He's way hard. He requires twice as much work as the credits of the class are. Also, you better have thick skin because he will make fun of you at some point in the semester.
He is absolutely awesome! He really has unparalleled enthusiasm for the subject and has really helped me learn.
Good teacher and will keep you awake. He says he is easy, but the class is challenging.
The man needs to stop making powerpoint slides directly from the text. If it weren't for pop quizes you'd be better off reading the book and taking the tests.
You will learn a lot in this class although not much will be from the lectures. His lectures are strictly read from slides with some elaboration thrown in here and there. Good class though.
If you want a teacher who copies the book on to power point and reads it to the class he is the man. He tests at a higher standared than he teaches. The tests are confusing and unfair.
I guess he teaches alright but his tests are confusing. His powerpoint presentations do no reflect anything new. The contenct comes straight from the book. As a person he is funny, but he sucks too. If he oesn't sympathize with you from the beginning you better be careful! He is a very smart idiot!
This was the best class i've ever had by far. Dr. O'Neill is by far the best teacher i've ever had, he is so caring for the students and his lectures are so understandable he streached me and made me think outside the box. The best class i've ever had! Would highly recomend it!
Excellent Teacher
Amazing! Just talk to him if you are having issues and he will help out! His excitement for the subject is incredible. His powerpoint may be from the book, but notice that about 1/3 of the discussion is from publications less than 2 years old! If you want a class that will prepare you to be a scientist, this is the one!
Excellent
Professor O'Neill was extremely helpful. This was a tough class, but he made the material very reasonable and interesting. He doesn't trick you on the tests, and he loves the material. I had a great experience.
Very nice guy, not stuck-up at all, and I wish he'd write an autobiography some day. If you can get him to tell you some of his life stories, those will be the best part of the class. As for the rest, there's a reason they set an A at 85%. Tests are hard and stressful, and most of the time I felt like the class was either going too fast or too slow
Oneill is a nice professor, but i really didn't care for his style of teaching. Tests are all free response. There was ZERO outside hw, which is fine if you can manage to keep up with the reading. He teaches SUPER fast and it's very complex stuff. 85 is an A, which is good, but tests are VERY hard and there is a TON to memorize and study for.
Professor O'Neill is awesome! He really cares about his students and is very personable and approachable. He did a good job making our 8am class entertaining...he has an Irish accent and says funny Irish things all the time. He goes REALLY fast so make sure you hold onto the edge of your seat and take really good notes, otherwise you will be los
Super hard class. You have to have a really good background in biology because he answers many questions with, "you should have learned that already". Average on the test is 66% average on daily iclicker is 40%.
Pros: 80% is an A-, very good prep for BIO/MMBIO majors, O'Neill is knowledgable. Cons: Fast pace, very in depth, all free-response tests. Truth is, if you study hard and have good TA's, you should be fine. But it's certainly not an easy A.
Professor O'neill is a very spiritual very cool person. However, he moves SO fast...He doesn't assign homework or reading he just posts the slides about 2 weeks after you had that lecture. If you are good at learning things on your own and not having any structure in a class then this is the guy for you. I do not recommend him if you want an A
There is a strong disconnect between what is said and what actually happens. We were repeatedly told we weren't expected to memorize much of the content, but then the test is mostly regurgitating facts. Also the TAs are not helpful and don't seem to sync of with the professor's expectations. there's a problem when the median on the test is 65%...
Dr. O'Neill is an amazing man, but his class didn't work for me. There's very little structure and reading assignments aren't given out. Toward the end of the semester, we started having very helpful quizzes every now and then to make sure we were on top of things, but for the most part it's easy to drift in this class. A LOT OF MATERIAL.
Best Professor ever! Great teacher, makes class engaging! I felt like I actually learned, not just memorized pointless material. The course material is not easy, but that's not Dr. O'Neill's fault. He tries to make things very clear and more than fair for students. He is very approachable and wants your success which is rare! Amazing mentor.
