I wouldnt recommend him. Hes a funny guy but I failed all of my papers even though they were decent! He is a very tough grader. I would never take this Professor again.
The class was a great experience he really cares and trys to do so much to get you to pass the class. I would 100% take his course again.
Great Professor he will work with you as long as you communicate with him I would definitely recommend taking him and I'm planning to take him for English 1302 when he starts teaching it
Not your orthodox teacher, he is quite accessible in his teaching method and gives examples of real world applications. He has a no-nonsense approach to teaching and makes emphasis on ensuring that the content is comprehensive and able to be understood. If you take him and his course seriously then he will put forth reciprocal effort for you.
Mr. Cochran was awesome and inspired me to do better. Hes super easy to get along with and you can tell he really enjoys what he does and thats what matters most to me.
Grades essays super hard never passed a single essay in his class. I would get good feedback from the writing center and different professors and I still failed all my essays. Hes a great guy and super funny, but I wouldnt take his class. He doesnt respond to emails either.
He's super laid back but makes sure that you are participating and understanding the lecture. He does really well with altering his lectures to help each class understand the best way possible ex: using visuals, breaking things down, uses real life scenarios as examples. I would by far take his class again!
He is such a hard grader its impossible to pass his essays. Barely respond to his email and is not that professional. Dont take him. There are better teachers out there.
Passionate about teaching, Cares for his students, Not many test at all to take.
He was a good teacher you should go to class all the time just to hear the lecture and then you will have a little homework just to apply what you learned in class and I took the 6 week class in the summer so it went by fast but you will have to write big papers so he prepared for that
It was a good class and happy I learned how to properly write essays.
One of the best teachers I've had. Really good.
Mr. Cochran is an inspiring and well rounded professor. He not only focuses on in depth rhetoric topics but truly cares about the success of his students. His "culture building" activities were one of my favorite things we did all semester and each assignment opened my mind to new and interesting ideas that were presented. Favorite class yet!
Professor Kirk Cochran does his best to adapt to the students. He teaches in a way for all the students to understand. He encourages new ideas. Does group activities. If youre an introvert like me, then you wont like speaking to others, but it helped me a lot.
Mr. Cochran was the best English teacher I have ever had. He is very understanding and loves to learn about his students and be able to teach in a way that helps everyone. If you do not take him you are missing out.
Mr. Cochran is a nice dude and effective teacher, but you'll need to put some effort. Work may not be too difficult but it will be consistent, so try not to slack off. Collaboration is a cornerstone of the class, so try not to skip often. If you do your best, you'll be fine. Cochran encourages learning and how to do it effectively. He's a good pick
Anyone that gives this man a bad review simply does not like him, or struggles in this class. Although he makes you work for a good grade on papers, he does so in order for us to understand the material and why it is taught. Awesome!
One of the best teachers I've had so far at Lone Star. He is very charismatic and energetic, and very in tune with the culture. His lessons were always fun and engaging. There were many opportunities for extra credit. He always encouraged us to step out our comfort zones and to keep an open mind. I definitely grew as a writer and as a person.
Amazing, funny and inspirational. He is the best prof I've ever taken!! yes, he grades hard but he is really caring and will give good feedback
Fantastic teacher in class, does a great job explaining the material and often does group work and discussions. Clearly outlines his grading criteria, but has no leniency about missed or late work. I would recommend talking to him about the material, but don't take the class.
He truly is a great teacher and if you have difficulties showing up because of serious issues he understanding. Hes laid back kind of teacher but as long as you do the work and put effort into it. You wont have any problems.
He's a great professor
Great professor but his essays are graded very tough. If you skip class, you will miss a lot of stuff. He has no leniency for late work AT ALL. I would choose someone else but if there is nobody else, his class will do. Not an easy A if that's what you are looking for.
