Biology 123 is one of the harder classes for incoming underclassmen but Dr. B definitely makes the class fun and passable. She truly cares about her students and goes the extra mile to ensure that students learn material. She is by far one of the best professors I have ever had and instructors like her are incredibly rare!
The lack of a curve on Dr. Buckholz's course makes me wonder if she realizes how intricate the course material is compared with other introductory sciences. If you don't have a ton of hours to study for a 3-credit course, don't take this class.
I have never had a professor, especially for a class that big, care that much about the success of her students. I wish all of my professors engrained stud habits into my head the way she did. Material is a piece of cake, and while a test every two weeks seems daunting, it's actually way better than a few giant midterms!
Professor B is honestly the best. Her lectures are fantastic and she provides thee most excellent notes. She's super duper engaging and fun. She organizes great group demos, offers extra credit, and is always always willing and able to help. She truly goes above and beyond to help her students. Get into one of her classes! Seriously!
I love professor B. She is so helpful and kind. I would definitely recommend going to her office hours to have anything cleared up. Her tests are easy if you study and use the resources available to you.
The tests aren't too bad if you study and use the resources. She really cares about her students, and is pretty funny too. Always print the lectures out and take notes on them during class!
Love Dr.B! Always print out the lectures before class. When studying use every tool available to you (trust me, Dr.B provides plenty)! Its obvious through her lectures that she genuinely cares for her students. She's also super approachable so don't be afraid to ask questions. Highly recommend!
This class seems intimidating at first but as long as you go to the class, print out the lecture notes, and answer the study guide questions you'll do fine. Yes, I know that sounds like a lot, but really it's not, this class really helps prepare you for higher level classes. My advice is to use colored pens for her lectures!!!!!
Dr. B is the best professor I've had. She makes everything so clear in her lectures. To save printing money, use a laptop, convert her posted pdf lectures to powerpoints, then use Paint to draw diagrams. Make sure to write everything she says! To study, I go through every powerpoint, then draw concept maps and pictures on a large paper. It works!
I loved Dr. B! Best lectures happen when students are actively participating. Engage yourself in lectures, try to offer answers to her questions, read the book (super helpful), print out lectures, and re-write lecture notes if you don't get it the first time, gives great class demonstrations, check out ALL the resources she gives you, PARTICIPATE
The class material for someone who hasn't taken biology in four years is fast and furious. The material that I personally feel is more basic knowledge she goes over in repetitiveness, yet glosses over more difficult concepts. Missing class is not an option in order to pass. The class is completely test based with no other grading criteria.
Shes great, her lectures are interesting and she used a lot of examples. She cares and gets really excited when people get things. Her tests are based off her lectures and her in class activities are always on there.
This class will make you rethink health science goals. For an intro course, the class material is very intricate and detailed. Only 20 questions on each of her 5 exams, each worth 15% of your grade. To me, this class was a filtering tool to get people to switch out of health sciences. I absolutely hate Bio with a passion after taking this course.
Dr. B is amazing! I was scared of this class at first because I was never good at science but I got over 100% in the end! Take advantage of her study guides, review sheets, caps review sessions, and extra credit and you'll pass! Idk why some say she's hard, as long as you study and put in effort you'll pass. Don't expect to glide through!
Amazing professor! Print the lecture notes it'll help! Yeah it's a waste of paper but it's helpful when you look back at you're notes! Do study guides and go to review sessions and you'll pass! But seriously print the lecture notes because EVERYTHING she says are in those notes plus it allows for students to be involved to fill in blanks. AMAZING!
She doesn't take attendance, but you need to go to all her lectures! The material may be hard, but she is an absolute sweetheart who just wants you to succeed - she is always available, provides videos/websites to help you study on her lectures, does fun in-class activities, and honestly cares about her students. I HIGH KEY RECOMMEND!!!!
Professor Buckholz is a fantastic instructor. She is very passionate about not only bio but health sciences and environmental science and this really shows in her choice of lecture material and supplemental readings. She provides outlines on learn to accompany each lecture. Go to class and take notes on your textbook and you'll get an A.
