Read all your articles she gives you online as you take quizzes everyday in class over them which go toward your grade as she wont tell you ever the answers to them. All her power-points she lectures are online which is nice. Exams are fairly easy. She will call random people out in class to answer questions also. No book needed!
She makes the class more difficult than necessary which is irritating but she could be a lot worse.
Dr. Kim Thompson will treat you like a middle schooler. She will make you clap when she wants your attention and will stare at you and stop the lecture if she hears one noise. She makes such a simple course way more confusing because she doesn't even know the information herself. Not recommended. Look elsewhere.
Dr. Thompson is great professor. She is clear cut and gets straight to the point along with being there for help when it is needed. I reached out to her for help with my group project and really helped me complete it the right way. Her lectures are long but she does a great job of keeping students interested and making material easy to undertand
She has her good moments, but overall she can be very difficult to deal with. Personality, not my favorite. She has a tendency to not take ownership to her faults and can be rude. Grading wise, I do not respect her. Her grading is not clear and she will often not appreciate your work. Study for the exams & you'll end with an A or B.
She took our entire class completely off-guard. The week before finals she announced that anyone who had gotten all A's or above, excluding and A- , would not have to take the cumulative final. It is a lot easier to pass four, sectioned, exams throughout a semester than a cumulative final is all I have to say and no notice was not professional.
If you read the article she posts for you to read and answer the learning objectives, you will pass. The tests are basically the learning objectives and the clicker quizzes during class. So go to class and do the work and you'll be fine. Topics were relatively interesting, as well.
Kim Thompson is not as bad as everyone says she is and this is coming from someone who SUCKS at science. I did all the learning objectives and used my book often. Do the clicker quizzes and those are practically the test. GO to class do the quizzes and study the power points she puts online for the test and you will get an easy A.
I believe Dr. Thompson is a new professor at OU, but she's rather good for a newcomer. She may come off as strict at times, but if you're respectful she won't bother you. Don't use your cell phone during quizzes. AND DO THE READINGS! The class is based entirely on the readings. It is key to passing the class!! You MUST also show up. Easy A overall.
Every class starts with a clicker quiz, on that week's reading. She then gives a lecture, on pretty much the same subject matter as that week's reading. There is then another clicker quiz, with all the same questions as the first one. Good choice if you need an easy science credit. If you want to learn anything, try something else.
Kim Thompson is not at all understanding, kind, or a good teacher. Her lectures are long and boring and she treats you like a 12 year old. Avoid at all costs.
She's very rude and when you ask a question it's clear that she rarely knows the answer but overall if you do the work you'll pass the class.
Prof. Thompson was annoying at first, but all her little clicker quizzes PAID OFF when studying for tests, and she drops your lowest test score at the end of the semester which SAVED me. She is really helpful and the class is not that hard. All her learning objectives are easy and clear.
If you want to be treated like you're in middle school again this is the class for you. She belittles you and makes you look like you are the dumbest person on earth if you don't know the answer. Expect to read about a lot of things you don't care about at all. She's very anal about electronics in the classroom even if you're taking notes on a comp
You can tell Thompson is passionate about her subject, which makes a boring class (content-wise) less boring. You take 4 exams, and she drops your lowest one. Test questions come exactly from the notes and clicker quizzes that you do each class. She tries to make the class pretty hands-on!
Wonderful professor. Learning objectives every night but only takes 15 minutes to complete. Quizzes every day over learning objectives but only worth 5% of your final grade. Really cares about her students. Impossible to fail if you pay attention.
Dr. Thompson is overall rude and not at all understanding that we are human. She does not understand that sometimes stuff happens and she does not treat this class as a Tier II class. She doesn't understand that most students in this class are not biology majors and therefore do not understand over half of the things she says. Avoid at all cost.
Kim Thompson is a horrible teacher. No help at all. Take any other class!
If you show up to class, do all the readings, and participate in the group work, it's an extremely easy class. There is a clicker quiz at the beginning and end of every class, and the exams are based exactly off of those. There are also things called "If-Ats" that you do in groups, where you scratch off your answer on an answer card. Super easy.
She is awesome. I have her fro PBIO now and she has made it so easy. The clicker quizzes are almost exactly like the tests so it is so simple to study for exams. She also really does care about each student as long as you show her respect and show an interest.
Dr. Thompson is an amazing professor and passionate about plants and it makes the students more interested. Her class is not hard, she give weekly learning objectives telling you what you need to know and the exams are strictly that. There are clicker quizzes so attending class is important, Over all one of the best professors I have had!
I would definitely take this class again. I really liked Dr. Thompson. She is so clear cut in what you need to know, and as long as you do the readings and learning objectives, there is no way you will fail. Attendance is mandatory if you want points for the daily clicker quiz, but I never missed a class because I enjoyed her lectures.
She makes the class super interesting and her love for plants is so cute and makes you excited about them too. She has a ton of fun stories that are relevant to what you're learning so the classes are fun, which is good because it's important to go to them
While Kim was very passionate about plants, one-on-one conversations with her were not the best. She makes belittling comments, acts like you're stupid and gets sassy if you ask something that she might have already said or was even slightly unclear about. Definitely read and show up, the tests weren't bad but she's not the best person.
Dr. Thompson provided the slides after lectures, so it was easy to study for the class. The clicker quizzes prepare you for the exams-- go to class and do the reading! She is willing to go over grades during office hours or over e-mail and was very helpful over the semester.
You need to attend the classes, not because the clicker quizzes will make that much of an impact, but you need to get the info to pass the exams. Attend, stay off your phone even half time and do a decent review before the exam, you'll be just fine.
Dr. Thompson was one of the toughest graders I had this semester. I didn't really enjoy coming to class because of everyday clicker quizzes, and how she would call on students randomly. I think that made it difficult to learn. All the tests are right from the clicker quizzes though. Just show up to class and do your readings and you will pass.
She is literally horrible
Easiest class I've taken so far and not even a science-field major. Just do the reading and reading questions before class and she goes over what she had you read and answer from it. Power-points are easy to follow, just one group project, but must participate in other group work. Easy class overall
She is extremely cold and standoffish. She finds ways to take off points and is not the type of teacher who is understanding. Very harsh and quite honestly, very rude. Would not recommend taking her class unless you are required to.
Thompson is tough but fair. Expect daily clicker quizzes, and expect those clicker quiz answers to appear on the exams. She is no-nonsense and doesn't care about your excuses, but she does want you to learn, and I learned plenty this semester. Would take a course with her again.
Very judgmental. Does not give good explanations or feedback.
She was very rude and acted like it was all well-known information. She gives clicker quizzes at the beginning and end of every class. Her exams are pretty easy if you do all the learning objectives from the reading, but the class was very time consuming.
Dr. Thompson is undeniably passionate about the course material but her teaching style holds her back from transmitting that passion. She randomly calls on students and each class has a daily clicker quiz at the beginning and end of class. She can be hilarious at times and has her qualities. Overall, she's manageable just read.
I did not like Dr. Thompson's class. She was very boring with her lectures and she is super strict about everything from talking in class to being on your computers. She really makes you learn everything because she doesn't give you any easy way outs. Tests are all cumulative so they are super hard. Clickers are used everyday
Great teacher overall. All of the exams are based off of the clicker questions at the beginning and end of class. Homework on new subject every night. One project, group. Powerpoints uploaded to blackboard.
Kim wants her students to know the material instead of just memorizing it for her class. There's clicker quizzes at the beginning and end of each class which counts as attendance. Homework before every class. Exams are all cumulative.
She teaches a 250 person class like a 30 person section which makes it extremely complicated. Also, she reminds me of a mom who thinks shes cool, but its strict, and rude actually.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS TAUGHT BY THIS PROFESSOR. Very rude and disrespectful. The class itself is easy but she makes it extremely difficult. Quizzes are at the beginning and end of every class. She is extra and annoying.
