Super good teacher. The class is basically like almost any other average class in terms of difficulty and you need to show up to class on a regular basis in order to pass but an overall great teacher. Gives super good feedback and is extremely helpful. Put in some effort and its definitely do-able.
Not very satisfied with my english skills. I was confused on what to do for most of my essays. The professor woul not give me much feedback for my drafts. I had to do a lot of outside research just to understand what this professor was talking about. Otherwise, I would have not passed this class. I think the professor could have done a lot better.
This professor does not clearly explain what she wants on the essays and when the class would question things, she would just get more confusing. She doesn't give good feed back and it's almost like her way is the bestonly way. I do well on essays and I have never gotten a low grade on a paper until this class. I don't recommend this professor.
Squires is a seemingly nice prof, but give her a chance and she'll stab you in the back. Lots of reading and over analyzing EVERYTHING and if you have to drop your brothers off school and end up a few mins late occasionally she'll drop your grade a whole letter. Do not recommend. Would not take again
Do NOT take. Shes a nice person overall but NOT a good teacher. You can expect at least a page of writing a night, if not more. Grades insanely difficult, I found myself spending almost 4 hours a night working on 3 page assignments she assigns right before class ends expecting you to have it done ready for class the next day. Once again, DONT TAKE!
Horrible. Shes very sarcastic, and grades very very difficult. I have got nothing but A's in all my English classes except hers, which i got a C-. Expect at least an hour of work a night. I would heavily recommend to not take her. Don't risk it, find another English teacher to go with, unless you are fine with a C and hours of homework.
She takes too long to grade homework. She comes out with unexpected tests or essay prompts and expects you to know it.
she's teaching English 099 and she is very though even if you do well on your assignments and even you get perfect of your essays but the final essay if you failed you automatic failed the class.
After looking what other people have said about Kiera I thought I'd weigh in. Her class isn't impossible. Yes, you have to work for your grade but guess what, it's college. She's always happy to answer any questions you have & if you don't understand something, she'll keep teaching until you understand. I enjoyed her class & I'd take her again.
Very good teacher. Clearly states what she expects on the essays and even though they are frequent they aren't the hardest thing in the world. Makes sure to answer any questions you have. I'm going to take her again for 102.
If you're an Honors English student who would like to be made to feel like you should be enrolled in an ESL course, enjoy. Awful. She's a new professor and it shows. Chip on her shoulder, rude remarks to students. Our class had less than 1/2 the original students at the end of it, I truly wish I had jumped ship early. Find another ENG101 prof.
If you need help, ASK HER, she'll tell you exactly what to write/what she wants, she gives AMAZING feedback. Likes her essays a certain way, using the techniques taught in class, so use them. Grading criteria is specific so follow it. Passed with a 3.8 using these tips. Not a lot of homework, but there's A LOT of essay work.
She will glady help and explain more if you ask for it! I think she's a good professor you just have to want to do good
I honestly struggled at the beginning of this course because she was a tough grader, but she explains what she expects in your paper clearly. She lectures through Powerpoints that she later uploads on Canvas. Definitely have to work very hard for a good grade in this class.
I am a grade A student, and strive for 4.0's in every subject. I can hardly manage a 70% in her class dedicating every waking moment to her assignments. she demands perfection and doesn't teach what she wants on her assignments specifically until she has already graded your paper. do not take her class. if you have to wait another quarter, do it.
A lot of people here say not to take her because she's a tough grader. But if you ask for help or for her to comment on your draft, she provides excellent feedback. She also describes exactly what she wants in the Syllabus and lectures.
She is super nice and helpful. If you're not good at essays I don't recommend her class. Once you get the hang of how she grades it gets easier. Her Harry Potter references are a cute touch to her lectures.
Super great teacher & super hot!
Highly enjoyed Ms. Squires class & hope that I get to take her for more literature classes in the future.
I enjoyed Ms Squires for English 99 and 101, would recommend her. She is a good teacher. I learned in 101 that if I ask for feedback she is happy to give it. She makes you work for your grade, but you learn a lot.
I've been a 3.8-4.0 student. However, in this class I could not earn anything above a C even after asking for feedback. She forbids a lot of essay topics simply because she finds them "boring". If you slack and you're not a GREAT writer, you'll struggle immensely. Wait another quarter if you have the chance...
