She does speak English, which is good. Not a bad teacher, but could be much better. Sometimes she explains problems in far more detail and confusion than is needed.

a very good math professor, makes calculus easy to understand even if you aren't a "math person"
a good teacher..however i didnt see her after the first week because i did not attend class..but she wrote easy tests
although i refer to her as "witlessly", she's a good teacher who enjoys saying "slice it up" "chop" "x not" and other weird things...you must see her be a mime in a box, and i'm tellin ya, who wouldnt tap that fine heiney
one word: drop this class
Horrible! Don't even bother trying to look at her test checklists. You'll end up studying for topics that won't ever be on the midterms! She's so random and half the time I don't even think she knows what she's teaching. If you can, find a different math professor!
Go take her class if you think you're good at math. She's pretty fast.A cool person.
this teacher goes way too fast in class. u end up just writing the whole time and not understanding anything. i would recommend not taking her class if uve never taken it in high school. she also wears the same clothes every day, a black t shirt and khaki slacks. eww
Nice lady. Her style is for those who somewhat understand the material beforehand. prepare to invest in tutoring or get help from someone who knows what they're talking about because in class you won't find that for the amount of help you'll need.
drop now!!! she goes way to fast . she makes her test harder than they actually are just because she asks you some pretty random crap. bad teacher
HORRIBLE CLASS AND RIDICULOUS EXAMS!
kind teacher. good at explaining things and explains more for those who don't understand
very nice lady. i had calculus beforehand but i still found her a very good teacher. Better calc teacher than the one i had in high school. she actually cares how her students do and explains things pretty well.
She is a good teacher who clearly knows what she's talking about but she does run through material quickly. For Calc 1 she taught to the level of those who had seen Calc before in high school. She varied the difficulty of exams, one was hard, one was easy, and one was just okay.
This class isn't that difficult for people who have seen calc before and had a pretty good understading understanding of it. The difficulty of her exams aren't consistent. She is a good teacher but I recommend this class for people who have an interest in math otherwise it can get a bit boring and difficult.
teaches as if everyone's already learned calculus. not a bad teacher, but goes really fast. difficult class.
Teaches and explains things well, i recommend you go to the lectures if you havent seen Calc in high school or you will be lost. She does not communicate at all with the TA's so you dont really know what the tests are going to be like. She makes up the tests probably two days before the test and the study guides she gives dont really help much.
A hard class, go to lecture at every opportunity. If you haven't had any calculus experience it may be difficult for you. I know it was for me. She's funny and encourages participation. Don't sleep in class, pay attention and do the homework. Study and memorize what she tells you to. You'll do fine.
Very poor teacher. She weights the tests to the hardest material, so if you get everything until the last day of each chapter you'll fail. Oh, and she wears the same thing everyday, seriously gross.
Very nice teacher..She really cares about her students and their understanding...Can also be very funny...Lecture is mandatory because of the notes she gives...Exams are very hard, especially the final
class isn't very interesting. you will need to go to all lectures since notes are only in lecture. make sure to always be paying attention and that you understand the material since the exam is ten times harder than what she teaches. the final is crazy, she curved like crazy since no one understood anything on it. take the class if you like math.
I have not seen calculus before i took this class. I bombed my first midterm, but then the second midterm was easy, the third midterm was okay. The final was so hard, but really curved. All you need in order to do well in this class is study your butt off. This is not an easy class, but if you try then you should do well. I ended up getting a B.
She went too fast, so if you have never taken calculus before and have her try and find a new teacher.
She likes to start some lectures with pointless videos but its alright. I had to literally read the book to get an A. My TA was pointless. Best to read over the material before the lecture. She likes to go pretty fast. I don't think her outfit ever changed. Black top. Brown Bottom.
Horrible class. She makes it tedious and impossibly hard. The TA that I had could NOT speak English and made it seem like a chore when I came to her for help. The tests only cover the incredibly difficult concepts and the study guides are ambiguous. GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Dr. Whittlessey does not explain mathematical principles enough for a freshmen calc class for architects. Many people in the course I took in Fall 2005 failed it.
Poor teacher. Does not explain the basic elements of calculus well, so her students suffer. I always thought I did well at math, but she showed me otherwise.
Not good at lecturing, but they are a must if you want to pass. Very helpful when I needed help for filing for withdrawal from the course. However, I did hear there was a huge curve on the class, so maybe it was unneccessary, but oh well.
Her tests and quizzes are ridiculously hard, and I have yet to stay awake for a whole lecture. Try to get a new section if you get this class.
