Gives LOTS of notes, but lectures are interesting. Makes class somewhat animated. Nothing too hard. Just too many notes. Easy grader--if you give the basic jist of the answer to an essay question that she's looking for, she will give you full credit.
She does give a lot of notes, but they are very relevant. The notes are what is on the test. Very knowledgeable on the material, is very pleasant and nice. Easy A in this class, but I learned a lot from the class. I recommend taking her.
She is an awesome professor!!! I definitely recommend taking Antho. She gives a lot of notes, but she writes them all on the board and tells you exactly what to expect on the tests. The tests are all blue book, but if you study you'll get an easy A!
She is very knowledgable on what she teaches. I enjoyed the class. It was very interesting and easy. I would recommend taking her.
I have her for Medical Anthro. and Female and Male Perspective. In both classes there are only 2 essays and the final (take home). Medical essays are a little hard, but she's really helpful and lets you rewrite it if you want a better grade.
SHE IS AWESOME!!!! She is by far the best prof. i have had here at KU. She cares about the students in the class, she does give a lot of notes but they are all helpful. Dr. Shively never makes anyone in class feel stupid!
great professor incredibly intelligent and helpful with hard material.
Really just an all-around fantastic professor.
great professor...lots of a notes but worth it.
Great class, interesting readings, good discussions. She's a great professor who teaches well, treats her students with respect, and explains everything thoroughly. I would definitely recommend this prof !
She is very nice and knows her subject. She's very opinionated.
Really good professor, knows her stuff and grades very fair. One of the better profs i've had, and the best i had this semester
an interesting class for once! taught by a hottie!
good teacher.tests are multiple choice which is easy but 2 essays on each test which suck. dont have to really read the book so dont waste your money on it.
extremely helpful, clear, and organized. saw some cool movies, did some simple, interesting in-class writing. tests are quick, but there are lots of concepts. taking good notes is easy and she gives an easy study guide before each test and the final, which is the same as a test. take her!
One of my favorite anthropology teachers!! She's incredidbly easy and helpful. Had for for ant. of religion, male and female, and medical anthro. grades were based on essays and she grades very lenient. and she lets you rewrite. take her for an easy A!
She is great!!! I had her for cultural anthro when I wasn't an anthropology major and now I am an anthro major- that should tell u something. She is awsome!!!
Prof Shively is awesome!! I never had a better time learning material in any class. She is personal with the students and she will do anything to help you in making your grade better. She is nice to look at too!
Had her for a night class. Pretty much just a very long and relatively boring lecture. Tests are alright. Quizes on assigned reading, and yes the reading does suck.
I love the way she teaches. There's no way to sleep through her class; there's always something new to be learned.
Prof. Shively is awesome! I got her for Cultural Anthropology my 1st semester of my freshman year, and I was a little worried, because I didn't care for World Cultures in HS, but she definately makes the class interesting! She grades easily, and there are plenty of chances to get an A. Notes are almsot everyday, but her class is still great!
prof shively is a great teacher. however watch out for the essay questions on the exams, write more then the two or three sentences she tells you to write but don't BS too much. other then that a pretty good class to take....
She is great and awesome to listen to. Her outlooks are amazing. I didn't want to take the class but very glad I ended up doing it. Highly recomend her!
class notes everyday for the whole class...pretty easy tests...some questions are tricky...good teacher
I really thought this was going to be a terribly boring class, but she really made it interesting and easy to learn. There's no text book to buy, so that's a plus. Her tests are not hard as long as you come to class and take notes. She's very very nice and a wonderful professor. I'd definatly recommend her!
i like her and her class a lot. i think she's clear and thorough. most of her material is really interesting, and she doesn't give much reading, but the reading she does give is so interesting. it's the only text i have EVER liked to read. her tests are somewhat challenging, but they are not very hard.
She is SO nice. Yeah, there are notes everyday, but the class is so interesting that you're not bothered by it. I really enjoyed her class.
awesome teacher. gives great notes and study guides which lay out everthing on the tests. the text is not that bad to read and she explains it well. great class to take for a good grade and to learn some pretty interesting stuff
extremely easy class to take for a good grade.
Very intelligent and helpful. Explains subject material and takes time to answer questions.
This prof is pretty easy. You have to do blackboard discussions and readings but it's not hard. She gives you the study guides for the tests and fill them out, it doesn't take long. It's also everything that is on the test. Attendence is optional but I suggest going to keep up with the discussions and videos she shows
Easy class. I went to class about 40% of the time and got a B. Just make sure you do the readings (Its not a lot).
Dr. Shively is by far one of the best professors at KU. She has a comprehensive knowledge of the material and she is very personable. Take this class it you want to learn and have fun.
