Does not explain anything and gets annoyed if you ask questions. He says "Everyone get it.. K" without letting anyone answer. He expects you to know everything you learned from sophomore year in high school. DO NOT take chemistry with him, unless you want to be talked down to.
I honestly despise this man, my social life is gone and I cannot live my life one day without thinking of the torture this class brings me. Man does not explain anything and says "okay" all the time and believes you can have half a molecule. Would not touch this class ever again.
This guy is goofy, but he is fair when it comes to the exams. Class consists of online quizzes and exams. Attended lecture, he gives hints about questions on the quizzes and exams.
His tests are more than fair and test grades are curved depending on the average. He gives opportunities for extra credit and his lectures are great. Gives pointers on quizzes to people who show up for class and is very accessible during office hours. Holds extra review sessions that he doesn't have to. Go to class and go to all the reviews!!
Worst professor you could have. He's extremely rude and condescending, and will humiliate any student who asks a question. The material itself is not difficult, but he either doesn't teach it, or makes it more confusing than it should be. You'll have to teach yourself everything.
The dude gets a bad rep for no reason. He could be harsh if you don't understand basic algebra or get a supposedly easy question wrong, but that's the only negative. There's no surprises on exams and everything is pretty straight forward. Show up and you can get opportunities for extra credit.
Awesome professor, after a horrible 2443 orgo professor I was scared it was gonna be just as bad but he explains everything in detail and moves at a great pace. He tells you everything you need to know and also gives helpful study tips and lots of help outside of class if you need it. If you need to take orgo take it with him.
He is a really good prof and if you wanna get good grade you definitely wanna take his class. He would hold many review sessions and also, you will be given lots of chances to get extra credits (some of them are ONLY talked in class so you should attend to class as many as possible). As you know, organic chem always not easy so be prepared anyway.
I've really enjoyed being part of Dr. Tran's class he is personable, goofy, passionate about his work, easy to follow, and explains things really well. One thing I really appreciated is that Dr. Tran posts lecture videos for all of his lectures online, something I found really helped me study for exams and catch anything I missed.
Dr. Tran overall is an average professor. He does care about you (to some extent), but the way of assessment does not really give him an accurate picture of how the class is learning. His lectures are good, but the material for the entire course is COMPLETELY DISORGANIZED. There is no linear progression and really made studying for the exams hard.
Tran is definitely the best orgo professor you can get... just beware, he drops "everybody agree?" at minimum thirty times per lecture. Best quality? Only goes over what he wants you to know - so just review his video lectures and practice exams to get an A. Also no ACS final exam, woo!
He is nice
The whole class is graded on 550 points but you can get 50 extra bonus points. Exams are also extremely similar to exams of previous semesters and the practice exam. This is my second time taking Orgo 2 (first time I got a D with Peczuh) and Tran makes it really easy to succeed. Literally just do your work. Also, he's really sassy with answering Qs
Tran gives a lot of extracredit and hw/quizzes that help your grade. The first two exams were difficult, but more than fair. The final exam was a complete blindsight, hardest exam I have ever taken. Tran is also not very polite to his students, so people are very hesitant to actually raise their hand in class when they dont understand something :(
class was going okay (mostly due extra credit)but his final was insane. as someone who understand orgo pretty well, the difficulty was absolutely ridiculous. There were things on there that I nor anyone that asked knew who to do and I am not one to get anything lower than a B in orgo. SO TERRIBLE and its worth 2 exams so there goes everyones grades
Dr. Tran lectures in a way that is easy to understand and most of what he says in lecture will appear on exams. I would recommend going to class as he gives extra credit quizzes, but if you are not able to definitely listen to his lecture recordings. He gives lots of practice problems, most of which are similar to questions you will see on exams.
This class is super straightforward, but you definitely want a good TA as well. His exams aren't too bad, but you need to make sure you review organic chemistry or else it'll catch you. Lab reports are also super easy and sometimes will feel strange with how little they ask of you. Just do your work, pay attention, and review material from orgo.
Absolutely worst professor I have ever had. So rude and is not a good source for help. Orgo is already hard and having him as your professor will just make it harder. Cant teach and expects you to know everything. Degrading people for getting wrong answers. Get ready for some tears and late nights.
