Good prof, bad course.. and she's hot

Great teacher, lots of notes, but worth it

A phenomenal person.
Nice Lady but i would rather watch paint dry
Great Prof! Great Lecturer...should I say more?

Interesting course..overwhelming amount of discussion
best prof for me this year

jam packed lecture

nice prof., intelligent, but class content very boring
take a summer course and you'll have a great class experience
Prof Luton is creative, energetic, and awesome all around!
She's really funny cause she swears non-stop
Most personable prof ever
No Comments
If only the text wasn't so bad.
She did not seem to know what she was doing.
super cool and funny, personable, unique...exams were too hard
Interesting material although exams are killers. She sometims has attitude.
this class blows; i want to stab myself with my pen, over and over, retire!
very biased, doesn't like to be wrong
easily the worst prof in the world. I hated her text book sing along of a course.
****. Doesn't accept conflicting opinions. She should retire, she's useless. Boring. Exams are random and are too specific.
yuck. forget it.
Obviously knows her stuff..and can be funny sometimes...although her exams were always so hard even though I studied my ass off.

I really like her!!! She keeps your interest through the whole class, even though it's first thing in the morning.
Miserable. Condescending. Disrespectful. Arrogant. Insanely low class average. Often flat-out ignored students with raised hands. A FINE EXAMPLE OF THE SERIOUS FLAWS IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT SHE HAS BEEN BLATHERING ON ABOUT FOR THE PAST 4 MONTHS.
Only had her for a month but she seems good so far.
VERY unhelpful and sympathetic to students who are legitimately sick. Makes you feel embarrassed when you answer a question wrong. And don't talk about pop culture when you haven't got a clue about it! AIRHEAD!!!
Yeah, she doesn't like to hear opposing viewpoints. Very feminist, and can't see that sometimes males are discriminated against like females are...glad I don't have her anymore
Not recommended class to take with her if you want to pursue Soc second year.
Her lectures are fast-paced for half of the time and dead slow for the other half. She lets her personal opinions inappropriately conflict with her lectures. She is incredibly biased and will support arguments of students who are ignorant of the facts
Luton is a really nice and personable professor. She clarifies concepts and shows the class that she is a real person too, not just a drone put at the front of the class to teach. Also, she is passionate about the topics she teaches.
I like her better than Prof. White, I think she clarifies subjects better than he does and she has better control of lectures (i.e. she doesn't show the slides and talks at the same time) Her exams are also more fair, White's final came out of left field
Overall .. HORRIBLE !
Worst. Teacher. Ever. No, seriously... She's horrible.
Not a fan of this one, she seems like she will be friendly at first but it all goes downhill. You're stuck with nametags the whole year, are talked down too and it is basically her way or now way.
The worst prof I've ever had. She makes you feel bad when you don't have the right answer. She acts like she's better than everyone else. The lectures are easy to follow. BUT make sure to jot down any insignificant fact; it may show up on the exam!
she sucks
Seemed okay at first. Lectures were extremely dry and one-sided. Exams were difficult -too much material covered (know your "Seeing Ourselves"!) Not very approachable or willing to help.
Awful teacher, she's bitter, uses opinion as fact, is mean deep down. while she makes a good first impression, she goes downhill VERY quickly. final exam was horrible just to spite students!
I found her to be an okay professor until i studied my butt off for that final exam and saw what she had given us. It was honestly purposely written to trick you and fail half the class. I was disgusted and will never take her class again.
Worst thing I have ever come in contact with. Doesn't look at you when you ask a question. Unless you're one of the three students in the class who I'm sure are her offspring, forget about a fair grade! She's the WORST! She should not be allowed to teach.
Bad bad prof. Likes to pretend to be very friendly and approachable but is condescending and mean spirited. Her exams were deliberately meant to screw the students who didn't write down every insignificant fact.
Bad prof, picks on students that dont know the answer. Very hard final and you are expected to read a million chapters of a stupid book every week. Watches you like a hawk in tests, makes you cover ur scantron answers with a paper as you fill them in or she will accuse you of cheating.
Lovely teacher, extremely knowledgable. Made class fun.
Great teacher, always a fun class
No Comments
Completely opposite from Carroll (they each teach half the class), she's super friendly but in reality that's just fakeness, deep down she doesn't care about any problems you might have. Dunno about her exams, not done any yet.
Useless lectures... pretends to be cool... she's a ****..

Expects a friendly good morning every class (annoying). Stands EXTREMELY close when taking to you. Exams are hard and you are expected to know every minor/insignifcant detail. She is quite the nazi during tests. But, possible to do semi well in the class by only scanning the text book.
Expects students to know every single detail for exams. Go to class and study your lecture notes and you will do fine on exams. Always breaks into stories about her personal life...oh Marshall...but the class isn't terrible and my TA was hot, so there.
She is an awesome teacher. Super nice. I don't know why anybody would say she is mean, or a hard marker!! If you study the material it's not hard to get a really good mark. She's very funny, and always in a good mood!!
She is unfair.HUGE B****. Her test questions do not reflect the material learned in class. I did enjoy the lectures; however, it was discouraging knowing that after attending EVERY lecture I could not get a90 in the class. wants u to fail. The authour of the text could not get an A on final.
lectures are straight forward her exams are pretty tough.
I went into university thinking i was going to be a soc major.. professor luton RUINED that for me. first term I had carroll and fell in love with the course, I was doing very well and looked forward to going to each lecture. Then came Luton and I finished with a 62! Worst prof so far in my time at western..