Dr. B is my absolute favorite professor at UNM. Her class had 6 exams, none (including the final) were cumulative. She provides about 3-4 study sheets for each exam - which all of the test information is on. She is such a breath of fresh air. She wants everyone in the class to pass. Attendance isnt mandatory, but she tests on her lectures.
Dr. B. rocks! I walked into this course fully prepared to barely pass, boy was I wrong. There are 6 exams which were challenging and scary, but Dr B. provided several study guides, online activities, and songs/raps to help you retain the information, her lectures are also super informative. If you have to take bio, take this class!!!!
For a bio professor she doesn't drop the lowest test grade but she is a good professor. only a few things are graded and they are all exam grades.
She is a nice person. The class is extremely hard and the grading scale is awful, 6 exams each Q is worth 2 points and that's it. You blow up one test, you FAIL.
I took this teachers class twice and still did not pass, so I took it with another teacher and breezed through. Her tests and lectures are extremely difficult to interpret. She is very passionate and knowledgeable in this class but doesn't teach it the way it should be taught. She drops the lowest grade, but class is still super hard.
Dr.B is a great professor! I strongly advise anyone looking to take bio 123 to take it with her. The book is not necessarily needed because she provides so many lecture slides but be prepared to take 6 exams, 20 q's each. Thats basically all you will ever be graded on so study hard and actually go to her lectures and you should be fine
There are only five short tests and a final. The class is not that hard as long as you attend lectures and do the study guides. Attending lectures is really important, I missed a few and it reflected based on the grades I got on my test.
Dr. B wants to see you succeed in her class. She does not take attendance, but if you miss one of her lectures, you are only selling yourself short - you WILL miss info important to the exam. She only grades by exams, so be ready to study. She gives all the necessary resources to pass the exams, the rest is up to you! I passed each exam with an A.
She definitely is a great person, however, I felt that most lectures were rushed so that she could get through all her slides within the amount of time. There are only 5 tests and a final with two extra credit opportunities. Do print out lectures and read the textbook ahead of time, I made my own study guides which helped me a lot.
Dr. B is the best, however be prepared to work. Her class is only tests so in order to keep a good grade you must do well. There are also extra credit opportunities, so those could save you if you don't do well. I would recommend this class anyways because while the tests require a lot of studying, Dr. B provides the best review materials.
An amazing teacher, super nice and intelligent. Really knows what she is talking about. Attendance is not mandatory but you'll miss information because she leaves blanks in the slides for you to fill in during class. The final is not cumulative but there is 6 exams total, including the final, only 20 questions apiece and provides good study aids.
Excellent professor. I was sad to see she did not teach other bio classes.
This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. I took Biology in High School and received an A+. I barely passed this class, it was the worst grade I've ever received in my life, I've never received lower than a B+ on a final grade before. I do not recommend this class unless you are willing to put your entire life on hold for one class.
Dr. B is a very effective teacher who truly wants her students to succeed. She gives lots of resources to her students to help with material comprehension. Printing out the lecture slides is a must! Everything on the tests are on the slides, which are filled out during class. I completely recommend her.
Buckholz gets the rep of being too hard but as long as you are willing to study and actually try you will be fine. The only grades in this class is 6 tests which seems nerve racking but she is really helpful and wants to help you succeed. If you only want to do one thing to study for this class just fill out study guides and attend lectures.
Prof Buckholz is awesome! I wish I could take her for all of my biology classes. Her lectures are very specific and she gives you all the notes and they are interactive. Lots of in class activities to keep you engaged and help you learn. Her tests aren't too hard, and she gives you really specific study guide questions which are great for studying.
Professor Buckholz is amazing! This class is extremely interesting, but there is a lot of material. It is vital to attend every lecture, because it is difficult to catch up. The grade is based off of exams only, and no homework. The exams are easy as long as you do not miss class. Overall, the key to getting a good grade, is to not miss class
Dr. B is amazing!! She provides you with so many different materials from study guides to videos to exam reviews (it is all optional work but if you do use them you will succeed). Participation in class can is the big difference in passing or failing this class so always try to participate!!