Very rude and dismissive of students questions. Makes you feel dumb if you do not know something. Moves so quickly in lectures it is hard to keep up.
Made a difficult class pretty manageable. Very good lectures, does a lot of practice problems and won't waste your time. Quizzes, homework, and exams online on sapling, no lockdown browser. A little extra credit available throughout the semester. Must show up to lecture to get participation credit!! Big tough guy when answering questions
Tran is a good teacher and posts his lectures. I highly recommend watching them again to study. He builds up knowledge pretty well and even though he's snarky and can come off as rude I think he truly wants us to succeed and explains concepts well. I retook orgo w him and all the quizzes/hw/exams are on sapling so get really good at the program
I regret not giving this professor more credit at the beginning of the class. He is strict don't get me wrong, but he's just trying to teach difficult material online to over 150 students at a time, so I can see why he gets frustrated when he has to repeat himself. He's funny and a decent teacher, but does get a little rude at times.
Dr. Tran made Organic 1 quite very learnable. He seems to care about the students even if he makes the occasional snarky comment. Sometimes he gets frustrated during lecture when people interrupt him, but you can't blame him as he is teaching 200 students a difficult course. Highly recommend taking organic 1 with him if you can.
Not really sure what to think of him. He's really good at explaining difficult concepts, exams are fair, and he offers a lot of extra credit. On the other hand, the class feels completely disorganized whether it be his powerpoints, grading, or communication. Certainly possible to do well, but can be frustrating at times. Recommend.
Dr. Tran is the rudest professor I have ever had. He is unreasonable and extremely un-empathetic when it comes to ANY problem a student may have. He is extremely condescending to every single student and thinks he's better than everyone. HIGHLY would not recommend. Don't know how he isn't fired yet.
Not sure how to feel about him. On one hand, he explains tough concepts well, exams are fair, and he gives lots of extra credit. On the other hand, the course material is very unorganized and its evident there is low effort put into lecture materials. Can be frustrating and condescending at times but overall recommend.
Im a little torn. On one hand, his exams were very fair. However, he presented the information in a way that made me think that hes been doing high level stuff for so long that he kind of forgot the basics, or that hes in a rush. The practice exams / exams had mistakes that students caught, but he didnt. Overall pretty sloppy, but not awful.
In terms of academics, he's good at explaining concepts- especially the really difficult ones. He also provides lots of extra credit. A lot of this was buried, however, under the fact that he's extremely rude and often outright disrespectful to students if they ask questions he thinks are stupid or don't understand something right away.
Literally just don't take this class or 2443 with him if you want to pass. Orgo is hard to begin with and then his teaching is just jumping all over to random topics and does not explain well at all. Exams are hard because he doesn't teach. Even smart students do poorly in this class. Screw him, you are so so bad and deserve to be fired.
I heard he gave great practice exams and fair tests. He did neither. Very mean, need 93.3 for an A and 86.6 for B+, good lecturer is his only positive quality. Get ACS guide, take a light credit load, and study like hell, even then the exams are on a platform no one uses and always have topics never covered. Main suggestion- take a different prof.
Great lecturer. Orgo is a hard class but he broke it down and made it easy to understand. He really wants his students to succeed. Held practice sessions and told you exactly what he wants on the exams. Exams can be tricky but questions are fair. He is sassy though so if you ask a stupid question he'll call you out in front of the whole class.
Great when it comes to teaching, clearly explains MOST topics. But i swear to god he is the most condescending insufferable professor I've had, like be warned if you try to ask a question. Not a great person, bearable professor.
While he presents the material well, he is insanely condescending and not respectful of students. The final is the ACS national orgo exam, which is unfair especially if you did not take orgo 1 with him
lectures were okay, wasnt a fan of how they were organized in multiple slides but overall he explained things well. He gave extra credit, included sapling HW in the grade, which was a good grade boost. Tests were okay. Did not like that the final was the ACS exam (national average is around a 60).
