She'll confuse you like anything.
Stay very far away from this lady. she basically wants you to write about what SHE wants to hear. she is obseesed with feminism!
she is a crazy women, who is bossy, and is rude. She wants you to write about what she wants, she gave me a hard time, n i still got an A on my papers from the panel.
she cried in class a couple times while talking to us. not professional. she's reasonable if you talk to her outside of class, but doesnt seem to realize that she can be rude during class.
I think she is good teacher, very friendly and tells funny stories. She is helpful to everyone in class and very helpful if you go to her outside of class. She paces out the work well so you don't have a huge workload all at one time.
Horrible teacher! No help at all if you have trouble, doesn't tell you up front that you have to have a subject with support for both sides. She is also very very rude and not cooperative if you pick a subject she doesn't agree with, even if you have the support to back it up with!
I thought she was a nice teacher. When it was time for my IPP she told me exactly what to do. When I did my Ruff Draft she told me exactly how to make it better. If you ask she'll help you out a lot more than any other teacher. She tries to help you if you are helping yourself.
She gave me extra time on my paper when I needed it. I had trouble using the computer to do research and she helped me with that. Like said before, if you ask for help she eill go out of her way to help you.
she loves her chicken biscuits and pepsi. the only teacher i had ever known to be late to class on a consistent basis. very unprofessional. i received more help from other students in two days than she gave throughout the entire semester. i'm glad i was able to utilize my knowledge from previous english classes because i learned nothing from her. i think the only positive comment i have about her is that she gave you extra time on your paper which was helpful to other people.
Very rude, don't seem she cares what she teaches, always late to class, not prepared, and for all she just say things that can hurt other people's feeling!!!
Actually fun, Kim is fun, she will challenge you to provide evidence for any claim you make. overall, good class.
will work with you if you need help. very understanding
Knowledgeable, challenging in a good way. She can come off as rude, but that's just the way she is, don't let it get to you. She may be pushy on some things like your ideas or topic, but be an adult: consider what she says and stick to your guns if you don't agree. She was late once, I have never seen her eat a chicken biscuit or drink a Pepsi.
I agree with all of the comments about rudeness. She was late to class almost EVERY day, she has a condescending tone and her instructions are not clear. On more than one occassion she gave contradicting information-- put one thing on the board (and Blackboard) for an assignment, then expected something completely different. Overall she is very bad
I think some of you are crazy. This teacher was really good. She helped me a lot and I learned so much. She was never late or rude. I loved this class, and I thought I was going to hate it because I hate English. She was fun.
She was really straight forward(almost rude). You may think you were doing bad bc she can be critical, but you end up doing well. She gives extra time on deadline stuff. Get on her good side, talk to her during office hours, participate in class, agree with her...you should get an A
This is one of the best english teacher there is. I learn more form her in one emester than I did in all the previous english classes that i have. If you struggled in this subject then consider taking a class with her. With all the help that she gave you, the assigments/essays became very easy to complete and with a high quality.
Her class is easy as long as you do the work. She's VERY opinionated and isn't afraid to tell you what she thinks. As long as you don't take take things personally you'll realize she's not trying to be mean. She always apologizes if she's too harsh. Honestly, she's one of the most understandingand nice teachers! She likes students who participate!
Nice person, not too much work, not hard to get an A if you do what you are supposed to. Not strict on due dates as long as you have a valid reason.
I took this course when I first came to VCU. Read the assigned material, participate, go to class and you will do well.
I took her for Focused Inquiry part 2. I really liked her. I thought she was really easy, but not always clear on what she wanted. As long as you do the work, you'll get an A. & stay on her good side. lol.
Class is not hard but she is obnoxious and condescending, avoid her if you can
I loved this teacher. She cared about all of her students. She's the best teacher I've had at VCU.
She's a really awesome teacher. If you don't understand something, she'll explain no problem. Many classes are debates or the like and giving your opinion is a grade. She eases you into the college environment. Take her!
Love, love, love!! She is awesome and she loves her job. Soometimes shes not clear on what she wants but she grades so easy it doesnt even matter. Sometimes she gives a heavy workload but the work is easy and is mostly readings. I would take her if you want an easy A. Just do your work and papers.
My first semester with her, I really liked her. She always posted needed information and assignments online, and she was very nice. This semester, though, she's been acting very nasty and I feel like I never know exactly what I need to be doing for the class. She never posts anything online, and she gets mad at you in class if you did it wrong.