Lots and lots of reading, even though you work on the feedback she gives you, still doesn't help your grade. No late homework at all. She will fail you in a second.
Contemplated dropping it a couple of times because of extremely low scores that I received on the first 2 papers. She gives you a chance to re-write your essay get an -A. Started going to her for help outside of class and grades immediately increased. Ended up getting a 100% on the final, she gives good feedback.
Horrible teacher. Annoyingly sercastic. As for the class it was okay. Unfortunately I did not pass because I had one paragraph of pledgerism on my last paper and she decided to drop my grade from a A+ to a F. She said she'd give me a chance to pass but that was not the case. OVER ONE PARAGRAPH just because I didn't put quotation marks on it.
You will exit this class a marginally better writer than you went in, and be much more stressed and anxious and confused when you come out. Just take someone else.
this class is stressful. i learned a lot about writing essays, but she was not fun. papers are very hard, but she does give you strict criteria so you know what to do. i failed my last major paper because i forgot to paraphrase something, so be very careful with that
She had very little instructions on how to set up your essays, and expects you to know the in and outs of how to do certain tasks without any instructions what so ever. Would definitely not take this professor again.
She expects you to have a full understanding of what she attempts at explaining in class. Her lectures are so confusing and give little to no help on what she assigns you to do. I would not recommend this professor to anyone wanting to take English 101.
Kiera is a young and RUDE teacher. Class was mandatory and a waste of time. Have fun trying to figure out what she actually wants in the writing assignments! I would NOT recommend this professor!!!
This is the worst professor I've ever taken. She doesn't give instructions AT ALL!! I'm preparing to get a BA in English and I've always been great in my English classes! I'm even writing novels outside of school hours! I've never had below a B in my life (in English)!
Better bring headphones, because she'll lecture for 5-10 minutes then make you sit in silence and work for the rest of class. Extremely tough grader and doesn't always explain what you need to do until after its graded. She expects you to come to her for questions, not in the general classroom setting so if you're shy wait until next quarter.
Kiera is very nice. Sometimes she drags her lectures out a bit too long, but she makes sure you know what you are doing. I think she grades certain things a bit unfairly, but that is my biased opinion. Not my first choice for an English teacher, but I would take her again. I received a 90% by the way.
This Professor was the best, she is so caring and kind. She will give you help, just ask, I was shy at first, but she goes around the room to help everyone! Plus you can write on whatever topic interests you. I don't see why she has so many bad reviews, take her, you will not regret! oh and no finals, only 4 essays, no book; save money!
She really is a great professor she gives you a ton of time to do your essays like two weeks! Like what kind of professor does that?! She is super nice I didn't get such a good grade in her class cause I slacked, but imagine if I didn't slack? I would have gotten a solid A
gave a lot of help with papers
She is super nice. However, her grading is not generous at all. Toughest grader i've ever had. Normally I am a 3.0 student, not here. She doesn't tell you what you did wrong until after she grades your essays.
Only take Ms. Squires if you are ready to work for a good grade, and talk to her outside of class. Participation and not procrastinating are key to being successful in her English class; that being said, I really enjoyed her! She gives you a lot of time to write the essays, and is very accessible.
I have never had such a bad grade in English. She is an unnecessarily though grader. Worst professor I've ever had. I definitely do not recommend. No one in the class likes her. Everyone automatically get a D in participation, you actually have to talk frequently and volunteer to read to get points, and even when you might not get full points.
she expects you to be polite but she is rude herself. she gets mad when you ask for help. instead of helping you, she will tell talk bad about your work rather than guiding you.
She's alright. Grades on sentence count and not word count which is great. She wouldn't be my first option but definitely not my last. DO NOT slack because you will get really really behind.
Squires is a tough grader and makes participation a major part of your grade. Her opinion is the only opinion that is right when it comes to essays, if given a topic she will only give you evidence that supports her opinion. Not enough evidence will be given to go against her claims so therefore your essays must be writen to agree with hers.
She isn't a good professor, she would give me feedback then deduct points for doing as she said - I don't recommend this professor and suggest taking a different one.
if you want your GPA to fall, take this professor. she is impossible to please and even if you make the corrections she told you too, shell still grade you as if you hadnt. wouldnt recommend.
