A fun class that was really easy. Dr. Ange puts all of the material on Vista, which is good because she has a tendency to go through the slides quickly. Interesting guest speakers & students were allowed to bring in their pets. I would recommend this class to people who need science credit but don't particularly like science.
I had her for Companion Animals, and she is a great professor. She really knows what she is talking about, and is always willing to help. Her quizzes and tests are easy, as long as you study. Pets are allowed in class, and guest speakers come in a lot. If you are interested in animals, this is the class for you!
Had her for Companion Animals and loved it! She's super nice and has awesome experiences to share. The textbook was just a printout of her powerpoints, but it was helpful. Easy class if you love animals. Take it!
Great class. Best Prof. ever!
ONLINE CLASS-a lot of reading but no lectures to listen to. be sure to study because the tests are descriptive and requires you to remember small details on some questions. be sure to take notes when you listen to the guest lectures and study those as well! She also offers an EC assignment which is a nice grade boost in addition to EC on tests
Dr. Ange was one of the worst professors I've had at State. All she did was read directly from lecture slides. Her tests were impossible because they were made up of multiple choice questions with 'mark all that apply'. and was 20 minutes late to the final exam. She tried to take points off my grade because I switched into the class a day late
The only thing I liked about this class were the guest lectures & animals being brought in. I believe I would've liked the class better if there were a different teacher. Dr. Ange loves to hear herself talk, especially when class is over! She keeps adding more info when it's time to go. She is rude & cocky. Also, this class has A LOT of material!
I absolutely loved Dr. Ange!! She was always so helpful and answered everyones questions and the tests are easy if you actually study! I think some people feel that it is a joke class and then get mad when they are failing. She is awesome and I am her TA now and love it!! Take her class if you love animals its the best!
I was in her Intro to companion animals class and she is an excellent teacher. She records her material online and has a $40 textbook which is basically following the material she uses in class. A lot of the class is knowing animals, breeds and behaviors along with guest speakers and animals that come to class. Overall, very fun and helpful.
Dr.Ange's class is extremely easy. Everything you need is in the coursepack and she does a good job of explaining it. It is a lot of memorization, but it's stuff that is fairly easy to understand. Her tests are basically the same every semester. Pay attention to little details and guest lectures!! She gives a lot of extra credit. Easy A+.
Great class
Fantastic teacher and class!
Awesome teacher. A lot of TA's which is convenient. Two review sessions before each class. Goes a little fast sometimes but not always and puts the powerpoints online. A LOT of extra credit available.
Dr. A is really cool and her class is fun. Attendance affects your grade, after 3 she starts taking off points. A LOT OF INFO ON TESTS, but it's all in the course pack. Pays very close attention to detail but it's interesting so you'll remember!
Dr. A is an excellent professor who gives long tests, but the information is easy and she makes sure that any and all of her students can pass. You will need to study, but it's not as rigorous as many other classes.
Excellent teacher. Anything she says is fair game for a test, so it's important to write down anything she says that isn't already in the notes. Overall a very fun class.
This was a great class. Dr. Ange is a lot of fun and her lectures are posted online. Also, people are allowed to bring their pets and there are several cool guest lecturers. The test are long but if you study the night before, you'll be fine. She gives study guides that are really helpful.
This class is great if you love companion animals. She is very exciting to listen to and she even lets you bring your pet to class! She offers plenty of ways to get a good grade in the class.
This was the best online class I have taken. She provides a lot of information and resources. She also does collaborate sessions so she can interact with students. Very quick to respond to emailsanswer any questions you may have. Must really understand material to do well on test. She provides extra credit opportunities.
Don't take her. She barely knows what she is talking about and goes off on rants all the time to make her seem like shes smart. She gets behind on lectures a lot and ends up putting a lot of information on the tests. Everyone thinks it is an easy grade but there is so much information and if you do not study, you will not pass.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy GEP- I was wrong! This class is mainly for pre-vet students and the tests are really hard; but it's a fun class, and if you are willing to study it is worth taking. Dr. A is really nice, helpful, and fun. AND you can bring your pet into class (with permission from Dr. A)!
Dr.A was a great professor. Her lectures were interesting and the info during them was on the tests (she didn't include anything she didn't talk about). Guest lectures and videos are important to pay attention to, they are on tests and in detail. She gives extra credit and if you at least look over notes the notes you will get an A.
Dr. A is a wonderful woman who knows what she is talking about. She offers a course-pack that is all slides she uses in lecture. BEWARE she will test on things discussed in lecture so attendance is important. The best part of class is having pets and guest-speakers' animals attend class and have them walk around freely. The tests are long.
