TA teaches better. Most of the learning you do is on your own time reading the textbook/doing hw or you have to self advocate. It's easy, but so annoying and boring.
Not great lectures and not great resources. Wouldn't recommend.
The lectures are challenging to understand and it is harder to understand the content due to this—no help outside of class either, minus the TA, who does a better job by far. Reads straight off the slides EVERY class and sometimes does multiple units in class. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU WANT TO PUT SO MANY HOURS INTO IT and still struggle.
Professors lectures were always bad. Students would ask questions and he just would not answer. He will go on one topic for the longest time disregarding the time to lecture about other things we need to learn. The TA's have no idea what they're doing half the time because there's typos in the homework and right answers do not work in cengage.
His lectures are not informational as he posts all of his slides. He is very hard to follow when he discusses chapters, there is a lot of homework and it is very difficult but if you keep up with notes (which I did not do and am paying the price for it) it should be much easier to keep up with. Good luck.
The professor is a very good guy, but he is so soft-spoken you can barely hear him. I stopped going to lectures because he just reads off the slides. The TAs are not helpful, and I am struggling in this class because I have literally taught myself everything... like actually everything. Actually save yourself this class is horrible
The class is challenging and lecture-heavy, requiring textbook reference for self-teaching, along with weekly homework and quizzes. Kien Nguyen is really helpful during office hours. He tends to read off the slides, so I recommend self-studying throughout the course; it may be tough, but it's the only thing that will get you through the class.
He is very difficult to understand, lectures don't give any good information and it is much easier to stay home and do the chapters on your own. If I stayed on top of my notes it would have been much easier, the later chapters are hell so good luck :D
Professor Nguyen is not good at his job, and he doesn't seem to mind this fact either. This class offers a value proposition most others don't - as it satisfies both the R1 and R2 requirement. Other than that, this class is pointless, and should be avoided. The class material isn't terribly difficult, but the professor's apathy is apparent.
Not worth it in my opinion. There are weekly quizzes, confusing lectures, and you're simply going to be lost the whole entire time. Attendance is not mandatory, and you're simply better off just learning everything on your own.
As a professor, he is not great. He speaks unclearly in a very quiet voice, his lectures aren't engaging, and he does not explain concepts well. I had to put in a lot of work outside of class and go to all discussion sections in order to understand the material. On the other hand, he's a decent guy and his grading policies are straightforward.
he does not teach, the TAs provide semi helpful notes, however, Kien likes to put stuff on exams that we have never seen before nor gone over. He says he drops lowest exam grades but in my experience he has not. If you are looking for a source of stress and utter aggravation, this is the class for you.
Do not take this class unless you want to worry constantly about your grade and that you are going to fail the midterms and the final. He does not teach, only looks at slides and does problems WRONG. WRONG, not correct. And then he also gets pressed when someone questions him or when people do not answer the questions. TAs are great tho!
very bad at teaching and confusing
I am literally on my first full week of classes and I am dreading this class. He reads what is on the lecture slides and ONLY what is visible, nothing further is said. I don't know when any of the exams are other than the final so I can't even schedule with DS. There is no agenda on his syllabus so good luck everyone!! :,)
Frustrating to learn from. Mumbles through his teaching, and his lectures feel like he's making up explanations on the spot. Unable to explain difficult concepts, and rarely is able to give an answer that actually answers the question asked. Unclear on what is tested on, and often puts things on the tests beyond the scope of lectures and HW.
most frustrating/difficult class of my entire college career tbh, he mumbles, doesn't do numerical examples, and doesn't really explain what he is doing or why, or how. The only grades are the webassign hws, quizzes (bad review sheets w no posted solutions) and one exam (i got a 66, genuinely couldn't answer the questions) basically learned nothing
Goes too fast in lectures. Doesn't do a good job teaching material
Worst professor ever. His slides are directly copied from the textbook and he reads right off of them. His words are unclear and when asked questions he doesn't respond helpfully. He's lazy and doesn't give back any grades on time. I only got my test 1 grade weeks after we had finished test 2. He is so boring and doesn't care about his students.
This professor was the worst teacher I have ever experienced. He overcomplicates things, lectures make no sense, his notes are terrible. Lectures do nothing, ChatGPT explains concepts to me.Exams are unfair and difficult, and despite what I am sure was a class exam average of below a 60, he does not curve the exams, offer practice exams/exam review.
This man is the antichrist. I've never had a professor quite like him. All he knows is evil. His favorite activity is making students suffer. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ): All it will give you is despair.