I had her for both 111 and 112. I can't wait to get out of this class. Sometimes the workload isn't a lot, but it's not evenly spread out. It's either nothing, or a TON. I currently have a 5-7 pg paper, blog comments to do, blog entries, portfolio writing assignment, and a presentation. She can be very rude, but also nice. I say avoid!
I had her for both 111 and 112. She hands out As. When she gives you work she gives you a ton of it at the same time towards the end of each semester. She is very rude sometimes but she cares about her students. If you take her morning class then expect to see her walk into class 5 minutes late eating a donut and sipping on dr. pepper.
I loved this teacher. She worked so hard to help us. I felt like she was the only one of my teachers who cared about me. Her class was fun!
She is an absolutely wonderful and caring teacher. She truly cares about helping student, and you can really tell she loves her job. I was absolutely completely satisfied with this class. <3 mrs. zicafoose!!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS LADY! SHE IS SO HAPPY AN ENERGETIC. SHE ALWAYS WALKS IN CLASS WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE. HER ASSIGNMENTS ARE EASY AND SHE IS VERY EASY ON GRADING. EASY A!
Interesting content but this course required too much work. The entire class revolves around an ongoing group project. A TON of reading lengthy scholarly articles (at least 3 a week)and printing. I worked the hardest for this A than I ever had. Be prepared to WORK!
As a required class I would recommend her. She is fun and helpful. The required work seems pointless but she makes it easy and you learn from it. Recommend.
This class was fun. We worked hard but the teacher was so enthusastic and helpful. Loved it, loved her. Recommend!
I started out enjoying but quickly learned to hate this class. Zicafoose is inconsistent at best and many times completely off topic, she may times makes her personal life more important than classes and seems to slack off on what she needs to do for class. if she performed in the same manner in an office she would be fired.
This was the best teacher I have had at VCU. She was so helpful and really wanted her students to do well. I loved going to class each day. Recommend for 111 and 112.
As a required course, she is the way to go. She will NEVER give you busy work and she will do activities that will actually stick with you and help you in college. Our projects are fun and every assignment she gives us she gives us plenty of time to do it well. Funny lady. Would recommend!
While I can appreciate what her class is trying to accomplish in trying to open up the minds of students and encourage critical thinking, she is trying to do something that simply won't work. She has exceedingly high standards for freshmen and it can be frustrating. Her workload is never even. You'll switch between no work and giant surges of work.
Awful. Completely uninspiring and hasn't shared a single grade. Currently sitting in class (showed up at 8:00am for the final exam; it is now 9:30) and she has yet to show up. Never updates blackboard and class perpetually fell behind. I would suggest everyone to avoid this class.
Awful teacher. Made us do assignments that didn't matter and the presentations she made us do were just embarrassing.
She's the bomb!! Her exchanges with students are harsh sometimes, but she's just blunt. She is ALWAYS willing to help if a student is actually confused and will spend tons of time with you after class and in her office hours to help you understand. No busy work, very understanding about late assignments, and makes the class as easy as she can.
If you do the assignments, she will give you an A. All you have to do is follow her rubrics. She basically hands you an A if you follow her guidelines. She's very understanding about late work and understands that we are all human and we miss class and miss assignments. She's awesome!!
All her assignments are vague & not updated (most of our due dates on rubrics are last springs) & she somehow expects everyone to just know when everything is due. Also she is extremely condescending and speaks to all the students as if they are idiots. Every single class she says something offensive, insulting, or just downright rude to students.
She's an okay teacher. She will reiterate that she has taught this class for a long time but it's okay. This is a heavy readingannotation class so if you don't read you're going to fail the test that she gives. This class also has a group paper aspect so if you don't work well with others don't take this class
So, Extremely condescending. So so so rude. She'll make you feel like you should drop out.
Unfortunately, the class itself isn't incredibly interesting. What truly made this class miserable for me was the professor - I found her to often be catty, a poor communicator, and condescending, a mix which made for a strange classroom environment. Would not recommend.
This teacher is one of the best I've had at VCU. She spends hours helping students in her office and she was always willing to answer questions and give more examples. Her class was so fun. I would take her again. I never thought she was rude at all, but she is very blunt. She expects you to work hard.
If you don't participate, you don't pass. There is A LOT of writing involved as well. She assigns group work without explaining exactly how she expects you to work together in the online setting. It got very confusing at times. She was also difficult to get in touch with.
