Dr. Blank has a good sense of humour and makes insightful comments concerning cultural critique, this class is worth taking.

his lectures are funny, insighfull and I always left his class with a smile. The grading is a little questionable but still well worth taking his class.

What a hilarious guy!If anyone can possibly make Wordsworth interesting, it is this guy.His lectures are ok to skip once in a while--you don't miss all that much, but they are so entertaining that you WANT to go to class!

Although I took this professor's course almost 16 years ago, he still remains my favorite prof ever - fair, stimulating and even back then ( if you like European soccer chic) muy caliente! Good to see you are still alive and kicking, Dr. Blank!

I have been to three post-secondary schools and this was the best professor I have ever had........by a long shot. He is as quick whitted as he was intelligent. Everyone should take at least one course by this man

I see nothing but good here...he is engaging, genuine, and has an easy nature. I can bank on a pleasant, informative class every time. Tests are fair, and assignments are few and managable. No red flags for this class whatsoever.

Blank's class is great. He is hilarious. The only prof to make you want to go to an 8:30! He marks very fairly and explains exactly what you want. The only reason for doing poorly is if you are too conceited to accept his suggestions (which are pretty good). Take his class.

A brutal marker! I did learn from this prof, but paid a steep price. Lost marks because the essay title was in bold font(for example). He has some good points, but his ego has usurped his credibility. His marking is off-the-map artibtrary. There are too many great profs at UVic -Run, don't walk!

I see pop culture so much differently now, opened my eyes. great assignments. liked group work. Marks hard but everyone one else on campus is slack, but if you take the effort to revise and revise, you will be fine. got more out of this course than any other, ever.

for 207 : the class was fun, easy, and covered really basic course material. certainly worth taking.

My favourite English prof at UVic. Take his course. His "green sheet" will likely strengthen your writing.

He is the funniest professor on campus. I'd recommend his courses to anyone. The readings aren't hard to do on the bus ride in and the assignments are short. Pay attention to the green sheet or you will suffer. Check out his book, "Rant,"--it's quite the read.

I learned more about literature, writing, life, and the trees outside than I thought possible, especially at 8:30 in the morning. Best prof. High standards. Makes you write until u are right.

Wicked proff...great teaching style,very down to earth, easy to listen to, and very helpful...he maybe getting up there in age, but it wouldnt matter, hes very attractive...definite incentive for making the 830 classes !

Great teacher! He's funny and keeps your attention for an 830 class. As for the content he presents the material in a fun way and it sticks with you. He really stresses writing and his quirk sheet helps with refining your writing skills. If you have the opportunity, take a class with him.

The cry baby below must have got a bad mark--a know it all. This is the ONLY course that actually improved my writing and kept me inspired. This was my last term, and my 2nd course with Blanky. My favorite prof, easily.

He is an exceptionally hard marker. Expect AT LEAST 1/2 a grade to a grade below what you expect. It's rumored that he's a leading proponent of "grade inflation" measures. If you can live with that, his lectures are humorous, and the workload is light to reasonable. Unless your GPA is of prime importance, I recommend this course highly.

The person below my have got a bad mark and be out of their mind. This course changed my writing and thinking more than ANY other course I have taken. The peer editing and writing was cool.

Class was the best at UVIC (I'm grading this month!!); your learn to read and think, and the first time I had a chance to really improve writing, which would not have happened with out the peer editing process. Funny and smart guy, and strange humour.

He bites the heads of chickens in the classroom, but he does it with style. Easily the VERY best prof I've ever had, despite this. Great lectures, great assignments, makes you learn how to write. Hard marker man.

A great teacher. You learn to write effectively and he challenges you to really think and delve deeper into the material. Highly recommend his classes.

I love this professor! He has a great sense of humor, considers all comments made in class, and knows everything about Romanticism you could ever hope to learn. I found him to be a very fair marker, not easy by any means, but definitely fair. I take his class again any day!

This class was great. Very relaxing environment, free-flowing ideas, great stories. This is how subjects SHOULD be taught at Universities, with friendliness and CONSTRUCTIVE criticism; instead of being rushed to write out crap just for the marks and you don't learn anything. Highly Recommend, awesome teacher and a great class!

Wonderful guy! understands the pressures and deadlines of writing countless essays in University and structures his classes around helping his students learn how to slow down and properly analyze their work and writing - I loved this class and highly recommend!

Like the class way too much. got into complexity and pulled it around. these poets are smart, he showed us why. he made literary crit. important. get reading the material closely, every detail, yet got the big picture too. hard marker. you have to learn to write or else. you won't get a high mark.

