Good professor. He speaks very softly, but he definitely knows his stuff. His office hours are helpful, although they are usually very crowded. He posts lecture slides online - his lectures are pretty much right from his slides. 1st midterm very easy, 2nd midterm VERY hard.
This professor is one of the best. He definitely made the first quarter of organic chem much less stressful. Very clear, very prepared. The first midterm was easy, but the second midterm very hard. Best combination of easiness/helpfulness. Like Ternansky, but without the horrible, horrible feeling when you walk in the lecture room.
He's amazing. Briliant guy and definitely made ochem interesting. Very chill professor who's friendly and approachable during office hours. First midterm was easy, but second one was like the complete opposite. Overall, I would recommend him.
About the midterms: he says he wants to go easy on us at the get-go to ease us into o.chem., and after he engages us, he would like us to think a little harder, to learn how to approach problem-solving in a broader sense. Even bearing that in mind, the material was not at all unexpected; there was a time crunch, which he'll rectify.
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR. He has a very good understanding of the material. He is very helpful. He has a review session for each midterm & final, and for each one, he stays until the last student leaves. Cares so much about his students. Definitely recommend him.
Albizati's a bit of a dude. Very clear lectures and lecture notes, prepares students well for exams and more importantly, helps students understand O-Chem! the 2nd midterm was defo hard but when being graded on a curve that doesnt matter - everyone found it hard! Pity he won't be taking 140B next quarter. Defo would recommend him.
He really knows how to capture students' attentions. Lectures are not only captivating, but also very interactive. He always asks for volunteers to write the products of reactions and doesn't discourage students when they get it wrong. Too bad he's only teaching 140C next quarter, or else I would definitely take him again.
I was nervous going into ochem having heard horror stories. I actually found this class quite interesting, and professor Albizati was extremely helpful. His tests were extremely representative of his practice exams. If you know the practice exam, you will know the actual exam. Highly recommended.
Kim was THE BEST PROFESSOR that I have ever had. He was very prepared for classes & was always available if one needed to meet with him or ask questions. He's really easy-going and easy to talk to about anything. He'll have review sessions before all midterms & final and will stay there until the last one leaves. THIS PROF IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
A great man. He makes sure everyone gets OCHEM and actually makes it sound really easy. Compared to the other teachers he goes in depth on certain things he sees as important, hopefully those are the same as questions on the MCAT. Overall take Albizati if you want a class that will prepare for 140B
2 midterms (25% each) and a final (50%). No hw problems are assigned; we were told to do as many as possible. Lectures were very helpful, lecture notes are posted online. Prof is always willing to help. Practice exams are VERY similar in format to the exams. Class is curved. Do some probs, PRACTICE EXAMS, go to class, and it will be fine. =D
I wish I had this prof for 140A & B. He makes Ochem interesting/applicable to daily life and I actually get the concepts unlike with Nefzi where I had no idea what was going on!! I've been in his class only a week and of course my grade will depend on the time i put into studying, but if you want a prof that will help you do well, take this guy!
BEST PROF EVER! He made sure that everyone was always on the same page. His "audience participation time" allowed students to go up to the board and actually write out/complete mechanisms during lecture. Overall, he is an A+ professor. I'd definitely take him again!
Such a friendly guy. You understand the material just by listening to him and reading his notes. I never touched the book unless to try some practice problems. You really don't need to read it. Fist midterm is easy, second is slightly harder, final is a bit easy. Only problem is that he's soft spoken so you need to sit close to the front.
Prof Albizati is an excellent TEACHER! That's the difference. All the other professors are brilliant organic chemists, but they don't know how to convey what they know to the students in a way that is understandable. Prof Albizati explains organic chemistry in such a way that you are left thinking "why didn't anyone explain it like that before?!".
Contrary to everyone else, I feel like I didn't get a good foundation of ochem with him as the prof. He's a very nice person and seems like a great teacher - but I guess something just didn't click with me. A downside, he doesn't curve much, so beware.
wonderful professor. I don't know how I would have survived ochem without him as the professor. super clear, super helpful, and most of all, very nice and understandable teacher
One of the better professors. Very clear and very understandable, and quite humorous. You can easily get on his good side too if you give him diet cokes. :)
Albizati is an awesome prof. Very clear and helpful. He tries real hard for his students to understand the material. Overall great guy and prof
I love Albizati. True, he only lays down a foundation of OChem I; but, honestly, when will you ever need to know that much. The MCAT/DAT/whatever will never require you to know as much as Ternansky does. Albizati's lectures are crystal clear and engaging. I have no idea why idea why anyone would want to take any other OChem professor.
He is the BEST ochem professor at UCSD. Very helpful and makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Midterms and final were similar to the practice exams given. He also conducts review sessions before each exam. Just study and understand the lecture notes to get an A!
Albizati is great! He goes out of his way to make sure learn the material despite the fact that he still works in the field and only teaches part time. He holds a study session for every exam (he actually holds it, not the TA's) and he will stay as long as you need. All around great guy! Would recommend him 100%!
Lectures are clear + focus on material he will test on. Textbook reading is not super-important. Know reactions + concepts. Prof is super-popular, office hours get crowded.
Best organic chemistry professor at UCSD. He truly cared about his students and always encouraged us to do our best. Also, he explained everything very clearly and expected nothing more on tests than just what we learned in class (a.k.a. you don't need to use the book AT ALL - just lectures). Plus, you really do learn a lot from him!
Professor Albizati is just amazing; there's no other way to put it. His tests are incredibly fair, and the lecture slides he posts online are extremely helpful. He really cares about his students learning the material. Definitely one of the best professors I've had. I recommend him 100%.
SUCH AN AMAZING PROF!! you learn SO much in his class and it's not hard at all. He makes sure everyone knows the material. The practice exams are VERY similar to the real one. He goes out of his way to make sure that everyone know the what's on the test. He also knows many of us don't like ochem, so he sympathizes and make it very interesting.
He is the best in UCSD. His class is so interesting and his test is fair. He understands his students and has sense of humor. Sometimes, you can feel him as a friend. He make me love chemistry more and that If I would become a professor I was him. Get his class to make u believe that good professor is still out there, in our school.