I'm not sure why people think she is so bad. If you pay attention, stay awake, study for the tests, and go to her office hours, you can do ok. She is a pretty funny person. Sometimes her lectures can be unclear, but she tries to work with the class.
tests are not real situations; far too difficult
I am a freshman coming from a low income high school and so far my grade for this class is A-. Go to every lecture and discussion, study her study guides + homework problems and you guarantee yourself at least a B.
Smart professor, but not the best at explaining problems. She leaves out steps and often leaves me confused. You will probably benefit more from your T.A than her. Her study guides are generally harder than her test, which aren't too bad.
The class is challenging, but not impossible. She is an excellent lecturer. She may go fast but if you review the notes afterwards it's not really a problem. Exams are extremely difficult, so make sure you study. There is ALWAYS a huge curve so it's not bad.
Her tests are really hard. Make sure that you go to your TA office hours, otherwise you will be so lost. I hated going to lecture, but I had to since some things she explains a specific way (and thats necessary to get the points on her exams/quizzes). Try to avoid!
Took her class last semester. Was sick for the first exam and spoke with her about missing the exam. She said to get a doctors note and two exams would be averaged instead of three. Received a zero on the exam and a D+ for the course.
Horrible class. Web homework will consume your time enormously. Her lecture is disorganized and unclear. Exams and quizzes are ridiculously difficult. I saw 90% of people couldn?t finish the exam when the time was over. I expect A for this class but I don?t want to meet this professor again.
Had way to much homework per week; it was all so unnecessary. Never had any idea what was going to be on the exam, plus the TAs made you feel stupid for not understanding something. Waste of time considering I still havent learned anything.
She is the best professor giving me lecture at this semester.
She is a great professor! The class isn't easy and the homework and tests are hard, but if you put in the effort, you can do well. She is extremely helpful, especially in office hours, and funny. Definitely recommend her for Math 221!
I thought she was great! she really explained well, and made calculus somewhat enjoyable!
Book is pricey and only used twice. Buy it on IBX and get WebAssign from the source. Whittlesey is clear, concise, passionate, and sarcastically funny. If you don't care, you won't do well. Don't sleep, chat, or disrespect her. Do the midterm reviews. They tell you almost exactly what will be on the exams. You'd be a fool not to. Best TAs ever.
Took her calc 1 class, she is a lecturer and lecturers like one. Her class is harder than the other professors calc classes. She is clear and makes sense, she will take the time to explain at office hours. I bought the book, very expensive, used it for homework once. Only reason to buy is bc it is required for calc 1 through 3.
Excellent professor, very clear examples, and generous curve. She may be a little more difficult on the exams, but it is very reasonable for Calc for peoplewho have taken calculus.
Very good lecturer and sarcastically funny. Quite helpful if you attended office hours, and doing midterm/final exam reviews are a must. Class was difficult and she was challenging, however I would still recommend this professor.
Good teacher.
I like this professor so much. She is hilarious and makes learning math such a interesting thing!
Kind professor who will go out of her way to help you so long as you ask for it. With that being said, her lectures can sometimes be unorganized and not very clear. Attending office hours is highly recommended.
Funny, very concise in lecture, very good at explaining things, cares about her students' success
she is really funny and clear during classes. Super patient too. unexpectedly she made the class actually interesting. overall, comon its math you have to study for it.
This class felt like a very long marathon to live through. The homework was very stressful and difficult. To get a good grade, you have to put in every single bit of effort you know how to give. There were many TAs available for help. Kim was good at explaining lectures, but it was very fast paced
Calc II is SUPER hard but she is a great professor. She will explain things as well as she can, but it really is up to you to do your homework and go to tutoring to figure the rest out.
I thought that the class was extremely challenging and I did not find her very helpful at answering my questions, but this may be because I was so lost for most of the class.
It's definitely a tough class and there is a lot of work that needs to be put into it. She's a very kind lady and is always more than happy to answer questions and make you understand the topic as simply as possible. That being said, go in for office/tutoring hours if you are confused with anything as it is much more helpful than just the lectures.
Professor's lecture is cool. She is a cute person.
Linear Programming is somewhat difficult, but Prof. Whittlesey makes the course interesting. It's her first time teaching this course, so the homework is quite tricky and conceptional, but she will surely do much better in the future semesters.
She seems like a really nice person who admittedly makes good lectures, but some questions on her quizzes and tests cover material that we have not even learned yet. There is no way to solve them unless you have already taken higher level math, and when you email her about asking for how to solve it with what we learned it is complete radio silence
The exams are way more difficult than the homework/practice exams/worksheets. The lectures go over easy problems instead of the more difficult ones we see on the worksheets. Office hours are only once a week with the professor and she is very slow with answering emails. There is extra credit if you do homework early which in nice.
