Her tests are extremely hard for an entry gened credit. She is also very uninteresting and a hard essay grader. She does curve and gives bonus points rarely. Do not take unless very interested in material or looking for a challenge.

Exams are hard. Questions are tricky and not just from outlines and notes. Does in class participation where she randomly calls on people. Worth a lot so have to go to class.
Had her for three classes. One of my favorite professors. Don't need the book, everything is in outline and can be looked up online. Gives exams moderate in difficulty but nothing covered in outline. Drops lowest exam which is cool. Recommend.
very good instructor. exams made up of material from outline. know whats on the outline and you will ace the exam. assigned readings 100% unnecessary which is good bc the text book is very hard to understand. In class slides are clear. go to class and get the notes, she also does participation which is 20% of grade.
Bergie is def worth taking. Her class is hard but you learn a lot if you come to class. She cares more about her students than any prof I've had and will help you with anything you need. Her test get harder and harder and some of her questions can throw you off but there's nothing on them that she doesn't cover in class.
Prof Bergendahl is a great teacher. She goes over the material that you will need to know. If you put in effort you will succeed. She can be tricky, but it is nothing that she hasn't covered before. 20% participation, which comes in handy. You do need to go to class. She has "study guides" which are helpful if you choose to use them.
Out of all the intro POLS classes Prof. Bergendahl is the worst I've taken. I'm taking it as a junior because I wanted to take all the intro classes. She is going over philosophy related to politics. I love philosophy but it's not very easy when it's called something else. It's presented in a sloppy manner and, as a result, not worth it.
Wonderful class. Very easy and informative. the best advice I can give is to attend class because points are given at random just for being in class and handing in a nominal "participation" assignment! The teacher knows the material and is very helpful. I highly suggest this class and this teacher.
Great teacher, good class. There is a lot to keep up with, but well worth it if you want to learn the material. Be prepared to answer questions during class for points. Show up, get your stuff done, and learn the material. Not the easiest but a fun class none the less.
She is a wonderful professor. Although the material can be overwhelming, she teaches it very clearly and is always willing to meet with students for additional help. She is by far my favorite professor at Uconn. Highly recommended.
Professor Bergendahl is an exceptional teacher in every way. She is very helpful out of class, makes course objectives clear, and stimulates much discussion during class. Her classes are hard and attendance is a Must...but overall the class is worth the time and effort. Thanks KB.

Good prof: impartial, accessible, concerned about her students. Fairly easy class if you put in a little time. Class attendance is a must, especially if you're not gonna read. Her powerpoint slides have all the notes you need for the quizzes and exams. 25% Quizzes are pretty easy; 75% exams are tougher and a little tricky.
By far the best professor I had. Her class is pretty doable if you put in a little effort and attend class. She really cares about the students and is interested in the course material. Very helpful every step of the way, and is clear on what she wants on tests.
best professor i've had at uconn.tests come straight from outlines--as long as you study that you'll be fine. it really just takes effort and time, if you don't do well you can really only blame yourself
This class was a gen. ed. for me and it was an easy A. As long as you show up to lecture and take notes, it will be easy for you. The material is boring but the professor does a great job of teaching it. She assigns readings for you but I never even picked up the book. You have 5 quizzes and she drops the lowest grade.
Fantastic teacher! I worked with her 1 on 1 for an honors conversion and she's incredibly engaging both in and out of class. Highly recommended.
I took two classes with Prof. Bergendahl (Politics of Crime/ Justice & Law and Pop Culture). She was very straightforward and leads very engaging class discussions. One of my favorite profs. at UConn.
Great professor, very engaging and class is interesting. Showed a lot of concern for students, and made sure everyone was clear on class expectations. Fair grader.
Great professor. Really engages the class and what impressed me is that in a class like Politics for Crime and Justice she pretty much always managed to explore all sides of an issue and wasn't very partisan at all. Exams can be extensive and nitpicky (multiple choice questions especially) but overall she's a great professor who loves the subject.
Gets to know her students. Has a dorky sense of humor it's hard not to laugh at. Attendance not mandatory but does random participation assignments. Easy note taking, all from Powerpoints. Exams are tough as hell, very nitpicky/lots of Supreme Court cases to memorize. 2 exams and one 4-5 pg paper. If you pay good attn. to detail, would be okay.
Very good teacher, she genuinely cares about her students. Engages class when giving lectures. Doesn't put full slides up on HuskyCT, so you have to look through the book to see what you missed, and there are random participation assignments. Overall, she's a great lady, she just requires a bit of effort.
Very nice woman, helpful and cares about her students. Tests required a bit more preparation than one might expect. Bergendahl is very engaging and understanding of problems.