She is by far the hardest teacher I have taken in CBC, if you really want to pass this class you need to show up to her office hours every single day, so she can know that you actually care about her class and she will go easy on you on essays. Good Luck
Squire's classes are difficult if you do not have self discipline and aren't willing to put a good amount of effort into your work. She is a tough grader so beware and go through your work with a fine tooth comb. Also do not skip class, you will miss lectures and fall behind. Although, her teaching techniques and skills are very amazing.
I took LGBTQ literature with Ms. Squires. I loved the class. Mainly, she was incredibly passionate about the material. We read five books, which I loved. I definitely struggled with the participation portion at times, but Ms. Squires always made me feel comfortable about speaking up. Also, she's hilarious. I recommend her.
Often times for English 101. The professor would have to explain what the majority of the class did wrong after grading everyones assignments. Teaching is mediocre.
Shes a very tough grader. If you do meet her requirements she will grade you a zero. Despite things being done with certain assignments she will give you a zero if its not meeting her standards.
If she focused on teaching the material as much as she did writing down who raises their hand and talks during her lectures(which consists of asking the same questions that are in the book at the end of each short story and then calling on every single person that raises their hand), I might have actually learned something.
very undecicive on what she wants. Re-did my paper many times because she wasn't feeling it. Ended up redoing my whole essay the day before. Especially frustrating because when I would change it she would say it was good and then the day after she would not feel it and tell me to change another paragraph etc.
Shes tough but its because she has high expectations. Take this class if you want to learn how to be a better writer.
She is a really tough grader, almost ridiculously tough.
I took my first English class with Prof. Squires, and I loved it! She didn't require me to buy any books, and supplied all the reading material for the course. There were 4 essays, including one in-class essay. She has clear grading criteria, and if you meet with her during office hours at least twice per essay, you'll get a good grade.
Professor Squires explains concepts and materials very well, gives you enough time to write the essays (around 2 weeks), and is very accessible and willing to answer questions. The amount of detail she puts into her students' feedback shows that she cares a lot about us and our academic success. She is definitely my favorite English instructor.
Kiera is probably the most contradicting person ever. I think she said this was the first time attendance wasnt graded yet she would be sour about people not showing up. When she gives you feedback on your essay she practically tells you yes but... A professor that you just cannot please. Do not take her complete waste of my time and effort.
She doesnt do word count but she does sentence count. So even if your off by one sentence you automatically get a zero because it doesnt meet minimum requirements
Participation is written down, and I somehow got a 9/10 for the first two weeks. turned in a final an hour late, because campus was closed and she still deducted 25%. One minute late on an A assignment means a C. Doesn't really seem to care about the success of the students. A paper due EVERY SATURDAY (just so she can complain about grading on Mon)
Squires is a terrible professor. Doesnt care about the students success and will go back and forth on whether or not she likes your essay. She picks favorites & if you arent a favorite, youll fail. She is tough in her grading and gives contradictory feedback.
Literally so terrible, does not explain clearly and grades the way she wants and if does not meet what she likes then she will give your whole essay and bad grade. And pretty much dont make a mistake bc she will not let you redo anything
I've enjoyed many different professors here at CBC but Prof Squires is hands down the worst professor I have ever taken a class with. She's VERY POLITICAL and inserts all of her political ideologies into the coursework. Squires is also quite snarky with her proofreading and threw a lot of attitude when I asked for clarification on my papers.
Justice for Prof. Squires! If you're willing to work hard-ish, follow the instructions, watch vids & ASK for help/feedback, you can succeed. You can disagree with her articles but you MUST follow her essay rules & make sure your paper stays on topic, is non-emotional & matches the material. Stay on top of vids & ask for help & you'll be fine.
Worst instructor you could ever have. She don't care if your failing ,she will push you to the ground more if you don't understand her class . Her advise don't makes sense its always negative , theirs no time I get a praise no matter how hard you work on your paper and effort you input into .If I knew about this instructor I would never choose her
Worst teacher I have ever had IN MY LIFE. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS/ She is biased and only cares about her beliefs. She says constantly to not put your opinion and it is because she doesn't want anyone to disagree with her outrageous views. The use of politics is not educational and she will dock you points if you do as she asks. Ridiculous teacher.