O'Niell is pretty laid-back & loves to joke around. His lectures are light-hearted & interesting. He has a strong testimony & bears it often, I've felt the Spirit so often in class! He knows you're coming from high school & is more than willing to work with you. Take advantage of TAs, go to class, do all the homework- you'll be more than fine!
He made sure that everyone understood what he taught during class. If you study enough, the tests aren't that difficult. Really awesome teacher!
OPINION- I like Professor O'Neill-shares gospel lessons that are touching & inspirational. But, I struggled through this class. The tests are really difficult-I averaged 64% on the multiple choice and 44% on the written portions (3 tests). Weekly quizzes-easy if you read the chapter in the book, difficult without studying. Grade scale 85% for an A.
Professor O'Neill is a fun lecturer, but he does not prepare you for the tests at all. They are nothing like what he explains on class, go to the TA reviews or you'll shooting in the dark. His class isn't super structures and it always seemed he was repeated himself on things that weren't relevant in the end.
He is super hilarious, but I wasn't a huge fan of his teaching style. He basically just reads from the slides, but he goes so fast it is difficult to take notes, and I didn't usually understand what he was talking about, and mostly ended up tuning out. His tests are hard, but his A is an 85%
Professor O'neill was very nice with the assignments, quizes, and papers. The tests were as difficult as you might suspect in the subject. He really tries to help his students succeed. Also for us at least he set his A at 85%, that was really handy in getting that A.
Hilarious guy, but I was disappointed in how wasted class time felt. In class we spent 30% of our time covering information he told us was not important. 40% joking around and 30% on test material. If you like a class where you dont need to focus and will still get an A, this is your class.
Prof. O'Neill is a great guy. Very Irish and very proud of it. His lectures are entertaining, but very information heavy, so take great notes. If you don't pay attention in class and want a good grade, you will have to read the textbook very thoroughly. For our class, the A cutoff was 85%, which was generous. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
He's a really funny guy, my favorite professor this semester. He makes class interesting and funny, and makes it really easy to get an A. He places emphasis on making sure everyone is doing okay, and shows a real care for your education, learning, and grade in the class. I would take him for every class if I could.
Goes way too fast in class, makes it impossible to take any notes. The tests are a major portion of your grade. However, an A- is curved to 80% which makes it very easy to get an A (which is an 85%). I wouldn't take him again as I don't feel like I have learned very much of the material.
Dr. O is a cool guy, super funny with great stories but his teaching style isn't great. There are often times where there will be over-complicated pictures/diagrams on slides and we won't need to know them, and he goes super fast. An A is 85% which is really nice. Tests aren't too bad if you study but study hard. Papers are just busy work but easy.
Don't take this class unless you have to, but if you do have to, take it from Bro. O'Neil. He goes fast and is hard to follow sometimes but is a pretty easy grader and really cares about the students. He's funny and can be convinced to extend deadlines or cancel class when the test is open. Also, super Irish and it's great.
Professor O'Neill is the best professor I have ever had. This class is hard and you definitely have to work for your grade, but his grading scale is very fair. I talked one-on-one with him several times and was very impressed each time. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
Dr. O'neill is a fantastic teacher! He is so smart and so dedicated! Take this class from him in the fall! The TAs are really good too because you can talk with them about tests and homework and they explain why you got the grade you did or give points back if deserved. Super fun class!
MMBIO 121 is a great class. Professor O'Neill is very passionate about microbiology and does a great job of keeping Christ and the plan of salvation central to everything he teaches. Beyond that, you will want the textbook, because the tests are strongly based on the book material. Also an A in this class is 85%.
Great lecturer, funny and personable, always answers questions in class. Take good lecture notes or you won't pass the tests, as the course material doesn't follow the book directly, and while the powerpoints are all posted online, they don't always line up with what he says in class. Tests are hard but he grades on a nice curve.