Had Albizati for both 140A and 140C and he's THE BEST PROF at UCSD, hands down. He truly cares so much about students' learning. He posts his lecture slides as well as podcasts. He's always accessible to chat outside of class. exams are fair and his review sessions and practice exams are extremely helpful.
I had Kobayashi for 140B and hated Ochem until I took Albizati's course for C. I slowly started to understand how it all came together. He was an amazing professor and recommend him to anyone.
MUST TAKE!! he's one of those really rare professors that teaches the material clearly AND makes the class easy AND makes it extremely fun and interesting. You will learn so much in this class while getting an A!! He likes to tie in a lot of real life examples during lecture, making them very entertaining! Albizati=most caring, fun, easy prof
Albizati is a genuinely nice guy. He's really passionate about teaching even though he works in the industry. His tests are straightforward, no surprises and his practice tests are extremely helpful. He also posts lecture notes and does review sessions before exams. He made ochem very tolerable and interesting. I recommend him 100%.
i love this guy. GREAT LECTURER and his tests are really fair. his practice midterms are very representative of the actual midterms. makes ochem interesting and actually enjoyable. a genuine and really cool guy. MUST TAKE HIM =]
He's the best thing that ever happened to UCSD. It's kind of unbelieveable that the chem department were actually able to get him to teach. Albizati is the CEO of a pharmaceutical biotechnology company called Bioverdant. His teaching skills is just...legendary to say the least. Saying that he's an excellent professor would be an understatement.
Albizati is the most amazing professor I have EVER come across. His lectures are crystal clear, he's ALWAYS available to help & never condescending, and his class challenges you to do your best and work hard for the tests, all while enjoying the ride...yeah it's possible! Take him if you can, you will actually LEARN while enjoying Ochem.
omg! the best professor ever! he is sincere and helpful...what every professor should be. I used to hate ochem ALOT but now i kinda like it. take him! he's amazing!
He really cares, and that's rare in a professor.
Im taking this professor right now and the class is pretty difficult. 140C is supposed to be the easiest if not the most interesting out of the ochem series at ucsd. His exams are pretty difficult and the material is just not as interesting as before. I took Ternansky for 140A and i hear he takes it easy on the students in 140c. take him if possibl
I don't know if he'll be teaching next year because of budget cuts but I hope he does because he is a terrific professor. He has amazing online slides, succinct lectures, great & amicable personality, along with a passion for what he does. Very friendly guy and has very fair exams and curves well. Has practice tests that are same as his actual ones
This guy is amazing! I'm not a huge fan of organic chemistry but he makes me want to learn it! His lectures are always engaging and his tests are not too terrible. :)
What a way to finish college organic chemistry. Like any other professor he is extremely knowledgeable about the subject, but unlike many he just might be even better at communicating that knowledge. Very reasonable exams; his only concern is that you appreciate and learn o-chem. Favorite professor so far at UCSD, can't recommend him enough.
I can't stress enough what an amazing professor Albizati is! I wish I had him for A & B. Ochem isn't easy, but he makes it bearable and surprisingly fun to learn. Practice tests are representative of actual exams. Review sessions were helpful because he will answer pretty specific questions. There needs to be more professors like him at UCSD.
Albizati is the most entertaining professor you will ever take. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. His exams, though I don't like the format/style, is extremely fair/a bit on the easier side. Take advantage of this and DO NOT underestimate this class. I did and got screwed. Didn't bother to study 'til the end. His review sessions = godlike.
Albizati lives up to the hype. Take him. Even though I got a C in the class I can say I know alot more about ochem b/c of him. His tests are very fair and doable. I got a C not because of his inability to teach, but because of my lack of desire to study. For once the professor is not to blame. ;D
Dr. A is the bomb. Please take him for YOUR advantage. He is extremely helpful especially in office hours. He is so nice and if you study and read the book you will be good to go. He makes Chemistry Fun. I had such a great quarter because of him. TAKE HIM!!
AWESOME PROFESSOR. Really cares about the subject and about the students. Go to class and to review sessions. TAKE ALBIZATI FOR ORGANIC CHEMISTRY!
AMAZING. Best science prof I've had! I can't add anything new to what everyone else has said but you're really missing out if you don't take him. He's so nice, too. I wish he could teach all my science classes.
Absolutely without a doubt THE BEST professor I have ever had at ucsd. He is the first professor I've had who actually took the time to talk to me and really honestly cared and tried to help me, and I'm a fourth year. Plus the lectures are so entertaining and relevant. DO WHATEVER YOU MUST TO TAKE PROFESSOR ALBIZATI!! Love him!
Honestly, take this from an A student. His class is very pleasant and for the most part, he has very straightforward lectures, but I think this professor as a teacher is a little blown out of proportion and overrated. He's too simple of a lecturer to be considered the "best". Nothing special at all, but an enjoyable class. Perrin was better IMO.
He is a nice person, Loves to teach, very friendly, but please read the book before you go to class and do the homework every weekend, other wise you will not pass his class. Just do the homework, read the book and his lecture notes and attend his lectures, and you will have an A
great teacher, very straightforward and explains concepts clearly. he's a much more reasonable ochem teacher compared to others, but don't think this class is an easy A. you still have to attend lectures, read the book, and do all the work. His tests aren't as tough as other ochem teachers, but they're still very challenging.
This class is a joke in difficulty. Take him. If you think he's hard, give up on your science major and switch to something like music.
Pretty cool He is a super fan of basketball team Lakers. He makes the boring organic chemistry interesting.
best ochem professor ever. the material wasn't difficult but he still taught it really well. definitely take him!!!
Prof. Albizati is amazing!! His clear teaching has made O. chem extremely easy to understand. His tests are very straightforward, very similar to the practice exams. He is always willing to help, and even dedicates 3 days a week to hosting very useful office hours! Best professor ever!
