Very helpful, difficult class though, with alot of reading. Interesting course with good subject matterial but you have to put in alot of work for it. She rarely misses class and doesn't usually let out early.
This is like another English class, she will tell you to write the way she wants to write. 30 percent of the grade is based on participation, so if you dont like to speak, dont take this class. She expects you to write 3 developed essays in 1 hour
signed up for a history class and got a english class instead. She wants you to write a perfect essay in class in 30 mins after watching a movie. Talks way to fast and she not very undersatnding when you apporach her with a problem
if you want to learn, take this class. be prepared to take notes, keep up with readings, and write well rounded essays. attendance is a must. she mixes lecture with discussions and videos. if you put forth effort, you'll do fine.
Good teacher, informative.. Very detailed when it comes to grammar in Essay. Nightly readings though not to much, midterm essay exam, paper, and take home final... good teacher would recommend
Great professor....knows the subject very well...tough essays...highly recommend!!
Lectures are hard because she expects you to know EVERYTHING before she teaches it. LOTS of readings and writing. Class is a pain!
This is by far the worst professor i have had at towson thus yet. Your expected to know everything about the middle east from 600bc - 1990 and your expected to lear it all in one semester. expect to read well over 1300 pages of text. Talks 2 much & 2 fast
Very informative but quite difficult. Presents a fair view of difficult issues and related to current events. Lots of reading, talks fast when giving lectures, overall learned a lot!! Knowledge can be applied to recent events!
um..well lets say i was very interested in this course before going to her class.but laterz i came to know its literally an english class.she just talks too fast and its really impossible to take notes while she is talking .strict grader...only take her c;ass if u love to read. i wont take her again
Agree w/all comments. If u have hard time writing or typing well articulated essays in short time or with grammar, DONT TAKE! She assigns lots of reading and talks too fast to take notes - if u read ALL the assnd readings u don't need them. tests all essay. puts u on the spot in class & u must talk.
GReat professor but hard grader. Learn a lot about Islam and current events. She's very very knowledgable about the subject and presents fair views-no assumptions. Definately recommend her
Extremely nice person, but learned little from class because of difficulty of subject. Uses little visual aide, class is 100% discussion, in which you must partcipate in.
worst teacher ever!!! You just sit ther trying to understand the words coming out of her mouth. Shes sloppy, unorganized, and grades unfairly. I learned absolutely nothing in this class and im a history major!!!!!
Ok so lets be fair people. just because shes a horrible teacher dosent mean shes a horrible person. But she is pretty bad on both accounts. This class is plain and simple not worth your money. you read well over 900 pages of text. grades are unfair. and is quite possibly the most boring subject ever
Okay, am I the only one here who thinks she is so totally hot? Maybe its because she is so knowledgable. Yes, there is a lot of reading, and she checks for grammar on papers...but she gives the questions before the exam, and offered multiple chances for extra credit. Sometimes she rambles. Mmmmmm
From all the complaints, she's still not in the toughest tier of history profs (Phillips and Eldridge, etc). Yes, you have to read. Yes, you have to write well. That's history. If you don't write well, she helps you write better. Take her, esp. if you are looking at grad school in social science.
she does grade hard, one of the most difficult classes i have taken but she is an awesome teacher dont worry so much as writeing the notes as absorbing the lectures, people who say she is unfair in grading are just plain dumb shes very fair and knowlegeable does have hard tests tho i got a B
Good teacher, helpful. Intimidating at first, you just need to figure out what she is looking for. Great class, very intresting. I am a freshman and have a B right now. 3 pop quizzes, a map quiz and 2 papers. She grades a lot easier than i expected.
Very interesting class and informative. However, can explain things in lengthy rants. She's also a very tough grader. Despite this, you get to learn a lot!
her class was very very boring. her grading is easy though, she gives map quizzes, and for the exams she gives essay questions that she doesn't grade very hard. if you don't mind coming to class everyday and being bored to tears take her because her class is easy
I learned more in Professor Katz? class than in any other course I took in college. She?s very bright and well qualified. The only problem ? she?s a total **** with zero sense of humor.
