She's really tough and definitely picks some out as her favorites every semester but you can still do well. It may be hard to get extra help but insist and she'll help you. No book to buy, it's online, and you'll only use it in the beginning.
The grading scale is structured such that an attendance check (2) is worth almost as much as one of the papers (5) which is a little ridiculous. Her exams are all multiple choice, but the questions are a paragraph long to try to confuse you. The lectures are all just that, straight from a power point with little to no interaction.
If you want an A, don't take her. However, getting a B is possible if you try hard. Her exams are insane. I went to every class, made all the notes into flashcards, and memorized them all and I've still yet to get an A on an exam! Her grading scale does't help. It's a 100 point system so every point you miss is one % off you grade!
Her lectures were long but interesting. You can tell that she loves what she teaches. Her lectures are all power points. She doesn't put them online so you need to go to class or else you'll miss A LOT. The class is based on 100 points so its hard to get an A but as long as you study you should be fine. She gives extra credit. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK
Dr. Vanderbilt is very knowledgeable in what she is teaching. All of her lectures are powerpoints which are not online. Her quizzes are super easy if you took good notes and her tests are basically the quizzes but more in depth. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. You'll never need it bc her notes should help you. You become more close w your section leader.
She's a great teacher that is super informative and easy. Her lectures are extremely vivid, visual, and never boring. Her quizzes match her lectures exactly. (Side note: She's super attractive)
She makes the class really interesting, and the class itself is not that hard. As long as you look over your lecture notes then you'll do fine on tests and quizzes. Do all the homework, there are only 5 assignments. The book is online so you don't even have to pay for it. I didn't use it much though and did just fine.
Cool teacher, she pretty much tells you what will be on the quizzes/tests during lecture. Have never read the textbook and stuff got an A. Lectures are interesting. Just take notes from the powerpoints and study those for the tests
She is a really great teacher who is genuinely interested in the subject of Psychology. Her lectures were always interesting as well. As long as you go to class and read over your notes you will do good in the class. Her expectations for grading were also very clear and understandable.
I kind of want to be her best friend.(Dr. V, if you're reading this, let's get coffee.) She's incredibly clear and everything on the test is covered in lecture. This class was the easiest & most enjoyable A I have ever received. She even inspired me to minor in psychology. Yay!
Go to class, take good note on easy-to-follow lectures and you will get good grades on tests. 3 tests, final not required if you are satisfied with your grade. 6 article reviews 1-2 page max, short articles (only one 10 page). She makes class fun, and class credit assignments randomly given. I used the book only to write parts of article reviews.
She's a really good professor, you can definitely tell she is passionate about psychology. She pretty much just gives powerpoint lectures but makes them interesting. As long as you take good notes on the powerpoint and pay attention during lecture you will do just fine on your weekly quizzes. There are 4 homework assignments but they're not too bad
Lectures for the most part are very fun and interesting. Very important to go to the lectures because quizzes and exams are based on them and they are not posted online. Would take again
1- you have to be in class every time and u have to write 2-3 notes every class. 2-alot of quizzes( every Friday) 3-so complicated grading 100% system, every point 1% 4- she don't post her slides in CC. 5- YOU DO ALOT OF WORK out of class HPP studies.( no grade for it, but if u don't do it, it will effect ur grade so bad 6- WOREST CLASS EVER :)
I took Professor Vanderbilt for child development. This was my favorite class ever. She is so passionate about what she teaches. The tests are somewhat hard. There are 6 super short papers that are not hard at all. She shows a lot of cute videos of babies and little kids! Definitely recommend this class with her.
She doesn't post the lectures online, so go to lecture. She is really funny. She does her best to make complicated sounding topics sound really simple and tries to get us to see how the topic can relate to us.
She is very straight forward on how she grades everything. There are no surprises or pop quizzes. You can tell she really cares about psych and has a lot of fun teaching it. Go to the lectures!!! She tells you everything you need to know for the weekly quizzes at the lectures. I did not open the book once and still got a high A.
