pretty funny guy, kind of goofy but VERY easy teacher... very knowledgeable
His class was easy, i barely attended and aced it. He is weird - had puppets, bad jokes, etc. - worth the experience i suppose
Sample quiz questions: What's my dog's name. What's the difference between french vanilla and Vanilla. Once a week, instead of a MIS class talks about philosophy of life. I think that I should have been paid money to have him as my instructor.
EASY CLASS Class lecture mainly spent passing out candy, telling jokes and explaining Microsoft Access projects. Varies format most terms, fill in the blank TESTS vs open book QUIZES...kinda sucks. The tests are basically from the terms in the book.
Dum dums and online tests... what more could you want?
He ain't all that good of a teacher.Take my advise and pick a smart person to do the computer work in your group.

Should be on Leno. If you're not a MIS major this is the prof to have. Lectures are next to worthless but if you read the text you will 4.0 the course. And, by reading I mean scimming.
awesome prof
Nice guy. Jokes around to much. Assignments are fairly straight forward. Throws surprise quizes cotianing material lightly covered in class. Always helpful if you stop by his office.
mathieson is a hottie who i love! the best professor ever, gave me candy and money anytime i was mad about a mistake he made and made me laguht.
bad teacher
don't take him, you won't learn a thing
he doesn't teach at all
Very immature, lets his imagination go wild (hippos, camels, and south park--this is what he talks about). Projects are pretty tough, ask lots of questions. Did not really learn anything. Must go to class to get good grades on quizes.
I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HIM
This guys obsession with Xena Warrior princess & camel's is a bit disturbing, but other than that he's alright. One of the projects were hard but the other 2 were ok. Have a studious partner for the projects. The tests are BS, they 10 Q's & can destroy u.
He is nice, but NOT easy like people said. The 2nd project was IMPOSSIBLE. He fools around talking about NON-MIS stuff. The quizzes your clueless what he'll ask, its NOT on terms. Take someone else.
good guy, willing to help.
You will learn a lot about camels and hippos, in between he mentions a few things about MIS. Tests are difficult, go to class because tests will ask you about things from class that are unrelated to the course. He is helpful after class and in his office.
He is very willing to help! It does help to go to class for about a quarter of the test questions, however, you could skate by if you just read all the notes he assigns for each exam throughly and you will do fine! Projects are easy, but it's important to pick a good group! I would recommend him!
He gets sidetracked alot and talks about off-the-wall things. This does some good by getting peoples attentions, however, it also confuses people. Overall I would not hesitate to take another class w/ him.
He's a great professor. Though he get side tacked a lot... He's a great man. He's funny as well as a NERD. If you are a nerd he'll love you. His exams are ok. Hey... its a challenging course so must work hard...
This guy is absolutely funny. I enjoyed his class. He has to be funny otherwise the material will bore you. I recommend this course if your not a slacker. He doesn't like slackers but what teacher does? Take him if you want to be highly entertained.
Just make sure when you take this class you have a good lab partner who is willing to work hard. The projects are difficult, but if you go see him in his office he will answer any question you have. He is funny, in a wierd way, but it makes the class interesting.
Rough class. You need a good partner to help you on projects. He goes off on tangents about flying hippos and the tests are rediculous. He tests on the most random stuff. Not the teacher I would choose again.
Second class with Mathieson, loved both classes. Not an easy A necessarily, but A's are very attainable. Enjoyable classroom atmosphere, loves Xena and hippos, hates Princess Di. Take this guy for any MIS class you need to take.
Not a pleasant semester. Prof is hard to deal with, responds to students questioning his classroom antics with a 'too bad, I have tenure'. Yep, one of those. I couldn't tell if lectures were good, because he was too busy singing (badly, I might add) and creating databases centered around images of death. I got a good grade, but would not recommend.
WEIRD!!! He writes his own book and talks about weird things. I don't care for him but it's easy.