AMAZING professor. Makes great outlines of the textbook that you only need it as a reference. Very helpful, approachable and makes O-chem enjoyable. Take him if you ever get the chance!!
seriously, albizati is the best prof at ucsd. he makes ochem SUPER clear and easy to understand. he gives you all of his lecture notes and everything is super easy to follow along with. his tests are really forgiving/fair. he doesn't try to torment you like some of the other professors do.
best prof i have ever met in UCSD
Truly awesome professor -- probably the best in the UCSD chemistry department. He's really clear, makes stuff easy to understand. And yeah, the tests aren't easy, but he teaches these fantastic review sessions a few days before the test where he goes over everything you need to know. Only downside: he's a Lakers fan.
Great teacher! one of the best i've had at UCSD. One of the first teachers I have had that has actually cared about his students. Takes the time to explain things to you, staying late after class and late at review sessions. The tests arent too difficult if you study. Tests were very fair.
Professor Albizati is the BEST OCHEM PROTESSOR I have ever had in UCSD. I wish I had him for chem 140A, too. I hated Ochem until I took him for 140C. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!!! Even though I didn't end up getting A in the class, I stiLL LOVE PROFESSOR ALBIZATI! Lecture is mandatory even though he post his lecture notes online...
Prof Albizati is quite possibly the best hard-sciences teacher that I've had at UCSD. Excellent, clear lectures. Extremely helpful office hours. Reasonable exams that actually test KNOWLEDGE, not memory. Also has a hilarious personality and is an all around great guy. He actually DOES make ochem a fun subject, and most importantly, you WILL learn.
Best professor I've had at UCSD thus far. Midterms and finals were quite representative of his lecture notes and practice exams. However, his challenge questions were as he said, a challenge. You will get an A if you attend every lecture and do every practice problem he assigns in the book. Very helpful office hours.
He has never taught the Chem 6 series before, but he is the O Chem teacher. He is very resourceful, a great teacher to ask questions. He makes Chemsitry really fun and enjoyable to learn. Of course you still have to study to pass his tests, but those were made up by the TAs. His lectures are podcasted, but still important to attend.
Albizatis a good guy but his style just didn't work for me. He teaches for people who read, memorize, then repeat. I like professors that use problems that are not identical to the book and people who just memorize steps do well while people who understand get stuck on an irrelevant "one-use" formulas. His lectures are average. I just expected more
Albizati is a great guy and a great prof for chem. His lectures are clear, albeit boring sometimes. His exams were reasonable until the final which was impossible. curve was generous. Often ends class early and offers reviews before each exam
I loved going to class every time. He is such a great professor and makes you appreciate ochem ALOT. I definitely recommend him. Study hard and you will get an A. He is the God of OCHEM.
Professor Albizati was the best Ochem professor I have ever had. He's crystal clear and concise with his lectures and what he expects from his students. It's also great he's not intimidating. He integrates ochem into the real world which enhances the learning. Do the hw and engage in class and you will earn a good grade! I definitely recommend him!
Best chem teacher I've ever had! He tells jokes and try to make the boring lectures interesting. unlike other ochem teachers, he puts the lectures online so that you can follow along instead of worry whether or not you can copy down all the stuff on the board and not learn a thing. Tests were similar to practice ones. best prof ever I'll miss him
Albizati is an extremely helpful teacher. You just have to not be afraid to ask him questions! His exams are fair, but you should do book problems to prepare for them.
Very clear explanations, helpful at office hours and after class, really wants you to learn. Takes a lot of work but you certainly learn a lot.
Definitely the best organic chemistry professor I have ever taken. He is very organized and really cares for his students. His exams are fair and are not SUPER difficult like most OChem profs. He wants his students to leave the class feeling that they actually learned something.
This was my second time taking Chem 140A and Albizati was fantastic!!! I had to drop it last quarter because I didn't understand what the professor was teaching but he made it super clear. Tests are difficult but doable if you study and put the work in. Posts a lot of notes and lecture outlines. Can seem somewhat standoffish but he's very nice!
I haven't had much experience with other ochem professors, but Albizati didn't seem too bad. He makes lectures somewhat interesting with his humor, quite interesting to talk to. Take his advice on how to study for the class and you will go far. His tests are difficult, but are doable if you took the time to study like how Albizati recommended.
He is the best organic chemistry professor I have taken at UCSD. He made lectures organized and concise. Really liked the focus on the big picture and not "trivia" that other organic chemistry professor seemed to obsess over. His tests were difficult but far from impossible if you studied. I felt like I learned a lot with him.
His class is straightforward. He tells you what you should know and he is always willing to help other students when he knows they are struggling. His tests generally test your knowledge on the CONCEPTS so learn them well!
great man. great professor. He cares a lot about you learning and is super clear about what you need to know for tests. Study a lot & do the practice tests- they are just like the actual tests and midterms.
He is a very chill guy but speaks very quietly so it's a must to sit in the front. He draws a lot of molecules on the board so taking good notes is important. Exams consist of easy and hard parts. Usually the avg is around 66. If you are about avg then it's a B. Lecture can be confusing if you don't study ahead. Must do ALL Hw problems to succeed.
Excellent Professor! He is genuinely interested in teaching. Take him!
He actually makes you love O-Chem instead of hate it with a burning passion. Very clear with the material and his exams (along with the usual synthesis, mechanisms, and reactions) tested on the conceptual parts of O-Chem - acidity and basicity, better leaving group, etc., which can give you all the points or none of them at all (no partial credit).
I loved this lab. Professor Albizati was very helpful and straightforward. The final was fair; he practically told you exactly what was going to be on it. Take this class over the regular lab (143A). Trust me.
I considered calling it quits for being premed until I took organic chemistry with Prof Albizati. Not only did I do really well in the series, he rekindled my passion for science and of course organic chemistry. Easily one of the best professors at UCSD. Put in the work and attend lecture and you will do good.
Brilliant and charismatic. Structured lectures with occasional jokes. Practice exams are similar to the actual exam so definitely do them. Id definitely attend class being that much of the material compiles on itself but if you consider yourself a natural in chemistry, this class will be a piece of cake. 100 and 97 on first two exams
140A: Very fair class. Go to lecture and try to learn (wants 75% of learning done in lecture). He is very clear and loves diet cokes! He makes organic chemistry relevant to everyone!! 143AH: This lab is doable with only 140A knowledge. Very independent class. Final is very fair! Going to miss taking classes with him! Eat lunch with him if possible.