Overall a pretty easy class, but studying is still a must. There's a lot of info that is easy to learn if you like the subject. Pretty funny and very easy going. Gives a lot of extra credit for events & attendance. Very willing to answer questions and you can bring your pet to class. Also gives a partial credit on tests and records lectures online.
Great class and does exactly what the syllabus says - if you are a slacker - avoid the class!
Good class
Dr. A is a good lecturer, but the class has a ton of information. The tests are intensive because of the amount of material the class covers, but they are manageable if you study and go to review sessions. The subject is also really interesting and having pets in class is a treat!
I love Dr. A! Her Companion Animal class covers a lot of material, but it is very interesting! You can bring you animal to class. Dr. A is very nice and helpful. The tests are long, but they are easy if you study.
Good course and great info
Made way more complicated than it should have been. Too specific on exams, and horrible feedback on exam answers.
Class materials are very interesting but it isn't that specific on per breed/specie care. Also, professor is inaccessible outside of class. She treats online students like distant relatives - people you say hi to at the start of the course but don't really talk to nor guide their progress during the semester.
Dr A's class is a lot of fun. You will learn a lot about all types of pets and people can bring their pets into the class. There are also entertaining guest lecturers. The tests is a tad challenging but it is not too hard to get an A.
Professor Heugten's course for ANS 105 was extremely interesting. She made the course material easy to understand and the tests were based off of the lectures. It is important to come to class as she does take attendance and a lot of the material is stuff that wasn't on the slides in the book.
Dr. A is a great professor. She is enthusiastic about her class and wants her class to do their best. Make sure to pay attention to guest lectures and animal visitors that come to class. There are review sessions before each test and make sure you take advantage of this and ask questions. Look over her review sheets she posts online for tests.
Dr. A is great. Shes super nice and her class is so interesting. Shes very knowledgeable on the subject, so it is best to take everything she says into account. Attendance is mandatory, but skipping just isnt a good idea anyways because she adds so much information thats not on the slides and it is always included in the tests. Great professor.
Dr. A was a fantastic professor. She makes the topic even more interesting than it already is. You can really tell how passionate she is about companion animal science. Definitely get the textbook, as she teaches straight from it.
Pay attention in class, esp little points that may seem insignificant (ie guest lecturer's name) b/c will pop up on test. A LOT of information, you have to really study and pay attention to how tests are formatted. It really is an enjoyable class, but you have to put in the effort to do well. Go to class, get the textbook and take good notes
Dr. A is wonderful! Her lectures are very interesting and she invites a lot of different guest speakers to speak. Like your typical class you have to study your notes and textbooks to make a good grade. She does offer an extra credit paper to replace a test grade and there are extra credit questions on all of her exams. Shes great I loved her.
Do not buy the textbook, it is an exact copy of the powerpoints provided in class. I hardly ever took notes either. Lectures can be boring sometimes. Quizzes are almost identical to the tests. This class is basically just how good your memorization skills are. She also hates to see people on their phones.
As a non-animal science major, this class was pretty dense and a lot more work than expected but the material was interesting and the guest lectures were fun. Everything said in class is fair game for tests so write down everything and pay close attention. Unrealistic amount of time for quizzes so think quick and study for them.
Dr. A was alright as a person but as a professor I personally didnt like her teaching style. Everything goes for the tests, quizzes, and final. So if were talking about domestic cats and someone gets off topic asking about tigers be prepared cause that may come up. She has a course pack with all the info you need and she posts all the slides.
Dr. A was an amazing professor. Definitely go to class, because she will say things that will end up on the tests. Remember the names and purposes of the guest lectures. If you study a lot for this class, you should be good. The review sessions and the quizzes were very helpful. Remember names of animals brought to class for extra credit, also.
I was an undergrad taking ANS 590, and I loved every minute of it. Short lectures for each unit, and a massive project you get day one, but there's a lot of points if you struggle in one area. I didn't pull an A on any of the exams, but still managed to pull one overall in the course. You'll learn a lot. I met with her for help when I needed.
hard class but fair and great info
Easily offended and very defensive about her class and her obsolete methods of teaching. Requires that you print out EVERYTHING including 40 page journal articles. Crowds presentation slides with paragraphs and statistics. Grading for assignments and exams is subjective/inconsistent. Takes off points for things they didn't ask for.
Dr.A is there for her students and wants you to succeed. I didn't really care about the content but I loved her lectures and never even thought about skipping class. A lot of guest lecturers and the TAs gave great study resources. I suggest buying the book and then writing down anything she repeats or says that wasn't on the slide. Love Dr.A!!
If you have outside knowledge of a subject and it isnt something she says out of her mouth, best to take with someone else if possible. She wants what she want the answer to be and nothing else will be counted right.