Apparently a bunch of people think he's mean? Yeah, he gets sarcastic if you ask dumb-as-hell, irrelevant questions, but other than that he's SO GREAT. He's hilarious in a kind of cheesy, dad-like way, REALLY sweet and approachable one-on-one for office hours, and he's just. A cool guy. Hands down my favorite professor I've had at UConn so far.
Orgo is a difficult class but he makes it easy to understand and is clear about what you need to know for exams. His exams are just like the homework so it's easy to do and not a ton of pressure. He can be a bit rude to students, so don't take it personally. Go to him if you're struggling or have questions!
In previous reviews they say he is mean, but in reality he is just sarcastic and that is his sense of humor. So far I have had a clear understanding of what is going on is his class and actually remembering what I am learning. I am already scheduled to have him the next semester for CHEM 24444 and Organic Laboratory (CHEM 2445).
Kiet is a great professor and makes the material less intimidating than the textbook does. His examples in lecture accurately reflect the homework and exams. I highly recommend going to his review sessions for extra practice before the exam. He is one of the best professors I have had and has made this class not as hard as it is sought out to be.
Orgo 2 is definitely difficult, but Dr. Tran did a great job breaking down the materials and explaining the tough concepts to us. His grading scale is definitely slightly harsher than the other professors (need 93.3 to get a full A) but he gives a decent amount of extra credits to boost our grades. Can be a little sassy sometimes though lol
Tran is passionate about what he does but can come off sassy and blunt often. He wants students to do well although effort needs to be put in to achieve a good grade in the course. Participating in lectures and completing all assignments is crucial.
Dr. Tran is one of the best professors Ive ever had. He broke down concepts well and did a lot of practice problems in class which was really helpful in preparation for exams. I had orgo 1 with a different professor and struggled a lot. Definitely take orgo with Tran and do his extra credit assignments!!!!!
Tran is hilariously rude and if you have a question, don't ask him. He's incredibly negative and annoying but I am taking him again for orgo2 because the class itself is fair. There is a lot of extra credit and buffer room so you can get bad test grades and still do okay overall.
Kiet Tran is such an amazing professor. I hated him so much at the beginning because everything was so difficult, but as the class progresses it gets so much easier. I never read the book but I rewatched every lecture and retook the notes. If you do that much and show up to the review sessions, you will do well in class.
I loved Tran, I did not think I would end orgo with an A but here we are. He explains things super well and makes stuff easy to understand. I rewatched just online lectures a bunch which is how I studied and I went to his review sessions that helped. Overall I liked him, btw he was only rude to people who asked dumb quest lol sorry not sorry
Tran is a pretty good professor for Orgo 1. His lectures could be a little clearer but they're still helpful. Homework and extra credit will help a lot. Quizzes even contain questions directly from the homework, and he will tell you in advance. He is only rude if you ask REALLY stupid questions. Just listen and don't be dumb.
Tran is the guy to take for Orgo 1/2. Gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Exams are graded easy as well. Posts lectures and helpful material online. People complain about him being rude but he was very nice in my section. The best 2444 professor to take if you want to learn a good amount and get a good grade.
Tran is the guy to take for Orgo. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities that make it easier to increase your grade. Personally, I think his teaching methods are better than Beshir. He records every lecture and holds extra office hours every week. Every problem on the assessments directly reflect the course content, except for the final.
HARD CLASS. Keeping up with the material is essential. Rewatch each lecture right after class, he posts them all. Exams are on Achieve, get 2 tries for each question, -50% for a second attempt if you get the answer right the second time. Lots of extra credit, ATTEND CLASS SO YOU GET THOSE POINTS. Gives you a full month for homework submissions.
Dr. Tran is a great professor, he can be a little short with students, but ultimately he is a great teacher. Helped me understand, I definitely wouldn't have passed without him. If you have to take orgo, take it with him.
Excellent professor, can be snarky however. Very accessible outside of class, workshops are helpful, & he gives lots of extra credit opportunities if you attend lectures. Do NOT come unprepared or waste his time and you'll do well and get a ton out of his class. Exams are on Achieve online & the final is the ACS exam; PRACTICE on multiple devices.