This class is an easy A as long as you read, show up for the daily clicker quizzes, and study the objectives for the exams. The exams are cumulative, but she tells you what to study from previous readings/ powerpoints. It's an easy natural sciences course for non science majors. She can be a little rude sometimes. Overall, I would recommend.
The worst teacher ive ever had
I thoroughly enjoyed this class and would recommend taking it. The way it's set up is that you read and take guided notes in the textbook before coming to class, and then take a (very easy) quiz over the reading you did. The test questions are are predictable based off the guided reading's learning objectives. You know exactly what to study.
Dr. Thompson is very knowledgeable on her content, but she is one of the rudest profs I have ever had. I would take her classes again because it was very easy. She drops the 6 lowest clicker quizzes, lowest exam, and lowest assignment. Definitely an easy A if you just go to class and do the readings at home (which take only about 10-15 min a day)
I really liked the way this class was structured. You take a clicker quiz every class, and the exams are composed of those questions only, so it's really easy to study for them. This class is an easy A and good for non science majors.
Every class you have a clicker quiz and at the end of the year 6 of those quizzes get dropped. There's a reading for each class that the quiz is based off. It is important to read, as the exams and quizzes come directly from the readings. She is also very helpful during her office hours and will work with you to explain questions missed on a test.
Every class has the clicker quizzes but if you do the learning objectives you should get pretty good grades on those, plus she drops the lowest 6. She puts all of the powerpoints online and the exams are mostly clicker quizzes and learning objectives. Just go to class and do learning objectives and you should have a pretty good grade.
I honestly dont know why people find Thompson so mean, she was one of the best professors ive ever had! Just dont mess around in her class. Also dont buy the book new, you dont need an access code and theyre $25 on amazon
She's very intense about plants.
Kim was a really great teacher, a lot of people do not like her because they do not do well in the class. Kim is an awesome professor and a great person. Take her class and show interest and you will see what I see.
Quizzes at the beginning and end of every class, attendance is technically not taken but you will get 0s for the quizzes
I absolutely loved taking my class with Dr. Thompson. Make sure you do the learning objectives and use those to study for the test and you'll be able to pass with ease! I can understand why people don't like her but she has the best intentions and really does love what she's doing. Would definitely recommend!!
This women is amazing! Ive never found her rude at all! It can be a little fustrating if you show up a bit late for the top hat quize (cliker alternative) she drops a quize a homework, and a few of the cliker quizzes. She dosent make you buy a 200$ book and post text for you to use. Over all top notch looking forward to having again!
not bad at all she is giving grades on an easy work
Definitely come to class as often as you can. Tophat quizzes are taken every day which eventually help you on the exams!! Also if you get a 93% or above in the class you don't have to take the final. You have to read every day but it's really not bad because they're all online articles. She gives out learning objectives that are on the exam.
All you have to do to do well in her class is study the learning objectives based on the readings she gives you for every class. They are usually either common sense or are found easily in the reading. The only downside was that Kim is EXTREMELY passionate about climate change. If you disagree with her beliefs, don't take this class.
I think she was very nice to me and my class, but I've heard she's not the nicest in others. You have to attend class for a good grade, top hat quizzes are in every class and sometimes 2 in one day. The lecture is a lot of material. The exams are over the learning objectives, so you must do those to understand. This class also came with LAB :(
Kim's class is really easy if you read and follow the learning objectives. Her lectures have nothing to do with the exams, so it is a chill class to go to. However, the TopHat quizzes at the beginning and end of each class add up fast, so try not to skip. She's goofy and lovable and REALLY likes plants.
kim was tough. a lot of her lectures turned political. some things we discussed were really irrelevant to the course itself. daily quizzes on material. find a study group you'll do better
Attendance is mandatory and make sure you stay on top of your learning objectives before each class. There are TopHat quizzes at the beginning and end of class each day so those count for points and also attendance. Learning Objectives and TopHats are very helpful when it comes to preparing for exams.
One of the rudest professors I've ever had. She constantly interrupts and degrades students & has ridiculous expectations for the way we answer questions. She doesn't let you say "I don't know" Quizzes at the beginning & end of every class about the readings. Absolutely would not recommend taking her classes unless it's your only option. Good luck
She's super passionate about the topic of PBIO, which is beneficial for anyone who takes her class. If you need help, she will help you as much as she possibly can. She's tough on her students because she cares. The daily quizzes are easy, and there is minimal work required to do well in the class. Would take again.
Tophat everyday helps with grades. Just go to class and do your work and youll be fine. She will help if you struggle too
She is very passionate about environmental science and if you are too, you will bond very nicely with her. She is a very sweet woman and educated woman. If you have her: never call her "Professor", call her DOCTOR Thompson. She worked hard for that name :)
I really liked Thompson as a professor. The lectures are boring and you need to go to class because she gives top hat quizzes everyday. If you do the learning objectives and study for the exams then you will be fine. The great thing is at the end of the semester if you have a 93% in her class you do not have to take the final.
Thompson was engaging and insightful at best but there were more than a few times that I couldn't understand her motivations. Her announcements at times were rambling paragraphs of criticisms over missing assignments, and she tore apart our three-assignment group project at the beginning of the semester over format issues in the citations.
I overall enjoyed class with Professor Thompson. She can be a little argumentative with students, and even rude at times, but she means well. The class gave me a lot of insight into women in science and was incredibly fascinating overall.
Thompson is an alright professor. She posts the power points on blackboard after class, however, she grades attendance through top hat quizzes. You need the book in order to succeed, however, she drops 4 quiz grades and the lowest exam grade. Her class is challenging if you aren't great at science, but if you just study a bit harder, you'll pass.
she is awful. very rude. this is the worse professor i have ever had and i would not recommend anyone to take this class. i went and had a meeting with her and she told me i was dumb and thinks i am not trying for anything when i am. she doesnt try to help you if you are failing because she does not care.
The class itself isn't too hard, the tests are easy it's simply over her 'Learning Objectives'. The problem with the class is Doctor Thompson, she is a very rude individual and although she is very passionate about science, she is not passionate about her students whatsoever.
Her socratic method of teaching is highly ineffective, with two individual quizzes a class, a group quiz, and TONS of "random calls" I leave class more confused than I was when I arrived. The class isn't difficult, but she definitely is. The powerpoints are impossible to follow, so you're better off taking notes outside of class.
This is a all lecture class. Nothing extraordinary about this Professor. She is not nice when kids cant answer her questions so be ready to read just in case she randomly calls on you. She drops a lot of your scores However, there is nothing special about PBIO and she made the class incredibly boring. Just do her readings & show up &you will pass.
She was strict and laid out exactly what she wanted from us. Class wasn't exactly enjoyable. Exams are straight from the "learning objectives" she gives to go with the readings. There's homework for every class, but you can get away with not doing it occasionally. I wish I had an opportunity to get to know her outside of class.
She's really rude to her students during class. She'll cut you off in the middle of sentences, she'll get in your face for the dumbest reasons, and she's not helpful if you email her with questions. This class gave me major anxiety- forced participation in a huge ass lecture hall or you lose all your points for the day, judges you for wrong answers
This class isn't hard, just time consuming. You have a reading for homework and have to answer questions about it, then have a Top Hat quiz. As long as you wrote down the learning objectives and answered them, class is easy. Prof can be rude sometimes, but just do your homework and go to class.
A lot of people complained about Kim, but honestly I didn't think she was that bad. She expects her students to be hard working and responsible. I always thought she was reasonable with her tests and grading. Do the reading, take notes, and show up to class to pass. I probably wouldn't take her again, but she wasn't that bad.
