he makes it seem like he's fun an approachable, when in reality he's a bit of an ass and is not helpful at all. Makes you feel stupid when you ask questions.
Course work load was way too high for an intro course with no prereqs. It's hard to predict his behaviour... sometimes he'll be very supportive, other times makes you feel stupid. Spends way too much time yelling. Way too high expectations from his class. Knows his stuff but his teaching quality could definitely improve.
He can be really mean when he wants to be and can be outright rude to students. I always dreaded going to his class because he always made me feel uncomfortable. He is very passionate about marketing but he kind of changed my mind about wanting to pursue it. I would never recommend anyone to take a course with him. :(
Great prof, keeps you interested.
Knows his stuff but very demanding
Good teacher,If you did the work you got the mark you deserved.
Had this guy for the Selling course. He was great. Used a lot of interesting examples.
This guy knows his stuff with sales. Great teacher and examples.
Wish there were more instructors like himm, he really cares.
Had him for intro in fall 2009. He was very demanding and pushed everyone to excel. There were students in my class that just did not do the work and Prof. Shannahan held them accountable. I have alot of respect for his way of teaching and dealing with deadbeats.
as in intro course he was really demanding, but it was for the best. when it came time for exams, all the stuff was beaten in my head i didn't even open a book. definitely speaks whats on his mind and if he knows youre not doing work, he'll put you in your place. definitely take a class with him again
Kirby's one of the best profs I've had in the business faculty. He has high expectations from all students and there was a lot of work to do in the course. Worth it? Yes.
Kirby likes to speak to students from his soap box. He spends alot of time lecturing on what he doesn't want from students, he must be jaded from lazy students. He is inconsistent and unprofessional, and often uses offensive words. If Kirby was the last prof teaching the only course before I got my degree I would not graduate.
I had heard that he is the worst prof at MUN. Based on this semester he isn't the worst (there's far worse in the faculty trust me). Do the work and you'll be fine. Make an effort in class and in the assignments and he'll make an effort with you. Does tend to use his soapbox a lot though...
Good course and good prof. He never treated us like kids even though some people wanted that and that is why they are burned off with him. Whats Ironic is that my response and others from the course is kind of useless especially based on the way this info is collected.
Dr. Shannahan stimulated my interest in marketing. If you stay on top of things and contribute in class you should get an A. He speaks his mind but it is a teaching style that helps you to remember important points for the future
Pretty good prof, can be a bit harsh during presentations but I think someone from the faculty spoke to him so he eased up a bit. Loves to talk about how much money he has and the businesses he owns, play along with it and you should be fine!
starts off absolutely terrifying. really didn't enjoy going to his class, but he tends to grow on you & really cares about how you do in the course. he's very clear about what he wants & what he doesn't. he's a bit rude sometimes but he's also very entertaining & funny sometimes. beware when you present, he will call you out in front of the class
He tries to frighten his students, and talk down to a lot of them. Go to every class, and never take out electronics. Pay attention, and don't argue with him and you're good. Easy to get an A in his class if you follow his many "rules." His rudeness/anger became entertaining. Worth taking his class over other profs listed for this course.
Good and interesting prof. However he grades VERY hard and is not always specific in letting you know what he wants from presentations and assignments. If you rather an 80 plus in this course, take it with his wife or Donna Stapleton
Kirby is nice, he does have rules that you have to follow but you can tell he does care about his students and how well they do. I was worried at the beginning of the course because he did intimidate me but once you get use to it then its fine. There are 3 big group assignments in his class and presentations but they are not hard.
Absolutely crazy.
Take everything said with a grain of salt. His style is very forward, but he is a great professor. He's a fair marker, and gives good constructive criticism. It's best if you participate in class discussion, as he will probably call on you at some point. He is very clear about what is going to be tested, and also what is needed for assignments
Kirby Shannahan is great prof! He cares abut his students, and is always there to help when you need it. He may be intimidating at first, but don't worry about that, its only purpose is to make sure you go to class consistently. He really just wants to hammer home a few key concepts of the course, he'll make sure you know before you leave!
Great prof !
Amazing prof, course and very clear expectation.