I had some (not much at all) experience with Calc from high school, and the lecture notes definitely consolidated concepts. I do feel at times she goes through tough concepts quite fast, so self-revision is important. Exams are usually HARDER and not similar to what's given as practice. Quizzes and Exams can be dropped, and there is some extra cr
Not only was the class content disorganized, you'll also receive a lot of painfully difficult coursework. You also have at least 1 quiz or test weekly! But the coursework doesn't relate back to the quiz or test at all. If you get a bad TA like I did then there really is no hope to pass. My tip is to switch class immediately.
Final is pretty easy. She gives extra credits if you finish WebAssign earlier. I don't think she is a good teacher but you can get an A as long as you spend some extra time. PLEASE DON'T TAKE Math 231 with Lena.
Lectures were clear and explain concepts pretty well. Tests were often difficult and sometimes much harder than quizzes and practice exams. There were several opportunities to get points though, and grading policies were fair.
Probably the best calc teacher at UIUC. Lectures were super clear and she was very fair with grading
The lecture videos are just of her reading of slides, of maybe two examples and then moves on. The tests in the CBTF are all or nothing. Even if you know the material there is still a chance that you could fail the examlets. Be prepared to look up other lecture videos, and practice a whole bunch outside of class.
Exam every two weeks at CBTF, only 5-6 questions. If you get two wrongs you will fail the exam. THe lecture is basically she's reading the slides. Don't take 221! take math220!
This is easily the worst professor I have ever had. You can put so much work into this class, complete the reviews and homework, and then the tests will be absolutely nothing like any of it. The average for the class is extremely low and she does not care about her students at all. Avoid Calc 3 with her at all costs because it is impossible.
awful professor, not every hard exam, not any useful practice.
Her lectures were just her word vomiting her notes onto the chalkboard and then most likely making a mistake and having to erase everything and start over. It was her first time teaching 24 but I have heard from other students that she is like this in all of her classes. Find some other teacher. It's not worth it.
Whatever you do, don't take this professor. Her test averages were at least 20-30 percent worse than other professors with the only trade off being that she will "curve the class at the end". The exams are extremely tough with averages in the mid 60s. The main problem with Whittlesey is that the exams are more difficult AND graded much harder.
Sometimes you need to do some reading outside of the class for better understanding on the materials. But the professor is really nice and patience. If you got questions you can always go ask.
I personally stopped attending lecture after the first exam, her lectures are simply not good, and the worksheets you do are way too hard, since they were graded by completion and not correctness. However, her exams have this weird way of making you feel smart for doung them properly. Use Paul's Online Calc Notes, and self study for the A.
Whittlesey has a charismatic personality, but her lectures are largely unhelpful. Midterms and the final make up 75% of the grade, so a perfect hw grade doesn't mean much. Midterms are usually 7-8 questions, so if you do badly on one question, you're already screwed. She also claimed that she would curve the final grade, but she did not.
the material for this class is a breeze if you've taken high school calculus, can be easily tested out with proficiency exam, didn't study too much and received an A, took this class fall of 2021
I enjoyed her enthusiasm for the topic, however, a lot of the time the lectures only tangentially cover the homework assignments. I also felt the exams were a bit unfair, and I often felt like I couldn't really prepare for them, no matter how much I studied. The worksheet assignments were also disproportionately hard. Calc III is tough, good luck.
She was nice but definitely one of the worst professors you can get for calc. Lectures rarely made sense, had to learn a majority of the material outside of class, and exams were significantly more difficult than other sections. Don't recommend.
She's a nice lady but her lectures dont provide any helpful information at all. She rambles on about topics that make no difference, an example if when she talked about texas for 20 minutes for a 50 minute class. The help she gives after class also just leaves you with more questions. I recommend taking another professor, if you have her good luck.
good professor, teaches well, but the overall course content is difficult regardless of who your prof is. this course if very exam heavy. also be sure to be ready to drop $100 on the online text!
Prof. Kim is kind and always willing to help. Calculus is a difficult class, and there's a lot of time you need to put in outside of class. Even with three lectures a week, it's unrealistic to expect to learn everything. I did well in this course by keeping up with practice problems, and I would go over every topic carefully before an exam.
Lectures were a bit rushed, but there was a lot of material to cover, so A LOT of studying (3-5 hours/day) is required in order to get a good grade. Online homework and discussion worksheets are way more difficult than what's on the exam. Professor Whittlesey does care about our mental health and likes to give as much exam credit as possible.