I am shocked with some of the mean comments made about such a nice and fair professor. All you have to do is go to her lectures and then just read over your notes 2 days before her easy multiple choice exams. Don't memorize everything word for word. Just read over your notes, always greet her, and smile and you will get at the least a 75% mark.
Though her lectures are interesting, exams are unfair. Study lecture notes more than the text.
I think that if I had Luton later on (maybe 2nd or 3rd year) I would enjoy her. I had her in first year and her course was the hardest I took. I went to every lecture and took careful notes - studied for the exam for weeks! I still didn't do well in the course. I found the exams to be unfair with too much emphasis on unimportant details.
Expects you to be WAY to enthusiastic for an early class. Lets you bring in music to play but made fun of The Postal Service when I brought it in, which ticks me off. Nice lady, overall. Exams are tough. Doesn't seem like you could ever study enough for them.
Exams are impossible
really a horrible prof. needs to know when to keep her mouth shut as she doesnt understand what confidentiality is
exams VERY hard, really cant prepare effectively for them AT ALL. Extremely unopenminded and very one sided. Actually AWFUL. i love m y tutorial leader though, otherwise i dont think i would have stayed in the class
No matter how hard you try to prepare for her exams, you will fail!!! SHE IS RIDICULOSLY HARD AND DOES NOT HELP YOU AT ALL...she is nasty during exams..so if you want to get marks take, the essay course to get marks...i will never take her again
She is just a bad professor and I didn't like her at all. She basically ruined an otherwise intersting course
horrible prof. its not that her classes are so bad but she is just so annoying. shet thinks that her classes are so good. but i can always see people sleeping all the way in the back. she picks favs in the class and does not prepare you for the exam
No Comments
She seems nice at first and what she teaches seems to make sense until you get to the exam and u have no idea how to answer any of the questions since she pulls the questions out of her ass...I would recommend this course but another prof since her exams are impossible to do well..and also dont take the essay course it sucks..take the regular one
class matarial somewhat interesting, MUST PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURE in order to do well on exam. Textbook is useless, just study the slides and write down what she says. HARD TEACHER, will remove all powerpoint slides on purpose right before the exam..remember to save them early!! Somewhat helpful, probably better suited for upper year students.
Absolutely horrible prof. This course could have been much better planned and lectured.
Exams are very hard (we had approx. 50% class avg for first test), must pay attention & study hard, tutorial attendance very important - SPEAK IN TUTORIALS (worth 10% of mark!!). I personally think she's a good prof, but if you aren't a good student, don't do the work or the reading you're not going to do well in this course.
Nice lady, interesting material. ATTEND lectures and memorize the notes she gives you to do well on exams. Essays are likely to kill your mark in this class and tutorials are a complete waste of life.
Mean, inconsiderate, terrible, rude, unclear....the list could go on. Make sure to take this class with another professor because it has the potential to be good before Luton gets her hands on it. AVOID.
The Luton-meister was an amazing prof. The key to her is to sit close to the front and give her a cd to play before class. She'll love you and....that's about it. Exams are VERY TOUGH and missing Lectures is a SUICIDE mission. Be there, on time, all the time and things will go well. Tutorials=joke. 88% avg on my essays.
Really clear, concise, interesting material....and KILLER exams!!
i liked her better than Carrol. thought her lectures were pretty interesting. i stayed and talked to her after a lecture and she was really nice, she even e-mailed me books/resources i could pick up for further reading. however, during exams she is extremely nasty. her exams are impossible. overall, decent course.
She was awful. Her lectures didn't flow well, her tests were so hard because she worded her questions so that they were impossibly to understand. If you have her, please PLEASE switch do a different section/prof!!!
This class would be so awesome, if they got the right person to teach it! class average a 55%. I have her for three of my classes and am dropping the classes right now as we speak. Believe me she seems really nice at first-- BUT WATCH OUT-- especially when it comes to tests-- IMPOSSIBLE-- & acts like we are in grade 2 (cheating)-- GET A LIFE!
Nice teacher but her tests are insane. She does not discuss the textbook material in class. She pulls questions out of the text book about who said this or that and doesn't test main concepts or ideas. Impossibly hard multiple choice quizzes & tests. Tricky wording on her multiple choice tests. Her 'little quizzes' resemble a 400 level exam.
She is IMPOSSIBLE! A nice professior, with interesting lecture material, however her exams and quizzes are impossible! Tricky wording and abstract points! If your up for an impossible challenge take this course! Otherwise, be prepared to have your entire average lowered. Seriously switch courses, no one should have to be put through this!
Believes the students deserve to be spoon fed. Marks on average are very low.

VERY feminist. VERY anti America. 50 minutes of Soc 21 feels like a 50 minute hate session of capitalism, media, democracy, and conservative ideas. If you choose to take this course, don't let yourself get brainwashed!
Hard tests, do not test the general concepts or ideas of the course. Very hard to succeed in this particular course. Nice enough woman though.
I was fooled by her until I needed her: then I saw how inflexible she is. If you don't conform precisely to her expectations, she wouldn't piss down your throat if your heart was on fire. Reputation as a student means nothing; she assumes we're all liars and doesn't care one way or the other, really. Don't depend on her for help outside of class.
Excellent lecturer, one of the best, very strong women BUT her tests are different... very difficult! If she could make her tests more fair she would be an excellent prof, but at this point i would say avoid her if you can just because the exams are brutal
I've never been treated with such disrespect. Rudest prof I've met so far! Never take her class!
Does not follow course outline. Falls behind and removes chapters from the midterm. Expecting exam to cover just about the entire course.
