The class is incredibly difficult, even with how helpful she is. The review packets are great and give you lots of chances to practice problems that are very similar to what's on the exam - also posts solutions. For us, she's dropping one quiz and one exam. All the exams are written, no MC, except the final which was about 1/2 MC, 1/2 written
the class IS hard, but that orgo1 for yea. The text book is terrible, use kleins book and the second language book instead. Fields is and incredible teacher, she really wants you to understand. only thing that sucks.... her curve isn't to huge.
The best orgo professor at USF in terms of caring about how her students do on the test. Orgo is hard regardless, but she tries to make it as simple as possible. Her review packets before the exam are key. Just do those and understand everything on there and you will do fine. Reading is a must, but its orgo so I wouldn't expect less.
Read the text SLOWLY and make mental notes (mnemonic devices are your friends). Study the review packets religiously. Fields is an exceptional professor who is the most dedicated instructor I have had at USF. Her effective and enjoyable teaching style left me giddy and excited for more chemistry classes!
best organic teacher to take she is very enthusiastic. Read chapters and be able to comprehend all concepts on the review packet. good teacher for organic chemistry
Great teacher. Really helpful and genuinely wants you to do good in the class. went to office hours, and studied the review packet and got an A-. Orgo is a hard class in general but she is a fantastic teacher.
Horrible teacher ....made jokes and did not clarify what was going to be on the exam..study packets looked nothing like exam and i never missed a class. She was useless even in office hours
First she uses a sharpie to write on a piece of paper. I don't really under stand why she does that. There is a whole whiteboard in front of her. Maybe pencil does not stick out. Second she is a horrible teacher. Organic requires a lot of understanding of reactions like hows and whys instead she just expects you to figure stuff out on your own.
She is useless. Does not teach. Makes jokes for elementary kids but the class still laughs. Her review packets do not teach you anything. If you want to suceed in this class and actually learn take another teacher
I have only good things to say about Dr Fields. She's engaging, funny, very clear on what she expects out of students, and willing to help them get there. Organic chemistry is extremely challenging, and Dr Fields is extraordinarily supportive in helping students rise to that challenge. Get the David Klein supplemental books.
Dr. Fields has unrealistic expectations of her students. ACS final, which is unbelievably hard, and worth 24% of your grade, 4 regular exams, 10 quizzes, and wiley hw. Her review packets are 20+ pages long, and half of it won't show up on the exam. First day of class you'll say, oh she seems so nice! After exam 2 you'll think differently. DONT TAKE
This class is basic and simple throughout the semester. It is clear she streamlines the class and leaves out an abundance of moderately difficult material. This catches up to you when taking any ACS or standardized exam. She is nice, she is dedicated, but not a solid choice for understanding Orgo beyond a basic memorization of simple reagents.
Worst professor. doesn't understand that as students in a class of this magnitude and instead humors the unnecessary questions and makes childish jokes. Really bad. Take literally anyone else seeing as shes the only one who refused to curve her course.
If you like your grade to 90% tests. (24% mandatory ACS final, and 66% of your best 3 out of 4 test grades) then take Dr. Fields. Otherwise if you are a normal human who needs some buffer with HW etc. for an already extremely difficult course take ANY OTHER PROFESSOR!
Is ineffective and disorganized when it comes to teaching. Her expectations of her students are unrealistic and she gives little to no curve even when she sees we are all failing. She is very stubborn with giving points and is not good admitting when she's failed at teaching material. She needs to care more about her students.
Don't take any class with her. For the love of God, don't do it. You will be miserable every day of the semester. Kim will go out of her way to make sure your experience in Orgo 2 is the worst few months of your life.
So in Field's class you can have an average of 90 on all the exams, score in the 90th percentile on the ACS final, have an 80% on the quizzes, and a 105% in hw and still not get an A. Take somebody else so you get the grade you deserve.
I'm not sure how it's possible that the person below me didn't get an A, because Dr. Fields follows a grading rubric that is very fair. Also, I don't know why people complain about her. She is the most caring teacher I've ever had. She loves teaching and loves Chemistry. Do her study guides, they are exactly like her tests, and you'll do fine.
Orgo II isn't easy PERIOD-I worked hard and learned lots for my A! Scan txt B4 class. Handwritten notes were ez to follow. Review packs (LONG) helped me to drill rxns for the exams. Klein rocked! ACS Final was tough-like GenChem. Dropping lowest exam, quiz, Wiley Qs, 5Q on final, and 60=C=pass is a big curve! Drop 2 more ACS Q = A+ 4 me tho:P
Dr. Fields is prehaps thee best professor I've had at USF thus far. She is dedicated to to her field but more importantly to her kids. Her email responses are timely and she also tries her best to assist kids after class. Trust me when I say that her exams are easy in comparison to others like Antilla. Do her reviews 50x if you have to.
I personally thought Fields was a great Organic professor. She is pretty goofy but she keeps lectures interesting. The ACS final she gives at the end definitely wasn't my favorite seeing as its cumulative. After having to drop orgo 2 in the fall and retake it with her I saw a huge difference in how well I was understanding the material.
Great professor. Simple, Orgo is not easy. Do her packet 4-5 times and you should be fine. For the ACS final, get the guide and I did twice. I recommend study groups. My HW was like 80%, quizzes ~60% yet I still got an A-. So A is achievable, but YOU NEED TO PRACTICE. She's down to earth and will answer all your questions.
Not a very good professor. You have to email her several times before she will respond back to you. Doesn't curve any test. The tests are much harder than previous years, and she isn't that helpful. I wouldn't recommend taking her.. ever..
Her prac. tests do not help. Her T.A's are not helpful. Her class is taught easily but her tests are ridiculous and not like lecture.
She wastes class time on things not related to chemistry and then rushes through lecture, tests are much harder than practice tests, and have no curve. Would not recommend taking.
Tests are difficult and long. She sometimes pushes lecture time about 10 mins after class. Sometimes tests are two weeks apart from one another. HW and clicker points help. She's kind and funny. Her grading scale is fluffed; 60% is a C; no curve. Orgo is hard, as her tests are, but she tries her best to be helpful and keep things interesting
In my personal opinion, Dr. Fields is a great professor. With orgo you have to put in at least 20 hours of studying a week (at least for me). The practice test helped out a lot, as long as you know that they are supplemental and NOT identical. If you do you're homework, never miss a class, and study ALOT, you'll be fine.
Great professor. Paves the way to an A, all you have to do is listen, take good notes, and practice (at least 20 hours a week). Learn all of the mechanisms, even if she says you don't have to (most important). Do all of these, and you should receive an A.
I found Fields to be a great professor for Organic. She is very willing to help and makes the material easier to understand. With Fields I ended the course with a B.She provides more than enough workshops, homework, and practice exams to be able to gauge how the exams will go. There is also a decent curve on the overall course.I highly recommend her.
THE most difficult teacher. I worked really hard for my A. It is easy to get a B or a C or even an A- in her class but to get an A is nearly impossible.
Orgo is tough compared to GC. I wish there was more curve! Grade is 90% exams, but that's typical. Went to office hours, she was real helpful. Spent time to explain questions and provided examples until I understood. Go if you need help! Workshops are great for practice! REALLY wish I had more for Orgo II this term!:( Gonna miss her!
Dr. Fields is a great O-chem professor. You will have to work extremely hard, especially if you want to get an A. There will be times where that doesn't seem possible, but do those workshops and know them like the back of your hand. Ask questions, talk to your TA, Study and prioritize your coursework, attend always and answer clickers always.
This class was not as hard as the horror stories I've heard from other students. It isn't easy, but it is do-able. Don't skip or cram 4 exams; the course picks up about halfway through the semester; falling behind is bad news. When you do a reaction, little arrows need to be flying around in your head each time; simple memorization will backfire!
Dr. Fields is the BEST! Go to her office hours, she really puts in the effort there. Study hard, commit yourself to Second Language, and you will succeed. Good luck ya'll. You're gonna love this class
Professor Fields is a nice and upbeat person but she is not so nice when it comes to tests. All the other chemistry professors curved their tests but she refused to even though the class average each test was a 60 or lower. I would suggest taking Gen Chem 1 with a professor who curves because the tests have gotten more difficult each semester.
LOVED this teacher! She was very upbeat and expects a lot out of her students to study outside of class and be able to do practice problems. The teacher isn't the one that is bad, it's the students who don't try outside of class. The class is intense, don't think you are just going to get an A without hard work.
She is so quirky and odd, but I loved it! Most professors will just drone on about whatever, but she makes lecture fun by adding weird things like songs (O Quantum Tree, for example). She explained things very clearly too, and I highly recommend her as a professor. Lots of clicker questions, but they aren't too bad. Textbook helps too!
I do not like her as a teacher. She's very strange and her jokes are unfortunately embarrassing since she's the only one laughing. She is very excited about chemistry though, and I'd rather have her than some of the other super boring monotone chem teachers, but I don't think she was a great teacher..
Took her spring. If you're a visual learner like me, take her!! She used balloons to show & explain the geometry of atoms. She tries to use jokes or put it in simpler terms that way we get it. Sometimes the jokes may not be funny, but seeing her laugh and be so enthusiastic about the subject is pretty contagious. Great, kind, & helpful professor!
