Dr. MacLin knows her stuff. She is about 35, so she relates very well with her students. She is the best professor I've had in my 3 years at UNI. If you get a chance, take a class with her.
Expects far too much for a Gen Ed class in Psych. Good for Major classes, a very poor Gen Ed prof, however.

I LOVE THIS PROF! She is genuinely interested in her students, she loves what she teaches, and she's not hard at all. I would recommend her as highly as possible.
This class is very interesting and she makes it really fun.
Is young so tries too hard sometimes to be hip. Is very knowledgable and mock trial makes class interesting. Doesn't give much direction sometimes though.
Does a lot of lecture and powerpoints which are boring
She's a lot of fun and I find her humor hilarious! Even in a huge class she manages to connect and make things seem personal. Powerpoints can be boring, but it's a fun, easy, and interesting class!
Does lectures over powerpoint, has 1 paper which she grades easily, 4 tests, and lots of extra credit. Homework online and really cool. Interesting lecture and relates well w/ students. Funny girl
Lose her ego, takes attendance
She's awesome to listen to, and her tests are resonable. She takes attendence like 3 times all semester.
Absolutely wonderful, takes attendence only if no one shows up to class, tests are very reasonable, many oppertunities for extra credit, make sure you do all of the homework, have to write one paper, but she grades on the content, not how well its written
good class
Is happy to answer questions, so don't be afraid to ask. She does ALL homework on computer, except for one paper that you hand in. The homework is easy, and the test aren't bad as long as you review the notes.
Very good professor and psychology and law is a very interesting class.
Great woman who knows her stuff and tries to keep it interesting. Some profs don't even try to keep you awake, but she remembers what it's like to be in your seat. She's fun to listen to.

Extremely fun teacher and class. Easy as long as you do all the assignments.
Great teacher. take her and you will love the class!
This has been my favorite class this semester! You will love the class. She's funny and keeps things interesting. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit, and the homework is easy as long as you take the time to do it.
Very nice, lectures easy to listen to, easy note taking from power point. Homework easy and not too time consuming, although sometimes seems like a lot. Fairly easy quizzes, lots of extra credit. Rarely need to crack the textbook, just study from notes. Pretty easy A, but you'll learn a lot too.
she is a fun teacher, she is very helpful and the class is very interesting. The mock trial is fun to do. She also is a very good looking.
I loved this professor! She makes class so fun and interesting, and she occasionally makes funny jokes. I was thinking about psychology for a major before entering this class, and she definitely helped further my interest in the subject. Tests are easy.
She is a very good, nice and friendly teacher. I really enjoyed her class. She kept the lectures interesting, and made funny jokes! I would recommend this class for anyone who is interested! Im definetly going to take any of her classes if I can!
Great class, very easy to listen to. Online assignments so have a pc, quizzes are ok if you study. Great professor
Give excellent lectures. Too bad she is married.
Great teach who made everything interesting. Wednesday was movie day and most all of my friends got a high A overall. One 8 page book report is required but if you do it you should get an A.
Fun class. You get to do a mock trial. I feel that she doesn't do much teaching herself. Mainly the group project, log book, paper (trial stuff), some EASY homework on WebCT, some summaries, group presentations, and quizzes. I feel like my class members are the teachers here, not her. It is fun!
Amazing professor, cool person. Anything you need help with you can ask her. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone!
She's a good professor. Very amusing.
She is awesome! Lectures are fun and interesting. Relates class material to life. Tests are easy! TA's hold study sessions to tell you what's on the tests. 1-2 homework assignments a week. 8 page book report. 5 tests. Comprehensive final. offers 20pts extra credit. Very easy professor, take her!!
I think that she should split her paycheck with the TA's, since they do more work than she does. We constantly get stuck watching movies b/c of her absences. The rest of the time is basically group projects...so when does she really teach...that's the question I want to know.
Very interesting, funny, and easy to understand. Lectures are not boring, but full of information and easy to listen too. If you listen during class and take notes, you really don't need the book. I would recommend her to everyone. Great teacher.