Professor Luton is an amazing speaker who has a clear passion for her field. Her lectures are very interesting and she is a nice lady (who also has a backbone). The exams are very tough but this course isn't impossible to do well in. If you do the work and study hard you'll be fine. She is very opened to different ideas if you actually talk to her!
Horrible teacher, extreme femminist and here test are design to confuse you.
The class is great! She's funny, and the lecture material is interesting. What I like most are her 2 TAs! Are there hotter TAs on campus? Should nominate them for an award just based on hotness. Good job Instructor Luton...you have my attention!
Prof. Luton knows her material and presents it in an interesting way, however, you have to pay attention to every word she says. The answers to tests are well hidden in her lectures. I don't appreciate her manner of lecturing, I feel she is on a power trip, and somehow feel she is wanting more out of this than she is willing to give to her students
Unreasonable ****, do not take any classes of hers
Amazing prof!! She's incredibly knowledgeable and really knows her stuff. She also makes things interesting by using a variety of techniques.
Classes are interesting, topics are interesting. Exams are very hard. Even if you know your stuff well you need to know the details extremely well. Just by going to every class and doing all of your readings doesn't mean that you will do well. A good experience but not a good way to boost your marks.
she acts nice in the beginning, but then tries her best to make all of her students fail by the end of the year. there is no free marks around sociology with Kim Luton. Oh...except for the 8% attendance...but even then, you can only miss 7 classes all year or you get 0. Bi*&%
All I can say is, you can't force students to go to class!!! it's their choice! The attendance rule was so unfair!
She's the most horrioble professor I've had my whole entire life, and she made me hate sociology more than anything on Earth!! She's very rude, and she has a major attitude problem!!!!
Don't take the course, unless you absolutely love sociology.
Really enjoyed Lutons lectures, made the 3 hour class blow bye. Her exams are brutal though, all M.C. but its like she goes out of her way to make you do poorly on the exams. Doesn't matter how much you study, chances are you will not do very good on the exams. If you really enjoy Soc, take the class but study hard
Luton was able to give me a new hate for the subject of sociology, a subject i had previously enjoyed. She was extremely rude to student, as well, she seemed to enjoy embarassing students. in many classes, a brave student who would raise their hand to answer a question would be humiliated in front of a class of 200 students for giving a wrong answe
I'd run and switch her class for another one if I were you. Her tests are multiple choice and brutal. And she talks way too much about her family too. Who cares...I'm here to learn!
If she makes a bet in class, call her out and prove her wrong, she will follow through with her offer. I got a case of wine out of it.

I loved Luton. I took the class at Huron and it makes a difference. She is a lot more friendly and sociable. I highly recommend this class and I learned alot from this course. She knew what she was teaching and tought it clearly! By far my best class of my first year! GO to class, take notes, study and you'll be golden! Great Prof
this woman is crazy hard. her exams are ridiculous, and she doesnt take crap from anyone. shes an intense lady.
I love this woman! Her lectures are extremely relevant and compelling. I leave the class angry only because I am inspired to act and make a difference. I just had the midterm and my only studying was re-reading the P.Points with lecture notes and skimming the texts. It was NOT hard. Go to lectures, read, and you'll do GREAT.
Her exams are wicked hard, but you can't find a nicer lady! Her TA kicked the crap out of my stigma essay and even went so far as to say it wasn't a stigma when Luton had already said it was. STUDY THE THEORIES!!!! If you know them, you can apply them and get better grades. Attendance is NOT optional!
A lot of people seem to have a lot against her. She is a tough teacher, but she knows her stuff, is very fair and is an extraordinary lecturer. She is not out to fool you I promise. If you study well in advance, exams are not hard. Focus on lecture notes. Best way is to write them out and connect your notes to hers. Read the chapters. Great!
Worst prof. ever, if you can help it take the class at kings, its easier and you don't have to jump through this wack jobs hoops. Shes Nuts, stay away
Her lectures seem clear enough, but then you'll write one of her exams (which are multiple choice) and you'll realize despite knowing the material, the questions are wayyy too specific and accurately assess your understanding of the material. It's a bit of a let down.
People are too hard on her. You people have to remember that you're in university, exams shouldn't be just a test of knowledge it should be a test of how well you can read as well. That is all her exams are, if you read the questions carefully, there's no way you can't walk away with at least an 80.
By far my favourite prof. at university yet. Yes I agree, she has extremely hard almost impossible midterms and final, but I have never learned so much from a class, and paid so much attention in class. She is a brilliant lady, she knows her stuff!
Kim is a great teacher and has a passion for Soc. Her exams are based on application of knowledge, you cannot prepare fo that, you have to actually know the material. Kim tries to relate her life experiences to the material she teaches, you would do well if you relate all topics to your own life as a way undersand them.
I had Prof. Lutin for 1st year soc. and I am now in her deviance course. I found her exams first year a bit challenging, however I am now more comfortable with her exams, and I am doing extremely well. She is by far my favourite Prof. and has made my university experience more enjoyable. I would recommend her courses to n e 1. She is amazing!
AMAZING!!!! such an interesting class, you'll actually want 2 go to class/ enjoy class. the readings are soooo cool!
Terrible teacher. Rude, not personable whatsoever, and condescending to say the least.
Great prof. She may seem like a mean person, but nah..She has 7 kids and started uni in her 30's or so! thats impressive. She lectures well, but her exams are kinda random. You have to know the material well...can't 'wing it' even though most of the material may seem like common sense.
Absolutely impossible. Had her for first year, like everyone else, and she destroyed the entire subject for me. Exams focus on useless details that no one can possibly remember. Too paranoid with cheating, late policy is unfair. Expects way too much from you and gives nothing in return. Drop her classes if you have them, take it at Brescia/Kings
Kim, you are awesome! "It is not what lies ahead not what lies behind but what lies within you." Rock on....