Dr. A seems to be a nice lady and quite knowledgeable in her subject matter. However, her teaching methods are outdated. This class is extremely memorization heavy, full of fun facts that one could very easily google. Show up to class, because the most subtle of remarks could be tested on. Dr. A is certainly not for everyone. Proceed with caution.
Dr. A teaches really exciting classes very poorly. Any detail in class could come up on an exam so memorize everything you think could be irrelevant, especially really large and insignificant side details. Does not wish to see her students succeed and won't ever give points back on exams. If you ask she'll respond so rudely you won't do it again.
Easy class but you do need to study. Not the biggest fan of Dr.A she seemed rather lazy and opinionated. Lecture could be boring because she just reads off the slides. Make sure to go to class and take notes on what she says because it will probably be asked on a test. You can sign up to bring your pet to class which was fun.
I enjoyed the material of this class and the fact that pets were brought it. It just was not very engaging and I was hoping to get more out of it, not bad though. Tests are long but super specific and easy if you study. Basically memorizing straight facts for this class. Since it isn't just for ANS/science people, it is a fine class overall.
This class was online due to Covid. She posted all the notes and that was that. We had to learn a lot of material and then take the test via Respondus. She did offer extra credit throughout the semester. However, if I could change what class I took, I would.
This was an asynchronous class when I took it, so it's basically just notes that are on the website and then participation points (which are just small, multiple choice or short answer questions), plus about 3 exams. The exams are proctered with video and audio so you cannot use your notes on them AT ALL. Make sure to study and you'll do fine.
Took Dr. A online this semester and it was the hardest class I had (I'm also a CHASS student). Most of what I learned were fun facts like "your dog can eat chocolate if it isn't dark" kind of thing and it's MEMORIZATION HEAVY. Didn't learn anything since it was all short-term memorization but I think her teaching method is very outdated.
Unless you care about learning useless facts about animals, this class kind of sucked. Her quizzes and tests are all based on how many random facts you can cram into your head which is ridiculous. Everything was closed note, so you were expected to know every random fact in the textbook for assessments. Take a different class if you can.
I took this class during a covid semester. The format of the class was asynchronous. While there is a lot of reading required for the class, this class is one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. Dr. K does give out extra credit opportunities and she defintely makes you work for your grade . If you don't mind the work, she is amazing
The first unit in this class is exactly like ANS 105 so it was annoying to study all of that random info again. Her lecture slides are crowded and disorganized and it's hard to follow along during lectures. She comes off as nice and understanding, but she can be very rude to students who simply ask her for clarification. Her methods are outdated.
I was not a fan of Professor Ange-Van Heugten nor her ANS 105 course. I felt that her teaching methods were both dated and consistently ineffective. The tests were asininely dense and included the smallest of details, and I was shocked at the lack of empathy and the lazy manner in which things were graded- review was impossible. Wouldn't recommend.
Nicely done - especially in the pandemic
Asynchronous class. The tests mostly contained useful and important questions, but they also contained questions that were worthless small factoids from the reading - things that no veterinarian, researcher, or historian would need to know. Very frustrating as a result. The tests distracted from the otherwise very interesting material.
Dr. A's exams are VERY specific!!!!! Make sure to attend lectures because there are many questions on exams about stuff she talks about in class that are not on the powerpoint!!!! Also she doesn't really care about students.
She seems nice when you meet her but her class is so information is specific that there are some things that she'll say once and it'll be part of the test. The class is very memorization heavy. Not great for people with mental issues or learning difficulties. Also guest lectures are also questioned in the test.
great class and worth the effort but should come to class
Dr Ange-Van Heugten is so nice!! However, do not take this class if you are looking for an easy A. Almost anything she says in lecture, even if it's not in the lecture slides will be tested on. You have to be prepared to study even though it's a 100 level course. Overall just put the effort in right away and it will pay off.
Look over your exams because sometimes things get marked off that shouldn't but she has a clear regrade policy. I didn't have to study too hard but you HAVE to pay attention to everything in class/maybe rewatch lectures; anything can be an exam question. She lets pets come to class and is super kind, knowledgeable, and accessible outside of class.
The course is taught all by lecture and there is a lot of information covered. Best if you have prior knowledge before hand, but will still do well if not. Exams are very difficult. Great course if you love the material.
Good class. Learned a lot.
Great class but not for the lazy. Should plan to pay attention and try in the course. Enjoyed it.
Overall, I enjoyed learning the content in this class. However, make sure to write down and know everything that she may say in class including all of the guest and TA lectures! Quizzes and tests are very specific and include multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, short answer, etc. Attending the review sessions before tests can also help!
Dr. Ange-Van Heugten is the only BAD professor I had over my time at NC State. She was VERY rude when I emailed her, and it seemed as if she was rooting for me to fail her class. When I received a passing grade, although she graded my exams more harsh than my friends, she emailed me saying it should surprise as much as it did her that I had passed.