Bergendahl is a great professor. She is a genuinely nice person, truly cares for her students, and is extremely understanding. I learned a lot in her class and was always engaged. I would definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Very interesting and helpful, cares about her students. GO TO CLASS because she does a lot of random participation. Some tough and potentially triggering subjects are covered, so be aware of that.
Go to class because it's easy and she gives random participation assignments. If you just take notes and study for the exams, you can get an A; she's very clear with what you do and don't need to know. The book only helps for a few questions on the exams so share it with someone else if you can
Dull subject, but she's a super nice person and is very passionate about it. She tries her best to make it interesting, and it could have been a lot worse. Tests were pretty straight-forward. Show up to class to get the notes, study them before the test, and you should get an A.
Bergendahl is the sweetest! She is a great professor and really cares about her students. There are a lot of assignments so exams are not worth a lot. This is an overall interesting class.
GREAT PROFESSOR! Have taken two courses with her and love the way she teaches. Go to class because sometimes she gives random participation assignments that will boost your grade. She genuinely cares about her students if you should you are working hard and want to learn and success. Highly recommend taking a class with her.
Very informative lectures. She calls you out randomly and in-class assignments count towards your participation grade. The rest of the grade is based on three exams which required a LOT of studying but if you put in the time you will do well enough. Bombed the first one but was able to recover from that with an okay grade. Recommended.
She one of the sweetest professors. She loves what she teaches and her students. It is definitely helpful to go to class because she gives out random participation assignments and loves to have discussions. You definitely have to study her outlines for exams, but she is very clear. I liked her class even though it could get a bit boring at time!
Honestly, she is the best professor I have ever had. Her classes require work, but the takeaway is significantly more than the average UConn POLS class. Great professor and great person. Would recommend to anyone!
I absolutely love Professor Bergendahl. She is the sweetest, funniest, and most knowledgeable professor I have had in the political science department. Her classes are pretty difficult, but in a good, challenging way. You need to go to class and do the readings to do well. If you are engaged, you'll do great. I highly recommend Bergendahl.
Interesting subject and class. Exams are unnecessarily hard, does not test what you learn but what you can memorize. I studied a lot and pulled off a C. Nice lady though, but dont take this class if you dont have to.
I absolutely love prof. Bergendahl! She is one of my favorite professors at Uconn! You must take at least one of her classes before you graduate! She has very hard multiple choice exams (3 of them). This semester the course was Service Learning. It was a bit different, with 3 large writing assignments. Projects did take time, but worth it!
I've had Bergendahl a few times as a professor and she's a great individual, however this was my first W class with her. Her tests were fine, and the material was interesting, however, she is extremely critical with writing and grades as if she were teaching a graduate school class. Would take her again, but not as a W class .
Bergendahl is by far the best professor I've ever had at UConn. Her classes are difficult, exams require a ton of studying, and you have to do the readings and go to class. That said, I've learned more in her class than any other class I've ever taken. It's a lot of work but an amazing experience
Prof. Bergendahl is an amazing teacher and you will definitely get a lot out of her class. However, be warned that it is a hard class. You really have to put in the work and the time to pull off a good grade but it is rewarding. Bergendahl is really nice though, and a great asset to the department. Would 100% recommend.
She is a good professor and knows what she is talking about, but I would not recommend taking her courses due to the amount of time you have to devote to knowing the material for the exams. The exams are unnecessarily difficult and she gives zero options for any extra credit or extra points. Studied like crazy just to get a C. Not worth it.
My absolute favorite professor here at UConn. She really cares about her students and makes the material so interesting. Just go to class, participate, and do the readings. Exams are tough but doable if you are willing to put in the time. Highly recommend any of her classes.
One of the nicest professors but also one of the hardest. She cares for her students yet gives ridiculously hard tests, which 80% of your grade is based on. I studied for hours and hours for each exam and it doesnt even show. Proceed with caution with Professor Bergendahl.
The book goes over everything you do in class so it's not necessary, but can be helpful. Regardless, Professor Bergendahl creates outlines for you, making taking notes & studying super easy. Her tests are all multiple choice, but she will make special tests if the class says they like short answer more because she cares about her students so much.
Professor Bergendahl is one of the most caring, understanding, and especially reasonable professors I have had. She does expect everyone to come to class prepared (although the book really isn't mandatory) and to be ready to have a discussion, and will get frustrated if you don't. Uses fact sheets for attendance, 2 projects, straightforward exam.
This professor has the most difficult, wordy, and intense exams possible. She expects them to be completed in the hour and 15 minute time period of the class. The questions are wordy, long, and difficult. I would not recommend taking a class taught by her. I'm an "A" student and I struggled terribly with this class and teacher.