Knows what she's talking about. If you survive the first week without panicking you'll be okay.
She's a pretty nice lady overall buy probabley one of the worst lectureres in the Hist. Dept. (if not THE) due to a tendency to just ramble. Sort of a fickle grader but u usually end up with a good grade at the end it seems. I dunno though cause I really don't have a better sense of ME history from this course so take at your own discretion.
She is ****y. very demanding and self rightious. But she had me determined to beat her at her own game. A- final grade. holler!
tests are hard, and a drag
she is a very nice lady and really wants to see you succeed. the class isn't what i'd call easy, however, you'll probably do fine. she will challenge you and help you become a better student. if you are a slacker you may not want to take this class, but if you are a serious student... go for it
Great teacher, kinda tough tests and papers. Just take her advice on writing, it will help and pay off. She does have a final test, just a final paper, which I found quite enjoyable. She is very helpful and smart in her field, just ask and she is more than willing to help out... Oh and she is HOT :)
This whole class is based on Middle Eastern studies, so if you are not interested in the topic dont take the class. The teacher is very demanding and somewhat pompous. There is a 25 page paper you have to write. And a series of quizzes and smaller papers. A ton of reading and class discussions. Defenitely not a slacker class. U need to keep up.
As far as content: the american public recieve a very weak unrealistic perspective on the middle east. This is why she has lengthy/dynamic responses. Hands down, she is very qualified and speaks arabic like indiginous arabs. She demands the death of apathy to the ME and enjoys fine tuning your academic skills in writing and objective thinking.peace
Expects too much from students. Just because she is a genius in the middle east doesn't mean the studnts are
Will make time to explain you're confused during office hours. Really cares that students do well and learn. Does move quickly, there's a lot of material to cover. I recommend her classes to anyone with interest in the Middle East. However, they are not classes designed for slackers, you really have to work your ass off for a good grade.
Terrible. No direction to hear lectures. Studying for one of her exams is terrible. Makes frequent errors in class and if you correct her you will pay. If you don't take one teacher in your life, don't take this lady.
Very interesting class with a very good professor. She is extremely knowledgable and intelligent. Her classes are a lot easier if you pay attention and work hard. She gives wonderful advice on writing and there are only papers in this class and no tests. Def. take this it will help you grow academically and intellectually.
Great Teacher
If you are a slacker do yourself a favor and pass this professor up...she wants you to actually learn and cares about you passing...doesn't grade too hard but can be alot of information to take in at times...if you try your best and apply yourself you should be fine.
This is the third class I have taken with Dr. Katz. She is a really overall great professor and she teaches a very interesting subject. I highly recommend her courses (Hist 117, 118, and 482) if you have any interest in the topics. You will definitely learn A LOT! However, don't be a slacker if you want to keep up!!!
she is very knowlegable about the topic. unless you are willing to read, i wouldn't suggest this class. i liked it because i had never been exposed to the topic before. you will have homework, and have to do work to get a good grade.
Terrible. I'm a Hist Major, and I found her an overly hard grader. Her lectures are all over the place. She teaches poorly but grades hard. I'd stay away from her under any and all circumstances.
Only the most fabulous professor EVER! Her classes are fun and interesting. There's a lot of work and you really have to pay attention, but you will learn so much. Take her classes they're awwweesooommeee!!!!! Are you signing up yet??? Do it! In her upper level classes there aren't tests, just papers and a few small quizzes.
What I learned in this class will be used the rest of my life. There are two exams, both essays that have 2 essays and icons. If you take time to read the book and go to class and take notes you will pass. The other complainers on this page are probably too lazy to work. Never thought I would love this class as much as I did. Oh and one final paper
Very informative. Must attend class and do the reading. 2 exams are pretty straight forward, she grades up instead of down (do not start with points, gain points during her grading) . Would not suggest class to someone who does not want to do the reading or attend the class.
she knows her stuff, but can be pretty difficult. great for people who love history
I found her to be an overly hard grader, especially for a lower level history course. Do yourself a favor and bypass this professor.
if you are taking this class just to fill a GenEd... DON'T DO IT... drop and find something else
Traditionally rigorous professor. If you don't like to learn, don't go. If you do like to learn: make sure you're there every class. Excellent professor.