Her topics are interesting. The weekly quizzes can be much harder than necessary but overall she's passionate about PSYCH.
TAKE THIS CLASS! psych 100 is kind of a hard class but with her it was easy. 2 lectures a week and 1 smaller lecture with a TA but very helpful! exams are not hard, just like the quizzes. just read the book and you will pass no problem!
She's a good and nice professor, but I didn't like the fact that she lectures extremely fast to the point that she needs to grasp deep breaths to keep lecturing. Due to this, there's little to no interaction in the class, so it gets overwhelming to listen to a speedy lecture while taking notes and trying to understand the material.
such an interesting class. Makes you see things differently. The weekly quizzes will stress you out, but you just need to take time to study.
Professor Vanderbilt is a great teacher. This class is a lecture, however she does a great job of relying information clearly. This class isn't an easy A unfortunately. You will have to work for it, study, go to class and you'll be fine.
Professor Vanderbilt is such a gem. She is so passionate and you can definitely tell in her lectures. She really wants her students to succeed and is easy to get a hold of. Her lessons aren't hard at all if you show up for class. I didn't use the textbook and passed easy. Plus she's very understanding and funny.
Effective teacher but her grading criteria is ridiculous.
She's very nice but she grades papers so meticulously that you end up getting horrible grades on them. She marks you off for things not even in the instructions she gives for the papers.
She doesn't grade papers consistently for everyone. I went to talk to her about my paper being marked off for length while others in the class weren't marked off for length and she said she marked everyone off for this but I saw other peoples papers and they didn't get points knocked off. This is only one example but this is not okay. Be fair.
She seems nice by the way she carries herself but she is truly rude and mean. She is a very inconsistent grader with unclear directions. I would get points marked off for things other people did not get marked off for. Her directions seemed straight forward but even when followed there would be several things she would want but would not mention.
Such an amazing teacher! Straight forward and organized lectures. The only reason you wouldnt ace this class is if you didnt study for your section classes. Come to these lectures! Theyre only 50 minutes out of your day and really helpful to understanding the whole chapter!
teaches you everything in class, be prepared to take notes (has everyone on powerpoint but doesn't upload). Easy homework, tests aren't too bad just come to class and study. Drops lowest exam grade (there's 4)
Professor Vanderbilt is a gem. It is very clear through her lectures that she is very passionate about the material. Speaking of lecture, it is not required to attend but if you want to pass, you should go because she doesn't upload the powerpoint online. The quizzes and tests are straight from the notes so you don't have to purchase a textbook.
My favorite class this semester. The material is interesting and clearly laid out. You have 4 exams (lowest 1 is dropped) so do well on the first 3. You participate in a few studies, get that done soon. Only like 4 HW assignments and very simple just don't procrastinate, quizzes are easy if you study, everything is covered in the lectures, SHOW UP!
Professor Vanderbilt is the best psychology 100 professor you could possibly have. Shes so passionate and very clear in her lectures , it makes it so easy to understand. Her quizzes and test are super easy, just study ! Youll do great!
The sweetest professor EVER! She genuinely cares about her students and knows exactly how to make her lectures funny and entertaining while still teaching lots and lots of information. I wish I had her for every class I took in Psych. She goes the extra mile for her students. Really understanding and empathetic towards students with disabilities :)
Professor Vanderbilt was a really great lecturer and every class was very interesting. She always has great examples and knows what she's talking about. I think there was only one paper for this class and was pretty easy. Tests are a little difficult so you can't get away with not studying!
Very engaging professor, but she was never accessible outside the classroom. Tests were really really hard but if you study hard you'll be okay.
4 exams, lowest score dropped. 3-4 hw assignments. Take notes b/c doesn't upload lecture. The section classes that follow the lectures at the end of the week are where quizzes and tests are taken. It really depends on your section professors because they are the main ones who do the grading.
She not only was a good professor, but made her students feel comfortable by just being a genuine person. She has a lot of experience in the material that she teaches and doesn't make the class overwhelmingly hard. She graded fair and gave a fair amount of work that would be expected of a college student. Make sure to go through helpful slides.