A wonderfully enjoyable teacher who does a fantastic job at explaining the material. Grades essays thoroughly and gives helpful feedback on how you could improve on subsequent essays. He makes time for students outside of class. Homework policy is fair with it being no late turn-ins unless you have an extenuating circumstance. Light on assignments.
Really great professor, cares about his students and wants to make sure they feel comfortable in his class.
I just did not like the way he taught.
I really like the way he teaches. Classes are always engaging. Hes a really good guy dont get me wrong. The only thing I have a problem with is all the Writers notebooks. Essays also can be complicated as he grades very tough. The Class is awesome but the assignments are so complicated. He isn't really lecture heavy either as he makes the class fun
The homework is tedious and various but he is fun and is super inspirational with all of the stories he tells. Hes interesting to listen to and makes the lectures fun to where you dont want to skip class.
Rally great class! The more you stay involved in class and the lectures the easier this class is. There is a little excessive amount of home work nut he is and easier grader and very understanding. If you just talk to him and keep him aware also stay involved this will be ans easy A.
I will say Professor Cochran is very explanatory and goes into heavy detail when it comes to the topic of rhetoric but, he goes off topic a lot and gets sidetracked. He wasn't too responsive to emails, but had clear instructions when it came to grading rubrics. Still a cool professor though!
Great teacher
Cool and great professor.
Grade is reflection of effort. As long as you DO THE WORK & make an effort you will more than likely pass. The work is not hard, but it does require critical thinking. Meeting word count minimums & reading his announcements are a MUST. After 6 years I took this class for the 3rd time and passed with a %100. Couldnt have asked for a better Prof!
He wasn't clear on some of the homework, when I would email him for help he would just say read the textbook. Sometimes he would give me a little extra details but most of the time it was just to read the book. He also will refuse to grade an assignment if it isn't good enough.
My experience with Professor Cochran was nothing less than amazing, he was able to make online learning fun in these trying times.I thought that he was very good at giving feedback, and cared a lot about his students being able to comprehend the subjects that we were learning.I would highly recommend him to all of my peers and I believe take his cl
He was literally the worst professor Ive had. He really needs to get it together. His 1301 class isnt even a comp class where you learn how to write essays, its 100% about rhetoric. The textbook is online and he expects you to learn everything off of it. If you email him about having trouble, he literally does not care and will not help you.
I would not take this professor again. I have taken advanced English at another school with less trouble. Too harsh with the way he grades. Explains things to where they feel overwhelming/exaggerated but you are still left confused. Left this class more confused than when I began. Nice enough guy, but not the most effective teacher.
Professor Cochran was an amazing professor to have. He was tough however he did not set you up to fail. he graded toughly but was fair.
I would absolutley recommend Professor Cochran to other students. He is really involved with all students and genuinely cares about your understanding of the material. He gives amazing feedback as well. But you have to want to work for the grade you want, no free passes.
Waits days to respond to emails. Let's you know on the group message board that "I'm late for my nap." Wouldn't give an extension when a family member died suddenly.
Easy class, Take it!
The way he's sitting on this website and replying to students is childish. All of his responses are so condescending and snobby it's hard to even take him seriously. People could probably overlook the negative reviews and still take his class, but his responses make me think he likes to argue with students in class regularly.
Never have I ever had to drop a class because I was failing or seen a Professor argue in the comments about ratings lol. He over explains to the point you don't understand. He grades too harshly, if its not good enough for him, he refuses to grade and gives you a zero. This was my fault because I enrolled last minute and all the good ones were gone
I would not recommend taking this professor's class. I was not a big fan of how tough he graded all the assignments and in my opinion, a professor who is a tough grader makes the class more stressful than it needs to be. This next part may be wrong but I got the feeling that he expected us to be already good at analyzing which I personally am not.
He did not give any extra credit. He grades so harshly and expects you to get the assignments exactly correct or you fail. I am not good at writing and he did not really explain how to improve my writing in an easy way. His syllabus was not really clear. He said there was nothing I could do to improve my grade. I was always stressed in this class.