Professor Mathieson is maybe the only Australian pirate you'll ever come across, which makes him worth taking from the jump. He's a bit goofy, which makes lectures fun, even if the material isn't all that interesting. Will also keep you alert by whipping DumDums at you when you participate. I recommend him over the other MIS prof I took, for sure.
This guy creeped me out so bad that I neglected to attend class about 3/4 of the semester in fear that I would get beamed in the face with a dum-dum or be part of a lame and completely non-PC joke. I still ended up with a very good grade.
I was difficult to learn access by simply watching him do it and never going to a lab. No assignments except projects and exams.
Worst teacher at OU. Never seen a teacher turn a student down for help
While the class was straight forward enough, I can honestly say that this guy is one of the most peculiar professors I have ever had. Very dark and oddball humor. Topics ranged from Santa killing his elves to camel hump fat being used for explosives. A bit eerie. I found myself tilting my head to the side as I listened to him quite often.
Easy class if you read the book and participated. I spent 20 mintues a day reading before class and ended up with a 4.0.
I thought that he was a really cool, laid back kind of professor. Easy class. If you go to class and take notes, you'll get an A. Makes the school experience seem easy.
Very cheesy guy with poor jokes. Was not very helpful with anything
Very sick and demented sense of humor, I am surprised he has not been reported! Horrible Professor DO NOT TAKE!
An Interesting professor. Wrote his own book, that is online so you don't have to buy one. His sense of humor is not for everyone. Lots of talk of assassin, camels, kangaroos, zombie bakeries, the sport cricket, Australia, and did i mention zombies. unlike the other reviewers, I always found him helpful. Tries to kill you with Dum Dum Suckers.
Helpful if you go to ask him, but his classes are pretty much a waste of time. You don't have to go and I wouldn'y recommend going unless you like his accent alot. Good news is that the book is online and is free. Bad news is you must teach yourself pretty much everything.
You basically have to teach yourself everything. The course is taught using an online site he created and it's not that helpful. He's nice enough but not a great professor. His exams are super hard and it is normal to do poorly. Also, it's an MIS class but it's 100% about creating a website - total waste of time for me!
This professor is a nerd, he is not helpful, and there are other professors that you could take to actually learn something from. I wish I could get a refund after taking this class with this worthless professor. You will learn little, but will be annoyed a lot! Exam questions don't reflect important aspects of the course. Bad Professor. Not recd.
Mathieson is a great teacher! I have graduated and am now a developer but he was one of the professors who sparked my interest in the field. He is upbeat which made it easier for me to pay attention, rather than some boring monatone professor. Sure he is a bit goofy, but that is a nice break from some boring grouchy profs.
Fun class. Very easy!
This professor is horrible. First of all this is a class where you are supposed to learn how to use Excel and Access. Well we never even opened either of those programs!I got an 87% in the class and that to him translates to a 2.8.He forgets his own requirements for the projects so asking him questions is pointless cause you're gonna get points off
His class was awesome! took him for MIS420 and He managed the class very well by providing students with help as they needed. Class was 4 projects as long as you have all the requirements, your golden. Highly recommend!
Awesome professor I dont know why anyone wants to complain he is very upbeat of a character and will make you feel awake instead of being in a boring classroom. You do not even need the book, he gives a practice exam "fauxam" before each exam done on the computer all are very simple and easy if you know basic access and excel. You will have fun!
He taught the class as an online class, using his own online course. It's a good start but he needs to work on it for clarity because it stunted my learning. He also uses somewhat vulgar humor in his lessons and practice problems.
I loved this class. You build four websites, and you really learn a lot of cool things. He always brought candy to class and told jokes. There are no tests. The websites starts off pretty easy but the last assignment was pretty tough and involved, but you don't have to worry about writing code, and you can work with another person in the class
Funny prof with his Australian sense of humor. He is funny and passes out candy every day. He spends too much time with students so if you ask for help be the first one otherwise you will stay super later after class and possibly not get help that is needed. Otherwise had a great time in the class.