Not hard to do well in this class, but Tran is very condescending and rude, isn't accessible whatsoever and will make fun of you if you ask too many questions. Avoid at all costs
Very rude
An immature and moody person. Manages to take everything to heart including attendance and questions. Is always looking for someone to belittle and a reason to be upset. Honestly the most childish professor I've ever heard of. I would avoid tran if at all possible.
Yes, the other reviews are true-- Dr. Tran is kind of an a-hole. However, if you think of it like "orgo bootcamp" and listen to all his directions, he actually makes it pretty easy to get an A in his class. There's tons of graded stuff besides exams, which is good for keeping the grade up. He grades fair, but it is cut and dry, not a lot of wiggle.
I audited his lectures to see if I should take Ochem with him, and it felt like the twilight zone. SUPER rude professor.. somebody asked a question and he replied "do you speak English? I'm tired of stupid questions". He said if we don't understand him there's "something wrong with us". Honestly, it's not us... there's something wrong with him.
Ok it's true that Dr.Tran can easily get annoyed and starts ranting (it's actually funny when he does that lol) when students don't show up to class or when he's in a bad mood. But, honestly, he made this class so much easier (1 dropped lab, 2 dropped quizzes, and occasional extra credits for those showed up) & less stressful than most chem classes
Based purely on his effective lectures and effective course management (XC opportunities), I would have awarded Professor Tran a 4, or even a 5. However, based on their cumulative grades and level of content comprehension, he does seem to have a very big ego and makes numerous rude comments about his students.
Horrible
In terms of his teaching and the fairness of this course, Dr. Tran gets a 5/5. However, as the others have said, he can get very passive aggressive with his students when he's in a bad mood (2/5). Overall, he organized this course really well. If only he could get along with his students better and not complain about us too much.
Dr. Tran knows the material inside and out, he's just not the best person. He's often rude in class and will spend a lot of time ranting about why we don't know material and talking bad about other professors. The class is wicked easy if you've taken 2443-4. Quizzes were very easy and I hear his class is much better than the other prof who teaches.
Dr. Tran is a terrible person. He has a huge ego, constantly tells his students that they are lazy and stupid and that we're lucky to have him as a professor. But it's so damn entertaining. Also, he gives so much credit and the final is curved heavily. I didn't get an A on a single exam and ended with an A in the class. 10/10 would recommend.
Tran is very knowledgable and is fairly effective at teaching which makes up for his blatant disrespect for his students. He will get upset in front of everyone if you ask a "stupid question." It's honestly comical most of the time when he's not mad directly at you. Fair grader and a good professor, just has an inflated ego and attitude problems.
He was a good lecturer when he actually lectured. A lot of classes he would rant about students/med school which was a waste of time. He gives a second attempt on exam questions which is helpful and the exams are online. Nothing is curved except the final exam. Take someone else for Orgo 1.
Really tough class. Content isn't easy. Dr. Tran is cool.
Some other reviews say that Dr. Tran is "real" or find him funny, but really he's just rude to students with questions. Additionally, as the semester goes on, he begins to rant more and more (his record was about 30min iirc) so class just becomes a waste of time. Otherwise content is not very difficult, reading the online textbook can be helpful.
Dr. Tran is the most disrespectful professor I've ever had. He ridicules the students who answer his questions incorrectly and gets upset at the students who don't attend class by ranting and complaining to those who attend class. The labs are always uncoordinated; we were told one thing in the lecture and did something else in the lab.
He was a great Professor. All these comments about him being disrespectful aren't necessarily wrong, but if you let it get to you, you're just too sensitive. Get on your grind, get your work done, pull up to lectures, take some notes, and just sit down for the ride.
He posts all the lectures and gives a good way to study for exams. The class is mostly graded on labs and the exams aren't worth much but they go over some concepts you learn from gen chem and orgo 1. Not a bad professor at all just intolerant of stupidity.
He's not kind but he is a very good professor and he teaches well. You will absolutely learn in this class, MUST attend, and don't even think about cheating on anything. His exams are on Achieve and are hard but he curves the final. If you need extensions, must have proof of the reason, do not lie to him.
