Class is hard but you will actually learn something. She has good web site - reviews are important and if you study them you will do well. She is a really enthusiastic teacher and makes class fun. Highly recommend her. I'm doing good in organic now because of her.

Dr. Kim is a great teacher. She will take the time to make sure you understand the material. Her notes are highly organized, legible, and easy to understand. This class can be an easy A if you are dedicated to such marks. Watch out for the final! Dr. Kim does not write it. The department writes it and it may as well be in Chinese.
Dr. Kim is an outstanding teacher. She is a really enthusiastic and makes chemistry fun. If you show up to class, take good notes, work the examples & problems she assigns in class, then you should have no problem making a decent grade. Plus study her online review notes carefully every night. It will give you an edge over the other students.
teacher focuses on the exceptions is almost joyful when watching students struggle. her analogues are the only useful thing. She wants certain details and do not deviate from them or else. Her solution to misunderstood concepts is study harder. Not very delightful.
She is a very bad chemistry professor. I would never again consider taking it with her. Her tone of voice is incredibly rude and she has pop up quizzes after her lectures....so be ready! She is a very "put down" type of teacher and she will not bend the rules for anyone.
She thinks that everyone in the class is going to be a chemist, she doesn't realize that some of us don't give a**** about chemistry, that it is only a required class to transfer to ASU. She is horrible in helping a student outside of class room, most of the others teacher don't like her and they are the ones who are helping me.
I believe she gets off by watching her students fail or drop her class. Absolutely horrible teacher. Most of other teacher don't like her either. So, my suggestion is not to take her class nor the lab, she will doc points for the little mistakes that has nothing to do with chemistry. But if you are, GOOD LUCK! and study very hard!
she thinks nomenclature of formulas should be part of the students life for the rest of their life
I really found Dr. Kim to be a great teacher & very helpful. Her lectures really prepare you for the exams. She is easy to understand, her homework is not too hard, and her tests are more than fair. I have found that most of the students who do not like her are slackers and can't handle structure & rules. If you are committed, she is great!
I agree with the last comment. Why should she bend the rules? Everyone got a copy of the rules the first week of class. Dr Smith is one of the best professors I've had.
Dr. Kim Smith is one of the few professors that helps you retain the material you learn in class. Her class in not easy by any means but if you attend every lecture, take good notes, and work on example problems, you will succeed. She uses great examples and is quite animated at times which helps for those visual learners. Great teacher.
One of the best teachers I've had. Her class notes are easy to follow, and her lectures make everything crystal clear. I've never enjoyed chem so much.
This teacher has crazy antics that can some times be distracting from the importance of the material. very meticulous and has her quirks. She isn't extremely helpful and can be kind of a hard nose. Doesn't want to be bothered with simple questions on concepts. Overall medium quality avoid if you can. focuses on the exceptions.
Don't let the witchy exterior fool you; she's actually a great teacher. If you can get past her rants about politics and how milk is the decline of modern society, you'll learn a lot. YOU HAVE TO PUT TIME IN TO SUCCEED! She's a hard grader, but she also extends mercies when you least expect them. Any teacher who calls an 89.3 an A deserves credit!
I thought Dr. Kim was a great teacher and she made class easier than the book. It was really not that hard as long as you studied her reviews which help a lot. She is super organized and explains really well.
Teacher is very condescending towards students uses her witt to teardown her students thus discouraging learning. Suggest things are fundamentally wrong with you if you have questions on concepts. It is evident she knows chemistry, but is incapable of being respectful on a human level. Tests are focussed on the exceptions to the rule study those.
Professor was extremely nice and helpful. Really helps you understand whats going on in chemistry!!
if you dont understand something and you ask her for help, she acts like your dumb by giving you statements like you should know this already or go back to the book. Well that doesn't help!!! She grades hard! would not recommend her to anyone
tough class, uses book like bible
Tough class. Need to put in alot of effort to get through with a goood grade. Very clear teaching style and nice, however whenever you need one on one help she makes you feel stupid for asking. But other than that she makes the material very understandable.
very clear and consise on what is expected and what she wants. Use her reviews as a must. She dows expect you to know the basics learned in previous courses. She also expects you to know the math portion of it- she will very briefly review it- you need to know it or practice it. class is tough but completable. got to put in the time.
lab was extremely difficult with her, even though my lecture was 2-3 weeks behind. turned in labs without even knowing what the heck i was doing since the materials hadn't been fully reviewed, or just barely started. grades extremely difficult, and just overall expects everyone to become a chemist major and expects everyone to learn with passion.