Don't be fooled by her cheerful attitude and excitement for the subject, this professor is not going to help you out in anyway whatsoever. Your best option will be to review the past tests like crazy and even then they are often misleading (the final practice exam was COMPLETELY different from the actual test we took. Avoid if possible.
Unclear professor she skips ahead while everyone is lost in class. Her tests are tricky and very difficult. She expects more than possible out of her students.
One of the most difficult classes to take at USF and she didn't do much to help; she'll help during office hours but most of what you get out of her class will be relearning the material at home... Her lectures are unclear and often very confusing, tests are nearly impossible.
Dr. Fields is a really enthusiastic teacher, hard to find one like her. Going to office hours helped me so incredibly much, she is extremely willing to help and very kind. You have to do the practice tests and read orgo as a second language to do well. I think the only reason people find it hard is because they don't study enough or pay attention.
I am currently taking Fields right now. I started off enjoying her lectures but as the material got harder, her explanations became more unclear. She tries to be funny and she has a nice personality but as a professor, I would not recommend her. Her teaching methods leave you confused. You will spend A LOT of time outside of class teaching yourself
Do NOT let her easy going personality get in the way that she cannot teach. She's a really funny, quirky and silly lady which is fun but she contradicts herself the entire semester long. I took her class but went to Lewis' lecture because he knows that he's talking about.
welcome to hell should be the first line you read on her syllabus. In class the concept will look easy, but the test is very tricky. Her exam are like a laser that search for every little concept you forgot to master and before you know you have failed the exam. ORGANIC AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WILL BE YOUR BIBLE. may the grade be ever in your favor
Tests are straight forward but as the class gets harder they become unclear and drift off from what is actually taught in class making it nearly impossible to pass them without previous exposure to the material. Her lectures don't help much for the test but she is always wiling to help which is nice. The online homework is a pain and doesn't help.
Four exams with a drop. Her exams are similar to the study guide. Don't buy the book. 2nd language will be your bff. online HW due weekly 50-60 Q's that do not help much. To pass you need to branch out for help. LA Flame Never Dies. Final exam is cumulative.
I would not recommend this class to my worst enemy Fields contradicts herself so much that you will leave class more confused than when you walked in. she gives a lot of clicker points and they are easy but overall her teaching style is trash
If you are an "A" student, this teacher will bother you to no end. She leaves out tons of important information that is necessary for the test. She did not even finish all the material that was on the final exam. She is not prepared for class. In eight classes in a row she got stuck on a single math problem and wasted 45 minutes of each class.
If you want an A in chemistry do not take this teacher. She leaves out tons of important information that is on the test. She didn't even finish covering all the information that was on the final exam. She is not prepared for class and wastes tons of class time trying to figure out the equations she put on her powerpoints.
Dr. Fields is a good professor but her tests are hard. Even though she gives you previous exams to study, the tests are usually 100% different. It's not difficult to get a C but plan to work hard for a B-or better.
Had an A in the class, and then took the exam, which was DEATH. Tests are generally hard, but the subject matter itself is not SO hard to get. Won't be that funny to males, some females will laugh at her jokes. Lectures are clear, but synthesis problems are horrible. Reading some textbook will probably be necessary. Orgo 2 different with her.
Orgo is inherently hard and it only gets worse if you don't put in the effort to learn it. Memorization is not the key to the class. The amount of studying, reviewing, and practicing the material was pretty intimidating, but if you learn it early, then the rest of the class is easy. The textbook helped a lot too.
Dr. Fields is a good professor. While teaching she gives good information, and is very clear and specific. Though her tests don't cover all the material that you learn in class, which sometimes leads to wasted time studying. Overall a great professor though.
TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. She cannot teach orgo 2. Her tests are extremely hard, and people are always there until the last minute. There are random quizzes almost every discussion group so you have to go. A lot of people dropped.
Dr. Fields has the passion to teach this course, she around to help. I can't help but wonder whether she is purposefully weeding people out of her class. She will teach one in class and test on another. If I had to do it again, I would have taken another professor. The materails are not tough, but she purposefully try to trip up her student.
Whoever said that she can't teach Orgo 2 is wrong; she taught it incredibly well. She's got a great sense of humour and has very clear notes. She goes over every reaction mechanism that might be on the test, and it's not her fault that Orgo 2 just naturally has a lot in it. If you think there were tricks, then blame Nature for being tricky.
Dr. Fields was probably the best chemistry teach I've ever had at USF. I took her for Orgo 1 and 2 and did well in both. You need to put in a lot of work to do well. Incredibly easy to pull a A-B+ but hard to get the A. You will learn a lot, and if you get an A she'll likely write a good recommendation letter.
Dr. Fields is a wonderful professor. She posted old test and tons of practice questions which made preparing for the test easy. She gives some extra credit on the exams about 5 points on each test. Her lectures are hilarious and she doesnt mind going over stuff from Orgo 1 if you ask which was helpful since I had a lackluster professor for Orgo 1.
Tests are hard and I knew that going in.
I took CHM2045 at USF for the summer as a transient student. Prof Fields is hands down one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of being taught by. Her final exam was difficult, but all of her tests were fair. I wish she was a professor at my university!
I had the pleasure of taking Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 with Dr. Fields. Her lectures are very thorough, her notes are great, she is marathon happy to answer any questions, and she makes herself abundantly available for help. Her practice tests prepare you perfectly for her exams, so if you take the time to understand them thoroughly, you're fine.
I was successful in this class by preparing for lecture. Professor Fields cleared up anything I did not quite understand eith her creative lectures, amazing analogies, and helpful learning tools.
Would never take again. Worst professor I have had for science classes. Things are not explained very well. Tests are super hard as well so be prepared to teach yourself. Pass fail rate is horrible for orgo 2 so if you are looking to pass take someone else
I was dreading this professor based on the negative reviews. But I found Dr. Fields to be funny to make concepts stick. You must study on your own. She gives you old exams. If you put the effort in (20 hrs/wk, you'll do well. Don't underestimate the difficulty based on Dr. Fields making it look easy. She prepares you the best for the ACS final.
Tests are hard, but if you do the practice tests and memorize mechanisms on the notes, you will be able to get an A. She is there for you when you need help and works her ass off. Orgo I is way easier with her than Orgo II. She uses clickers, but tells you the answers to all the questions.
Dr. Fields is amazing! She is very active and funny throughout her lecture. Her tests are not that hard if you put in the work. Would really like to take her again for Orgo II but unfortunately she is not teaching for Spring 2016. Clicker is pretty much free points. Her homework are fair but tedious.
Orgo in general is a tough class, but fields is really passionate about the subject which makes the class bearable. She's always willing to help her students, would definitely take her again!
Although professor Fields is very nice and entertaining in class, her tests are extremely difficult. Her tests are tricky and require tons of studying. Online homework is due almost every other week with at least 60 problems. Despite everything, if you study hard and prepare for her exams, you will pass.
Dr. Fields is pretty good at explaining things, but she does so with very little time left before the exams. Clickers are mandatory and you need the extra grade boosts with how hard her exams are. The first two exams are pretty easy, but the last two will kill your grade. Save your one exam drop for one of the last two exams.
Dr. Fields is probably one of the best professors for organic chemistry. She is funny and very helpful, especially if you go to her office hours! Her exams are just like her practice exams, so if you study those you'll do great! Overall, she is a great professor!
Dr. Fields is fun and quirky but she is an awful teacher and you will fail. I had to learn almost the entire class on my own.. She covers too much unnecessary material in the limited amount of time that is given so students are expected to learn entirely on their own. She goes too fast during lectures and they are not explained thoroughly.
Had an A that went down to a B+ take my advice if you are great with keeping up with material, first two exams should be fine but exams 3 and 4 will really challenge you, one of these will definitely be your drop. Her teaching is great and fun, but the tests are no joke, Tests 1 and 2 are fine, 3 and 4 tough. Consistently has 4 exams per semester
the most amazing organic professor at USF. Dont listen to anyone that tells you not to take her. She helps you know orgo inside out. Tests are just like the prac. exams, just keep up with her notes. Its doable to get an A+, but takes a lot a practice. very helpful, drops a test, gives ex. credit. Go to class, dont miss out on her amazing lectures!
So many corny jokes but makes material very easy to remember. Tests can be unpredictable but she has given a very modest curve.
Best Professor I've had. Take the Exam Reviews seriously and pay attention.
Dr. Fields is fantastic. Really cares about her students and wants you to do well, but doesn't hand out A's easily. You need to really work for it but she's happy to give you all the help and resources you need to do so. Hilarious. Made sitting through a long lecture worth it because she kept you entertained. Wish she was teaching orgo 2!
Honestly the first couple days I thought she was a great professor. Then as the semester went on, I noticed my grades dropping. I was spending an excessive amount of time reading the book, instead of just looking at the notes. Just read the notes she gives. That's what the tests are based on. Great Professor.
Fields was a great professor. She explained the material very well. Some of her tests are super hard and almost everyone doesn't do well on them, but she does offer a ton of extra credit opportunities. Weekly quizzes in discussion that can definitely help your grade. Show up, pay attention, study really hard, and you'll do well.