2 group assignments, 2 midterms, no final. textbook a must, read it and you'll do totally fine on midterms. biggest tip: listen to everything he says. It pays off. Do what he wants on assignments the best u can and you'll do fine. Show that you've tried and followed his instruction and its an easy A. Tests are not hard, follows notes and book. Love
Can be intimidating, but very helpful if you go to class and follow his advice.
Kirby comes off as very intimidating and a little crazy, however he just really wants you to be as passionate as he is about marketing and business in general. Take everything he says with a grain of salt, however he knows his stuff and seems to have the experience to back it up. Tests are fair and he has the best lectures I've ever attended.
Amazing prof
By far one of the best professors at MUN. Students who are willing to work hard will do well with him.
One of the best profs I have had in my undergrad or graduate degrees. Expects the best from his students and will go the extra mile to help you reach your best. Is a difficult marker but justifies every decision and does so in a way to best prepare you for the real-world equivalent. Holds people to a higher standard and is extremely knowledgable!
Kirby was a great prof to have. He acts pretty tough, but he's actually a really great guy. Listen to what he says are going to be on the exam, he basically tells you what to expect. Don't over study for it because you will just mess yourself up. He had three tests and one huge group project. Go to the classes!! He makes lectures interesting.
Difficult to impress yet caring
I had Kirby for 1210 and 2210 and I would recommend him for any marketing course. He tries to seem scary but he is actually a really nice person. He uses the same book for both courses and if you use the book to follow his slides you shouldn't have an issue. There's one group project and although it is a lot of work, he makes it as fun as possible.
Kirby is a great prof who really cares about his students. He expects you to come to class and participate. His lectures are always interesting and he will prepare you for all tests and the final group project. I would 100% recommend taking this course with him over any other prof.
Kirby is without a doubt the best choice for Business 1210. He tries to seem intimidating, but is actually a very caring guy. Lectures are very engaging, and the 1 hour 15 minutes flies by. The no cell phone policy is very strict, but it is for the best! Come to class, participate, and you will pass the course!
Loved his course! Straightforward in his lectures and gives clear points on what to focus on for midterms. No final in the course but a group project is part of the final grade. He is a great help when doing the project as long as you are putting in the work and not just throwing it together.
He tries to act intimidating but he's not actually like that as long as you take the course seriously. He made going to class super easy and I would definitely take him again!
Try's to be intimidating. his lectures are interesting and you will definitely learn from him. Very hard to impress
I loved him! Made class interesting and I actuallly enjoyed going to class. Three exams and no final just a group project. Group project takes a lot of work but you can get a good grade if you put the work in.
Kirby really knows his stuff. His lectures were really good, I learned so much from going to class. Tests are pretty straight-forward, although he marks a little difficult. The group project is a lot of work, but if you start it early and keep it simple you should be good!
Kirby is frequently condescending during class, and he has no sense of empathy towards students. He is a very tough marker on projects and tests, but he does not provide much guidance so that you can do better. Often tells students that if they miss anything on the final marketing plan they will get a zero on it. Just try to be more caring, please!
Best prof I've ever had. Never a boring class, constantly keeping everyone engaged through use of real life examples, and tells everything like it is. Learned so many life lessons business and non-business related. He can be intimidating but its a strategy to teach you, try not to get hung up on being offended by it & you'll thank yourself later.
Best prof at MUN
Kirby is an outstanding professor. The key to success in his courses is to go in with an open mind and be willing to take criticism. Kirby appears to be tough on the outside, but cares deeply about his students and wants them to succeed. Many negative reviews are because people think he is "rude", but the reality is that he is honest.
Kirby is a great prof. He makes lectures interesting and uses real life examples to help students understand. He comes off as intimidating but he's actually really nice, but he tells the truth on EVERYTHING. He doesn't sugarcoat anything, which can intimidate people. I learned a lot from him business related and non-business related. Great guy.
Dr. Shannahan makes himself sound harsh and will provide some constructive criticism, but he is an extremely kind man. He sounds somewhat intimidating at first, but throughout the semester you will learn that he is very kind and caring. He wants all of his students to do well. There is no exam at the end of the semester, just a final project.
