Kim Shauman is nice, but she needs to learn to teach better. I'm in her Int Stats; she basically reads her powerpoint lecture. Rarely asks if questions. Her midterm is amazingly hard and WAY TOO LONG (12 peeps were still working on exam after 2 hours; we had to stop. (The ave grade was 65 out of 100
The worst experience of my life. Her teaching is okay, but her exam is unfairly difficult. I think there is a major problem when the average midterm grade is a D. (From what I hear, this happens EVERY year with her). And she's increadibly unhelpful and RUDE to students. STAY AWAY
This class is horrible!!! She seems nice enough, except when you don't understand. I went to some of her office hours, and she made me feel like an idiot for even going. So, if you can teach yourself absolutely everything, you should be ok. Unless of course, her tests continue to be impossible!!!!!!
This is easily the hardest SOC class I've taken so far. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand, but the material is pretty hard to grasp. Don't expect to just breathe through this class. You have plenty of homework and reading. As a professor, she is very approachable and helpful in OH.
Lectures are read off of Powerpoint that she usually posts on myucd. It's just that there are more questions and workloads on the exams than the homeworks and the homeworks take more than 2 hrs. to finish. What makes her think we can finish the exam in 2 hrs? Make the TA your new best friend.
I'm an English major currently in this class and she is giving us more writing to do in this class then all of my Enl. classes combined, 6 papers she expects us to do! She is very dry and just lectures for the hour and 20 min. w/o stopping for opinions. She's boring and rude, don't take her!
This is the WORST professor I have ever had! Because of her I do not want to be a SOC major anymore. Her expectations/standards are just SO ridiculously unrealistic! Avoid stress and drama and take SOC classes with ANYONE but Shauman!
cake! i dunno bout the people who've said she was hard.. but if u listen in lecture and take a lot of notes, u'll do fine. i took on average about 7 pages of notes a class, but i've gotten all A's and one B on her papers. she's very thorough in her lecture and really approachable in OH.
Nice, opinionated and interesting teacher with high standards. If you pay attention, take notes, and *really* study for midterms, you'll do fine. Hard class, but she tells you exactly what she's looking for. I recommend her, but only if you're a hardworker and actually want to learn something.
I changed my major because of her. Horrible.
Good lecturer, but expectations are ridiculous. I have a 3.9 and was getting a c-, so was over half of the class, so I dropped. Only take this class if you have a light load or are a masochist. And she is very unhelpful.
This was the WORST CLASS I've ever had. The homework ok, but OMG the exams were from HELL!!! Average grade is like D+ or something. She is an unfair grader, and beware if you see her in OH--she's so rude and will make you feel like an idiot. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HATE YOURSELF!!!!!!
If you take this class be prepared to write more papers then you ever have in one class! She is the only teacher at Davis who will not hesitate to give you an F on a paper even though you thought you wrote a good paper, she ended up giving me 2 F's in this class and I'm a B student. DO NOT TAKE HER!
AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
DON'T DO IT YOU'LL REGRET IT!!!
Her tests are very hard, but if you go to lecture and take notes, then you'll be fine. Her lectures are very clear, but if you don't understand something, she will explain it in a different way. The papers are not so bad compared to other classes. I had to work for it, but I got an A in her class.
kim was an unfair grader. Although she was very clear in her lectures and the material was interesting, her overall teaching style is flawed. She is not very open to helping the students. I was struggling when I thought I was doing well. One thing I appreciate is that she answered all of my emails promptly. She does not offer extra credit at all.
She is a good lecturer and her slides are very clear. Her tests are pretty damn hard, though.
Her lecture style is clear but really repititious. She tends to lecture really fast so be ready to take lots of notes. Her exams are pretty demanding and there's quite a bit of reading involved. She asks you to basically memorize everything she says in lecture. She's good about explaining things in office hours though. Not easy, but doable.
Don't expect an A unless you can devote time to go above and beyond normal expectations.