Dr. Fields is an amazing professor! But keep in mind that that doesn't always mean the class is going to be a breeze. She teaches really well for sure, but Orgo is a course in which you HAVE to ALWAYS work hard to get a good grade. And Dr. Fields definitely makes Orgo easier to study. She provides more than enough study resources.
Dr. Fields is a professor that cares for her students tremendously. I will admit that she is tough with her exams but you will leave organic chemistry KNOWING the material. If you want to go to med school, TAKE HER CLASS. She will challenge you just like med schools will. If you can't perform in this class... Sips tea
I was scared of Fields because everyone said she was hard. I got an A+ in the class, she is the most helpful professor I've ever had. She's always willing to help, and she writes out notes in class with you. She gives plenty of practice exams that are just like the actual tests. The homework is tedious, and you do have to work to get a good grade.
She is funny but its super diificult
Dr. Fields is always willing to help you. Although her tests may be tough, she really prepares you for upper level classes in the sense that she tests you on application, not memorization. She is easily one of the best professors in the chemistry department. I would say the only negative thing would be her responsiveness on emails.
I really appreciated Dr. Fields' style of teaching, because she went over reactions step by step showing the mechanism & explaining everything clearly. The exams might be tough, but it really prepared me for the ACS final. You might not appreciate her teaching now, but you will once you get to orgo II (I wish she taught that).
She's very funny in the classroom, but tests are ridiculously hard, and she doesn't explain things really well. If you take her, be prepared to learn everything by yourself.
Everything she teaches in class is extremely basic but then when you get the exams.. its another level of difficulty. She's cool but in order to pass you're going to have to study yourself. Insane amount of homework & the worksheets are ridiculously long... Unless you enjoy or are good at chemistry, I would avoid her for our own benefit.
AVOID. Worst professor, her exams are written as if she thinks her students are grad students in chemistry. SUPER HARD. Seriously an A is not going to be easy..
Don't ever take this class. I am an A student and I barely passed. I am holding on to a low C and in the processes of possibly failing due to the exams. The exams are the hardest I have ever taken for any science classes. None are multiple choice and there's so much material she covers it's impossible to pass. Expect half your class to drop as well
The class itself is meant to be hard considering all the memorization needed for mechanisms and nomenclature. However, Fields does her best to simplify the subject matter but she makes it look easy because she knows what to do. You need to practice to be as good as her and doing the practice exams helps a lot! An A is not impossible! Reapwhatyousow
She is a great teacher. I had her for Organic Chemistry 1, which is naturally already a tough course. Her tests are CRAZY hard, but they are doable with enough practice. She gives workshops that are very helpful. I plan on taking her for Orgo 2. If you take her, get ready to WORK!
To do well, you must keep up with the pace of the class. Do wileyplus homework, do the workshops, and use the quizzes as indicators of your progress. I didn't find her lectures to be helpful, I stopped paying attention and just did chapter outlines from the book. This class is a significant time investment, so plan accordingly.
By far the hardest class I've ever taken but it was worth taking Dr. Fields. It is a learning curve every week. Attend lecture, take notes, go over the workshops, go over the practice tests, and don't be afraid to ask for help. She gives you multiple resources for her students. Take time to study every week and you'll pass.
Great professor. Orgo I is not difficult, you just have to put the time in. Just put in 30 minutes before each lecture into studying and maybe an hour or two over the weekend and you'll get an A. Such a great professor I'm taking her for Orgo II
For me, I did not find the class easy or Fields a good professor. There is lots of extra credit that will save your grade. For some people this class is a breeze but for me, this class was the source for all frustration, anxiety, anger and bitterness in my life. Professor Fields teaching style didn't work for me but it does for other people.
Hardest. Class. Ever. Organic chemistry is already THE difficult class in college, but Fields's tests were insanely difficult. She gives u access to the past exams that I studied and practiced off of, but the tests were still really difficult to pass. She has a lot of energy in her lectures and she gives you little quirky tips to help you remember
I came out of this class feeling like I really learned orgo. Her exams are not easy, and she likes to trick you. I treated this class like a full time job and studied about 10 hrs a week. If you study from her notes, do the workshops and practice exams youll definitely get a B. Always show more work than you think you should on her exams.
Go to class take notes. Will it confuse you? yes but thoes clicker points are worth it. And while your there taking notes won't hurt. She uses a lot of similar questions to her practice exams. The second test is the hardest the last two are more of memorization. Get your hands on organic chemistry as a second language its so helpful.
She's super sweet and caring. Also very funny. The class itself does take a lot of work but its not that bad. She usually throws some tricky stuff on her tests. There's a lot of homework but its better to work with multiple people. Do the extra credit on the homework because it helps your grade. A lot of people ignore it.
She is the best organic chemistry teacher. She gives you practice tests that are somewhat similar to the test. Do all the practice exams. You have lots of HW problems, a mechanism paper (if done with time, it is easy), and iclicker questions (tells you the answer). She drops one exam out 4 exams. If you put time to practice, you do well.
She really is not a good professor. Her lectures are mad confusing and she thinks everything is a joke. Her worksheets are way too long just like her exams and homework. AVOID
She is the worst teacher. She teaches the class like its some joke. She makes way too many jokes and nothing is funny. I just wish she would have taught normally minus all the unnecessary jokes. The test are extremely hard and long as well as the homework was a waste of time.
Her exams are mad hard and there is a lot of things to do in this class. The homework is insane and you have useless project to do as well in the semester. She's not that great so I would suggest finding someone else.
Organic is hard, but if you read prior to lecture and do practice problems, you should be fine on exams. However, I did not like her as the professor. Her lectures are very confusing. She goes off topic and makes the class as a joke.
i had her for orgo 1 and 2, only 2 people were teaching it and the other class was full. i hated her. she goes over things really fast and doesnt explain things well. her test are always super hard and fill in the blank. she gives HUGE amount of hw, which is never helpful and we will have a test on friday yet she still gives us a quiz in discussion
I do not recommend taking this professor. Lectures are not as clear as they should be and her tests are overly and unnecessarily hard. Do yourself a favor and avoid taking her.
I had a disgusting time in this class. She is okay in class but her exams are incredibly hard. You have to be an organic chemist to be able to answer some of her questions. She always throws a lot of curve balls in tests and you never know what to expect.
I had taken her for Orgo I, Idk why I thought Orgo II would be better with her. She is literally all over the place. She writes out the reactions in class at the speed of light. Her notes online confuse you more than the book. Her practice exams are generally full with errors- so you don't know the right ansr. Curved grading scale. Test hard as fk
Took her for Orgo 1 and loved her honestly confused as to what happened in Orgo 2. Exams are SUPER hard, she expects you to have mastered all of Orgo by lecture and goes through everything super fast.
I enjoy how excited she gets about chemistry but I do not think she is a good teacher. She does not break down things well enough and goes through lecture so fast. I do not like her teaching technique for orgo, where she writes her notes on paper then projects them. It get sloppy and unorganized.
Teaches faster than most can understand. Makes jokes in class rather than making sure the students understand the material. Makes mistakes all the time in class. Makes mistakes on her worksheets and practice exams. Only way to get a decent grade on test if you've already taken this course. Average on most test are 50% but curved heavily. Avoid.
Professor Fields made an already difficult subject much more difficult with her constant jokes in class and jumping around questions asked during lecture. There is no wonder why she is on academic probation because her teaching skills are worse than that of a public high school chemistry teacher. She made me contemplate changing my major many times
Professor Fields takes simple concepts and makes them difficult DO NOT TAKE. Her constant joking in class is funny at first but quickly gets annoying as you realize you are failing every test. Only thing that saved me was the modified grading scale.
I took Dr. Fields for orgo I as well, and struggled, but she was the "better" choice for this semester. Fields is very knowledgeable about orgo, but lacks in explaining so others can understand. Examples in notes are too easy compared to the beast exams she gives. Too much homework; she thinks her class is the only class you have.
Orgo is hard, accept it. Field's doesn't sugar-coat it. Her exams are hard and there is a lot of homework but I have gotten A+ with her for Orgo I and II. Listen in lectures, go to her office hours/tutoring sessions (she literally has them every day) she wants to help. Put in time and effort and you are guaranteed success and a great letter of rec
Organic is arguably the hardest class an undergrad student will have to take. That being said, Fields is one of the worst profs I have had. She is a great person and is caring, however, I would rather have someone who is a great teacher. You must utilize every resource to get the A, especially orgo as a 2nd language.
I got an A+ in Orgo 1 and an A in Orgo 2. If you take her you will end up taking the ACS. My recommendation is to understand Orgo 1 super well, and you will do well on both Orgo 1 ACS and Orgo 2 ACS. My biggest piece of advice though? Go to lecture and use Clutch for Orgo 1. Realllyyy go to lecture for Orgo 2 and you'll be good. Put in the effort.
In a nutshell, Fields is amazing. It's easy to get frustrated with her because Orgo can be a difficult subject, but her course is really fair. Had her for Orgo 1 and 2, got an A+ in both. In my experience, she went ABOVE and beyond to make herself available for students. She wants you to do well. Also, she offers a plethora of extra credit.