Dr. Thompson's personality rubbed a lot of people the wrong way but I respect her as a professor. Would I want to be her friend? No. Would I take another class from her? Probably not. But she's very clear about her expectations and I respect her for that. There's a lot of out-of-class reading but if you do that, it isn't hard to get a good grade.
If you're passionate about climate change and environmental justice, or interested in learning more about those topics, you will love this class. I learned so much from Dr. Thompson. If you can do readings twice a week with outlined learning objectives and listen and participate in class, it'll be the easiest A of your life.
Dr. Thompson is very passionate about Women in STEM, and it shows with this class. Everyone has to participate. But she makes is a fun, safe, welcoming environment.
I can tell Kim is really passionate about what she teaches and I appreciate that. But she is super by the book and pretty strict with grading. Its a heavy workload for an intro the biology class for non-science majors. She definitely makes you work hard for a decent grade.
Kim was a very rude and unprofessional professor. I struggled to learn anything in her class because of the amount of work that had to be done. This was more of a cram and try to pass class. Her class was super anxiety inducing because she will do random calls. If you can avoid her and her class, I definitely would.
Dr. Thompson is actually very cool, don't be discouraged from these reviews. If you go to class and do your work, it is extremely easy to pass. She is just very passionate about what she does and I think it comes off a bit tough. I learned so much from this class everyone should take it!
Kim Thompson is the worst professor I have had at Ohio University. The class is more about her political views than the actual course material and she is very rude to students and treats you like an idiot if you ask for any help. The class isn't hard it just gets annoying listening to her ranting about politics.
Dr. Thompson is awesome! I loved this discussion based class and I learned a ton.
Kim Thompson was not a good professor. Although she knows her content and is very passionate, she is very rude to her students and treats them like they're stupid in front of the entire lecture, including calling them stupid, if they cannot answer a question. It is a very anxiety-inducing class as she does random calls in a 240 person class.
Can come off as strict but only becasue it is a huge class. If you do the top hat quizzes, writing assignments and study for the tests a little you will be fine.
Every week she gives you learning objectives and readings and expects you to take notes on them and come to class prepared to take a quiz over the learning objectives at the beginning and end of every class. She does random calls in her classes and you are required to do group work the entire semester. Basically if you dont go youll fail.
Kim Thompson was the worst professor I had my first semester. You are expected to read and take notes on the readings the night before class. Her lectures go really fast and a lot of information is just thrown at you. You have a quiz at the beginning and end of every class and she calls on people randomly, if you dont know shell make you feel dumb
Kim covered a lot of unnecessary topics but made class interactive to where you were able to learn. The class was overall difficult but studying weekly made it easier. Random calls are daily and she calls out people for doing wrong. She was so rude and unapproachable without realizing, I would recommend this course with a different instructor.
Kim gets a bad rep, which is very apparent based on these reviews. While she IS strict with her grading and can come off as being rude, the class wasnt that hard to handle. In my opinion the readings and assignments each week were not difficult, just read, take notes, and this class will be a very easy A (plus you'll be prepared for random calls).
I really don't mind Kim. A lot of people don't like her because she's strict, but I feel like thats expected in college and if you can't handle it, you may be the issue. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
There are 2 tophat quizzes every class over the readings due that day. She gives learning objectives to let you know what will be on the quizzes. The class isn't that hard, she is a little strict but if you don't talk you'll be fine. Also, 6 of your top hat grade quizzes are dropped and one of your exams is dropped.
During the pandemic OU came up with a set of rules that prevent a failing grade from effecting your GPA through a no credit. She is refusing to give m the no credit and says i am keeping the F despite the new set of rules. This is absolutely unacceptable. Aviod her at all costs she was rude during class too.
Kim Thompson is THE worst educator I have ever encountered in my life. She made it very clear at the beginning of the semester that she would be in no way understanding of any situation. That was before everything went online due to COVID-19. Even then she doubled the amount of work and was even less understanding. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
At the beginning of fall semester she told our class that she was not going to be understanding or reply to emails about the online course. I have had 2 assignments not show up online and I tried to email her about it but she was rude back. We also had a quiz over our lecture from the day before and she did not show up to my groups meeting...
Kim Thompson is by far the worst prof I have ever had. She is the most unaccommodating person when it comes to online school saying "technical problems are not my issue" like its our issue too ?? Refuses to take responsibility for error on her part. Will not provide any help no matter what. Only focused on herself and her political views.
Prof Thompson has been the worst of my freshman year. She is rude when you try to talk to her outside of class, as if she doesnt want to teach the students that she is being paid to teach. It is sad to know that I must pay almost $20,000 a year to pay for services from a mediocre & rude professor.
This class was not for me, but I did learn a lot. Unlike what others said, I didn't think she was rude, and in our class she was very appreciative of questions. She isn't the friendliest professor I've had, but she definitely knows her stuff. She cares a lot about the environment and sustainability and it shows. The class was pretty tough though.
Dr. Thompson is the worst professor I have had. She makes you feel stupid when you ask questions and is not accomadating WHATSOEVER. She told our class that its not her fault for technical issues. It's her way or no way. If you don't have to take her classes, DON'T. This woman needs to learn to respect her students. Hurt people hurt people.
The class SHOULD have been easy(the material isn't overly complicated), but I did poorly. After a few emails from Prof Thompson, I was too afraid to ask questions pertaining to the material. She's passive aggressive, has no respect for students, and feedback on essays is non existent.
Dr. Thompson is a wonderful instructor. Dr. Thompson's assignment instructions are very clear, there are readings for every session, and if you take the time to answer the learning objectives thoroughly the quizzes afterward are easy. She may have a strong attitude at times, but her class is self-explanatory and easy if you do your work and study.
The class should be easy, and the content is interesting and valuable for our environment in the future. But Dr. Thompson came off as passive-aggressive, so I never really asked many questions and not much feedback for assignments or quizzes.
At the beginning of the semester I was thrown off by how many tests there were as EVERY Tuesday and Thursday seems to be a little much, however, I got used to It and as long as you keep on top of the readings you'll be fine. However, she was unapproachable and when I had questions I would always get attitude back. This made me sad and class harder.
This class was entirely online, so I missed out on interaction with Dr. Thompson. However, her grading criteria and requirements were always very clear. As long as you do the readings and read her presentations, it shouldn't be too bad.
Extremely inconsiderate of everyone and their circumstances
VERY VERY VERY RUDE. MY CLASSMATE IS IN THE MILITARY AND SHE WOULD NOT LET HIM TAKE A MIDTERM AT ANOTHER TIME EVEN THOUGH HE LITERALLY COULD NOT DO IT AT THAT TIME. ANOTHER CLASSMATES BABY WAS IN THE HOSPITAL AND ASKED FOR A 24 EXTENSION AND WAS DENIED BECAUSE SHE "WOULD HAVE TO GIVE HER OTHER 150 STUDENTS ONE." NOT A GOOD PERSON.
I've taken both her PBIO 1000 and PBIO 1030 classes and I can see where people come from as sometimes she can give off passive aggressive vibes. She does stick to her guidelines and is somewhat strict, but the class itself is not bad. There are quizlets that cover every quiz and exam online and she is a fair grader. She also drops your lowest exam.
Dr. Thompson is very rude to her students and acts as if she is better than them. There are no exceptions for any work and will not give any leniency for ANY situation. Her class is optional but does not help. Lots of homework, readings, and exams are very confusing.
Kim Thompson is extremely intimidating, rude, and unapproachable. Although her content is not hard, I had to maneuver by myself because she did not take questions. Even worse, she is not understanding AT ALL when it comes to exceptions, sickness, or emergencies. It is very hard to connect with a teacher who does not care about your success.
The course was pretty easy, in my opinion. If you do the work you'll get an A. It can be a lot of work sometimes but it's a college science course. She didn't really teach, but most professors haven't during the pandemic. She was very accommodating and understanding when my grandmother passed away. The online interactive lab was pretty cool.