Shes knows her material very well and the information is good but a hard grader. MANDATORY attendance. way too tough to be a 100 level Gen ED. to get A you have to make this class your # 1 priority and put in heavy heavy hours
You will learn a lot provided you go to class and read the material. BEWARE: She is a TOUGH grader! Print out the lecture outlines, because she's a fast talker and there are no PowerPoints. That said, I don't think I have had a more interesting or rewarding lower division course. Great Professor!
The absolute hardest grader I have ever come across!!! I spent twice as much time studying for her lower level course then I did for any of my upper level history courses. I am not going to debate that she knows her subject matter. However, like most college professors who are more interested in research, she does not know how to assess her student
extremely tough grader. class is too difficult for a 100 lvl class. really knows her stuff, but expects you to know it just as well. if you're just looking to fill a gen ed. don't take.
NEVER take this class. She thinks it's a 300 level and not 100. The test are very challengeing; it's all essay! I studied for weeks for each test, and never scored above an 80%.
All grades are subjective. If she doesnt like you, you will do poorly. Gave the entire class an F on the first quiz, and she did not go over the quiz or write any comments. I was in my last year with a 3.89 GPA, in other words I took school seriously, and still did poorly in her class. All subjective, rude, doesn't grade fairly, and unhelpful.
Managed to pull an B+ in her class so far, but I would not recommend it. The grading is entirely subjective essays. I started recieving higher grades on them the more demeaning I was toward Western Civilization, which is exactly what she wants to hear. If you get offended easily by someone bad mouthing the U.S.A or the West in general pass on this.
Very knowledgeable in the subject matter and a top quality professor and teacher. The tests are not very difficult if you do the reading. She grades fairly and is helpful if you are uncertain about the criteria and stuff. Her class isn't easy but you do learn a great deal. I would definitely recommend
I've never worked so hard in a class to only get a 'B'. Other than that Dr.Katz knows lots about the Middle East. She is very helpful and tries to help students do well.We had very insightful discussions and once you get used to the class, its not so bad. Be alarmed: SHE'S TOUGH. The tests are LOTS of WRITING. STUDY, STUDY,STUDY.
I took her Islamic history class a few years ago. We had two marines in our class who had fought in Iraq and she was REALLY careful not to offend them. I studied hard, attended class everyday, and did all of my work and ended up with a B-, my lowest grade in any class I took at Towson. Her tests were pretty brutal. The final paper was very tedious.
Hardest class I've ever taken, hands down. I studied a total of 5 hours the two days prior and got a high B on test where there were no A's.On the other hand, she knows her stuff and is helpful if, and only if, you ask for it. If you're confused, ask. Sometimes she comes off as rude, but she certainly knows what she's talking about.
i worked my ass off for this class and ended up with a c+. if you can avoid it, do so. i probably spent about 8 hours or so a week studying for this class and even more before tests, but still ended up with only a c+.
very interesting class. nice teacher, who knows alot about Islamic history. Even though she is an expert on the Middle East she teaches the class in a way that it is almost impossible to fully understand everything going on. I worked so hard in this class and received a B-. i would avoid it if possible
She may be intelligent but it isn't worth much if you can not inspire and encourage your students rather than attempt to prove that no one deserves an A. Yup she is one of them, and though her class wasn't a problem for me, I really felt for those in the class she attacked. She fails as a teacher because she fails to convey anything other than...
Professor Katz was one of my first teachers at Towson University. At first I thought her class was made for you to fail. However I came to find it very helpful. The readings and her teaching methods make you a better scholar if you want to put in the work. Her class is challenging but she makes it go by fast. Very knowledgeable and crazy smart.
She is overly knowledgeable on the subject and likes to show it. You have to study extremely hard for the 2 tests and they're still hard. I DO NOT recommend this class if you can help it, half the class is her just ranting about things that wont be on the test. I had to work hard to for a C, first time I ever aimed for a C in my life.
