Broad range of information to digest makes the class difficult, but she really tries to help students as best she can. One of the more student oriented teachers on campus.
A lot of information, reading and homework. She is very informative and helps if you need it. Take advantage of the extra credit and study for the tests.
Her notes are all you need. Her lectures are very organized, and easy to follow. Final was open book. Get there on time to take easy quizzes, stay the entire time for easy querries. Not a lot of reading really required to do well, though it helps. Got an A easily.
Very easy class...she is really helpful. Use your notes and homework study guide and easily pull of an A or B. Make sure to take advantage of all extra credit! The EC on the tests are so easy and can bring you up an entire grade. Pay attention to all of the drawings and the people she briefly talks about.

Lots of notes, try not to miss ONE day cause there is a lot of info you'll miss, loved her class b/c it was hard and a challenge, but I learned so much!
She is a very good teacher. Lots and lots of notes and overwhelming. She is very hard. People barely got A's and B's on tests. Overall, you learn a lot but no easy A.
she really helps you if you dont understand something. always available
One of the most difficult teachers. She has 10 random pop quizzes that start at 7:59 for an8:00 class.Plan on coming earlyand leaving late. Her tests aregrueling and 14-18 pg long. She does no test review except for 2separate 18 pg packets with extensive information. The class ave is well below C. If you are just trying to finish GE,avoid this teacher.
This isn't an easy class. Tests are tricky because she tries to reword definitions and such so that they are not exactly what you studied, often making them awkward and hard to understand. However, homework assignments are worth A LOT, and are an A for effort kind of thing. There is a lot of info to learn.
She is an excellent teacher as far as teaching the subject and answering questions. Can be rude at times and, as far as homework and tests go, this is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I spent more time on this class than my other classes combined last semester. If you take this class, good luck!
Very helpful and knowledgable about subject. You need to go to class for quizzes and queries. Explain subject clearly and tries to be funny. Earth Science, like an science, is a hard subject and if you aren't willing to put in the time to learn than you shouldn't be there. She is a good teacher if you put in the work. ALWAYS willing to help!
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER! I took a class with her and failed, i was left thinking, maybe i am not smart enough. Next sem took it with Holly Dodson. Holly was the best teacher and i passed with an A.This teacher laughs a lot but is truely evil! It's hard to tell what's on the back of her mind! She gives u surprise quizes!Tests are hard!
Surprise quizzes and hard tests? It’s called college. She is a very good teacher and practically gives you the exam in advance with homework packets that you can fill out during class. If you pay attention you don’t even have to read the book. Quizzes aren’t very hard, they are really only to make sure you get there on time. NO EXCUSE TO FAIL!
Really great teacher - really knows her stuff! Great sense of humor and enjoyable to take Geology and Earth Science from. You will learn alot and see great examples.
Kim enjoys pop quizzes, "quarries", and mind-numbing tests, full of litte details that'll screw you in the end. Very note oriented class, be sure to write even when she's not, and draw her pictures too, they're on the test. There are only a couple of home work packets, and they're cake. She loves earth, so don't mock her if you're looking to pass.
Teacher is funny and nice, but you have to be in class every time or else you will miss important stuff! Tests are unbelievably hard, and you REALLY have to pay attention in class and read your book to be succesful.
Great teacher, really on top of things. She works hard to keep up with grading and wants everyone to pass. She won't give away grades but if you put the effort in you'll be rewarded. The people who fail and get Ds are just lazy and want an easy A class. Sciene wouldn't have been my first pick for an easy class though.
great teacher- great class. prof. stevens makes a 2 hr class fly by! lots of extra credit- very personable and funny... TAKE THIS CLASS!
I had Prof. for Earth Science Lab over the summer. Lots to learn in a short period of time, but there is tons of EC. Exams are tough ~ but this is college. She has a great sense of humor.
Take this class, it's a great class. Ms. Stevens is very excited about natural disasters. She's tough, but fair. I probably would be doing a little better if I had read the book. But, her lecture style is so good that I still did well on the tests.