Decent professor, he is just full of himself and i do not like when profs talk about themselves rather the class material. Also if you don't do what he says he won't make it easy for you.
He make it difficult to score a mark and is extremely strict while marking. Make exam paper on his own and mix it up to avoid students from getting it from other previous students but sometimes he does it too much which is unnecessary. Overall avoid this prof for your own good grades
I took this professor during the remote class phase of Covid-19. While he may be best kind in class, avoid for remote classes. I signed up for remote figuring it would be actual lectures. We met 6 times the semester in which he criticizes us for asking questions, doesn't explain material, and gets mad/ignores us when emailing him. What a joke!
There are 5 assignments on Pearson, 2 midterms, and a final. I found his tests are long compared to the time limit. The course is not hard but there is much information to learn. I literally learn everything by myself because his lectures are useless. Overall, you will probably have a good grade in this course as long as you read the text.
The very few lectures hosted by Kirby during the semester included general rambling about unrelated topics, irrelevant bragging about his personal life, and chastising students for asking questions . While he does not teach, almost all of the test questions were taken directly from the mandatory textbook's practice tests, so it's easy to do well.
The way he tests material makes the course very easy hence the 5 rating. No need to attend lectures.
No surprises, easy A if you had the book and read his slides, very fair midterm and final
Not the best professor but he was the only choice for this course. He makes you work for it that's for sure. Although I've gotten mostly solid A's so far, many students often get 0 on their assignments for dumb details he never made a point of touching on. He's meh, nothing special.
Hes very unclear about his expectations, he berates us for asking questions, he refuses to answer our emails, and he criticizes our work in front of the entire class. Ive never had a prof who lies (or bluffs, to put it nicely) as much as he does. However, the course material is quite easy, so if you do the work the class can be an easy A.
I loved every lecture of his. many people didn't like him since he is so forward person. its easy to get an A if you attended his lecture. its hard to ask him any questions in person but its easy by email and he reply fast. he is kind of rude but wants the best for us. he lies A LOT just to scare us of what is coming but nothing he said will happen
Such a rude prof, calls you out if you're wrong in front of the class, forces you to explain yourself while saying "no, you're wrong, I don't know what you mean, it's common sense, etc." and never does correct you first thing or last. Loves to give out bad report grades without any feedback. Only good thing is that exams are straight from the text.
I enjoyed Professor Shannahan's class lectures. He doesn't make the lectures boring and chooses interesting real-world topics to relate to. Extremely easy/straightforward midterms and final. However, he is an extremely tough grader with his assignments. He comes off rude to many people but I didn't mind him. If you like marketing, you'll like this.
Often brags of his personal life and speaks down on you. Would definitely avoid.
Kirby is passionate about what he teaches and makes class very engaging by giving good examples. He can seem rude but he's a nice guy. If you do take his classes, know that he values attendance and punctuality. I've found that people either love him or hate him. Best piece of advice is get a group which is willing to do the work and you'll be fine.
I could go one of two ways with Kirby, I imagine many feel the same. I like to give the benefit of the doubt. He comes off as rude sometimes, but I really believe he means well by it. Personally, I admire the fact that he shows his students tough love, the only thing is, if you never showed to his class he would sort of have it out for you
Kirby is a very straight forward professor, he believes in having to come to class to succeed. His assignments are a lot of work but also gives online assignments which help to boost your grade. Best advice: pick a good group, he emphasizes this. I suggest that you read the textbook chapters for the midterms and finals (both fair assessments).
Kirby is a straight to the point professor & he keeps his lectures very engaging. Attending classes is MANDATORY because he tells you exactly what he wants in class. As long as you attend classes, everything is pretty straightforward but, very time consuming. His exams are MC & extremely straightforward.
Kirby knows what he's talking about for sure. His class was intense, and a lot of work. But he will make sure that you do know how to write a marketing plan. The only issue with him is that he'll ensure that great students do great but bad students fall through. Get ready to put in hours of work, but in the end it will be a fun course.
He is very blunt but his lectures are very engaging. Attending class is absolutely mandatory as he tells you what he wants in class, having a good group is crucial as the group projects are very time consuming and need to be passed to pass the course. Not hard to get a A in this course as long as you attend class.