This class was awful. I am a history major and believe it to be harder than all of my upper level classes. She is a tough grader and assigns 3 books that are useless. Expect to read tons of irrelevant material and have terrible lectures that are rambling out of any sense of order. She is extremely smart, prompting me to wish her class was better.
worst class i took in the semester. lectures are completely boring and material is difficult to understand. Assigns 3 books to read 2 of which are irreverent. Horrible class to take and is very strict.
I have taken three of Dr.Katz's classes. You get out of the class what you put into it.She doesn't like those who are lazy/don't make an attempt at the class. She understands that people take her class as a Gen Ed, but she expects you to put your best work forward. I would recommend her for any classes she offers, especially upper levels.
I took 3 classes with her; she's known for being strict, but doing the reading (which isn't hard) and taking notes makes her courses very engaging. I don't consider her exams difficult like other people did, but I already like history and writing. One of my favorite professors by far
Get that textbook, and do readings. Take notes on everything, but highlight reoccuring themes. extra credit helps. Don't expect an easy A or B, just do the readings on time. She did get me really interested in the subject though!. Chronology is hardest, if one thing is out of order, the whole section is wrong. just take notes early on.
Hardest... Class... Ever...
RUN THE OTHER WAY. I took Arabic first semester, and this class is ten times harder. I don't think she understands this is a TSEM and not a 300 level class. We are only here because its a requirement. Very hard grader. Takes her class way too seriously. I like her outside the class, but If you have no interest in Arab studies DONT take this course.
Should not even be a class. Likable teacher at the start but will soon change to hate when you find out that this class is taught more like a 300 level HIST course. Tough grader and I mean very tough. Have to write 5 extra essays along with the 10 page paper throughout the semester. Just avoid this class.
This is the hardest class that I have, don't take it. I am always counting the seconds until its over. Dr. Katz is a EXTREMELY hard grader, there are three presentations, you have homework for every single class sometimes multiple chapters in multiple books in one night, a 10 page final paper, as well as 5 other short writing assignment.
This class was a lot of work, but overall I liked professor Katz. Definitely a strict grader, but don't let that discourage you and ask for her help. She made sure that everyone was keeping up with the class throughout the semester. Pay attention to your grammar and word usage when doing one of the many written assignments.
This class was a nightmare. Katz is unorganized and wasted class time. Quiz questions were ambiguous or about tiny details in peripheral texts but important for final grade. She can be rude and dismissive in class. In person she is kind but unhelpful. This is her subject but she was neither enthusiastic nor informative. Avoid.
Dr. Katz is what you are supposed to expect in collegeuniversity. She prepared me for a real life of academia and I am so grateful. Good is not easy, and I would have rated her even higher in helpfulness because this is helpful in discovering what is needed to prepare for real exams and such.
I've taken a class with Dr. Katz every semester upon transferring. Her lower levels require a lot of work but you will learn about the course material. Now I'm in her upper level and it's much easier because I'm aware of the material. I'm planning on taking her capstone course next semester because she got me hooked on Middle Eastern studies.
Do not take this professor. I cannot believe she still has a job at Towson. She is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. She treats a 100 level Towson Seminar class like a 400 level science class. Her presence brought significant negativity to everyone in the class. Avoid this class if you can!
Yes she is a tough teacher in a way but she knows what shes doing. Always willing to help when its needed. Be prepared to come to every class because discussion helps
Don't take this class if you are planning on slacking- Katz is an expert on the middle east and can tell if you're BSing. I enjoyed this class despite the workload and I ended up learning a tremendous amount about the middle east.
Dr. Katz is without a doubt one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life. She got me interested in M.E. history. She is incredibly intelligent (even a little intimidating!) but once you talk to her she is very personable. You cannot slack in her class. She makes you work for the grade and expects you to try. Show interest and you'll do well.
Dr. Katz wants everyone to do well. She provides the resources, support, and clarity that make her classes tough but well worth it. She comes to class prepared and expects her students to as well. Dr. Katz knows what she's teaching and is extremely passionate-something that works its way into every lecture and encourages her students to pursue it.