She does care about her students but her tests can be challenging and not exactly like what you study. But focus on the practice exams and attend lectures she will definitely mention certain things and emphasize points that will be on the test. Do the homework! There is a lot but just do it.
If you can take her for Orgo. She teaches really well, got an A+ in orgo 2 with her, while I struggled for a B+ in orgo 1 with Raker. Gives lots of opportunity for extra points- do the EC because it really adds up! Makes lecture exciting and engaging. Favorite science teacher so far at USF. Teaches well, patient and kind.
I had her for Organic Chem 1 and 2. She has clear instructions on how to get an A and if you put in the time it is attainable. She gives good feedback and you can get help from her TAs all the time. She gives a lot of extra credit, but again, you have to be able to put the time in. It's a hard subject but she tries her best to make it entertaining.
Took her for both orgo 1+2 & received an A+ in both. Great lecturer (especially if you're a fan of lame jokes) & cares about the students. Gives previous exams out for students to study so you almost always know what to expect. HW can be time consuming so pace yourself. Her weekly workshop packets help a ton. Lots of extra credit ops.
I got an A+ in her class but I 100% would not recommend her to a friend. She's a decent lecturer as far as orgo professors go, but her class set up is ridiculous. She assigns way too much homework and her tests are full of stupid trick questions. if you do have her get ready to devote your life to doing orgo busy work. (get orgo as a 2nd language)
The test and the class are extremely hard. The test are 8 pages long and be prepared to do around 100 problems a week or more. Orgo is hard, but i feel that she makes it harder.
Gives practice tests-answers not accurate+test10x harder. Notes have to be copied, she makes mistakes alot+goes extremely fast. I've failed Orgo 1+2 w/her.
Tests are mainly concerned with the exceptions to any rules. Ex. In class used Carbon for weeks, tested on exclusively Nitrogen. Incredibly frustrating class. Barely any partial credit given. HORRIBLE TEACHER! The ONLY way to pass this class is to do ALL the previous years' exams REPEATEDLY. Think she's funny. She's not. I got a B on drive alone.
I went to every lecture and thought I'd be fine. The first exam told me otherwise. I ended up dropping after the third exam. If you get stuck with her, I recommend just sitting in Dr. Cruz's lectures and take notes. Her exams include acrobatic stuff, but if you know as much as possible from Cruz, you should still pull off an A.
By far, the hardest class. I have taken in college. Her teaching doesn't make Orgo any easier. I tried to be optimistic and stayed in her class after withdrawal period. Now, I'm realizing I should have withdrawn. We literally had an exam with an average of 38%. If that doesn't show what type of professor she is, I don't know what does. Goodluck
Easily the hardest class I've ever taken, Organic chemistry is hard it's suppose to be hard, but she makes it unnecessarily hard. I recommend taking anyone but Fields for Ochem, and if you are stuck with her make sure you study a lot for the first 2 tests cause the third and fourth test are extremely hard, and she doesn't curve.
By far the worst teacher I've ever taken. Tests are extremely difficult and tricky. Even when the class average was around a 38%, she did not curve. Avoid at all cost.
Dr. Fields is a pretty good professor. She gives lots of practice exams that are very similar to the actual test. She also gives lots of extra credit, clicker questions, homework, and an easy project that really helps your grade. Was an easy A for me, highly recommended! She had low averages on some tests because she allows a drop test.
She is a great lecturer, however this does not matter because her examples in class are very basic and the questions on the exams are difficult, which makes it nearly impossible to be prepared
No curve, but has different grading scale (A-85, B-70, C- 55, D45, F<44.9). She is an okay lecturer, but gives stupid easy examples during class and tests you on difficult, sometimes multi-step problems. In order to succeed on tests focus on previous exams shes posts. Gives out stupid amounts of (Wiley) hw. Recommend prof: Cruz>Fields>Raker
At the beginning of the year, she stated you need to put the time and effort into this class to do how you want and even then I still failed. I bought extra study material and spend countless hours on this class. The example on in-class notes are cake compared to what the tests are. Her TA even critiques her ridiculous exams. Avoid her!!
Very good lecturer, however many of the problems in the lecture are very different than the test and exams with low averages such as the 4th exam having a mere 32% average and the final having a 56% average. Extra credit I spent about a total of 10 or so hours doing as it has over 400 problems total for the semester and raises me 4% which was good.
She is very knowledgable about organic chemistry. She cares alot about her students, however she gives easy examples in class and the exams have much harder questions. She gives out a TON of extra credit, drops a test, and grades on a curve so that is reason alone to take her. organic chemistry is a difficult subject no matter which prof you take
SHE IS A SAINT. No disrespect to the people discrediting her, but they probably didnt put in the effort that taking organic chemistry with ANY professor requires. She is super generous with grades, gives you all her old exams which mimic the tests to a tee, and she is super easy to contact in office hours. Take her. Best professor at USF.
The only good thing about her is her grading scale and the fact that she drops the lowest test grade. Besides that, her class is horrible!! We had to do a pointless literature project, she assigns a rediculous amount of hw and her tests are long and hard. She goes too fast in class so you either write notes or listen . I do not recommend her at all
Where do I even begin lol. No but seriously, a lot of people are being dramatic. Orgo is TOUGH, regardless of who youre taking. I got a C in Chem 2 and managed to get a B in this class and honestly, I believe I can pull out an A in Orgo 2 with her because of the grading scale and EC she gives. B: 70%-84.9 A: 85%- The practice exams are the KEY here
Do the H from wiley and as much EC that you can rack up you might need it at the end of the class. GO TO CLASS because you will not pass and to receive all the I-clicker points. The quizzes are passable if you study the notes from class . Generous curve. Practice tests are posted a week before the test STUDY THOSE, she just modifies questions.
Fields gives you everything you need to get an A. Do the weekly workshops, take the practice exams over and over again. Do the EC on Wiley, it provides a generous bonus. She gives a generous curve and drops your lowest quiz and lowest exam. Orgo is hard, but I've stuck with Fields for Orgo I and now have her for II
Do not recommend taking this professor! Avoid at all cost gives you practice exams and expected to be similar although it is 10x harder on test exam day. Lots of homework and short period of time gives extra credit but need to put lots in time. Practice hw and workshop until you nail if not you won't be able to pass this class.
Organic Chemistry is already an incredibly difficult class by itself, but when you add 60-75 multi step problems on a BS homework website(Wiley plus) and tests that are the hardest variant of every type of problem it makes it borderline impossible. Not to mention her humor in class is borderline distracting its so bad, shes a very nice person tho
I took her for Orgo 1 and 2 and received A's. The key to getting an A in her class: do the practice exams, DO THE WORKSHOPS!, do every extra credit (extra 4%), the paper at the end is an easy 100% for a test bump, look over your exams during TA sections to get points back for misgraded questions. Orgo is hard, just know it gets easier past it
You gonna buy a $200 program called Wiley and hate it beyond all recognition
Had her for both Orgo 1 & 2 and it was alright, Orgo 2 definitely kicked my ass more. Lots and Lots of online homework and quizzes every single friday even before exams. Exams are completely fill in the blank without synthesis word banks or anything of the sorts.
Dr. Fields has honestly been amazing. Organic chemistry is a difficult class as is, but Dr. Fields makes it very enjoyable. Sure there is work, but its organic chemistry, you have to put in some effort to do well. Go to class and go to office hours, those will be your best resources. Highly recommend taking Organic Chemistry with Dr. Fields
Gives you every chance to succeed, would definitely take again
Funny prof, with good lecture notes. Too much covered in one class. Tests were very difficult, even with a week of preparation. I also had to makeup an exam and it was ridiculous, she tried to make it as hard as possible. The makeup exam was cumulative and 105 questions in 1 hour and a half time period, compared to our 50 q final with 2 hr
She does the 'brain dump' style of lecture where she gives a lot of information in a short amount of time. PRACTICE EXAMS AND WORKSHOPS ARE IMPORTANT. Do the practice exams until you memorize the questions! Workshops are good for summarizing the concepts/reactions. Recommend splitting up Wiley HW with classmates as it is nice EC boost (4%).
Orgo is work, no matter which professor you have. Fields makes you REALLY work for it. Her tests are basically just 'here are reactants, give me product', 8 pages worth. Use her office hours and practice exams. The only reasons I would recommend would be the amount of EC she gives is a lot compared to other professors; almost a letter grade worth.
The best way to survive is EXTRA CREDIT. Clickers point, survey point, project and Wiley plus (up to 200) helps a lot. Splitting Wiley hw with friends, doing the workshop & practice exams. No procrastinating. Keep up with her lecture & watching YouTube video. First exam is hard, but itll be dropped. Keep going because its easier on the next ones.
Ochem is A LOT of work, regardless of your professor. Fields offers office hours 4x a week, sometimes staying until 10pm for her students. She offers ample extra credit and tells you ALL clicker answers (easy 4%). She truly does want you to pass. Yes, you must know the material - but that's what you sign up for with Ochem. I highly recommend.