Professor Kieran Mathieson is a great professor. He teaches MIS 305 as a flipped course. Basically he designed his own website and you learn from this website (it is really cool!) that he designed. There are NO TEXTBOOKS. If you never programmed before this is the professor to take it with. Attendance isnt mandatory. He is also really helpful.
There are no lectures - this class is teach yourself. Class time is to ask questions & work with classmates. We were required to complete 40 exercises. There are 3 exams & IF YOU WANT TO PASS YOU MUST COMPLETE THE EXERCISES. Kieran does pre-exams before every exam so go to those classes. You can re-use code on exams & use google. Highly recommend!!
Probably the worst professor. Created his own website - makes you do excercises on this website and then create websites based off of the excercises. Didn't learn a thing because you use a program called Drupal. He won't help you unless you beg! Don't need to show up to class. The most unorganized class ever. I did good however, and he was funny! A
His class was amazing. If you have any previous experience with coding its will be breeze for you, and if you dont, show up for class and get the help. the course is laid out very nicely for beginners to learn. you will be challenged with the test but the practice test he gives will help you pass! TAKE HIS CLASS!
I've had Kieran for multiple MIS courses at OU. All of his classes are flipped courses, you read content and teach yourself material outside of class, in class you do tasks and receive feedback from Kieran. He gives great feedback and you learn a lot. I recommend anyone, if given the chance, take a course with him.
Kieran truly cares about students and wants you to learn. Coding in VBA seemed hard but if you put the time in to read the textbook and do exercises you won't have a problem learning. Attendance is not required and class time is used for Kieran to help you with your code.
It's a flipped course, so you teach yourself the material and attend class for help. You teach yourself off his website which I found laid everything out very easy. You do exercises to learn Visual Basic. If you find it easy, no need to attend class. I do recommend going to practice exams the week before since you can reuse the code. Funny guy.
I have taken him before, and I just love his classes! This is a web application course, and it's fun! You teach yourself from his website, and he's always willing to help you. He's a super funny guy and I would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn any coding. His websites are awesome - he deserves an award for how much work he puts in!
I've never programmed before and he made it so easy to learn. I don't understand anyone complaining about his website, it was so simple and straightforward I didn't have to attend class (you show up if you need help or to work together). Good for both beginners and people who already know what they're doing since attendance isn't mandatory.
Your scheduled class time is only for the exams and to work with others if you want. Don't even have to show up for class each week. All the work is done online, no "textbook" to purchase. The website you use is really cool and useful. Great for someone with zero programming experience but could be a bit too simple for someone who already knows VBA
This class is a web design class. He always makes his own "textbook," which is a website. It started out very easy, and then all of a sudden it made no sense. His explanation of JavaScript was little to no help, the website was VERY confusing, and he is way too picky on grading. He didn't explain JQuery, yet included it in some of his sample code.
Amazing professor! He created a website that is used to teach the class for free, instead of making you buy the textbook. He's really funny in class. Attendance is not mandatory, only if you need help and during the few exams. Exams were fairly easy, if you do the work on your own. Very clear and straightforward. Can't recommend him enough
One of my favorite professors so far. He is extremely funny and is always so helpful. Attendance isnt required but its good to go and work with others or ask questions. You teach yourself from a website he put together. No books. I am a visual/hands on learner and still was able understand and get an A. I highly recommend him!
Made his own website so you teach yourself based on that. His website has 50 excel VBA (coding) exercises, you only need to complete 40 to get credit for the homework portion and 3 exams. Exams are easy if you do the exercises. He does a review the week before. Only have to go to class if you need help and for exams. But do the HW- overall 10/10
If all professors took teaching lessons from this guy, college would be much more enjoyable. This guy tries to leverage experiential learning to help solidify information. His exams are like homework projects where in order to do well, you have to do the work! Overall, a motivational class, very few and far between at OU.