Good sense of humor, open to others and about self
shes really funny and knows that college studnets have a life outside of class. Lots of internet assignments, but they are easy for the most part, you just got to keep up with them and not get behind. I learned a lot from her
Didn't care for her attitude. Thought she was a great teacher, but really just average.
I love her so much. She was so understanding and made class interesting. It was one of the only classes I could stay awake for. The tests are pretty easy and the assignments are just common sense stuff. I would take another class with her ANYDAY!
She is not helpful to her students, nor is she very clear on when assignments are due. She tells the class to check the syllabus, and the due date isn't on there half the time. The mock trial is a cool idea, but in reality, its the last two weeks of class, not the entire semester. Not worth it.
I hated this class with a passion. It's one of those classes were the clock couldn't move any slower. Random attendence grading... Oh, and be prepared to spend many hours outside of this class doing busy work.... Glad I'm out of there.
Kim is really good at what she does. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she loves her job. She's a good teacher, and wants to see her students do well - talking to her outside of class you can really tell that she's very smart. Her tests are pretty simple. Take good notes, and that's all you'll need for the tests.
Choose another psych class if you are able to...

Go to class, take notes, and pay attention... you get an A. MacLin is funny and explains everything so it is very easy to understand. Cool person. Highly recommend.
One word: AWESOME!!!!!!!! I really loved this class: be a witness it makes it easier!!!
Kim is an awesome teacher. She is very laid back, but is extremely intelligent and has good things to say. Well organized teacher who is interested in students success. I would recommend her to other
She was alright. Sort of hard to understand her lectures....I studied a lot and struggled to get a c.
I thought she was a really good teacher. She's fun and uses good examples. True- there's lots of busy work but it's not so bad. Tests were easy, book report.
Professor Maclin was an excellent teacher! I would definitly recommend her, she uses WebCT which is awesome and makes it impossible to flunk if you keep up. She gives homework almost everyday, but its done online so you can work ahead! The tests are mostly just out of notes and class discussions!! She gives lots of extra credit!
I would not recommend taking from her. People say she is so cool but she is the most unorganized person i know. Research methods was harder than the other professors make it. You can work your ass off but she picks favorites
don't take from her. The other professors for this class are better. She is a nice person but is very selfish. She always has excuses when she is at fault for something. Overall, she just doesn't pull her weight in class.
Kim is an excellent proffesor and I highly recommend her. Her lectures are always interesting and she has a great sense of humor. She uses webct online and there are a lot of assignments, but I did learn a lot from them. Overall she is helpfull, kind, funny, and an enjoyable instructor. I highly recommend taking intro to psych with her.
She was an alright professor. Lots of homework though, just to keep you busy. Quizzes are pretty easy if you study. Go to the study sessions & they'll tell you what's gonna be on the quizzes! Only really use your book for the homework. 1 book report, which she grades pretty easy. Only took attendance once. She usually makes the lectures interesting
Amazing Professor! Go to class and take notes and you will get a good gradea nd actually learn something! I found it helpful to read the textbook. She gives many extra credit opportunities! Take her!
Loved her! She made the class really fun and relevant to my life. I got a little tired of some of the assignments, but they weren't that bad if you just planned ahead. She is really fun and easy to get along with, and tells great stories! I would highly recommend her.
Great teacher, loves her job and wants students to learn. Lots of assignments, but they are very simple and easy. Plus you're able to work ahead. Tells excellent stories and uses video clips to make things more interesting. Fantastic! Take her class!
Kim is the professor that you want if you are looking for a quality education that is both demanding and fruitful. She wants her students to learn and is willing to offer her time and effort, so her students really understand the objective.
Just awful. She will undermine everything you have learned previously. She will also have higher expectations for you than she has for herself.
Had Honors Psych with MacLin, it was easier than high school psych. The class is such a joke, take it if you want an easy A. Half of the class is online and half is in class. Tests are just a brain storm of what you learned and the final is a piece of cake. Anything in the book was never covered in class or needed on tests.