Hours of reading required each week. Quiz in class on readings (essay format). Super hard professor. Two papers instead of midterm. Unclear guidelines. Didn't really know what i was supposed to be learning. Most of the class was rambling. This class had no prerecs but you are expected to know ME history already. Would definitely not take again.
Lots of reading i mean ALOT! other than that her lectures are in depth and quite interesting and she lets you use notes for her test . Test arent that hard as she lets you know the general topics of discussion. Great professor as long as you read and great for extra help in understanding some of the historical events that come off as confusing
Prof. Katz definitely knows her stuff when it comes to ME History. Having read some comments on here I was hesitant to take her HIST 338 course, but I'm glad I did! She makes class interesting. She isn't an overly tough grader, but you do have to actually put in work on the papers. Show up, participate and definitely do the readings!
lots of reading, very difficult exams. Far more like a 400 level class than any 100 level that i've ever taken. I wouldn't recommend to freshman. She is a good lecturer, and very knowledgable about the subject, but ultimately the class is far far more difficult than any 100 level should be.
She gave way too much work throughout the year along with a final 10 page paper. She was very disrespectful in the way she would address the class and would blame the entire class for the mistakes of a few student. The topic itself is interesting but with the amount of chapters and work you have to do, You will eventually get bored and sleep.
Eh. Thats how I would describe this course. Prof Katz gives an insane amount of homework required for each class. She was also a bit aggressive in the way she addressed her students opinions. The exams are take home but they are also difficult nevertheless. She does have good intentions and is a friendly lady but the class wasn't what I anticipated
Don't take this class if you aren't ready to work. I took it as a fun elective and it has ended up being a huge pain. She knows her stuff but expects a lot out of you.
I took this professor for the intro to human rights class and it was one of my favorite classes at Towson. It consisted of weekly guest speakers who connected their areas of expertise to current human rights topics or historical abuses around the world. theres 3 short papers, weekly discussions, and a final which makes it pretty do-able
I wish I hadn't taken this class. The professor assigns very boring and difficult readings, and is hard to pay attention to. I paid attention for less than half of every lecture. She's very knowledgable and kind, but not a very good teacher in my opinion. I would not recommend taking this class, even if you are interested in the topic like I was.
I learned a lot from Prof. Katz's class and am happy I took her class. With all the pandemic craziness, Katz was like the only professor of mine to actually understand how stressful it can be learning from home. If you are interested in Middle East history she is a solid choice!!
I learned a lot in her class she teaches well. Knows what she's talking about and is passionate. Was understanding of the needs of her students. Otherwise, she grades harshly and was rude on a discussion post. Answers to questions aren't helpful, very roundabout. Ignored a few e-mails. Required to read 3 full books, 1 for the final. Too much.
This class switched to online half way through the semester and she was my only professor that was sympathetic. She was responsive to emails, helped with assignments, and gave us ample time to complete the numerous papers. She was fair and understanding but there was A LOT of reading (3+books) and a number of papers. I learned a lot in this class
Professor Katz was a great professor this just wasn't my type of class. Each week we had a new guest lecturer with 3 questions due on wednesday's and a blog post due Fridays. The work wasn't hard but its best to attend to understand the information. She does post the recorded lectures which is helpful to refer back to. Gave extra credit.
Do not take this class if you want a Middle East history class. Only take if youre interested in the Ottoman Empire specifically. Monotonous lectures and slides that can be reviewed later on your own time. Grades based on whether you agree with professor. Youd be better off skipping and researching on your own, probably learn more as well.
Dr. Katz is an expert, she is very serious about her field of study. You will never lose an argument on middle eastern history again after this class. Pretty fun if you like real history, sucks if you are into zionist revisionism. History shows, Palestine will be free!
There are only 3 assignments for the entire class, the midterm, final, and a short paper. She is not a tough grader but if you are not interested in the topic do not take this course. Very boring lectures and PowerPoints that only consist of maps.