Lot of work but not too hard. She is a very tough grader and is very picky, but you are allowed to revise your essays and there are also a lot of opportunities for extra credit. You can Zoom her and she will give you useful personalized advice. She is opinionated though, so if you write something out of her views be sure to write it really well.
Despite struggling through it, I loved Professor Squires's LGBT Studies class. Squires provides adequate historical context to really critically read the text. The books are interesting and beautifully written. Squires is definitely a tough grader, but I did learn a lot about LGBT history, literature, and how to become a better writer.
Seriously reconsider accepting this professor. Bad first time experience with CBC due to the constant steering of this professor, I left the program. This professor should not be allowed to teach any student. She is very discouraging and unhelpful. Will be take up to the director.
Cool person but the work she expects doesnt seem fitting for a 102 level class. We had 3 essays all together and an annotated bibliography. Im a good writer and my highest essay score was only 80%. If you watch all the lectures that have pop quizzes in them (that are graded) she will give you feedback on your papers.
Just a tough teacher and would not take her class again
Worst professor I have ever had. Initial feedback is always negative and not helpful. She acts as though her opinion is the word of christ and that if you think differently you are blatantly wrong. The class average for the first essay was 45%. It's almost impossible to please her, if I had more characters id write more about how awful she is.
Worst professor I have ever had! She is very unprofessional and rude when she gives feedback. This teacher belittles students and makes you feel timid about asking for help or questions.
Professor Squires is a tough grader. You earn your grade in this class. Her lectures were very helpful and each lesson was detailed and prepared me for the work that was ahead. She had major assignments that could be retaken for full credit within a week of receiving your grade. This was amazing because it allowed me perfect my writing. 8/10
This lady.... not only are there a metric ton of videos that are mandatory to watch, but she doesn't even actually read over the papers you submit. She posts them to the turn it in reports and goes strictly off what it says. In which she will fail you for. Never again. Steer clear from this one.
Squires is a tough grader but she gives great feedback and would allow retakes for full credit on the major essays. Feedback was given on essays if you watched the 75% of the assigned videos. She is a great professor and her explanations are very good.
By far the WORST and I mean the WORST professor to ever teach english. She is a very tough grader and although she does allow students to resubmit major assignments nothing ever seems to make her happy. She's not helpful at all. I took her and I regret it 100% she made me feel so dumb. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!! Horrible professor at CBC!!! Disappointed!
If she is the only professor open for english wait until the following quarter to take english. She is not helpful at all and her feedback is pointless. I tried my best in every assignment and she never gave me good feedback. I am a great student and I have never had anything like this before. AVOID TAKING HER CLASS!!!!!!!!! The rates are true!!!!!
This professor was one of the most insane teachers I have ever had. She was so harsh with the grading and didn't really show much sympathy for your success. She did not let me have more time on the timed essay, which I failed. For English 101, do not take this professor.
Squires is a tough teacher, but she genuinely cares about her students. She gives good, constructive feedback when you pay attention and complete her assignments, and she's flexible. During the quarter, my wife had her baby, and Squires extended multiple deadlines I had and excused other assignments. There is a large workload, but you learn a lot.
She is a Tough Grader but I love her teaching, if you want a challenging course to get better from take this course she has a very flexible schedule, I am currently a marching band member and have been extremely busy during this quarter but she extended my assignments and took late work i love her and am def going again!
Would not recommend. Very tough grader.
Not my favorite teaching style. In-class attendance is very important, never stops talking for you to work though.
I never leave reviews on here. Prof. Squires however, absolutely deserves one. The outline of her online class (although a lot of work) is great! she's mapped out each week so you know what to work on each day in order to even your work load. For someone like me who LOVES to procrastinate, having it laid out like this is incredibly helpful.
I took her class for 102. Her grading is so harsh I would try my best in all her assignments as well as her essays I would do my best and proof read and grammar correction but when she would grade my essay there would be an insane amount of mistakes in my essay and with only my grammar mistakes I got a D in the essay. Her feedback is not useful.
Do not take this class! I was considered a good writer until I got into this class. Gives bad feedback, leaving you confused on what to fix or correct. She grades extremely hard. Posts way too many lectures, that are way too long. Do not take this class if you care about having good mental health and good grades.
