What an awesome teacher! She is passionate and engaging, never in a bad mood! The reading load is heavy, but her structure and format are extremely clear and concise. Highly recommended!
Awesome! If you have the slightest interest in soc, take Kim's class. Passionate, patient and committed to saving the world. She truly wants you to LEARN and will take the time to help you understand concepts. Clearly presents expectations. Must volunteer time outside of class to comunity groups.
Teacher manipulated students into doing outside community projects.
Teacher is so much fun. Makes class fun and interactive. Passionate about sociology. She DOES NOT manipulate students into doing outside volunteer work. You are given a "choice" of doing a volunteer project (10 hrs) or a research paper. Great option for those who do not enjoy doing research!
Kim is a hippy--community service is required to pass. But, she grades fairly and the class is easy.
A great teacher!!! Her lectures are very well organized, easy to follow, and enjoyable. I enjoyed the excuse to get out in the community and do some work. Tests are reasonable and logical. Very interesting class discussions. I wish to be able to teach like her someday.
Very nice teacher! If your a debater I do not recommend this class. Make sure you know the material for the tests, either listen in class or read the book. But very lenient and energetic. Recommend!
I just love her classes and her teaching style. Kim is intellegent, passionate, and fun to be around. I find her material challenging, and I love a challenge. I think she does a wonderful job and I too would love to be able to teach like her someday. Very inspiring.
Kim's class was so interesting. The tests can be challenging because you are expected to know the material not only from the textbook, but class lectures and videos. I would recommend her class in a heartbeat.
Kim is an amazing instructor. I highly recommend taking a soc class from her. I enjoyed my service learning project. If you don't care about others then why even take a sociology class, and complain about having to volunteer? Kim is a passionate instructor, who obviously cares deeply about actually teaching students about sociology, and activis
Kim is smart, sassy and fun. She is really enthusiastic about her job, so her classes are always lively. I heart kim!
Engergetic, enthusiastic, you can tell she loves to teach. I don't think she liked me personally, but it didn't effect the class.
Kim seems to know a lot about her field, but she can be judgemental and uses text books like bibles. It's in your best interest to agree with her and be interested in her weird interests (she thinks Burning Man is IT). The class was interesting until her opinions/lifestyle made it a pain.
Kim is so passionate about what she teaches, it really shows in her teaching style. She makes sure the conversations go into depth and that everyone understands all of the concepts.
Engaging lectures. 2/3rds of the way through the term apologized for how bad the main text was. Showed pertinent videos and had a great guest speaker. Tests were a mix of styles including short essay. Homework assignments directly help with test prep. Term project is service learning or research. Would take another class with her.
I really enjoy this class! I like the more laid-back teaching style that she has. I know it can be off-putting to certain people, but I enjoy going to a class and being able to laugh, to be engaged in a discussion, all for the purpose of learning the material. She lets you know what's expected but isn't overbearing about it.
I did enjoy her class, actually im still in it for a few more weeks. very fun, sassy and wants the class to engage with each other in discussion. she has a Boston type attitude which i love, it reminds me of my family. she knows what she's talking about and homework is every other other week
very fun!!
This was an amazing learning experience. You are warned from the beginning of the term that this class will change your perspective, and its true! It is clear that Kim has a passion for sociology and a gift for teaching which makes for a memorable and worthwhile learning experience. Lessons learned in this class appear in the most unlikely places.
Kim Smith is an amazing instrustor! The atmosphere of her classroom is very fun and relaxing. She likes participation in class, and expects you to do work but the amount she assigns is very managable and her assignments dont really feel like work.
Very awesome teacher, taught me alot!
Great teacher! Wants students so succeed and learn form her class. She has a great personality and makes it very comfortable to ask questions. Very often though she explains things very clearly the first time, so you don't even have to ask questions. One of my fav professors ever.
I have taken many of her classes and would take more but I graduated. I enjoyed her classes and her as a person. She was knowledgeable, helpful, engaging, overall a great educator.
Dr.Kim Smith is a wonderful teacher. I am sure that anyone who has or will take one of her classes will come out with a better understanding of sociolgy. She loves sociology and social issues that take place in our world, It's more than just a job to her.
kim smith is amazing. She is one of the best teachers i have ever had. If you do your homework you will get and A in this class. She is the best.
I adore this teacher. <3 She is obviously in love with the subject she teaches and encourages her students to apply it to their everyday lifes. I am hoping to take all of her classes. AMAZING you will not regret taking her class.
She is very engaging and the work is interesting. I love applying theories in everyday life. So far my favorite teacher at Pcc.