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. She is very hard on her students and expects people to automatically know everything already and if you ask a question she treats you like your stupid. Sorry but not everyone wants to be a chemistry major so lay up on the intense nature
She is an extremely condescending person. When you go see her @ office hours, she scoots you out and leaves you with questions not answered. I would NOT recommend this teacher! Sorry Kim
Kim is really sweet and helpful :] Class IS tough though, just study a little and you'll be fine. It may seem scary to ask her a question, but she's actually really nice! I would recommend her.
Absent a lot. Very helpful, tests are just like the notes. Very cheerful and fun. Does not use book much and isnt easy but if you study a lot you will do fine
She over emphasizes to make sure you pay attention to what is on the test. She warns you up front how much studying is necessary. If you have a question that is not covered she wont answer it. Not a lot of time in class to get help, but she guides students to Chem Solutions. Got out early a lot. Get a study partner & go over notes.
Good teacher. She is very clear in class and helpful outside of class. Her tests are tuff but not impossible to get an A on. She is extremely strict on labs reports. At first i thought this was a bad thing but after taking her for lab all the reports for my other classes were cake. I even had one teacher comment on how impressed he was.
This semester was rough! She was absent 4 TIMES! And 2 other times had no voice. She is not very personable AT ALL! Takes FOREVER to post grades. Only 4 A's in the class.
JUST FANTASTIC!
Dr. Kim was great. I loved her class. I miss her so much in chm 151. My new teach sux. I wish Dr. Kim teach 151. Take her class!!!
Dr Kims lab was amazing. I had no interest in chemistry and had a difficult time understanding it and she was amazing at making it understandable. She has a great positive attitude and kept the class interesting. Recommend to all!
Don't buy the book! Never used it!! Dr. Kim (What she makes you call her) was a great teacher! She's a Doctor of Chemistry so she knows her stuff. I really enjoyed her class! I thought it would be hard class, but turned out not too bad. As long as you read the chapter notes (she puts up online) and take some notes from lecture, you're good!
Book wasn't used. In lecture, she spoke to us like we were children. In lab when I didn't understand things, she just stared at me until I walked away. I often felt stupid in the class. For tests, if you pay attention, you should be fine. I just wan't fond of being spoken to like I was writing with crayons.
Dr. Smith was an amazing teacher. She made learning chemistry fun and easy. I wish I had her for the lab as well. She never used the text so don't waste your money. Tests were really easy
She's great at explain material. If you study and do the work its easy to get a good grade on the tests and quizes.
Amazing teacher
Amazing instructor! Took her summer Chm 130 course this summer. She teaches you as if you've never taken a chm course before, unlike the instructor I had last semester and failed. As long as you study a few hours a week you should pass this class. I definetly recommend her.
Great instructor! Everything she taught was super clear. Work hard and study and you can pass this class. I took a different instructor in the spring and got a D. I passed her class with a B!
Book wasn't used don't buy it only use for self tests which you can borrow from chm lobby. Very clear with what is going to be on tests..recommend old hw and practice exams or quizzes. She gives alot of practice just study study study. Not really a people person or will help with questions will refer you to tutoring.
i took chm 130 for summer at 1st i thought it would be hard...but dr kim was really helpful n easy 2 understand...wonderful teacher...
Amazing & fun loving instructor. Speaks slowly & clearly, very helpful & wants to see her students excel! I attempted with another teacher spr 12 & dropped. Took her summ 1 & got an A! What does that tell you? Don't miss class bc it's hard to catch up in any chem class. Study everyday & you'll be fine. Tests are directly from her notes! Good luck!
i had dr kim for chm 130. she is a great teacher. if you take her for chm 130 then you will do good in chm 151 and 152. i had another teachers for chm 151 and chm 152 but i used to study her reviews that is on her website. explain things very clearly. if you want to do great in any chm class then take her.
She is great!
DR.KIM was the ideal instructor for my Chem 130 summer class. She was clear helpful and easy. You do have to study, and take notes. She tells you the important thing that will be on the tests.
I had her for my lab class and I really wish I had gotten her for my lecture too. Though strict she was always helpful and looking out for her students in terms of safety and grades.
She is nice, but very strict. She expects a lot from her chem students and tests are pretty hard. Just study a lot, and really do the practice worksheets. I took the hybrid class, so we needed to study online as well as the in class lecture. That was hard, but still a helpful teacher if extra assistance is needed on a personal basis. Just strict.