Great Prof overall. Really interesting and makes class fun. Extremely intelligent and loves her job. Mock Crime/Trial is also a great learning tool that she uses! TAKE TAKE TAKE
Great class; I really enjoyed the mock crime/trial. Hybrid class designs is nice. Also, she's writing the book for this class so she emails you the chapters. She's fun and explains things very well. I'll be taking her again.
She's a great teacher. This class kept me very busy, but I learned a lot. The tests are very easy and class is hybrid style. Not hard if you show up, do some reading, and pay attention. She explains things very well and is easy to follow. Also tells great stories.
Have taken two classes with her and she is a fun person. She is always accommodating of issues but there is a lot of busy work. I disliked the partially online, partially in class hybrid set-up personally. Heavy on reading in Motivation/Emotion but not at all in PsyLaw though both are heavy on blog assignments. She is unorganized a lot though.
The best professor at UNI. Hands down.
Dr. MacLin is probably the best professor at UNI.
Half online, half in class. 2 essays are due each week: one is about an article or movie, the next is about the chapter. Only go to class one day out of the week and the assignment for that lecture is due before class so there's no point in going! Super difficult at grading and has zero feedback.
Best professor hands down. I have never had someone be so kind, helpful, and generous with her time! She will do whatever it takes for you to succeed, just ask!! Such a great class! I loved it.
My rating does not accurately describe her. She was my favorite professor of any class I took! She is so knowledgeable, fun, and down-to-earth. Lectures are very interesting. One of the few classes where I felt I got my tuition money worth. There is lots of reading & blogging required, but I learned so much! You watch great movies too
She is such a great teacher, and this class is awesome. Reading and blogs due every week, but it's so worth it. Probably my favorite psych class ever. Blogs are graded pretty tough, but the final is graded very easy. Take this class!!
Explains everything very well in class. Two blog posts are due every week, but that's because she only holds class on Thursdays most weeks. Quizzes are easy, and she gives study guides telling you exactly what will be on them.
Love this professor. She knows what she is talking about and keeps students entertained in lecture. Take intro to psych with Kim if possible!
MacLin is a great professor who is super passionate about her field. The class is pretty time consuming because of the two blog posts every week. You can do as much extra credit as you want, and if you go to the study sessions, the quizzes should be easy for you. There is one paper that you set your due date for, and she grades it pretty easily.
Kim is a great professor and most of her lectures are pretty interesting. My only complaint is that the T.A.s grade the blog posts and I don't understand what makes my peers qualified to grade my success. They're not even graduate students - these are undergrads that I have other classes with and frankly are pretty unremarkable outside this class.
Very knowledgeable about subject matter and gives great examples. Book is a must as you write blogs 2 times per week. Learned a lot about motivation and emotion of psychology and would recommend this class and professor to everyone.
Dr. MacLin is a fantastic professor. She's knowledgeable, fun, and really seems to love her job. She presents the material in a way that's really easy to understand and is always open to students visiting her during office hours for help.
She is a great teacher and very understandable
Take her for Careers in psych. On the first day she says if you come to class engaged and do the assignments there's no reason you shouldn't leave with an A. No tests, attendance isn't mandatory but you'd be dumb not to go. Class is discussion based, come prepared with questions. Overall I loved this class!
Great professor! Would definitely take her again. Very helpful and fair grader!
This class is a ton of work. you will write 2 500 word blog posts every week, as well as read a chapter once a week. Tests are over very specific material. Fun to listen to in lecture.
LOVED HER! Class only meets on Thursday's unless you have a quiz then you go to class on Tuesday and take it and leave. Homework is 2 blog posts a week and 1 book report and you choose the due date. She makes her lectures fun, and the quizzes aren't that hard.
2 blogs due a week, each a 550 word minimum. Her lectures are interesting, but her quizzes are not a reflection of what is taught. Good professor. Pretty funny. It's easy to do well in the class if you do well on the blogs.
Seems nice, easy class, but she acts like she doesn't care at all about her job. Constantly complaining about how early a 9:30 class is, kept her coat on all through lecture like she couldn't wait to get out of there. ZERO feedback on ANY assignment unless you take her time and yours outside of class to email her. Lectures add nothing to readings.