He definitely knows orgo and knows it well, but his attitude and the way he talks to students really tick you off. When students would ask question, he would laugh and respond in a condescending manner. Exams are on Achieve and you can see right immediately if it is right or wrong, so it was anxiety inducing. DO NOT TAKE, mid prof, terrible person.
Dr. Tran is quite the character. The class is HARD, a lot harder than the first semester. It was my first really hard class and I had to change a lot of my habits. Lectures are very engaging and I was never bored in a single one. The class content is applicable to so many fields and very interesting.
Entertaining and well-paced lectures despite taking this class over the summer. Hard class, but he provides many resources for students (i.e., free textbook he wrote, MCAT prep) and hosts weekly online workshops which were very helpful. He may say snarky things but they shouldn't bother you if you know you're putting the work in. Great professor!
not the worst to be honest. He just is very real. He gets things done and doesn't play around. Yes he is kind of rude to be honest but you just have to watch what you say around him. I liked him hes not bad DO THE EXTRA CRED. it helps ur grade. no weekly quiz's and the exams carry your grade. His teaching style keeps me accountable if you like that
He is sassy and has a lot of attitude. He is pretty disrespectful to his students and then wonders why no one wants to participate in class. His exams are pretty fair game but Orgo 2 is just a hard subject in general. He gives a lot of extra credit which genuinely help your grade so much. Overall class is manageable butas a person he isnt the best
He is rude and will talk down to you, just don't take it personally and you will be fine. Despite his disrespect he is a good teacher. Tests are fair but study hard for them, the final exam is curved pretty heavy. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. Attend lecture as his slides go more in depth that you need to know.
Dr. Tran is one of the best lecturer's at UConn. He is engaging, and truly cares about every student's success. However, his passion for his student's success leads to a rude style of teaching. Dr. Tran likes to play the role of a "dad" for all his students, which makes him feel the need to verbally punish a student if a "stupid question" is asked.
Tran is a good professor but he is very condescending and unforgiving towards students. He is directly mean to students who may not understand the information in the lecture and discourages those who are doing poorly. The exams are rough and make sure to do a LOT of practice or else the concepts won't stick and you will do bad on them.
Gives out extra credit like Santa Claus. Exams are taken on Achieve. Can be bad, but you at least get to see your grade instantly. Teaching is extremely direct if a little concise. Has an imposing personality. Might not answer questions if they're "stupid" to him. Will tell you to "Get Good". OVERALL: Somewhat abrasive, but a very good teacher.
Dr Tran is a great professor and people who slander him need to honestly grow up. For both Chem 2443 an 2444, he is the best professor to teach the material. He does not lecture and have you guess on what will be on the exam, instead he has everything to help you succeed on them, TRUST ME. People who grade him bad can't handle a joke, you're 20.
Was generous with extra credit and made it clear what was on the exams and did lots of review. No weekly quizzes which was amazing. Was extremely rude and condescending for literally no reason which made it hard to want to engage with him outside of class.
Orgo is hard and if you think there is even a chance that you are going to want extra help, do NOT take Tran. He is so rude and will not answer your questions. His extra credit on the exams is great, but it is max 4 points. HW is easy but not very helpful. He makes sense in lecture, but you are ON YOUR OWN if you take him. He doesn't care about you
Pros and cons like all profs. More pros by a long shot. Take his class!
He has a very condescending way of doing lectures, will stop said lectures to scold class if he feels we aren't answering enough questions, which of course discourages participation. Doesn't seem to understand he's teaching a general/beginner chemistry class and not his beloved org. chem class. Knows his stuff, but could do without the "dad-itude".
Dr. Tran is one of the most disrespectful professors I have ever had. He is rude to students if they ask any questions, and accused me of lying about my grandfather dying to get out of a lab on the day of his funeral. Do not take from him if you want a professor who respects you.
Tran as a person is very rude. He scolds the class if he feels you aren't answering question you should already know and students for asking questions and will go on a huge rant in the middle of the lecture. As a Professor I must say he does give us all the tools we need to succeed. He also gives extra credit after exams. DO HOMEWORK!
Though Dr. Tran gets a bad reputation for being rude for a reason, he is an incredible professor. I did not take him for Orgo 1 because of the reviews I read on Rate My Professor and now that I have him for Orgo 2 I realize how much of a disservice I did myself. Dr. Tran is an incredible professor, and explains concepts to understand not memorize.