Tests were very easy. She laid aLmost everything out in the notes and tests were 35 questions with 5 short answer and 2 essay questions. They went off of quiz and notes as well as the book she assigned us to read, which was very good. She try's to keep the politics out but occasionally let's it slip. Very respectful to other students and doesn't let people get pushed around by other students in discussions.
Kim Smith is awesome!! She is one of the best teachers I've had so far. She LOVES and is passionate about sociology, extremely knowledgeable and explains things clearly. She is also very funny and engaging. She makes the class fun and easy to follow- great personality! I would definitely take her again!
Dr. Smith is the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I cant wait to take more classes by her, she makes sociology so interesting and encourages engagement in class participation/ discussions. I <3 her.
Boring class as for PHD professor. Her exams are very tough. There is a lot of home work. The SOC205 class requires community service of at least 10 hrs. She never had showed up to class on time during the whole term. We usually had to wait 10 or 15 minutes. I do not view this as a professional attitude..
Kim is a passionate teacher and you will learn alot in her class. Be prepared though. She has high expectations and sometimes talks to you like a grade school student:P
Great teacher! You will learn alot but she is also very strict!
I took 204 for BA req's, and 205 because I fell in love with Sociology, I don't think I would have without Kim. She is the best professor I have ever had and has inspired me and educated me more than anyone I've ever met. Her tests are a little hard, but study-friendly. The reading is interesting even if there's a lot. Don't miss out on Kim Smith.
At first, I didn't like Kim that much, but after a few classes, I found that she is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is very knowledgeable and helpful. I have never had a class where I learned so much, I plan on taking many more classes from her, because I learned a lot from her. She is awesome!
it was hard she talked a lot about stuff that did not matter to the class
I have taken her twice and loved both classes. She is an amazing teacher. you will walk away with more then text book knowledge.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I have had between PCC, PSU and the University of New Mexico. She can be strict but she always has a hidden agenda, she truly wants her students to enjoy and fully understand the material an implement it in their daily lives in order to make positive changes in the world. I take as many classes by her as I can, and so should you!
What an inspiring teacher!! I love her, she has not only made me love sociology, but love school again. Not easy, but I wouldnt want it any other way, because the information is great.
Impatient and unwilling to help some students. Boring class. She's always late.
I could see how some students may not be a fan just because of her strict professional style but Kim turned out to be one of my favorite professors and I walked out applying all the information to my daily life.
Great teacher! Funny, encouraging, hip and enthusiastic. Class was a breeze and I learned a lot, as well as had fun.
Hands down the best professor at PCC. I absolutely adore Kim! She is so smart, witty, clever, funny, and kind! Helps you whenever you need it and works with you if you can't attend class. So much good information taught. I accidentally took the class, but I went back for more Sociology! Everyone should at least take SOC 204 with her!
When I signed up for Environmental Sociology, I was at a crossroads in school. I completely fell in love with sociology and Kim's classes. I took 2 more before graduating and wouldn't be going to PSU without her. She's passionate, connects learning to the community, and just plain fun!Pay attention, do the work and be thoughtful and you'll do fine.
Kim has become one of my biggest female role models. She is passionate about sociology and makes class fun/entertaining. Overall she gets a gold star for being who she is. I'm constantly impressed by the person she is in and out of the classroom. This is one woman who is doing her part to help make the world better. Thank you for inspiring me! <3
Amazing instructor. I took this class online and it was by far the easiest A I have ever received. The material was interesting and assignments were fun. If you are considering sociology online, you would be foolish not to take her class!
Dr. Smith is very helpful, organized, engaging, and provides great feedback that will help you improve as a student. The supplemental material she provides ties in well to the material that is covered in the textbook. The discussion topics and assignments were also very interesting. I highly recommend Dr. Smith!
Class took far more time then I expected (more then more advanced 300-400 level classes), not what I would consider a good class for an online course. While sometimes helpful, Mrs Smith was generally vague in the feedback she gave in all the assignments, posts and tests.
Dr Kim Smith is a very tough grader and is not willing to bend. I took her 204 class this summer and found her to be really picky. However, I did enjoy the readings she assigned but felt as though she expected us to be at a 400 level when in actuality this was the first sociology class for a lot of us.
I've taken Social Problems, Social Change, & the Community Service & Action Seminar courses with Dr. Smith. Her classes WILL prepare you for university & life. She will challenge you- but that's what good instructors do. With Kim's helpencouragementsupport, I am working in a field I love, creating real social change. Educate, empower, engage.
When I got to PCC, I didn't really know what I wanted to study. After taking this class with Dr. Smith, I knew that my path lie in the world of Social Justice. Her passion for knowledge, love of teaching and desire to make this world a better place all come through in both the lectures and the reading assignments. She literally changed my life.