Although I didn't get the grade I would've liked in this class, I am not a fan of science courses but I did enjoy the lectures. Ms Buckholz is a very passionate professor and she is very clear on her expectations of her students. The class is based on exams and we had about 6 in one semester. Lets just say they aren't easy.
This was my absolute favorite class at UNM. Dr. Buckholz was so energetic and fun and her lectures were interesting. If you do the study questions she provides, you will pass. There were 6 total exams and some extra credit. She is amazing definitely recommend her!
This class is hard at times, you definitely have to study for the exams and read the book and lectures. Do not miss class because most questions for exams come from the lectures, record the lectures. Buckholz is a wonderful professor, if you need help go to her office hours. She helped me figure out better ways to study for the class.
Dr. B's teaching style is great. She uses a lot of analogies to try to connect the biology concepts. In addition, she does concept maps, demonstrations, and review worksheets. You must attend lectures because you have to fill out the blanks on the lecture slides (that you have to print out). Her expectations are clear, you just have to go to class.
Dr. B provides several resources for you to pass. The study guides are a MUST, use the textbook as a reference guide if your having trouble AFTER talking to her personally, and going to review sessions. She really goes above and beyond for you to understand, but you have to meet her halfway. Put in the effort and get the grade you want.
LOVE HER!!!! She made biology so fun and interesting. She's passionate and it is clear that she loves her job. Buckholz wants you to succeed and if you try then you will pass. Take good notes in class, do the study guides, and pay attention. I got an A on every test. Everyone who needs bio should take this. Mostly graded on tests and some homework.
Super hard class. Lectures that are not clear. Test review questions have pretty much nothing to do with the test, better off going to the review session that she doesn't even hold. Lectures so unclear, campus tutors couldn't help. Very fast talker. Does not give enough time to take test. Takes way too serious for a non-major class. DO NOT TAKE!!
Dr. B was the best teacher I've ever had! She wants every student to succeed & she loves what she does cus she gives us so many resources to help understand the material & she makes class so interesting. She gives study guides for every exams & its so similar to the test. & No attendance taken but lectures are so helpful that I never missed class.
Worst instructor I've had in the few years at Unm. A tad rude in responses, if you call her on a mistake. Would not recommend or take another class she teaches. Very dissatisfied by the quality of instruction from Kimran Buckholz (Miller) Tests are confusing. Drops valuable points. Will make you hate biology and rethink health careers. Terrible!
took this class online & Dr. B was ok until pulling a jekyl/hyde. does not care about students well being and will fail you over 1 missed assignment. opted for Dr. B. due to good reviews, but it was like it was not even the same person from reviews, she probably writes the good ones herself. made a proud and promising student hate academia. talent!
I would not recommend taking this course if you don't need it! I took it because I thought I would go into health related sciences but I made the choice to chose another major. I ended up being stuck in the course, not getting any of the content and I didn't pass. She has no mercy for people who are not health related majors, my grade suffered.
The worst professor I've ever had at UNM. The online class is extremely disorganized, and she is rude in her responses. From day one there are literally 18 folders, each with 5 or 6 folders inside, and you have to try to navigate through all of them to find the assignments. She makes it impossible to pass, especially for someone new to UNM.
Took this online course over the summer semester and it made me love Biology. Her online audio lectures were extremely easy to follow. I was able to move through the audios and actively listen while taking notes on slides she provided for printing and was able to pass each exam with flying colors. She is hilarious and offers a lot of support. 10/10
If you want to waste your valuable tuition money on playing with blocks and Play-Doh, then this class is for you. Although she is very intelligent in her subject, her teaching style is horrible. I have never hated a class as much as this one. Her lectures are 99% "Buddy Activities" from 5th grade. So much potential but such a bad teaching style.
This lady is terrible. Talks to you like a kindergarten student. Would not recommend. Definitely to demanding of an entry level science course. Very unforgiving course. Waste of my tuition.
Absolutely awful. Her teaching style is PAINFUL. I'd go to lecture and take maybe one note per 20 mins while the rest was spent waiting for her to finish up silly little group activities or explaining some overcomplicated metaphor. Wish she would just teach BIOLOGY instead. Enormous waste of time, totally painful class if you have even 1/2 a brain.