I love this professor. I actually took her for two quarters in a row and I don't regret it at all. She is hard but the information that you will gain from her classes is worth it. If you do all of the reading, attend class and actually pay attention you can get an A. Exams are tough so ask questions if you don't get something
She 'shamed' our class for about 20 minutes one morning. She was complaining that we don't read the text, and how frustrated she was by that. She was saying if we're that lazy, then we shouldn't even show up to class. Really rude! On all other class days she was really monotone, no real spark in class. Did nothing to promote conversations in class.
subject is pretty much disgusting.even if you have the best teacher in the world you would probably hate the class. shauman is nice, but def expects you to understand the stuff BEFORE you sit through lecture. Expects a lot from soc students- were not mathmaticians- were sociologists WE HATE MATH! aaah tests WAY hard.why is this a req!
She is the worse teacher I have ever had at Davis. She is completely unhelpful if you ask her for any help and she is RUDE and makes you feel like an idiot. Her class is a joke and she just reads from notes and repeats herself in lecture. Her essay tests are hard and she has the most arbitrary grading system ever. DONT TAKE HER!!!!!
NOT RECOMMENDED. MANAGES TO COMPLICATE READINGS MORE THAN EXPLAIN THEM. READS DIRECTLY FROM NOTES WITH VERY LITTLE STUDENT INTERACTION.. RESULT? VERY LITTLE STUDENT INTEREST. CLASS DOES NOT AT ALL PREPARE YOU FOR HER TESTING.
This professor seems to really know her stuff. She also seems very interested in what she's teaching. The tests are pretty hard but she curves, so it turns out okay. Attendance is not mandatory but try not to miss, I took about 6 pages of notes a day, and you are expected to know most of it.
Shauman is a good teacher. She expects students to actually learn what she teaches. Her tests are long and require a bit of studying. I enjoyed the class because it was challenging. She is very clear about what she expects from the beginning so write down everything, and learn everything too. Readings are very important and def should be done!
After graduation many sociology majors think "what the hell did I learn?" The content in this class is practicle and by the end of it you walk away thinking you LEARNED SOMETHING of importance. Grades very hard but if you attend lectures, make notes on readings and study you can get an A. No handouts- this is what higher education is suppossed to b
Shauman has a genuine interest in the subject matter and her enthusiasm is apparent in her lectures. There is a lot of assigned reading, but I found the lectures to be enough for me to make it through the class. Attending class is a good idea as I found myself taking a lot of notes each day. Her class was tough but I found it very rewarding.
I found her lectures to be taken straight from the reading without any personal interjections or analysis. She is completely dry and condescending to students. I received a C on both her midterm and final, despite studying for over a week on each. My grade for my final paper was only an average of my test scores. She should stick to doing research.
Not that great of a prof. Like the previous comment, I studied extensively for the class, and only ended up with a C+. She isn't very helpful either, and her tests are quite difficult even after you study. Too much material covered, with no real useful guide. Not recommended at all.
She is passionate about the subject but unfortunately her lectures are dry and do not help with tests or the paper. If you take her class study the readings and you should do decent but don't expect to get a B or A no matter how much you study.
She loves the subject but it is hard to stay focused and awake in her class. Everyone was very happy when this course was over.
She is a hard grader. Her lectures are very dry (she reads off a prepared speech everyday), and she is condescending to her students. If EVERYONE is doing poorly, it's a sign that she's doing something wrong, not us. Don't miss a class, because the next week you'll be lost and she is rude when you ask questions.
I'm not one to leave negative comments but she is by far the worst professor I've ever had. She is extremely condescending, rude and unapproachable. I was so excited to take this class because it is an interesting field of sociology and she seemed like a knowledgable professor. I definitely regret taking this course with her.