My favorite professor at OU. The class is all hands-on. You teach yourself from his website and go to class if you need help and to work with others- no lectures! 3 exams and about 50 exercises but you only need to do 40 to get credit. Do the exercises and you're golden, you can work at your own pace too. But seriously do the exercises they help
Great professor, you teach yourself based off the website he made. No lectures as class time is to work with others and ask for help. The exercises do get more challenging at the end of the semester so be sure to ask help when you need. He's a really nice, funny, and he's Australian. Always willing to help, 10/10
Fun loving dude. Super kind. The VBA class I took centered on in class homework. You ask around for help before asking Kieran. When you do ask him questions he is absolutely happy to help.
t's a coding in excel class. You do about 50 exercises on his website. You only go to class if you need help and for exams. Overall I enjoyed this class a lot! I am a hands on learner and although some of the exercises were challenging they were fun to code. The material does get rlly tough near the end so be sure to ask for help, you'll need it!
My favorite professor at OU. Had him last semester for MIS 3050. Class is flipped so you only come if you need help and to take the exams. If you do his exercises and understand them there is no way you won't 4.0 this class. He's also funny and an Aussie!
All professors need to take a page from his teaching style. The class is flipped so you can work at your own pace, if you want to get ahead all the exercises for the whole semester are on available on his website- which is what he teaches off of. He's really nice and has a quirky sense of humor, makes the class fun. One of my favorite professors!!
Would recommend taking courses with this professor. His teaching style is unique and geared toward student success. Often available for help, even on weekends for in person help. Grading is straightforward and fair. Class uses online book and program written by the professor and it is completely free. Strange sense of humor but funny none the less.
Mathieson is now my favorite professor at OU. First off you teach yourself off the website he made (so it's free!). You only come to class if you need the help and to take the 3 exams. I learn by doing and not sitting in a 3 hours lecture so I excelled in his course! Do the 40 exercises to get credit for the hw portion and to prepare you for exams
My favorite professor I've ever had. Makes the material so easy to understand and talks through everything. Class is actually fun and he lets you come if you have questions or just show up for test days.
Im terrible at coding so this was already going to be bad. Theres 40 exercises on a website he made that are very time consuming. I didnt find his textbook, feedback useful. He doesnt grade the exercises himself. Its basically credit or no credit but you dont know that till final grades. Will not respond to emails. In general nice and caring.
Professor Mathieson created his own textbook and platform for this class but don't worry, it's completely free! The modules were easy to understand and took you through each step of using Excel VBA. Assignments were not difficult and all exams were just like the assignments: create a file and upload.
I was nervous to take MIS 3000 as the first MIS class I took was very difficult for me. This class was anything but difficult. If there was anything that you couldn't do or had trouble on he would go step by step with you on how to do the exercise to pass. Class is not mandatory, only when you need help. Go at your pace and their are no tests!
The website/Textbook Kieran made was well built and the material was well presented. He was accessable via video chat for getting help with the class. You can go as fast as you want through MIS1050 which is nice. Personally I had experience with the topic so it was pretty easy to me. Bottom line taking Kieran's class is worth it.
Professor Mathieson is the nicest prof. I've met so far. He's accessible every day to answer your questions and honestly cares about helping you. I'm a beginner in coding but his help and textbook made it easy to pass!
I couldn't even wait until this class was over. WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! He went MIA at this point in the semester. When kids ask questions in the forum he just either never responds, gives unhelpful answers, or tells kids to Google it. He seems like a nice guy but should not be a teacher. If you're thinking about this class, RUN!
Kieran is a nice guy. He is a bad professor. He answers questions after assignments/projects are due. He assigns homework over university scheduled breaks. If you take this class just make sure you're okay with it taking up all of your time because you'll be teaching yourself 85% of the work. If you're considering this class, I'd look elsewhere.