Really entertaining prof and knows what he's talking about, but makes way too many justin bieber/facebook jokes. Papers were easy, nobody read the novels, and it only comes down to if you go to tutorials. I wish it had been more challenging.

Absolutely brilliant prof. Kept every lecture interesting, had guest speakers come in, and gave great advice on writing papers. Course was a lot of work, but I would highly recommend him as a prof.

I loved this prof, personally. Majority of the people in ENGL147 are just there to fill a university requirement, so obviously that's going to play a role in whether or not people enjoy the course. However, I liked the lectures-- Blank was very witty and cynical, which was entertaining. He knew what he was talking about. Great prof.

Very charismatic and interesting lecturer. Easy to pay attention to; take notes in class they help a lot and it makes the time pass by.Books are not the most interesting but lectures and tutorials are.

Wasn't sure about him at first, but warmed up to him. They way he 'dummed' down some of the works at first made lectures feel useless but was very good at tying things together in the second half of the course. He's quite funny, definitely caters to the part of the class who are just taking it for the academic reading and writing requirement though

He is so funny and engaging!I always looked foward to go to his class. His class is very entertaning. Made literature very interesting. Exam can be a bit vauge..but it's not hard as long as you do the readings.

Dr. Blank is very quirky. He's funny, but not as funny as he thinks. The stuff (the "dead male poets") that he teaches is interesting and he is able to spout off a lot of biographical, historical, and contextual information. Stickler on written work, but all assignments are short and then peer reviewed. Your writing will improve.

Found the subjects very interesting as Dr. Blank did an excellent job in relation to their roles on past and present societies. However, I found the assignments to be marked on a very high scale by the TA's. I took another English class during this semester and received a B, and received a C in this class. If you decide to take it, do the readings

Although I liked Dr. Blank as a lecturer, it was a very TA-directed class and I found that his expectations and my TA's weren't on the same page. Still though, funny guy, and helps when you need it. He has a very dry sense of humor though, so don't take it TO personally.

Blank is a really tough grader, as you've probably gathered already. It just depends on if you care for the class. As an english major, I am forever grateful for the standard of writing he has raised to me from his grading and feedback. I'm much better now. His lectures start entertaining but you will find he repeats anecdotes often. Great prof.

Kim is a great guy that has an encyclopedic knowledge of literature. Engaging lectures if you're genuinely interested in lit, probably drab if you're taking 147 as a required course. As noted the markers are pretty lame and difficult to work with, but if you're more concerned with developing an understanding for literature, Dr. Blank is the best!

I'm graduating at last. looking back, this was the best course ever taken--or maybe the prof was the best. so smart, thorough, funny, and serious at the right time. turned me into an English major. taught us how to write--it counted lots. critical approaches important. reads poetry deeper, more complex that every experienced. Bye bye uvic!!!

Great prof. Super super smart, goes off on amusing tangents and knows the material inside and out. Very knowledgeable and very tough grader. Go to class- not mandatory but his insight makes the material much easier to understand and write about.

Amazing Prof! Super inspiring and engaging. A bit of a tough grader, but really helps your writing and his assignments are designed to ensure you are handing in your best draft. Best English prof I've had yet; inspired me to switch my English minor to a double major. My writing has benefited so much from this course! Wish he taught more upper level

3rd class with Blank. Fantastic lectures. No PowerPoint or that kind of stuff. listen and takes notes. best classes I had a UVic by far. graduating this term.

Blank is one of the most interesting profs I've ever had. He's ridiculously smart and just starts talking, but his lectures are super interesting. He's weird and makes jokes all the time and he made a 9:30 class doable. Homework wise this course is pretty light, only 3 papers of short length (max I wrote was 1250). Definitely recommend.

Amazing lecturer.

Even though I'm a mark-hound, I would still 100% recommend this course. Super intriguing lectures, great course design, and thought-provoking content. He is a tough marker, but always for a clear and fair reason. Don't get lazy on your editing, LEARN the content - don't just read it, and you'll leave with an A and some valuable life lessons, too.

3rd course with Blank. Best. Ever. Learned more about lit, life, and writing than anyone else.

Blank is a super funny guy who loves what he lectures about. Didn't give much class time to assignment or exam criteria but the handouts were really clear, just remember when things are due because he will NOT remind you. Totally recommend taking a class with him if you can, just for the experience.

Professor Blank is an entertaining lecturer, but the class can be a bit draggy at times. The workload is manageable, and unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