Her lectures can be overwhelming because she just talks and writes out reactions the entire time. She tries to make it enjoyable with jokes and fun facts. Her humor takes awhile to get used to but you'll enjoy the class more if you just roll with it. The tests are hard but there is a lot of EC to compensate for that. Do as much EC as you can!
Crazy strict grader! Has no fondness of partial credit so if your answer is wrong... it's wrong period. Exams are long, maybe 4 credits mimic the practice test the rest don't at all. I don't recommend her other than the little bits of EC and the curve.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH FIELDS. It is UNNECESSARILY hard. I am NOT in med school, so there is no reason to teach this course like I am. There is way too much information shoved into one class period and she is ALWAYS at least 10 minutes late without fail. She talks about pointless things and speeds through the material. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Feilds has helped me get through this class by keeping me motivated to do my work. She however does not explain material as well as one would hope. Questions asked in lecture are answered in a generally, broad manner. Over she really is not a bad professor and she really help keep you motivated through lame jokes in lecture.
I wish she would spend less time on corny jokes and more time trying to explain the material. There wasn't a single day in lecture where I didn't hear people talking about how confused they were. Before tests, the library would be full of people who stayed until 3am. Also, judging by the layout of the canvas page, shes never used a computer before.
Makes her exams so UNNECESSARILY HARD. About 60-100 hw problems WEEKLY. Assigns a POINTLESS Science Lit. project around the time of FINALS. Although, she does offer a lot of extra credit opportunities and practice exams are always available. Her lectures are very rushed, PAY ATTENTION CAREFULLY or you'll end up lost. Not a bad professor, just HARD.
Dr. Fields is a good professor, but her style of teaching doesn't match everyone's learning style. She hand writes her notes during class, but scans it to canvas too. She uploads it online as well. Lots of extra credit assignments (but takes a LOT of time.) Tests are mostly like the old exams, really study those and how she tests her concepts
ORGO IS HARD REGARDLESS. Shes really not bad at all. She handwrites notes with u in class so u can actually follow along. If she doesnt cover something, it wont be on the exam. Do her practice exams! She gives so much EC, my final grade went from an 85 to a 93. Orgo is hard but getting an A is totally doable. Taking her again for orgo 2!
Fields genuinely cares about her students, but to do well you need to put in an insane amount of work. The extra credit she offers takes hours to do, but DO IT. It brought my grade up over 4 percent. The tests are tricky, but are closely related to her practice exams she posts. Clickers are given in class, but she makes sure everyone gets it right.
I would like to clear up some of the misconceptions about this professor. Dr. Fields is a tough grader, her exams are a bit challenging but she does give you ample opportunity to boost your grade. She is a good professor, she is just not good at teaching well while rushing the material. If you ask her outside of class she will help you understand.
Her class is hard but it's so easy to pass. I got an A+ and I only did well on one test (technically 2 but she 'accidentally' had the answer key on the hardest page of test 3) and the final and got an A+. She only tests on what she lectures, just beware the tuesday before since anything she mentions in passing WILL be on the exam for 10pts.
Excellent professor. Explains things in the most elementary way possible to make it easy to understand. Some people find her difficult, but I received a D the first time I took Organic 1 with Dr. Raker. She explained things much more explicitly and gives you a lot of opportunities for easy points and practice. I highly recommend taking her.
Avoid Fields and take Cruz if you can. You have to work extremely hard for this class as she makes it way harder than it needs to be. Compared her exams to Cruz' and it's not even close. She does give A LOT of extra credit and her grading scale helps (60 is C) but I spent hours on youtube because you dont learn much in lecture. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!
Her exams are extremely difficult. Do the homework and extra credit, trust me it will save your grade. If you ask her for help, she will drop everything and help you. She will stay with you as long as you need. Her class is hard but she is cares a lot about her students and if you are struggling, she will do everything she can to help you.
Organic Chemistry is not an easy subject, and Dr. Fields doesn't make it any easier. Exams can be rough despite hours of studying. She'll cram two chapters in the class before the exam and focuses on trivial information at times. The amount of Wiley homework is insane but definitely gives you a grade boost. Also, utilize the TAs!
Although Fields isn't the best lecturer, she gives you all the information and tools you need to study on your own. If you wait until the last minute to study, you're obviously going to get a bad grade. She gives a lot of extra credit, which did help. The Wiley homework is not helpful and I stopped doing it halfway through the semester.
She has been one of my favorite professors for a science class. She has a passion and love for chemistry and it shows through her lectures; she keeps it light with jokes and always has a great attitude. Writes her notes as students copy which I appreciate. STUDY THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND DO THE E.C. WILEY!!!
Her lecture style is very unorganized and she goes off on tangents a lot and then has to rush through actual important material. I would highly recommend utilizing the tutoring center if some concepts are not elaborated on in class. Although I was not a fan of her lecturing style, she did provide a lot of resources to do well in the course.
I had her for orgo 1 and got an A, I thought she wasn't so bad until I got to orgo 2. It's not even that the material is too difficult, it's the way she teaches it. It is very unorganized, she doesn't provide background so it is very confusing. On top of that, her tests are ridiculously hard. I ended up with a B Idek how. Definitely avoid .
I took her for Orgo 1 and Orgo 2 and my only word of advice is DO AS MUCH WILEY AS POSSIBLE. You can fail every test and as long as you did the homework you can still pass her class. She cares about her students and wants to see them succeed.
I had Fields for both Orgo 1 and Orgo 2. I think that she is a great professor and cares about her students. Orgo is a difficult class no matter which professor you have. One thing I recommend is to do all of the Wiley you can because it can boost your final grade significantly. Also, attend the review sessions the day before exams, they do help!
I had Dr. Cruz for orgo 1 and i was scared to take her for orgo 2 but it was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. I HIGHLY recommend you do ALL the wiley HWs and extracredit she assigns, its useless for the exam but boosts your overall grade 8%. Doing her workshops helped me for her exams. Do clutch prep if you can it helps with the material.
Work hard in this class bc it's orgo. Ignore when people say she assigns a lot of homework, Wiley can suck but the extra credit is practically broken and if you do the problems you boost your grade and can test your theories on the material. She will stay until 2 am if you need her help, and is one of the most caring and brilliant teacher for orgo.
Seems nice until she belittles students for struggling. Lectures are unorganized at best, makes cute jokes to remember important material but never clarifies what she's actually talking about. Not helpful outside of class, incredibly rude during emails, and gives endless homework. This year orgo was standardized and she didn't adapt to help anyone.
She cannot teach at all. I would avoid her at all cost if you actually want to learn organic chemistry. If you do not need Organic Chem 2 take it with her but expect to teach yourself most of the time. Her notes are awful and I never look at them ever. Whenever a question is asked she makes the person feel like they are stupid.
Dr. Fields is a perfect example of being smart not equating to being a good professor. Her notes were all over the place, and she would spend time teaching materials not even on the exams. The course itself is already difficult, but having to teach yourself because of an incompetent professor makes it that much worse. Save yourself & take Dr. Cruz.
The most difficult professor you will encounter. The tests are graded harshly and are not multiple choice, her lectures often contain useless information that isn't tested on and she will focus on one topic in depth and neglect other imperative information. Be ready to teach yourself outside of lecture, do the practice exams and Wiley HW!!!
This was the worst experience I have ever had as a student. Fields made everything much more confusing compared to other professors who taught orgo. She may be very intelligent, but that does not mean she is qualified to teach. If I could rate her a 0 I would, but the minimum on here is a 1. I do not recommend her to anyone and wish I withdrew.
Dr. Fields is a very nice woman, dont get me wrong. But she cannot teach to save her life. She focuses more on being a comedian the entire class which really takes away from students trying to understand the material. She does try very hard to teach but her explanations are not very helpful. If you have the option, choose another professor.
Dr Fields is probably the most enthusiastic and caring professor I have ever had. Orgo is a tough subject and I had her for 1 and 2. She puts so much of her own time and energy into making extra problems available. I have observed her stay in class answering student questions till 11 pm or later after teaching three classes in a row with no breaks.
I was hesitant to take this class with Dr. Fields, but it has turned out to be a great experience. She really cares about the success of her students and is extremely passionate about organic chemistry. Her lectures are definitely an acquired taste though and it is recommended to do some pre reading before class to get the most out of the lectures.
If I could give her zero I would, but I can't her only redeeming quality is the funny comics she would occasionally post. I'm sorry to say it but her lectures are a mess and not engaging at all. I did well in Orgo 1 but Orgo 2 with her was literally my personal hell with her as Satan. You have to learn everything yourself because lecture useless
Fields is very nice, however she becomes patronizing and is insensitive at times. The class average will be a 65 and will cheer about it, despite how students feel about it. She tries to relate the material to some pop culture reference but instead goes off on a tangent. Honestly Clutch Prep got me through this class better than she did.
She is awful at teaching. She is unable to explain what she wants us to know & her Canvas page is an absolute mess; you'd think she had never used a computer before. Her announcements are wordy and confusing, and she has a confusing, time consuming, meaningless project due at exam time. Wait a semester and take a different professor.