Great professor, didn't really get to speak with him because my class was online, but seems like a good person. Only problem the class had with him was that most of us didn't understand an assignment and we all got zeros, but he then sent an email telling us not to worry about it that much so it was fine hehe.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Most stressful semester of my life. Feedback is not helpful. Extremely tough grader. Not worth the stress. Yea hardest class ever... pretty annoyed... Also extra credit is only given to those students who make certain scores on assignments aka, the students who don't need extra credit... give it to those who do...
Professor Cochran is an outstanding person. Reasonable, caring, and attentive. However, this class was by far the most challenging class I took. If you are looking for a challenge, this class is for you. If you are looking for an easy A to get credit, move along, this class is not for you. It took a lot of time and stress, but I finished. Good luck
Please do not take this prof. He is a nice guy but he gets side tracked all of class making it frustrating to take time out of your day to go to class. Also, he thinks he has some kind of superior grading system but it actually sucks. The class average was in the 70's or 60's and he thought it was fine. The class load is ridiculous. Not worth it.
Mr. Cochran is a great professor, not because its an easy class, but because he will challenge your writing and force you to improve. I feel my writing improved significantly throughout the semester. If you put in some effort and not get behind you will be just fine.
He was a great professor, but the course was extremely difficult where students would have to do lots of homework. The grade might deceive some people, but I put in countless amount of hours to receive a good grade. I loved his offering to help students with explaining articles and improve papers. do not take the course, unless you like challenge.
Professor C is a great teacher and a cool person. The material was definitely challenging, but also facinating and made me see language in a new way. I probably would have gotten a little more with in person or live teaching, but I still got a lot out of it doing the online course. All in all a great experience!
I loved him he's a great guy and I learned a lot in his class. There is also the opportunity to get bonus points which I very much appreciate.
He was just a hard grader. At first the class was okay but over time he didn’t grade the work himself. He used other tools to grade papers which was horrible. I would not take him again. It became difficult overtime and time consuming. I enjoyed some of the work that had put out. I also like the fact that he made videos to help.
I was ecstatic to learn ENGL1301 with Professor Cochran. As a freshman in college, I was hoping for Cochran to help me improve as a writer and thinker. However, Cochran had unrealistic expectations for me as a student and refused to grade my work, giving me zeroes for assignments. I lost all motivation for school because of him.
Great class! He will push you to your limit. If your looking for quality education, take this class. If your looking to slack off, step aside . Professor Kirk is an extremely knowledgeable writer. He also gives great communication throughout the course.
Professor Cochran is an extremely harsh grader who doesn't communicate expectations clearly and gives very confusing and often contradicting feedback on assignments. There are teachers who want to be known as the "tough" teachers. I think that's his goal? Very nice man, very relatable, but HARSH grader. If your GPA matters to you, avoid!
Professor Cochran is very helpful. If you do your work, you'll pass. He explains everything to you in notes, instructions, and even some short videos. He answers emails and he also lets you know when he will and will not be available.
Best English professor and class I took and do not let negative feedback fool you! He is very caring and makes sure that you would understand the materials. I recommend coming to his workshop/office hours which is 3 times/week if you need help with your homework/essay/understanding materials. Lots of extra credits at the end of class.
If you read the required material and make sure you save all documents to go back to for reference you'll do fine in this class. He is a very strict professor when it comes to grading but he also explains thoroughly on things you need to revise and material to go back to in order to refresh your memory. Overall, the class was great.
very Harsh grader. A paper i turned in to him he graded a 17 but when i turned it into another professor she gave it an 82. Do not take his class it will hurt your GPA and you wasted almost $300 bc you will end up dropping.
Professor Cochran is great! But for many his strict grading is a turn off to take his course, but I think the people who felt he graded unfairly did not utilize the resources he gave them enough. One massive tip I must tell future students is to EMAIL HIM! Every time I felt stuck or needed help, I knew I could email him and get amazing feedback.
