Great prof. Very helpful, and easy to understand, exams aren't too hard if you study at all. And she's a beauty to behold; cute freckles, big blue eyes, nice smile, soft voice, the list goes on. Take her class if you can, not just to have something pretty to look at but also because she's an amazing prof.
Haha, this is the first time I've ever had a crush on my teacher. :P
She keeps it simple and gives great examples which help committ the info to memory. ...semantic memory...
By far the best Prof I ever had. She can turn the most boring material into very interesting facts. Never seen such a big turn-up of students to an 8:30am class. All you need to get an A is go to class and read the slides..if you need more help, she will go out of her way for you. We def. need more young and caring Profs like Kim..THANK YOU!!
Class very easy, NEVER use the textbook. Prof friendly but confusing on topics she was not very familiar with and therefore her lectures could get a bit confusing and annoying, but take the class was SUPER easy!! Gave wrong information in reference to certain forensic topics. Answer according to what she says to get the mark. Pretty face.
Very good teacher. Insightful and pleasing appearance
Too much into herself/"big headed".
Basically, the only reason that I actually came to class was because she is a FOX. The course is very interesting and she is a decent prof, still very young and not as much as an expert as other older psych profs..but all in all a decent prof. Probably the hottest at Carleton. rawr.
One of the best profs I've had. Very interesting lectures, the topic is a little tough to get but really tries to make sure everyone understands. Has optional grade raising assignments, and if you do poorly on the midterm she will let you do make up assignments. Always available for extra help. Tests only from the lectures. Great prof!!
Kim has been my favorite prof at Carleton thus far. I don't know what people are talking about that she doesn't know her stuff because she definitely does. She is very nice, open and helpful when answering questions, and always wanted to make sure she was clear in her answers. Addiction has some harder stuff, but she makes things easy to learn!
Great Prof, very professional and extremely approachable. Attend class and keep up with readings and it's an easy A
Great prof! Extremely approachable! She makes the class really interesting and relevant! All examination material is from lectures, so attend them!
She is a great educator. Very enthusiastic and helpful! I would definitely take her class again even though my program doesn't call for it.
Great Prof- Really interesting, always smiling and energenic. Goes out of her way to help students. Exams and midterms are fair- just read the lectures and pages in the text she assigns, although the text isn't heavily relied on. Need more profs like Kim!
She is a great prof. She knows what she is talking about. I am unsure how some people seem to think she is conceited. On a side not, she is also the most attractive prof I have ever had. She is open to questions and shows videos whenever relevant and available. Tests are easy to average and the text was a waste of dollars!
Great prof, tries her best to answer your questions; knows how to accept her mistakes. On the negative side, she cares too much about marks, as if success is based on high marks. Education should be more than that.
Kim set a whole new bar for me on what a teacher could offer. Intelligent, welcoming, clear, encouraging, and personable are just a few words to describe this teacher. If you let yourself relax and immerse in her course, you will do exceptionally well. Take her course, and you may just find yourself pursuing Neuroscience, like I did.
Kim is definitely one of the best professors I have ever had. I'm entering into my 4th year of post-secondary schooling and she is by far my top prof. Not only are her lectures fun and easy to follow along with, she is also very approachable and will try everything she can to help out her students.
Fun and make a clear cut for materials!!!AWSOME
Entertaining, made it slightly easier to stay awake at 830 lectures. Mixes things up sometimes but if your paying attention it shouldn't matter.
She is an amazing professor, wanted to take more of her classes, but im not a psyc student so I cant, very sad. I may show up just for the heck of it. yes Im a geek!
Extremely nice and helpful. Very smart
Kim is such a great prof. She is funny, very interesting, and she knows her stuff. You do have to study a lot for the exams though, but I've learned a lot in her class.
the classes were fun, the marking was extremely tough. i put a lot of effort in studying for the midterm, and doing my assignment while following the rubric and still had low marks.. i dont think the marking was fair at all
Amazing professor! She's really into what she's teaching and is extremely funny. Go to her class, it's a) worth it because she's fun and the content is interesting and b) she puts blanks in her notes. Her notes are ridiculously well organized and extremely helpful. It's a lot of content but the final is not cumulative and easy if you study:)
Definitely one of my favourite professors! She's extremely funny and witty, but she also knows exactly what she's talking about, and doesn't make it confusing. Go to class, take notes and pay attention and you'll do great! Study her powerpoint slides rather than the textbook and you'll be set!
She was honestly the best prof I've ever had!! So fun, easy going, clear!! Her notes were excellent! If you get the chance, TAKE HER CLASSES! Excellent prof!!!!! :) I LOVED going to her classes!!!