She definitely makes you work for the grade you want. I thought taking this class would be an easy A, but I was got worse grades here than in A&P! She is very nice, and helpful, but she had a weird way of wording things that could be read different ways for different students, making answers wrong because the question was unclear.
This is my 2nd online Soc class with Kim, and I absolutely love her. Very clear, organized, and timely. Sometimes she would grade papers the very day that I submitted them. She's prompt in responding to e-mails and is very thorough. She's professional, respectful, and committed to what she does.
I recommend Kim to every student that I meet. I've taken all of the classes I could with her and miss her style of teaching. If you have the chance to learn from her, TAKE IT!!!
I really enjoyed this online class. She assigned a Malcom Gladwell book (loved it!) along with the textbook. There is weekly discussions, HW assignment due every other week and weekly quizzes during non-HW weeks. There is a mid-term, final, and a 5 page term paper due at the end of the course but all easy to ace as long as you did the reading.
She gives a lot of solid feedback and is willing to work with you to help you be successful in her course. She is an incredible teacher. I left class every sing time having learned something new. I wish she taught every subject.
Her Sociology class was significantly harder than other social science classes. She is picky with grading and takes off points for small things. If you are taking this class to fulfill a prerequisite to nursing, skip Kim and take it with someone else. My friend took sociology at the same time with another teacher and it was much easier.
I took this class to fulfill elective credits, and I'm very happy that I did. Dr. Smith is so passionate and knowledgeable about this field, it's easy to be engaged. I found myself a part of some of the most incredible discussions. The class was so interesting, myself and several other students from 204 decided to take 205 together with Dr. Smith.
Although I loved the subject material in this class, I was surprised a few times with bad grades when I'd followed directions and put in hard work. This is the first class I've taken a pass/no pass on because I couldn't trust that my GPA wouldn't be lowered. It was discouraging because I love Sociology and I'm normally an A student.
Dr. Smith is a great professor to take sociology with. You can tell that she is knowledgeable and really cares about the subject, which shows throughout her lectures. She's always willing to help you if you're having trouble understanding something and gives thoughtful feedback, too. Recommended.
I took this class online and it was my favorite class this term. Kim was accessible when I had questions and her grading criteria was clear. If you follow instructions and do the work which isn't difficult, you'll learn a lot and get an A.
I just finished this class online and I'm so glad I took it from Kim! The discussions and assignments kept me interested and she was answered my questions right away. She didn't assign too much work but each week I learned a lot. I came away with an A and more knowledge of environmental issues. I'd love to take another class from her!
Loveeedddd Dr. Smith. Literally cannot put into 300 words how amazing taking her classes are. They're interesting and she's willing to help you help yourself. Her tests are easy and I love that we can take them at home online. She really wants her students to succeed and it shows!
I'm currently taking her online environmental sociology class and I am feeling completely disheartened. She doesn't *teach* one bit of the material. She tells you what to read and what videos to watch, and lets you know what broad subjects you should pay attention to, but that is about it. Grades on more specific concepts than she herself provides.
I don't understand the last student's review. I took Dr. Smith's online Environmental Soc class last term and she was more engaged in our class than most classes I take. She participated in discussions, provided helpful feedback on my assignments, and responded quickly to emails. It is a tough topic, but she gave me a lot of hope for the future.
Great online teacher. Well organized lectures and readings. Engaging discussions. Do the materials and you will barley need to converse with her. :) Responds very quickly, and leaves interesting information comments. Clear criteria. Would def take again.
This is a pretty standard class and Kim sets clear guidelines for assignments and discussions. The topics are interesting and she gives nice supplemental readings/videos. The quizzes/tests have a few questions that could be worded better/ be clearer but I think its because she creates original questions. Great class overall.
I took Kim for 3 sociology courses and loved every one of them. She clearly cares about her students and participates in discussions enthusiastically. Not many instructors earn the title of 'inspiring', but she definitely does. Can't recommend her enough.
Online class that was a lot of work compared to other classes. There are 10 discussion posts with responses, 4 quizzes, 4 small papers, mid-term and final exam, 5 page term paper. Exams are a combination of multiple-choice and essay questions. The class average on the mid-term was 84%.
Smith was a solid teacher. She definitely knows what she's teaching as I felt like I learned a lot about our planet & how to be more aware of my actions. That being said, this was my most difficult class this term so if you're thinking an online class means easy, nice try. She makes you work for it but it's not unmanageable. Be aware of your time.