This was such a cool class! I never knew there was so much going on in the world around me. Stevens was really fun and made the class really intersting. I'm recomending it to all my friends who need to take a physical science class to get their degree.
I wasn't that interested in this stuff until I took this class. Now every time I hear about a natural disaster I know what they're talking about. Who knew that there was a supervolcano in California?! It's a good thing I live in Rocklin, seems like it's the only safe place on Earth! This class was way less boring than I thought it would be.
CRAZY hard class, everyone in our class was extremely struggling to keep up. SOMEHOW I ended up with a B in this class. I think she realized how insanely hard the class was and took pity on us. There was so much she wanted you to learn it was impossible to absorb it all. If you are ready to STUDY SO HARD for an A and learn a lot, take her.
She is probably the worst teacher that I have had in my entire life. When nobody was able to get an A on the first test and we suggested that she may want to consider how difficult she was making them, she said "No, that sounds about right." I would sooner rip out my eyes and light myself on fire then take this class again.
Wow.. This the worst teacher I've ever had. We would go four chapters with no quizzes and then take a massive test that would last for about an hour and 45 minutes. O yea and she would test on minute details she covered once in a boring lecture. She does a very poor job at answering questions. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class.
I enjoyed this class. If one puts in the effort, it will be rewarding. "Easy 'A'"? No. Worth the effort? Absolutely. If you don't command even a middle-school level of comprehension you might look elsewhere (as some prior reviews indicate). For those attending _college_, her classes are a must! [And she's HAWT! ;-)]
This class was terrible, the person below me is an idiot.
I'm sure she's a nice person but she is the WORST teacher ever!! Absolutly horrible! 2/3 of my class failed the midterm. I fainted when i pulled a C in the class. Plan on coming more then once a week & on homework in this class. You're handed a lab she assumes you've talked about it in lecture. She thinks everyone is a Geology major TAKE ACKERMAN!!
wow what to say...shes nice, funny at times, and willing to help IF YOU BUG HER ENOUGH. I probably asked her every single question on the packets assigned and still didnt get it. if you feel bold take this class. The only reason i feel i passed is because she liked me
I took her for the Earth Science Lab and it was VERY VERY VERY hard but she was an exremely helpful teacher and always willing to help you out so I passed with a B. Plan to work VERY hard (as if its a 4 unit class). Always show up!
avoid like the plague. Do not take earth sci for GE. Instead Take Geography with A Lab, you will be thanlful in the end. She is not helpful whatsoever, has a shrill laugh. If I were a teacher and saw that half my class failed the midterm, I would think that maybe it was my "teaching" method. Not Her. she expects everyone to love EARTH SCIENCE
Every class meeting, Kim runs through her ppts, adding in notes (write everything down!) and throughout the semester there are 6 pop quizzes, given at her leisure, at the beginning of class. There are 2 difficult "midterms" and there is 1 "final" - she is not easy, but you will leave her class well informed, and don't skimp out on the homework!
Treat this 1 unit class like a 4 unit class. That's how much you'll need to study. It's a brutal class. That said, if you do the packets, and know how to do the packets, the midterm and final are incredibly easy. There's a lot of EC available for cushion, and she's a great instructor. Also, know the mineral cart inside and out. Study hard.
Without a doubt the most boring teacher I have ever had. She knows her science, but has a very monotone, annoying voice. Rarely any homework. Quizzes about once a week (definitely study, not easy). Her first test is almost impossible, and about half the class drops, but after that not too bad. DO NOT take this class for an easy A.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life! She treats a 1unit lab like 4units.She is completely unhelpful to her students,&she barely explains how to go about doing the labs. She thinks it?s as though her students taking the lab have a lot of geology experience prior. My whole class despised her,&her teaching method,or shall I say lack there of.DROP!
First off, she fell behind 2 weeks in class due to incessant babbling about stuff not on tests. Now, one week before the final, she gave 14 pages of HW, a 14 pg take home test, 80 pages of reading and is going to lecture for 1.5 hours before the final. The final is half on the material given this week. Just horrible.