Awesome proff! Clear, concise, and with a great sense of humour. She does everything she can to help you succeed. I will take another class with her any chance I get. (2 exams M/C-finished with an A+)
Kim is a good prof. She knows what she's doing. Pay Attention in class and you will do fine. Do not pay attention to her tooo much because that can drift you away from whats important getting that A++.
I've taken 3 classes with Kim so far, she is hands down the best professor I've ever had. Her lectures are inspiring and are what original made me passionate about Neuroscience. She's always willing to go the extra mile for her students, I highly recommend taking a class with her if you have the chance.
I really enjoyed watching the lectures. She related the info we were learning about to everyday situations that we as students would be interested in. She had a very modern feel in her teaching. I'm not usually interested in sciences, but the way she taught everything actually made me very intrigued to learn more. Would take another class for sure.
An amazing lecturer. However she wants you to know the in and out of everything she says and does. Even the stuff she is thinking you are suppose to know.If you take her, don't take CUOL. Attend class. O and she is hot.
Kim is hands down my favorite prof this semester. She's extremely clear in her teaching style. That, coupled with her quick sense of humor really brings the subject to life. I was dreading this class, but now I genuinely look forward to it. If you have a chance to take a class with Kim, do so. You won't regret it.
Great personality, very nice. Don't like the midterms, answers and marking is not coherent with biology or biochemistry.
Very good prof- lectures are clear and interesting. Her exams are fair and straight forward (a lot of questions from articles)....awesome prof
Best prof ever! She's funny, easy to talk to, and the topics we go into are really interesting. Great class!
Kim is passionately interested in neuroscience, entertaining, clear and has a great sense of humor. Excellent presenter, really encourages class participation. But be prepared - you MUST attend class, and you MUST take notes and study. Her exams are hard but fair. Best prof I've had at Carleton so far.
Great professor! Very clear and easy to talk to, lectures are extremely interesting. However, don't take this as an "easy credit course"- it isn't. She wants you to learn the material, which is what a good prof does, and you will if you study and go to class.
I have Kim for two classes this semester and she is absolutely the best prof I've ever had. Funny, makes things interesting and is approachable. She definitely knows her stuff. I highly recommend going to class, her midterms are tough but fair and you actually learn the material. She is the reason I fell in love with neuroscience!
LOVED her as a prof. dedicated to what she teaches and her tough midterms emphasize the importance of learning the material. because this class was so heavy on the science I only received a c. even with that being said, still one of my favourites!
FANTASTIC prof (hope you read this after you've gotten into the wine, Kim). She's seriously hilarious & so passionate about neuroscience that it just makes you love it too! I HIGHLY recommend this course to anybody looking for an incredible elective.. This prof inspired me to take a minor in neuroscience! TAKE THIS CLASS.
crammed semester with nonstop workload
Her teaching in the last section wasn't consistent with the first two sections. She seemed to lose patience and steam in this last section. Found some comments unprofessional at times and other times explanations were misleading/misguiding. Last exam was a little bit of a bait and switch. She was quite good in the first two sections.
far too difficult for a 2nd yr class.I took a 3rd year addiction course with similar content & ended up getting an A yet almost failed kims class. She does not give much choice on her exams and also wants way too specific of answers; you must know the definition to the T. The content is extremely interesting but there is just too much to know.
Kim is a really great prof! She's highly organized and delivers her lectures as such. She was also really funny, and enjoyed having class discussions or taking polls. The only issue is that you basically have to memorize things word-for-word in order to get a good mark on her midterms and exam. (P.S. Do the bonus assignments!)
Kim is a good prof. and very approachable, but this material may have been a little difficult for being labeled as a Psych course. It was definitely more Neuroscience-based. Although the material was difficult, she did try her best to explain it in a way that Arts students could comprehend, and it was certainly interesting.
Kim is great! She's so nice and passionate about what she does. The class was difficult, but the material was so interesting that I hardly noticed.
The material presented in class goes along with what is in the boomk, but that does not mean the book has it all. She does give more details in class. Importantly you have to set your mind into the material, thats the way you'll do good. About her: excellent personality, and funny
Excellent prof!! I wish everyone taught like Kim teaches! She's funny, super intelligent, and very approachable. Exams were pretty hard, but definitely reasonable and very well tailored to the content of the course. She sparked my love for neuroscience! Looking forward to taking more courses with her.
Kim is the best prof I had first year. Her passion for the material made it hard to not love the class! She is funny and extremely clear. She cares about her students and is always available for help. Her midterms and exam we very fair, and she's always clear as to what material to focus on when studying. Her lectures amazing, don't ever miss one!