Dr. Fields is a good professor, tries to engage students w/jokes during lecture. However she goes off topic and focuses on showing us a mechanism that ends up not being on the exam . (though she means well and wants us to know the point behind it). Having orgo online right now is extremely difficult with her as well as a project during exam time.
This is the worst class ive ever taken. In CHM2210 i received an A+. Before the pandemic i had to resort to going to another prof lectures just to learn. She is awful, youre gonna teach yourself. Middle of a pandemic and she finds just about anything to make this class 10x harder. Her avg are horrible but she raves about them. Stay clear of her!
She has no clue what she's doing. Most people end up going to the other profs class for lectures bc she can't explain things if her life depended on it! It's never clear what she expects from us, and in the midst of a pandemic she has made the class 100x harder. Didn't like her before the pandemic, def don't like her after.
Dr. Fields has made orgo extremely hard especially in the middle of a pandemic ,when school is a hard priority. She has made this class 10x harder than it needed to be with no sympathy or grace of what any of her individual students are going through right now. Hoping to pass so I can never deal with orgo again smh.
Fields is fair. I took her for Orgo 1 and 2. Orgo is hard in itself, expect to work no matter who you take. Fields is the best option IMO because of all of the extra credit, which can bring your letter grade up by 5%. She has one project in Orgo 2, which is graded on effort, and her tests are doable. Get to studying ASAP! Orgo requires WORK.
Commend her efforts during these difficult times, but she made things far more stressful and difficult than necessary. Only saving grace is the extra credit! Does her best to explain things, she is very confusing. Exams are nothing like the review sheets. Plus answer keys will often have incorrect answers on them.
Get ready to STUDY! Organic chemistry is a difficult class as it is, but she doesnt do much to make it easier. Her review sheets do not prepare you for her exams either so your best bet is to study from the textbook or other sources and do the extra credit!
Her exams are extremely difficult and unpredictable, lacking resemblance to the style of questions presented in practice exams, worksheets, or the textbook. She's really nice in person, but her lectures are dull and her notes are disorganized/confusing. If you end up taking her, do all the extra credit, it helps you a lot (roughly 5% boost).
I had Fields for Orgo 1 and 2 and I received an A+ in both. She's a teacher that cares if her students are learning, not just passing. That means something to me. Sooo much extra practice was available from extra worksheets, extra credit, and a ton of suggested textbook problems. If you didn't succeed in this class that has nothing to do with her.
I was worried after hearing reviews about Dr. Feilds, but taking Orgo 2 with her was the best decision I made. This class is hard. You just have to put in the time to study, but she gives so much extra credit that it really helps your grade. She tries her hardest to make this class engaging, but just make sure to study a lot in your own time.
I have never came across a professor that cares so much about his/her students like Dr. Fields. She always posts weekly announcements that cover up everything from what is due to technical errors on an online assignment. She has an extremely positive attitude and shows so much enthusiasm during lectures. Gives a lot of opportunities for an A.
Anyone who leaves bad reviews on Fields, didn't go to office hours. she isn't a good lecture giver, but if you go to her office hours she will stay until the very last person leaves even if her office hours were over. I'm shocked at everyone saying she made it harder during the pandemic, she gave so much extra credit and 2nd attempts on the tests.
Although the subject is hard, Dr. Fields genuinely cares about the well being of her students. She understands how difficult orgo is to fully grasp so it helps knowing that she has been exactly where we were at one point. 10/10 would take her class again.
Okay. So Dr. Fields is a sweet lady, but her lectures are confusing and not really helpful. If you only have the option of taking Fields, I would recommend going to TA office hours and lots of youtube videos. The tests are difficult. BUT she does give extra credit so do those!!! I was going to have a C- in the class without the extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY DURING A PANDEMIC. Dr. Fields is a very sweet lady and does everything in her power to help her students. During the pandemic, her and Cruz teamed up to run Orgo 1, which was helpful, but the exams were ridiculous and you couldn't go back to a question once you clicked next. Weekly quizzes, 4 exams, and a final.
Dont take orgo 1 online, for some reason they made it harder on students, we had weekly quizzes and the exams were harder and no going back on questions after you submit. Comparing it before it went online, those past exams were a joke compared to what we had to endure. This class is no joke, study hard and youll get your desired grade...
love my homegirl kimmy! on jah would take a bullet for this woman. Any other opinion is invalid.
Most understanding STEM professor, disagree wrong
Very good professor and actually cares about her students and teaching them. She is also very understanding and gave second chances multiple times when students needed it. Exams were pretty clear and not meant to trick you. Only thing is that you will have to set aside a lot of time for this class but its worth it for the grade.
I had her for both Orgo I and Orgo II. She is SUPER knowledgeable about the content and genuinely wants to help everyone learn and succeed. She is super nice and understanding, and doesn't make you feel stupid for not understanding or asking questions. Orgo is very hard, and you will have to work, but she is one of the best options you could get.
Dr Fields is a very caring, understanding professor and goes out of her way for her students benefit. Her lectures, while not overly engaging are clearly tailored to try to help students understand the material that is necessary. She is always accessible through online office hours on discord. Gave a lot of extra tries/ credit!
She is so passionate about Organic Chemistry and teaching it. She genuinely cares about her students and gives lots of opportunities to succeed. Her lecture videos may be lengthy and boring at times but if you practice the with the homework and worksheets, you'll do fine. She also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities!! She is the sweetest!
Dr. Fields is phenomenal and the most optimistic professor I have ever had. She will not give up on you no matter how long it takes you to understand a concept and she will explain it so many different ways until it clicks. She is so kind and understanding and no matter your grade you will finish having learned organic chemistry.
Guys, PLEASE take Dr. Fields! The class was flipped and I thought I would hate it, but I loved having her lectures always there. She went over tons of problems during class. Always responding to emails, discord etc. Worksheets for each week resembled quizzes, tons EC opportunity, she WANTS everyone to pass. Averages on exams were about 80%.
Dr. Field's cares so much about students I'm actually gonna miss having her for O chem! She was so accommodating when she was late to post lectures (she would keep the quizzes open the whole weekend) and when things happened during exams she would let everyone have a 2nd attempt. Hw is manageable, pay attention in class, do extra WILEY problems.
TAKE DR. FIELDS! She is so nice and caring and really wants to help her students. Her tests are not hard as long as you study and go to lecture. Anyone leaving bad comments didnt study enough or just doesnt understand chemistry.
At first I was apprehensive of taking a flipped class but I came enjoy it. The material was not bad. The HW, in class lectures, and ws were all very helpful. Dr. Fields is a caring professor and the class was very enjoyable.
Dr. fields was amazing. Orgo 2 was great with her and Im sad shell no longer be my professor anymore. Everything on the tests were things we were taught. She was extremely caring and understanding - especially with the pandemic. I feel blessed to have had her as my teacher.
Dr. Fields is the ABSOLUTE BEST PROFESSOR ever!! Organic chemistry II is challenging but she truly makes it fun and is so personable and kind. She is great at encouraging you to succeed and making you laugh. She is the sweetest lady ever, would 110% recommend her to anyone. Lots of extra credit to boost your grade percentage. Took class online.
Dr Fields is the most caring professor on the planet. She stays up til 2am or after for office hours just to make sure everyone understands. She is clear in all of her work and is a very fair teacher. I will miss organic chemistry because of her.
guys take Dr. Fields. she should have 5 stars on this site. I did all the practice, attended class, and studied to get an A+. She is fair and wants everyone to pass! I never thought I would miss orgo, but I will. Dr Fields made it my favorite subject. take her, you wont regret it. (she does EC too, weekly quizzes, and hw)
Dr. Fields is one of the nicest, understanding, and caring professors I've had. She truly cares about her students and wants them to do well. ORGO is difficult but she does her best to help with practices and making the exams somewhat fair. She also gave freebies and extra credit. Grades: group work, HW, clickers, quizzes, essay, exams, and final.
I have no idea why anyone would have anything bad to say about Dr. Fields. She helps give society's next organic chemists a superior foundation of carbon behavior. Understand electron behavior for mechanisms, know reagents practice Remember future chemist Electron rich(nucleophiles) attack electron deficient(electrophiles) Orbital changes.
Dr. Fields is a very bubbly individual but her method of teaching is not the most helpful sometimes. She used a flip classroom with organic chem 1 and it was very challenging to learn the information on your own. But, we do a lot of practice which helps a great deal. The material for the course is EXTREMELY lengthy which may be difficult .
Dr. Fields is very lovely in the sense of personality and her knowledge on the material. However, the flipped classroom style of teaching is a nightmare. The way this course is set up, if you're a slow learner like me, you hardly have time to learn the new material in between the exams.
Dr. Fields is a very nice and bubbly lady. However, I cant confidently say I learned anything in her class. She uses a flipped out classroom style- where you listen to lectures on your own time and then attend class only for clicker questions. Her lectures are very short and surface-level, but exams are very in-depth and fill in the blank.
I can honestly say I gave it my all in this course and I failed by only 2.4%. They expect you to learn this tough bulky material in the two weeks they give you between exams. Every exam average was an F or D and they were okay with that. You're better off taking this course at community college. This prof ruined my hope in the biomed major.