Kim is incredibly knowledgable and clearly cares a lot about her field and about the learning of her students. She offered very helpful and clear commentary on discussions and assignments, and I really appreciated her involvment with the class. LOTS of reading, but it's all great material. Get ready to exit this class with a new perspective on life
Ever had a class where you wonder what you are paying for? That's how I felt all term. She expects a lot but doesn't actually teach you anything, even if you reach out to her personally for extra guidance. There is a lot of reading and she poses big concepts to think about but tests on very specific details that she never really goes over.
What a pleasure to study enviro issues with someone as passionate, dedicated, patient, and optimistic as Kim Smith. The course content is so important. She has a gentle, knowledgeable way of teaching the subject matter, and introduced me to several resources that will stick with me. Shes fair and understanding about real life issues students face.
This professor gives consistent feedback. But, if you ask about an answer to a question on a midterm to clarify, she will tell you to refer back to your book and doesn't address the question. Which isn't helpful to a student trying to learn. Doesn't take into account the religious belief of others.
Lots of reading, but she makes it okay. There is a lot of balance in the class. assignments and quizzes are spread out.
I've taken many classes, online and in person; Kim Smith's is hands down one of the very best. Kim is not a particularly tough grader, but there is a lot of reading that she is looking for you connect to on a personal level. Put the time in, and you will do great. If you want a class to make you think, grow, and learn, you've found it. Cheers!
Kim was an amazing professor- clearly cares about her students and her work. SOC204 was informative with online textbook, loved the structure split up by quizzes and homework pieces. As long as you're putting in the effort to read the materials; you've got this and you'll learn a lot! Loved her so much I'll be taking another course of hers.
This was my second class with Kim. She teaches from a free open-source textbook for the classes I've taken, with a low-cost paperback accompaniment. The brightspace/d2l format is really utilized fully in her classes, and I find myself archiving the entire class at the end as the organization, and notes, are invaluable going forward. Approachable !!
Dr. Smith is an incredible professor. I feel like I was incredibly lucky to take a class with her, after being away from school for over a decade. She is an absolute gem. I would highly recommend her.
Very little interaction with students. Her lecture notes lacked detail and assigned videos did not provide clarity. Questions on exams did not necessarily match up with textbook reading. Very little guidance was given for written homework and discussion submissions. Without prior knowledge on the topics, you will struggle to pass.
Kim is so kind and super understanding! Class overall was great, although was heavy on the reading. Kim's kindess really made it all okay!
Kim is an easy grader. There are discussions every week and a few papers which are easy to write if you look over the material and book (Outliers). I never actually interacted with her but her online set-up is easy to follow along.
Dr. Smith was an informative and kind instructor, I highly recommend her. Her course material is all very valuable and fascinating when you are actively engaged with it. She has clear expectations that are manageable and she was accessible outside of class. I thoroughly enjoyed this class!
Great course, the textbook was updated in 2021 so the information is incredibly relevant, its also free online. Dr. Smith really wants you to succeed. As long as you turn in homework on time, you have the chance to re-do it and get a better grade. Overall she is super nice 10/10 would recommend
Kim Smith is knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. Her grading was more than fair and clear. Kim worked with me to finish assignments for partial credit. Her feedback was wonderful, and this class was very engaging! I would 1000X take a class with her again, and I highly recommend her as a teacher if you are on the fence about it.
Kim is very passionate about sociology! Her online class is straightforward on what to expect. There are weekly discussion posts with replies, only 4 quizzes, and 3 homework assignments. There is a midterm exam and a term paper for finals. There are 2 textbooks, so there is a lot of reading to do. This is a heavy course but it's doable. :)
Kim Smith is a great professor, There is an free online textbook and another book to read so it is a lot of reading but it necessary for discussions and assignments. discussion post every week and you only have to reply to one person, 3 assignments, midterm and final exam, and a final paper. I learned a lot and really enjoyed this class.
Very well organized curriculum. She distributes the quizzes and tests in a digestible way, but you are definitely going to want to stay fresh on your reading and lecture notes. Good lectures; she has a passion for the subject which helps a lot. Definitely going to be reading and writing a lot, but you'll get a lot out of it.
I feel like I'm paying to have someone sponsor their book and concepts to me. Although it's an online class, it feels very disconnected all around. There are no video lectures, just expect to read. Her lectures are very short, and she depends a lot on outside resources. I wish the class were more fleshed out, considering its potential.
She's caring and encouraging. Very easy to get an A if you just participate in discussions. But for Intro to Environmental Sociology the materials were out of date and it felt like the rigor wasn't there. If you want an easy class with a nice teacher, she's fine.