Very nice lady. Did not take attendance. I skipped a lot and still got good grades. Material was a little boring for me, but it's just not my thing. She didn't just talk; she had visual aids and showed videos. Good class to just sit, relax, and discuss.
Two books required. Small reading projects with written responses required via blackboard which are short and simple. No attendence is taken and lecture notes are available via blackboard. Three exams 90% lecture notes 10% readings. Review sheets also provided prior to exams.
She's so awesome! She makes anthropology fun.
I've had her for about 5 classes now and I plan on taking her for more if possible. One of the best professors on campus, in my opinion, and extremely knowledgeable in any of the material she teaches.
Professor Shively is an awesome professor. She's very knowledgeable in her field and is very passionate about it. She has a great view of the world and doesn't push politics on you. Tests are fairly easy if you pay attention in class and read the assignments.
A wonderful prof - she is very helpful and understanding, and incredibly intelligent in her subject. Some material in the class is boring, she makes it interesting with her comments and discussions. She shows videos, has a lot of pictures. The tests are easy if you look at her notes. Get blackboard discussions done early. This class is an easy A.
The book is used for almost all blackboard discussions, but you DO NOT have to waste the money buying it. Most of the essays are online. Just google them.
Enough is said here about Prof. Shively. She knows her stuff, gives you the important info on blackboard. Use your brain and you'll get an A.
Very good teacher. Dr. Shively gives interesting and informative lectures and you will not find a nicer teacher.
I took anthropology last semester with donner and completely failed it and when i took it with shively i had a high B so shes def a great teacher you do need your textbook to do blackboard assignments but there arent many and her exams are right from the notes that she gives you. She knows her stuff and will answer any questions you have
Easy class. Nice Prof. Text is only a "reader" and only used from time to time and an easy book at the end of the semester.
She understands and recognizes that not everyone is an Anthropology major. All notes are posted on Black Board & tests are straight from the notes and essay readings in the textbook. She also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities & easy movie worksheets. Interesting & easy course. I would definitely recommend taking Shively.
Great professor. Makes it an easy course and gives plenty of opportunities for points. Definitely take her
i had Shively for cultural anthropology and i have no regrets. she doesnt make it extremely hard for you to pass, all you have to do id do the readings and the online questions once a week. she's easy to talk to and she wants you to pass. she gave extra credit worth 100pts (thats a test grade) i highly recommend
Dr. Shively is very nice. She is also funny. The book is mandatory but you read passages that areveryinteresting the tests are a little difficult but study and you will be fine. I think she is one of the best professors on campus.
She is very nice. At time the class can get boring, but it does have its good moments. You need the textbook, but only because you have to read short articles from them. Otherwise, she post all her notes on D2L and her test are straight foward. TAKE HER (:
She is very nice. At time the class can get boring, but it does have its good moments. You need the textbook, but only because you have to read short articles from them. Otherwise, she post all her notes on D2L and her test are straight foward. TAKE HER (:
Prof Shively is very intelligent and funny in a smart sort of way. She is always helpful and available if you have a special situation. She stays on track with the syllabus which is very helpful if you have a busy schedule. I will try to take more classes from her. She has the type of experience important for an anthro prof to have.
Dr. Shively is a perfect professor to have for any Anthropology major. She has experience, and she is laid back and helpful, not to mention funny. Her tests are very straight forward, and she is always in her office during her hours to help a student. I highly suggest taking her classes.
She is very boring, but if you take notes and study for the tests then you are golden. She gives a chance for extra credit, and is a very nice professor. I'd recommend!
Her class can be boring but her notes are online. Attendance isn't mandatory but it does help. Her test are not too difficult.
Awesome professor. Very helpful, seems to truly care about her students. Notes are online, attendance isn't mandatory but you should go because sometimes she shows films and had worksheets. It's an easy and very interesting class. Take her
Class was somewhat boring. Test will seem easy if you study. Coming to class isn't mandatory but it's best that you always attend because it'll help you understand the material better and you'll fee more comfortable taking the tests.
very knowledgable in the Muslim culture and experiences, explains everything thoroughly and her sense of humor is great. Her class is easy if you read the material she assigns and you pay attention. Easy A if you put effort in!
Dr. Shively is such a knowledgeable professor. She is experienced in her field so she knows what she's talking about. Lecture will either be very interesting or very boring, depends on the topic. 3 exams make up 75% of the grade and a collection of small assignments make up 25%. Shows videos in class and gives extra credit. I'd take her again.