I loved this class so much! I was terrified to take it because of the science but Kim is a great teacher, tells you exactly what to study for the exams, and marks are fair. I hadn't taken science in 6 years and I got an A+ because Kim is awesome!! I suggest VOD if you can so you can pause/rewind, it helps when clarification is needed.
Fair, but you have to study
Amazing prof. Super hilarious! Course work is nothing overly complicated. If you pay attention and go to classes, it's a piece of cake. Take this class!
She is amazing, engaging and smoking hot. She's smart, funny and tells you like it is. Kim made a hard science fun, interesting and relative to delay life. Content helps students through personal troubles like how to deal with stress and eating disorders. Great class. Great Prof. love you Kim!!- Becky Gaudry.
Phenomenal prof. The class ain't easy, you have to work for your mark, but very much worth it. She's a great prof, explains things well, great sense of humor, connects with students, very good at capturing your interest. Best prof I've had to date. I will definitely take her in the future, if you're smart, you will too. Difficult, but fair exams.
Fantastic Prof! Engaging, easy to understand, funny and very helpful. Lectures were a treat to attend and super interesting. She uses technology and new developments in the field to enhance the material and make it super interesting. I jump at the chance to take any of her classes! Side note: she has the best show wardrobe ever.
I don't really know what the hype is about Kim. Yeah, she's funny and the students seem to respect and enjoy her. But her tests are horrible and really hard and I feel concepts are not explained THAT well, not terrible though.
Kim is a fantastic professor that genuinely cares for her students. I took this class a while ago but I thoroughly enjoyed it! Her tests are not easy but they are a great representation of how you know the material. Pay attention, study hard and you should get a great mark!
Kim is a great professor. While the course material can be challenging, Kim conveys the information quite well. Her knowledge and life experiences add a lot to the course. Like anything in life, you only get out what you put in. Study! Don't complain if you receive the bare minimum for doing a minimal amount of work. Not even in Neuro.....
You have to study way too hard for this course, coming from a student with an A's in almost all neur courses. Her marking schemes are very hard.
Material was interesting but lectures weren't great. Exams were tough and she needs you to know so much detail.
Kim is an unbelievable professor. She is really really really good at her job. Her teaching is unreal. Amazing one to one. Hands down one of the funniest and most knowledgable professor in neuroscience. Kim rocks.
One of the hardest profs in NEUR. Lots of materials to absorb. Taking full course load with this class is not recommended especially if you are taking science courses with labs that require extra time outside of the class.
She's probably one of the greatest profs I've had in university so far. Her lectures are clear and she's very good at explaining the material. Her class in not easy, though, you need to go to lecture and review your notes a few times if you want to get a good mark. She usually stays after class to clear up any questions.
Will only give you help if you first prove that you are a dedicated student and not just looking to cut cornersbe given answers. She was really reluctant to provide any help at first, but after a while she warmed up. She really appreciates effort! Tests can include kind of obscure questions, but marking is relatively lenient if you get the gist.
Hard prof, she knows shes hard but its like she does it on purpose, were students here come on. She doesnt prepare well for classes and cant answer questions in class, she is definitely a good student but not a good prof, only thing i loved about her is her fashion sense, do not take any class with kim if you don't have to, horrible professor.
Amazing prof! She makes you work for your grade but if you need help her door is always open. Her class is a lot of fun since she is so funny.
I've taken many of Kim's classes before, and I think she conveys her information well and is very helpful. However, in this course I feel like some of the questions were vague and focused more on minute details than larger concepts (which she said she would test on), though it might just have been dissonance between my expectations and hers.
Kim is my hero. She's so passionate about what she's teaching that its contagious. She knows her stuff and presents a lot of cutting edge research that keeps the course exciting and engaging. You really need to know the material to get an A on her exams, but if you're interested in Neuro that shouldn't be a problem. She's an absolute gem of a prof.
Kim with ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT is my favourite professor in all of my university career. The way she cares for her students you will not find easily at all. She is challenging, but an "amazing" challenge. If you want to learn, she is the best to take hands down! She goes out of her way to make sure EVERYONE learns and is involved.
Her passion for the course material is contagious and makes attending lectures incredibly enjoyable. She always includes recent research in her lectures and draws functional and humorous connections with modern life. To do well you must attend lectures and study hard - exams focus on details as much as larger concepts. Top 2 favourite professors.
She has inspired me to consider going into research for a career. After her class I am always so motivated to do the work she assigns. She is kind when you go to talk to her. She values critcial thinking and is willing to listen when you disagree with her. The textbook on the course outline was useless for the class but the articles are a must.