I could literally listen to him talk all day (his accent is amazing!). He really does care about his students! He's fun to talk with and gives opportunities to explore different areas of the field. Pay attention to lectures. Tests are more analytic vs. memorization based, which is a little different. He was more than generous with grades though.
Actual exam questions would start with "according to Dr. O'Neill" An easy A if you show up to class and learn Dr. O'Neill's opinions but be prepared to learn more about how he got hired by BYU than about biology. Also don't believe him when he says you don't need to know something for the test.
Dr. O'Neill is an amazing teacher who really cares about his students. I took an entry level biology class from him, so the concepts were really basic. But more than just teaching you he teaches you how to be successful in science and his door is always open to students. As for the class it was pretty easy if you paid attention in class.
I took this course as an online offering, this only exacerbates the flaws of the instructor. The disparity between content lectured and that examined is egregious. Often derailed by clarification Q's and falls on "god's plan" when he cant or wont explain further. Wastes time on poor jokes, pokes fun at students, assigns facile films with cast quiz
Super awesome. And A was an 85% which made it an easy A. I love him
A is 85%, saved me. O'Neill is hilarious, he's Irish, you can tell he cares about the students. But I felt like he didn't really teach us stuff. He says this isn't on the test 40% of the time. Writing assignments are super easy. But if you're going to take this class. Take it from him.
Dr. O'Neill is probably the nicest and most caring professor I've had. He took time to express love for his students almost every time. The class itself is extremely easy; there are three tests, three papers, and a couple online assignments. Sometimes his teaching isn't super clear. He also talks a lot about stuff we don't need to know for the test
Dr. O'Neill is so awesome! He really cares about his students and makes sure we have fun in class. My favorite thing about Dr. O is that he takes every lesson and uses it to explain that God really does exist. I struggled with this class only because I do not like the subject of Biology, but as a person Dr. O'Neill is the best! Also an 85% is an A.
Key things: -85% is an A -2 midterms and one final (each with written portion), 3 written papers, and like 10 online quiz things (not hard, A if completed) -Tests based off lecture -Don't waste your money on a book!!!! Do the trial thing to pound out the online quizzes. Great teacher and super knowledgeable. Gives extra credit also!
One thing that I'd like to clarify is that if you're thinking about MMBIO 121 for you general is that everyone here says it's easy but that's because they're MMBIO majors. I read the positive reviews, signed up, and then the class kicked my butt because I have 0 interest in Biology. It's a great class just keep that in mind.
Dr. O'Neill is an amazing man and honestly I want to be his best friend. But, he is not the best professor. He goes over things in class that aren't on the test and skips over things that are. I am usually a great test taker but his tests really took me by surprise and gave me a hard time. I probably would not recommend.
Kim is literally the best. He's hilarious and makes class so fun. His powerpoints are a little messy, and it's unclear what's going to be on the test because he tells us a lot of unnecessary information. However, if you pay attention, read the textbook, and to go the TA reviews you'll be fine. Take this for the bio credit!!
Dr. O'Neill is my favorite professor! He is entertaining, fair, & very wise. Be sure to go to the TA reviews, they were really helpful when preparing for tests. His class wasn't too difficult, as long as you do your part. There are easy weekly online assignments, 3 short papers, & 3 exams. If you are taking a science class, take it from him!!
Dr. O'Neill is the best! He is SO passionate about what he teaches which makes it easy to care about what you're learning. He starts off every class asking for good news and learns the names of the students sitting in the front. His accent makes everything more enjoyable. Look for his catchphrases "the little guy" and "hold on there, bald eagle."
I loved this class! Dr. O'Neill is so funny and caring. He's a really spiritual person and is really passionate about the subject so I always enjoyed his lectures. The homework can be a little bit heavy and his lectures can be confusing because they don't go along with what you read for the homework. But, I would take this class again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GE. YOU WILL HATE YOUR LIFE. all the reviews are mmbio majors who think its a breeze. If biology is not your thing this class will be difficult. Dr. O'neil is a great person and truly cares for his students. The lectures have nothing to do with the tests.