One of my favorite professors so far! Averages for midterms were about 65 and 75. Homework is online, quick, and easy, quizzes generally easy, tests extremely fair but gets harder from midterm 1 to midterm 2 to final (what do you expect though?). Fair is the best word to describe him and his class. I love Professor Albizati.
I found the tests to be average in difficulty. The practice midterm helped a lot, however he may put a question or two on there that you would not expect (like how a pressure cooker works using what you have learned in regards to colligative properties). Fair tests, very accessible teacher. Would recommend.
He is very straightforward and it's very easy to follow along with the concepts. I don't see the point in using the textbook aside from reference (you should do the problems), his online notes are comprehensive. His midterms are exactly like the practice midterms so if you have that down no worries. Recommend him 100%
Practice Exams is EXACTLY like his exams--number order, type of qs,etc. He cares about his students and has multiple OH. Lectures are never boring and he chooses some great TAs. Usually he curves well, but this quarter my friends and I came in with an A before the final, butleft with a B+. Go check grade distribution to see where he's thinking.
Exams are fair and in the same format as practice exams. Learn the material well and practice solving mechanism problems - especially for the final. Dr. Albizati provides a lot of helpful resources: organized lecture notes, podcast, practice problems, extra office hours and review sessions. You'll do well if you put in the effort.
best prof ever. clear & accessible. he has terrific lecture notes that help a lot.
His lecture never helps, you don't need to understand, just blindly do the lab and recite everything on the practice final, because the final looks exactly the same. Your grade is completely determined by the final and the average is C+ I suspect, which is, in my opinion way to low for a pointless class like this.
Best chem lecturer ever
Professor Albizati cares a lot about his students and lectures really well. Do the book problems and put in the effort all quarter. The practice midterms and practice final definitely help, so do them!
Great lecturer. He goes at a pace that's conducive for note taking. Has powerpoint but also works problems on the chalkboard. His practice midterms are usually reflective of the actual midterms, so make sure to do them! He made concepts easy to understand. There are quizzes every other week in discussion.
Professor Albizati ruined my GPA. The class was not curved, so whatever grade you got on the midterms and final is essentially your final grade.
good professor that really cares about his students and how well they understand concepts. he explains difficult topics well and makes lecture interactive for students by having volunteers work out problems. midterms and final were representative of the practice midterms but were still challenging. there were quizzes every other week in section.
This is a hard class, but he makes it straight forward. Use the practice exams and go to multiple office hours- he goes over what will be on the exams before the test. I studied my butt off and even though it was 1.5 years between o chem 1 and 2 i still wound up with an A in the class. Expect to work hard because it's a hard class, but he was great
Great Professor. Grade is determined by lab notebook (basically just copying down the protocol, structure of chemicals, introduction, etc), your lab reports, final exam, and lab quizzes. The final is NOT word for word but similar to the practice exam. Take the honors class since it isn't much harder and has a better curve.
BEST OCHEM PROFESSOR EVERR.
He's highly overrated. He's somewhat approachable, you just have to remember that he wont answer questions during class time but you can see him after class. Doesn't really explain mechanisms in detail, teaches it more like a Biology class with memorizing reactions and a general mechanism. This makes it very hard to understand what's going on.
I had Dr. Albizati for Chem 143A and Chem 140C. For 143A he's very straightforward and helpful (only makes us learn important stuff, not BS that you forget after an exam). For Chem 140C he's similar in that he teaches us what we should know for the MCAT but then also teaches us the real-life applications. 140C isn't an easy class.
Professor Albizati was the best ochem professor I've had at UCSD. He was a clear lecturer, very approachable and encourages questions. You can tell he loves teaching and really cares for his students learning. Ochem is a touch subject but he made it bearable.
Albizati is Awesome!! Study your lecture notes well and as with any ochem class, do the practice problems and previous/practice exams! He teaches ochem in a very clear and fun manner and also applies it to the real world. Although he does give a general concept, you will need to learn how to apply it. Just recognize what is important and practice!
Dr. A is very fair in his exams and he is very clear in his explanations. His tests are fair and straightforward, he is challenging. While he is easier relative to the other profs, if you don't study early, you will get swamped with content. All topics rely on the previous chapter, so make sure you're understanding his logic. Has online notes.
Awesome Professor. Wish I was studying chem so I could take more of his classes.
Very fair professor and approachable. Problem is he's too approachable and his office hours are packed. Has a sense of humor and I really like him overall. His tests and lectures are straightforward, but tests ensure that you REALLY know the material. I would advise that you study for his exams a week and a half before the actual date.
Honestly, Dr. Albizati is by far the most careless professor I have ever had. He doesn't care about his students IN THE SLIGHTEST and is WAY overworked. He has 800 students a quarter and won't remember your name, face, or care to try. If you want to be treated like a number, go for it.
Mostly straightforward tests. If you love synthesis and product prediction, take him (product pred is 50% of the exams freebie points). Mech questions were a bit more confusing, but not impossible. Do the homework and try to solve as many problems as possible. Give yourself enough time to study. Cramming will never work for ochem.
I took Professor Albizati for ochem c for SS1. His lectures and tests are pretty straight forward and fair. No surprises on the exams since they are very much like the practice ones. He has online notes for his lectures too. Easy to talk to and answers questions promptly. Ochem is a hard subject, but if you study hard, you'll do fine in this class.
A fair professor, but a challenging class. Took him for SS2 and his lectures are pretty straightforward. His exams are pretty predict the product and synthesis heavy, so know your reagents well. Although his class was enjoyable, I would only recommend this class in the summer if it is the only class you are taking, as it's a time consuming class.
He is humorous and he explains materials clearly most of the time. Few times he might skip teaching a basic knowledge before moving to the next topic. I recommend Chem4 or equivalent right before the quarter. Sometimes things on homework are not taught in class. TA's quizzes are more frustrated than exams. I took chem4 so textbook is not necessary
I think Albizati is kinda overrated. I mean he is funny but sometimes he skips over basic knowledge but expects you to know how to do it on the homework. The material that he does teach is taught very well though. The TAs' quizzes were the hardest part of the class. Albizati doesn't have the best office hours nor does he extend them for finals.