Kim is awesome! Clearly loves her subject and her students. Her lectures are interesting, and Kim has a talent for explaining complicated topics in a way that is easy to understand. Also, she tells you exactly what to expect on tests. I'm definitely planning on taking more classes from her in the future!
I LOVED this class. The brain can get confusing and Dr. Hellemans made sure that it never was when she was lecturing. She really made sure that the material was understood and clearly cared for the students (her memory of names is uncanny). Overall not a very in-depth class with regard to lecture, however her exams draw heavily from the readings.
Kim is a great prof. She explains difficult concepts over and over and really wants her students to succeed. Take advantage of the review sessions she holds and make sure to review your midterm when you get it back. Make sure to use the specific terminology used in class for short answer qs. It's a tough course, but passable, and she's fair.
She's great. Funny and she is clearly excited about the things that she is teaching. I've taken many classes with Kim has been consistently a great prof. She doesn't make the tests easy but she makes lectures interesting and explains difficult concepts well enough that if you are present physically and mentally in class you should do well.
Never had i had a class before where everyone is so interested and so involved in the conversation. Kim makes this class relatable to everyone and it is therefore easy to learn. I learned so much! :D
Best prof I've ever had. She's hilarious and gives really great lectures. Pay attention in class, do your readings, and you'll get a good mark.
Best prof at Carleton. Go to class, do readings, and you'll get a good mark. She keeps lectures interesting with her great sense of humour. Would take this class again.
kim is bae, kim is life. kim is the best prof u will ever have in university. She is perfect in every sense.
Very kind, energetic, made lectures fun and got people involved. Understandable, and helpful giving clear explanations. Although tests were tough, she was really fair, you really had to work for your mark.
She's fantastic! Her lectures are interesting, she gives chances to earn bonus marks, and her midterm is more than just multiple choice, which gives a better chance at getting a good mark for the students (like myself) who suck at multiple choice questions.
You can tell she loves what she does, she's able to explain everything well and with enthusiasm. Your never bored in this class.
One of my favourite teachers in university so far! Her lectures are fun and interesting ( she plays music in her class which is cool). She is really interested in what she does and it kind of seeps out into the students around her. Definitely makes me more excited about neuroscience!
I absolutely loved this course! Her lectures are so interesting and I can definitely admit that, I'm debating on changing my program to neuroscience! Her test was really easy, but its crucial to study.. A lot! Would definitely take again .
Best professor I've had all university career. She is the meaning of an inspirational person. She's kind, helpful, caring, amazing at lecturing, funny, and will make you feel like you WILL succeed, no matter how you feel about yourself. Neuro is not easy but if you let her, she will help you. Also, fashion sense is outstanding.
Kim is the best prof I've had in my three years of University so far. She's incredibly organized and is so passionate about her job. She truly wants to make sure that you UNDERSTAND material so don't hesitate to ask her questions. She's so nice and friendly:) Her examinations are very do-able and fair!! DO THE ASSIGNMENTS. They're on the tests:D
Kim Hellemans is flawless.. I hear here hair's insured for $10000. I hear she does car commercials... In Japan. Her favourite movie is Varsity Blues. One time she met John Stamos on a plane, and he told her she was pretty!! BUT seriously Kim Hellemans is an angel sent from above and if you take her class, you won't be disappointed.
Evaluations were tough, but extremely fair. Lectures were so incredible, half the time I didn't even want them to end. My favourite part of class was always admiring her outfits (and can we talk about the shoes, people?!). The Beyonce of neuroscience, that's for sure. Go out of your way to take her classes.
Kim is an amazing prof, would definitely recommend her for any neuro class. Textbook is important for tests and quizzes. She gives opportunities for bonus marks - take advantage of this because her exams are tough but very fair. She cares for her students and is willing to help if you need it. She prepares her students thoroughly for future courses
Course-load is quite a bit if you're not a science major and even if you are, keep up with your notes! Exams/midterms are a breeze; She makes it obvious what you need to know. Awesome prof, inspirational and energetic, makes lecture anything but boring! Evident she's passionate, which makes all the difference.
Take every class with Kim that you can. Lectures are awesome, interesting and lots of class participation. Everything on the exams was clearly in the lectures. You will be tested on everything so it is a lot, but it's all clear and fair.
My favorite prof at Carleton! I am a psychology student and took her Neuroscience class Introduction to Mental Health and Disease. She is a phenomenal teacher that keeps you engaged and eager to learn more. I have taken many VOD classes and hers was by far the best.