Oh my Oh my What a prof make sure to have a GOOD GROUP FOR YOUR PROJECT. If not failure for his course he does not care be respectful of other peoples presentations. He teaches very well on marketing and the powerpoint is very useful for test. If you are your interested in majoring in marketing and looking for intern & work term he will connect
He is a really good lecturer and his content is very carefully chosen. However, if you don't pass the group project (that he doesn't cover content or layout for in class) you fail. So if you suck a group projects skip this Since he's very engaging he is the type to criticize with a tone of comedy so a lot of it sounds like mocking (with no intent)
Dr Shannahan is a great lecturer. His lectures are mandatory however they are incredibly engaging. If you are doing the course just to get a good grade he is not your guy. The course is mostly based on a marketing plan project that is very VERY time consuming and takes a whole lot of effort. If you are looking to actually learn, take this course
I have taken the most out of his course compared to any other university course I have taken & I am now in my fourth year. Attending class & getting a good group for the projects is mandatory to doing well in his class. His lectures are very engaging, he can be blunt but sets you up for the real world!
I understand Dr. Shannahan's reputation now. He's so unnecessarily self-important, and spent most lectures trying to brag rather than teaching.
You will learn a lot from him. If you want to learn then he is the professor for you!
To sum it up, Kirby is a great guy but a stern teacher. The group project is vital to pass the course, and you MUST CHOOSE A GOOD GROUP. He would tell white lies constantly throughout the semester to get us to actually work, but his lectures were invaluable and the best learning experience i've had in the faculty. attendance is also crucial.
Dr. Shannahan delivers great lectures and is very knowledgeable. The course is graded on two midterms, a group project, and a final exam. The group project is vital to pass the course so, it is essential to find yourself a good group. If this course is not a requirement for your degree, I recommend avoiding it.
Worst Prof ever, just going to leave it like that . Take at your own risk and avoid if possible.
Kirby is a very egotistical man, always bragging about what he owns and who he knows. Full of lies. He has a interesting teaching style which makes the course intense. Not the best and not the worst.
The worst course I have taken at mun so far. Shannahan was stuck up, bragged, and lied to the class to try to scare us. He provides no help regarding course work and will not answer questions in email. Unclear outline for group project. Demonstrates favouritism in the classroom; reflected by grades of certain students he knew outside class. AVOID!
There are going to be many people on here trashing Dr. Shannahan. And the fact is that if you are in school just to get your degree, Dr. Shannahan will not hand out your A for your half effort, which this is the issue for most people on here complaining. Go to class, participate in the workshops, and show an effort, and Kirby will reward you.
Good prof. Exams are very straightforward and fair. If you attend and participate in class you will do well.
Love this guy. Had him for 2 of the marketing courses in my second year, I am now going into my fourth year and I feel like I learned the most from the courses I took with him
Prof Shannahan is arrogant in nature, he constantly lies about his businesses/accomplishments and connections. He will try to scare and intimidate you. Do everything exactly as he says because he CANNOT be wrong. Some people will become his favorites at the beginning of the semester, try to be part of their group as this class is preference-heavy.
For the record. I am not a student of Shannahan. I met Mr Shannahan outside of the classroom setting. Within 5 minutes of talking to him, he tells me he's a cardiac surgeon with health science. I was very interested as I have a 6 year old who's had 3 heart surgeries. I was repulsed to learn he's in no sense of the word a "Cardiac Surgeon".
I had to drop the course because of the heavy workload in this class, and because of how uncomfortable Kirby made me. While doing progress presentations of the marketing plans, he was so brutally honest and rude that he made some people cry. He was also just a weird guy overall. I hope to be able to avoid him as a prof in the future
While Dr. Shannahan is stern and can be quite rude at times, he is a great teacher who gets the most out of his students. His lectures are very informative and his exams are quite easy and straightforward and you will do well if you study the slides. The group project can be difficult but if you put in the work Kirby will reward you.