O'Neill's really cares about his students. Like, a lot. To the point of giving free meal cards to students who didn't have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving. Don't bother buying the textbook. I found the class a breeze but I also got a 5 on the AP bio exam. It could definitely be challenging for those without a bio background. 85 is an A.
ONeill is super funny and I really enjoyed his class! He really cares about his students and wants everyone to pass. An 85% is an A, which was super nice. I dont think the textbook is really necessary though, I feel like I wasted $135 on it. Just do the one week trial to get all of the online assignments done in one go. Interesting lectures too!
I took this class as On-Demand Remote, and at the beginning of the semester it was rough because all of the lectures were just lectures from two or three years ago that had been recorded, so half of the time was just Dr. O answering student questions. His later videos were very helpful though, but the scheduling of each module wasn't super great.
I love Professor O'Neill. I took AP Biology, which made it easier, but it's not necessary to pass. Explains difficult concepts well. Tests are a little trickier than expected, but he counts an 85 as an A. Hilarious guy, great Irish accent. I took his class online, but I wish I had had him in person
Dr. O'Neill is a solid choice for MMBIO 121. This class wasn't very hard if you watch the lecture and take notes. A is 85% so it wasn't too difficult to do well. The TAs are amazing and the tests are not difficult if you attend the TA review before. There are a couple of assignments a week but they are not time-consuming.
Dr. O'Neil is so funny. I did the class remotely because of covid restrictions. That means that I really was only able to watch videos of his lecture but they were amazing and informative. There is also TA office hours from about 9am-5pm everyday if you have a question. I didn't read the textbook, and got an A. Plus an 85% is an A!
Dr. O'Neill was a great teacher who made the lectures interesting and easy to follow. He did a great job answering questions in class and had easy to access and consistent office hours for help outside of class. The readings were helpful for extra information but the lectures always covered everything you would need to know.
I'm a microbio major, and this class felt like a rip-off to me. O'Neill is nice enough, but he expresses opinion in lecture far more than actually teaching material. This class was creationism, pro-life apologetics more than anything. His "teaching" is just powerpoint lectures. Exams are too hard, never felt prepared. Take from someone else.
O'Neill is a great guy and very interesting to learn from. His work is easy and had only a few assignments. He does three big essays the entire semester. His tests are extremely hard because he teaches you only from power points. I never felt prepared for his tests. Make sure to talk to TAs for help.
would unnecessarily spend valuable class time talking about how abortion is evil instead of teaching, but wouldnt talk too much about covid vaccines because he didnt want to get too political. powerpoints are poorly formatted and difficult to read, and went through them way too quickly without explanation. tests were nothing like what we covered.
This class was pro-life. You will spend most of the time talking about how evil abortion is and why God hates abortion. He is funny and caring, but most of what he teaches is basic level biology. The TAs are friendly and always available.
He really cared about us, but he was a really bad teacher. His lectures were very disorganized (he would sometimes even confuse himself), so it was hard to take notes. He also would not teach us about human evolution, opting to give us bad reasons why evolution is faulty instead. No room for differing philosophies, even if based on religion.
Worst professor I have ever had! Crazily disorganized with lectures full of his own cognitive dissonance. He is a creationist biology professor who does not believe in evolution. It absolutely blew my mind. He literally told us that evolution might be real, but we need to not fully believe in it because the devil will use it to steal our testimony.
Dr. O'Neill is hilarious and has entertaining lectures. He makes sure to answer questions. I think his tests are a little tricky, but an 85 is an A in his class, so it's very easy to be successful regardless.
ONeill is a caring professor, but I had a few issues with this class. First of all, we spent too much time talking about debunking evolution, and that we should be pro-life to defend the church. Second, the tests were nothing like the powerpoints. TAs were very helpful but the tests still werent very similar to what was taught.