The most wildly convoluted class ever. A draconian novel of a syllabus, a $100 "inclusive access" MANDATORY e-text); condescending "buddy activities"; banning of computers (she wants you to print out every power point instead!); the impatient, rude way she talks to students, the list goes on. The subject is easy. The course is ridiculous.
Awful communication. Makes things million times more difficult than they need to be. This is a lower level science class, there's no need for that. This professors courses are the ONLY ones still with seating space left (was trying to switch prof).... What does this say? ... says NO ONE wants to take her courses. that's how bad she is
Buckholzs teaching style is incredibly patronizing. Enjoy spending your lectures learning about study strategies and time management instead of biology. Overcomplicated metaphors for simple concepts just make things confusing. Printing 50+ page lectures and filling in blanks is not learning. Pre-K buddy activities are a waste of time. 0/10. Awful.
Only opens assignments on the day they are due and has group projects which defeats the purpose of an "online" class. She's very rude and condescending even in situations you can't control. Most disorganized professor i've ever experienced. Makes it impossible to succeed.
Rude and condescending. Only has assignments open on the day they are due and the assignments often have 10+pages of instructions. Does not respond promptly what so ever. You can hear how condescending she is through her lecture videos. Group activities for an online class and only allow 24 hour access to each assign makes absolutely no sense.0/10
Heed the warnings. This professor is rude and very arrogant. She has little respect for students others courses, opens assignments for one day at a time, tests have very little to do with study material. Her classes really are the only ones that stay open. Intro level class made miserable by horrible teaching methods. Do not take!
Dr. Buckholz is AMAZING. Her class is a decent amount of work, but if you are interested in biology and go to UNM, you NEED to take this class before any other. I have learned more from her class than I have my more advanced biology classes at UNM. Everyone that complains about her complains for personal reasons, but she is amazing.
She is an amazing person! She truly is interested in everyone's future and makes sure to provide activities to help you understand every topic. She is very caring and is willing to do anything for her students to succeed. You will definitely pass her class if you watch lectures and take notes.
She really cares about her student. Lectures are long and tests are slightly difficult. Overall good class.
She seemed like a sweet person. The only thing I didn't like was that she told us we didn't have to attend the zoom meetings because they weren't mandatory & that they wouldn't talk about anything important, but when it came to the tests she was asking questions that they talked about and discussed in the meetings, so I thought it was unfair.
She's a really great professor who cares a lot about her students. The class is very difficult if you don't have a lot of time on your hands to study. The lectures were long and she offers resources to make sure you understand the material but everything takes up a lot of time. The tests are tough and the final exam was especially difficult.
Kimran is rude and condescending. She speaks slower than a sloth and is the most boring professor I've ever had to listen to. She teaches college students the same way kindergarten teachers teach 5 year olds. She makes her online classes unnecessarily difficult to navigate and only opens assignments for a day at a time, despite being asynchronous.
Main part of your grade are exams. She gives you 20 mins to do a 20 question exam and won't give more time because she will say you need to study more or fix your study strategies. Also the TA's don't know how to help people and she won't help you because she thinks the TA's actually help and that you are being lazy. I barely pass the class.
If you skip class, you'll be really, really lost. The lectures are extremely material heavy and you go through an entire chapter within one to two weeks. As long as you sit toward the front and pay really good attention, the tests won't be too hard. She's a really nice person, but the group projects were unnecessary and complicated.
She is the best teacher I have ever had. She cares so much about her students and does everything to make them successful. That being said, this is a very difficult course. The effort you put in will determine your grade, I attended weekly LAZ's, did XTRA credit, and showed up to every class. Passed with a good grade and a lot of knowledge!
Kirman is a great teacher, shes very kind and cares about her students... shes very understanding when it comes to personal issues. However her class is based off exams which can be difficult if you dont study. LAZ meetings are may be helpful however I didnt find then much help, however I tired them out a few types.
Terrible UNM instructor, would never take a class by her again. Rude to students. Took same class with a different professor and made a world of difference. Dont take buckholz...