Great teacher. Loves her topic. Very helpful
Very engaging in class but is really annoying tbh, thinks she's super quirky and shoves it in your face. Lectures ARENT posted online so you HAVE to go to class to get info. She isn't flexible whatsoever. I emailed her once and she never replied... so yea, she's not as great as people may think. dont take her, take someone else.
Overall had a great experience. Lectures were clear and she gives such good examples to help you remember info. She does not post presentations so this is a class you need to attend, although attendance isnt required. Tbh you dont NEED the book as she covers everything that is going to be on the tests during her lectures.
4 exams and the lowest one is dropped. 3-4 home work assignments. She doesn't upload her slides so you have to attend class. Don't really need the book because the material on her slides are only on her exams. there is a quiz every week so make sure to review notes from the week. 100% would take again!
The way she talks is very casual and kinda all of over the place, if you dont mind that then you should take her. The class is pretty easy you just have to put a little effort into studying. overall good choice
She's a great professor, but if you don't show up to class, make sure someone that went can give you the notes to class. Quiz every week based on the concepts from the lectures lowest 2 get dropped. 4 exams including the final, lowest one gets dropped, do well on the first 3, you wont have to take the final. Only like 4-5 homework assignments!
This professor knows how to lecture. Don't even bother buying the book. Section professors vary some are great others truly suck. The grading truly sucks and you WILL be graded unfairly in HW assignments. The only way to pass this class is by listening to lectures (take notes on everything!) and pass the tests and quizzes with at least a B.
If you are not good at quickly comprehending and working well under pressure, find a different professor. She is a tough grader and has a lot of homework assignments. 4 tests. 1 is accumulative. 40 questions. 50 minutes. Does not accept late work. Gave her a 3 because her lectures are good and she cares about the topic. I would not take her again.
Does not respond often to academic questions.
My favorite Psychology teacher at San Marcos. Dr. Vanderbilt knows how to give an engaging and interesting lecture. With her lectures I didn't even need to read the book. I always looked forward to her class, I would recommend this professor.
I loved having Professor Vanderbilt as my psych professor. You can see how passionate she if about the subject and has a great way of teaching it. She always answers any questions or concerns you might have. Its very easy to learn from her. We had assignments every week , but they were nothing out of this world if you studied the material.
Unorganized. She almost failed the whole class, as the TA made a lot of grading mistakes. I told her about my dad, and she didn't care. Avoid if you can.
She has really good and engaging lectures. She also helps out in her office hours. Her exams are all online and are also timed so you have to know the material. She doesn't post her lectures online so its important to go to class or get from a friend.
has a great sense of humor! super cool prof.
I really liked her class and she always made lectures really fun by adding her own examples for terms. The only thing for psych is that you really need to study the material learned in lectures because everything that is said is placed in the exams and quizzes; its all lecture based.
Her notes were exactly what was on the quizzes.1 quiz a week (super easy) and 4 exams total. You get to drop 2 quizzes and 1 exam grade. Makes psych super easy to understand. Couldn't ask for a more effective teacher. HIGHLY recommend her course.
Really fun lecturer and overall nice person. The lectures enhance comprehension of the material and her slides are great, so if you miss a lecture class I would recommend going to her office hours to go over the material. She sticks to the syllabus very closely, in terms of grading policies and extensions so be careful. But I loved her class!
I loved this class- very interesting, and relevant. Dr. Vanderbuilt is funny, engaging, knowledgable, and deeply cares about her students. All the quiz/exam material is from the lectures so if you miss class go to office hours to get caught up. Take lots of notes and study the vocab. Exams/quizzes are all application questions.
STUDENT BEWARE. This is the class setup to make you fail. You think your just fulfilling a normal GE until you and 60% of the class are failing and you have to call your mother and tell her your never gonna be a winner in life or get a real job. You will be a failure if you take this teacher and you will never live up to any expectations you have.