Excellent instructor, very hard. Quizzes are from lectures, the book is somewhat helpful. Exams are from the quizzes. She makes it fun, extra credits are helpful to bring grade up. She's passionate about teaching this subject. You will not get bored.
I had Dr. smith for lab, and while she was not a terrible teacher, she seemed very high strung and uptight. While I did received an A in the class, it was not a terribly enjoyable experience. She seemed unapproachable, especially at the beginning of the semester. She also was a very harsh grader, and would take off points for the smallest missteps.
Dr. Kim is a good teacher, however she is not a fair grader. Even if you study hard and attend every class she still take off points for littlest thing there is,another instructor!!!!
Dr. Kim is a really great teacher, one of the best teachers I had so far. The class is not easy but if you study hard and do the worksheets and take notes during the class you will absolutely get an A. I would recommend her for Chm130.
Dr.Kim is a great teacher. She is very clear and a fair grader. The class is not easy but if you study hard, do the worksheets and take notes during the class you will get an A. Don't bother buying a textbook. All notes are provided by the professor, she even provides youtube tutorials which are very helpful. I would recommend her for CHM 130.
MAKE SURE TO STUDY! She gives extra credit! For lab, make sure to print out your assignment otherwise 10 points off. Stern and straight forward. If you put the time in it, she is more than willing to help. She goes off notes, not book. But if you don't understand something, the book helps A LOT! I would take her again, she's a great teacher!
I though she was great! Review your lab prior to class, complete as much as you can ahead of time and pay attention to her lecture. I got an A.
I was stressed going into Chemistry after dropping it 3 times in the past and Kim was fantastic. I went from dropping out to a very high A and I took a Hybrid online course. She was very understanding and clear explaining the material. I wish she taught Chem 151, but I got her for lab next semester :)
tough grader, need to read her notes and do problems in book. class is maditory
Took her on Saturdays. The only way to contact her for help is in email no office hours unless you want to drive to GCU. If I hadn't taken CHM in high school I would've failed she teaches in a complicated style & leaves stuff out that she thinks isn't important +no makeups. The only great thing that helped a lot of people was take home quiz.
Not impressed with this teacher. Took her for lecture (not lab). Not always the best at describing material and she repeats EVERYTHING. I felt like I was in grade school. Doesn't grade entire homework assignments; instead picks and chooses certain questions for 1010 points. If you make me do the work, you need to be prepared to grade it. :(
I LOVE this teacher! She uses her body languages to describe what she is teaching. Sometimes I have difficulty remembering things during test time, but when I sit back and remember what body language she used for certain chemical reactions, I immediately remember! She is very clear and repeats things to make sure we understand. Intriguing!
I took CHM130 with Dr. Kim. She is an amazing teacher! She makes Chemistry so easy and fun all the time. Her exams and quizzes are fair. She doesn't do tricky questions. Don't forget to take notes in every class period. That'll be very helpful. I highly recommend her for students who really want to learn chemistry.
great chem teacher, explains everything very well in lectures and has lots of online help including youtube videos and practice problems. gives everyone the chance to do extra credit and is very straight forward about subject material and what is on tests.
Professor gives clear information, along with examples. She is energetic and lively. I enjoyed her teaching style.
She is very clear about what you need to do in your labs and assignments. She explains everything well enough for you to understand. She is loud enough for you to hear her. She is a bit rude when you ask her a question about something you do not understand. She replies to you in a way like you are stupid and ends up not even helping at all.
Pretty cool professor, grades fair and gives partial credit. Only way to fail this class is to not do a darn thing.
I loved Dr. Kim's lecture she was so clear and everything made sense and if it doesn't reading her super comprehensible chapters for the book she wrote for chm130 will clear it up or her youtube videos which saved my semester and helped refresh my memory of what I learned in a step by step way. She used such clear examples as well. Offers E.C. too
NOT A BAD PROFESSOR IF YOU TOOK HER FOR REGUALR CLASSES, HER HYBRID CLASS WILL BE REAL HARD TO PASS, WILL HAVE TO SPEND AT LEAST 20-30 STUDYING OUTSIDE OF CLASS TO GET A DECENT GRADE, LOTS OF WORK AND HOMEWORK.
Fantastic professor! Her lectures are super easy to follow and she teaches concepts clearly and makes sure the class is getting it. Something I really liked about her in particular was that if you got a good test grade above the average, she always congratulated you and told you to keep up the good work. 10/10 take this professor for Chem!
not very good at explain things.!