Kieran is great. Have taken two classes with him and it is clear what you need to do. He will teach you something using lectures on his website. At the end of the lesson you will be asked to do something similar. Requiring a little brain power/solving. Then you will be tested on it. Clear goals and you will learn something if you motivate yourself.
If you need interaction and clarification, don't take Kieran. He's funny, and makes class as cheap as possible. However, he's relatively unavailable, spreads himself thin across many classes(doesn't answer emails or read properly), and exercises are not all related to his lessons. His classes are very overwhelming!
Professor Mathieson is very funny but is bad at his job. He doesn't supply usable or helpful feedback(if you can get a hold of him), his examples/textbook are starkly different to the assignments, and you have to teach yourself everything. If you are familiar with php before this class take him but if not, he is not the right one to teach it!
His online textbook is very well structured and easy to follow when learning. This class is basically teach it yourself but all the resources are there. Only downside is he can be hard to reach sometimes via email.
Do not listen to the bad criticism for Professor Mathieson. I learned so much about Excel VBA in this course. He does not tell you too buy a book, instead he offers a built in website he made that literally makes your life easier. If you want to pass do the hw, the tests will be easy that way. To pass the hw, just copy and paste from the book. ez
I took his MIS 3050 class(in fall) and it was super easy but I took him again, regretted it.4260 he had completely unexplained/unrelated code. He is difficult to reach, would take 3 days or more to respond! He's nice but a lazy professor, I had to have my dad(professional coder or 18 years help me) and agreed his stuff was too static and confusing!
This class is all about learning VBA. As someone who never coded anything before, his online textbook (free btw) was super understandable and easy to use. Kieran can be slow when responding to emails, so it's best to come into class when he's available. He has optional 3 hour-long personal sessions every 2 days where he will assist you personally.
Coding was super hard for me but his free online textbook made it bearable. Impressive that he hardly includes any walk-through videos (he sometimes does) but I was still able to understand it through reading because he's a clear step-by-step explainer. His office hours are an absolute must though (and I've never gone to office hours before)
great professor for an asynchronous course. his class website is his textbook. he made it very easy to learn the material. there is a lot of assignments but you get three tries on all of them and you can submit up to a week late if you fall behind.
This is a very hard class and would not recommend taking it. However, if you do take his class. He cares about his work and students, is very funny and loves his dogs
TAKE THIS COURSE. Super fun and engaging. Everything is right in front of you and easily understandable step by step, some mistakes and oversights but everything is credit/Nocredit so easy enough. You get to make your own website and get creative at times. Or dont be creative and get the same grade your choice.
If you are not tech-savvy or not interested in this stuff, I do not suggest taking it. I struggled and found it very confusing, a lot of the assignments I was getting them wrong, but allowed to redo them. Also, it's asynchronous, so you can do it whenever. Pro tip: don't wait until the last minute otherwise, you will fail the class. Tbh just avoid.
If you are not super good with tech I do not recommend this course. It is definitely a difficult class but completing assignments is rewarding. Kieran is super helpful throughout with whatever questions you have, and the class is flexible. As long as you get a check mark on your assignments you will pass the class.
Professor Kieran is amazing! His textbook is clear and easy to follow, with all lessons and assignments inside. You get multiple attempts to improve your work, and he offers virtual office hours almost daily where he will help you with improve with anything you need! He truly cares about his students. I STRONGLY recommend taking MIS 1050 with him!
If you have little to no experience with coding, avoid this class. Kieran is very kind, but there's no way to get reliable 1:1 help. You WILL be on your own all semester. He uses an online workbook, which his TA grades. The TA is a tough grader. If you're looking at this for a gen-ed, I'm begging you, find an alternative. Waste of tuition.
Take Kieran. His website is the class textbook and is FREE. Taken 3 courses in this method and each taught me valuable skills in a palatable way. I finished the entire course over the summer on the class website and turned all homework in on day1. Theres still exams through the course which maybe take a few hours 3 times. 10/10 would recommend