Dr. B is a phenomenal professor who cares deeply about her students. You have to be willing to put in the work and want to succeed. She's inclusive as well; very comfortable asking her questions in and out of class. You can earn points outside of tests too here which is nice, just keep up. Fun lectures, she makes sure you grasp concepts in class
Dr. B is a nice person, but her teaching style is horrible. Do not take her! She wasted hours lecturing about study habits. Secondly, she overcomplicates simple concepts by creating ridiculous analogies. She also has group projects to be done outside of class. Her class in one that can make a student who excels and loves biology hate it & struggle.
Everyone told me this class would be super difficult, but the instructor made the material fun & applicable to our majors. She is very caring and considerate of personal circumstances. She offers plenty of extra credit throughout the semester but none at the end, so it is important to keep up with all due dates.
I took this class with the intention of being a science major and if I had her for all my science classes I wouldve stuck with it. Tons of extra credit but go to lecture and study and youll pass with an A also do the review questions for the exams theyre almost identical. Great Professor!
Her lectures are really fast paced and you NEED to attend them because the notes have blank spaces that she has the answers to. Get ready do be utterly confused by how she sets things up on Learn and floored by how irrelevant most of her graded homework is. Also, she's the only 1140 Professor at UNM... just go to CNM for this course.
Dr. B was one of the best professors I have had! The lectures were extremely informative and she always asked for questions and clarifications prior to moving on. She provides us with exam review questions that are just like the exam and multiple study aids which helped me pass the class. She is always happy to help and answer questions! Take her!
If I were to say I regret taking Dr. Bs course that would be a huge understatement. The way she taught the course is ridiculous with her long lasting fill in the blank slideshows and overly complicated analogies. The only way to get points in the course were the tests and every other assignment didnt give that many points. Do not take her at all.
She can be difficult as a person, but she's a great teacher. You are expected to study outside of class, but she gives very minimal homework. There are regular exams, but only material she taught in class, and she always provides exam reviews. She has great resources to help you study, and her learning assistants host regular zoom meetings
The class was harder than usual but Dr B became one of my favorite professors theres plenty of help is available which made the class way easier. You will need to put effort for an A though
Kimran was the most self centered, full-of-herself professor I have ever taken. She does have good lectures, but 50% of the class is her praising herself for how much effort she puts into her slides. One time I finished my work before class was done so I went on my phone, and she proceeded to call me out in front of the entire class for "slacking".
The other reviews are right about her personality, she can be very full of herself. But she really does deserve a lot of praise. She is one of the only professors that will give you all the tools to do well in her class. You have to put the effort in, but she teaches you how to study and learn, and she wants you to succeed!
She does tend to have extremely long lectures, but they were super informative and she reinforces the topic multiple times throughout her lectures. She makes the information easy to understand and doesn't mind answering questions before moving on. She gives tons of good resources for the exams and they're all multiple choice.
If you do not attend class you fail. Simple as that. She uses analogies and if you miss those you miss answers to questions on the tests resulting in a failing grade resulting in barely passing the class. She constantly rants about how she cares about her students but never shows it in her actual lectures. Be ready to be confused and lost.
Professor B has very little compassion towards anything. She is very test-heavy. I felt this teacher had her heart in it for the wrong reasons. I tried meeting with her and all she cared about was my "study habits", not how to help me understand the material more. I ended with a C and that was just by luck. Take this class at CNM.
She is a good person, but a horrible teacher. All she cares about is how you study instead of trying to explain the material to you in a way you can understand. The only reason I'm not flat-out failing this class is because of the Learning Assistances' help sessions that thoroughly explain the material. If possible DO NOT take this class with her.
I took Biology 1140 online- your grade is mainly based on exams. Her exams can be stressful as there are less than 2 minutes per question. She explains topics very well but the exam questions ask you a lot about specific examples and analogies she uses, and don't quiz on how well you understand the topic. She is very caring and offers extra credit.
Great teacher. She truly cares about her students and makes her class easy to succeed in!
She was not considerate of what students go thru in their personal lives. She preaches mental health and kindness but does not practice it in her classroom. She is tightly wound (especially on test days) and won't hesitate to take it out on her students. Most curriculum is about study habits rather than biology. Take this online if u have to takeit
I like Ms. Buckholz, but sometimes the complicated metaphors she uses to describe topics can make ideas confusing. She can also be quite egotistical. Besides that, she cares deeply for her students and does a good job explaining topics. She also gives students tons of resources to do well in her class (+ good extra credit).