Would not give makeups for tests even when it wasnt my fault. Computer broke and she said it wasnt her problem. Dropped from a B to a D. She said no excuses like even if a family member died. Hate her.
Thompson is passionate about the content of this class. The PowerPoints are filled with information and she knows what she's talking about in our online class. However, she takes little to no time in assisting students who are wanting assistance with the content or deadlines. I understand this is a stated rule, but she is absolutely ruthless.
Lectures not mandatory. If you read the textbook and complete assignments, you will be fine. Most assignments are not necessarily hard, but do take time. Make sure to follow rubrics to a T, or points will be marked off. She is very passionate about subject. Drops lowest test, and tests were all multiple choice.
let me start by saying yes its an online class and shouldn't need much from the professor but when I have a mini quiz due before each class with a time frame of 8pm - 9am ( class starts at 9:10) that is ridiculous. One other thing I emailed asking where I can find the final exam and she said "It's Dr. Thompson" and never told me where it was
I emailed her about where I could find the final exam on blackboard and used her first name because most of my professors go by their first name. Well she emailed me back saying Ït's Dr. Thompson"and nothing about how I could find the final. This is unacceptable. Even if I caught her on a bad day this a students life and grade the will stay
Dr. Thompson is not at all a caring professor. Under no circumstances does she allow you to make up quizzes or exams, regardless of what your excuse is. While the content is interesting, as well as the fact that she drops your lowest exam and four lowest quizzes, her class is very time-consuming. I would recommend finding a different professor.
do not take science with her, she is not a good professor, does not let any excuses slide even if you're in the hospital you will still not be able to make up quiz/exams. she does drop the lowest exam and I believe some quizzes but it is still annoying she wont use any major health excuses.
The lecture is very long and repetitive, however not mandatory you do not have to attend to pass this class. The online labs and homework assignments were very easy and didn't take much time at all.
The class itself and the content is fine. Exams are based on quizzes so just review your notes and you should be fine. Prof. Thompson is pretty harsh but as long as you keep up with the work you should be fine. Not the best person ever but a passable class
This is not a professor who will help you if you're struggling. She does not care and she does not want to care. She will yell at students to set an example. Unfortunately, she's incredibly knowledgeable in her field and the class itself is great.
I skipped lectures and I still passed-ish.
blames students for technical difficulties, makes homework due at 9 am or 9 pm. expects too much prior knowledge for an intro course. drops grade a letter if you miss 2 lectures. does not allow lectures to be recorded making it difficult to keep up with notes. overall not a nice person, doesn't care about her students in the slightest.
Intro course and she acts like we should be biologists, gives no lean way, and is incredibly inconsiderate. Is very knowledgeable.
Quizzed on material before it is taught to you.
I took Dr. Thompsons Women in Science class. It is really sad because this class could be so incredible and it teaches a wonderful lesson, but how can someone teach a class about equity and not practice it? Her essay grading is ridiculous and she will mark off points for things not listed in instructions. It's not worth it in my opinion.
This professor is just awful. She does not care if you have any medical excuse. You miss 2 labs and you drop a whole letter grade, if you miss 3 labs you fail the class. The homework is all reading with multiple choice answers and her labs are online. Lectures are extremely boring and long. I learned nothing and hated this class. She does not care.
I really enjoyed taking this class. It's really discussion-based so you need to do the readings before class. She knows exactly how she wants essays and homework done and is upfront about it but it can come off as if she's being demanding. Overall if you follow the syllabus and rubrics closely you'll do good in the class.
She is not very friendly and has very high expectations. She doesn't answer any questions and is not understanding of missing anything even in extreme circumstances. However, she is upfront about her expectations so if you do the work on time, you'll do fine.
She rude
This class sucks that's about it good luck.
She is an intelligent person but an awful teacher, she focuses more on guarding against cheating than she does actually teaching the class. She is quite condescending as well as selfish with her teaching style
Haven't finished the class yet so ignore the final grade...Do not take Dr. Thompson's class if you are not prepared to read long articles and take quizzes twice weekly, about new material before the class even happens. Not understanding of any personal issues; if you miss an exam due to being injured/funeral/WHATEVER it is she will not do make-ups.
Her lectures weren't bad in my opinion but her attitude toward students made the class a challenge. She isn't understanding or open-minded in any aspect. If you never miss a class, turn every assignment in on time, and never have tech issues you'll most likely do well in her class.
decent
There are two weekly tests before lectures with accompanying quizzes. As long as you read the article, the quizzes aren't hard. She often integrates current global events with her topics. She gets a bad rep because she doesn't mess around when it comes to exams or lectures, but she is very knowledgable and keeps it interesting.
This professor has made me upset in many ways. After every test I cried because of my grades I would get. I would study everything she mentioned and still would do poorly. This class/professor has ruined my mental health. Also she clicked me out of class one day for NOT wearing a mask when I forgot one and live all the way across campus.
I know she gets a lot of hate, but it is really not thattt bad of a class. You have to read a lot and take weekly quizzes, but all the answers are available on quizlet. I like that she provides learning objectives to help you study for the exams. She is very strict about attendance and does not care if you have any excuses.
Avoid at all cost. Put entire academic career on hold and take it with another professor. Thank you for nothing
really mean
Kim Thompson was by far the WORST professor I have had so far in my time here at OU. First of all you cannot miss class, even if you have covid she does NOT care at all. One thing that is funny about her is she will not let you one up her, if you try to correct her you will be screamed at. Do not take a class with Kim Thompson.
DON'T take this class, she is not understanding, and is very passive aggressive. Her test schedule is very difficult. The worst class I've taken. The class itself is not hard, but how she teaches it makes it so hard. The powerpoint talk about random things that honestly make no sense. Don't take any class with PBIO1000 with Kim Thompson .
avoid her class at all costs for your own sake. she doesn't care about her students wellbeing only herself. her classes only hurt your gpa.
While I don't agree with some of her policies, like her exam policy, I don't think Dr. Thompson deserves a bad rep. I had a family emergency during the semester and had to miss a class, sent her a respectful email explaining and she excused it in a very kind manner. Just be respectful and don't completely blow off the class and you will be fine.
Kim Thompson does not care whether you live or die, figuratively. The class is not impossible to do well in, but you need to go to class every day to get attendance points and in class quizzes. She's just an unbearable human being with a mega ego. She teaches fine, but she's so nightmarishly strict that it's horrible to sit in her lecture hall.
People are too tough on Kimmy T, she may assign a lot of homework, but as long as you pay some attention and do the readings her class isn't too bad. Her humor may be dry, but she unintentionally says some very out of pocket things that are hard to not laugh at. Her class sizes tend to be massive, so it is hard to get much 1 on 1 time.
I personally do not believe this professor is a good instructor nor does she try to connect with the classroom. I strongly advise finding another professor for this course.
Tests are easy because the material is very repetitive. Honestly not as bad as I thought once I gave her a chance. Her attitude is sometimes a little much, she demonstrates her authority quite often. It reminds me of high school. I have laughed in her class, her humor is dry but so is mine. I think she just doesn't know how to connect w/ this gen.
People are being dramatic about Kim Thompson. Yes, she wants things to go the way she wants and doesn't like being interrupted. You just have to show up, do the quizzes study for the exams and you will do fine. Just listen to her, it will be hard if you are not interested in plants and global biology but its only a semester.
While the material wasn't really that difficult to grasp, I still strongly disliked this class. Do the readings and quizzes before the start of each class and you'll be fine. Exam questions mostly consist of previous quiz questions or material discussed in class. Try not to miss exams as Dr. Thompson doesn't let you make them up, no matter what.