In my experience, I ended up deciding not to attend lectures within 2 weeks of taking this class because the slideshows were pretty much verbatim the textbook, and listening to the professor read off of the slides for over an hour seemed like an inefficient use of my time. With 1 remaining in-class exam and a final, I currently have an A-.
Terrible. Makes me wanna ju mp out 21st floor of Kennedy. Genuinely don't know what he ever is saying. The class is a joke. Not sure if he even knows how to do stats. U can still do like okay not attending lectures bc they are pointless anyway and ChatGPT everything but final is on paper. Goodluck everyone!!!!!
I aged 5 years in one semester and my GPA was roasted over a fire of broken dreams. You will leave with less of an understanding than coming into this course. He also likes to just not answer questions. There was no curve just a cliff, a steep, steep cliff. Every lecture felt like a ted talk given by someone who hates talking and people.
Do NOT take this class if you've never taken stats in high school. I came into this class with zero knowledge about stats, and I'm coming out of it with no improvement. I genuinely haven't learned a THING, despite going to each lecture. I am so lost and so screwed for the final.
This guy needs to be fired ASAP. If you are a university reading this, please do your students a favor and blacklist this guy. I even did good in the class and I'm still writing this review; he is incredibly “not-smart” and just straight up annoying to deal with.
Felt bad because he seems like a nice guy. The class was very fast and hard to keep up with. Quizzes and exams were taken on a website. Final was on paper. He used many examples to try and help with understanding, but didn't help much. Some content is common sense but the rest is hard to pick up on.
Possibly the worst professor I've had at UMass. Lectures were dense and he seemed to never be prepared or them-whenever someone would have a question he didn't know how to answer. Mostly stumbled through practice problems (if any at all) and never took the time to explain anything. Went so fast on half the content so I never truly learned it.
STATS 516 with Prof. Kien was a smooth and rewarding experience. Even though I took the course online, I learned a lot and really enjoyed it. Prof. Kien is very kind and always willing to help. I was surprised by RMP score, I would definitely recommend his class to someone willing to take a stat class
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS HE DOES NOT TEACH OR ANSWER QUESTIONS!!!
if you value your mental health don't take this class!!!!! it's all lecture which is fast and hard to follow and he discussion sections are no better. I should've dropped when I had the chance. he can't explain things well and tells you to ask a peer when you have a question
This man should be FIRED. I took statistics in high school, and it was nothing like this. His lectures do nothing, and his exams are worth a lot, so they will severely drop your grade if you do badly. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I wish this website had a 0 star option because he seriously deserves 0 stars. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The lectures are painfully bad and not a single person understands the material. He has a very thick accent that is hard to understand and the actual material is just flat out confusing. I have never skipped a lecture and I am SUFFERING.
DO NOT TAKE! I genuinely cry myself to sleep at night at the thought that I will most definitely fail this class. I'm a freshman who has never gotten anything below a C in my entire life. TS is so bad this man DOES NOT TEACH, and I can't understand a thing he is saying. ts has me feeling like such a failure. PLEASE LISTEN TO ME AND DROP TS
Took stats in high school and it was nothing like this. Explains things in a confusing and difficult way and the slides are not helpful. There is no textbook and the list of negatives just goes on. For the sake of your mental health, take another math class. Even calc is better than this.
Took stats in high school and it was nothing like this. He explains things in a confusing way, the TA isn't helpful at all (she told me she didn't know how to answer a question and said to look it up on ChatGPT), and deliberately chooses not to tell us the simplest way to get an answer. For the sake of your mental health, take calc.
This guy has me TWEAKING! To say the least, I will be failing this class. I took statistics in high school (literally less than a year ago) and this class is NOTHING like that. His accent already makes it difficult to understand him but when it's also alongside how off topic he gets from the slideshows...oh good luck. Seems like a nice guy though!
SAVE YOURSELF! This is genuinely the worst class i have ever taken. I have lost years of my life taking this class and I cry myself to sleep every day. Its NOTHING like any other stats class I have taken. He is impossible to understand and has the most dry lectures, he would verbally tell us how to do a super complicated formula. RUN WHILE YOU CAN
Absolutely terrible. Teaches in the most confusing way possible by going over simple things a million times while skimming through complex material. Do not take this class.
Had to start going to church because of this class….. also I started questioning if I even spoke English after attending his lectures
If you expect to pass this class, you have to make sure you have taken a prior Stats class and saved all your notes from it. The lectures make things more confusing and it's better to teach yourself. You get cheat sheets on tests but they dont teach you how to use your calculator to input information.