Dr. Kim explains everything important in great detail & is a very nice person. She gives you a heads up on what you need to study extensively & if you do the worksheets online her "pop-quizzes" and exams will be a breeze. Ask questions. You will need to study 2-3 hours a week (which is nothing) to do well and the textbooks are very comprehensible.
Dr. Smith is really awesome. She is very upfront on day one as to how much work this class will take to pass. As other reviewers have mentioned, she does give a lot of advanced notice when there will be an in-class quiz -she even sends emails with hints to study. Make sure you don't forget anything as loss in points can severely impact your grade
I took her for lab which is straight forward. I wouldn't call her a tough grader i would say she likes things done right. Great well of knowledge. Her videos online helped me so much I'm so thankful she took the time to do that for us. First impression you might think shes unapproachable, but she actually is really nice. Chm dept is great here.
Dr Kim is amazing. Her lectures are semi-fast paced but if you read the chapter before class like you're supposed to then you shouldn't have a problem. The chapters are only 5-10 pages each, so the reading is minimal. She is very encouraging and provides practice exams, tutorial videos and practice worksheets. You can't help but learn from her.
Dr. Kim REALLY knows her stuff. She is very knowledgable in the subject for sure. The downside to that though, is that she moves really fast. She provides lots of examples, which is great, but if you miss a day you are a million steps behind. She can be stern and strict, but she is also very understanding and helpful. I would recommend her!
Dr. Kim was an exceptional teacher. She provided several extra credit opportunities, as well as having a significant amount of practice problems for you to study. She has easy-to-understand lectures, and she tells you as she goes through the lecture what you should study for the test. Easy A - I only had to study about 4 hours a week.
Kim really knows her stuff I'm very glad I took her for my lab in chemistry. She is very straight forward and always comes around to check on how each lab is going and offers help when needed. The labs aren't very hard as long as you come to them and do the work it's an easy A.
Dr. Kim was an excellent Chemistry professor. In lecture and lab, she was very clear and constantly made sure we understood the material before moving on. She provides extra credit, practice quizzes, and YouTube videos which were VERY helpful. Nonetheless, she made lecture and lab fun. I wish I could take her class again.
she doesn't explain perfectly, i retook the class with another professor and he made the class so much easier
Dr. Kim is one of my favorite teachers at this school. She teaches in a way that shows she really wants you to learn. Feels like she actually enjoys teaching. She co-wrote the textbook we used and provided it for free. She also made youtube videos to help you go over the work at home.
I took a hybrid class. She was very clear and made sure you understood. The textbook is free you just have to print it out. We had 3 homework's the whole semester they were long but we were given enough time to finish. Exams were taken in class and some online. Final is over all 16 chapters. To study there were worksheets, old exams and hw to study
She is amazing and so sweet. She makes the material very easy to understand and you can really see her love for chemistry and her hope that you understand it through her lectures. I'm taking CHM151 now and I wish she was teaching it because she made things so easy to understand.
My favorite teacher at this school. She give you so much extra study material. She provides practice worksheets (they are for practice. not for a grade), she makes youtube videos and gives great lectures. I wish she taught more classes. You can tell she does this job because she wants to and she actually likes teaching.
Honestly she is an amazing teacher. I hate chem and it didn't make me like it but she made me enjoy it for the time being. Watch her videos, do the worksheets she provides on her website. Book is online so you have to print it out before class starts. I didn't get the best grade but only because I started doing all the things I said till the end.
Dr. Kim is an amazing chemistry teacher. She makes chemistry fun and relatable. So long as you study you'll be fine; and she's open to feedback. Would I take this class again, yes and with Dr. Kim Smith.
Smith was a good lab professor, always answering your questions and making sure that you understood the lab. However, she is a very tough grader. That was the one thing that I did not like. Other than that she was ok.
Dr Kim was an okay teacher, she knows how likes something and she wants it that way. Will say she is an extremely tough grader and her lectures and exams can be a bit heavy. but she does provide extra credit and tons of practice problems. this is definitely a class you won't get away without studying.
Hybrid is not for the weak - intense. You basically self - teach. She reads off of the powerpoint for her lectures. She seems to get annoyed if you ask questions, or need clarification. I regret having to have signed up for a hybrid class - it moves quick. Be warned. The "extra credit" offered is during the daytime, when normal folks are working.