She wants first years to fail. She does not want to be know as an "easy course" teacher. She also tells upper years how much she hates 1st years
She is a great lecturer, however notes must be taken very meticulously in order to have any shot at doing well on the exam which, by the way, is virtually impossible.
hands down, best professor. you are not guaranteed the best mark ever, but if you go to class, you will do well. one of the smartest most knowledgeable people i've ever met. definitely a class worth signing up and going to. she knows her stuff. don't be late or she won't let you in!!
She's VERY strict about punctuality... but she's an excellent lecturer. Exams are based mostly on the things she SAYS during class, not the slides or textbook notes. If you want to do well, make sure you pay attention during lectures and write down the facts/statistics that she repeats again slooowly.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED HER. HAD FOR DEVIANCE, AND SHE IS DEFINIITLY HARD, BUT KNOWS WHAT SHES TALKING ABOUT, AND NEVER BORING.
For all those bad mouthing one of the best Sociology Profs I've come in contact with. Grow Up. She's hard yes, but more than fair. Do the work and you get the mark. Wake up.. this isn't high school. Is is that hard to show up on time? or not be on F-Book for 50 minutes? Act like a child & she'll treat you as such and good on her. Luton is amazing!
Ok, as awsome as I think she is as a prof, her exams are WAY TOO HARD! Seriously, I went to ever class, took excellent notes, and studied hard, and I walked out of my midterm with a 58! I mean, seriously!? I wish someone else would just write her exams for her! She's such a good prof and I love going to her classes... I just HATE her evaluations!
She was an AMAZING professor. Yes - I agree the exams were impossible, even after attending every single class, taking great notes, and studying like crazy, but all in all I have never learned as much as I learned from Luton. She encouraged me to continue in Sociology. You'll have to work hard though. Take her Huron class... better than main.
Really a mean lady.
Exams are impossible. Classes are first thing in the morning and no laptop use is allowed. Slides are posted online but she leaves off the important details so you have to come to class to take notes. If you miss a class you're screwed. Her lectures are interesting though...
Despite the fact that she once (ACCIDENTLY)- bashed me in the head with a door while i was entering class( did't even hurt lol- Luton is down to earth, and very friendly- not to mention her extaordinary background!- take her class and find out- but a real hard worker- Great Work Luton!
Terrible Prof, dont take the class.
She was a pretty good prof but it was pretty hard for me to stay interested. I felt like material was just re-telling us everything we already know. Not majoring in Sociology so I lost interest by the end of the semester. She was quite funny, and she definitely knows her stuff though! I feel that earning marks in her class was far too easy..
Great Prof! Luton rewards hard work. If you go to class, take notes and do your readings, there is no reason you can't do well. On the flip side, if you choose to slack off, you will fail, no joke. You MUST attend class cause what she says is more important! Exams are hard, must apply knowledge, not just memorize. Overall, not as bad as ppl say.
if ever there was a hell on earth feminist
Amazing prof! Yes, the exams are difficult, but this isn't high school, suck it up. She made the course so interesting, it made me want to major in it. Overall, FAVOURITE TEACHER BY FAR
I have yet to meet someone who likes her. Stops the class if you walk in ONE minute late and makes you leave. Mono-toned, thinks she's hilarious, and reads straight off slides. But you have to endure her awful class in order to do decently on her tricky and hard exams. Class of 600 and the average was 52%.
Luton herself is an amazing woman. Speaks clearly, makes the lectures interesting by giving examples and getting the class involved. She teaches soo many classes yet is devoted to her family, students, and makes time to volunteer everywhere (she's like superwoman). The class however is extremely hard. Her exams however are BRUTAL. GO TO CLASS!
toughest prof yet. you can NOT be late to her class, if you are don't attend she will point you out and kick you out.
Luton is Awesome. Come on people be objective, yes she is hard but we`re in University now, read the text, come to class, and you will do well. The majority of people who suffered in her class deserved it because they didnt play the game smart by simply doing the work. You wanna check facebook instead of reading, then you deserve a low mark.
DO NOT BE LATE. Exams are brutal. She's a very intelligent woman and expects a lot from the class.
Excellent Teacher. She knows her stuff. Hard marker but fair. This class was online. She took part in all the discussions. Responds to questions. Nade the course really interesting. Best course yet.
Great prof, makes the class very interesting. I enjoy her lectures, because while drawing on the material she adds relative examples - I find it keeps me engaged in the class. Nothing worse than paying over $1000 for someone to read slids off a board without any animation whatsoever - so cheers professor Luton for not being boring.
First year, she's tough. She wants you to know what university is like. That being said, take her deviance class. One of the best classes I've ever taken. A feminist for sure, but at the same time, and amazing prof who definitely knows her stuff. I'm so happy I gave her another chance after Soc 20.
Great professor, really had hoped I'd get a chance to take another course with her before graduating. This woman is absolutely brilliant. What an inspiring professor. I owe my passion for Sociology/Criminology to her! Thanks for the encouragement and the drive to work so hard in my field!
boring, mean, despised going to the first two classes. Don't cut your wrists when you find out your marks.
Brutal. She definitely knows her stuff, but doesn't show it on the exams. 90% of the material tested is trivia/namedropping, not applicable or useful information. Beware: TONS OF READING FOR ALL OF HER COURSES.
this woman is impossible. she knows her stuff but she is actually so sassy and rude. way too hard on grades. her exams are brutal, completely random and designed to ruin you. you're grades in her classes will not make you happy!