I totally agree people's comment below.Dry class, lecture read from articles, hard grader. The essays grade by TA but TA isn't helpful at all. Can't ask question to TA or students when the exam starts. 5 take home essay exams.READ articles,TAKE GOOD notes, answer exam question directly, you'll at least get C.I got 2C-,1D+,1C so far.WORK HARD
I don't get how so many ppl are doing so bad in her class. I've attended every single lecture and took VERY GOOD notes and it helped me A LOT with papers. I didn't even read most of the assigned readings b.c her lectures are based on the readings. So far, I'm getting an A- in the class. STOP COMPLAINING AND START COMING TO LECTURE!!!!
I've been to every lecture, average 5 pages of notes and record the lecture to go back and revise my extensive notes and I'm still not doing to hot in her course. Her teaching style is not for everyone, she's too rude and condescending in my opinion. If you can, avoid her as a prof unless you're up for a serious challenge
Freaking hard professor. People are not joking. Only take her if you're a masochist. Averaged 6 pgs of notes, went to every lecture, ended up with C (this from an A/B student), won't answer a question directly, but will direct you back to reading or lecture material. You learn a lot, but be prepared to devote all your time to her class.
The worst teacher I have ever had at UCD, hands down. Like some people on here, I thought I was a good writer; next thing I know, she gave me a F on a paper! Shes dry, inaccessible, rude, and a ridiculous grader. I attended lecture regularly, and am hoping I get a C-. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will regret it, and she will make you suicidal :(
Just took the midterm and she is ridiculous in her grading due to the fact that her expectations are high in what she wants from her answers. She wants exactly whats in her head not what she says inher lecture. She is belittling and condescending, she stated that you are at a university now so you all need to be up to par.... DO NOT TAKE HER
This was one of the classes that i took after reading rate my professors. Shauman appears sweet and nice in lectures, however, she grades ridiculously hard for no reason. i got an F on the 1st exam basically bcuz i didn't say word for word on the computer based format. Don't take SOC 122 with Shauman, unless u absolutely have 2
Horrible horrible professor. Grades hard, does not prepare you for exams, does not assist you with questions pertaining to the course, lectures are dry and boring. A majority of the class is failing or expected to fail. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
One of the best classes I have taken at Davis. Dr. Shauman truly cares about the students getting the material and I thank her for that. The class is not hard, but not easy. You got to do the work to get a good grade. Since, it is such a quantitative class, I wish we had a few more in-class working of examples (they are presented instead).
worst professor ever. she does not care about her student, very unclear on her exam. I attended all the lectures, i took good notes and read the material and ended with a F. SHE NEEDS TO STOP TEACHING..........
Worst teacher I've ever had. Arrogant, boring, contemptuous. Terrific subject ruined by this class. Got a 9/26 on essay and went to talk to her in OH & she was so cold an rude I cried after. Studied harder than I ever have for a soc class and got a B-. Few kids in the front she liked, so unless you're them, don't take this class.
She may ramble and talk really fast during lecture, but her lecture slides make up for it and are extremely useful. Buying the book is not necessary. Homework problems are straight forward (from lecture slides). Exams are based on examples from lecture slides but with curve-balls. Based on a curved which is a must! Great professors overall!
Terrible professor. Very disorganized and not helpful. Very strict grader and most of the class failed. While I know I need to put in my part, she did not put enough into her part. While no textbook required, there were a lot of readings online that were quite lengthy. She picks specific details that are easy to miss on the exams. Deceptive
Avoid her at any Cost. one of the worst of Sociology in UCD. strict grading. just avoid her…i worked very hard and got a C-. she expects a lot.
True, Proff. Shauman is a tough grader; however, she puts so much work in each of her lectures that it's only fair for her expect the same from us. I got an F on the midterm even though I was doing all the readings and homework. I started recording her lectures and talking to the excellent TA (Cassie Hartzog) and was able to get an A- in the class
I'm sorry, but no. I see why she has such a low rating. Stats is hard enough without dealing with a professor like this. She says she wants to test you on her knowledge of concepts, but the final tests you on stuff you never learned in class or covered in notes. There is literally no way to study for it. If you don't have to take this, don't.