Dr. Fields is a nice person, but she honestly can not teach well. She somehow finds a way to make the topic more complicated then it needs to be. The only reason I got an A- in this class was because she posted Dr. Cruzs lectures. Also because of the TA I had. Both professors give the same extra credit, so just take Dr. Cruz instead.
If you're taking orgo 2 with Fields, you should be fine. However, if you are taking orgo 1 like I did, please consider taking it somewhere else. Her flipped learning style is terrible, and her practice questions in class did not help. The practice exams were nothing like the actual exams, and each exam we took had a completely different format.
The lectures are hard to follow (flipped learning) and in class sessions have clickers that aren't close to the exam qs. There is group work we do in class which is useless. She tried to make this class interactive and give different ways to learn the material but it does not help. Take another prof if you can. She may be nice but is a bad prof.
She is extremely caring and really wants us to do well. You have to use all of the resources to get a good grade and really really try to learn. Organic chemistry is difficult but she gives us the easiest route to a good grade! It is hard to get a hold of her sometimes, but that's understandable with 500+ students.
this prof was on probation in 2018 and after taking this class i can tell why. she is NOT good at teaching. the material is difficult but she somehow makes it even more confusing. i went into every exam with no idea what i learned. the other reviews say she is nice but that does not make up for the fact that she is a HORRIBLE prof.
Dr. Fields is actually super nice and meme-y but don't let that fool you into thinking this class is easy. Flipped learning is so very confusing and some lectures don't exactly help. The worksheets are nice and the quizzes are a carbon copy of them. Exams are super hard, just be ready to make the textbook your best friend when studying.
Though she is kind, her flipped classroom teaching style is inefficient, inconvenient, and unproductive. Provided lectures were useless and did not even throughly go over contents or expectations for tests. I had to rely solely on the textbook.
She has a nice personality but her teaching style is awful. 2 goupwork sheets & 1 friday sheet every week. In additon to groupwork sheets you must do two discussion questions every week. Flipped learning. Might be ideal for some people but for me it was horrible. I felt like my priority was to finish her assignments rather than learn the material.
Absurd amount of useless busy work. Gives conflicting instructions to students about end of semester project and to the TAs grading them. About 2% of the busy work is at the level of what she has for her exams. Prepared to be ignored if you reach out via email or get an attitude from her in person. Doesn't care about students. AVOID AT ALL COST.
She's kind but so much unnecessary work that can make your grade drop a lot. This class consumes your whole semester. Her online lectures don't really make any sense and babbles a lot so I just read the textbook most of the time and practice. Exams are EXACTLY (same format) as the practice exams. Memorize that and you should get an A average.
Dr. Fields is a very nice and kind lady, however the course is not that great. A lot of unnecessary busy work that basically fills up your entire week. However, she does give plenty of resources for the exams which are very helpful. Going to class seems pointless with it being flipped, and in-class practice does not reflect material on the exams.
Her class format had me lost. The flipped class lectures were confusing and clickers counted for a grade in class. While her practice exams are accurate, the group work felt like busywork and I had little time to study the actual content. She has little regard for students' needs and refused to meet student accomodations.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR! She will make you do the most assignments that any professor will have you do. She somehow manages to make at least one time-consuming assignment due at least every other day and it's insane. She seems nice but she really is fake when you talk to her 1 on 1. Avoid her class unless you truly want to be miserable for a semester!
Dr. Fields is better than any other professor there was to choose from. She's incredibly nice, but be aware of the work... it's a lot. The exams are difficult so I suggest making the textbook your number 1 if lectures and worksheets aren't helpful. I love her personality and I would gladly take her again in a class that wasn't so difficult for me!
If you value your own time, feel confident in your own intellect, and don't want to be bogged down by an overload of busywork that doesn't prepare you for exams, do not take Dr. Fields. She is extremely disorganized, unhelpful, and unable to teach organic chemistry concepts. Her joking attitude just makes it worse. Worst professor I've ever had.
Dr. Fields is the reason I've lost my love and passion for Organic Chemistry. Her class works in a "flipped classroom" format which is incredibly difficult for someone who is an active learner. I recommend finding another professor if you have more than 12 credit hours. She's extremely disorganized and learning from her was a horrendous experience.
She was better in Orgo 2 than 1. The weight of the exams were less, but that meant more busy work. Gave extra credit on exams, but not guaranteed. Gave 2% on final grade if you did all the online practice exams. Exams were similar to the old written practice exams she uploads. Make sure to do that, learning objectives, and youll be fine.
Honestly her style of teaching is just not for me. Love flipped classrooms but hate how I felt like I was in kindergarten. To succeed do the previous exams she posts, every time I did that I got an A on the exam. And for the love of god watch the lecture videos and take notes
Amazing professor who really cares for her students, funny and nice a very hard class. Does a great job explaining but a lot of time is needed to set aside like reviewing lectures and taking notes. What got me through this class which I recommend for everyone is to draw each mechanism step by step as you are learning the material.
Did not like flip style and if you don't then don't take her class. There was an insane amount of assignments! There were 3 worksheets a week, all that needed to be submitted online at different times w/ new questions answered as well. Homework once a week, quiz once a week, Clicker Qs every class period, 3 tests and a final. Took too much time!!!
Expect an assignment due every single day Monday-Friday (sometimes multiple per day). It was impossible to keep up in this class if you were taking a normal course load (12 credit hours) due to her flipped classroom way of teaching. Claims she "cares" about students, I didn't see that at all. I don't recommend her at all.
Class is a lot of graded busy work, which I absolutely hate. The upside is that they are easy grades that balance out exams, which are not weighted as heavily. She's far from perfect and sometimes does not explain quite thoroughly enough. However, she definitely cares about her students. She provides resources and opportunities for bonus pts.
Participation is mandatory (20% of your grade) with group work, clicker questions & In-class lecture problems are nothing like the exams. She wastes your time as a result and those 2.5 hours of class time and 50 minute discussion sections every Friday are better spent studying on your own but if you do that, you lose 20% of your final grade
Too much work: 3 worksheets (+extra questions during submission), 1 quiz, 40-50 question homework, discussion session and clicker points EACH WEEK. She does flipped learning and her lecture videos we have to watch before each class are so long and confusing. Her canvas page is a MESS. Shes nice but not a good professor
You can tell she enjoys teaching, just a shame she isnt good at it. Uses flipped learning style so students have to teach themselves all of the material before class. When asked a question she gives unhelpful, vague answer. 3+ worksheets/week. Tests are much harder than wrkshts and hw. By the time you teach yourself the material you are behind.
The reviews describing the amount of coursework are true, it is a lot, but all the worksheets are completion grades as well as in-class clickers. In the end, she is teaching a very difficult course in itself (CHM 2211 and she provides tons of resources. Not the best at teaching but she tries hard to make everyone succeed and makes it fun at times.
She means well, but if you also want a teacher who is good I wouldn't recommend her. Gives a ridicules amount of homework and assignments. Expect to learn more online, than from her. Overall, a subpar teacher
Dont get me wrong Dr. Fields is a nice person, but she is a HORRIBLE professor. Her exams are SOOO difficult and even doing old exams don't prepare you for them. It's a flipped classroom and her lectures aren't helpful, she gives so much busy work and doesn't really answer many questions. 110% avoid this professor and take someone else.
Orgo II is a really tough class, but if you want a good professor to teach it, take Dr. Fields. Her flipped learning structure takes a while to get used to, but it allows her as much time as possible to help you and answer questions. Her class is tough, but she makes it a lot less painful. If you put in the work, she'll happily lend her help.
Dr. Fields is great, very knowledgeable and receptive to students' ideas and concerns. But the flipped learning doesn't work for organic chemistry (for me at least). The course has A LOT of work. You are expected to watch the lecture videos before class, online homework, weekly quizzes, weekly group work, and worksheets.
Dr. Fields was a pretty good organic chemistry teacher! She gave extra credit, all the groupwork was participation points, and she genuinely wants you to pass. She does flipped teaching which may not be for some, but I didn't even watch the lecture videos and still got a B- because she has SOOO many example problems. Great teacher!
Dr. Fields is nice and caring and gives extra credit thats about all the good things. Her exams dont match exam reviews from other semesters. Flipped learning sucks. Bragged about making trick questions for exams. SOO MANY ASSIGNMENTS DUE EVERY WEEK! Final is ACS style which confuses everyone. Makes a difficult class even more difficult.
3.5/5. She makes the subject fun and enjoyable as much as she can. Unfortunately, her joy doesn't transfer to her students. The number of assignments you are given is crazy and gives you little time to study for the VERY hard tests. Most people don't fully understand you need to work hard in this class and that's why they need to take Org II again.
She's a nice lady but I just didn't understand her lectures.
It's a lot of work since it's flipped classroom, but the assignments given do not take much time to do and she always gives the answers at the end of class. You will do well in the course if you put effort into the worksheets. She was very flexible and took many of the students' suggestions into consideration. Very kind and understanding professor.
Very funny and nice, but you have to teach yourself very hard material that she just asks you questions about and gives you worksheets for. Feels a bit like a high school class, not in a good way. Also not the biggest fan of how she writes her exams. She asks the same question over and over so good luck if its the one thing you struggle with.