I really enjoyed her class. Attendance is not mandatory but all tests and quizzes are based off the lectures so it is important to attend class since she does not post any slides on canvas. The homework assignments are very easy. I would recommend taking her class :)
The professor isn't that accessible outside of class, she doesn't post the lectures online. The exams are kind of difficult, she doesn't post any study guides or anything. Weekly quizzes are timed, 10 minutes for 10 questions. her TA will be grading your papers every week and docking you points for literally anything, ANYTHING. take a diff prof.
I adore Professor V! She's incredibly passionate and knowledgeable, and she genuinely cares about her students. She understands we have lives outside of school, and she's so relatable, loving, and fun. I highly recommend doing research with her as a research assistant; she's the best!
Prof V is amazing!!! She's so funny and kind and she makes her lectures really fun. The only tough part about the class is the sections because you have a quiz every friday and a lot of material to review from the lectures earlier in the week. So you do have to study and keep up with notes/reading. But she is AWESOME!
Her lectures were pretty boring-she did make things easier to remember and tried to be personable. Every week we had a quiz and there were 4 exams in total, the lowest exam and quiz score were dropped, you do not have to take the final if you do well enough on the first 3. We had section teachers though, I overall enjoyed this class and recommend.
had to watch lectures as homework and quiz every day at the beginning of class. a lot of time spent re-going over the lecture material but is very helpful when answering student questions. attendance wasn't mandatory but each class has a quiz and an assignment worth points. pretty easy quizzes if you watched the lectures. really sweet prof
Very caring professor. This was a "flipped class," which means you watch the lectures at home and then take a quiz at the start of class. Every class has an in-class activity. Sometimes she tries to trick you on the quizzes, but nothing crazy. 3 exams, 5 Article Reviews. I would take her again.
dr. v has been my favorite professor at csusm by far, she's very cheerful & helpful! we watched her lectures online at home, then came to class and did quizzes & small activities/discussion; we didn't really have any homework besides 5 article reviews. there's 3 exams, but the final one is optional! i had a lot of fun in her class :)
It was a big lecture, and she never posted the slide shows, so you had to come to class, which was super annoying. The exams were relatively easy; you just had to go to class because she played videos so that the questions on the exam were out. she is very cheerful and talks to you as if you are her toddler, but she's nice
Professor Vanderbilt is an incredible teacher. Her passion for Psychology is evident and each lecture was engaging and fun to attend. She doesn't post the notes online so it's important to attend class. Class is easy if you study the material, but there is a lot of info. I would 100% take her again. This class made me even more interested in Psych.
Dr. Vanderbilt was an amazing professor. Her class was straightforward. Everything you need to know is clearly outlined in her syllabus, and all the assignments and quizzes in the class are tailored to prepare students for the exams. The exams were short and based on concepts learned during lectures. Overall, a super easy and enjoyable course.
She doesn't lecture in class; it is on your own time, the videos are ~1 1/2 hours, so notes can take longer. Each class has a quiz & graded activity based off of lecture video, she will drop 3 quizzes (stated in syllabus). No papers, but there is 1 page writings, usually reaction/summaries of articles she gives. 3 exams in total, but will drop 1.
Great professor overall and very joyful. She is very kind and is easy to talk to. Class is straight forward and lectures are very easy to take notes on. Tests are easy. I unfortunately went through some hardship near the end so I wasn't able to get the grade I desired, but she was still there to communicate with me. Don't be hesitant to reach out.
Very kind, but grading system is so bad barely any assignments and exams make up for lots of your grade.
I enjoyed this class and felt like I learned a lot!! You'll be covering multiple chapters in each exams, so it does start to feel like a lot to remember at once, but it's honestly very manageable. She's also very sweet and funny, and comes across as having such a genuine interest and care in psychology, which honestly started to rub off on me.
I loved this class, and was so genuinely interested in all of the lectures. The homework is very easy to do and so are the quizzes. Vanderbilt is really nice and caring. The only thing I hated was the grading system, as every single point equaled a percentage in her class- so you have to be really careful and study.