Worst professor ever. I dont know why she even teaches. She should just go do research. She talks down to students when they ask questions, rambles meaninglessly through lectures, and tries to trick you on tests. I read the reviews and took the class anyway. I thought they were written by lazy people. Theyre not. Shes really just a bad teacher.
She will make you hate statistics. The average grade on the final was 59%. She uses a curve, but the questions are based on random tidbits she briefly mentioned in class. If you heard and remembered them, you scored much higher, so it messes up the curve. It really does not matter how well you understand the material.
Avoid this professor if possible. She is disrespectful to students and has snapped at some during lecture. She penalizes people for not answering questions with the exact wording that she would use even if it's still correct. She tries to cover more material than she can and has nearly impossible tests.
I have never complained about a professor until I took this class. She is disrespectful to students, rude, and cold hearted. The overall mean for the midterm was in the low 50's with the highest grade a B-. She takes pride in saying she's a tough grader and if you seek help during her OH she provides none. Avoid her at all cost!
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS!!! Absolutely the WORST teacher I have EVER had for a Sociology course! Mean for our class exam was a 51. The mean for her class prior to us was a 61!!! Wtf!!! Stay far far away unless u purposely want to lower your GPA.
I worked very hard for this class and got a D+. She is the worst professor not just because she is disrespectful, doesn't care about her students, or because she speaks fast. She is the worst because she does stupid things such as using an average that doesn't correspond to the class, and she doesn't put in her part to help students improve.
I really enjoyed this class. I was a little concerned after the first exam, but I got great feedback and improved. The TA, Michelle, was also great. You do have to attend, take good notes and keep up on the reading. I really felt like she cares about the students and is passionate about the subject matter.
This class really challenged my view on stratification. She is not an "easy" grader but I really learned from this class and felt she was fair. I received good feedback and was able to improve my grade as class went on. She is one of the best professors I've had.
I really liked this professor. In general, I like professors that present material succinctly. She is well organized and gives the information needed to do well in class. Lab portion of the class requires using STATA, but is fairly simple. This class is a great look into quantitative social research and not too difficult if you put in work.
I had to take this class for my major, she's condescending and presents material in a way that makes you feel like you're beneath her. Her exams are so hard she had to have a huge curve because the average was 60%. I did my part, and it was evident she just wanted to prove that "sociology is hard." More than half the class took it pass/no pass.
Hardest Soc class Ive taken. Tests are very hard and readings assigned are super long (almost 3 chs. before each class). Would not recommend taking her unless you are ready to dedicate long hrs just for this class and studying. Srsly thoe, DO NOT take her unless youre passionate about markets and the economy.
I'm really optimistic about my professors, but I've never had one upset me so much until now. The tests are brutal. If you don't have a specific word in your answer, you'll get docked points. The specificity you need to know for tests is absurd, especially without being given study guides. So much more that could be said, but avoid her if you can.
Hardest professor ever! You learn a lot of information in a short time and she expects you to know everything about every article she assigns. No study guides for exams which are 45% of your grade and daily reading quizzes that take over an hour each online. Class average for the first midterm was a 59. Avoid if you can
The worst professor Ive ever had. Literally avoid here at all cost. She is inconsiderate and very arrogant. She expects you to remember every word she says for the test and there is no room for indvidual interpretation. There are 2 exams which are hard and a final paper with no clear prompt and she gives you topic and articles.
This is one tough teacher, I admit. You read a lot. However, she truly teaches material that is modern and very relevant to the field of sociology. If youre looking to go to grad school, this is a great primer for the work youll be doing. If youre looking for an easy A, look elsewhere. Visit office hours for clarifications and helpful tips.
one of the most difficult teachers at Davis. She has LOTS of reading... the class average for the quizzes? 4/10.... Also, the exams (except the final) were not curved... the class average for that was a 57%
Kim Shauman is the sweetest woman and a nerd! <3 Ask too many dumb questions and she won't be afraid to tell you to open your ears or your book, whichever are closest. Review notes and ask pertinent questions! She can be a fair grader and at times lenient. So long as you constantly improve and prove your understanding of material, you should pass!