Do not take her course if you're the kind of student that learns better scrambling to write down missing sections on the slides, as opposed to focusing on her explanation. She doesn't go a good job explaining an important process in different ways. She just builds on the previous slides, which is hard for some who need alternative explanations.
She may be knowledgeable, but unless you know anything about neuroscience, don't take her class. She only explains things once. If you don't understand something the first time, your screwed.
Best prof in the entire university. Recommend this course to anyone at Carleton regardless of program degree or science knowledge. Teaches at a slow pace for all learners, incredibly passionate, always looking for feedback and is super engaged with all of her students. Amazing amazing woman and completely fair tests!
Best professor I've ever had. She packs a LOT of information into one lecture so you're going to want to write everything down. But the way she teaches grabs your attention, is clear and memorable. Weekly reading reviews keep you up with material and are easy marks. You definitely need to keep up with the course but she sets you up to succeed.
Love her to death. One of the best prof's I've had at Carleton, right up there with Bob. Her lectures are awesome, so interesting. She doesn't assign a crazy amount of homework, just quizzes that aren't that hard. She gives chances for bonus marks which is good. She's an awesome person. 12/10. Would 100% take another one of her classes.
Great prof! Loves her job and the field she studies. Wants students to get involved. Lectures are super interesting and her teaching style is the best I've ever had. By far my favourite and best prof I've ever had in my 3 years of uni!
Honestly one of the best professors at Carleton! Her lectures are packed with content and she always brings a lot of enthusiasm to class. Very approachable and easy to talk too. And her style is on point! If anything else just go to class for some outfit inspiration ;P
Only graded on midterm, exam and assignments (2 a week). The assignments were interesting and informal. She is a really funny teacher, there are no boring moments. I do suggest, if you can, speed up the lectures it does help you get through them fast if you don't have time. (Spend the money so you can pause and re-watch if you're online)
I took this class as an arts psych student who doesn't consider themselves to be great at science. This is my highest mark so far. Kim is the best prof I've had in university to date, I think. She's caring, intelligent, and lectures are so interesting. She really makes sure to explain difficult concepts to suit everyone.
Hands down the BEST prof at Carleton I've had. Her lectures are super interesting and her midterms and finals are always covering material directly from lectures.
Easily my favorite prof I've had at Carleton so far. She's super into what she's teaching, and her field, and always finds a way to make her lectures all the more interesting.
Kim is a phenomenal professor, so caring, funny and passionate about neuro. I always loved her classes! She goes slow enough that people without a science background will get it, but if you have a science background then the class is a breeze. It can seem like a lot of content at times, and a lot of memorization is needed, but it is reasonable.
By far the most caring prof. Always accessible outside the classroom. Very passionate about teaching and helping students do their best. Difficult course but Kim makes it enjoyable!
One of my most favourite professor. I was lucky to have someone as passionate about neuroscience as she is. She made my first university experience a positive one. Her grading and expectations are clear, she is super accessible and makes the information relatable and applicable. Her lectures are interactive and engaging.
She is a very good teacher regardless your background. Very detailed and to the point. She's great at getting back to you and always wants to help you if you're willing to go to her. Definitely a great teacher choice!!
Favourite professor in university so far!
You must attend class or you will be doomed. She is passionate and explains things well. This class is pure memorization pretty much and she teaches well.
Kim is amazing. Just amazing. I loved her and her class so much that I've added neuro on as a minor. If you have the chance to take a class with her, take it.
She is by far my favourite teacher so far! I took this class with no science background. She made neur extremely interesting and easy to understand. Thanks to her I found my minor! I would jump at the opportunity to have Kim again. She is caring, understanding, and she loves what she does. She does gives at least one reading a week that is graded.
Dr. Hellemans is one of my favourite profs as she is so passionate about Neuroscience. She is very easy to talk to and loves to help her students. Her course is mainly made of exams which you need to study for in order to do really well. Overall she really cares about her students and I would 100% recommend her.
LOVED this prof! I love neuro but she made me love it even more! :) Any class she teaches, ill be taking!
THE BEST prof i've ever had. So caring and her lectures are so helpful. Loved going to her class every week and would love to take again
Kim is an amazing prof very passionate and high level of professionalism and communication skills
Kim clearly has a thorough understanding of the material and is able to teach it in a clear, to the point way. She is also down to earth, which makes her lectures very easy to sit through. I recommend taking as many of her classes as you can.
Kim has to be one of my favourite professors. She's so kind and enthusiastic and really wants her students to succeed. Would recommend her to everyone. She was the reason I'm now minoring in neuroscience.
Kim is the absolute best.