Professor Cochran has been good to me both in English I and II. He was very available and he truly took a genuine interest in the questions that I had and gave me substantive feedback and guidance when I reached out. He will push you, and his course allows you to make mistakes without your grade getting destroyed. Don't neglect the "bonus" work!
He's an alright professor, but seems to be very redundant. You may have to reach out to him often for specific feedback about grades. He is understanding, and does seem to try his best, but the course can be a bit much with the way he teaches it. The way his D2L is set up is strange, but once figured out, it's easy. The class was hybrid
Cochran loops his ideas, is contradicting, and regularly points out attitudes in his students. During lectures, I'm unable to follow because he says some things are mandatory, but other things aren't. I'm not passing, not is it possible for me to.
I took the developmental course with Professor Cochran during the summer as a hybrid class and he made it a breeze. The syllabus and grading rubrics are clear. The work you do is the grade that you get. Professor Cochran even assisted me with my ENGL1301 work. Very knowledgeable!
I took him during the 6-week summer class. Not much negative other than He is very general with his grading and lets the program do the significant chunk. You're left with general feedback where you need to reach out to get anything in detail with little help on the how-to and emphasis on scholarly language.
Giving multiple forms of extra credit, having great availability for extra help, and giving detailed feedback on all assignments, Professor Cochran is a very clear, precise teacher, who really puts in effort to give every student the fair opportunity to get an A.
Cochran graded harshly and has a refusal to grade policy if the work is under a certain word count. I also showed up to class once and he never showed. Maybe he made an announcement that I wasn't aware of, but I searched up and down D2L and never found anything about class being cancelled. It was also finals that week.
Professor Cochran was overall a great teacher. He always responded to my questions quickly after I emailed. He gave clear grading criteria and several extra credit opportunities. He was a tough but fair professor and gave me great feedback on every assignment. He's also a nice guy and funny too. At the end of our final exam, he rick-rolled us!
this professor is terrible and has narcolepsy he literally falls asleep every class and then claims it is his "10-minute meditation" he gets annoyed and passive-aggressive when you email him more than once i didnt understand why he had bad and harsh reviews because he seemed really chill until we started to do assignments for the class
Personally I would not have him as a teacher again. He never encouraged us to take notes and he never did lectures that were worth writing down. We would spend the first 10 minutes of class meditating? Those 10 minutes would have been so useful for the one paper that we were working on the whole semester. Also, he would say we were being "vague".
Professor Cochran is one of the best professors or teachers I have every had. He is really exciting, caring, and most importantly wants you to understand the fundamental concepts in the class. He will challenge you on the way you think about certain subjects in a really unique way which becomes very engaging to be in the class. 10/10 Professor!
Seems to really care about students in how they are doing and has feedback that is easily applicable to each writing assignment.
Cochran was always very helpful, kind, and had such a personality! I have to say, coming out of high school, this class was a massive change of scenery. The grading is strict and the assignments require critical thinking, unlike in high school. This class was challenging to get used to, but I 100% think my writing and analysis skills have improved.
I am a dual credit student and Professor Cochran was my first teacher on my college journey. It was not an easy class, and I learned a lot. It was hard for me to wrap my head around some things, but that may be due to my age as I am only 15. He gave pretty clear grading criteria and good feedback too. He always answered my emails promptly as well.
EXTREMELY harsh grader when it comes to grading essays. No exaggeration is included in that. No matter how much help I've asked for and received from other people and revised my work the essay was always graded lower than a 68. Feedback is terrible and always vague.
absolutely horribile
Unreasonably harsh grader pertaining to essays!! Feedback is terrible and always vague. Got plenty of help yet still received rather low grades on essays despite getting as much help as possible. Would never take this class again and do not recommend it!!! Huge blow to my gpa so be careful if you care about yours.