Do not take this class unless you're a sociology graduate student. Class material is straightforward, exams are hard. However, she is an abhorrent human being. She hates students. Under NO circumstance should you go her office hours. She berated the entire class TWICE, for 10-15 mins each time, the week before finals. Worst prof I have ever had.
The goal of this class is not for students to simply memorize statistical methods, but to have a conceptual and functional understanding of the logic of each statistical method (simple comp of means to multivariate linear regression). You can call it nit-picking but Prof Shauman helps you deeply understand the application of statistical methods.
Expects a lot from students yet her instructions arent very clear. No midterms or final but heavily graded on content maps which are difficult. Shes very monotone and boring, even though the material can be interesting. Would not recommend taking her.
What someone else said before me was very accurate. She really does expect a lot. An ungodly amount of reading at times along with hours of videos. For one specific week, I counted how many pages and hours of lecture we had- 120 pages of reading, and over 6 hours of videos including lecture. I have enjoyed every class but this one.
This class couldve been enjoyable but some professors should only do research and not teach, that is her. Gives assignments without telling us how to do them, expects a lot and assigns readings that can take up to a whole day to read and understand. Could be more considerate during a pandemic but chooses not to.
Instructions for content maps are not very specific so it is very difficult to receive full credit. With that being said, you have to work extra hard for your grade because it is 60% of your grade. There is no extra credit, her instructions are ambiguous. The material is interesting and she presents it easily to understand.
Not understanding at all. Does not listen to her students and expects too much.
She's a nice person and I didn't find her intimidating at all. Assignments did pile up toward the second half of the quarter and many of us felt overwhelmed. Overall, it's not the hardest class but readings can be very extensive. I often found myself skimming as we would have to read multiple chapters of books weekly. Grading can also be harsh.
Super unreceptive to feedback. Extremely unclear assignment guidelines and feedback. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE IN GROUPS. Condescending in 1 on 1 convos, very NOT understanding of medical issues/emergencies or disabilities. Lectures are mandatory but not substantive. one of the few tenured sociology profs that give the department a bad name :(
Very kind prof who knows good amount about content she teaches, always went around asking if we had any questions. Assignments were only reading notes (graded on completion) & 5 causal maps, which were a slide of info that u already had cause of notes. Like any class, as long as u put in EFFORT as a student & not rely ONLY on prof, u will be fine!
So many readings and you need to submit your notes for them. Sometimes teacher assigns reading late in the day and it's due the next day and she won't give you credit if you turn it in late. There's no tests which is nice but it's all group projects and the requirements are very unclear. Harsh grading on the projects and redundant material.
Overall, I thought the class was pretty interesting however, in-class assignments and exams make up the majority of your grade which is seemingly not bad until its time to take the exams. She gives very broad information for students wondering what to study for exams. The avg grade for the midterm was a 25 out of 50! We all failed with no curve!
To start off, this professor is very nice and the course it self is very interesting. The grading of this class is made up of small and short in-class assignments the majority of the grade comes from the midterm and final exam. More than half of the class failed the midterm and half the class were not able to get a B on the final.
I honestly don't know how I passed this class with an A+ (before midterm grades I considered making this class P/NP ... and this was a major req), but there is a curve at the very end. Assignments are manageable and my method for the midterm/final (class average was 50-60% for both) was to write A LOT and hope for the right answer (90%+ on both).
do not take.
She's a nice person.. but horrible teacher. VERY passionate about the class and expects you to be too. Lectures are very content heavy between readings and her personal input. On top of that there are no study guides given for exams and no curves. Avg. for midterm was 18.33/50 and final 27/50 with total points possible for the class being 152.