Lectures are useless, by the time she lectures on a chapter you've already turned in all assignments relevant to the material. If you thought you understood something and you didn't, too bad, because the assignments are already turned in. Lectures add absolutely nothing to the book. EASY grader, meet the word count on blogs and you get an A.
I took the class online and it isn't terrible. There are 2 posts each week, 3 extra assignments, a 5 page and an 8 page paper. Watch movies and do a post over it most weeks which you have to get. At first the TAs grade easy but are told to grade hard later and make it really difficult. Lot of busy work at the end of the class but there are no tets
You turn in 2 blog posts a week, 3 other assignments, a book report and a final paper. Instructions are not very clear and she provides no feedback on grades. She takes forever to respond to emails as well as post grades. I would not recommend unless you are looking for a lot of work with little to no feedback.
I took intro to psychology as an honors course with Professor MacLin. She is super knowledgeable about her area so the lectures were great. All we had for assignments were two blogs a week which we always got 100% for, a book report, and a final poster. Would definitely take again.
The blogs are very easy. She is not very clear on when things are due. She accepts late work. She failed me because I turned something in the day after the class was "over". If it was not a mandatory class I would never take it again. She replies super late, & gives little to no feedback. Very frustrating.
Two 500 word papers a week, but once you get the hang of them they don't take too long. Study guides were a good indicator of what would be on her quizzes, so as long as you study a bit they aren't bad. So much extra credit so as long as you do decent on the papers and quizzes you should get an A.
I have taken several classes with her. Overall, she teaches interesting classes. She has a fun, spunky personality which makes time fly. The downfalls: LOTS of papers and reading, no feedback, does not respond to emails well, very forgetful, super unorganized. A friend had her write letters to grad school and Kim turned them in over a MONTH late.
Super funny. I have only been in this class for a month or so now and I couldn't enjoy her more.
A great lecture teacher, but assigns so much busy work. She is very unorganized and does't explain her expectations very well. If you take intro to psych with her, get ready for two 500 word essays every week. It gets to be a lot, especially if you are taking other tough courses.
Motivation and Emotion with Maclin is a lot of work but the topic is extremely fascinating and you come away as a better writer. You can receive feedback on your posts if you ask but remember that the TAs grade the blog posts (though not the papers). Good opportunities for extra credit and Maclin is hilarious.
Great class. You have a lot of reading to do and 2 blogs due each week. Not bad overall but you will work for your grade. She gets back to you in a timely fashion if you do have any questions. I have taken her for two classes and would take another with her without evening thinking about it. Would for sure recommend.
Motivation and Emotion was a very interesting course with Maclin. We had no exams but had a decent amount of work. Two assignments due every week and you had to watch a 2 hour long movie every week as well outside of class. I love the professor but maybe wouldn't take this class again
I had MacLin for my intro to psychology course and I absolutely loved her! She makes the lectures worth going to because she will occasionally give out random extra credit point just for showing up. Before every test, she emails a list of topic to review & those are on the test! She is great at explaining terms and concepts for college students.
Very organized, entertaining, has clear lectures, and prepares you well for quizes.
Professor MacLin was incredible! Some people see her class having a lot of work, but it is definitely manageable. Only had class one day a week, the other being "online". Her lectures were so interesting as she really cares about the topic. She has great connections and makes things very easy to understand! I really enjoyed her!
Lectures were so boring and there is a lot of online homework that i usually forgot to do.
This class is super easy. You do 2 written assignments (400 words each) and a 5 question quiz over the week chapter. All assignments are due Thursday by midnight. She gives extra credit for attendance, only downside is that she takes forever to respond to your email for questions.
She sounds like a wonderful professor by the way she talks. I wish I had the experience most people claimed to have she did awful transitioning to online. There was a paper on every chapter which was fine but then also write a paper over a random really long movie. There' not enough space for more examples but lots of busy work that did not help.
For an intro class, the amount of time spent just writing the two 400-word essays every week really adds up. If you don't like writing do NOT take this class. No tests or exams, only short 5-question quizzes every week along with the two papers, all due at midnight. It's an easy class, but it's very time-consuming.