Her teaching style is inconsistent and will confuse you if you have never taken calculus. Better off watching full lecture vids on youtube
Down to earth professor who tries her best to make material as palatable as possible. Tends to rush through lecture material, often leaving problems incomplete. Is helpful on a one-to-one basis through various resources. Homework and other assignments usually much harder than lectures and exams, nonetheless grading is more favorable than harsh.
This is a case of a really nice Professor but is not a great lecturer. Lectures felt unplanned and often over complicated a topic despite her good intentions. My discussion TA sat in on one of her lectures and said "I understand why she has the lowest class average for the tests." Once again she is very nice but struggles to teach content clearly.
didn't teach in class. Nice lady but cared more about connecting socially, than academically. she left many problems unfinished on our first day learning the topic cause "you should be able to finish it yourselves.Clear she thought everyone had a background in calc or was able to teach themselves. If you cant teach yourself you just might fail.
Professor Kim is very caring of her students. She tries to make the lectures as fun as possible and is an easy grader. If you are going to take Calculus, I definitely recommend taking her lecture.
Kim is a great person, and she engages well with her students. She often goes on tangents and makes lots of mistakes in class. She connects well with her students socially. During lectures it's hard to read her handwriting and I would often have to look at another professor's notes to understand the topics. She moves fast in lectures as well.
Plenty mistakes within lecture, often goes off-track, never answers questions directly, struggle to finish problems, messy handwriting, difficult exams that don't line up with the difficulty of lecture and homework notes. Often has her notes pre-written, BE FAST! Would avoid this professor at all costs. Cares more about socializing than teaching!
She does not understand the material that well and constantly makes mistakes. Rushes through problems and expects students to finish them and understand the notes
Dr. Kim is very nice, funny, and caring. Her lectures are absolutely amazing, she explains concepts extremely well. Attendance is not manatory for MATH221 but it's absolutely worth it to wake up for an 8am when she's the one teaching.
Honestly just prepare to be doing a lot of learning outside of class. I wish I would've had more time to take advantage of office hours because lectures are simply not enough. I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the topics BEFORE even going into lecture because she jumps into complex concepts without giving any background on what it is.
She was very difficult to understand and many time she made no sense when teaching. Throughout lectures she would make many basic math mistakes. If you are required to take the class please choose another professor, and if you have to take it with Dr. Kim prepare for her to connect to students through jokes and fun however not actually teaching.
She made so many mistakes in lecture and wasn't that great at teaching, in my opinion. The exams were way harder than any of the material we were given in class, and I never felt prepared. I had to essentially teach myself everything.
It's clear that she cares about students and wants them to succeed. Her teaching is pretty standard, as if you were following the textbook. She's willing to give tons of support. Quizzes were tough and exams fair, but there's a good amount of resources to help you prep. Calc 1 is a learning curve for 1st years regardless of prof, but she's good.
Very test-heavy professor, exams in CBTF every two weeks, and many questions on exams with only 50 minutes to answer. If you can't consistently score high on exams, you won't get good grades. If you are a bad exam taker, don't take this class; you will get a bad grade. She doesn't curve. HW, worksheet, and exam are way harder than what she teaches.
She's okay, friendly, but really hard to follow in lecture. You really gotta put in effort outside of the class to do well on the exams. It's worth most of your grade and hard to come back from a back grade. Really try in discussion as well. If you feel good about your calc knowledge it's okay but expect not to retain much from lecture.
The first two exams are not bad because they are very similar to the practice exams the last two are more difficult. She is a pretty good lecturer and seems like she cares. Her exams are at the CBTF.
She is a great person who cares about her students, however the tests you will take at the CBTF do not align with the material taught in lectures or the homework at all. Make sure you memorize how to do the practice tests instead, and you should do fine on the actual tests for the most part.
Good experience. Lectures were clear and easy to follow. Exams were definitely harder than I would expect from the lectures, in the sense that you can't just memorize formulas, you have to think.
Professor Kim is very nice, but often times it felt like her lectures did not prepare for what was on the tests. The examples given in class were usually much simpler than those covered in grades discussion sections and ESPECIALLY those seen in quizzes. Be prepared to put in lots of time studying for tests to do well or if you have not taken calc.
Professor Kim was a great professor and was mostly clear with explanations during lecture. There are many opportunities to practice and revise content before exams and quizzes. I personally understood her teaching style but sometimes she would go through examples really fast and I would have to take pictures to review later.