I had her for plants and people because it was a required class. The lectures were usually boring, but the information we learned was cool. Attendance is important and make sure you were counted for it because regardless of if you showed she will not mark you as present if there was a malfunction.
c*nt bag
such a not good professor
Shes horrible. Shes so rude and doesn't care about her students at all. She has the biggest ego I've ever seen, believes she is always right, and is beyond rude. Don't take her class!!!
Dr. Thompson makes it very clear what you need to do to get a good grade in her class with her learning objectives that list exactly what will be on the exam. Do the readings and quizzes before the lecture and you will be alright. People rate her poorly because they say she is rude but she just wants respect from her large lectures.
I performed well in this class because I studied extreme amounts for the exams. For an entry bio class, it's way too hard. Its my only 1000 level course this semester, out of six classes I'm taking, and its the hardest one. She's very old school, no leeway with her. If you don't absolutely need this class, don't take it. Also she's kind of rude.
Honestly, the prof is fine. The classes are long, interesting lectures, and this prof is very passionate about teaching. The labs are pointless and extremely strict. Attendance is mandatory and no excuse matters besides university-allowed excuses. Participate, study for the exams well ahead of time, attend class and labs, and you'll do fine.
Very shocked by all the bad reviews. The class is very organized and the workload is not bad at all, just a top hat assignment per class. If you understand the learning outcomes you will be completely fine on the tests. Attendance matters and don't miss lab EVER! Loved the layout of the class and she understands this is an entry-level course.
Kim Thompson is a passionate but strict professor. The quizzes and tests are directly from the readings, take that as you will. If you read the assigned readings, you will be just fine. Attendance is mandatory and graded, but it is not a make or break on your grade.
I took Kim's PBIO1000 class in 2022 & she isn't that bad. Class itself is easy intro level environmental science topics. Do the readings for quizzes before class & you're good. Large lecture & did go at it with students, but some were disrespectful/deserved it tho. Out of pocket, lacks empathy and strict with her policies but class itself is fine
I almost didn't take her class because of the horrible ratings on here, but I'm glad I did. She was flexible, available, and kind. She also made content available so we didn't have to buy a textbook, and most of it was pretty interesting.
If you put in effort you will pass the class. Dr. Thompson comes off as a strict professor, but she just wants people to put effort in. She's actually pretty easy going and funny.
Cries in class because of biodiversity loss. Gives long readings. She lectures the whole time and talks about politics. This is a plant class. She began talking about reproductive rights and how if you are not a scientist you need to keep your mouth shut. She said she would break the law to share one side of climate change. Don't take this class!
Dr. Thompson has clearly given up. She teaches an intro level course like it's grad school, and not only are her lectures extremely boring and not helpful but cover the same material you're supposed to read before class, and attendance is mandatory. Her slides don't follow her learning objectives and she has gone on political tangents during class.
Dr. Thompson is clearly a professor very well versed in her field, yet with this knowledge uses it as an excuse to be extremely condescending, generally ruthless in regards for ANY consideration to people outside of the specific university mandated rules she is required to follow. She is broad-day disrespectful to her students.
This is probably one of the worst professors I've ever had at OU and I've been taking classes here since a sophomore in high school. She is completely unprofessional, kicked me out of class one time and took away y attendance do to me sitting in the back of the room, giving me no time to explain even though it was to charge my MacBook.
I adore Dr. Thompson. She has to deal with a lot of disrespectful and disinterested students. She is very well educated and passionate about plant bio. She doesn't tolerate people being rude to her or disregarding the rules she makes very clear and are very easy to follow.
Do not take this course as an easy science class, it's not. The professor degrades people in class and I am concerned to why she still teaches here when so many students hate her, she is not nice at all. 80% of your grade in this class (Plants and People) is from tests where everyone averages from a 50-80% at best. Don't take this class.
This class is hard to succeed in if you do bad on one exam. There are a BUNCH of quizzes and they barley count towards your grade. She is very passive aggressive and is not nice. She does not care about you what so ever.
Don't take unless you like reading articles and taking quizzes every week. But you actually have to read to find the answers.
Dr. Thompson is clearly very passionate about her field, but she lacks empathy and is way too strict for a general education course. You essentially teach yourself the content as you have to complete a long reading and a quiz before each class, and she just goes over the same information. The class is manageable, but annoying.
Generally a tough professor but keeping up on readings and quizzes makes it bearable. There is just an overall lack of consideration for anything other than her own convenience. Don't talk during class, keep up on readings, and don't bring up passenger pigeons and you'll be fine
I dont recommend this class at all unless you are good at science and get on her good side at the front of the class.
Dr Thompson very clearly knows a lot about the topics she discusses but goes about it in the worst way. Lectures are unnecessary since the readings provide all info. She lacks empathy altogether though. She thinks everyone is the worst person alive and only cares about her convenience. Everything is fake and she will never take a student's word
She was a good teacher, but very test heavy. I had 4 exams before the final. She does require attendance and if you do not go to class I felt like I didn't know anything. Lab was the hard part with the project required. Overall, just study and do all of the assignments well to help your grade. Study and make flashcards for the exams they help.
This professor was the worst I've had hear at Ohio University. She would go over Powerpoints that wouldn't even be on the test. She was a tough grader by if you missed something in her class you couldn't make it up. Also, wasn't very forgiving and doesn't answer her emails.
This class is definitely doable, but you have to keep up with anything asked of you. Readings and quizzes before each class, where you will then have a lecture about what you read. The content is not too difficult, just a lot of it. Dr. Thompson expects respect and an effective learning environment; if you just sit and learn, you'll do fine.
She literally stops class if someone is talking over her and she does not let people make up exams regardless of the excuse. She goes way too fast during lectures which makes it hard to understand what she is saying and write key information down. Overall, I do not recommend this class to anyone and avoid her at all costs.
Course is fairly easy but can be difficult to keep up with. Attendance is mandatory and important to your grade. Lectures are drawn out and boring but the course content is easy to learn as long as you can sit down and teach it to yourself.
Dr. Thompson was my favorite professor in my first semester. Her class is super easy if you follow the lesson objectives and do the required readings before class. There's a lot of groupwork in class but it is usually pretty easy. Exams are very easy if you review the TopHat, IFAT, and in-class questions, and there is always extra credit.
Prof Thomas is a decent professor who has a genuine interest in the subject she is teaching. Go to class as she does take attendance with tophat and asks questions using tophat that are graded.
The material itself was easy as long as you were prepared to put in slight work. The exams are fully just like the practice quizzes you have every week The only issue was the attitude displayed. Brings her political views up any chance she can and is patronizing to those who do not agree. If you want climb into your skin this is the class for you
This teacher was not enjoyable to have. Her lectures were less in depth than the readings and did not add any new material, but attendance was mandatory. The whole class felt very surface level to the point of being incredibly boring. She spent a lot of class time taking attendance and continually reminding students to put their phones away.
Dr. Thompson is very passionate about her topic of interest and she is thorough and clear. She does random calls in class where she pulls out a random generator to pick someone so if you have anxiety I would not recommend taking this course. Go over quiz questions, do the out-of-class notes and quizzes and you'll do well in this course!!
Lectures are all over the place and super hard to follow. This was a basic course for non-science majors but it was not taught that way. She is super unclear with instructions, her slides are extremely hard to follow and understand. She is THE worst.
Her powerpoints are not available until after the class and they are not in-depth at all speeds thru notes during class, which makes it impossible to write everything down. The quizzes that you take after EVERY class only give you 10 minutes to complete, which gives you a minute per question. You cannot miss an exam for any reason or else its a 0.
I loved this class and this teacher. Her directions were very straight forward, and she is very passionate about her work.
The worst when it comes to exams. Not personable at all and very rude.