I loved her! She is extremely clear in her lectures, makes sure the students understand. She is one of the best professors I have ever had. Tons of extra credit!
She definetly knows her material, but lacks the ability to break it down and teach it. She cannot gage where her students are and continues on with the course material regardless of significant signs from the students.
She was always wiling to help and taught material well. If you are in Geo lab make sure to go BOTH days, it will help a lot. The people complaining about it being hard did not try. People in my class would just copy and finish as fast as possible, then complain about the teacher. Do your work and you will get an A like me. Easy class lots of Ex Cr
I loved her!! She made learning fun and was well organized in her lectures! She also gives extra credit!
Treats a 1 credit course like a 4 credit course. WAY Too much homework/time spent out of class for a 1 credit lab. AVOID if you are looking for an easy A or B to fulfill your lab requirement. Rambles for hours at a time without purpose. If you are planning on majoring in the Earth Science field then take the class. Otherwise, run!!!
Lab is taught completely different than the lecture--almost contradictory. Labs are hit and miss on difficulty. Kim should be a geologist, not a teacher--fails to bring concepts to an amateur level. Contrary to promised, final exam has at least 5 questions that were not addressed in the lab packets. Attend both days. Before the final I had an A.
I am not kidding when I tell you this lady will ruin your gpa and your plans to transfer. Do not waste your time with this lab because passing requires you attend BOTH 3 hour labs, twice a week. She is terrible at lecturing, does not convey the information on her labs to the class so everyone is left teaching themselves. Avoid if possible!!!
Kim isn't the worst teacher, though i have certainly had much better. Unfortunately, she isn't the greatest at explaining detailed processes. Labs are generally pretty easy, and if the student is focus, are absolutely doable in a 3 hour lab session. Not a terrible class to take for people who need to pass a lab, and she offers A LOT of extra credit
She is an amazing person. Will explain any question you have. But, she gives you 150 point tests and most of us failed. A lot of it wasn't in the packet, or it was specific to a region and not a general concept. It's just a lot of work she gives. A lot of topics to know in such a short amount of time. She makes it interesting but it was hard.
This is supposed to be a 1 credit class and is taught like a 4 credit class. Her directions are VERY unclear and she is very rude to her students on many occasions. She teaches the lab with topographic mapping first and astronomy last, which is the opposite of the lecture course. It will throw you off in both classes. CHOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!
Very hard teacher. Wants you to learn the material the way she knows it. She is nice, lectures are interesting and assignments are easy enough. The tests are HARD.
Syllabus is 'tentative' so due dates are never certain, DO NOT miss class. Gives thick homework packet with each unit to be done by test date. Rushes through lectures so quickly you can't take notes so she can say she covered everything, so you do not absorb anything for the actual test. Tends to blame students though she didn't cover material.
Worst teacher at Sierra. Not helpful, hard labs, doesnt clairfy when you ask for help. She thinks that everyone loves science like she does and wants you to learn th information like she knows it. Treats this class like a 4 unit class when its only 1 unit. also, made 4 students cry in her class. hands down worst teacherperson ive ever met.
My experience wasn't all bad but it wasn't all good either. She means well and doesn't want students to drop out, but her class involves too much; long readings, lengthy lectures, quizzes and quires, and finally the longest tests I have every taken while going to college. The only thing which made a difference was the extra credit she offered.
Took her lab class. Lab packets are easy points, the test questions were right out of the packet. She offers extra credit on every lab. I wouldnt take her lab with a different professor, it throws you off and makes more work for you
horrible teacher don' take her! she gives you long homework packets that's basically petty work. You take quizzes before class so she knows you read but they aren't basic comprehensen they are legit hard test questions and when you go to lecture shell be on a previous section because her power points r so much info & test are about 100 questions
The lectures are so long but she knows what she's talking about. The very many quizzes and tests are easy of you read and pay attention to her lectures. Long homework packets given before tests. Prof Stevens allowed us cheat sheets for the tests which were helpful and she offers extra credit to ensure a good grade. Super nice and nicely quirky.