Dr. Hellemans is clearly passionate about what she teaches and clearly cares about her students. Theres lots of opportunities to earn marks through online assignment (readings usually, but sometimes podcasts) and even a couple bonus mark opportunities. Kim's class was the perfect way to start off my degree and I look forward to more of her lectures
Dr. Kim is honestly one of the BEST professors ive had so far in university, she makes her lectures so fun and interesting, shes straightforward on whats on the exam and what isnt. if you choose not to go to class youre the one missing out tbh. shes super hilarious and makes very relatable jokes for a professor her age.
I went into NEUR1202 with no science background and still managed to get a good grade. Its pretty easy, considering that its a first year course. Kim is an amazing professor and really loves what she does, she's extremely helpful and listens to everyones feedback. The assignments are easy and she gives out bonus marks as well, highly recommend
Kim is a wonderful teacher! I came into her class with no science background but still managed to do really well, due to her lectures that are clear as day. Super funny too! Tests are fair, both in content covered and in marking. includes videos, polls and time for discussions to keep her lectures engaging.
Kim is an amazing professor. I'm now considering minoring in Neuroscience because of her. There is no textbook for this course, so attend lecture. The $50 VOD fee is also worth it. You will have opportunity for bonus marks, exam reviews, and she grades assignments on your best 8/10. Neuroscience is not easy, but Kim makes it enjoyable.
Neuroscience is challenging for those who do not have a science background, but Professor Hellemans made the material easy to understand and interesting. As long as you do all of the reading assignments, all of the bonuses, take good notes, and study hard you will do fine. Such a caring and nice person.
Absolutely love Kim, even though she is the chair of the neuro department she always gets back to you as soon as she can! She completely inspired me with her lectures and actually assigns readings that she thinks interest the class. Completely open to feedback. 15/10 would recommend, you will not regret it! Can't wait to take her upper year classes
Kim is one of the best prof's I've ever had. You have so many opportunities to get marks you really can't fail. Assignments are your best 8/10 and are never more than a few sentences long. Exams are fair and extremely clear. Kim loves Neuro and she's sure to make you love it too.
Dr. Hellemans is not only funny and stylish but she clearly knows the material well and will make sure you do too. Very sweet prof that genuinely cares about her students.
Kim once mentioned that many of her ratings were in regards to her sense of humour and fashion forward outfits and often not about her brilliance. While those things are true I cannot stress enough, Dr. Hellemans is BRILLIANT. I love her passion and could listen to her lecture all day. Sincerely, an inspired female future neuroscientist.
You're marked on midterm (35%), exam (50%), and 15% for small assignments. Prof is amazing, but the material is heavy. Kim is very energetic and fun, she tries her best to help us understand. Sometimes its just hard to grasp the material because it is neuroscience after all. I am not majoring in neuro so it is a bit difficult.
Brilliant Prof. She cares about her job and students and it is evident. i Wish she could be my teacher every year :(((
So smart and passionate. Her lectures were so interesting and fun, I always looked forward to her class. She explains things so clearly and makes difficult content much easier. I've since taken many other neuro courses and hers is still my favourite. Also I love her podcast and listen to every episode.
The most amazing professor and person. Her passion and incredible knowledge for the topics discussed make you love the class even more. Cares about all of her students and wants them to do well. Such an intelligent woman with a FANTASTIC sense of style. If you work hard the course isn't too difficult. I LOVE KIM!!
Kim is the most caring, passionate, and kind woman ever! Her lectures were very engaging and her love for NEUR was very clear! She makes you look forward to class every week, and she is very stylish and cool! I am very thankful that I had the chance to take her class and she made my first semester at UNI amazing! Get to know her! She is great!!!!
Kim is my favourite professor! She takes the time to actually connect with her students and makes sure they understand the material given some of it can be heavy. I actually enjoyed going to her class and she got me really interested in Neuroscience. If you have the chance to have her as a professor, you won't regret it!
Kim is an amazing prof! Shes knowledgeable and explains things very well. The material can be difficult but Kim breaks it down for you very well. If you get the chance to take a class with her you won't regret it! We had a midterm, final and 8 mini assignments and there were opportunities for bonus marks (4%) in class!
Dr. Hellemans is my favourite neuro prof. Her teaching style is impeccable and her passion for the field of neuroscience is inspiring. After going through hell in first year as a neuroscience major, this course made me sure that i wanted to stay in this field. Although it was heavy, it was very well instructed and the content was super interesting.
Shes brilliant
She is very smart and inspirational. I wish I could take more of her classes and the class I had with her was actually with another prof, but we used her recorded lectures. For sure my favorite teacher and am going to miss her lectures, as they are fun and interesting and she is very brilliant cause you forget you are pressured to learn. She's best
She's hirlarious! Tries to make the class as enjoyable as she can and as a non science student she did a pretty good job at making the material somewhat easy to understand. She also provides opportunities for bonuses if you attend her classes or watch her lectures which is really nice.