Terrible. She knows her stuff but she is way too hard on grades.... her exams are completely unfair, and when asked a question she does not give a clear answer. Her exams are completely random and designed to make you FAIL. Just terrible.
GREAT PROF! yes, you'll have to work hard and yes, her final exam is brutal but you're in university now. You have to do the readings weekly. I didn't study that hard and I still ended up with a 77% avg because I did well in my tutorial class which is worth 35%.
Most controversial teacher at Western in respect to student's imperssion of her, but in my oppinion Luton is the best proffesor. She marks and treats people fairly; if you give it, you better be ready to get it back. Attend class and take notes, this woman is one of the best and everyone could use to learn from her!
She's really mellowed out last year. Late people will get in as long as they are respectful. Extremely interesting material and is nice to you if you show respect and interest. Cares about the students who care about the class and will actually make an effort to learn your name if you deserve it. Yes, exams are tough, but very fair.
A great prof, really knows her stuff, and is passionate about what she teaches, which makes a big difference in my opinion. Her lectures are well organized and easy to understand, and her exams aren't that difficult if you take notes in class and study the texts. If you don't have time to do the readings, at least do key terms, it will help alot!
she's just an awful woman.
sociology 1020 is not a bird course and a lot of people find that out too late. if you study hard you will do decent, but not great
Probably the meanest teacher I've ever had.
Yes, this course is difficult. Yes, her tests are brutal. Yes, you will have to try. However, I sincerely think she is a great prof and if you listen, you will learn a lot. It is not impossible to do well, and she clearly knows her stuff about sociology.
Good Prof. The lectures are interesting. She makes a point of ensuring everyone knows that sociology isn't the bird elective people think it is. That said, her exams are very hard. I finished with an 80% (so it is possible to do well), but the first exam I received a 68% and did 4% better than the average. Avoid if you're taking this as an easy A.
not good
very hard exams
This is an extremely tedious class. I went to every lecture, read every chapter, took extensive notes and STILL found the exams very challenging. Do not take this class for fun. The prof is SCARY and hates technology. The exams are about application, not knowledge, and there will always we two answers "right" but one "more right". GOOD LUCK!

love her
Do not take the deviance course unless you have to. I cannot stress this enough. Her tests are also ridiculous. She includes the most obscure stuff that you, even if you had read the entire textbook, would not remember. In addition she slips feminist undertones into everything. Okay teacher. Incredibly hard tests.
This is an extremely hard class. Do not take it if you are afraid of work. That being said, she is a fantastic teacher. I learned an incredible amount from her courses.
Luton was a great teacher in the aspect of class engagement. Her lectures were interesting, humorous and easy to understand. The only problem is that her exams are ridiculously hard. All application based. I would suggest people to take this class only if they really really need it. If you need it for an essay course, take political science.
Luton is the best professor I've ever had. She loves teaching and this comes across in every lecture. Her exams are application base so if you are used to just memorizing textbooks you won't do well in her class. She's an amazing professor and I wish I could take more classes with her.
Luton is a very interesting woman - she incorporates real-life examples into the theory she teaches, and I love her intolerance of students who do not respect her rules. Don't bring your cell phone, as she's far too interesting to not pay attention to!
This was a hard course! However she is a really good teacher she's very bright and always offers a hand. DON'T BE LATE FOR THIS CLASS! She has no tolerance for people who are late or have cell phones and you will pay the price!
Very misleading teacher, all the assignments, readings and lecture notes are not in depth, exams draw from information that is implied vaguely, not from what is stressed in lecture/notes
I wouldn't advise taking her course if you want a good mark, although it isn't as hard as people make it seem. Just read the whole text and make some lecture notes, you'll get your 80 or whatever you want.
soc of dev is a hard course but kim luton is an amazing teacher. she know's exactly what she's talking about and she always makes it very interesting. don't miss a class because her notes are the most important part. she is a fair grader and a great person to talk to. i really recommend taking soc of deviance, it's one of the best courses i've had
Liked her as a prof. She's intimidating at times, but still really engaging and the material is interesting. One of the only UWO profs I took more than one class with. I know I'm preaching to the choir on this one, but exams are TOUGH and a few humbling grades are inevitable before you get used to her style of questioning.
Professor Luton is tough but she's an amazing prof, one of the best I've had. She's engaging, easy to listen to and she'll teach you a lot. Key to doing well in her class: is print off the lecture notes/slides before class & add side notes. For exams, the lecture material, especially points she adds on to slides is critical to know, so go to class!
Yes, her exams are hard, but they are absolutely fair. If you study hard, you can do well. She's not satan. She's not an awful person. She is actually one of the few profs who genuinely care about you. I absolutely love her, and I love her lectures.
she is a good teacher and you learn a lot listening in her class, however when it comes to marking she is way to hard and very unreasonable. Would not advise to take her class if your aiming to get a high mark. Recently she told me a good mark in university to her was a 70%...idk about you but that doesn't cut it for me!!!
Never went to class and always studied the night before exams. Obviously not recommended but I spent like 3 hours learning bolded terms before each exam and finished with an A. I was always baffled at how low the class avg was for each midterm. Easy Class for me. The only conclusion I can draw is that the content in her lectures was misleading.
Luton is a great prof, but make sure you do the readings because her tests are heavy on them. This class was very interesting and the guest speakers were phenomenal. Don't even think about bringing electronics to class unless you have permission, she can be very scary.
Luton has a reputation for being tough but she was fair. She tells you in the first class that it is not a bird course, so attend lecture, read the textbooks and treat it like a real uni course and you'll be fine.