Dr. K is a little strict but that is because her class should be an easy A. Attend, study, and you will do great. I don't think the textbook was necessary though, all the info in the book is on her PowerPoints.
Although the exams contain A LOT of information, and they can be hard, she is a great teacher. This class was very interesting and you can tell she knows her stuff about nutrition. If you are looking to actually learn about nutrition and have it presented in an interesting way she is your go to. Participation matters!
Great class - great professor -
I don't think the professor was bad but I did not enjoy this class, it was stressful when it really did not need to be. I just felt like she rushed through lectures a lot because she would start going off on tangents, and then my biggest complaint would be the lack of feedback on every exam. Annoying since a lot of the questions are open-response.
She's a passionate teacher but this class is an extended version of her ANS105 with required labs where you still need to memorize the guest lecturers names and minute details about them. Her syllabus and what she states in class are two very different things so she will only uphold what she says and not what it states in the syllabus.
Great instructor and easy class. I assume bad reviews are from non majors taking the class.
Class is very competitive to enroll in (usually just seniors). Teacher knows her stuff and the lab sections introduce students to many people that can help us find jobs.
Very knowledgeable and easy to reach outside of class. Fair and wants students to succeed.
This class is lab heavy and provides good networking opportunities for students interested in the field. If you do not have a genuine interest in companion animals, then I would recommend taking a different 400 level
Dr. A is so sweet and caring; however, attendance is mandatory and if you miss lots of classes, you will automatically fail this class. Fun guest lecturers, she gives you as much help before a test as possible. Tests are information-dense but mostly multiple choice. She uses the book but you don't need it.
One of the easiest classes at NC State. Little homework with tests that are easy if you study. Breed identification is very easy. Coursepack is "required" but not needed.
Dr. A was such a fun professor. She really loves what she is teaching and wants you to learn the material. ANS 105 is a really fun class too! Most days we'd have a dog in class, and they were always friendly.
Class is kind of bland, but honestly fairly easy. She teaches straight from the powerpoints. Can be very rude if you ask questions or question her methods. Exams weighted heavily, but they're pretty easy and straight from the material. Just memorize EVERYTHING (yes I mean everything) she SAYS in class, alongside of the material on the powerpoints.
She's a good prof. but a stickler about being on time. Missing forum deadlines will affect your grade (I'd have gotten a A), do those. After 3 classes with her--lectures/papers/exams are always straightforward, she brings in guests to keeps class interesting. She'll call attention to cheating/lying about attendance. Respect her, she'll respect you.
She knows a lot about her field, but she is a very tough grader and not lenient whatsoever. You need to take notes on everything she says. It could be said once and be on the exam. There is extra credit in the class in the form of science events you can attend. Don't take this class if you're not a science person/major.
This class was honestly quite boring. She is very monotone and could make you fall asleep. Make sure to pay attention during the lectures because some of the things said during the lectures is fair game on the tests and quizzes. The Graduate TA honestly did a better job teaching the class when Dr. A was out.
If you are interested or come in with prior knowledge about companion animals then this class will be very interesting and a lot easier. My friends who knew less coming in struggled to keep up with the amount of content. Lectures were mandatory and usually interesting. Overall a fun class! Just be prepared for the amount of material.
This class was similar to ANS105 in the way that tests were formatted and expanded on more companion knowledge. 2 HW assignments, which were paper's that we did based on picking from a prompt and there were also discussion posts. The lab is fun as you get to visit animal shelters, koi farm, NCMNS, etc. Can also potentially be exempt from final.
This class isn't bad, but the exams require you to remember EVERY small detail. Something said once in class can appear on the exam. You're expected to memorize everything. Other than that, Dr. A and her TA are nice, and the class is manageable. It's just very information-dense and some of the stuff you're required to know is slightly ridiculous.
Dr. Ange is a caring professor who cares for her students, and her TAs are kind and always willing to help. The course is manageable, with four quizzes and the lowest dropped. Exams cover material from class and slides, which she usually follows closely. It's a fun class, and if you study, the exams are very reasonable. I would take it again.
The class itself is wonderful, the teacher and TAs are fabulous, and the quizzes are open notes. The first couple of units aren't hard, but it gets difficult once you get into anatomy and diseases. Make sure to study for exams; there will be open-ended questions, and points can be taken off for spelling.
Don't take this class if you hate memorizing. She makes an easy 3-credit class harder than a 4-credit calc class, honestly. One word she said 3 months ago can be on the test, so you really have to write everything down. Know how to take effective notes. I did not enjoy this class; the TAs teach better. Attendance is so serious. Really harsh graders