He is the worst professor MUN could possibly have. He spends all his time talking about his so-called businesses, which seem fake! If you fail the group project, he'll fail you in the entire course, no matter how well you did on the midterm or final. He's an absolute nightmare! Avoid him at any cost
He is scary and gave me a lot of anxiety in this class. He contradicts himself so often, that it can be very difficult to know what he wants for the final project (which if you don't pass you fail the course). This is a very hard project and you NEED a good group for it, so I would drop the course if I did not have a good group. Good lectures tho.
When I first began the course, I found it brutal. Kirby can be very intimidating, lies quite often, and you will find youself nervous coming to class. That being said, i'm not i've ever learned as much as I have through this course. He is intimidating to make you work, and when he means work, it's WORK. In the end, he will reward you, and cares!
Kirby is a very interesting Prof. He tells you how it is. He can be intimidating during the lectures, but if you attended the lectures and did the work, then a good grade is more than doable. If you don't work hard, then get ready to be told about it. 30% of the grade is a marketing plan, that if done well, can be around 100 pages.
The amount of work he gives student is brutal. All he talks about the project and nothing else. He gives you 100 reason why you will fail this course and then tell to be confident. Such a joker. Guy needs to chill
It's like call of duty world at war veteran mode. "you will not survive"
Kirby is very knowledgeable in sales and psychology. He puts lots of effort in his evaluation (roleplays etc.), so you actually learn something. I think people are just intimidated by his straightforwardness. You'll need to put the work in but don't worry, he isn't here to make your life difficult. Don't take if hoping for easy marks. Respectful.
Overall I think Dr. Shannahan was a great prof! He taught me a lot this semester from completing the big group marketing plan project and his lectures were also very interesting. You definitely need to put the work into this course but in the end you really benefit and learn a lot.
Do not take professional selling with this professor. It quite literally left me traumatized. I was so happy that I was able to take the course at first. I tried hard and I cared about it. The final is Kirby and his business buddies (mostly toxic men trying to prove a point) sat around a table making you feel horrible. I left crying. Just horrible
I have no idea how to rate Dr. Shannahan. I had difficulty with his personality as he is extremely arrogant and could not complete a lecture without lying about his "businesses", or yelling at students. Dr. Shannahan is harsh, blunt, and inappropriately selects his TAs. However, I learned a lot from him and he is passionate about marketing.
Failed my whole group and gave us all 49's because we didn't pass the group project by 2 marks. Talks you down a lot, but I must say his lectures were really good and interesting, just didn't like how he was and talked us down a lot. We put in so much work into it and he still didn't care .Left a lot of the lectures feeling so stressed.
I wouldn't recommend this professor unless you're prepared to deal with noticeable favoritism. The class experience can feel biased and unfair.
Dr. Shannahan is a smart guy, definitely the best prof for this course hands down. Group project was the serious contribution for this course, super hands on, you wont get this experience in any other course. He is very straight forward with no time for games, if you are ready to work, he is able to provide. You put in the work, he will reward you.
Worst professor in all of MUN. Highly erratic with a god-complex and a history of belittling students and creating toxic environments. He lied about being a Cardiac Surgeon. The 4.0/5.0's are him PAYING HIS TA'S TO WRITE THEM. Read them and you'll see common themes. Even they talk about his rudeness. As a student, I am beyond shocked and disgusted.
I never wore my seatbelt while driving to school because I wanted to die before making it to his class
Kirby is a very passionate prof, but will try to intimidate you. The whole course and lectures are based on a 30% marketing plan and presentation. Go to the workshop classes as the TA's will tell you how to do the plan and how he likes it. Kirby is very good at teaching marketing, and his midterms and finals are based on lectures and slideshows.
What can be said about Dr. Shannahan that hasn't been said already, he is a pathological liar and is also a really tough grader, however, if you go to the class and make a real attempt you have nothing to worry about, Kirby is more bark than bite, the group project is super important just make sure you're surrounded by the best possible group
Great prof. In this course, Dr. Shannahan provides students the opportunity to develop a communications plan for a live organization, something few profs offer. However, this course can be demanding at times and may not be everyone's preference. If you seek real-world experience from a course and aren't afraid of some work, I'd highly recommend.