I loved attending her classes, using the clicker to see how the class responds to daily life questions was always interesting. I also enjoyed how she uses volunteers and does demonstrations to prove her point. Study like crazy for her exams tho, i had an 80 average but I could never pull higher than 69 on her exams
do NOT take this course. The material is very "factual" based and not general. The final is cumulative since september. When I went to office hours, she watched videos and payed her 407 bill.... I'm deans list and couldn't pull off higher than 65 on her exams........ take psych or history instead
Amazing professor. She may be a tough prof but you learn so much with her. It is totally worth it - just stay involved in the class and keep up
She teaches really interesting, but the exam's so tough and you won't get a high marks through this class.
Great Prof, must take notes in class when she lectures and not just from the slides. Exams were tough and covered material from her lectures, slides, readers and texts- so make sure you make great notes
Amazing prof that really knows her stuff! Lectures are extremely interesting. Must do readings, attend lectures, and study! Anyone who complains that her exams are too hard are either not doing the work, or are expecting to memorize info and get a 90. THIS ISN'T HIGH SCHOOL; you MUST be able to apply your knowledge or it is worthless.
Very interesting and funny, one of my favourite professors...exams aren't difficult if you do the readings and go to lectures, but the final exam is brutal.
LUTON IS AMAZING! Attend classes, ask questions, make friends with her. She is super fascinating!Soc 1020
AMAZING- not only is she an incredible prof, she will give you a different perspective on life. Her exams are FAIR its not high school, you have to go to lecture and take good notes. I loved her so much that I am currently in her deviance class and she just keeps getting better! you dont need to be intimidated by her- shes a very interesting woman.
When someone says the exams are fair, that means they are hard. They are not knowledge based but application based. Keep that in mind. So far it's my lowest mark in university and I've been on the Dean's List the last three years.
One of my favourite profs at Western! Her tests aren't the easiest but they are fair and if you study you can pull off a 75+ easily. I'm not sure why everyone on this site makes her out to be such a bad prof. Went to her office hours and she was very helpful. Great prof overall, highly recommend intro Soc.
The most fair prof. She is strict, very intelligent, and her classes have always been my favourite!
She's not a horrible teacher but creates very unfair exams. To place statistic based questions that are totally irrelevant and ignore the main concepts of the course is mind-boggling. Didn't know that knowing how many people are born intersexed is important to sociology. If you are taking this course as an elective then be warned
Just to reiterate, this is NOT a bird course. I came into this course expecting to be bored, but Luton makes the course content very interesting. Yes her exams are hard, but if you do your readings and go to lecture, it IS possible to get good grades (as I have learned). Make sure you actually understand and can apply what you learn
There's a reason she's been teaching this course forever: she's damn good at what she does, and she's good at explaining all these basic concepts of soc, and making it interesting. Yeah, her exams aren't super easy, but the only people I hear complain about them being 'unfair' are those who hate soc and don't study, so..Also she's kinda hilarious.
Incredible professor, very interesting course, very good classroom dynamics. Tests are pretty hard, but aren't weighted too high. Luton can also be a little bit intimidating, but she is very genuine. Luton is by far my favorite professor and anyone would benefit from taking her course.
I took intro soc with professor Luton as well as Women and Crime, and although she seemed really intimidating in first year, I realized in further courses with her that she is actually a VERY nice person to talk to! Definitely MUST go to every lecture (alot of the exam material is not in the text) - and participate! - she will love you for it!
She is a tough marker. Although she explains concepts well, I found her exams to be brutally tough and somewhat unfair. If you can select a different prof for that subject I highly recommend it.
Most amazing professor. She is TOUGH yes, but not impossible. I got an 80 in her class, all you have to do is attend lecture and read the text and STUDY. So realistically, she just puts a little more challenge than the usual professors. By far one of my favourites proffs, loves what she does and loves her students!
she put statistics on the 80 question multiple choice culmative final exam. enough said. also, tutorial assignments are stupid and annoying. don't take this class, seriously.
Very interesting class. First test is easy, second is hard, final... hardest exam ive written to this day. Very indepth questions. Tutorials were the only reason i did well in this course.
Great Professor. Thorough, fun, tough and fair! Work conscientiously and you'll learn a lot and get good grades. Prof. Kim Luton plays a little music at the start of every class (just before class starts), that helps you to relax. She has a wide variety of musical tastes judging by what she plays.
I took this course last year after taking intro soc with her. She is a very interesting lecturer and makes the class relatable. She is easily my favourite professor and most of the comments on here are from people who couldn't do well. The essay is a big mark booster. Listen to her hints, and you'll get your A.
Professor Luton is one of my favorite professors I have had in university. She expects a lot of her students - you must go to class, you must do the readings, and you must participate - but her class is very interesting! Prof Luton can be very intimidating, but if you take the time to talk to her and get to know her as a person she is great!
Luton is an interesting prof in class but honestly this class was the worst. Her exams are hard and I personally do not know anyone that has got above a 75%. You can study for days on the points that are stressed but a lot of questions I have found were minute details that were not emphasized whatsoever. My worst mark in 1st year BY FAR.
very tough prof.. expected this class to be a bird course but not at all! lectures are boring but definitely helpful because exams are very tricky
very interesting but tough prof....
Unless you're majoring in Soc I would recommend NOT taking the class. The lectures are interesting, but the novelty wears off quickly and the exams are VERY difficult. She also doesn't post very detailed lecture notes, which makes studying difficult too. Save yourself the headache and pick a different class.