I love Dr. Shively. I only had her twice and for both challenging classes (upper anthro) but I loved her teaching style. She's laid-back, relatable in her manner, and a very good explainer. I enjoyed that the classes I took were writing based. She also has interactive with little projects or field trips. She's interesting and a great person.
You don't really have to show up for class, she never takes attendance; very boring. She puts all of her notes online so you can print them out, even though she says they aren't the exact notes that she goes over in class, they are! You definitely need to get the book with the journals, they are on tests! Grades her exams + assignments very quickly
Professor shively is a very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and fun professor to take for anthropology classes. She is always helpful, knows a vast amount on the muslim culturereligion and is a laid back professor. Took this class for a filler and one of the best thus far. Take her if you can!
Shively is Love, Shively is LIfe.
Very interesting class. She's funny and a pretty easy grader.
Dr. Shively is absolutely amazing. She is one of the most, if not the most knowledgeable professor I've ever had. She's learned all of this knowledge first hand too; she's been all over the world and actually met with many of the people she teaches about. She is absolutely incredible and I will do my best to take a class with her every semester.
I loved taking her class and regret that I didn't take one of hers sooner. She's one of the better teachers I've had and she's willing to help on her papers and the final and gives the option of rewrites at the end of the semester. She makes the class fun and relates it to topics that might come up in the media as well.
Her lectures are interesting she is very passionate about what she teaches. She only gives 3 exams, study and you are likely to pass. Her study guides are clear, and she doesn't take attendance. She gives a good amount of extra credit and the homework was never boring. She also responded to emails and put grades in quickly. Highly recommend her!
Easy teacher, just make sure you do all the class work and study for test. She even gives you a study guide.
Overall good. There were just four exams, they were always 50 questions and all multiple choice. Study guides were provided. Homework was online D2L discussions. About 12 were available, but you only had to pick any five of those. Lectures could get boring, but all the notes were available online. Many extra credit opportunities posted on D2L.
Her class is always interesting. There are no tests, only papers. She is very intelligent, and has a lot of field experience. Buy the book, and make sure you spend time on the papers. Going to class is important when you go to write the papers, as you can use lecture material.
Her Ant 010 was the easiest course I've taken in college. Good filler class; helps the GPA.
Dr. Shively is legitimately my favorite professor or teacher I have EVER had. I have learned more from her than just about any professor on KU's campus, and I respect and admire her as my mentor and as a friend. If ever you have an opportunity to take a class with her, please, please do. She is truly incredible.
Professor Shively is super sweet and is willing to answer any questions you might have. Even if it's after class or during her office hours, she'll help you with anything. She has notes that you can follow along with in class and all of the notes are on D2L as well. Tests aren't too hard if you follow the notes and she doesn't take attendance.
Prof Shively was awesome I had very little interest in her class but she made everyday interesting. Make sure to keep up with D2L !!
She grades really easy. You have a couple of exams that you will pass because the study guide has the same thing on it. Only have to do 5 discussions and a couple of worksheets on top of that. Pretty manageable!
This was the first time she taught this FYS. That being said it was well organized and she was super flexible with dates. KU campus store says there is a book to buy but its not mandatory. There were a few assignments and lots of short papers. Definitely come prepared to class when she assigns readings!!!
Very lenient with grading/due dates, very kind professor.
Professor Shively is one of the best professors I've had. She's very kind and understanding and if you're ever struggling with something she's always willing to help you understand or come up with a new solution for an assignment. She does have a lot of written assignments, but she makes them fun to do.
Shively was genuinely one of the best professors I've had. Had her for both ANT212 and ANT236 and she was one of the most understanding and kind professors I've met. Couple of papers that were kind of long but she gives really good feedback and usually an opportunity to redo it if she thinks you just misunderstood something.
Currently still taking Dr. Shivley's ANT10CD course, but she is AWESOME! Her classes are mostly lecture's so be ready to take notes, but she keeps it fun and interesting but adding her own experiences traveling as a researcher. We do a lot of reading but all the material is interesting and easy reads.
Professor Shively truly cares about what she teaches. lecture heavy but the powerpoints are posted online and easy to follow. assignments are easy and she gives you the tools for success.
Dr. Shively is clearly very educated in the world of anthropology and it shows. She was very respectful of other cultures and religions while also teaching about them as unbiased as possible. Very kind person, highly recommend her class. While attendance isn't mandatory, I'd still say you should show up to every class. I skipped once and was lost.
I have taken a few classes with Dr. Shively, which are always fun. This class is all lectures, but she finds ways to engage the students. The tests were all online except the midterm. There is a lot of homework, but you are given much of the semester to complete it. There are also extra credit opportunities to take advantage of.