One of the rudest and most condescending professors on campus. Will talk down to you if you don't understand the topics and will make fun of you if you try to talk to him about a bad grade. The 5 exams make up 75% of your grade and "participation points" make up another 12.5%. Don't bother meeting with him because you'll just end up embarrassed.
Very tough professor. Super belittling, so don't even ask ?'s because he'll indirectly call you stupid. He's clear with what you're graded on, but the exams are on achieve. he knows what he's teaching and is engaging. Attendance is mandatory because of surveys given at random points throughout the semester, which count for a big part of your grade
Tough professor. Grade is 60% exams and they are challenging but very fair. Gives so much extra credit (about 6-8% of final course grade). Little brash when questions are asked and refers to himself as a genius, but if you don't care about ego and want to learn OChem, he's the professor you want. Every question has two attempts on exams. Very good.
Although he can come off as very mean, he does really care about his students grades. He simplifies the material much more than the other professors and the exams are very related to lecture material. He also has SI and workshop sessions that are very useful. His class is much easier than Basu or Beshir or Amy.
Does not care about his students. Tells us how smart he is all the time and makes everyone feel stupid. Final tanked my grade, he switched up his test format the day of. If you can take someone else.
Easily the most disrespectful professor I've ever had. Don't bother going to his office hours to ask questions because he'll just make fun of you. He switched up his exam format on the day of the final exam which absolutely tanked my grade. Your best bet is to take another professor if you want a good grade in organic chemistry.
Understood orgo better with him than any other orgo professor at UCONN. Grading is extremely fair and exams are very straight forward, but the finals absolutely ruined my grade! It is not like the other exams and very difficult.
His attitude can definitely be a lot nicer and he's very rude and harsh sometimes, but from what I've seen, it's typically it's in response to a question that was already addressed, or something that can be easily be found through resources like textbook/lectures. If you don't take it personally, you will do fine in his class. Lots of extra credit.
Tran is an amazing professor who actually sparks interest in chemistry. His lectures make material very easy to understand and he also records most of them. He gives a lot of extra credit for Orgo II, and you don't have to do that well on exams to get an A. You shouldn't be scared of taking it with him.
Rudest prof i've come across here. Don't try asking questions. His exams are really easy if you know the basics though and he does have easy extra credit. Spends more time in class talking about how he's a genius than actually teaching concepts. Use the textbook and exam reviews to study. GO TO SI IF YOU CAN! si was the only reason i did well
He's very passive aggressive and sometimes gets mad when you question his work. But overall he's a good teacher but chem 1127 is already so hard so pay attention
Expected you to know everything and didn't explain a lot. He also just paraded around the lecture about how smart and amazing he was all the time and didn't care about the class. He just wanted to be teaching orgo. Did not care about how well his students were doing, just cared about being faster and better than the other professors.
Very rude and often goes on long tangents about himself or being mad at students. Definitely explains topics well but OChem is just so hard and the tests are very difficult. Maybe im bias because I suck at OChem but jeez this class
Class is mostly graded on labs and lab worksheets, which are easy. Experiments can be a little confusing, so pray for a good TA. Quizzes are also incredibly easy. Tran will sometimes throw hissy fits, which is just unprofessional but hilarious to experience.
Can come off as rude, but I found that I understood chemistry better with him than any other professor at UConn so far. His slides and homework are accurate to what content you'll be dealing with on exams. Good amount of extra credit offered, and the SLFP that he is implementing does help. If you can handle rants and want to learn chem, take him
Terrible professor did not prepare us well enough at all for the final. Exams were doable but having to draw final products in achieve is annoying. If you even misplace a bond somewhere it marks it incorrect and he is not empathetic or understanding of that at all. Mean and only talks about how much of a genius he is. Take beshir instead if you can
Dr. Tran isn't as bad as everyone says. The tests are difficult but if you study and go to his workshop sessions you can still do well. He also gave several extra credit assignments throughout the semester and curved the final. Overall I liked him as a professor and felt he taught the material well.