Albizati is a great guy but, as a professor, he tends to rush through the material without thoroughly explaining each concept. His exams and quizzes were fair, yet sometimes covered material that wasn't covered in the homework or in class, but you'd know if you have taken a previous chemistry course in high school.
Great professor, accessible outside class. Office hours every Saturday at 8, holds midterm exam postmortem. Exams and quizzes are really easy. But he does skip over a lot of stuff in the book and some easy concepts, so get ready to read. He also incorporated some 6B/6C stuff in 6A.
I personally think he was kind of over-rated when I took him for CHEM 6A. He doesn't really teach you how to do the chemistry problems and gives a lot of background info instead. If you don't have a strong gen chem background before his class, you may have trouble. His midterms/quizzes/finals were fair though. He might just be better for o-chem.
He wants you to attend the lectures by providing basically nothing on the video podcast except the audio recording. Use blackboard mostly. I personally hate that especially when the weather is horrible. But, well, a good professor.
It's a challenging class, but Kim is a solid lecturer and his tests are representative of the lectures. Do as many homework problems as you have time to do, make study guides/flashcards and pay attention to the practice tests. The practice tests have the same format and difficulty as the actual exams. He's a funny dude too. Overall, great class.
This is my second time with him for organic chemistry. Its a hard subject but his tests are very fair. The textbook problems are useful for practice but focus on what he covers in class, his OCPOTDs and his practice exams.
Solid professor overall. Gives a lot of practice problems and very clear lecture notes. Class *technically* isn't mandatory, but he doesn't screencast his lectures (only audio is recorded) so I would recommend going. I don't particularly like organic chemistry, but he kept his lectures interesting and engaging.
Worst. Professor. I have ever. Taken. Don't let the "cool" basketball talk and tricks fool you. This professor is LAZY. He skips explaining mechanisms, and if he is feeling especially lazy, he will throw slides up and just explain what goes into the reactions. If you don't have a solid foundation (thankfully I DID!), you will sink in his class.
I don't see the hype around his lecture style. I mean, the guy talks like he has low confidence/energy, not much enthusiasm whatsoever. Also, why does he keeps writing on the blackboard and not use technology. It's super difficult to see what he is writing if the front rows are filled and you are forced to sit in the back. Ok professor overall.
retook since hoegar was too difficult to keep up with. Albizati is a Very FAIR tester. practice exams mirror the actual midterm and final exam. No hw so it was a little difficult to stay on pace. Must read chapter ahead before lecture or else youll be clueless. spends most of lecture going over practice problems
-Lectures are said to be optional but if you skip, you'll fail. -According to him, his ideal test scores are in the 60% average which he will curve to a B-. If you aren't comfortable failing both midterms, with only a chance at passing the class, don't take. -Teaches theoretically, but tests on practical knowledge. + is sometimes funny
From previous recs of him as a good prof, i decided to take him. as a gen chem prof, i would avoid. Theres 0 homework, no clickers, so grades are based on quizzes (got stuck with a whack ta) and rly hard exams, that dont reflect what he talks about. he is a lazy prof, unclear, and does like 3 practice problems per chapter. funny guy though!
I failed my first exam every in this class. His previous reviews were good so I took him for Chem 6B, but grades are only based on tests and quizzes. Your quiz score depends on which TA you get, the averages among the TAs are so different it's not even fair. I spent hours studying for this class and had many breakdowns over stressing over his final
Professor Albizati is honestly a great guy; he's pretty light-hearted and doesn't care much for how most other STEM classes work. No homework, no clicker questions, no active participation in lecture. However, there were quizzes in discussion (dependent on TA) which weren't hard either. His midterms and final are TOUGH. You HAVE to know your stuff.
Honestly I thought he was a very fair, cool guy. His lectures aren't mandatory but crucial for exams. His problems on tests reflect problems done in class as well as practice exams! Do these, and read over the chapters a little. His final practice exam was almost identical to the final exam!
He is probably the best organic chemistry professor I have had since I transferred to UCSD. He posts his notes that he lectures from on to triton Ed so that the students can get a head start on the material. He offers office hours on his free time on Saturdays, Again he is the best Ochem professor at UCSD and I highly recommend him.
Good lecturer
Here are the hard facts: his curve is EXTREMELY difficult; you need to get at least 80 points above average in order to get an A. Never posts grades until AFTER the final so you are left wondering all quarter. Grade based entirely on exams (which are not easy). He puts challenge questions on exams over topics he never covered in class. Overrated.
He is all hype; his curve makes it impossible to get an A (you need to be at least 80 points above average) and he never reveals his grading criteria (his TAs don't know either). Didn't show up for the final review session or the final exam. Exam averages are pretty low but he makes the exams consistently harder. Tells you to try every book problem
hardest curve of all the ochem profs (need at least 80 points above average for an A), very secretive about grading criteria. Gives very few practice problems, no extra credit, no HW, so grade based entirely on exams. Tells you to try every book problem but they are unrelated and not helpful for his class since his question style is so different.
as someone who put a lot of time and effort into this class: this professor is hard! I went to office hours every single week and did 2 hours of practice problems everyday but still couldn't get an A. He is impersonal at office hours and his exams are NOT "fair" as so many students like to lie about. They are hard; very little partial credit given
Don't take him! If you don't want your G.P.A going down! Beware!
average for the final was a 49% and the curve is very tough. He never reveals his grading scheme or updates grades on TritonEd. Only has weekend office hours and his exams are difficult. The only thing you are graded on is exams; no HW buffer, no extra credit no clickers. Don't trust the students who tell you he's "easy" or "fair" bc they got an A
Truly a great guy to have as you're professor or to know in general... his lectures are always funny, he gives away gift cards to students who volunteer, he even sometimes plays basketball with his lecture notes. He seemed to be a pretty good teacher, I can't speak personally bc I already took 2 years of chem. Take if you want fun lectures
Goes over conceptual things in lecture, rarely any calculations. Go to lecture because he writes on the board things that aren't in slides. Practice midterm was identical to the real one but practice final was a lot easier than the actual thing. Get ready to memorize useless molecular structures and pray you get a TA who doesn't make hard quizzes.