Such an amazing teacher, wants only for your success. The content of the class can be seen as difficult to others, but Mrs. Buckholz makes it as easy as she can for everyone
She's a great teacher but it's biology so it'll be hard. Lots of studying to do, exams matter a lot but are only multiple choice. Lectures are extremely important, notes!
Super nice and the extra credit saved my butt; so many chances for extra credit. Assignments weigh more than exams so as long as you do the assignments you'll pass. Heavy on bettering her students which is cool. Her lectures are honestly kind of boring because its off slides but they are helpful for tests and when she does a visual aid it helps.
There's lots of opportunity for extra credit, and so long as you go to lecture, you'll do fine. My biggest issue with the class was that there weren't any reminders for the smaller things, which means that if you don't plan well, you'll miss them, and they do pretty heavily effect your grade. All lectures were applicable to real world experience.
Amazing professor! Offers a ton of extra credit and GREAT tutoring opportunities. Truly amazing absolutely loved her class.
She is an amazing teacher and will help you understand something. She wants all of her student to be on the same page.
horrible horrible teaching style focused solely on analogies and dora type calls and responses. lecture slides are completely worthless without her instruction because every single topic is fill in the blank. wastes time with a seating chart in a room of 200 people, spends more time talking about study tips than the actual material.
Dr. Buckholz's teaching relies on fill-in-the-blank slides and study tips over clear instruction. Tests dominate grading, leaving little room for recovery. Unnecessary rules, like a seating chart, add frustration. While well intentioned, her approach makes independent study difficult consider other options.
The online course is very nicely laid out on canvas and easy to navigate. Do be warned that the exams make up most of your grade and for some reason a portion of the questions test you on analogies that she makes up instead of the core of the material. Overall just pay attention, study a little and you should do fine in this course.
This class was amazing! She was so good at explaining all of the information using analogies, pictures and activities. She is always giving out resources in case you are struggling in class. She is truly a caring professor. The tests can be hard so you do need to study. It is also a homework heavy class but absolutely manageable!
Dr. B was one of the most caring professors I've encountered in my UNM experience so far. I had health issues and had to miss a few lectures and even an exam. Since I let her know beforehand, she worked with me to catch me up and answer any questions I had. She is very approachable and loves teaching and seeing her students succeed.
This class was truly amazing! Her lectures were always clear and easy to understand. She uses analogies, pictures and lots of activities. Her tests can be hard so you will need to study. There is also a lot of homework but definitely manageable! She is truly an amazing professor. I absolutely recommend this class.
Great teacher she teaches so good. If you struggle with this class its because your not paying attention and studying outside of class. I don't really have to study much either because she teaches well. She's a very caring teacher and gives her students resources no question is a dumb question to her. Overall a great teacher.
she is a great professor her lectures are very well thought out and the class is overall pretty easy as long as you listen, she has many resources like tutors that will help and extra credit, the tutors do help a lot of you don't understand the lecture overall a great teacher.
She is an extremely kind and genuine professor. Her teaching philosophy is very inspiring and you will learn a lot of good study habits as well as biology content. She provides a lot of help sessions outside of class and many extra credit opportunities.
Best biology class i've ever taken. She's the best teacher and extremely knowledgeable and supportive.
Overall good professor, attendance, reading the textbook, and attending the LAZ's is very important. The only thing I didn't like is how much she babies the class and talks more about study methods than the actual material, but if you can get past this, she's a good professor.
She's a really awesome lecturer, but may focus too heavily on questions about her analogies for exams rather than questions about the biological processes the class is focused on. She's really nice and accommodating but she does have expectations and requirements about class structure and procedures.
Great professor! Biology is a hard subject on its own, so that's the only reason I gave the difficulty I did, but this class isn't bad at all if you just show up to lecture and do the few content based that are given outside of class time! Dr.B is very passionate about teaching which makes learning so much more fun because you can tell she cares