He is one of the best chem teachers to be honest. If you can sit through his tangents in class you should do good. Left us almost completely in the dark on the final which was frustrating, but he curves it. He's realistic, but some students can take it as mean spirited which I understand.
Professor Tran is a great lecturer, I wish I took him for Orgo I/II. Very easy class, lots of extra credit built in (poster for lab, exams, and 5 extra points out of 1000). He made orgo concepts easy to understand, highly recommend attending lecture even though the class is at 8 am.
I loved Tran for orgo lab. He explains simply and has a sassy sense of humor in lecture. He made the class easy and less of a nuisance than I expected. Legit studied for the exams the night before and did fine. Wouldn't have wanted to take anyone else for orgo lab. The class does take up a lot of time (12 hrs/week) but ultimately it was an Easy A.
Many of his lectures were embarrassingly incorrect. I mean his into to quantum lecture cited that the wrong experiments found the wrong outcomes. Overall his "teaching" for many physical phenomena was laughably incorrect, and laugh I did. The major upside is that his tests were also laughable and he has no control if you have a good TA.
Heard mixed reviews going into his class, but overall he's a great professor. Gets straight to the point when you ask him questions and is overall incredibly blunt and honest (which I think is what some people may interpret as him being rude). TAKE HIM OVER THE SUMMER (much more sympathetic to summer students, so curves hella). OFFICE HOURS HELP SM
I took Orgo II with him over the summer and really appreciated his teaching style. He kept lectures engaging by making connections with biochemistry - a course many of us are expecting to take next. He's blunt and extremely helpful with explaining concepts. It's clear he cares about his student's success beyond the classroom. Take his course!
HATES if you dont remember gen chem stuff, but if you ignore the tangents he's funny and has relatively easy exams
Honestly an awful professor. I don't mind his condescending remarks because I can easily let them roll off my shoulder, but he will treat you as if you know nothing. Exams are 85-90% conceptual multiple choice. He'll do reactions and mechanisms as test review and put one reaction/mechanism out of the 15 questions. Have to be a good test taker.
He's an amazing educator but has a strong personality. His teaching style is very direct and effective, but he can be a bit passive-aggressive when asked questions. Honestly, once you get past that, the lectures are pretty engaging and his passion shows. The exams were really difficult though imo, prepare well for them and do the extra credit.
Dr. Tran really care about his students and would strongly motivate them. He is always inspiring his students with his own experience and wish us to actually learn the content. Prepare for the exam and quizzes, and you will be fine.
Clearly very knowledgeable. Materials are organized, and it is easy to follow lectures. Learning objectives are helpful for exam prep. The platform that grades classwork is a bit finnicky, but I think it is an overall benefit to most students. Tran can be blunt at times and often seems to target students for random reasons.
This is a hard class but he presents the material in the most digestible and interesting way possible. He has a strong personality which can make him seem like a jerk but he tries his best to make the class engaging.
He is a great professor. His lectures are written out very clearly, and when he goes over new topics in class he takes his time to go through everything. It can be hard to like him because he can be very egotistical and he'll tell you how much of a genius he is and such but look past his personality and he's one of the best orgo professors.
Most lab TAs are good. 2 exams, 10% each. Everything else is lab, and lab reports are so simple. Exams are very mechanism based (esp the 2nd). Doesn't record lecture, but if you go, he gives you hints for the exams. Lab doesn't take the full time most of the time. Highly recommend.
Prof bases everything on his mood and ego. Uses online platform that doesn't correlate to lectures for HW, quizzes, and exams. Unlimited attempts for HW and 2 attempts for quiz/exam. Very rude to students with questions/doesn't clarify. Lectures are somewhat helpful, showing what you need to know but only the simplified version.
exams are more difficult than practice problems in class, but homework and quiz are fine. prof is condescending, but average at teaching. spends a lot of class time criticizing students
Attitude makes it fairly difficult to learn/feel passionate about the subject, making it harder than orgo 1 for me (diff prof). Slides/handwriting kind of messy. Tons of extra credit on tests & 2 attempts. Go to workshops, use learning objs. Get a good grade on first test (no rxns, grade booster), and don't let it make you think the course is easy.