Professor Albizati likes to go over conceptual ideas in class and explains them very well. His lectures are funny and he grabs your attention in class. The TA makes their own quizzes so it can either be extremely difficult or incredibly easy. Homework is on Sapling so for every incorrect answer, your grade is reduced by 20%.
He cares for his students. His lectures are more conceptual and the homework is more practical with calculations. Albizati gives practice tests for both his midterm and final that are very similar in the content and difficulty of the actual exams. There are quizzes every other week in section but other than that section is not mandatory.
I never really understood Chem 40A or B, but I really start to get it with Albizati. He gives really good lectures and makes himself very accessible to students. Tests are quite hard though and the grading can be very difficult too. Overall my favorite Ochem professor at UCSD
I think his lecture is interesting but I am not sure that is the best way to learn. What worries me is that nobody knows the result of final. Also, he said there was a curve but nobody knows the curve.
Super funny and caring, good at explaining topics but monotonous voice. Goes over material very quickly, would not recommend him if it's your first time ever taking chemistry. Also your TA is important, they're the ones who write your quizzes. Midterm was easy, but I thought the final was way too hard.
One of my favorite professors. Could be funny but also got things done. He had to rush through the last chapter so that was rough, but the rest of the material he made straightforward and interesting. Only thing that could make this class overly stressful is a bad TA.
Lectures are pretty easy to understand, and Prof. Albizati is kind, passionate about the subject, and wants all of his students to learn. I thought that the midterm and final were very fair and not too hard. The Sapling homework is normally way harder than any exam.
Albizati is an overly approachable prof, his lectures are outstanding, and his tests are very fair. Do not skip class, because he swears by the chalkboard and that does not show on podcast. Holds Reviews where he basically answers everything. Average on exams are B-, so scoring over average is needed for A's. Graded on 2 Exams and 1 Final only.
Nobody knew about what they got in the final and we are unsure if there even was a curve but we don't know anything about it. Also test corrections and promised extra credit were nowhere to be found. Albizati is a nice guy, but you should read the book to understand some of these concepts in 6a. It's not necessary in 6b and 6c, but I read it in 6a
Amazing! I hate chem and ochem ended up being my fav class this quarter. He is straightforward and lets you know what he expects from you. He cuts out a lot of less important info & focuses on just the important stuff. He provides specific notes so you don't have to take many & his tests are very similar to his practice tests. Even his TAs are good
One of the best organic chemistry professors out there. Explains well, and makes the class workload manageable.
Albizati's a great professor. He explains everything really well and his actual tests are the same difficulty as his practice test, so if you can do the pract ice test with no proble, you'll ace the exams!
He may be a decent professor for OChem but hes really overrated as a Gen Chem professor. Additionally, when all other professors were curving courses or adjusting grade scales to benefit students, Albizati did the opposite. He pretends like hes a cool chill professor but its a facade. I recommend avoid taking him for the 6 series.
The lectures are really amazing and interesting. But since he gives little homework, please do the textbook problems to make sure that you really understand the materials.
Super duper confusing and curved down for the quarter when grades are supposed to help students during corona time
Pro: Availability; approachable, memorization type class. Con: I dropped the class because he was trying to make me memorize organic chemistry. I was initially confused on the mechanics (hows and whys) of organic chemistry as a result. This is NOT how you learn. Just to give this some credibility: I got all A's in the CHEM6H and 140 series.
Took him for 40B, I took Perrin for 40A and was scarred but Albizati definitely made ochem enjoyable and he's definitely really passionate and good at teaching it. His tests were challenging but it was mostly fair as the style was similar to the practice exams he gives. His notes are neat, clear, and concise. Make sure to do textbook practice!
Ochem is difficult for most people, but Dr. Albizati makes it enjoyable to study. Exams are hard, but doable. His practice tests are identical to the real thing. First 3/4 of class are pretty easy and the last quarter is much more difficult, so keep up with material. No EC. No curve.
Literally such a good professor. He is so helpful both in and out of class. Even though the only things that count for grades are the midterms and the final, he gives solid help on those and the practice tests are really similar to the real thing too. 10/10 prof and would take over and over again.
(I took him in person.) I love this guy. Favorite prof at UCSD so far. He really loves chemistry and it shows. This class felt like a breeze with how well he explains concepts. Lectures aren't mandatory, but I'd highly suggest going because he brings the audience in to participate in hands-on questions. Also he plays paper basketball during class.
Professor Albizati was a great professor for my first chemistry class at a university. I wish I could have taken my whole chemistry series with him. He did so many examples in class that helped a lot. He made it simple.
Very good professor, does not throw any curve balls and tests are extremely fair
Albizati was great. Good lectures and reasonable exams. I feel like I've learned SO MUCH. It helped me a lot to read the textbook b4 class like he recommends, but sometimes the textbook goes more in depth and that can be annoying. The tests were fair, but difficult. He gives practice exams that are similar. but yeah that final was kinda hard!!
Albizati is an extremely chill teacher. His lectures don't facilitate note-taking, so you're going to have to listen really well and take good notes in order to get a solid understanding of the concepts of this class. He doesn't give HW, and he gives out his test format and basically the questions he's going to ask before the tests.
I ended up dropping this class because I wasn't in a position to succeed given my personal circumstances. But what I gathered is Albizati is a good lecturer, he's very caring and will go above and beyond to help students succeed. His practice exams are practically identical to the real thing. I didn't love him for 6A but I think he's good for 40A.
Professor Albizati is a very knowledgeable and caring professor, and I really enjoyed his class. He assigns no homework so practicing is all up to you. The exams are very difficult (but fair) and graded very harshly. Your entire grade is based on points from exams. Pay attention to the practice exams because they're very similar to actual exams.
Albizati is probably the best ochem professor u would ever want for. He's chill and knowledgeable. Does not assign HW but requires you to do the problem from the textbook. Such a great lecturer and give out the exam question's type before the exam which is quite similar to his practice.