Condescending, rude, speaks down to students and insults their intelligence yet at the same time barely does her job. Class was very disorganized, assignments and due dates were changed constantly with little effort on the professor's part to communicate such information. Material itself wasn't too challenging. Avoid if possible.
This professor was awesome. She's so nice and helped me so much. I've never had a teacher who cares so much that her students do well.
Professor Z was the best teacher I had at VCU. I wouldn't say she is rude, maybe blunt is a better word. She really cares about her students & is pretty lenient when it comes to due dates. A few group projects, ask questions if you don't understand. This was the one class I looked forward to attending. More of a conversation style than a lecture.
She can be confusing as to expectations for certain assignments. Class can get boring at times when she lectures. She is very opinionated. Avoid if possible
Incredibly condescending and opinionated, and often talks down to students. Not consistent in grading or work load or due dates. Unorganized class enviornment and barely does her job. Class consisted of her walking in late, going off topic, eating chips sometimes during presentations and drinking Dr Pepper. Avoid if possible.
Professor Z was by far the best teacher I had during my time at VCU. She is very open to working with you if you put forth effort, and genuinely wants her students to succeed.
Do not take if possible. Unclear and then get's upset when no one understands. Condescending and rude. Says she will post assignments for the upcoming week the Friday before, does not end up posting until the Monday/Tuesday of that week (if at all). Has not graded any of our serious assignments so I have no idea how I am doing. Overloads with work.
Super condescending when you try to ask questions, gives a totally unnecessary amount of coursework for a beginning UNIV course. Also doesn't think about deadlines so will assign big projects due on the same day, only to change them and only tell a few students.
I do not like English very much and Mrs. Zicafoose made sure it stayed that way. I honestly think she assigns too much work, mainly because she can't even get grades back to students on time. Don't recommend!
This class was so good. I learned so much and thought Ms. Z was the best. She is the most caring teacher I ever had.
She's boring and you have to keep up with her assignments, but definitely the easiest out of the Focused Inquiry teachers. I also found her super helpful with feedback it you take advantage of it.
Had her for 112 and she was TERRIBLE. At first she was chill but she started piling up work, and she didn't grade them until the end of the semester. She was rude! Had to write a narrative and I wrote about Asian discrimination. At our individual meeting she told me that Asian discrimination wasn't real and I must've imagined it. Do not take her!
The material for this class is subjective, but somehow if your opinion differs from hers then you're wrong even though she "encourages" thinking and analyzing from multiple perspectives. She also went on a rant using the n-word and came up with a poor apology/excuse when called out for it by a student. Overall she teaches like a dictator.
I loved the class discussions we had about recent events and current topics. No topic is off limits and she encourages sharing multiple points of view, including her own. In our one-on-one meeting we discussed what it meant to be trans and outside the gender binary, and she was completely willing to listen and learn from my personal experiences.
She gives a lot of work and takes forever to grade. You also do not get a lot of time for some of the assignments. Most of our class time is spent discussing issues that do not pertain to anything and end up just being controversial and very uncomfortable. Other than that she is pretty good and giving feedback on essays. Lots of class discussions.
Can be tough at times, but she is a teacher who really cares about her students. 9/10 would recomend
Will work with you whenever you ask
Not absolutely terrible, but not amazing. Lots of class is focused on discussion of current events, but it often doesn't correlate with the assignments. She'll work with you if you directly ask for help, but will make you work for it. If you're sensitive like me, beware, she oftentimes comes off as inpatient and condescending.
I can tell she really cares about education and trying to customize her teaching styles to student's individual needs. She was always open to feedback and did her best to make a required university class stimulating and insightful. She dedicated time to having one-on-one meetings with students and put real effort into her commentary on assignments.
I had her for 112 in the fall and now have her for 200 in the spring, and 200 is actually a ton easier. The entire class is pretty much you researching a topic of your choice and then writing a 10-15 page paper at the end of the semester. You really just have to make sure you keep up with the work or else you'll get really behind.
Doesn't putz around with seeming faux-inspirational, nor is she not self-aware. Probably the hardest UNIV200 class, but it was worth it to get a great grade on the final paper. She may try to push your paper in directions you don't want to go. Otherwise the teaching was concise with very few external assignments.