The dates on the syllabus are not accurate. There are an excessive amount of tests and quizzes that do not benefit the course in any way. DO NOT MISS CLASS!! She gives pop quizzes at the end of class frequently. If there are seats left in another ESC10 class, take that one!
I like her as a person, I don't like her as a teacher. She's nice and she has good stories sometimes, and she's definetly passionate, but her lectures are pretty dry and boring. There's two online quizzes a week but there is an option for like 40 extra credit points. unless you are really into earth science I reccommend a different instructor.
This lady is crazy, literally. DO NOT TAKE!Nobody knows that is going on. What she says doesn't make scence. She will not help if you need, or clarify. You will spend the whole time wondering what is going on while she says, "I hope you guys don't have kids because this world is over-populated." She treats this class like it's a PhD. Course
Prof Stevens is a really nice but she rushes through lectures when she gets behind and it becomes hard to learn anything she is saying. There are online quizzes that you have to do before every class so if you slack off on them, your grade will drop. The good thing is that she gives a ton of extra credit.
Kim is really nice as a person, but not as a professor. School keeps her just because she has so many years of experience. she does not care if you pass or not. Too much work for 1 unit. if geology is not your major, take some other lab.
This was by far the worst class and professor I have ever experienced. Be prepared to learn the material on your own and get thrown for a long, confusing and impossible loop. DROP ASAP or DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER!!!!!
This lab was only one day a week, so attendance was SO important. We did the entire lab packet in class, and if you didn't finish it, you did it as homework with no real due date - you could take as long as you needed. The labs weren't graded on accuracy, those are easy but the tests were dense and hard. Directly from the labs but lots of info
She expected us to know everything she was talking about. Tests were very hard even after studying for hours. Is VERY precise with the grading and even one little dot off on some of the labs she marks you down. Shes a nice person but had to drop the class because of how difficult it was.
She explained the labs as if she were talking to a colleague with a PhD on the material, and her grading expectations were so specific that if you were even slightly off then she would dock you multiple points. She had mentioned that even the dean has talked to her about changing the unnecessarily high demands of the course, yet still hard. AVOID!
Worst professor ever!!! So rude and condescending and makes you feel bad about yourself for not understanding the material. Has no problem embarassing you in front of the class either. Labs are to be learned on your own with little help. STAY AWAY!
Her tests are a joke. You're allowed a page of notes however she is so specific with her questions that if you don't absolutely love the subject and are captivated by it, you won't remember material for the off the wall questions she comes up with. Besides her tests she's fairly reasonable. If you don't like geology, even a little, don't take her.
If you are taking this class for general education- DONT TAKE KIM STEVENS. Extremely high demands; no exceptions for beginners; and the 3 hour/ 1 unit lab will turn into your most demanding class. Not even a geology major, but she seems to think so.
I cannot stress enough how fast you should run. This 1-credit class was insane. Nobody had any idea what was going on, what was required, or what she was talking about. I doubted my own sanity in that classroom. I'm a 4.0, but I only scraped an A after many tears, screaming into pillows, and an absurd amount of EC. Most didn't even manage Cs. Run.
Well, I took this class as a non science major, in hopes that it would be easier for me. BUT she somehow made Earth Science SO difficult. It's IMPOSSIBLE to pass with out doing the tons of points in extra credit. If you want to suffer, do the most work you have ever done, and have it be unnecessarily hard for the subject matter for 1 unit- Sign up!
Kimberlee is a solid choice for an Earth Science teacher. You must be on top of it, but she gives a lot of chances for extra credit and assignments that can get your grade up. Her quizzes are on material straight out of the book so if you genuinely read, you will do well on the quizzes. She wants students to do well, and will try to help as needed.
She isn't a bad person, however, I really dreaded her class. She gave GIANT packets that you had to understand yourself. She assumed our lecture classes were at a further pace than they were (making it harder to understand the content she gave us). Due dates were never clear and so many people dropped out after our midterm.
This was easily the worst class I have ever taken in my life. Not only are you set up for failure but this professor doesn't care if you succeed or fail. She never explains the labs and calls herself lazy. More than half the class failed each test and she blames it on our studying. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADES AND FUTURE.