She's sweet and cheerful but a tough grader. She does drop 3 quiz scores and 1 exam score which is really cool. I recommend attending all classes in order to take those online quizzes.
She's the human version of a group project where no one knows what's going on but everyone's too polite to say anything. I left every class spiritually confused and academically bankrupt. She's sweet, but her teaching style is just vibes and blind optimism.
She's the kind of professor who'd bake cookies for finals week but forget to teach the material. I left with diabetes and a D. Her class was like a sleepover with no supervision, fun chaotic, and ultimately detrimental to my academic health.
She smiles through the chaos like a Disney side character. Her lectures are just PowerPoint Karaoke with no plot. I passed the class through trauma bonding with classmates and divine intervention. She's sweet, but I now fear the sound of her voice.
Racism? Check. Eye-rolls? Olympic level. Assigns students to teach while she micromanages vibes. Sent wrong due dates 3x. Grades like it's a personal vendetta. Avoid unless you're writing a villain origin story. Worst human award !
Her energy: Disgruntled hall monitor on a power trip. Made all of the students uncomfy. Her science is "Optional" and if you challenge her, prepare for verbal warfare. Personal attacks are her love language. 0/10. I would rather lick a subway pole.
So dismissive when students ask questions, then blames us when we are unable to finish lecture b/c we are confused and asks questions?!! She's more focused on finishing slides than making sure we understand. Unfair grading based on her preferences, not content. Makes class even harder than it already is alone. Worst professor ever!
The WORST professor!!! I can't comprehend how she's a teacher. She doesn't care about her students AT ALL. She's also very incompetent to teach. You honestly have to teach yourself the material. If you email her (multiple times), she'll completely ignore it. Overall, CSUSM made a huge mistake hiring this Professor!
Students lean on their professors as a form of guidance and knowledge. Having an incompetent professor who isn't versed in the topic at hand makes learning very limited and difficult. The lectures were unorganized, the professor acts like a teenager, and has a poor attitude. Overall she disregards students as human beings. Good luck.
Show up to class, very lecture heavy for PSYC 100. Honestly her class isn't that challenging if you pay attention to the lectures. Her lectures are fast paced. There are weekly quizzes of the lectures, and we have topic assignments. Overall, she seems like a nice person but just be sure to really study for her class.
Great professor and lectures were never too bad!! Not a ton of work, and definitely an easy A or B if you show up and put in the effort.
quiz every week u need to really study to pass those and she is not helpful during office hours she honestly look annoyed when i would go. idk her class made me mad but shes ight
Lectures are dry, overloaded with information, and delivered in a tone that feels condescending. Going to office hours doesn't help much either. Instead of clarifying, she tends to lecture you about how you should already know the answer. It feels less like education and more like a power trip. If you value your GPA and mental health, steer clear.
Nice professor. Lectures were cool. Her lectures are note-heavy and she goes by the slides quickly. I recommend taking digital notes if you are a slow writer. There is either a short quiz or a test EVERY Friday unless if there is a holiday. They are easy to pass if you study for at least 20-30 minutes. The grading system is kind of wack though.
This is her first semester teaching 301 and it was so homework heavy. There was at least one assignment due every class and quiz weekly. She also assigned 5 papers on top of all of the homework. The class was unnecessarily time consuming despite how easy the material was. It was more of a chore to keep track of all the assignments actually due.
Quizzes every week. No study guides. She just reads off the slides. I have taught myself more on my own than she has. Don't try to email her, she won't respond. Doesn't let you retake quizzes/tests no matter the excuse.
She was amazing, very passionated in her subject. Be ready to listen in lectures and take lots of notes in class (the lecture slides are not online). There was a separate class every Friday where we had weekly quizzes and took our exams, this allowed for a second teacher in a smaller class. The textbook wasn't honestly needed, not reflected ontests
Dr. Vanderbilt is a nice professor who genuinely cares about her students, but her class felt more like busy work than a genuine learning experience; like she was trying to figure out how to attach points to a careers class. The weekly quizzes were sometimes unreasonably difficult, and the material was very common knowledge for upperclassmen.