5 point quizzes after every chapter, no exams, one paper on book. Very educational class. Get ready to write short answers though. It's a pretty easy class if you put in the work. Tons of EXTRA CREDIT!!!!!!!
Dr.MacLin is very unorganized and unprofessional. She takes forever to grade things, respond to emails, and the class lacks a lot of structure. I had emailed her four different times regarding a grade and got a response, yet no action fixing her mistake. She then didn't bother to answer any of the other emails and just left the grade as is.
I've seen may mixed reviews about Dr.Maclin, but for an online class I think she runs it very well. Now, this is not an online class to take if you want a super easy A, but you may actually learn something. Alot of the assignments are just busy work, but she is pretty cool about extensions as long as you communicate. SO many extra opportunities
She's a good professor and gives clear instructions and expectations on what to and not to do. She is reasonable and lets you re-do assignments (in this course) that you didn't do well enough in. She is very lenient on when assignments need to be turned in by. Overall a fair and respectable professor.
Maclin was a great professor! This class was online but any issues, questions, or concerns I had I knew I could email her and get a response in a very short period. For my class, we wrote 1-2 400-word papers a week, along with a quiz every week. The final was a paper on what we learned in the class. These things can be graded toughly though
This is the second class I have taken with Professor Maclin and I would not recommend it. There are 2-3 weekly 500-word assignments and she grades them very harshly. There is a lot of reading and writing, and you are required to watch a weekly movie, which you sometimes have to pay for. She does give out extra credit for attending the weekly zoom.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take psych with Maclin. I read the reviews here last semester and thought people were bitter for no reason, but now I know what she's really like. I spent 10 hours every single week working on assignments - 2 essays, 400-words each. She forces you to buy her $90 book. Protect your sanity & stay away from her class.
She definitely cares about her students, but assigns too much homework for the credit received.
I got diagnosed with depression. Showed proof of diagnosis, letter from my psychiatrist, even went to the dean of students 2 weeks in, but she didn't listen to anyone. Don't make the same mistake as me. Go to disability access services for your rights. You'd think a psych prof of all people would understand depression, but nope - not this woman.
I would not recommend taking Maclin for anything. She is a harsh grader and assigns a lot of homework for the credit given. Every week you write 2, 400-word papers, as well as a short quiz. From my experience, she does email back within a timely manner but is not thorough with the information that she gives.
Dr. MacLin is probably in my top 5 UNI professors of all time. Granted, class wasn't in person nor did I meet her on the other side of the computer screen. She is not intimidating to contact, and I really appreciated that about her. Assignments aren't hard and there's only 2 "big" projects (including the final), so it's a more stress-free class.
Maclin's class covers fascinating topics, but be prepared for a heavy workload. The weekly assignments and movie reviews can be a lot, but the professor is engaging and offers helpful feedback. Using Unstuck AI and the textbook helped me manage the workload.
The textbook required is a 90 dollar non-optional textbook that SHE wrote on a website that won't let you print it out or access it without the code. There is no other cheaper or used option. You do not get to sell the code. Take it with someone else, not someone who would profit off students with her own required $90 book.
Took PSYCH1001 online, and it was one of the easiest classes I've taken. Just summarize the text and you'll get a simple A. If you can't do a simple reading every week, this class isn't for you. Grading criteria is unclear, but I've never gotten less than a 10/10 on every assignment. There is also extra credit worth five points weekly.
This class is very easy to do well in, however it's just a lot of busy work. I don't believe I learned anything I didn't already know. She has you buy a textbook that she wrote and it's about 100 dollars. You can't share textbooks because quizzes are on the textbook and I think that is very greedy. She has you write a lot for assignments.
Easy class with a lot of busy work. She takes forever to grade (I'm talking half the semester had no grades, then no more until finals week.) She seems funny but one thing is, she writes the required textbook and there is no way around buying it as the quizzes are done through the website.
This is an easy passing class when you do the work. You can work ahead, and everything is clear in the instructions for what you are expected to do. Class doesn't last the full semester, which is nice too.