All she does is talk at you for an hour 15. She bounces all over the place and expects you to automatically pick up what she's talking about. She gives 20+ page readings multiple times a week. She's definitely and expert in her field but her teaching style is more for history majors or people who are actually interested in what she's talking about.
She is a good lecturer just the lectures itself is a little boring. A fair grader and cares for her students and is passionate about the subject.
Professor Katz' class is not an easy class, but if you are interested in understanding the history of Palestinian oppression and occupation by Israel- take this class! I can genuinely say this class taught me something useful, and anyone taking this class will leave being able to challenge Zionist logic in debate or conversation. Free Palestine!
Easy class with material I am familiar with yet regardless of how well I understood the course material Katz refused to point out any positives of my work. With the final exam, I sent her a draft she told me it was a good paper, yet gave me a 70. I tutored two students in her class who left with higher grades. A.A. men should avoid her class.
Please avoid if possible! I spend majority of my nights doing her homework. She is very difficult and gives zero help. Majority if not all of her students complain about her. She treats a level 100 like a level 400.
We had weekly blog posts for this class she's not a helpful professor. She grades really tough and always seems to find a flaw in posts and expects so much for a 400 - 500 word post. While I tend to get 80 - 90's on my blog posts, my classmates have said that she rarely gives them B's.
This class is formatted so badly. There's a required 400-500 word blog post due at the end of EVERY WEEK. Even though the syllabus says blog posts have no prompts & can be written about anything, it's not true, and she has criteria for that is only specified in her feedback AFTER you submit the post. Don't take this class.
While everyone else has reasonable TSEM classes, I'm over here spending hours reading articles and getting bad grades on things I have spent hours on. The class is difficult and extra. Save yourself stress, time, and energy and take a different TSEM.
She is a great professor and really knows her stuff. As long as you pay attention and do all the reading you will be fine. She makes the class more difficult than it needs to be but you just have to read a lot and attend every class. If you miss one class it feels like you are very behind. Her feedback on assignments is clear but sometimes harsh.
This course was great and I highly recommend it and the content that was taught. But the ratings here are not exaggerated, she is an extremely tough grader and does not give good feedback as to what is wrong. I put in way too much effort for a lower-level class to get the grade I did.
If you're like me and taking this class to fill a core requirement... DO NOT TAKE IT. She is an extremely tough grader and there are a lot of assignments throughout the semester. It is just not worth all the effort when I probably could've taken a much easier class and received a better grade. She also never provides helpful feedback to improve.
upon taking her class, she would switch up her syllabus on there it says that Attendance is not mandatory and she does not grade you based on it but at the end of the semester She told me that it was worth 10% of my grades and I almost failed because of it will not be taking this class again
Grading: Discussion questions, class participation, blog posts, final exam, attendance, and extra credit opportunities offered. Every week, faculty members come as guests to give lectures in class. It's important to take notes and read the assigned texts.
Prof. Katz has high expectations, with weekly blog posts and guest speaker assignments. While tough, the course content is engaging. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for studying. Attend class - recorded lectures are helpful.
I liked the class content, definitely learned a lot and we had a different guest lecturer every week which was really cool. Professor Katz is a really tough grader and for no reason. You'll have a blog post with no negative feedback but 15 points taken off. She will do anything to NOT give you a 100%. If this class is not required do not take it.
Just an overall tough grader. Can tell is very old school, will smile in your face and do the opposite behind your back. Kimberly, if you ever read this, put them retirement papers in. I feel sorry for anyone who HAS to take your class. GTH.
Extremely tough grader. Frequently takes off points for no real reason. Rigorous course schedule that we consistently had to move back because students could not keep up. Lectures lacking in any real learning or assistance in developing a college level paper. Prepare to be independent.
As a freshman taking her class, it's has given me a lot of stress. She is VERY passive aggressive, she does not give out anything higher than a 87%. It's very easy to fall behind in her class if you miss a class. She's a tough grader. I stopped going to her class bc she kept telling the class if u behind at the point you may as well drop the class.
There was a lot of reading and writing in this class. She is a tough grader but does give feedback. She is available for office hours and responds to emails. The topic was very interesting and it is clear she is knowledgable in her topic.