One of the toughest professors I've taken! Her whole teaching style is not great she crams 6 chapters worth of stuff into one exam and has you do TWO quizzes before the actual exam. It's like she wants you to fail. She reads off of her powerpoints which really isn't helpful at all. You're basically teaching yourself in this class don't recc at all!
Unless you want to teach yourself the whole course do not take Kim! Take Walters instead!!
Dr. Kim was a great Professor for lab. She answered every question I had in lab. I would take her for 150 if I had the chance. Only negative thing is that her grading was tough but if you do them right and check your math, youll be fine.
This was my first time ever taking chemistry and I had her for lab. She is very knowledgeable in the field of chemistry and knows her stuff. Sometimes she talks to you like youre dumb which might bother some people. The only thing I didnt care for was that she was a tough grader. But overall shes a good chem professor and Id take her again
I loved this class and found Dr. Kim to be more than fair when it came to grading. She gave plenty of opportunity for practice and had videos and study material that made me feel like she set us up to succeed. She even had practice exams that were very similar to the real thing and dropped several quizzes and homeworks from our final grade.
Dr Kim was nice and knows her stuff but there are not very many assignments in this class. She gives like 4 homeworks and 4 tests so you have to know what you're doing or you will not pass. Thankfully GCC tutoring is very good in HT2; without them, I wouldn't have passed.
I hated chemistry until I took her course. I love CHM now! She is so good at helping you understand chemistry basics; I would absolutely take her advanced chemistry classes in the future! I took her online class, and all the assignments and lectures are organized; she has short quizzes at the end of every chapter, and exams over 2-3 chapters.
Dr. Kim's course includes so much material, sometimes it is hard to keep up. Her lectures are very good, though. Just make sure you don't fall behind or there will be a lot of work to do to catch up.
Dr. Kim is the absolute best. She helps you if you need it. She gives plenty of extra work to help you practice. She does a great job at explaining everything. This was my first time ever taking Chemistry in my life and I did just fine with her. 10/10 rating. She's the best! She also lets you know your grades on exams and where to improve.
Dr. Kim is very nice and the way she explains the lectures is easy and understandable. You only need to pay attention to the materials, and you should be fine. The lectures and homework are easy access. Dr. Kim is always available to help.
A bit of a tough grader, but she doesn't ask much in the homework assignments so it feels fair. Recorded lectures are far more detailed than the OER text, but can be very slow-paced. The availability for most exams and assignments are during the most inconvenient times and it's not easy to work ahead. If you work full time, don't take this course.
Dr. Kim is great at introducing chemistry concepts that WILL help you succeed in higher levels of chemistry! Assignments and exams were straightforward and open note, but timed. Each chapter is written out specifically for CHM130. Practice with her resources, stay on top of lecture videos, and you'll love chemistry by the end of her class!
Beware of the hybrid course, you will absolutely need to teach yourself and will need much more resources than the modules offer. I spent more time in YouTube learning than in the actual course modules.
Dr. Kim is very thorough and always there to answer your questions. Always read your lab paper before class, and do your assignments ahead. The lecture class must be ahead of her labs so you know the answers to the assignment. There is a short lecture, the rest you need to study. She gives good grades; there are more points in your lab papers.
She is also the head of the chemistry department I believe so she wants to make sure everything is working really well and explains the content very well.
Dr. Kim is great at explaining everything and is very patient with all of her students. I highly recommend doing every single practice worksheet, even though they aren't for credit. There is always extra credit on exams.
Professor Smith was the best professor that I have had at GCC. Her style of teaching made chemistry seem simple and easy to understand. She was very encouraging and her class was extremely organized. She truly cares about her students. The only reason I passed was because her teaching style was so helpful. Before this class I was bad at chemistry.
I took an online summer class and did well on assignments, but ended up with a D due to poor performance on oral exams. The instructor emphasized memorization, which didn't suit my learning style. If you're considering this course, be prepared to memorize a lot. I can't recommend it unless your good with memorizing.
A lot of memorization. Goes over lectures way too fast and there isn't enough time to memorize everything. Homework is easy and for the most part simple. Once every week there is an activity a majority of the time you are expected to record yourself taking a video explaining a problem or doing some sort of activity that relates to the chapter.
Dr. Kim Smith is one of the most outstanding professors I have had during my time in college. She creates a welcoming, organized, and respectful learning environment where students feel supported. Her passion for chemistry and clear, step-by-step teaching make even difficult topics easy to understand.