RUN as fast as you can from her class. By far the worst and hardest class ive ever taken my three years at Sierra College. Her class is unbelievably difficult for being an intro ESCIL class. If you care about your grade I highly suggest choosing a professor who teaches well. I do have to say she offers extra credit, but for real just dont.
easily the worst professor ive had. shes unorganized, doesnt give clear instructions, and expects you to do the work on your own. ive never had to work so hard to teach myself and finish assignments for any of my classes, much less a class worth 1 unit. do NOT take this class if you dont have to. if you do have to, im sorry and good luck.
Tons of work with little information to go on. The lab packets are 10+ pages long and you are expected to know all this information that has not been covered in the lecture or any handouts given. Not good at explaining, you feel completely lost 24/7.
DO NOT take this teacher. I signed up for this Lab without checking this website. BIG MISTAKE. No one in the class knew what was going. She killed any interest I had in earth science and made the learning process miserable. Her quizzes lasted 1.5+ hours. She seems like a nice person but she's a horrible teacher. Worst I've had. Save yourself.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! Awful job explaining anything, expects you to just know all this information. WAY too much work for a single unit class. I do more work in this class than in my 8 week online Earth Science class. RUN AWAY!!! Not enough time to complete her crazy tests which require you to download, print, fill out and upload to the exam
I figured my last semester of junior college would be easier than the rest, nope. Professor Stevens seems to make a general Ed course harder to pass than it should be! It was hard in person but due to covid-19 switching to online was even WORSE. She expects if its in her lab packets that youll understand it, but doesnt help you understand at all
I took this class during my first semester of college and I've never been so stressed out. She sets such unrealistic standards and threw giant packets. She doesn't explain things clearly and has a bit of an attitude when you ask for help. I retook the lab with Paul Carpenter and it was great! Please take his class instead!!!
Kim Stevens was the worst professor I have ever had.I took her during the spring semester when all of this COVID stuff started happening and it was the worst decision ever. She offers almost no guidance and I pretty much had to teach myself the course. The rock and mineral quizzes are impossible to get good grades on. RUN, this class will ruin you.
Second time taking this class thinking she might change. NOPE you would think that with covid she would take her students consideration for the following semesters. You would think she would be more understanding. No lectures, thinks labs are all you need. No guidance, rude over the phone for help. Thinks you can teach yourself. Not worth it, run.
She makes a gen ed class a nightmare. Gives an overview of the packet & sends you on your way to figure it out. Online lab was not any better. Reported to the school/department dean about her nothing was done. Grades so strictly on labs. Exams & quiz are horrible. Expects non majors to have everything memorized. Wish a diff prof. taught it instead.
Professor Stevens is hands down THE best teacher I've had the pleasure of having. She goes in depth with every aspect of her class and had always left me wishing the class was longer. She gives great lectures, has hands on examples of many rocks and crystals, and just made the entire learning experience fun. I highly recommend her!
Kim works harder for her students than any other professor. Labs werent easy, but Kim would be available any time of day to help with labs over the phone or email, give clear and helpful feedback, and offered lots of extra credit and partial credit on tests and quizzes. I couldnt have passed this class with any other professor. She rocks!
Very knowledgeable/accessible;wants you to learn (excellent videos) but many problems with online system. To submit homework and get access to the next assignment there were mandatory quizzes requiring 100%. Very high expectations. Download maps then upload during Midterm/Final. Tested every subject , Need good printer/scanner or you will fail!
Professor Kim is the right one to teach this class. She truly cares about you passing but you have to put in the time and effort. Get ready to read and be able to take reading quizzes she drops the lowest four. She is easily reached by phone or through Canvas if you have a question.
This class was an actual nightmare. It was so bad I wouldn't put it on my worst enemy. Very very little of what she lectured/what was in the textbook actually appeared on the exams. The exams were extensive with very few multiple choice and containing content not taught. Prerequisites on every single module/assignment. RUN! Can't stress it enough.