BRILLIANT An inspirational, well-versed prof with a passion for her research and her students.
Dr. Kim is your best choice when it comes to choosing an intro class to Neuroscience.
Professor Hellemans has been one of my favourite professors, she really cares about her students and ensures she is available outside of class. She takes in student feedback and works it into upcoming lectures and assignments. I would definitely recommend her courses
Brilliant professor. The shining star of the department of Neuroscience. Tough but very fair course, Dr. Kim cares about her students so much, constantly adapting the course throughout Covid. I was brought to tears by one of her emails acknowledging what Carleton did to students this year with the workload and how immediately she worked to fix it.
An amazing woman. I strive to be like her someday.
Brilliant professor. Knows what she's talking about and always finds a way to make the lectures (even the dense ones) interesting. Bright personality and checks up on students, cares about their mental health. 10/10 would recommend.
DR HELLEMANS IS B R I L L I A N T. Extremely passionate about her work and students. Amazing professor. The course is a Neuroscience prerequisite, its not going to be rainbows and butterflies, but the more work you put into this course the better prepared you will be, not only for the next year, but for ur entire undergrad. Kim is life goals.
Best prof I've had at Carleton. She's so intelligent and inspiring and delivers material in a way that challenges, but doesn't overwhelm her students. I appreciate how honest she is with her students all the time and how much she cares about student mental health - especially during the pandemic. I aspire to be like her someday
Such a great prof! You can tell she truly loves what she teaches. She is a very helpful and considerate towards students. Definitely the best prof I've had so far.
Great professor, absolutely no complaints. Dr. Hellemans really cares about her students and really wants for all of us to succeed.
Professor Hellemens is one of the best profs I've had so far! You can tell she truly cares about her students and does her best to help them succeed. She makes course content interesting and even if you don't excel at science, she'll make sure everyone understands. 100% recommend taking her courses!
Super nice and compassionate professor. The lecture were content-heavy but she made the material engaging and fun to learn. Tests were very fair as long as you studied well.
Kims an amazing teacher, she made my first semester so fun. she's so youthful which is so cute! her pre-recorded lectures are fun and informative, you have to watch the lectures and focus on the studies she talks about since they show up on testing material (don't rely on PowerPoints). assignments and tests very straight up.
Great professor
She was very explanatory in her lectures making studying for tests easy. There were many opportunities for grades (assignments, quizzes, and bonus assignments) that were all very clear in terms of instructions and grading.
One of the neuro departments best profs really cares about her students and is easy to follow lectures
Brilliant professor who makes content very accessible. Not only does she have a very in depth understanding of the course content, but she is also pedagogically savvy. She knows how to transmit information clearly to students. I also liked her anecdotes and drawings because they made it easier to remember the content.
As a prof, she's pretty good but as a person she seems pretty pretentious and stuck-up.
Dr. Hellemans is brilliant. She is the definition of a down-to-earth professor that incorporates fun as well as professionalism in her classroom environment. She invites guest speakers into her classroom which provides an in-depth approach to better our learning experience. She is a brilliant prof that everyone should look up to!
Content was fine but going to classes were useless as she did not add anything to the papers that were taught so I stopped going to some of them and have still done well. A lot of what she did or said when teaching more sensitive topics seemed performative or insensitive. Disappointed after I had heard so many good things.
She makes the lectures SO engaging and she has a great personality for presenting and getting people's attention. I was nervous to go into a neuroscience course at first but she makes it pretty easy and enjoyable. Plus, she gives out bonus marks and small, easy assignments. She is great at teaching and the best professor I have had this year :)
Super engaging lectures, takes almost all questions and answers them well. No textbook, but lectures go fast so the time you'd be reading your textbook you can use to copy slide information you missed. No online lectures posted, but if you have any questions her office hours are welcoming. I am a first year student and kept up fine so you can too!
Professor Hellemans is by far one of the greatest instructors I've ever had. She truly cares for her students. The assignments were really simple (reading an article and answering questions) and the midterm was (in my opinion) harder than the final -- which wasn't insane if you studied and prepared properly. Also: bonus marks! What's not to love?
Overall, the course was relatively easy compared to other first year courses. She is a nice professor, however our class ended up running significantly behind schedule. As well, I feel as though she lets her political bias influence the class and content in a negative way, as it takes away from the scientific nature of the course.