Didn't really like this class even if Professor Bergendahl was one of the most amazing professors. She is really passionate and you can learn so much from her but her exams were difficult and there's not much to be graded from except exams. Which is not a good thing in my opinion.
She is obviously very passionate about the material she teaches and wants to see her students succeed. She is very accessible outside of class and is willing to answer questions. Unfortunately, she was extremely unaccommodating, even after the entire class gave her similar feedback. If you take this class, be prepared to work for even a B.
Constitutional Law with Professor Bergendahl is definitely a rewarding experience if you are willing to put in the effort. This is not your typical political science course, as it focuses on case law and the application of legal principles. Best advice: go to every lecture and take thorough notes when reviewing the case briefs.
Not accommodating at at all. Makes her tests extremely hard and grades harshly. Would definitely not recommend unless this was a Mandatory class.
Her tests were like trivia games with questions on the most minor details that actually finding your notes on the subject was almost impossible. Most Poli Sci classes have switched to essay based evaluations, she should follow. Even if you miss one class you'll be so behind that the tests and "participation activities" will be impossible. Avoid her
Its been almost a full year since I took Constitutional Law with Professor Bergendahl and after reflecting on it, I really do think it was a rewarding experience. The online format was hard and the exams were the hardest Ive taken at UConn in my 3 years so far, but the knowledge you get out of this class is something that will stick with you.
Professor Bergendahl was a decent professor. The biggest downfall of her teaching was her ability to formulate coherent questions for essays/papers. The questions often were not thought out and were worded poorly. Her grading is also very scattered/inconsistent, I would turn in my weekly papers and really not know what to expect back from her.
AVOID! As a senior, my biggest regret since coming to UConn has been taking this course. Lecture heavy, doesn't under ANY circumstances share notes/powerpoints even if you meet during office hours. Exams are structured so that you have a minute per question. Claims that if a student is not doing welI, it's on them to figure out what to do about it.
I liked her because she is a nice person but as a teacher she gives like 3 tests from this 10000 page text book that make or break your grade besides the 10% participation adds. The multiple choice test was the easiest, but the questions would be very specific and trip you up. The material could be a million things as well so its stressful.
Hard work and effort is rewarded. Always made sure to take the time to review things and spend time with students. Offered option of short response or multiple choice for exams, which was much appreciated. Attendance "not mandatory," but is "mandatory" for a good grade. You don't need the exact version of the textbook, random callings in class.
The participation grade needs to answer a couple open questions. However, she will take 0.2-0.5 points from this only 2 points of these open questions. Her test was also super hard. Do not take this course.
my rating got deleted but please don't take this professor. she grades ridiculously, actively checks RMP and complains about it, and genuinely is such a narcissistic person who gets very defensive when you ask her about her grading. it's like she purposely doesn't want to give out A's. exams are hard too. takes point off for missed opportunity.
Professor Bergendahl isn't as unlikable as the reviews make her seem but her grading is arbitrary. Attendance is mandatory for participation grade, she does 6 checkpoint assessments, and two exams. The exam and checkpoint questions are so vague and poorly written its hard to get a good grade without spending HOURS studying. Avoid her if you can.
Professor Bergendahl is amazing.
Professor Bergendahl's class was based off of 6 quizzes, several participation assignments, and 2 exams. Her exams were quite difficult and the questions were incoherent at times. Although the quizzes I found relatively easy. Honestly she just didn't really care about her students, even if she claimed to, and made the class incredibly confusing.
Prof. Bergendahl was very straightforward with her grading and expectations in the class. Your grade is made up of two exams, checkpoint assignments that act as a quiz after each section, and written participation assignments. If you do the work and show up to lecture, you will do just fine. She cares about her students and always makes class fun.
She assigns 2 papers, 2 exams, participation assignments, and engagement activities. The class is set up for you to do well as she gives a lot of feedback on your papers and the exams have both MC and short answers. While class is pretty lecture-heavy and you need the textbook, she explains the concepts well and is available outside class.
Dr.Bergendahl is a great person and does care deeply about her students. She regularly makes conversation with students and she'll make you laugh. You won't be laughing when her tests hit your desk, though. Her tests and her study guides are so insanely hard. I'm a political science major and preparing for her tests made me want to rip my hair out.
Prof. Bergendahl gets a bad rap. Her exams are inflexible (you either know the answer or you don't), but that does not make her a bad professor. She is accessible, makes a list of everything that will be on the exams, and paying attention during lecture goes a long way. Course is time consuming, but you are here to learn. She's tough but very fair.