This professor is by far the worst I've ever had at CBC. I do not recommend taking this course with Squires whatsoever. She grades so harshly and does not care about the success of her students. Her feedback is useless as it will not help you better your work. Do not take this professor!!!!
Harsh grader! Would spend up to 8 hours a day working on the assignments just to get a bad grade. Gives lots of useful feedback, but can sometimes be rude. Grade based off essays. Very very tough grader.
Professor Squires was very knowledgeable in her professional. I would not recommend taking her class if you work full-time and taking 3 classes.
She is a tough professor, but in a good way. She expects you to spend a LOT of time on her class and she is a tough grader. However, her lessons are well thought out and her lectures are interesting. I found her very reasonable to work with when I had questions. She gives good, detailed feedback on your work. I learned a lot!
I am currently in her class right now. I got what seemed like amazing feedback on my drafts for my essays, but when I turned in the final essay I failed it. If she assigns you a book to read, the times essay will be based on that and you will get a pop quiz on the ending. So if you take her class make sure to read the book!
Squires is a nice/fun teacher. She is a harsh grader and the grades I received were low. I've never gotten below a B on an essay before. Gives feedback on all essays thankfully but sometimes is hard to use on the essay. Essay topics were sometimes hard to understand. Her online lectures were up to an hour long. I enjoyed in-person lectures though.
Squires was a great professor and her class was not difficult. I easily passed and if you're not lazy you can too.
This was a very difficult course, she was a harsh & strict grader with a very specific and high standard rubric. Gave horrible feedback in drafts it was not helpful. It felt impossible to write essays that had to be 3-5 pages long all MLA format and had to include evidence. Course includes a book that she knows like the back of her hand!
So much homework all the time. Tries to make you watch multiple 30 minute lessons. Very strict grader, will dock 50% if she doesn't like how you did an assignment. Classes have no point to go to because they don't matter. Assignments are always difficult to submit, very unclear instructions. Advice on essays doesn't help. Bad teacher overall.
shes kinda mean and she is a tough grader so definitely not recommended.
The professor can be a tough grader, but I liked how she offered multiple opportunities for extra credit. Most of the essays in this class will be about Jurassic Park. I would 100% recommend you attend the lectures since that is where most of the information comes from and if you miss it can be difficult to catch up.
Not a lot of assignments, almost all of them are about the essays, 4 essays, 3 of those about Jurassic Park btw, you have to read it for the class. she is pretty tough on grading, the toughest grader I've had. she does give good feedback, and easy to talk to after class. the essays were difficult and odd prompts, no late work, weird due dates.
The professor is really a tough grader, lots of videos to watch, and the instruction does not make sense, she was gone for 1 month because of traveling the world, it's my first college English class, and it is really tough that the professor was gone for that long, not recommend to take her class.
Professor Squires was an amazing professor. Within the whole quarter there are 4 essay's back-to-back, but no homework because of it. You will have to read Jurassic Park by Micheal Crichton for the class, but I personally enjoyed the book. She is super helpful when it comes to answering questions and has student hours :)
DO NOT TAKE her course if you wanna pass.
Only take this class if you absolutely have to. The professor is a very tough grader, and even if you revise your essays, it doesn't raise your grade. She offers a lot of extra credit, but it doesn't help your final grade. The essay topics also aren't very interesting. It's not impossible to do well, but be ready to work hard for every point.
4 major essays, revisions allowed with requirements, extra credit, and practice work. Videos have quizzes in them. It's been a stressful quarter. A lot of reading and she is a HARSH grader. I have cried all quarter long. Feedback not helpful at all.
I took this class as a hybrid. Squires is a respectful and knowledgeable person. She gave us tons of pages of articles to read and annotate. She is very critical of proper MLA format and required us to find some peer reviewed sources. Not a bad professor by any means, but a harsh grader for sure. Truly get ready to read if you take this class!
She's a good professor but really expects too much of a eng 101 class. 4 major essays w/ plenty of practice work in between. You're able to revise 2 of the 4 but she takes a long time grading so the essays end up stacking. You will have to read Jurassic Park which she will tell you she has read like a million times and 3/4 essays are about it so :/