Really enjoyed organic chemistry with Albizati! Tests are pretty straightforward if you know how to do the practice exams and textbook practice. Albizati teaches you everything that you need to know, and really distills the important info from all of the book's dense writing. Very approachable and available outside of class.
Great professor, can make lectures interesting and gets things done. Weekly sapling homework actually does promote learning and isnt just busy work. Tests are moderately difficult but its chem so.... attend lectures and supplement learning with kahn academy and its fine
I have a ton of complaints. Cause: Covid? Idk but for a basic chem course, the class average is about a D+. This class's midterms are extremely vague and the answer keys to the practices are incorrect. He doesn't tell you your grade so you cannot know what the practice and his final is worth 40 percent of your grade. There is more but I can't type.
Idk what people are on but he is a terrible lecturer. Maybe cause of covid but his lectures are not good for notes and he doesn't actually speak well either. His tests are 10x more intense than his lectures and he doesn't advise to read the book, although the book didn't even help sometimes. Answer keys wrong and didn't talk to TA's. Don't take.
Albizati is the best ochem professor I've had at UCSD. He organizes the material in a way that's easy to follow and makes it clear what he expects you to know for exams. He also gives daily practice problems that are really helpful. He only grades based on exams, so doing the practice problems really helps.
Prof Kim explains concepts quite well. He provided prerecorded lectures which makes taking notes easy and you could skip classes if you watched those. However, his examinations were quite difficult. Doing the practise exams really helped as the actual ones followed a pretty similar format. He really cares for his students.
He teaches well. However, I think final exam logistics is very poorly handled. Neither does he give you a final exam answer key nor does he take any regrade requests for it. The TAs sometimes give little to no feedback for the points taken off. The final is mostly 50% of the total which means you will have no say for that much of your grade.
His lectures are very concise and easy to follow, and his TAs give good discussion sessions. However, all of your grade depends on three exams, so there is no margin of error. Also, his lectures are sometimes too simplified, so if you want to take 40B and C, then you should read the textbook yourself.
He is a good professor. He explains concepts very well. I would take him again. I feel this quarter I learnt a lot. The difficulty of the exams is necessary for future ochem classes. They are rigorous and thought provoking which test your knowledge as well as application skills of the subject matter. Study critically and regularly in his class.
Good professor, I would recommend him. The practice tests he gives are identical in structure and question type to the actual tests. He was a good professor, however I felt like I had to watch his old recorded lectures a couple times to understand concepts. The only gripe I had was that he would not allow us to request regrades for the final.
Though Professor's Albizati's class was perhaps the definition of one where you've really got to work hard, his practice exams mean that if you put in the work you at least know you're going to do decently. Class was entirely exam centric though practice exams were almost carbon copies of the tests. Solid choice.
I have so many regrets taking this class with this professor. Do you want a professor that teaches all the important stuff right before the exam? Well this ones for you then... Literally did not go over the major matertials needed on the midterm till the week of the exam. Absolute bull.
Prof. Albizati gives very clear and concise lectures. He also provides notes and slide so that we do not need to spend so much time on the textbook. The exams are very fair as they resemble the practice exams. However, his lectures are sometimes too simplified (some topics are skipped).
Great professor! I hate organic chemistry, and it's still hard, but he actually makes it interesting. No homework, but he posts a question every day - make sure to do them. Do the practice exams! The actual exams are almost identical. I got by without the textbook, relied on my own notes and the lecture slides instead. Practice, practice, practice!
I had him for 40A and 40B. 40B is much more difficult than 40A. But just like with 40A, if you keep up with the lectures, do the practice problems and questions, and be consistent with studying, you should be alright. He is a great professor who genuinely loves chemistry and tries to make it enjoyable and learnable for those who find it difficult.
Do your best. The material speeds by pretty fast, but we still ended up behind. HW due dates are close together, so don't slack off on that. Grading is determined by TAs' criteria, but they should be generally similar. 2 hard free-response midterms, so do the practice exams. Good luck!
Stellar professor with an insane handle on chemistry. Truly cares for students, and the exams are exactly as clear as he says they will be, just make sure you keep up because you will drop behind.
Great professor and lecturer and made ochem fun and easy to understand. Cares about his students. Loves diet coke.
Explains ochem in a way that's easy to understand. His practice tests are very similar to actual exams, so you know what to expect. The class isn't easy, but he's there to answer any questions. Overall, cool guy - you can tell he cares about students and is willing to speak with you outside of class about research, etc.
A Lakers fan, which already makes him top-tier. But other than that, he's a great professor with a clear understanding of everything. Lectures are concise. Tests are fine as long as you study (start a week before the test). Tests are misgraded often but fixed with regrades. Ochem is obviously hard but study a lot and you're fine. Really good curve.
Professor Albizati was great! His exams are all curved but he gives practice midterms that are like the real midterms and finals. DO THESE! Discussion is not required and attendance at lectures isn't either but I recommend you go because it helps a lot. Office hours are right after class. Only graded on 2 midterms,1 final, and homework.
His lectures are engaging and he has a knack for explaining complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand. He also has a great sense of humor and is always cracking good jokes, which helps to make the material more enjoyable. He is fair when it comes to exams.
Prof. Albizati was overall a good professor for ochem. He had good lectures and went at a pretty reasonable pace which was nice. His practice exams were very helpful as were the grading feedback on homeworks. He also had helpful office hours online which made them more accessible.
If only I took the ochem series here than at my C.C! Prof. Kim made the topics of ochem so easy to understand. He does practice problems in lecture and goes over it to make sure we understood how to get to the product. He is a chill professor and is so easy to talk too! Highly recommend taking him!
he is the best! so knowledgeable, taught me 40a so well as he is an extremely good lecturer. gives lots of examples and explains hard content very clearly. i took 40a during a summer session (5 weeks instead of 10) and i still learned all the content well because of him. cares deeply for his students, and is a great guy.
Test were very difficult but it is curved heavily. You will also never catch him putting a single molecule of Acyl Halides in his body. Jokes aside, He was very approachable during office hours and explained organic chemistry mechanisms with great clarity.