You need to show up to class with Dr.Fields but I will say, it was worth it. She has a flipped learning style that I felt worked for me. You had to watch lectures before class and then you did practice problems in class. This class does require a lot of studying but that is what happens when you're in orgo 2. She's incredibly sweet!
Dr. Fields is really caring about her students and take the students concerns into account as far as assignments go, the only thing I don't agree with is that there are a ton of assignments due multiple times a week and the tests are much more difficult than the work we do/learn in or outside of class. Overall though she is a good professor.
Nice individual but I would not take again. Be aware of the many assignments she has due every single week along with a project during finals time that is nothing besides nonsense. Her lectures are mandatory however she is very unorganized throughout both lecture and her PowerPoints and prepare to be unproductive during lecture.
The flipped learning style doesn't work for me. If you are great at teaching yourself from video then you will do great in the class. I had to watch the other professor's videos that were linked to understand what was going on. Clicker questions help your grade, but I would rather have a teacher that teaches in person, like at the Sarasota campus.
Fields is an amazing professor that cares about her students. She does do a flipped classroom and personally, this was not helpful for me. The hw and quizzes are unlimited attempts, and she offers EC that help boost your grade. The tests are hard; do practice problems from the book it will help. Good Luck you got this!!
There is a lot of homework in this class so make sure you take her with a lighter class load. Besides the sci lit project homework prepares you for tests. If you pay attention during the clickers, do the group work and watch the lecture videos you'll be ok.. There are lots of extra credit opportunities and tests are only 45 percent of the grade.
Not the best at lecturing, even the videos/PowerPoints feel like they're missing info. The 5 exams are only 60% of the class though, so it's easy to pass, just make sure to do all the extra credit. All the classwork/HW is pretty much completion, so just do everything and go to class for clickers. Do practice exams to prepare for actual exams.
You will not be able to get ahold of her outside the class so if you have any questions don't email her, ask before/after class or ask the TAs. A LOT of extra credit. The final exam was the hardest one, the first two were pretty easy. She gives you the solution to the clicker so just by showing up you will get all those poits.
This was a review I was supposed to post years back since I was an undergrad in 2019. This is one of the literally worst professors I have taken in my entire life(I am a graduate student right now). You know how bad it is since its been like nearly 4 years, and I still remember how crappy this class was. I took her for Orgo I. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!.
Orgo is of course not easy but it isn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be. She does flipped classroom but if the lecture videos are not your cup of tea, the textbook explains it well also. She gives a ton of extra credit and padding to your grade. I personally love her, did really well in her class, but her teaching style is not for everyone.
Its an online class with none of the online class benefits she relies on her " peer group leaders " to answer all the questions students have , and they are students and do not answer your questions on time ever every class is trying to do worksheets with 100 students being super loud the class sucks she wont answer any emails , AVOID THIS LADY
Fields provides a considerable amount of homework, worksheets, and quizzes, all of which are essentially completion grades. This provides structured and consistent practice which you need to succeed in orgo. Old exams are good references for what you'll be doing. However, she also does flipped learning, which you either hate or enjoy.
The flipped learning style was very confusing and made everything so much more difficult and so time consuming. Good luck getting her to answer your emails. Maybe if she spent more time teaching then trying to say a cringy joke this class would be almost tolerable.
She gives a lot of coursework but it is all easy and she gives you most of the answers at the end of class. Lots of extra credit. Can fail every test and still pass the class with a B/C. You can contact her through email, canvas, or GroupMe. She is available from 8 am-1 am. She cares about her students. Highly recommend taking this class with her.
She is an interesting gal, but she really does care about your grade and gives lots of homework and extra credit opportunities to cushion your grade. You could do very average on the exams and still pass with an equally as average score. The final is multiple choice. just practice at least a little and do all the clicker questions in class.
She's a great professor; cares about your grade and gives lots of extra credit to help get a decent grade in the class. Orgo is a hard class so you still have to go the extra mile when studying but she gives us lots of resources that will help us prepare. Final was the hardest exam in my opinion, mostly application based.
Fields is nice and enthusiastic about chemistry. But she does not give traditional lectures (we only go over clicker questions + Groupwork assignments due twice weekly). She assigns a lot of work: quizzes, worksheets, clickers, and homework weekly. The lecture videos she posts are helpful, but she is NOT the best at explaining material.
Although her jokes can be somewhat grating, she is merciful for an organic chemistry professor. I failed the final and the last exam before the final and still got a B+ thanks to the massive amounts of padding through extra credit and homework. Genuinely as long as you try your best you will pass this class.
i seriously have never took the time to rate a professor at usf but this class was so bad i needed to warn people. this was the hardest class i ever took at usf. she doesnt teach and uses horrible methods from COVID she got happt when our class average was a 52. that should say alot.... please save yourself and take a different professor
There are so many chances for extra credit, 2 points on every exam and 2% to the end of your grade but she does a flipped classroom method that is no conducive to anyones learning. SO many assignments between group work, clickers, Friday worksheets, a paper, and many others. Her grading scale is so forgiving but this class is annoying.
This class is a LOT of work, but it's doable if you stay on top of things. Flipped classroom, but take notes and pay attention - you'll be fine. TONS of extra credit and exams graded on a curve. Plenty of practice material and her discord help center is always active. There's no reason you shouldn't pass if you keep up with the workload.
I found the experience with this professor to be frustrating and unproductive. Her implementation of flipped learning felt disorganized, and the excessive assignments only added to the confusion. She struggled with explaining concepts effectively, leaving students to fend for themselves. I wouldn't recommend this professor. BEWARE!!

I did not like this professor at all. Her videos were not helpful, and her classes were full of jokes instead of actual explanations of the content. This is a very difficult class, and she did not make it easy to understand. She made our tests much harder than previous semesters. The only good thing is that exams make up 60% of your grade.
You can tell she is very passionate about chemistry and teaching. However, the flipped classroom for organic chemistry doesn't work. Her videos weren't helpful in learning the material and her lectures weren't helpful practice. She felt more like a TA in her classroom as opposed to a professor.
Lots of work, flipped classroom but the lecture videos aren't necessary tbh. Class itself is kind of disorganized/hectic, she wastes time making jokes, but you definitely have the resources to pass this class with an A if you put effort in. Lots of extra credit and the in class worksheets, powerpoint notes, and practice exams are good resources!
Professor Fields is passionate about chemistry, but her flipped classroom approach can be hit-or-miss. Lots of work, but the quizzes, worksheets, and discord help make it manageable. Give unstuckstudy AI a try for study prep.
Good class
Not a big fan of how she puts things on exams that we have never seen before or chapters that are on future exams. She doesn't teach in class and uses it as an excuse to goof around. Shes more focused on having her peer leaders and TA's record students during exams to catch cheating than teach. She writes the exams at 3am the night before.
She does flipped classroom which is useless. Her lecture videos are also useless so you might as well watch chads prep instead. On tests shes for the most part fair but will throw a couple wild questions at you. There's a lot of unnecessary HW so be prepared. Overall really disliked her but its not impossible to get an A
Dr. Bliss-Roche (Formerly Dr. Fields) is great at teaching Orgo 2. She gives lots of extra credit and it is a flipped classroom so be ready to watch many videos. During class, she does clicker practice which is good for the exams. The exams are fair and there are a lot of hw and assignments to complete but it is great practice. Hard not to get an A
Dr. Fields is incredibly kind and really wants her students to succeed in her class. Personally, I don't mind a flipped classroom. However, her recorded lectures weren't my favorite, and I know that some of my classmates struggled with them. Despite this, she offers her students so many resources to study for exams with endless practice problems.
Fields is a great teacher for one of the hardest classes in Chemistry. This class is difficult and the material is lengthy, but she is the best teacher for the job. hands down.
Impossible to fail bc of all the busy work and extra credit. too much work outside of class imo
flipped classroom. impossible to fail her class because of how much extra credit things you can do, but this class made me want to individually tweeze all the hairs out of my head! for me orgo2 was so much harder than orgo1 and its such hard material.
impossible to fail due to EC and busywork/homework. an A is possible. iclickers every day/discussion. not a great orgo teacher but probably the best on campus due to her grade inflation. the peer leader program might be gone, which was the only thing that helped me other that outside sources or practice exams.
I thought she was going to be really good, based on her (downhill) rate my professor scores. She DOESN'T teach in class, just does clickers that don't really relate to at exams, and the exams are 60% of your grade. She gives a TON of practice to work from like old exams, but the problem is you will honestly not know what to study. DONT TAKE HER!
This class is a nightmare. First the flipped classroom is a horrible idea on its own because of the pace of content of this class with 5-7 assignments per week. I never write reviews but I felt compelled to make sure I could help others avoid the same mistake. BEWARE! This class will take years off your life and you will become your own professor.
I don't get the bad reviews. OChem is tough, but if you study, use resources like tutoring and office hours, you'll be fine. I'm not a great test taker, and still did well. She's fair, does lots of practice problems, and offers a ton of extra credit. Yes, you do have to teach yourself a bit, but that's OChem. Great professor!