Whoever said she was a c*nt bag is correct. Thinks she's better than you and has no exceptions. She will call you out and make an example out of you during class. You need to study! She says you only need 75% attendance but I suggest going if you want to learn. Grade is 80% exams. Changes content semesterly so good luck finding quizlets
shes a tweaker
Terrible professor. Wasnt very good at explaining things. The tests are accumulative. Very mean and rude. Harsh grader
Actual tweaker will stop the lecture to yell at you if she catches you talking
Despite her awful ratings on here, Dr. Thompson is a great professor in my experience. She's very outgoing, and her slides are very straightforward with recent information that she found herself. The papers that she had us write had very clear instructions and she gave great feedback on how to improve for future papers. Great prof :)
Prof Thompson has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it can pay off. Attendance is mandatory, so go to class. Use Unstuck study, ChatGPT, and the textbook to study effectively.
So unnecessarily rude and likes to single out students who she feels arent passionate enough about the subject and embarrass them.
Dr. Thompson is very passionate about her work which I think is great. However, it is insane that she expects everyone else to be just as passionate. If you dare seem unengaged she will make you an example in front of the entire 200 person lecture. Students are required to take quizzes over content that has not even been taught in class.
Absolutely the most disrespectful professor. She has torn me apart completely in front of the class. She yells at me constantly when I am not the only one doing what she claims that I am doing wrong. Horrible horrible horrible person who doesn't care for you as a person. Denied my friend's IEP, no exam retakes, absolutely no accomodations.
A lot of people are scared of Dr. Thompson because she can sometimes single out people who are talking during lectures, but if you just don't talk and answer some questions she won't yell at you. She's not like the that drumming monkey from Toy Story. Also, there is quite a lot of reading, so just take a Ritalin and get on your way,
This professor is giving us an exam on Election DayThis professor will yell at you in class if she thinks your talking laughing or doing anything. This professor has cumulative exams for a GEN-ED class. This professor does not provide study guides or homework. This professor will give you two quizzes a week over material not yet covered in class.
I adore Dr. Thompson. She is incredibly passionate about her area of study, and her lectures reflect that. She will not hesitate to call out students if they are interrupting the class. This may sound intimidating, but she genuinely just wants everyone to hear and respect her lectures. I am not a science person, yet she made me interested.
Strict. Annoying. Tests before class everyday. Jus stay away.
First day of class addressed the students with rude and unreasonably strict rules. Treated students more like unruly middle schoolers than adult university students. Immediately dropped class, very glad I did. Entire learning community constantly tells horror stories of irrationality, impossible test material, and overall unpleasantry.
PBIO 1030 bad reviews are out of touch. It's not a difficult class, you just have to do the readings and learn the provided learning objectives. They are exactly what you need to know for exams, just study them. She drops your lowest exam, so it's fine that there's no make up exams. Just go take your exams! I think she's knowledgeable and funny.
She is not personable, reasonable, a good planner, respectful, out of touch with reality, an arrogant know-it-all, and severely unhelpful. Yes, I may have a B but guess what! We have an exam tomorrow and our final next week and exams are worth eighty-percent of the class. Good reviews and high grades only exist for students having prior knowledge
Professor Thompson is VERY passionate about the subject she is teaching. But she doesn't realize that 90% of the class is taking this class a gen ed. Four exams are worth 80% of the grade. Quizzes before each class. If you study the learning objectives, you will pass the class easily, but there are A LOT. Also, lots of politics...
She was very mean, created a hostile and uncomfortable environment for everyone. She really liked to call people out during lectures, if you looked like you were talking or not paying attention she will call you out for it. She is very uptight, once made us all close our computers during lecture because they were “distracting”. I do not reco
I will admit she was not my favorite, but the class content is so easy. She likes to make the coursework seem more complicated. She likes to randomly call on people, but she warns you ahead of time. She also drops your lowest exam grade, and you have the opportunity to score high enough (94%) and not take the final. Top hat attendance also.
I honestly loved the class. Dr. Thompson goes over everything in her lectures and her reviews for exams are extremely spot-on and helpful. I will say, do not expect a lot of leniency. She's an amazing professor but she seems to get frustrated easily so if you're quiet and stay off your phone you'll do great in her class.
One of the worst experiences I've ever had. I know she reads these reviews because she's said it briefly in one of her classes, and it baffles me how she's not able to change in any way after reading these. Everything that these students are saying are 100% true, and instead of changing, Dr. Thompson doubles down and doesn't change at all.
Never take a class with her. Doesn't excuse university absences (which is illegal by the way) so if you get sick and miss an exam, you will never be able to be exempt from the final and will have an F for a while because u get a 0. You can't talk in class or be on your phone and she has quizzes before the lecture. SAVE YOURSELF SHES INSANE.
If you're trying to take this class as a gen ed I literally pray for you. I will only say one other because other comments covered most of what the class is like: you have to schedule office time with her just to see what you got on the exams. Just for feedback, or to see what you missed. Crazy.
Extremely full of herself and takes offense to things very easily which will affect class. Don't think of leaving early she will make sure you stay until the end even if its doing nothing. Her slides are repetitive and boring due to her forcing an absurd amount of reading and quizzes on you due noon before each class. Super easy subject.
You cannot so much as whisper for 5 seconds without her stopping her 250 people lecture class, to single you out by silently staring at you until you make eye contact with her. This was in the name of "preventing distractions to get the most out of your educational dollar." But all it did was constantly stop class for a whisper no one could hear.
The learning objectives are extremely helpful and they WILL prepare you for the exam. She is great at teaching. She just doesn't put up with any disrespect (talking in class while she's talking etc) but she sets you up to succeed if you pay attention and do learning objectives.
Though this is a gen ed course, the topics discussed are definitely applicable in many areas of work. The weekly reading material is easily understandable and quizzes and exams are easy; especially if you study the learning objectives. Worst exam gets dropped as well as 2 worst quiz grades. If you get an A, you don't have to take the final.
Borderline disrespectful to students and for a gen-ed class it is way more intense than needed. Exams are almost every 2 weeks and gives us barely anything to study on. Calls out students for nothing and makes it a very unsettling environment. DO NOT recommend.
quite literally destroyed my freshman year, my gpa is still not fully recovered bc she ruined it that bad and im lowkey a smart person so that kinda sucks but whatevs. she would call on you in front of 200 people and if you didnt know the answer then it could affect you negatively. so yeah if ur gna be a freshman this fall, pls save urself. 0/10
This was an amazing class with an incredible professor. This class addressed real world issues and injustices that women face in STEM field. Dr. Thompson showed passion and intellect on the subject with clear proof, statistics and research done.
I liked this class a lot. Dr. Thompson is passionate, well rounded and knowing of the course. She was serious about the course, and subject manner of the class. I would 100% take another class of hers and I really don't understand why she has so many ill ratings. If you listen, apply yourself in her classes, you will do well.
Lowk class is easy she just is so mean and disrespectful in my opinion. lots of outside work I don't really understand why we read before class and take quiz when she just goes over EVERYTHING I just read?? like easy info to learn but like only if ur willing to endure her lectures and cold calls
Dr. Thompson likes to call on students to answer questions they have discussed with their semester assigned groups. If you do not know the answer she will be very disrespectful in an attempt to embarrass you in front of the whole class. There's more to it, but overall a very unpleasant professor but nonetheless one you will learn from.
Honestly an easy class. If you pay attention in lectures or just have ur phone behind ur computer screen she won't care. She does make everyone take their headphones off at the b beginning of every class, but if you just want a pretty chill and easy class for credit this is a good one. FYI, she is very political (democrat), but it's not unbearable.
20 page readings are assigned just for the quizzes to be 5 questions over only the first two pages. Extreme waste of time
The concepts learned in class are easy, but Dr. Thompson can be a little much at times. I've not yet had a personal issue with her, but she does cold-call pretty much every lecture and goes on unnecessary rants about her political views (liberal) in every lecture. A lot of homework too. Easy but a lot.