It is clear that she deeply loves the subject matter, but she has not passed that love on to me. Reading quizzes are unnecessarily difficult, questions are often misleading, and lectures would probably be more enjoyable in person but online aren't great. The class makes me anxious and disappointed a lot. Would not recommend taking this professor.
Reading quizzes every chapter. Lecture videos kept having errors. Many ex credit chances, easy A if you try. Each chapter has a study guide packet, time consuming but helps. Assignment doesn't release until you complete the one before, so you can go your own pace-ish. She really cared ab students and has passion. Tests are average.
Kim was an amazing teacher! I couldnt have been more thankful for all of her help during the semester. She truly has a passion for her subject, and really tries to pass it on to her students. If youre struggling she is always there to help, and offers extra credit if your grade isnt what youd like. Yes there is quite a bit of work, but worth it
Kim was amazing. Yes there was a lot of work, but if youve got the motivation, this class should be an easy A. I took this class over the summer and I struggled a bit but I think if I had taken it during the fall or spring I would have done so much better. Kim truly cares about her students, their learning, their time, and their grade.
There was quite a bit of work, but then again I took it over the summer. I think if you have a good mindset going into it you should be fine! Just be prepared for lectures and a 15 min reading quiz with every chapter.
If youre looking for the right professor for next semester, look no further! Kim is the perfect professor to teach this class! She cares so much plus there were so many extra credit opportunities! You could end up with over a 100% if you really try!
DONT DO IT!! Was the most difficult teacher I have had by far. Science is my favorite subject and she made me want to rip my hair out. She spends a lot more time talking about the stuff shes done in her career than talking about the actual course material. Very difficult grader and often has quiz questions that were not covered in class. RUN!
Tests are constructed from outside material, students are penalized for seeking it. Answer a question with the definition she provides you, its plagiarism. lectures lack precise information needed for exams. 4 6 hours of lecture viewing, with pop quizzes throughout, at least 2- 3 HW packets , and 2 quizzes PER WEEK. One exam every two weeks. RUN
Honestly one of the worst professors I had at sierra college. All of mine had been pretty good up til her. For a basic earth science class I was taking for my GE requirements she made it extremely harder than it needed to be. Extreme amount of lecture watching, note taking, and assignments. I would just recommend steering clear.
There's no way anyone one of these positive comments was a real student and not her. -Grades Hard -Extreme amount of homework -Makes it her life purpose to find anyone who cheated on her exam. Luckily I was not included in this but she sent out an email to the whole class talking about expelling people who used Chegg.. ITS ALSO EARTH JUST SCIENCE
Is 2-5 studguide PACKETS of 2-6 pages due every 3-4 days. 2 reading quizzes every 3-4 days. Is a harsh grader. Is inconsiderate with students time. Is not helpful when you have questions to ask. In lectures, half of is to learn and the other is talking about her own experiences. Do not take this class at all costs.
All of the good reviews are made by Kim and her friend when she's not failing students. This general ed course is more heavy than any pre-law class Ive taken. Each assignment needs to be an essay in length or you can kiss you're B (she wont give A) goodbye. I rather drink from the core of the earth than take again (am I using my terms right Kim?)
Tough grader with frequent work due, but using unstuck ai alongside the textbook helped me breeze through the class. Definitely a challenging course - not for the faint of heart.
I am currently in her 8-week class. It honestly is the hardest class I've ever taken & I've taken 8 week classes before. It takes alot of studying, reading, & staying persistent. She cares about your success and outlines how to be successful. She is responsive online and on the phone, and has always been kind and constructive with her feedback.
DO NOT take this class with this professor unless you want to rip your hair out. She's extremely tough on grading and likes answers to be extremely specific. She assigns outrageous amounts of study guide and expects you to do them extremely quick. She uses her personal phone number to contact students and pushes you to text her which I find creepy!
wouldn't recommend
If you're not much of a geology person, I would choose a different subject to take. Some study guides are long and have lots of lecture videos to watch. You can't do the bare minimum when filling out the study guides or else you will be marked down. Honestly, the best advice is to organize yourself and stay on top of things for this class.