Exams were difficult, but were heavily curved. Entire grade was midterms and final, but practice exams were very indicative of the actual exam content. Great lecturer, never once caught him putting acyl halides in his body. 5/5
The class was test heavy and the exams were very difficult. However, the grades were curved heavily. You will also never catch him putting Acyl Halides in his body. Jokes aside, Albizati was very approachable during his office hours and explained organic chemistry mechanism with great clarity.
He is very nice out of all Ochem professors, he acts aggressive but he's actually really understanding of the class's ability. So he has quite a nice grading system worked out. I would definitely recommend him for the chem41 series!
Albizati was a great professor and really cared about teaching ochem. Test were super fair, since he also gave us a practice final and midterm, which had a similar format to real thing. The class though is just graded by 2 midterms, 1 final. He gives generous curves (average becomes a B-). Lectures also provided practice problems to help prepare.
Took this introductory chem class with him for my GE. He is a chill professor, explains concepts pretty well, and curves the class by the end. Also I heard he's good for Ochem :) (CHEM 40A?)
Professor Albizati was great! Lecture isn't mandatory, but he goes over example problems in class, which is helpful. He also gives practice exams which are very similar to the actual tests, so I would highly recommend doing those.
Professor Albizati is good at explaining concepts well and providing lots of helpful practice both in lecture and to do on your own time. Midterm and Final is worth most of your grade but he provides practice exams with answer keys that are the same format as the actual tests. He also seems to care a lot about the students and is very chill.
Professor Albizati is a fantastic professor. He lectures clearly and creates opportunities outside of class to connect with students. His grading is very test heavy but he does provide practice tests very similar in format to the real final, but I will say nowhere near the same difficulty. However, he does curve and I feel he prepared me for 40a.
Best professor for Ochem. Before the exams he would go through the questions for the class to know what to expect. Practice midterms exactly like exams. Just attend class and do practice problems at home. Ochem is tough but he makes it easier.
Dr. Albizati was an amazing professor! His lectures make the material easy to understand and he provides a lot of helpful practice. He is also very funny and chill, so would highly recommend taking his classes.
Dr. Kim was an amazing professor. All of his exam material is based on the lectures. The book given in the modules is basically for prereading the material and practice. You do not have to read the book to do well in this class. Just pay attention during the lecture, do the take-home practice problems given, study well, and you will do well.
Amazing professor. My favorite professor to teach chemistry and its for my worst feared course 40B. The most caring person, and makes everything very easy to understand. Humorous, and very unintimidating when it comes to questions. Everything is based off of lecture, not really textbook. Practice exams are very very similar to the exams. A+ teacher
I have Professor Albizati for my ochem series and HE IS THE GOAT!!! So glad I decided to skip 6C last spring and began the 40 series with him. The exams are fair and similar to practice exams. He also curves the class A LOT (in 40A a 79 is around an A-) as he wants the class average to be around B-. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!!
Professor Albizati is easily the best chemistry professor at UCSD. His lectures are all very easy to follow and include examples for every mechanism that is taught. His exams are a fair assessment of lecture material and the practice exams he provides are extremely similar to the actual exams. Couldn't have asked for a better professor.
Clear lectures, fair exams, good curve. One of my favorite professors at UCSD. Lectures are clear and organized, and exams are VERY similar to the practice ones he provides. Very open about course policy and clearly wants students to do well. If you pay attention in lecture, do the hw, and read a bit, you will do well.
Best chemistry professor for the gen chem series Ive had so far, makes chemistry understandable and you know what to expect for exams. As long as you put in the effort you should do well!
Super chill professor, usually teaches at night since he works outside of teaching. Encourages students to reach out outside of class—loved Arteazen nights! His tests are super reasonable; just review the study guide early, and you'll be good.
He is nice, but this class was a nightmare.I felt the lectures were all over the page.Goes at lightning speed, and most everyone just stepped out from Chem 40A, so GOOD LUCK.Also, he told us that we are his side gig, so kinda weird.Tests are HARD.Hw inconsistently graded for correctness, then not and just completion and syllabus is 1/2 a page...
hard exams, generous curve, straightforward, no nonsense lectures
Took this class for an easy GE, wish I hadn't. Kim doesn't communicate well and rushes through lectures without explaining. His TA writes the 3 quizzes, he has no clue what's on them, so only God knows how to prepare for them. The final that Kim wrote was easier than the quizzes, but overall, with no study guide you must resort to praying for hope.
I took this class as a non-STEM major for a GE--which is the same for everyone in the class, it isn't for stem majors--and it was bad. Kim doesn't cover content well, rushing through the slides and never fully explaining under the guise of being "easy to understand". Also, there are no study guides and the midterms/final are nothing like lecture.
3 Quiz with one right before the final, 2 best ones matter. HW are easy but time consuming. Do use the discussion slides well to prepare the quiz cuz TA made them.
Took his class during summer session 1, honestly was not bad. the final grade gets curved very heavily - focus studying from the textbook and do all the problems that relate to the final exam / archive questions. Overall, not a bad experience taking chem with albizati.
Great prof. Your grade is basically 2 midterms and a final, but all the exams are very similar to the practice exams provided. TAs are super helpful for the weekly hw assignments. The final is pretty difficult compared to the midterms, so make sure to start studying early for it.
Albizati is great. Super funny and lectures were entertaining. Midterms were kind of brutal since there didn't feel like enough time but the exams were relatively similar to the practice. Drill practice problems and you will do well in the class. Also go to discussions as they go over the problem sets which can help a lot
super easy, you don't have to study, no trick questions on exams, very generous curve; he gives practice problems throughout lecture, so you know what you're doing by the end of it
Great lectures with practice problems throughout to help solidify concepts. Discussion worksheets and practice exams for both midterms and final were given and were helpful, but of course, not identical. Overall, not too hard, especially if you have a good chem background going into it.
Engaging lecturer, but he doesn't talk loud. He doesn't cover everything from textbook in lecture, but exams only based off lecture content. Does useful practice questions in lecture. HW, unlimited tries & no wrong answer penalty, is slightly harder if you don't read textbook. 80% of grade is based off 2 midterms + 1 final, all free response