Professor O'Neill is an awesome Irish guy. He loves his students and he knows his subject so well that if you show up to lecture you don't even need to read the textbook. I had some very spiritual experiences in his class. He is an amazing teacher and an amazing man, take him.
Legitimately one of the sweetest and most interesting people I have ever met. He started every class by pumping us up and getting us laughing. He was just so cool to listen to and his insights were so unique. He is super knowledgable as well but is able to explain stuff in simpler means. I will take any class I can from this man. He is just great.
I love this man with my whole heart. He is incredibly passionate about what he does and lectures are so engaging. He perfectly balances science and religion and how they work together. Tests can be a bit difficult, but if you study everyday and don't try to cram you'll do fine. And an 85% is an A:)
Very disorganized course: lectures don't cover textbook material and textbook material isn't on exams. Teaching style is circular and involves gratuitous metaphors. When expressing personal opinions, he does so more than is appropriate for a formal education setting. Dr. O'Neill never has bad intentions, but sometimes he doesn't read the room.
Dr. O'Neill cares about his students' well being and success. He is an engaging lecturer! Lots to read and there are a few papers that you write throughout the semester. The papers take some time but are pretty fun since Dr. O'Neill is very flexible with the topics.
Professor O'Neil is a great guy. He makes you laugh, cares about his students, and wants you to do well. That being said, his tests are hard, so study and use the TAs. His lectures usually go deeper than what is necessary for a general's class. 85% is an A in this class which is super helpful!
Professor O'Neill is the sweetest guy ever. He is so funny and loves what he teaches. His lectures are saturated with information, so for sure don't miss class. Take good notes! Professor O'Neill really wants you to succeed and always is willing to answers any questions. The tests are pretty tough, so study lots. An "A" is 85% so that was awesome!
You can tell that Prof. O'Neill genuinely cares about the class and biology. His lectures are awesome and you can tell he really knows his stuff. The workload is fairly light and while tests can be a little tricky, they aren't impossible. I honestly wish that Prof. O'Neill could teach all my biology classes!
This professor does not know how to teach and frequently uses class time to discuss whatever he would like. I spent 5-10 hours a week with a TA. She taught me all the material; I didn't learn a thing from him. I also have disability accommodations and when I discussed them with him, he was very dismissive. Please avoid this professor.
Confusing lectures that often seemed disorganized.
He's a great guy and a good professor, but the reviews for the tests didn't help as much as I would've liked. As someone with little experience in microbiology, this class was pretty difficult. Find good resources and pay attention to the lectures. Go to reviews outside of class if they are offered.
This professor is HARD. He is a great guy but the class is just so confusing and the lectures are all over the place. If you have the option to take from a different professor or a different bio class it's not worth all the pain of trying to get a good grade.
Thank goodness an A is an 85%. O'Neill himself is engaging and obviously passionate about teaching and microbiology. However, most of the graded assignments and test reviews are handled by the TA's. The test reviews aren't helpful in preparing for the difficult exams and the textbook uses overly advanced jargon for a 100-level class.
Avoid this professor. Most of the bad reviews are because of his unique view on the theory of evolution but it's his teaching style that did it for me. His lectures are some of the most confusing I have ever seen and I've been at BYU for a while. I ended up having to Youtube everything because he puts things one exams we have never seen before.
Professor O'Neill was fine. His lectures were extremely disorganized and had attendance not been mandatory, I wouldn't have gone. He is very uninvolved with his students, but the class was easy enough. An A is 85%
I really enjoyed 121 with Dr. O'Neill. That being said, there is a textbook that is used to take weekly adaptive online quizzes that go wayy more in depth than is ever needed for the tests. Overall, if you attend the lectures I felt it was a pretty easy course.
Don't take this class if you value your education. Canvas said we could opt out of buying the expensive textbook, so I did but they got mad at me. The modules were locked but out of order. He went off topic during lectures a lot, and some of the stuff he said was very concerning. This guy should not be teaching. The TA was the only reason I passed.