If you're taking UNIV and want something you can blow off and still pass, don't take Kim. Kim's class is hard in the way that she actually expects you to care about it, even though no one cares about UNIV. It's a lot of work, but definitely doable.
she's great ;)
Assignments are pretty straightforward but discussing with her can be a bit frustrating. She tends to talk over students and you can tell she thinks a bit more highly of herself than she would like you to believe. She will clear up any and all questions you have about assignments however.
If you interact and talk in her class, she will be very generous with assignments and grading. She just wants the class to think mature and more analytically. Lots of discussion in the class inherently, but if you participate in class she will be very gracious with homework and due dates.
Professor Zicafoose was honestly one of the best professors I've had at VCU. She was so caring and understanding and helped me out when I got majorly behind in UNIV 200. She cares so much and just wants to see everyone succeed. She also gave me really good feedback on my paper that helped me so much because I can't write papers for my life.
Dr. Zicafoose really cares about her students. She makes sure the material covered is understood by the whole class, and she has office hours that are open to all students. I would recommend taking her class. I learned a great amount from her class and my writing became stronger. She has been teaching for a long time, and knows what shes doing.
The workload for this class is 3 essays, a few readings from the textbook or in the Blackboard folder, one multimodal project, 2-3 quizzes (she lets you know in advance when theyre happening), 1 group project, 1 solo project, short reflections due every Sunday night, and an easy midterm and final. Its very doable. She is willing to work with you.
The work load of this class is a bit irritating, and there is a habit of putting things on blackboard and not speaking on it. She is super nice though and really tries to get good work out of you, and if you arent willing to work then skip over this class.
Great teacher and person. Gives great feedback on essays and wants to help you write better. Great choice for UNIV112
Go to class. If you dont, you wont do well. She cares about her students, and is very honest which is refreshing. You come out of her class a better writer, honestly
Prof. Zicafoose is so caring with her students! The class is such a breeze if you just go to class and don't procrastinate too much on her work. It'll pile up, trust me. During the coronavirus, she sent emails to her students letting them know that she knows everything is hard and was willing to adjust due dates and essay lengths. Best prof ever!!
I highly recommend taking professor z's univ 112 course. It's group heavy, but she's understanding, so if there's any inter-group issues you can move to another group of get credit for the quality of your work. She's really sweet and if you have any deadline issues she's happy to provide extensions if you have a solid reason (including stress).
Kim is the best English professor I have ever had. She genuinely cares about your writing and gives great feedback on how to improve. She cares about each student and works with you if you're struggling in class. Very straightforward about expectations and grading. Definitely going to take any class she teaches for my degree. TAKE HER CLASSES!!!!!
Her class may seem intimidating at first but honestly it is not. You work towards writing one 15 page research paper and was pretty easy. Professor Zicafoose did assign some miscellaneous work but it was simple stuff. Just pay attention in class and participate. She is very nice if you talk to her and is willing to help.
I also had her class for Univ 112, she is a very easy and nice professor, kind on grading and late work. If you participate and pay attention in class you'll get an A. She values concepts/ideas rather than grammar. She is super understanding with any problems you may have, and responsive with email and text. Take her class!!! You won't regret it.
I also had her for univ112. She is very nice and willing to help. Homework wise there was an average of 2 assignments due each class. There were a lot of participation assignments but as long as you actually tried she would give a 100.
Condescending and incredibly rude, even to students who were asking questions in order to understand what an assignment entailed. Personally calls you out in front of the class for mistakes, and uses sarcastic and demeaning tones constantly. Incredibly behind on grading, I'm still waiting on first draft critiques on a paper I submitted 2 months ago
Prof. Zicafoose is an amazing person and seems to care for students, but I have had bad experiences with her feedback. She is very slow to grade assignments and give feedback, and when she does she confronts your mistakes in a direct and semi-rude manner. I felt very unprepared for the bigger papers since she has failed to grade our first paper yet
She is knowledgeable about writing and flexible with due dates. However, her feedback on essays and interactions with students often betray her bigotry and unprofessionalism. Avoid.
She teaches a gen-ed course so expect about as much. She is a little bit unclear with instructions -- I got quite a few last-minute announcements about what to do -- and takes a while to grade. Very nice lady and leads interesting discussions. If you show up to class and do the readings you will be fine.
I took her 8 week Summer course. She seems nice as a person and was accessible outside of class and she seemed to care about her students in general. But her feedback was harsh and often went beyond constructive criticism. She took forever to grade any assignment whether it was 10 point discussion or unit project. Nice person, not a good professor.