Luton is hands down the best prof at Western! People whine and complain about her exams but the bottom line is you're in university so suck it up, go to class and STUDY. She's an amazing person and the reason why I know what I want to do with my life. Her passion is inspiring. I have 80s in her classes, and a 92 on the essay for 2259. Do the work.
She doesn't allow laptops in class and her notes aren't great, so that can make studying a bit toughter, but her lectures are extremely interesting, she engages the class and the content is good. If you show up to class and read the textbook, you can get a good mark. TAKE THE CLASS.
By far the BEST professor I've had in university. Get over the 'myth of Luton'. She is genuinely concerned for her students, both class related and not. She expects a lot from you, but that is because she wants you to succeed. Your voice will always be heard and valued, and this class makes you feel like a contributing student. AMAZING PROF!!!
Honestly, there's this myth about how scary Luton is but it's totally not true. She is one of my favourite professors. She explains everything well, she's funny and she really wants to get to know hr students. E only thing is that her exams are difficult. You really have to know what your doing to do well on them. She is amazing and I loved her.
Exams are brutal. Tutorials are the only reason people do okay
Luton is a great prof. She's tough and her exams are had but her lectures are very interesting. Most people find sociology to be really boring, but she makes it fun. If you read your textbook (and take notes as you read it) and go to class you'll be fine. She generally cares about her students and wants you to do well, which is why she's so tough
Even though her classes are interesting, her notes aren't detailed at all and we're usually behind schedule. Most people pass due to tutorials.
Professor Luton is an amazing prof if you pay attention, show up to lecture and make a conscious effort to keep up with the readings. Her lectures are engaging and she uses many good examples to connect the concepts to everyday life. Her exams are extremely tough but if you show up and pay attention and make the extra effort you will totally fine!
Professor Luton is an amazing teacher; she rewards people who show up to class, do the readings, and ask questions. Some people have this image of her being tough or picking favourites, but I think she just creates great relationships with her students, and those who bother to go to office hours reap the rewards of her help and support.
Although Luton is not an easy marker, this class was rewarding on many levels. A LOT of reading (100-150pg a week) - but they are all interesting. A lot of work to be done in a short amount of time, but as long as you do it, the grade will reflect it. Wouldn't recommend if you need high 80s or 90s, but great course. Glad I took it.
I have had Professor Luton twice, and would highly recommend taking her courses. The content and her exams can be tough, but 4442fg is extremely interesting, and you'll find that she's actually pretty funny. Participation is key and so is attendance! Don't be scared to ask her for any help or clarification.
She is tough, but is what I believe what a professor should be. You have to go to lectures, and you have to do your readings. However, she makes her lectures interesting and her expectations are fair. Don't blame her if you do poorly, lets be honest, you started studying the day before the exam...
Her exams were ridiculous and basically impossible to do well on. Never take her class!! If you do you will most definitely regret it!
Lectures are fine, but tests are really tough
funny & witty, overall a great professor.
Professor Luton conducts her classes in a massively unfair manner. She will not tell you the level of participation required and will create ways to bring grades down. She does not actively teach the classes and is probably the worst professor I have ever experienced at Western. She brings down grades based on personal liking for the student.
Not a terrible course, the grades are meant to be from 65-68%., so expect a mark around that if you put in an average amount of work. Exams are pretty tough, best way to get marks are through the tutorial.
I actually really enjoyed Luton's lectures. I thought they were very interesting and she did well to engage a class so big. But exams are almost impossible, you can study forever and still not do well. Tutorials are a HUGE help to your grade. On the last exam our average was 58%, I was hoping for a curve, but nothing. This class takes a lot of work
I love Luton as a lecturer and learn so much in all her courses. That said, as a professor, if you put a statistic on a full year cumulative exam that came from a February guest lecture with no PowerPoint, you really need to evaluate the fairness of your exam.
Prof. Luton is honestly my favourite professor, but her class is extremely hard to do really well in. The exams feel impossible. I could study for a month and still get no higher than 62-66. Overall though, it is extremely worthwhile to take this class. It's so interesting, and Luton is amazing.
She's a great professor and makes lectures very interesting. However, you could not study enough and do well on her exams. Your tutorial marks will help your mark out a lot.
Absolutely wild, and lectures on her part aren't too bad. Extremely tough marker and exams are tricky.. Class averages ranged 55%-65% on the exam and midterms. Lovely woman, and very interesting but can be complex material and she makes it more complicated.
Worst excuse for a prof. Any time a question is asked, you get a rude response back that is unhelpful and sounds as if she's too entitled to answer a student. She marks extremely unfairly and seems to make the course expectationswording of exams confusing on purpose. How can you say you want to be a teacher and then act as if you're too good forit
Great lecturer, awful exam maker. Her exams will leave your anus traumatized for the entire year. Mine still isn't quite back to its original form.
Certainly not there to help all her students. Exhibits textbook favoritism behaviour. I would stay away from her classes.
If you aren't a deadbeat and actually demonstrate a willingness to learn and succeed, prof. Luton is a pure a-lister. She is very knowledgable - you can learn a lot in her courses, but you must be prepared to be engaged for the full duration of the course. Recommend for upper year courses, but caution that she doesn't have much patience for 1st yrs
Professor Luton is one of the best things in the Sociology Department at Western. Her lectures are incredible, and she actively works to keep you engaged during classes. Her exams are tough-expect that, and get over it. Study for 2 weeks, prepare, you know, do what you came to school for! You will always remember her fondly, as I did, and do.
This was the best class I have ever taken in University. Some students complained about the structure of students running the class, but I loved it. Great way to get everyone to do the readings and have meaningful discussion in class. Material was great, I looked forward to reading for the class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING THIS WITH LUTON. Amazing.