HORRIBLE. Feedback from him never makes sense, doesn't even seem like it's about the current assignment more like a prewritten statement he copys & pastes. Do NOT waste your money and time unless you want your GPA to drop for fun. He calls himself a 'tough grader' more like 'I have a quota to meet so I fail everyone.'
Professor Cochran is very professional and always made sure students had every resource they would need to become successful. I found Professor Cochran's lectures to be very productive as well as helpful. I would take Professor Cochran's class again.
I really like Professor Cochran. So much that I checked to see if he taught 1302. I thought the course would be hard but he made me think differently. His short video reminders and explanations were great. Discussion posts were fun He kept giving me good feedback and positivity. He's a really cool and fair professor. He does not want you to fail!
Took Professor Cochran Eng. 1301 during the 6-week summer version. I loved the short video reminders he gave each week. He gives amazing feedback and responds very quickly.
I have written enough for my classes, I'm not going to do that here.
Take this Professor he was always understanding of late work and gave extra days to turn it in, He does little games with lessons but the essays are kinda confusing. He will push you to think
Unnecessarily harsh grader. Lectures were pointless with everyone on their laptops working on actual assignments. Lectures were not useful at all and graded papers way too harshly and unfairly. Late to every single class.
He was awesome!
Prof Cochran can be a tough grader if you fail to put effort in, but by using his constructive feedback during the essay you can improve your grade. At the end of the course, he added multiple Extra credit assignments that were required, easy, and heavily weighted to where i gained 8 points and ended up with a 100. Its a lot of work, but doable.
Professor Cochran is very kind and nice to all students. He will answer the questions you have and do his best to help your work. I love taking his class because he is very easy and chill to get along. I will highly recommend anyone would like to improve their English to take his class.
He is an excellent instructor. I really like his class and his lectures; I genuinely believe you can learn a lot from him. He is also concerned about his students' grades; if you are going to fail, he will approach you and offer you some advise or ask if you are okay.
Professor Cochran was really nice and considerate throughout the semester. If things came up on d2l or in person that faltered learning or delayed assignments he was really quick to resolve it. He gives many extra credit opportunities and was good at helping students understand the material.
This is not a traditional English 1301, instead of Composition & Rhetoric this class should be renamed to Rhetoric & Rhetoric. I described my experience of this class to fellow friends/students, family members, and alumni which all have provided a common response of this isn't a normal 1301 class. Feedback was poor, confusing and very contradictory
try a different professor, grades too harshly feedback doesn't make sense at all or none at all. if you have taken this professor you'll know what i mean, some of the 5 star ratings you can obviously tell he did lol
horrible, 'tough grader' vague feedback. would not take again.
Class should be titled rhetoric and rhetoric.
Great professor. Lectures made topics easy to understand. He provided loads of feedback and was always open to answering any questions. If writing isn't something you're strong at I wouldn't discourage you from taking this class because I think Professor Cochran is a passionate teacher and also very accommodating.
I took the 14-week hybrid class. His lectures are great and he has a clear grading criteria for all the assignments. There were discussions, a few quizzes, and just one essay for the whole course. There are graded and non-graded activities that will help you with the development of your essay. There is extra credit which will help you. It was great
Professor is responsive and will usually try to help but grades things very harshly and provides some of the worst feedback I have ever seen. Very unforgiving and would steer clear of this class. Shows clear bias for some students and has a hard time understanding things written. Professor made a mistake in the feedback and still kept a grade.
Overall, a nice person but a terrible online professor. He requires an unusual amount of AI and proofreading assignments that can be tedious. As an IB student, this course has given me my first C in my academic career. Do not take him unless you are ok with unreliable office hours, docking off of unecessary points, and unreasonable expectations.
Great teacher. Would recommend this class.
Overall was a good professor, however some assignments were graded with Ai and docked off points that weren't needed to be taken off. In the end making some assignments be scored lower and making the class hard to keep a good grade in.
do not recommend, all the bad reviews are true.