Very considerate and VERY interesting lectures! Not a tough grader as long as you do what's required and will typically allow you to redo an assignment if you misunderstood something. All textbooks are free with inclusive access and the assigned reading isn't bad. Take her class if you get the chance to, one of the best professors I've had at KU.
Dr. Shively is one of the best professors you could ask for. She is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and passionate about what she teaches. Unlike other professors, which tend to inject their own beliefs and opinions about a topic, Dr. Shively teaches all angles of any given issue which is extremely valuable in sociological topics.
Amazing professor that speaks about all religions and people in a non-biased annd very informative way. Shes studied with people of different religions and definetly knows what she is talking about. Very knowledgable and professional. Just a LOT of work for a gen ed...
Clear passion for what we were learning. Kept bias to a minimum. Can definitely get an A. No real exams mostly just open-ended questions.
She was a great professor! Clearly cares about her students and makes class simple and enjoyable. Homework and exams were simple and straightforward. She was always good at reminding when things were due. She gives multiple opportunities for extra credit.
Had Prof. Shively for my freshman year in Cult Anthropology. To me, this class was very stress free and while there were multiple discussion questions for homework, I could easily knock them out within 10 minutes. Notes are always available on D2L but you can easily still pass by just paying attention to lectures. I recommend this class to everyone
I absolutely love Dr. Shively! I am not an anthropology major, but took this class as a GenEd. She gives great lectures and thought-provoking assignments. Offers extra credit at the end of the semester and is always willing to help. Her class is fun and easy to do well in. The class was very interesting and you will learn a lot.
Dr. Shively is a very nice woman and will help you no matter what. I missed a lot of class and she still helped me catch up and improve my grade. The class is very interesting and the grading criteria is clear.
Lovely as always. This class in particular challenged be a lot because I am not well versed in the methods. There were a lot to write but Shively is extremely flexible as always. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!
Women and Religion is such a fascinating course! You learn so much about different world religions, and Dr. Shively does a really good job at teaching and keeping the class engaging. There are not many assignments; just a few discussion posts and a few small papers. She's also very lenient with due dates and will give an extension if needed
Shively is very kind. I was struggling deeply with a variety of issues and did not attend her class often. However, I spoke with her eventually about my low attendance and she was understanding and noted my decent work in the class. The subject matter is interesting and you can tell she enjoys engaging with her students. A very caring woman.
I enjoyed this class a lot and learned so much. I've never done this kind of research before but as a first introduction to it this class is great. Dr. Shively is pleasant. Her grading criteria isn't always the easiest to understand, but you can always come to her and ask for clarification. Good professor, good class. Very understanding.
I had Kim Shively for Cultural Anthropology. She was very informative and explained stuff with concise but clear explanations. Although it might seem like a long and complex class name, as long as you take notes and follow along in the textbooks, this class is a very easy A. Would recommend to satisfy one of your gen eds!
Would take again. Took as an elective and enjoyed. Attendance is not mandatory and easily accessible online. Frequent reading but few assignments. Grading can be difficult to understand but overall read the material and show what you know. Dr. Shively is one of the best. I enjoyed having her.
Loved her cultural anthropology class! So chill and honestly she made it pretty interesting and you can tell she is knowledgeable about what she is doing. It is best to go as much as possible- her slideshows are on her exams. She responds quickly to emails and is understanding! Highly recommend
I LOVE Dr. Shively! She's an amazing lecturer, but be quick if you're writing down your notes! It's not super necessary though because all of the content covered is uploaded to D2L. The content we covered in her class was super interesting and I would take it again if I could just to squeeze all of the knowledge out of it. Online exams too! 10/10
Dr. Shively's Genders Across Cultures class was AMAZING, and I would take it again if I could. There were enough assignments to get a good grade even if you messed up, but there weren't so many that you're swamped. There is quite a bit of reading, but the material is interesting so it's not too bad.
Professor Shively's class is insightful and engaging. While mainly lecture-based, she presents the material in an interesting way. Assignments are reasonable, and extra credit opportunities are available. Unstuckstudy proved helpful for studying alongside the course materials.
Great lectures. Listens to the needs of the students, if you need an extension she will give it to you. Great class discussions.
texts are long & detailed. a lot of work from D2L disc, podcasts/videos, essays. Really lenient & understanding, will give extensions. some stuff is sad, especially talks about hospice. You need detailed understanding for work-generally can't get away with basic explanations. lectures are detailed and helpful for work
Dr. Shively's class was phenomenal, especially for such a heavy topic. She shows so much care and knowledge through all of the material, and it was really easy and entertaining to follow along to. I never found myself bored in her class. I hope she has a lovely retirement!!