-She is known across campus as being a VERY tough grader. -Go to class so she can explain the topics the way it will be seen on exams, or else you will be caught off guard when exams come around
I was interested in socio cause i took SAP in high school but this was the WORST class of my first year. Doesnt matter how much you study the exams are unfair. Only saving grace is tutorial; I recommend the friday morning class because my ta (looks foreign) was really ecnouraing. material is enlightening, but evaluations are entirely unjust.
Didn't really learn anything in this class and exams were totally unfair, the highest mark out of all the exams was an 84 and the avg was around 59, switch out if u have her!
such a lovely woman, i loved going to her lectures. this was one of my fav classes... too bad i almost failed! if you don't need this course, i highly suggest taking the half year courses of soc. Exams are EXTREMELY difficult... averages on midterms were about 57%. No matter how hard you study they are impossible. Read the text book!!
Do not take this course. Exams are impossible to do well on no matter how much you study. Assignments are marked subjectively by the TA's. Participation marks are also dolled out very unfairly. Your grade will not reflect your effort and this course will cause so much stress.
She is the worst. I have an 83 average throughout my three years at Western, and while I put in the time and effort for Luton's classes, she simply disliked me and made sure my grade reflected her attitude. She is vindictive, unpleasant, and simply not nice. No prof should behave like this. Avoid her at all costs.
her exams are very challenging. the average for most of the exams in my year were in the high 50's-low 60's. be prepared to attend every single lecture and study hard
She cares about her students and gives good lectures but I did not find her very approachable. Once she gets to know you she is very nice but is intimidating at first. Her midterms were very hard and difficult to study for and even if you do study, you do not feel prepared. She often has to bell-curve because her average is too low.
Doesn't let you use a laptop, have to hand write all notes. Lectures are a pain to go for only an hour but she takes 10-15 minutes trying to figure out her powerpoint in the beginning so basically each class is around 30 minutes. Exams are difficult because she includes lecture questions, textbook questions, and questions from the tutorial book
Kim Luton is very knowledgeable in her field and offers great, informative lectures. Unfortunately she is an extremely tough grader, so you have to be on top of your game at all times or your mark will suffer greatly. Exams are tough and you will have to pay attention to tiny details that most profs won't think is significant.
Absolutely amazing professor. I have taken three of her classes, Soc 1020, 3312, and 3358. While sociology can be a bit disheartening for the first year student, the low average is necessary. These are things that change in her upper year courses, and she cares deeply about each and every one of her students. I would recommend any of her classes!
Amazing professor. High expectations, achievable if you work for it. Shock to most new university students who are used to easy high grades in High School. She does not believe you are all special snowflakes. She wants to see you put in effort. She makes you listen and apply you knowledge. Not easy but one of the best courses I've ever taken.
She handed out tissues during our exam "just in case we felt like crying". I don't think making fun of your students stress right before they're about to take an exam is remotely funny.
Very difficult exam with questions that were very obviously not taken from this year's course material. It's possible to do well if you put in a lot of effort, but no matter how hard you study for the exam be prepared to get a bad mark.
This prof can be nice but she is very stern, her tests are also very hard and there is a lot of them! I have a 80 percent average and my grade in this class really does not reflect that. If you want to do well you have to not just attend the class and do all of the readings of which there are many, you have to be fully switched on all of the time!
When I initially enrolled in Kim's class, all of my friends told me to get out due to the "myth of the Luton". Many believe that she is an impossible professor and that you cannot succeed in her classes. Her class has proven the myth to be false - this is my favourite class this year! You will succeed if you work hard. I currently have over 80.
Professor Luton is by far my favourite professor at Western. I had her first year for sociology 1020 and swore I would never take another class with her. However, her upper year courses are so different. She cares immensely about her students and wants to see you work hard. If you put in the work she will recognize it! 100% recommend her classes
Very passionate about what she teaches and can be very funny. Beware -- you will not succeed unless you adhere to the rigid ideological boundaries which are dogmatically centred around intersectional theory. If you value intellectual diversity, you may want to avoid her classes, and this one in particular.
Horrible prof. Absolutely heartless, uncaring, rude and not helpful. Created a very unfair exam which the whole class complained about. Submitted the final exam mid-course with content that we neither covered not was listed in the texts. Avoid if possible
Easily my favourite prof in the Soc Department. Ashby is extremely inspirational and articulate in her lectures. She uses relevant examples and is obviously passionate about what she teaches. HOWEVER** her powerpoint are vague so show up to class. Her exams are a complete mess and almost feel as if they're set up to fail students. Lots of readings.
Worst professor I ever had in the sociology department. She absolutely tanked my average with her incredibly unfair exams. She would ask questions about things she never taught, and would demand that you picked answers that she wanted based on her own personal beliefs and values.
disgusting exams. not sure how they are allowed in general to be honest.
I respect how driven and successful Prof. Ashby is, having pretty much created the Criminology module at Western. That being said, her exams are a complete mess and the class average sits around 55%. She is hardheaded, unapproachable and insensitive. I enjoyed the class itselfs but her exams will ruin your grade, regardless of how much you study.
I took several classes with Luton during my undergrad - her intro 1020 class was tough but fair but not nearly as well done as her other classes. Her upper year courses are where she really shines - she cares deeply about her students. If you work hard and show an interest in the material, you'll do well.
Dont. Just dont. Worst professor i have ever encountered. Didnt even bother to teach, and the way that the course is organized only hinders student performance. She teaches a lot of interesting courses but she is a terrible professor and it isnt worth it.