Prof Bergendahl gets a bad rap. She is tough but fair. She sets high expectations but makes them clear and easily attainable if you put in effort. She is also incredibly kind, caring, and a talented educator. All of this is *much* more than you can say for other "difficult" professors, who tend to be egotistical sociopaths. Highly recommend
Prof. Bergendahl is as traditional as it gets, meaning closed-book exams, lectures every class, and strict class policies. Taking notes based on the outlines she gives you and studying everything on them is the key to doing well on exams. Fair and easy, if you put in the work. It helps if you are interested in the material as well.
Terrible professor. AVOID
I highly recommend taking a class with Dr Bergendahl. It is difficult and you have to put in the work, but it is very manageable as long as you're willing to try. She wants everyone to succeed and is very helpful. Overall really great class, difficult exams, and a good experience.
I've taken three classes with her and found that her lectures aren't effective in explaining concepts well. She is quite strict and exams are difficult, she also gives assignments that require a lot of work for few points. Attendance is mandatory but lectures are draining and uninsightful. She does remember each of her students so absence is noted.
The class did poorly on the first exam and instead of asking how she could better help us, she yelled at us and said it's all our faults. REFUSES to posts the slides as she would say she "unfortunately can't". doesn't let u keep the exam that U completed, and only lets u ask certain questions about it. worst prof ever. do better Kim.
Dr. Bergendahl is tough, but very fair. I did poorly on the first exam, but after attending office hours with both her and our TA, participating more in lectures, and using some of the study methods she provided, I was able to raise my grade significantly. Just put in the effort and you will be fine.
I usually never write these reviews but after taking Bergendahls class, I had to. I have went to her office hours, went to the TAs office hours and even got a tutor. I study for her exams the day we start new material and still am not getting above a 80 on these exams. By far this class has been my biggest regret and I should've dropped it.
Only class I have ever had to Pass/Fail. I was told by a peer in law school now that exams in law school are actually easier than hers. Expect to memorize specific justices who wrote specific opinions in specific cases and what exactly they said, as such details will be what the exams are based on. This class is my biggest regret ever.
Don't let these reviews scare you, Dr. Bergendahl is one the best professors I've ever had and I learned so much in her class. You need to be willing to put in the work but this class is rewarding and interesting. Plus she really cares about her students and will work with you.
Usually do not write reviews here, but please take note of Bergendahl. She is horrible at writing exams and the questions she puts are very poorly worded. She yells at the class for her poor performance, yet she fails to teach well. Really disappointed Kim.
More than halfway done with Con Law and Bergendhal has been one of, if not the best prof I have had at Uconn. She is a tough professor academically but is super nice. True, her exam questions are not always the most clear, but if you study the outline and participate in class it will help you and show on the exam. 100% would recommend her.
The class is difficult and requires studying everyday to get an A. She's a good teacher, just a ton of material. Don't take it if you already have a heavy semester. Also, she HAS yelled at the class, and gets mad and will show the entire lecture if you post a negative rate my prof.
Dr. Bergendahl is just what a college professor is: assigns readings, expects you to come to class prepared, and has exams that connect with the readings. People who have her as a professor seem to forget that they're enrolled in a college course. She's a fair professor and it's so worth it to take her!
Not the worst professor but also not the best. She is nice and caring but her exams are are the only negative part of this course. They are extremely difficult as the questions are phrased poorly. You can put in days and sometimes weeks of studying to receive a poor grade. Great person, wish she could reconsider her exam styles.
She is such an amazing woman and such a mind! Dr. Bergendahl actually cares for her students and her tests are exactly what she talks about in class and the readings you do, too. I'm not saying you can get by by only doing the readings and going to class, you certainly can't, you just need to dedicate the time to study, too. It's a genuine course.
I did not learn as much as I could have. There were three books required for the course that were virtually useless, and I ended up teaching myself. At times is overly emotional (venting or yelling in class), and it made me and others uncomfortable in some moments. Overall, the course did not meet my expectations. Very tough grader!
Great professor, cares about students, and is a joy to talk to outside of/after class. Taught like a law school class, 70% btwn 3 exams, 30% cold call/handout. Bergendahl teaches the material well. Exams are fair but hard. Justifiably yelled at class once for people showing up late and holding up activity, wasn't directed at particular people.
The hardest class I have had at Uconn but also one of the most rewarding.
I really enjoyed having Bergendahl as a professor. She's very kind and responds to emails quickly. Somewhat of a harsh grader, so make sure you check in with her throughout the semester to get feedback. Would love to take another class with her.
Con law is tough, but you should expect that. It requires a lot of reading and memorization of court cases; however, I do think it truly prepares you for law school which a lot of people take this course for. Exams are hard, but Bergendahl gives adequate study guides that will will prepare you if you follow them. Prof wants her students to succeed.