Literally don't even go to the lecture, as it's not worth it. I have been teaching the whole class to myself. I leave his lectures more confused than when I started walking in. Definitely make friends in the class because then you can all teach yourselves and take notes in the discussion section, because at least my TA taught it better than him.
After failing the first exam in class, I stopped attending. I decided I could teach myself better than he could. I got a B on the next exam. He had to curve our first exam 20% because everyone did so bad. His lectures make no sense. Office hours were useless. I would ask a question and his answer would only be more confusing. AVOID HIM
The class average for the first exam was near a 40, which explains this course. If you want to pass make sure to teach yourself everything and get a therapist immediately. There are 4 exams that only get a curve if no one gets a 100 (don't let him fool you) AVOID THIS COURSE AND THAT MAN
All I wanna say is that I probably learned more from Chat, youtube, and trying to figure out homeworks than what I actually learned in class
AWFUL. AWFUL. AWFUL. Do NOTTT take it if you can help it, and if you need to take stats, don't take it with this teacher. He doesn't know how to teach. He has an accent and mumbles, and it sounds like he has an excess of saliva in his mouth, so you can't understand a word he says in person or on Echo360. Just pray you pass. not much else you can do
gave me the mindset of "if i fail this class i'll dropout of college" and i'm a freshman. i'm just hoping i'll pass it. 0/10
I didn't think Nguyen was that bad. Some of the lectures later on in the semester I kinda just sat through and gave up trying to understand. Youtube videos on theories and methods helped me a lot. He's a nice guy who is sometimes funny.
He teaches nothing that is relevant to the exams. Don't bother going to lecture. You have to use outside sources to understand class material.
He sucks, Ive never had such a bad teacher. I went into this class not knowing anything about stats, and left even more confused than I went in. I've never experienced such a bad teacher. i honestly feel bad for anyone required to take this class. Genuinely think the school needs to fire him, or move him to a smaller class size.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN HELP IT. If you want to teach yourself the entirety of stats then go ahead but you will be teaching yourself. Exams aren't terrible if you use practice exams to your advantage. Professor is very nice but does not lecture in a beneficial way especially in a 300 person class. This class was way to hard for a gen ed.
Terrible NEVER TAKE DO CALC INSTEAD
He sucks, I've had to teach myself stats this whole semester and still don't know what I am doing.
He moves really fast and doesn't explain what variables mean. He is soft spoken and is very bad at answering questions. He's open to them, but nothing he says make sense. You have to pay $100 for Cengage to do your homework. You have to really teach yourself all the material, but once you know all the calculator hacks it'll be okay.
Kien seems like a really nice guy, but he is really not a good professor. I attended every lecture, he was hard to follow, and didn't teach me anything. Before every exam, I would teach myself everything using ChatGPT. I studied hours on end for every exam, and it honestly takes a toll on you. Don't take this class if you don't have to. Good luck
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you think you're good at stats, you're not. The way he teaches is genuinely so incomprehensible you'd be better off learning the material from a toddler. He only started giving practice exams after we all bombed the first midterm. Yes, that's right, FIRST midterm. There are 4. He's sweet, but a god awful teacher.
Stopped going to lecture after the first month because I realized it was a waste of time. He is a bad teacher and explains things in the most confusing way possible - I taught myself everything outside of class by watching youtube videos that explained everything so easily. I have an A in the class, but only because the exams are multiple choice.
I feel like he does it for the bit
if you have any dignity or will to live don't take this class.
If you care about your mental health, do not take this course. His lectures will only make you more confused, and you will have to teach yourself the entire course.
This is a *** professor with poor lecture skills, bad teaching techniques, and lack of explanation skills. He often got stuck on the examples he provide in class and waste a lot of time and seemed to be fully unprepared for the lectures. He also offer unorganized works including works only visible on GradeScope---he didn't even post on Canvas
literally had to buy a cake to celebrate that i had passed this class. do not take this class. also the syllabus states that the lowest midterm score is dropped but mine never was.
The class material is easy if you're coming in with basic knowledge of stats. he's such a kind person, but lectures can be confusing at times because he doesn't tend to explain the 'why' behind most of the formulas. be prepared to self-study.
I dont know how much i can stress how kien is the worst professor I have ever had. All he does is mumble , rea through slides super fast and doesnt pay attention to people raising their hands in class for questions. There are quizzes at the end of every class and 4 mid terms. People usually fail the last one. His grading makes no sense at all.