She won't stop talking about her political views
Dr. Thompson is very passionate about what she teaches and therefore responds negatively to disrespect in her classroom. She can be unfair at times, but by no means is she a bad professor. This class is not hard and exams are very straightforward if you pay attention and take notes. All you have to do is respect her and she'll respect you.
Very political and always goes off topic on what she is supposed to be teaching to complain about trump.
She is very passionate about this topic, however she is probably one of the worst professors I have ever had the misfortune of having. Not only was the information and confusing, but her style of "teaching" is just throwing a lot of information at you She's rude, mocks students, and will stop class over the stupidest of reasons. 0/10 Professor!
She will assign a quiz for everyday which gets quite annoying, the quizzes are just a time waster as you take them (basically open note) before class. The topics over the quizzes are discussed during class which is such a time waster... Also get expected to hear at least 1 political thing at least once a day.
You think you're taking a science class? No way you're taking Thompson's Political Science Class. Anyone who thinks she a good professor only like her because they're within her major, but since 80% of her students aren't a science major there's an issue. She acts as if everyone here is a science major and WANTS to be here. Pro Tip: Not the case.
I'm not sure what complaining about the Trump administration, bringing up women's rights, and asking students about how certain people should be respected has to do with plants. She says that if you disagree with her that she wants to argue. If you are a conservative, you need to stay away from her. The left-wing politics are way out of hand!
DO NOT TAKE. This is not a plants and people class, be prepared to hear about her bizarre political opinions, and she will scream and yell if you disagree, also isn't afraid to call you out and humiliate you in front of the entire class. The school needs to do something about her immediately.
She is very opinionated, though I do understand why. This class is about the environment and by extension climate change so she brings up the current administration a lot (pretty obvious why). Overall, she's just very strict and makes sure you pay attention. I put in the bare minimum and am enjoying the class. She's not THAT bad :,)
My experience with Dr. Thompson has been awful. I dread going to her class every day.I do not like her teaching method. She often goes on political rants, which is fine, but if you slightly disagree with her, your opinion doesn't matter. She openly criticizes students and accuses students of using GPT which is not the case. DON'T TAKE SAVE YOURSELF
Dr. Thompson is a very passionate professor. I see why people are intimidated/not enjoy her class because of the heavy political disscussion but environmental science is a very political subject so it makes sense. Yes she can get a little off topic but if you read and take notes on her learning objectives you should be fine. The class is not bad.
Her lectures are disorganized and hard to follow, and she seems more interested in showing off her knowledge than actually helping students learn. Grading is inconsistent, and she's quick to criticize in front of the class. Honestly, it felt stressful just trying to survive the course rather than actually learning anything
Her lectures are all over the place, and it's hard to follow what she actually wants. Grading is inconsistent, participation feels like a trap, and she's quick to call out mistakes publicly. You spend more time stressed and confused than actually learning anything in her class.
She clearly knows her stuff, but teaching is a disaster. Lectures jump around, grading feels random, and she calls out students in front of the class. You leave every session frustrated, confused, and questioning why you signed up
Disorganized, harsh, and unapproachable. Lectures are hard to follow, mistakes are public, and grades seem unfair. You walk out every class stressed, confused, and doubting yourself more than learning
Taking her class felt like running a gauntlet. Questions get shut down, participation is stressful, and her grading makes no sense. You spend more time anxious than learning anything useful.
Some people rave about her, but honestly, I didn't get the same experience. Lectures jump around, grading feels unpredictable, and participation can be stressful. She knows her subject, but teaching it clearly is a struggle, and I often left class more confused than informed.
Taking her class feels like signing up for stress. Lectures are disorganized, grading is unpredictable, and she seems to enjoy calling out mistakes in front of everyone. You leave more frustrated and anxious than actually learning anything. Avoid if you value your sanity.
Honestly, she's difficult to work with. Lectures are chaotic, grading is unpredictable, and she publicly shames students. Some might like her subject knowledge, but her attitude makes the class stressful and unenjoyable.
I genuinely feel worse about who I am at the end of each of her lectures. I do not understand what's her problem with belittling students. She doesn't even teach the class! We the students read from a textbook and take a quiz BEFORE the class even begins, and all she does in review with 70% filler to make it seem like she's doing something.
Dr. Thompson doesn't put up with BS. You will not be able to skate by easily with her. However, her approach helps you actually learn the material. If you show up, pay attention, and do the homework, you'll be fine. PBIO1000 is a gen-ed, so many people are surprised when there's actually homework to do... The course is somewhat information heavy.
To the review below mine: That's a one way to spin it, but her ‘no BS' attitude often comes across as rude and dismissive. The workload isn't the issue, but it's the lack of clear direction and the disorganized lectures. Showing up and doing the homework doesn't help much when the teaching itself is confusing. P.S Students have to teach themselves
the class was Slow and confusing. Homework often unclear. Expectations weren't well explained. Support was limited, and Assignments felt excessive. Navigating lectures was tough. Attempts to get help were tricky. Some feedback vague. Syllabus unclear. Hard to stay motivated. Overall, Learning felt stressful. Everything overwhelming. (Look at Caps)
Genuinely a Horrible Person. Anyone who supports her are actually insane in the fact that she lacks basic human compassion. Her supporters are her little "student pets" who will often glass her. I would be wary of Any 5-Star reviews because of this.
Welcome to Kim's complaining about the Trump Administration class. Instead of bringing up relevant political issues, she just chooses to complain about Republicans, which has nothing to do with the class. She's also just very rude and calls out students if they don't know the answer or get the answer wrong. She acts like a middle school teacher.
She cold calls and its so annoying
Grumpy old lady who yaps and complains about nothing important all class. Consistently snarky and will stop a 120 person lecture for 5 minutes to single out 2 people talking. Class is all about saving our planet and conserving our environment but she still makes us use a scantron for taking exams. 0/10 would never take this class again.
I stopped going to class after the second week because she kept sharing her political opinions and talking about how white males are the worst thing to ever exist. However I still have a 95 in the class just from studying quizlets before exams. I think the fact she's still teaching shows a lot about the univeristy.
So gross looking. Constantly spits all over you while yelling about how horrible trump is, 85% of the class is her political opinions with very little class material ever being covered.
Horrible “lady” all around. I really hope she doesn't have any kids or grandkids because those poor people if so. Makes nasty comments directed at white males or Donald trump almost every class. Will constantly single out and embarrass people for whispering and tells them what a distraction they are, when she's the only real distraction.
Dr. Thompson is a very difficult professor to deal with. I never enjoy her classes considering she only talks about her trips to Nicaragua. She constantly insults people for discussing the material during her class, saying they are distracting her. Brings up her political opinion any chance she gets.
It's very aggravating that she makes attendance mandatory (especially the day before Thanksgiving break), just to discuss her political beliefs the entire time.
She makes the class a lot harder than it needs to be. She spends most of the class discussing her political opinions and challenging anyone who has different views than her. When the test rolls around, a lot of the material has never been seen before because she wastes class time being political.
he lectures went on forever without actually helping me understand anything. Every assignment felt like a guessing game because the expectations were never clear. I tried asking questions but the answers never made things any easier. By the end I was frustrated and burned out. Definitely would not sign up for this again.
This class was rough. The lectures dragged, the instructions were never clear, and I spent most of the semester confused no matter how hard I tried. Felt like the work never matched what we were taught. I walked out more frustrated than anything. Would not take again.
Constantly felt lost in this class. Lectures were long and unhelpful, and the grading felt all over the place. No matter how much effort I put in, nothing clicked. Easily one of the most frustrating classes I've taken. Wouldn't repeat it.