Prof. Hellemans clearly puts a lot of work into her classes, however she takes a lot of class time getting side tracked and answering questions that are irrelevant to exam material. Layout and content very straight forward and easy to do well, but has lots of political biases for a neuroscience class.
Professor Hellemans is an engaging lecturer who brings energy and passion to the material. While the course can be content-heavy, her clear explanations and helpful study tools like unstuck ai make it manageable. Attend class, put in the work, and you'll do well.
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and passionate about Neuroscience, and teaches it excellently. The class I took with her (NEUR1202) was engaging- could be challenging, but lots of learning resources and opportunity to earn bonus marks. You can tell student success is important to her. Getting to see real specimens in class was a delight!
SUCH an incredible professor. If you are taking NEUR1202, 100% take it with her. She teaches in a super captivating and engaging way while also making difficult concepts so much easier to learn. All I have to say is that it is very evident that she truly cares about her students success. I wish she taught all my courses lol
Dr. Hellmans is an incredible prof. Her lectures are very straightforward, and 'knowledge checks' help to solidify concepts. Exams aren't crazy, as long as you make sure to attend lectures and study. Dr. Hellmans is very available for feedback and conversation after lectures and is super kind and helpful. Plus, 4% extra credit! 100% recommend.
i loved dr hellemans!!! she is an amazing lecturer so you're always captivated and tuned in. her office hours are amazing, she is extremely caring and wants you to succeed. pay attention in the lectures, and you'll be fine! bonus opportunities help too (up to 4%). knowledge checks reinforce concepts and were great! if you can, take 1202 with her.
I loved taking this class. Dr Kim Hellemans was very up front about the difficulty and content of her class, she was available in office hours and was super helpful outside of the lectures. In the lectures she always gave time for students to ask questions and helped a great deal. She made the content easy to digest and overall quite fun to learn!
Such a knowledgeable and amazing prof! Her lectures are so insightful and engaging. I'm an arts student and I did well in this class! If you pay attention, write good notes in class and properly prepare for the midterm/final exam you will do well in this class. I also recommend doing the extra credit it's such a grade booster.
Dr. Hellemans was amazing!
I thought she would be fun because everyone hyped her up, and she is - but she also is a bit full of herself and doesn't seem genuine. Dissapointed after I heard lots of good stuff - it's all on the surface & she judges people indirectly which can be a bit off-putting. The course was interesting, but wouldnt take it with her again
Dr. Hellemans is excellent at teaching, amazingly organized, engaging, with crystal clear explanations. Fair testing that gets at student understanding effectively. Took off one star due to bringing her large political bias not suited to a science-based course, and came across condescending and performative.
Dr Kim is great at her job. Can teach an intro class very well, and her tests are a lot easier than the material that she's testing. Only thing about her, and not in a mean way, is that she comes across as judgmental, and fake with her students, especially during office hours. Apart from that, she's great at teaching, and you can tell she loves it.
super nice went looking for my prof to ask questions and couldnt find him so she helped me out and answered my questions without having a meeting or anything set up. tests are also pretty easy
She tries too hard, and I mean TOO hard. I feel like she has potential as a prof but she tries to hard to be Gen Z when she's like 50. She is also really full of herself and is the kind of person that will pull out her phone during office hours and ignore what you say. Really full of herself and needs to tone it down
She is extremely passionate about her career, wants everyone to do good in her class and offers many one-on-ones. She goes a bit fast for my liking during lectures, especially as I have 0 science background, but as long as you study long and pay attention in lectures you should be good. Exam is 50%, midterm is 35%, and weekly open book quizzes.
Dr Hellemans is very involved with her students and with the neuroscience community in general. She cares a lot about everyone in the class and is always available if you need help for the class or for anything in general. The class isn't that hard, as long as you're able to understand basic neuroscience and use good reasoning.
Lectures are fun and engaging. She's super fun
Awesome prof, wants her students to suceed and willing to help out as much as she can
Dr. Kim is the best professor I've had. She clearly loves teaching, is passionate about the course, she makes a lot of jokes, and cares so much about her students. She uses respectful language when talking about psychiatric disorders to decrease stigma and misconceptions, and is always open to corrections if she makes a mistake. She's the best 💗
love her. She is very very engaging and cares a lot about students. the midterm and final were very fair. loved going to office hours and chatting, she also breaks down complex material super well. you do need to study well. graded on knowledge checks 15% (answer the question on the board) midterm 35%, final 50%. going to class is essential tho.
Really good professor, 15% is just showing up to class and answering these questions and she makes the lectures very interesting and enjoyable. She takes the time to try and remember everyone's name which is very appreciated considering its a 300 person class.