Professor Cochran is a fair, understanding instructor who provides great feedback. While his classes require effort, he offers extra credit opportunities to boost your grade. For study prep, tools like unstuck AI and ChatGPT can be really helpful. Overall, a worthwhile course.
He was cool at first. But then slowly I started to see people dropping out of his class. He gives good lectures and funny. However he is a tough grader. Lacks on good feedback. I took his class fall 24' hopefully he changed.
For an English teacher, he sure uses ChatGPT a lot to write his replies and assignment prompts. He is also very vague in his feedback and unhelpful and his assignments are difficult to understand. I've gotten multiple help from others and have still failed every writing assignment. Steer clear and do not take this class with him.
His homework did not match with what you would learn in class...Would have long writing assignments just for him to fail you. Bad reviews are all true.
Extremely lazy, he relies heavily and strongly on ChatGPT to help him conduct assignments. Mostly peer work. Good luck trying to have him help you with your final because he will give you a generic email response to overlook all 11 weeks full of work, and then when you take your final. Almost 89% won't be on it!
The D2L for this class was overwhelming and severely cluttered so much that links would be difficult to find. The first couple weeks assignments didn't seem relevant to the course. He seemed to care more about searching for students that misused AI. If you sound too robotic you could be accused of using AI even if you didn't.
The professor wasn't the most effective at explaining concepts clearly, and I often felt confused after lectures. The D2L page was very cluttered and hard to navigate, which made it difficult to find important materials and stay organized throughout the course. It would help if things were more structured and better communicated.
This professor was more focused on using AI in his classroom than teaching the class. Whether it was AI witch hunts or forcing students to use AI on coursework. Rarely were lectures focused on the material, and feedback was often dull or conflicting. Not to mention how rude he would be in class. Good luck with asking for feedback without being rude
I was shocked by the strong use of AI in this class. Nearly every assignment he created in "Collaboration with Chat GPT", yet would have incentives for fellow students to report one another for AI use. He has such a strong focus on AI that it delayed grading. Feedback is unclear, and most assignments seem irrelevant. Disappointed in this class.
If you study, show up to class, and get extra help from him, this will be an amazing class. There are enough extra credit opportunities to raise your grade 1 1/2 letter grades. Just study for the weekly quizzes and ask him for help on all of the prewriting assignments and the final essay. He is very strict on AI, but it's a writing class.
The D2L was unorganized and almost impossible to navigate. He failed me in the course until I had a meeting with him after the course was over, during which I showed him that he had incorrectly imputed my grade. I think he did this purposely because I am white. He calls himself an American descendant of slavery (ADOS)...His class didn't matter.
He was the worst professor I've ever had. I have never heard so many students complain about a single professor. He used AI on EVERYTHING, even on classwork and assignments. But would get pissy if you used it. He does accept late work unless you go to him physically, but even then he literally FORGOT for weeks until I had to meet him. Hate hate.
This professor makes this class feel like a nightmare. He ignored the real material, spent lectures ranting about AI, refused to answer questions, and always said, “Check the syllabus.” The essay was unclear, the final didn't match the review, and his rude, dismissive behavior made the classroom feel tense, uncomfortable, and genuinely unsafe.
Very funny professor, I just didn't enjoy how the class was ran. He requires you read all of the things that you are gonna talk about outside of class, and doesn't explain them as throughly as I would hope for. Some of the instructions on the assignments were unclear as well. Lot of Homework every week without class time to work on them.
If you dislike English as a subject, you'll dislike it even more. For someone to be so against the use of ai , he sure uses it a lot. Literally everything in his d2l course was made by ai. Very bad experience.
Unfortunately during the time I took this class I began to hate this professor more and more. None of his lectures are even remotely on topic half of the time. He then expects everyone to read and study out of class. Heavy use of Ai but won't allow Ai use in any of his assignments is wicked by the way do not take.