This class drained me. The lectures felt pointless, the expectations changed constantly, and nothing was explained in a way that actually helped. I tried to keep up but it always felt like guesswork. Easily one of the most stressful classes I've taken.
Never felt grounded in this class. The lectures wandered, the workload felt random, and the feedback never actually helped me improve. Spent most of the semester confused and annoyed. Definitely not a class I'd take again.
Class feels like a lecture marathon with zero engagement. Tests are brutal, grading is harsh, and participation barely helps. Feels like she's more interested in her own opinions than actually teaching. Not recommended if you want to learn without stress.
Terrible experience. Class moves slowly, assignments are overwhelming, and she constantly goes off-topic. Feels like she grades on mood, not effort. Definitely not worth taking if you care about learning or your GPA.
Hard to follow lectures, tests are unfair, and participation doesn't help much. She focuses more on her own stories than teaching. If you value clarity and fairness, this isn't the class for you.
Lectures drag on with little explanation, tests are unnecessarily hard, and grading feels random. She cares more about lecturing than helping students succeed. Definitely frustrating and not worth your time.
This class is a nightmare. Lectures are long, disorganized, and full of tangents that have nothing to do with the material. Tests are confusing and way too hard, and participation barely makes a difference. If you want a class that actually teaches, look elsewhere.
Taking this class feels like a waste of time. The lectures are boring and off-topic, assignments are overwhelming, and tests are unfairly difficult. Participation barely helps, and it seems like the professor cares more about her own opinions than helping students learn.
Absolutely frustrating class. Lectures are slow and full of unrelated stories, making it hard to focus. Tests are tricky, grading feels inconsistent, and participation doesn't help much. If you want a fair, clear, and engaging class, avoid this one.
Really tough class. Lectures are long and confusing, exams feel unfair, and grading seems unpredictable. Participation barely helps, and the professor spends more time on personal stories than teaching. Definitely not a class I'd recommend to anyone.
Honestly, this class is frustrating and exhausting. Lectures are long, confusing, and full of off-topic stories. Exams are overly difficult, grading feels inconsistent, and participation barely makes a difference. Definitely not a class for someone who wants clarity or fairness.
This class is a struggle from start to finish. Lectures are disorganized and filled with tangents, assignments feel excessive, and exams are way harder than necessary. The professor seems more focused on her own ideas than actually helping students learn.
This class is a total headache. Lectures drag on and go off-topic constantly, assignments are overwhelming, and tests feel unfair. Participation barely helps, and the professor seems more focused on her own stories than teaching. Definitely not worth your time.
Terrible class experience. Lectures are long, disorganized, and full of irrelevant tangents. Exams are confusing and grading feels unpredictable. Participation barely matters, and it seems the professor cares more about her own opinions than actually teaching.
This class is exhausting and frustrating. Lectures are slow, confusing, and filled with off-topic stories. Tests are overly difficult, grading seems inconsistent, and participation hardly helps. If you want a clear, fair, and engaging class, avoid this one.
I left this class feeling completely drained and stressed. Lectures felt endless, full of off-topic stories, and I constantly worried about exams I didn't feel prepared for. No matter how hard I tried, participation and homework barely helped, and I felt completely overlooked as a student.
I constantly felt lost in this class. Lectures went on forever without clear explanations, and I spent nights stressing over exams that felt impossible. No matter how much effort I put in, it never seemed to matter, and I left feeling frustrated, ignored, and completely burned out.
This class left me feeling defeated. I tried to keep up, but lectures were confusing and full of irrelevant tangents. Exams crushed my confidence, and participation didn't help at all. I felt like my effort was invisible, and by the end, I was completely drained and discouraged.
Veryyyy polticalllllll. She cares more about her own opinions, but it's funny when she tries to argue. Only 2 quizzes with readings per week, which is nice, and four exams. Do not speak while she is talking or she will clock you lmao. If you are a business major and have to take her class, GOOD LUCK.
The fact she is still teaching shows a lot about the school. Talks about her political opinions all class and then come time for the exam you dont know any of the material because she spent all class talking about how horrible trump is instead of teaching the material.
Goodluck if you are a male or a business major, especially good luck if you are both. Spends most classes sharing her personal political opinions and yelling at students for no reason. One time I forgot to take my airpods out and she spit multiple times in my face while screaming at me.
I felt singled out and spoken to in a way that made me extremely anxious. I struggle a lot with social stuff so the interaction was harsh enough that it triggered a panic attack. This wasn't about the course content, it was about how I was addressed in class, and it made the environment feel unsafe for me. The way people defend her make me worried.
Class felt like a chore from day one. Lectures dragged, assignments piled up fast, and the workload never really matched what we were actually learning. Attendance was strict, tests were rough, and a lot of class time went off-topic. If you're looking for a clear, organized, and useful course, this probably isn't it.
This class was pretty frustrating. Instructions were confusing, grading felt inconsistent, and the workload stacked up for no real payoff. Lectures didn't help much and it was hard to stay engaged. I wouldn't recommend taking this unless you have no other option.
Really not a great experience. The class felt disorganized, the lectures didn't match the assignments, and it always seemed like we were guessing what she actually wanted. Tests were tough and didn't reflect what we covered. Would not take again.
Pretty disappointing overall. The pace was slow, expectations were unclear, and the class felt like it dragged without much actual learning happening. Grading felt harsh for how little guidance we got. Definitely not my first choice.
Not a fan of this class at all. The lectures felt scattered, the workload didn't match the difficulty, and it was hard to know what she actually expected from us. Tests were stressful and didn't line up with the material. Wouldn't recommend.
The course content itself is very easy, and she provides learning objectives that are going to be on the test. Exams are the most weight of final grade, so the little grades like quizzes and attendance with top hat will matter in the end. The professor herself is harsh when you ask simple questions, can never be wrong, and will go on tangents.
Super political (democrat) and has a very snarky attitude toward her students. Loves to push her views onto students. If you aren't a radical green earther, she won't like you.
Dr. Thompson is ultra progressive and loves to spew out her opinions in class. She consistently asks whether people disagree so she can argue with you. Super unsettling...
Very rude and political. And to the person who had a panic attack from her and her class, I'm so sorry...
She talked about politics heavily and mentioned topics unrelated to the class.
Not necessarily hard. Lots of reading. This is my 13th reason.
Easy subjects. She's the problem, making random cold calls almost every class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Kim is strict! She gave me an F at the start because I joined the class a day late, though the deadline for students to add/drop classes was a week away. She stated I had absolutely no way of making up the missed day. I would have been exempt from the final if I had that grade. I had to dig myself out of a hole I was put into for no reason.
Was one of the worst professors/educators I have ever had. Not only is she rude, but likes to share random facts that aren't always true, as well as her unwanted opinions on things that have nothing to do with plants or biology. The class itself is very easy; however, she makes it hard to sit through.
Kim Thompson is genuinely the worst teacher and most difficult human being I've ever met. She talks about politics that are not relevant to the course, try's to embarrass students and is not aware of the IEP guidelines for the testing center. Which is unacceptable for a teacher to ignore the rules. She is an embarrassment to the university.
Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate Kim since I began to take this class. There are 422 ppm of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each molecule it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for Kim at this micro-instant. Hate. Hate. Hate.
Pro-tip from someone who just had her, take the learning objectives and put it in a Quizlet. You're guaranteed to pass if you do. I wish I did that at the beginning of the year tbh. Road with a D the entire semester but just got it up to a C+ with that strategy! You have to do the readings Be present and pay attention and APPLY YOURSELF!!!
I am a freshman who just finished their first class with Professor Thompson. I was really scared to take her course after reading her rate my professors. But I am here to tell you, her PBIO 1000 course is not that bad! It does require some work, but as long as you keep up you should get an A. Just put a little effort into the readings/use quizzlets
